  • Fed Chair Warsh: If Inflation Persists, ‘There’s Work to Be Done’ — Yen Slides Past 160

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, speaking at Jackson Hole, hinted at further action if inflation stays elevated. The remarks accelerated yen selling in New York trading on the 28th, pushing the dollar past ¥160 for the first time since the joint Japan-US intervention in late July. On 5ch, users clashed over whether the Bank of Japan should follow with a rate hike of its own, while others countered that a hike is unrealistic given the burden of interest payments on government debt. Opinions were also split on whether the weak yen benefits export industries or simply squeezes households through higher prices — reviving the broader debate over the monetary easing pursued since Abenomics.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said in a speech on the 28th that if inflation remains elevated, “there is work to be done,” leaving the door open to further interest rate hikes without specifying a direction.

Following Warsh’s remarks, the yen weakened further against the dollar in New York foreign exchange trading on the 28th, briefly touching ¥160 to the dollar for the first time since the joint Japan-US intervention at the end of July. The rate had been hovering around ¥159.50 before the speech, but growing expectations that the Fed will hike rates soon fueled speculation of a widening Japan-US interest rate gap, triggering yen selling and dollar buying.

Warsh delivered the speech at the annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Past Fed chairs have used this venue to signal the future direction of monetary policy, so market watchers were paying close attention.

I think people are way too quick to treat the weak yen as evil.
Back under the DPJ government, the strong yen crushed domestic industry, and manufacturing is still weak because of it.
With the weak yen now helping export industries like autos grow, the future actually looks a lot brighter.

I've lost count of how many rounds of this we've had, but just like China, weakening your own currency is a beggar-thy-neighbor move that's actually a net plus for the country doing it. "The US won't allow it" is just a bunch of interest groups dressing up their objections in polite language.

It's a problem that you don't get that if export industries were actually growing, the yen wouldn't be this weak in the first place lol. Just reading the comments on Yahoo News shows how off-base the average Japanese person's economic thinking is. Maybe economic education needs a bit of a boost.

Right now in the US, prices have risen so much that the public mood has moved past politics entirely.
Average household income has topped $100,000 (about ¥16 million).
Service-industry workers earning close to minimum wage are making around $17/hour (about ¥2,700).
The old middle class can't cover rent and fixed costs anymore, and it's gotten to the point where people are moving out to the countryside or emigrating to Mexico.

You can't raise interest rates without first getting the primary balance into surplus.
And that requires a consumption tax hike.

Running monetary easing and low rates while also raising taxes seems like it works against itself, I think. Doing two completely opposite economic policies at the same time is like flooring the gas while also slamming the brake — I honestly don't get pursuing such contradictory policies at once. Just my personal take though.

From the 1997 consumption tax hike all the way to the start of Abenomics in 2013, national tax revenue never once increased. Getting the primary balance into surplus through tax hikes is nonsense.
    168AnonymousAug 29, 2026 09:24
    Re: #132
A tax hike won't do anything about the current price increases. The reason is that today's inflation isn't demand outstripping supply — it's the interest rate gap between Japan and the US weakening the yen. If you don't fix the actual cause — the weak yen — and just raise taxes to suppress demand, all that does is make things sell less; the yen stays weak regardless. Since Japan imports its resources and raw materials, as long as the yen stays weak, prices stay high. Raising taxes to curb demand while costs are already inflated by the weak yen would just leave people struggling to get by. Just my personal take though.

Flip it around — the yen was overvalued for way too long after the bubble era. Its "true" level is probably more like where it was around 1970. The chart even looks like a head-and-shoulders pattern (a technical chart formation) heading into a crash.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Fed chair’s remarks came at the annual Jackson Hole conference, a venue long associated with signaling the future direction of monetary policy. What drew particular attention this time was that the yen fell to the ¥160 level for the first time since the joint Japan-US intervention at the end of July — a threshold the market strongly associates with past government/BOJ intervention. On the thread, opinions clashed between those calling for the BOJ to follow with a rate hike of its own and those arguing a hike is untenable given the burden of interest payments on government bonds and the state of the fiscal balance. Views were also split over whether the weak yen is a net positive — some see it as a tailwind for export industries, others see rising import costs squeezing household budgets. Whether the monetary easing since Abenomics is the main driver of the weak yen was also debated, though it’s easy to overlook that the picture is more complex than a simple good-vs-bad framing — compounding factors like the resource price spikes since 2022, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the widening Japan-US rate gap from the Fed’s rapid hikes all play a role.

