  • Linear Rain Band Forecast Missed Again — Hokuriku Follows Chiba

A linear rain band formed in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures in the early hours of the 27th, triggering an emergency heavy rain warning — but the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) failed to predict it in advance. Following the miss during the August 13 Chiba downpour, this second “missed forecast” sparked a mix of reactions on 5ch: some defended the agency, arguing preparation should simply assume forecasts will fail; others voiced broader distrust of weather forecasting or called for greater use of AI.

The Level 5 emergency heavy rain warnings issued for Ishikawa and Toyama on the morning of the 27th were triggered by record-breaking rainfall from a linear rain band. However, the JMA was unable to predict the first band that formed in the early morning hours or warn in advance that danger was imminent. The same thing happened during the August 13 Chiba downpour, highlighting ongoing problems with forecast accuracy.

According to the JMA, linear rain bands formed three times in Ishikawa on the 27th — at 3:08 a.m., 6:19 a.m., and 8:48 a.m. — and twice in Toyama, at 2:58 a.m. and 6:08 a.m.

The JMA issues both a “half-day-ahead forecast” and an “imminent forecast,” the latter indicating a heightened chance of a linear rain band forming within three hours, to urge caution. The imminent forecast in particular is a newly launched, higher-precision service that only began operating this past May.

    Background and Key Points

The JMA’s linear rain band (“senjo kousetai”) alerts operate on two tracks: a half-day-ahead outlook and, since this past May, a three-hour “imminent forecast” — a genuinely new product with barely three months of live data behind it when it missed both the August 13 Chiba band and this one in Ishikawa/Toyama on the 27th. The Level 5 emergency warning it eventually triggered is Japan’s top tier on a five-level scale, meaning a disaster is already assessed as underway or imminent — it’s a damage-scale alert, not a prediction tool, which is part of why “missing” a forecast and “reacting late” with Level 5 are really two separate failures being blamed on one agency.

The thread’s actual fault line isn’t forecasting-vs-no-forecasting, it’s whether the miss reflects an inherent physical limit or a fixable institutional one: posters who invoked “just assume it’ll fail” or noted linear bands are relatively more tractable than sudden guerrilla downpours were arguing prediction has a hard ceiling, while the AI proponents and those citing accumulating data implied better modeling is just a matter of time and volume.

What the thread never engages with is that the “imminent forecast” is only months old — judging it against decades-old typhoon-tracking accuracy, as several posts implicitly do, sets an unfair bar. It also conflates the JMA, a public agency, with commercial sites like tenki.jp, a separate operator with its own model and track record, as though one failure indicts both.

    Re: #88
That's what you call fizzling out?

    Background and Key Points

The Switch 2 launched in Japan in June 2025 and, per the thread’s own Famitsu-sourced figures, had shipped roughly 6.7 million units domestically by the end of June 2026, against a Switch 1 lifetime total of 38.55 million and a PS5 global lifetime figure the posters put near 96–100 million. Japanese hardware “shipment” (shukka) numbers, which Famitsu and outlets like teitengame.com track, count units sent to retailers, not units actually sold to consumers — a distinction foreign readers used to Western sell-through data (NPD, etc.) often miss, and one nobody in the thread flags.

The actual fault line in the thread isn’t whether the Switch 2 is selling — nobody disputes the shipment totals — it’s whether strong sales equal a “boom” (shakai genshou, a genuine mainstream cultural moment). Critics argue a real boom shows up outside gaming circles entirely, pointing to how Ghost of Tsushima got picked up by a mainstream TV variety show while nothing comparable has happened for Switch 2; defenders counter with raw unit counts and point out the console is closing in on PS5’s cumulative shipments despite launching decades later into the cycle.

