The story
A post claiming the Switch 2 “hasn’t become a mainstream boom” appeared on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board and sparked a heated debate. Hard numbers piled up fast — 6.7 million units shipped domestically, comparisons of worldwide sales against the PS5 — as the thread split over just what actually counts as a “boom.”
What people said
The average casual crowd is already hooked on short-form videos that hit them with dopamine in seconds.
Same goes for elementary schoolers.
Nobody's getting hooked on a Switch 2 game when it costs ¥70,000, makes you learn a bunch of fiddly controls, and isn't even fun.

Probably just because it's expensive.
Isn't it because they haven't put out any first- or second-string titles besides Mario Kart yet?

Wait, you haven't played Splatoon, Donkey Kong, or Pokémon? ("Nishi-kun" = a derisive nickname for Nintendo fanboys)
Go actually play some games.

Re: #6
Then why haven't you bought a PS5 yourself, if you're so busy hyping it up as cheaper and more powerful than the Switch 2?

I mean they've put out third- and fourth-string titles too (going by expected sales tiers).

Short-form video seems like it could actually mess with kids' development, right?
Isn't it kind of alarming that kids are stuck scrolling nonstop just to keep the dopamine flowing?

On top of that, combined North American and international grosses have topped $2,229,461,878 (about ¥354.4 billion), surpassing Avengers: Infinity War and landing at #6 all-time in under a month since release.
It's only $35 million behind #5 Titanic, so passing it is just a matter of time.
Hey Saturday-san, who's your favorite Chiikawa character?

They just leave short-form videos playing nonstop while gaming.
Apparently that's more "efficient."

Re: #13
Well, the Switch 2 is "dead last worldwide in both numbers and specs,"
so if you want to talk big, do it after you've passed the PS5's roughly 96 million units — the actual world number one. 🤗

If the PS5 is selling that well, why do its games sell basically nothing in Japan?

Re: #16
If it were really trending, you'd expect it to show up somewhere outside gaming circles too — so why does it never come up at all?
Ghost of Tsushima, for instance, got a whole feature on Sekai Fushigi Hakken (a Japanese TV show).
Nothing like that ever happens for the PS5. Is it really the world's #1?

Just like the Wii-to-Wii U transition, the public's gotten tired of Nintendo doing the same thing over again.
But don't worry, piggy ("buta" = a derogatory nickname for Nintendo fans).
Give it ten years and the world will forget about Nintendo, and then it'll sell well again.
Guess you'll just have to grin and bear it.

It's a big deal that smartphones — short-form video included — have become totally normal even for young kids.
And it's not just Roblox; more apps and services aimed at kids keep catching on.
Unlocking YouTube on the Switch 2 would probably help with kid demand — wonder why they haven't done it.

Only 1.49 million units left to catch the PS5.

Forget Famitsu-only numbers, the PS5's about to hit 100 million.
People got suckered in by Mario Kart World and had nothing else to play, so they sold their consoles.

Why do people assume slapping the word "Lite" on something automatically makes it smaller and cheaper?
Do you not have a brain?

If anything, it's middle-aged and older people whose reward circuits got hacked, not the young ones.
That's why games aimed at that crowd barely sell.

Re: #34
How long are you gonna keep riding that "fastest-selling" high?
It's already down to weekly sales of 20,000, maybe 30,000 tops.

Re: #38
If you won't accept anything short of "fastest = best,"
does that mean the DS — which shipped fewer units domestically than the Switch — was never a boom either?
Nintendo Domestic Hardware Shipments (as of end of June 2026)
38.55M — Switch
32.99M — DS
32.47M — Game Boy
25.26M — 3DS
19.15M — Famicom
17.17M — Super Famicom
16.96M — Game Boy Advance
12.75M — Wii
6.70M — Switch 2
5.54M — N64
4.04M — GameCube
3.34M — Wii U

By the way, I don't think this year's gonna be it.
It's rough when a remake is your headline title.
Longer game dev cycles are just unavoidable at this point.
Right now's the time to grit your teeth and wait.

Re: #59
I say this every time, but why does everyone act like the sequel to Switch Sports — which sold over 3 million domestically and tens of millions worldwide — doesn't even exist? lol

In the end Nintendo's basically turned into a Western-style game publisher.
Bet it'd be different if Iwata ("Iwacchi," an affectionate nickname for former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata) were still around.

Re: #61
Oh, they did that on the Switch too?
Didn't know, wasn't interested.
Well, hopefully that helps Switch 2 sales bounce back then.
Personally I don't think that alone will cut it though.

The PS doesn't even sell without lineups like this.
Even at rock-bottom prices, moving barely four-digit numbers over and over is just embarrassing.

Re: #65
Comparing to PS sales in Japan is lame.
What's the point of flexing on something that's already washed up ("owakon" = dead/finished content)?

Oh, so you're admitting it's washed-up garbage now?
Then you should understand why games like this need to keep coming out.

Guess that's the console war officially over then.

Software matters more than hardware.
It looks like, beyond the Switch, nothing but Nintendo's established evergreen titles is going to sell.
And even Nintendo itself seems to be struggling to create new evergreen hits.