Section chief → Usually seems half-asleep on the job. Reveals hidden competence the moment something actually goes wrong.

Veteran senior → Knows the section chief's true nature. Competent, and when "the chick" (マンコ, crude 5ch slang used dismissively for a female coworker) screws up, doesn't even scold her — just says "Forget that, let's fix the problem first."

Senior coworker → When the chick's mistake happens, plays the reassuring smile-and-pat-on-the-shoulder role: "Just leave it to the veteran, like he said."

Colleague → Insanely competent. Blunt and unfriendly. Has the section chief's total trust. Thinks the exact opposite of the chick — tsundere type. Stylish, "this is good enough as it is" attitude. Regular at the bar. Plays the Kimutaku (heartthrob actor Takuya Kimura) role.

    Background and Key Points

This review follows a familiar pattern seen on job-change and employment review sites: complaints about the gap between how imposing a company’s name sounds and what the actual workplace is like. Heavy-industry manufacturers like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are primarily in the business of building factories and plants, so many such companies have a shop-floor culture that’s a world away from the glass-walled high-rise offices seen in TV dramas. What really got the thread going wasn’t so much the rights or wrongs of the review itself, but how strikingly uniform people’s mental image of a “stylish office” turned out to be, shaped heavily by generation and media exposure — the trend of posters generating their own “ideal office” images with AI became the symbol of that. At the same time, actual photos of the real Marunouchi headquarters were also posted, and it’s worth adding, since it doesn’t come through from the replies alone, that the impression a workplace gives can vary enormously depending on the department and location an employee is assigned to. It should also be noted that some reactions to the review included posts generalizing and disparaging “women’s advancement in the workforce” — since treating one poster’s personal experience as representative of women as a whole is an unfounded generalization, those replies have been excluded from this article.

  • Showa-era ‘Supercar Bikes’ Getting an Electric Reboot — 5ch: ‘Showa Kids Are Losing Their Minds’

It has come to light that development is underway to revive the “supercar bicycles” that emerged during the late-1970s supercar boom — Bridgestone’s “Monte Carlo” chief among them — using modern technology such as electric pop-up headlights, a 12-speed electronic shifter, and LED turn signals. The project is being led by the head of the development company, who says he owned a Monte Carlo back in the day. The plan reportedly includes clearing the legal requirements for road use while also adding smartphone connectivity. On 5ch, some posters were thrilled (“Kids who grew up in the Showa era are over the moon”), while plenty of others were more skeptical (“Who’s actually going to buy this now?”), and the thread lit up with nostalgic talk about the old brands and bike designs.

The shift lever sits on the frame’s top tube, and sliding it forward or backward triggers an electronic gear change. An LED above the lever shows the current gear. There are 12 speeds in total. While modern sport bikes typically get their gear count from “6 rear sprockets × 2 front chainrings,” this model sticks with the original’s single-lever design, achieving its 12 speeds with 12 sprockets on the rear wheel alone.

The project is being produced by the company’s president, Norimitsu Nakai. Nakai owned a Bridgestone-made “Monte Carlo” supercar bike back in the day, and he reportedly launched this project to bring that memory back to life.

Every feature and spec found on the original supercar bikes is being updated with modern technology, and development is proceeding toward a commercial product that also clears the legal requirements for use on public roads. It’s also set to include modern touches like smartphone connectivity for checking and adjusting settings.

Strip off the body panels and you can see the Countach and the 365 GT4 BB are completely different animals.
The Countach has this insanely complex tubular space frame that makes you wonder if it was really mass-produced, while the BB's frame looks like something a grade-schooler welded together.
Hard to say whether to praise that as Fiat-style pragmatic simplicity or not.

These days, this is probably what a 'supercar bike' looks like

    Background and Talking Points

Supercar bicycles were a genre of kids’ bikes that emerged in the late 1970s, riding the wave of the supercar boom sparked by movies and manga. They were known for semi-drop handlebars, gear shift levers, and round headlights reminiscent of the Lamborghini Countach or Ferrari 365 GT4 BB. Bridgestone’s “Monte Carlo” was one of the defining models of the genre, and this new project traces back to the developer’s own memories of owning one.