What the thread never addresses is the asymmetry in those comparisons: PS5’s ~96–100 million is a worldwide, multi-year lifetime figure, while Switch 2’s 6.7 million is domestic-only after about a year on sale — not remotely an apples-to-apples “who’s really winning” comparison, even though posters on both sides use it that way. The thread’s title slur, “Nintendo buta,” is standard antagonistic 5ch console-war shorthand, not a reflection of genuine hostility toward Nintendo as a company.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Do Nintendo fanboys (lit. “Nintendo pigs,” a derogatory slang term) even understand why the Switch 2 isn’t a mainstream boom right now?“

  • Ken Hirai’s ‘POP STAR’ Hits 100 Million Streams — 5ch Reacts: ‘Ah, the Nostalgic VIP STAR Days lol’

News that Ken Hirai’s song “POP STAR” surpassed 100 million cumulative streams sparked a wave of nostalgia on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports Express+ board, with users reminiscing about the 2ch VIP board of the 2000s. The discussion ranged from the song’s role as the theme for the drama “Kiken na Aneki” (Dangerous Big Sister) to the “VIP STAR” meme from back in the day and the evolution of Hirai Ken’s music.

Ken Hirai’s “POP STAR” has become his second song ever to surpass 100 million cumulative streams, following “Hitomi wo Tojite” (“Close Your Eyes”), according to the latest Oricon Weekly Streaming Ranking released on the 26th.

Weekly streams came in at 397,000 (397,011), bringing cumulative streams to 100.31 million (100,314,464).

The song was released as a CD single in October 2005. It served as the theme song for the drama “Kiken na Aneki” (“Dangerous Big Sister,” Fuji TV), starring Misaki Ito and Mirai Moriyama.

That's just what's on the family registry — doesn't mean their DNA isn't mixed

    Background and Key Points

Ken Hirai debuted in 1995 and became one of Japan’s defining major-label pop vocalists through the 2000s; “POP STAR,” released in October 2005, was his ninth single and the theme for the Fuji TV drama “Kiken na Aneki.” Oricon’s cumulative-streaming milestone (100 million-plus) reflects Spotify/Apple Music/YouTube-style plays tallied since streaming became trackable, not the song’s original 2005 chart performance — CD sales and platform streams are separate metrics in Japan, and older hits often cross these round numbers only recently as domestic streaming adoption has caught up. The “VIP STAR” reference is to 2channel’s old VIP (Volunteer Experience People) board, an anything-goes forum whose users in the mid-2000s turned “POP STAR” into an in-joke/meme, distinct from the more serious News/Lounge boards; 5ch is 2channel’s successor site after a 2017 rebrand.

The thread didn’t converge on any single verdict about the song itself; the actual fault line was generational nostalgia for the old VIP board versus a parallel, more critical undercurrent about Hirai’s later reliance on falsetto and whether he counts as a top-tier male vocalist. A tangential sub-thread comparing him to King Gnu also surfaced a real distinction — Gnu’s overseas anime-driven streams inflate their numbers in a way Hirai’s Japan-only audience can’t match, which is why “second song to ever hit 100 million” undersells his career.

What’s easy to miss: the number is a streaming-era retrofit onto a pre-streaming hit, so it says more about catalog longevity and algorithmic rediscovery than about 2005-era popularity.

  • 5ch VIP Board Thread on ’24-Hour Drinking Marathon’ Draws Flood of Concerned Replies

A thread titled “(´;ω;`) I’m gonna drink for 24 hours starting now!!!” popped up on 5channel’s Newssoku VIP board, with the poster live-blogging their drinking session — starting with seared bonito (katsuo tataki) as a snack, washed down with shochu-and-cola and whiskey.

Fellow posters flooded in with worried warnings like “you’re gonna get kidney stones” and “are you gonna puke again,” but the poster ignored them and kept drinking late into the night.

Alcohol itself doesn't directly cause kidney stones, but the dehydration and excess intake of certain substances that come with drinking significantly raise the risk of urinary stones. There's also a folk myth that "drinking beer to boost urine output will flush the stones out," but that's medically false — in fact, it's known to backfire.

    Background and Key Points

Since the article doesn’t hinge on a formal institution or numbers-driven controversy, I’ll focus the background on the format itself and the specific cultural touchpoints the thread raises, per the “thin thread” fallback.

The “AA” ( (´;ω;`) ) live-blog format is a longstanding tradition on 5channel’s Newssoku VIP board, one of the site’s most active boards for anonymous, off-the-cuff threads. Posters routinely narrate risky or self-destructive activities in real time — all-night gaming, extreme diets, gambling binges — and this “drink for 24 hours” thread fits that mold. The emoji-style kaomoji faces function as a stand-in identity for the anonymous original poster, letting readers track a single continuous narrator across hundreds of replies without a username. Katsuo tataki (seared, lightly-charred bonito, usually served with garlic, ginger, and ponzu) and shochu-cola highballs are everyday izakaya staples in Japan, not exotic choices — the drink pairing readers might find odd is actually one of the most common cheap drinking combinations sold at convenience stores.

