  • Farm Minister Suzuki: ‘I Want to Buy Back Reserve Rice Before the Harvest’ — Rice Prices Won’t Come Down Despite the Glut

Agriculture Minister Suzuki, who had previously said he wouldn’t intervene in rice prices, has reversed course and announced he wants to buy back government reserve rice before this year’s rice harvest begins. Even with experts pointing to a rice glut, the move reveals his real intention: he doesn’t want rice prices to fall. On 5ch, the discussion ranged widely — some suspect he’s prioritizing protecting farmers back home in Yamagata, others raised the vested-interest ties with JA (the national agricultural cooperative), and still others compared the price of imported rice.

Farm Minister Suzuki, who was supposed to “not intervene in rice prices,” declares he “wants to buy back reserve rice before the harvest starts”… his real intention despite a rare rice glut: he “absolutely does not want rice prices to fall”

Why is rice cheaper overseas than in Japan?
Isn't it just that Japanese farmers are incompetent?

With the weak yen, labor costs are cheap here too, so Japan should be able to produce it cheaper than other countries, right?
Isn't it strange to demand profits when your production capacity is this low?
If you want more money, shouldn't you just work harder?

Aren't the farmers the ones most at fault here?
Japan should drop the rice tariff to zero and make them compete on price with foreign rice.

Isn't the real problem that vested-interest groups like JA — not the farmers — were the ones hiding rice in warehouses?
They were probably betting on another bad harvest in 2025 too.

By the way, rice is cheap overseas because the paddies are large and easy to mechanize.
In Japan, lots of farmers each own tiny paddies, which makes mechanization hard.
They don't reduce the number of farmers because keeping them around helps the ruling party at election time.

If you weaken the yen further, fertilizer, feed, electricity, and machine fuel costs all go up across the board, you know?
And on top of that, you people keep demanding the minimum wage be raised to 1,500 or 2,000 yen.
Even imports, which start out cheap, get pricier with a weak yen — so domestic goods go up too.

Well, but this is seriously dim-witted.

The 'result' is already in: the public is saying, 'If our income isn't rising but rice prices are, we'll just eat something other than rice.'

They must be out of their minds to think they can keep prices high and still sell all of it.

    >>If they buy the missing 700,000 tons out of the surplus 2.43 million tons sitting in private stockpiles, that brings it down to 1.73 million tons — which is even below the proper reserve level.

So as not to waste tax money:
I'll allow it if they buy back the reserve rice at under 1,000 yen per kilogram.
    Anything above that,
make Suzuki's salary and the Agriculture Ministry bureaucrats
split the bill for the wasted tax money.

Imported rice had its moment when it was cheap, but everyone's gone back to domestic rice now that prices have come back down.
With domestic rice already under 3,000 yen and barely pricier than Calrose, would people even still pick imported?

"Amid rising prices and shortages, in 2025 the major supermarket chain Aeon initially stocked California-grown 'Calrose' rice at 2,680 yen (before tax) for 4 kg."

    4 kg at 2,680 yen = 5 kg at 3,350 yen

So old imported rice is pricier than new domestic rice?

It's the wholesalers who'll suffer if last year's rice gets cheaper.
They're the ones who tried to make a killing at the public's expense, so it's their own fault — just leave them to it.

If the wholesalers are the ones refusing to buy the new crop except at rock-bottom prices, then just give the subsidies straight to the farmers.

Whatever happens, don't hand money to the wholesalers.

Price-gouging on a staple food is the kind of crime that'd land you in prison in other countries.

    Background and Key Points

Japan’s government reserve rice system was created after the 1993 crop failure and street shortages, and normally works one way: the state releases stockpiled rice to calm prices during shortages, as it did during the 2024-25 rice-price crisis, then restocks afterward at market rates. What Suzuki is proposing — buying rice back before the new harvest even lands, while private stockpiles are reportedly around 2.43 million tons above normal — inverts that logic into a price floor. JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) is the body that actually collects, stores, and distributes most domestic rice and has long been treated as inseparable from LDP farm-bloc politics, especially in rural, over-represented districts like Suzuki’s home prefecture of Yamagata, one of Japan’s largest rice producers.