Opinions in the thread mostly split over one question: who’s actually going to buy this? The generation that once dreamed of these bikes is now around 50 years old, and many pointed out the gap between nostalgia and practicality. At the same time, features like the motorized headlight and smartphone integration were welcomed by some as a genuine attempt to reproduce the era’s gimmicks within modern legal requirements. It’s also worth noting that adding turn signals to bicycles ties into ongoing debates about safety standards for e-assist bikes and mopeds, so there’s more going on here than pure nostalgia.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Breaking News Plus) thread “Electric pop-up lights, 12-speed shifting, LED turn signals… Updating the dream supercar bike with modern technology, now in development.”

  • 5ch Split Over Rumors That Only Japan’s PS5 Version Will Be Censored

Rumors that the Japanese PS5 version of GTA6 will be a censored release have sparked discussion on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board. It started with a jab: “Only Japanese PS5 owners are stuck getting the censored version, yet PS5 users themselves don’t seem to care.” Some countered that GTA5 already had content differences between PS5, Xbox, and PC, and that regions beyond Japan — like the Middle East and India — have their own restrictions too. In practice, though, the thread quickly drifted away from the censorship issue itself and into the usual PS5-vs-Xbox sales-numbers slap fight.

    1AnonymousAug 29, 2026 11:01
Isn't this way more serious than the frame rate debate?
GTA's whole appeal is that anything goes — a censored version kind of defeats the point, doesn't it?
And everyone's just ignoring this and screaming about FPS instead.
    4AnonymousAug 29, 2026 11:07
    It's not just Japan.
The Middle East often gets restrictions similar to Japan's, so the Japanese and Middle Eastern versions frequently end up bundled together.
GTA doesn't really lean on gore, so Germany probably won't cut much.
But if there's LGBTQ content, India and Pakistan might censor it.

For PS, Japan doesn't even get its own server — you get routed to the Asia server.
Even if you managed to boot the North American version, you'd get sent to the US server, and you probably can't even log into the account in the first place.

    PS's "exclusive" is RTX 2060-tier 1440p at a variable 30fps, right? lol
Spec-wise, Xbox actually looks capable of a locked 30fps.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Content restrictions on Japanese game releases are usually decided by each publisher’s own judgment, based on CERO’s ratings guidelines as well as an eye toward alignment with overseas rating bodies — GTA5 itself had certain scenes adjusted only in the Japanese version. This thread, too, started from unconfirmed information that “only the PS5 version will be censored”; it’s worth noting that neither Sony Interactive Entertainment nor developer Rockstar has made any official announcement about specific content restrictions. Posters also raised technical questions — like whether region-locked accounts can boot overseas-region discs, and which region’s data a PS Store download code actually pulls — but these remain speculation, and the real behavior will have to wait for an official statement. Where opinions diverged was over how many people actually care whether censorship happens at all; in practice, the thread drifted away from the censorship question itself and into the usual PS5-vs-Xbox sales comparisons and console-war sniping.

  • “Nobody Came This Summer Either”: 72-Year-Old Stopped Helping Her Grandchild Financially — And Family Visits Stopped Too

“Starting this year, I’m not giving them any more.” A 72-year-old woman living on a monthly pension of ¥160,000 cut off financial support to her grandchild’s family — and the family’s once-annual invitation to a summer vacation together abruptly stopped coming. The episode, reported by GENTOSHA GOLD ONLINE, became a hot topic on 5ch. Some readers reacted coldly to a family that only visits when money is involved, asking “Weren’t they just mooching off her?” Meanwhile, opinions split over whether ¥160,000 a month is a lot or a little — some said “that’s normal for a civil servant,” others “reasonable once you add in a survivor’s pension” — sparking a flood of comments about the nuclear family trend and the distance in modern parent-child relationships.

“Starting this year, I’m not giving them any more” — why she stopped helping her grandchild

“Should we all go somewhere together again this summer?”

When her eldest daughter Mayu (pseudonym, 45) asked her that, her mother Etsuko (pseudonym, 72) hesitated for a moment before answering.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of first-person “¥X a month, Y-year-old woman” human-interest story is regularly published by financial outlets like GENTOSHA GOLD ONLINE to draw out readers’ empathy or anxiety, and commenters on the thread noted it might be a “made-up composition.” A pension of ¥160,000 a month is a figure that a single person’s National Pension alone (topping out around ¥60,000-something a month even at the full rate) can’t reach on its own — it’s typically only achieved by combining it with Employees’ Pension Insurance or a survivor’s pension, so readers unfamiliar with Japan’s public pension system tend to split on whether the number sounds like “a lot” or “a little.” While the thread leaned critical of a family whose visits seemed to hinge on financial support, opinions were divided over who was really at fault — the ones asking for help or the one giving it — leaving the emotional distance between parents and children as a point with no easy right or wrong answer.