The thread’s real split isn’t about whether the marathon is a good idea — virtually everyone agrees it’s reckless — but about *why* it’s dangerous. One camp fixates on kidney stones as the looming consequence, while another poster corrects the record: alcohol doesn’t directly cause stones, but the dehydration and byproducts of heavy drinking raise the risk, and the folk belief that beer “flushes out” stones is specifically debunked as backfiring medically. That exchange, not the drinking itself, is where the thread’s only real disagreement plays out.

What outside readers likely miss: nobody in the thread raises Japan’s comparatively lax cultural and legal tolerance for solo binge drinking, or that this kind of live-blogged self-endangerment is treated as low-stakes internet entertainment rather than a cry for help — which is why the replies are teasing rather than alarmed.

Women sometimes wear a T-back when they're in something like a one-piece outfit, where regular underwear lines would show through and look obvious.

    Background and Key Points

I want to swim in a women’s swimsuit — pool refusal thread

Bengo4.com runs a regular column translating legal-advice submissions its lawyers receive, and swimwear disputes are apparently a recurring summer feature. The Japanese legal hook is the Minor Offenses Act (軽犯罪法), Article 1, Item 20, which criminalizes “exposing buttocks, thighs, or other body parts in public in a way likely to provoke disgust” — a deliberately vague standard from 1948 that predates modern swimwear norms and leaves enforcement to local police and, ultimately, individual pool staff. There is no explicit ban on cross-gender swimwear in Japanese law; refusals at the pool level are a matter of facility house rules (often justified as “causing a disturbance” among other patrons), not statute.

The thread’s actual disagreement wasn’t over whether the man should be allowed to swim in a women’s suit — posters mostly treated that as a lost cause — but over whether the underlying complaint (that men can’t cover their nipples while women’s tops are designed to) reflects a genuine, defensible asymmetry in modesty standards, or whether it’s a fig leaf for wanting to wear revealing/fetishized swimwear (the “school swimsuit” references). One side argued the nipple-exposure double standard is logically sound; the other dismissed the whole framing as pretextual.

What the thread never addresses is that pools refusing entry over swimwear are almost never invoking the Minor Offenses Act directly — that law targets public indecency broadly and is rarely the actual basis cited by facility operators, who instead rely on contractual “right of refusal” clauses in their usage terms. Readers unfamiliar with Japan may assume a criminal statute is being enforced against this man specifically, when in practice it’s private venue policy, with the criminal law cited by posters mostly as speculative color.

  • ‘Buy-to-Play Fans Are Old Farts’ Claim Draws Backlash — Debate Erupts Over Gacha’s Merits

A thread mocking people who say “No gacha for me, I only play buy-to-play games” as “old farts” backfired — replies piled up criticizing gacha’s gambling-like mechanics and manipulative monetization, turning into a wave of backlash against gacha itself. Supporters of buy-to-play games chimed in with comments like “these games are designed to become less fun” and “Japanese people are the biggest gambling addicts in the world,” making it clear this isn’t just a simple generational divide.

    Re: #71
It's just the difference between a hostess club and a pachislot parlor.

    Background and Key Points

The word gacha comes from gachapon, the coin-operated capsule-toy machines that have sold random collectible figures in Japan since the 1960s; mobile developers borrowed the mechanic wholesale, so “gacha games” means titles monetized through randomized paid pulls rather than a genre in itself. Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency only ever banned one specific variant, “kompu gacha” (complete gacha, where players had to assemble a full set to win a rare item), in 2012 after public outcry — ordinary single- and multi-pull gacha, including pity systems, remained legal and is now the default monetization model for nearly all Japanese mobile titles and even console-adjacent spinoffs like Pokémon TCG Pocket. Pachinko, raised in the thread as a comparison point, occupies a separate legal category: Japanese law does not classify it as gambling because payouts are exchanged for prizes rather than cash directly at the parlor.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t young-vs-old, despite the “old fart” bait in the title — posters explicitly argued that the heaviest former gacha spenders are now the ones most soured on it, meaning burnout from experience, not generational taste, was the dividing line. A second, quieter disagreement ran underneath: whether the problem is gacha itself or Japanese-developed gacha specifically, with some insisting Chinese and Western titles have gotten comparatively more generous.