The thread doesn’t converge on one villain. Posts split between pinning the blame on farmers themselves (small, unmechanized paddies keeping costs high, unlike the large operations used overseas), on JA and wholesalers accused of hoarding reserve rice to resell at a markup, and on Suzuki/LDP simply protecting a voting bloc regardless of consumer cost. One post even defends the hoarders as exercising legitimate “economic freedom” in a capitalist system, which cuts against the thread’s dominant outrage.

What’s likely to be missed: land fragmentation — millions of small, non-contiguous paddies inherited across generations — is a structural, decades-old obstacle to consolidation and mechanization, separate from JA’s political leverage, yet both get flattened into a single “farm lobby” grievance. Also unmentioned is that this reversal contradicts Suzuki’s own earlier stated position against intervening in prices at all.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “Farm Minister Suzuki, who was supposed to ‘not intervene in rice prices,’ says he wants to buy back reserve rice before the harvest starts… ‘I absolutely do not want rice prices to fall’ despite the glut.”

    116AnonymousAug 28, 2026 08:48
    Re: #115
They'll unlock that for the PS6 version.

    Background and Key Points

Footage of Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 has been circulating since Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two officially confirmed the title runs at a fixed 30 frames per second on all console platforms, including the PS5 Pro. This matters because GTA V, released in 2013, was also capped at 30fps on PS3/PS4 hardware and only got a 60fps patch years later on PS5/Xbox Series consoles — so longtime fans immediately recognized the pattern repeating. For context, 5ch is Japan’s largest anonymous forum network (the spiritual successor to 2channel), and “Nandemo Jikkyo G” is one of its live-commentary boards where posters react to trending video and news in real time; “livejupiter” (nanJ), referenced in the thread, is a separate 5ch board known for sports and gaming talk with a large PC-gaming-enthusiast presence, which is why one poster dismissed PC players there as vocal but commercially irrelevant to console-driven GTA sales.

The thread’s actual fault line wasn’t graphics versus gameplay — nearly everyone agreed the visuals were a leap forward — it was whether a fixed 30fps is acceptable in 2026 on flagship-tier hardware like the PS5 Pro. Some posters treated it as a dealbreaker significant enough to cancel a purchase; others argued GTA’s identity as a chaotic, systems-heavy open-world game (dense NPC and traffic simulation) makes 30fps an engineering tradeoff rather than laziness, and that lowering graphical fidelity to unlock 60fps isn’t feasible given the sheer object count on screen.

What’s likely to be misunderstood by non-Japanese readers: this isn’t a niche complaint. Frame rate has become a mainstream console-gaming flashpoint in Japan precisely because Sony markets the PS5 Pro on performance, so a first-party-adjacent AAA title shipping locked at 30fps reads as a broken promise to some, not just a technical footnote.

  • Is “Higher Wages” the Key to Fixing Japan’s Low Birth Rate? 5ch Split Over Whether “It’s Mostly About Money”

Job Research Institute, a research body run by Persol Career (the company behind the job-change service “doda”), has published survey results naming “rising wages” as the policy most needed to combat Japan’s declining birth rate. On 5ch, this struck a chord with users pointing to soaring education and child-rearing costs, but plenty pushed back too — “wages were low in the Meiji era too, and yet people had lots of kids,” “it’s not about money, it’s about having too many other options” — leaving opinion split.

Job Research Institute, a research body operated by Persol Career Co., which also runs the job-change service “doda,” conducted a “2026 Survey on Awareness of the Declining Birthrate” targeting 450 working men and women.

The survey sheds light on working people’s attitudes toward the declining birth rate, covering the gap between the ideal and actual number of children, the factors standing in the way, how personally responsible people feel about the issue, and what policies they think are needed to improve it.