What outside readers likely miss is that “buy-to-play” doesn’t mean gacha-free in practice — the thread itself flagged FF14 and Monster Hunter Wilds, both premium titles, for layering in gacha-adjacent live-service monetization, undercutting the clean binary the original post assumed.

  • Ryukoku University Baseball Team Rocked by Assault, Shared Defecation Videos — 5ch: ‘And This Is Supposed to Be Part of Their Education’

Ryukoku University announced on August 27 that members of its hardball baseball team had assaulted fellow teammates and filmed themselves defecating in a river, then shared the footage on a television in the team dormitory. More than 20 players in the dorm had also had money and other belongings stolen, but this was never reported to coaches. Despite a one-month suspension of team activities, the team is still set to compete when the fall league opens on September 5 — a decision that drew skepticism on 5ch.

On the 27th, Ryukoku University announced that its hardball baseball team, a member of the Kansai Big Six Baseball League, had engaged in problematic conduct including assaults between teammates and inappropriate video filming. The team had been under a one-month suspension of activities through that same day. It is scheduled to compete when the fall league season opens on September 5.

According to the announcement, in May of last year a then-second-year student kicked a first-year student in the stomach and otherwise assaulted him after forcing him to impersonate him. Between March and June of this year, a student coach who is now a third-year student slapped three first-year students in the face and struck them on the shoulder. In February of last year, a member grabbed a prospective student — who had joined practice before formally enrolling — by the collar while reprimanding him. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

It also came to light that around February and March of last year, several team members filmed themselves defecating in a river in Shiga Prefecture and shared the footage by playing it on a television in the team’s dormitory in Otsu. More than 20 people in the dorm had had money and other items stolen, but this had not been reported to coaches.

Does playing baseball until you're 20 make you lose your mind?
Or is it only the ones who are already messed up who keep playing baseball until 20?

    Background and Key Points

Ryukoku University is a Kyoto institution rooted in Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and its hardball team plays in the Kansai Big Six Baseball League, one of the regional university circuits that feed talent toward Japan’s amateur and professional baseball pipeline. Japanese collegiate sports clubs run on a rigid senpai-kohai (senior-junior) hierarchy, and self-policing by the university itself, rather than any outside athletic body, is the norm — which is why a month-long internal suspension, followed by a return to competition in time for the September 5 season opener, was the university’s own chosen remedy rather than a league-imposed sanction.

The disagreement in the thread isn’t really about whether the conduct was wrong — almost no one defends it. It splits between posters who treat this as unsurprising, baked-in baseball-club culture (treating hazing and dominance rituals as an open secret across the sport) and posters angrier that the institution calling itself “education” is letting the team play again so quickly with no visible accountability. A smaller thread of comments tries to generalize the incident into a claim about repressed Japanese aggression, which is a leap the facts of this specific case don’t support.

What outside readers may miss: the “one-month suspension, then back on the field for the new season” pattern is a common, criticized shape for Japanese sports-scandal responses — short internal punishment followed by resumed competition, with no independent investigation body involved. Also worth noting: the Shohei Ohtani jokes in the thread are just riffing on his fame as Japan’s most famous baseball export; he has no actual connection to Ryukoku University or this case.

  • Roki Sasaki Hits the IL: Finger Blister Sidelines Him Down the Stretch

Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki was pulled after just 3⅓ innings against the Braves due to a finger blister, and has now been placed on the injured list. On 5channel, comments calling him “too much of a Spelunker” (a nod to the fragile video-game character, used here to mean injury-prone) stood out, along with posts explaining that he can’t use super glue on the blister and has to make do with medical tape instead. With attention on whether he could hold down his rotation spot, reactions poured in comparing this setback to last year’s.

Roki Sasaki of the Los Angeles Dodgers started on the road against the Atlanta Braves on August 26 (local time), a game the Dodgers lost 6-5. He allowed 4 runs in 3⅓ innings and missed out on his 6th win of the season (5th loss).

Sasaki gave up a go-ahead solo home run to the Braves’ No. 3 hitter Matt Olson in the first inning, but held them scoreless in the second and third. Then, with the score 3-1, trouble hit in the fourth.

Sasaki walked leadoff batter Ozzie Albies, who then stole second. A single by No. 7 hitter Mike Yastrzemski put runners on first and third with none out, and a sacrifice fly from Austin Riley brought in a run.

Ohtani starts, Sasaki relieves — that's the postseason plan. The real season for the Dodgers is the playoffs anyway. As a regular-season starter Sasaki's basically unusable, Sugano-level, but as a long reliever in short-series ball he's excellent and racks up strikeouts. But if he can't build a game as a starter, can't eat innings, can't hold a rotation spot, and has a bad ERA, then he's no different from Sugano.
    44AnonymousAug 28, 2026 02:55

    47AnonymousAug 28, 2026 03:00
Well, if it's a blister, can't be helped. The roster's clearly aging this year, wins keep slipping away, and a championship looks unlikely anyway, so he might as well take his time resting.

Last year he only got called up to the majors right at the very end — even though he hadn't done much in Oklahoma either — and they scraped by using him as a reliever. This year is the real test of whether he can actually start. He's inconsistent, and my impression is he's given up too many runs overall. From Roberts's perspective, isn't the whole "test him as a starter" plan looking shaky?
    59AnonymousAug 28, 2026 03:55

    80AnonymousAug 28, 2026 05:05
    Re: #78
That counts as using a sticky substance, so it's banned. Roberts said he's fine to practice normally if he wraps it in medical tape, but of course that's banned in games too.

    Background and Key Points

Roki Sasaki, the 23-year-old Japanese right-hander who signed with the Dodgers this offseason after a heavily scouted NPB career with the Chiba Lotte Marines, is on the injured list with a finger blister after lasting just 3⅓ innings against the Braves on August 26. This is his second MLB season; last year he was called up to the majors only very late (after unremarkable Triple-A time in Oklahoma) and pitched almost exclusively as a reliever down the stretch. This year was meant to be his real audition as a starter, but he’s now failed to complete a full season two years running — though, as posters point out, only one of those absences was actually injury-related, since last year’s shortened role was a demotion/roster decision, not a physical issue. Blisters on pitching fingers are a known MLB scourge (fingertip skin tears from spin-heavy grips like Sasaki’s splitter), and treatment is tightly regulated: sticky substances like super glue are banned by MLB’s foreign-substance rules, so pitchers are generally limited to medical tape, which itself isn’t permitted for in-game use either.

The thread’s real disagreement isn’t about the blister itself but about what it means for his future: some see a pitcher who simply can’t hold a rotation spot and is being written off as “unusable” as a starter (with one comparing him unfavorably to journeyman Tomoyuki Sugano), while others argue he’s already exceeding expectations for a two-year pro and that the Dodgers’ postseason-first roster construction (Ohtani starting, Sasaki as a shutdown relief weapon in October) makes his regular-season workload almost beside the point.

What outside readers likely miss is that “Spelunker,” the recurring nickname, references a notoriously fragile 1980s Japanese platformer character who dies from minor falls — it’s a pure injury-prone joke, not a comment on skill. Also worth noting: the thread never mentions that blister injuries are rarely long-term; they’re typically a two-to-three week absence, not a structural setback.

This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[MLB] Roki Sasaki placed on the injured list — a heartbreaking exit down the stretch, still no complete season.”

I just hope she's in perfect shape for CDTV (a major Japanese music show) though.

Everyone's probably wired from this packed schedule right now, but the fatigue must really be piling up
Needing five alarms means she's barely sleeping at all.
    49AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:49
It always starts with oversleeping, doesn't it.
    50AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:49
This is a level of busy nobody's ever experienced before
Apparently during Morning Musume's golden era, members were only getting 1-2 hours of sleep a night.
    52AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:52
If she lives alone, isn't she probably rooming with the other members who are from outside Tokyo?
    53AnonymousAug 27, 2026 21:53
Five alarms means she's seriously exhausted 😢
    60AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:00
Back when I had to be up at 3:30am for work, I was anxious no matter how many alarms I set
Too anxious, actually — I'd always wake up before the alarm even went off.
    65AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:04
In her earlier blog post her mom was around and her dad drove her, so she's living at home
Her parents are probably both working, so no one's around on weekday afternoons.