Do you not get that the cost of raising kids is completely different now than it was back then?

Also, back then kids were labor, but nowadays a kid brings absolutely nothing to the household.

    Background and Key Points

Persol Career runs doda, one of Japan’s largest job-change platforms, and its research arm periodically surveys the working population on social issues tied to employment. Japan’s total fertility rate has sat below 1.3 for years despite decades of child-allowance and daycare-expansion policies, so a 450-person sample naming “higher wages” as the top fix is notable mainly because it cuts against the government’s current toolkit, which leans on subsidies and facilities rather than income growth itself. The Meiji-era comparison posters raised is a real historical touchstone in Japan — birth rates were high through the early twentieth century — but it’s usually invoked loosely, without noting that child mortality was severe and children functioned as agricultural labor, contexts the thread doesn’t spell out.

The thread’s real fault line isn’t “money matters vs. doesn’t” — nearly everyone agrees costs are a factor — it’s whether money is the root cause or just one visible symptom of something else: the “too many other options” camp argues urban, salaried life offers status, leisure, and comfort that having children can’t compete with, whereas the wage camp treats children as a straightforward cost-benefit problem that better pay would fix.

What the thread never engages with is why civil servants and dual-professional households reportedly have more kids despite Japan’s high income tax and social-insurance burden — job security and predictable schedules, not raw salary, may matter more than wage level. It also never questions whether a 450-respondent doda survey of working adults, a group skewed toward urban, salaried professionals, can speak for rural or non-regular workers at all.

  • Forza Horizon 6 for PS5 Reportedly Cancelled

A post originating from IGN reporting that the PS5 version of “Forza Horizon 6” — a title that had been positioned as an Xbox exclusive — is being cancelled sparked reactions on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board.

In the thread, some pointed to the recent leadership change atop Xbox’s gaming division and its new push for more exclusives as the reason, while others took the chance to needle Sony over its “Only on PS5” branding, touching off a back-and-forth between fans of both camps.

    Background and Key Points

Forza Horizon has been Xbox/PC-first since Playground Games launched the series in 2012 under Microsoft’s own studio banner, but that stance already cracked in 2025 when Forza Horizon 5 itself got a PS5 port — the “5” and its lukewarm reception that posters reference in the thread. Around the same time, Xbox’s video-game division saw a leadership change, widely reported as Xbox President Sarah Bond taking a more prominent role and publicly emphasizing a return to platform-exclusive titles rather than Microsoft’s brief flirtation with going fully multiplatform. Sony’s side of the joke, “Only on PS5,” is the marketing tagline the company has used for years to promote console-exclusive titles like Spider-Man and God of War, which is why posters treat Microsoft reversing course as ironic payback.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t whether the cancellation is good or bad — nearly everyone frames it positively for Xbox loyalists — but why it’s happening: some credit the new leadership’s explicit pro-exclusivity messaging, while others point to FH5’s underwhelming PS5 sales as proof multiplatform releases simply didn’t pay off financially.

What’s easy to miss is that this entire story traces back to a single IGN report relaying an X/Twitter post, not an official Microsoft statement, and Forza Horizon 6 itself hasn’t been formally announced — so “cancelled” describes a PS5 version of a game whose existence is still unconfirmed. Readers unfamiliar with the FH5 port may also assume Forza was always strictly Xbox-only, when the multiplatform experiment is barely a year old.

  • Filmed Themselves Defecating and Played It on the Dorm TV: Elite Ryukoku University Baseball Club Suspended Over In-Team Violence

Ryukoku University in Kyoto has suspended its hardball (baseball) club for one month, from July 28 to August 27, following incidents of violence between team members, theft within the dormitory, and a case in which a player filmed himself defecating and the footage was shared on the dorm’s TV. Around 20 students reportedly say they were victims of the thefts. On 5channel, many commenters questioned the closed-off culture typical of Japanese sports clubs.

Ryukoku University (Fushimi Ward, Kyoto) announced on the 27th that it had suspended its hardball club for one month over multiple instances of violence between members, theft within the dormitory, and the filming of inappropriate behavior, among other issues. The suspension runs from July 28 to August 27.

[Photo] Ryukoku University representative comments on the baseball club’s suspension: “As someone entrusted with overseeing this organization, I feel a heavy sense of responsibility”

The university held a press briefing on the 27th to explain what happened. Last May, a second-year student flew into a rage after being mocked/imitated by a first-year student, kicking him in the stomach and punching him in the shoulder several times. It also came to light that in July of this year, cash and underwear were stolen in the dormitory but the incidents were never reported to the coaching staff. About 20 students say they were victimized, and the university, in consultation with police, is having an investigative committee conduct interviews. Additionally, in February and March of last year, team members filmed themselves defecating by a river in Shiga Prefecture and played the footage on the dormitory TV to share it.

Setsuko, that's "Astro Kyudan"… (riffing on the famous line from Grave of the Fireflies, "Setsuko, that's not…"; the real manga is titled Astro Kyudan, not Scat-ro Kyudan)

    Background and Key Points

Ryukoku University is a private Buddhist school in Kyoto founded in 1639 as a seminary for the Nishi Honganji sect, one of Japan’s oldest institutions of higher learning, though its baseball program is not a Koshien-level powerhouse on the order of Waseda or Keio — the “elite” in the headline refers to its status as a respected old university, not to national baseball prestige. Like most Japanese university sports clubs, its players live communally in a team dormitory under a strict senpai-kohai hierarchy, a structure meant to build discipline but which also isolates the team from outside oversight — exactly the “closed-off culture” commenters kept invoking with the slang term yakyu-nou, or “baseball-brain,” used to mock the insular, conformist mindset such clubs are stereotyped as producing.

The thread didn’t really argue over what happened; it split instead on who should answer for it. One poster insisted the individual offenders, not the school, should be the ones apologizing, since institutional contrition teaches nobody anything — but another pointed out that because the university houses these students in a dorm it has functionally taken on a parental role, making its response unavoidable.

What the thread glosses over, buried in wordplay about “disbandment” versus “defecation,” is that the violence ran in an unexpected direction: it was a second-year student attacking a first-year, not the senior-hazes-junior pattern foreign readers might expect from Japanese sports hierarchies. The roughly twenty theft victims also suggest an organized pattern within the team rather than an isolated incident, something the posts never engage with at all.

  • Can EVs Handle Japan’s Snowy Roads? 5ch: ‘You’ve Clearly Never Driven in Snow’

A thread that kicked off with the post “EVs are defective junk — Toyota’s hybrids are the pinnacle” quickly split into two camps: one pointing to Norway’s 97% EV adoption rate as a rebuttal, and another citing the unique conditions of Japan’s heavy-snowfall regions. The exchange dragged on with comparisons of snowfall totals and the state of roads after snow removal, before the back half of the thread shifted to differences in Toyota’s and Nissan’s corporate strategies.

    Re: #132
First you'd have to ask what percentage of people even have a home garage or parking spot where they can charge

    Background and Key Points

Toyota and Nissan hardly compete on EVs at home the way this thread implies. Japan’s domestic EV share sits in the low single digits — roughly 1-2% of new car sales, dwarfed by hybrids, which is why “Toyota’s hybrids are supreme” reads as an uncontroversial default rather than a hot take to most Japanese buyers. Toyota has bet heavily on hybrid and hydrogen technology (it pioneered the mass-market hybrid with the Prius in 1997) while Nissan pushed earlier into pure EVs with the Leaf back in 2010, so the “corporate strategy” tangent the thread drifts into isn’t random — it maps onto a real, long-running industry split over which powertrain Japan should standardize on.

The thread doesn’t actually divide over “EVs good or bad” in the abstract; it splits on whether Norway’s 97% EV adoption is a valid rebuttal to snow-country skepticism, with posters arguing past each other about snow depth versus snow quality (powder versus moisture-laden Sea-of-Japan snow) and disagreeing on whether Norway’s numbers reflect real-world usability or just heavy state subsidies.