Wasn't that because she couldn't go outside during the heavy rain in Chiba?

Isn't that related to Uta Con (a music TV program)? Not sure though.

If a member ends up needing to rest, I'm worried it could affect the Kohaku lineup.
    91AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:37
    Re: #88
Both Momoiro Clover Z and Me:I have had members sit out the Kohaku before.
    93AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:38
I wonder if they'll make it through the fall tour okay
I really hope they can pull through somehow.
    95AnonymousAug 27, 2026 22:42
    Re: #93
I've said this before, but the dumbest outcome would be attending every single fall tour date only to collapse on New Year's Eve
They should skip a show here and there when they need to.

    Background and Key Points

Risachi Irie’s oversleeping incident sits at the intersection of Hello! Project’s notoriously grueling idol schedules and a fanbase that’s grown attentive to burnout signals. Juice=Juice, a Hello! Project girl group under Up-Front Works, has been one of the label’s busiest units this year, and members are frequently expected to arrive at venues already camera-ready — hair and makeup done before call time — which is why missing that window, rather than just being “late,” reads as alarming to fans. The backdrop threads mention (Kohaku Uta Gassen, NHK’s year-end broadcast watched by tens of millions, and CDTV, a major weekly music countdown) are events idols are essentially never allowed to no-show; a lineup change or absence is treated as newsworthy in itself, which is why posters kept circling back to those dates rather than the oversleeping itself.

The thread didn’t really split over whether Irie is exhausted — nearly everyone agreed she is. The actual disagreement was over cause and severity: some read five unheard alarms as garden-variety overwork consistent with a packed promotional stretch, while others (invoking Kawashima’s past experience with disorientation, and the “adrenaline burns out” comments) framed it as a potential early warning sign of the kind of prolonged burnout that has sidelined Hello! Project members before.

What outside readers likely miss is scale: comment #50’s reference to Morning Musume’s “golden era” members surviving on 1-2 hours of sleep isn’t hyperbole for effect — grueling, self-reinforcing overwork culture has a real documented history in Hello! Project, which is precisely why fans treat a single overslept alarm as a symptom worth watching rather than a one-off mishap. The thread never mentions whether agency has commented or whether any schedule adjustment is planned, so the concern remains entirely fan speculation at this point.

  • Kingkong’s Nishino Reveals His ‘Never-Hire’ Checklist for Young Staff: ‘Salary Thieves,’ ‘Gloomy People’

Akihiro Nishino of the comedy duo Kingkong posted his “10 conditions for young hires I will never take on” on his X (formerly Twitter) account. Lines like “anyone who says quality over quantity is the worst possible cost-performance” sparked backlash on the forum thread, with posters accusing him of demanding work that skirts Japan’s labor laws and mocking the vibe as a “homey black company” (sarcastic slang mashing up a friendly job-ad buzzword with the term for an exploitative workplace). Even so, some commenters admitted there’s something to the underlying point about the importance of putting in the reps.

Kingkong’s Nishino: What are the traits of young hires he’ll never take on? “Flat-out salary thieves,” “won’t even talk”

Akihiro Nishino (46), of the comedy duo Kingkong, updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 27th, publishing his “10 conditions for young hires I will never take on.”

Nishino wrote: “People who say ‘quality over quantity’ right from the start → chasing quality before you’ve even put in the reps is the worst possible cost-performance,” and “Gloomy people, people who speak too quietly → it spreads through the team, so you end up paying extra just to fix the mood.”

    It's not about talent.
This is exactly the kind of thing a shady CEO who works people harder than labor law allows would say.

You mean like one of those European art films that air on local TV late at night — a man and woman with cigarettes dangling from their mouths mutter something in a dim, curtained room, and two hours later it's just… over?

    well, that's because it's basically a cult, isn't it.

This guy sounds fully ready to write off even legitimate employee complaints as "haters."
Sounds exactly like the kind of employee a cozy, "at-home" black company (an exploitative workplace with a friendly-sounding front) would want.

I'd bet almost everything Nishino says here is just secondhand wisdom from the CEOs and investors he hangs around.

Calling yourself a "comedian" is just an escape hatch.
What has this guy actually achieved as a businessman?
It's not like he's taken a company public or anything.
    57AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:05
A good company normally takes someone with flaws like that,
builds up whatever strengths they have,
and trains away the weak points.
So doesn't this just mean it's an incompetent company that can't — or won't — train its people?
    59AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:07
    Re: #57
    Exactly.
What's the point of proudly declaring "we have zero intention of developing people" — that's just admitting your own incompetence.
    80AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:24
    *Except for Hiroyuki-san, apparently.

    Peak lame.
    84AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:27

The best part is you tacked on the polite "san" instead of just dropping the name bare — that's the funniest bit.
    81AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:25
    Re: #1
This is probably just him venting because his company is packed with nothing but this type:
the "please let me learn at your side, Nishino-san!" crowd,
the "I may have nothing but enthusiasm, but I'll give it my all!" crowd.
Sounds exactly like something a Poupelle true believer (fan of his "Poupelle of Chimney Town" franchise) would say.
    89AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:31
    Re: #81
How adorably naive of you to think Nishino actually does enough real work to have anything to complain about.
You're precisely the kind of pure, simple soul he's looking for.
    82AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:25
Well, fair point — most people who say "quality over quantity" are usually just trying to dodge putting in the reps.
    85AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:27

Something I only figured out once I got older:
the ones with real stamina are the ones who win.
    88AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:30
    Re: #85
Yeah, unless you're either extremely sharp or extremely dim,
it's the ones with stamina who put in the volume that end up growing and getting results.
    95AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:37
    Re: #88
Honestly, just moving fast alone tends to get you noticed anyway,
and I've never once met someone with good stamina who was also a negative thinker.
    99AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:43
    Re: #88
I think that can go either way depending on the job and the balance needed.
Whether quantity or quality is "right" really depends on the case.
    103AnonymousAug 28, 2026 01:46
    Re: #99
Nah, in practice there's almost nobody the advice "think about quality before putting in the volume" actually fits.
Honestly, I've never even seen that pattern play out.
    129AnonymousAug 28, 2026 03:19
    Re: #103
I think we're probably just starting from different assumptions about what "quality" means here, or picturing a different situation.

In an environment where a single mistake is costly, you'd coach for quality (accuracy) first and ask for volume later.
On the flip side, in an environment where mistakes are tolerable or time pressure matters more, you'd prioritize quantity over quality.

I wrote my comment on the simple assumption that the balance shifts depending on which factor matters most.
    138AnonymousAug 28, 2026 03:38
Anyone working under Nishino to make garbage anime like that is a straight-up slave.

    Background and Key Points

Akihiro Nishino, half of the comedy duo Kingkong, has spent the past decade building a business identity that runs alongside his stand-up career: he wrote and illustrated the picture book “Poupelle of Chimney Town,” turned it into a hit anime film franchise, and runs an online membership community (an “online salon”) along with production companies that employ young staff to help make and merchandise that IP. In Japan, the phrase “black company” (burakku kigyō) is shorthand for an employer that pushes hours or conditions beyond what the Labor Standards Act allows — a well-worn complaint after years of “work-style reform” campaigns meant to curb exactly that. Posters’ jab about a “homey black company” plays on that term, suggesting Nishino dresses exploitative expectations in friendly, mentor-style language.

The thread’s real fault line wasn’t over labor law so much as over whether “quantity before quality” is sound career advice or a rationalization for a company unwilling to train people. Several posters (57, 59) argued that a competent employer builds up weak hires rather than screening them out, framing Nishino’s list as an admission of managerial failure; others (82, 85, 88) agreed with the underlying point that stamina and repetition, not early polish, are what actually produce growth.

What’s easy to miss is that Nishino’s ventures lean heavily on his online-salon membership base — fans who pay to participate and sometimes end up working for him — which is why the “cult” and “Poupelle true believer” jabs (17, 81) carry more bite than they’d have for an ordinary company; the thread never establishes actual labor-law violations, only suspicion based on his rhetoric.