What’s missing from the exchange is that Norway’s adoption is propped up by decades of purchase-tax exemptions, toll and ferry discounts, and free public charging that Japan has never matched, so the comparison being fought over isn’t really “snow versus snow” — it’s an unsubsidized market against one of the most subsidized EV markets on earth. Readers should also know Japan’s harshest snow belt (Tohoku, Hokuriku, Hokkaido) is a small fraction of the national driving population; the debate is more relevant to a minority of Japanese drivers than the thread’s tone suggests.

  • Giants Rookie Yamato Suzuki Delivers Go-Ahead Hit in First Pro At-Bat — Yakult Starter Masanori Ishikawa Knocked Out After Giving Up 4 Runs in the First

In the Giants–Yakult clash, Giants rookie Yamato Suzuki—making his first pro start and first at-bat—came out swinging with a go-ahead RBI single and also picked up his first career stolen base. On the mound for Yakult was 46-year-old Masanori Ishikawa, making his first start of the season, who was pulled after just 7 pitches and one out, having already allowed 4 runs. His streak of winning at least one game every season since his rookie year—25 years and counting—will have to wait. Over on the thread, the lopsided run support left fans equal parts stunned and delighted.

46-year-old Masanori Ishikawa, making his first start of the season for Yakult, suffers a heartbreaking first-inning knockout — manages just one out… surrenders the go-ahead run on a mere 7 pitches and gives up 4 runs to 4 batters. Shows signs of discomfort in his left shoulder before heading to the bench and exiting the game for good. His streak of winning at least one game every season since his rookie year — 25 years running — will have to wait.

    Background and Key Points

Background: The Yomiuri Giants and Tokyo Yakult Swallows are longtime Central League rivals, and this game was played at Yakult’s home park, Jingu Stadium. Yamato Suzuki debuted with a start, an RBI single, and a stolen base all in the same game — a rare feat for any NPB rookie. On the other side, Masanori Ishikawa is a 46-year-old veteran whose claim to fame is recording at least one win every single season since his rookie year, a streak of 25 straight seasons; being pulled after seven pitches and one out put that streak in jeopardy for 2026. Current Giants manager Shinnosuke Abe has built his tenure around promoting young players from the farm system, with infield/hitting coach Hashigami frequently credited by fans for developing them, which is the context behind posts crediting “Coach Hashigami’s cultivation” and “master manager Abe.”

The thread’s actual disagreement was narrow: whether it was appropriate for the Giants to keep stealing bases and running up the score after already building a six-run lead. Several posters invoked baseball’s “unwritten rules” against padding a blowout, while others pushed back that this etiquette is outdated even in the U.S., let alone something the Giants should observe against a division rival.

What outsiders may not catch is that this “unwritten rule” is a live and somewhat old-fashioned norm specifically in NPB culture, not a universal baseball law — and the jokes about Ishikawa’s team “drilling” Suzuki in retaliation are pure fan speculation, not a reported incident.

Even the variety shows skew heavily toward an elderly audience.

How old is Mizutani's character even supposed to be at this point?

I heard it got cancelled because Makoto Fujita and the staff felt it was too weird for him to still be an active detective past 70, and just as weird that his daughters, all pushing 40, were still living at home.
Though Mizutani's also past 70 now.

    34AnonymousAug 28, 2026 07:04
Given their ages, this has got to be the final season.
Now that Narimiya's back to acting, maybe they'll wrap it up nicely with the whole old partner lineup reunited.

    37AnonymousAug 28, 2026 07:04
No idea how many episodes are in a season, but this show's had a seriously long run.
From the bit I caught, it's not as good as Netchuu Jidai (another Mizutani hit drama),
but I guess it keeps going because people are enjoying it.

They went to the trouble of adding more partners, so this is exactly how they should handle passing the torch.
    54AnonymousAug 28, 2026 07:10
They're probably scheming to cash in big with a 'See you at the movie theater for the finale' spinoff.
    79AnonymousAug 28, 2026 07:20
What about the women on either side?

    Background and Key Points

Aibou premiered on TV Asahi in 2000 as a Wednesday 9pm “suspense” slot drama, built around a Tokyo Metropolitan Police detective, played throughout by Yutaka Mizutani, who is exiled to the backwater “Special Missions Unit” precisely because he is too sharp and too inconvenient for the bureaucracy above him. The show’s format is unusual by American standards: each “season” (25 now, a record for a continuously running Japanese drama) pairs a regular weekly run with separate feature-length “SP” specials, and the junior partner role has rotated across several actors over 25 years rather than staying fixed — Terawaki is simply the latest, having held the seat since around 2014, which is what “12th year” refers to. The politics-and-police-corruption plotline the posts reference (prime ministers, National Police Agency infighting) has been the show’s backbone since the beginning, not a recent addition.

Where the thread actually splits is generational fatigue versus format loyalty: several posters want the show retired or want Mizutani’s character quietly written off as a retired PI given his real-life age, while others explicitly want a callback to the earlier Kameyama–Kobe pairing rather than the current one, treating the partner rotation itself as the show’s real narrative engine.

What the thread doesn’t spell out for outside readers is that the sidelined-detective premise was the joke’s built-in answer from day one — the character was never meant to be a conventional active-duty cop, which undercuts the “too old for fieldwork” complaints as a misreading of the show’s own setup. Readers may also assume “Season 25” means 25 discrete series in the Western sense, when in practice it reflects one continuously branded institution with a rotating supporting cast, closer to a long-running anthology franchise than a serialized single story needing an “ending” at all.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Express+) thread “‘Aibou Season 25’ Premieres in October! Yutaka Mizutani & Yasufumi Terawaki’s ‘Golden Duo’ Enters Year 12.”

  • Linear Rain Band Forecast Missed Again — Hokuriku Follows Chiba

A linear rain band formed in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in the early hours of the 27th, triggering an emergency heavy rain warning — but the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) failed to predict it in advance. Following the miss during the August 13 Chiba downpour, this second “missed forecast” sparked a mix of reactions on 5ch: some defended the agency, arguing preparation should simply assume forecasts will fail; others voiced broader distrust of weather forecasting or called for greater use of AI.

The Level 5 emergency heavy rain warnings issued for Ishikawa and Toyama on the morning of the 27th were triggered by record-breaking rainfall from a linear rain band. However, the JMA was unable to predict the first band that formed in the early morning hours or warn in advance that danger was imminent. The same thing happened during the August 13 Chiba downpour, highlighting ongoing problems with forecast accuracy.

According to the JMA, linear rain bands formed three times in Ishikawa on the 27th — at 3:08 a.m., 6:19 a.m., and 8:48 a.m. — and twice in Toyama, at 2:58 a.m. and 6:08 a.m.

The JMA issues both a “half-day-ahead forecast” and an “imminent forecast,” the latter indicating a heightened chance of a linear rain band forming within three hours, to urge caution. The imminent forecast in particular is a newly launched, higher-precision service that only began operating this past May.

Ironic dilemma: typhoons, which we can actually predict, usually aren't that catastrophic, while guerrilla downpours and linear rain bands — which we can't predict — are often the ones that turn into real disasters
    165AnonymousAug 27, 2026 18:51
    Re: #160
Maybe that's actually a sign of progress — the remaining hard cases are just the ones that are genuinely hard to predict

Isn't accurate prediction just genuinely hard?
If rough guessing is good enough, even an amateur can spot a nasty-looking rain cloud
There's tons of information out there now
With humidity like a sauna, a typhoon nearby, and a weather map showing rain clouds ready to dump — heavy rain is basically guaranteed
It's actually weirder to be caught off guard

They pop up out of nowhere sometimes though
Might need data on terrain, whether there's a data center or factory nearby, highways, and other heat sources from human activity too

    Re: #167
When I'm bored I check the rain radar sometimes, and even on a clearly sunny day there are red patches of rain clouds popping up here and there — it's just hopeless. Even if they could predict it, the infrastructure still isn't built to withstand torrential rain anyway

my parents' house had water under the floor
Namu Amida Butsu (a Buddhist prayer, roughly "rest in peace")

    Background and Key Points

The JMA’s linear rain band (“senjo kousetai”) alerts operate on two tracks: a half-day-ahead outlook and, since this past May, a three-hour “imminent forecast” — a genuinely new product with barely three months of live data behind it when it missed both the August 13 Chiba band and this one in Ishikawa/Toyama on the 27th. The Level 5 emergency warning it eventually triggered is Japan’s top tier on a five-level scale, meaning a disaster is already assessed as underway or imminent — it’s a damage-scale alert, not a prediction tool, which is part of why “missing” a forecast and “reacting late” with Level 5 are really two separate failures being blamed on one agency.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t forecasting-vs-no-forecasting, it’s whether the miss reflects an inherent physical limit or a fixable institutional one: posters who invoked “just assume it’ll fail” or noted linear bands are relatively more tractable than sudden guerrilla downpours were arguing prediction has a hard ceiling, while the AI proponents and those citing accumulating data implied better modeling is just a matter of time and volume.

What the thread never engages with is that the “imminent forecast” is only months old — judging it against decades-old typhoon-tracking accuracy, as several posts implicitly do, sets an unfair bar. It also conflates the JMA, a public agency, with commercial sites like tenki.jp, a separate operator with its own model and track record, as though one failure indicts both.

A post claiming the Switch 2 “hasn’t become a mainstream boom” appeared on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board and sparked a heated debate. Hard numbers piled up fast — 6.7 million units shipped domestically, comparisons of worldwide sales against the PS5 — as the thread split over just what actually counts as a “boom.”

The average casual crowd is already hooked on short-form videos that hit them with dopamine in seconds.
    Same goes for elementary schoolers.
Nobody's getting hooked on a Switch 2 game when it costs ¥70,000, makes you learn a bunch of fiddly controls, and isn't even fun.

    Re: #88
That's what you call fizzling out?

    Background and Key Points

The Switch 2 launched in Japan in June 2025 and, per the thread’s own Famitsu-sourced figures, had shipped roughly 6.7 million units domestically by the end of June 2026, against a Switch 1 lifetime total of 38.55 million and a PS5 global lifetime figure the posters put near 96–100 million. Japanese hardware “shipment” (shukka) numbers, which Famitsu and outlets like teitengame.com track, count units sent to retailers, not units actually sold to consumers — a distinction foreign readers used to Western sell-through data (NPD, etc.) often miss, and one nobody in the thread flags.

The actual fault line in the thread isn’t whether the Switch 2 is selling — nobody disputes the shipment totals — it’s whether strong sales equal a “boom” (shakai genshou, a genuine mainstream cultural moment). Critics argue a real boom shows up outside gaming circles entirely, pointing to how Ghost of Tsushima got picked up by a mainstream TV variety show while nothing comparable has happened for Switch 2; defenders counter with raw unit counts and point out the console is closing in on PS5’s cumulative shipments despite launching decades later into the cycle.

What the thread never addresses is the asymmetry in those comparisons: PS5’s ~96–100 million is a worldwide, multi-year lifetime figure, while Switch 2’s 6.7 million is domestic-only after about a year on sale — not remotely an apples-to-apples “who’s really winning” comparison, even though posters on both sides use it that way. The thread’s title slur, “Nintendo buta,” is standard antagonistic 5ch console-war shorthand, not a reflection of genuine hostility toward Nintendo as a company.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Do Nintendo fanboys (lit. “Nintendo pigs,” a derogatory slang term) even understand why the Switch 2 isn’t a mainstream boom right now?“