The thread noted that only three titles in history have ever topped 2 million concurrent Steam players — PUBG, Black Myth: Wukong, and Palworld — and that even a 30% storewide sale hasn’t stopped the slide. That initial 2.1 million concurrent players was pretty fishy to begin with
Looking at other games, basically nothing hits over 2 million right at launch
And at that point it hadn't even been sued yet — it was, for better or worse, 'just another clone game.' The fact that something like that suddenly put up numbers like this is weird

The reason those two don't get as much noise is probably that their real rival is Palworld, not Pokémon
Over there, people were making a huge fuss calling it a ripoff, to the point Palworld had to put out an official statement

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth remembering that Steam’s concurrent player count is just a rough platform-level gauge, separate from official metrics like total sales. Palworld has been a subject of debate over its similarity to Pokémon ever since launch, but the Metacritic user score of 7.3 cited in the thread isn’t actually a low number — so a decline in concurrent players doesn’t necessarily mean the game itself is being rated poorly. It’s also worth noting that major titles not distributed via Steam, such as Fortnite, aren’t part of this concurrent-player comparison, which limits how meaningful a simple cross-platform comparison can be. What split opinion in the thread was purely the interpretation behind the decline — no objective supporting data, like sales figures, was actually presented.

    Background and Key Points

“Bus tours” are day-trip or overnight excursions that Hello! Project groups regularly hold for fans, and since sightseeing, meals, and group-specific activities (in this thread, apparently an obstacle course race and something resembling a campfire event) all get packed into a single day, it isn’t unusual for meal times to be set unusually early in the morning or evening. The thread’s “buzz” was less about complaints and more about surprise at just how early the 4:15 PM dinner start was — there wasn’t much outright criticism of the tour itself. One easy point of confusion: the photos in the replies, including those from “Takao Yamakoshi” and the shots of seafood rice bowls and konjac rice, aren’t official announcements from the tour organizers — they’re posts from individual fans on X (formerly Twitter) that thread users reposted. Some replies also disagree over whether the people pictured are from Angerme or Tsubaki Factory, suggesting even the posters themselves weren’t entirely sure what was happening on site.

  • Google Japan Engineer Fired for ‘Markedly Poor Performance’ One Month After a Glowing Review

A software engineer who had worked at Google’s Japan subsidiary for over a decade, steadily climbing the ranks along the way, was fired the month after receiving a high performance rating — abruptly judged to have ‘markedly poor work conduct.’ Their annual salary was 14.7 million yen. The stated deciding factor was failure to meet an abstractly worded goal of ‘demonstrating L5-level leadership,’ set against the backdrop of the Performance Improvement Program (PIP) that has spread among foreign-affiliated companies. On 5ch, some argued this is simply to be expected at meritocratic foreign firms, while others pointed out that the company would be at a disadvantage in a wrongful-dismissal lawsuit precisely because of the high salary involved — sparking a broader debate over the merits of Japan’s dismissal regulations.

Promoted again and again over more than ten years, climbing steadily up the ranks — until one day, a software engineer at Google’s Japan subsidiary (Google Japan G.K.) was suddenly pushed out of their job, deemed to have ‘markedly poor’ work conduct.

The deciding factor in the dismissal was the ‘unmet’ status of a ‘goal’ set in abstract terms: ‘should demonstrate leadership at the L5 level.’ Their annual salary was 14.7 million yen. In the performance review just before the dismissal, they had been rated highly, receiving a ‘Significant Impact (S)’ rating.

Behind it all was the ‘PIP’ (Performance Improvement Program), a system increasingly adopted at foreign-affiliated companies and elsewhere.

Being easy to fire also means it's easy to quit yourself
A company that can fire easily also hires mid-career easily
In a country like Japan where getting fired ruins your life,
it's hell — you have to grit your teeth and keep working at a company that doesn't suit you forever, even if you're depressed
Whereas in the West, you can easily leave a company that doesn't fit

Even foreign companies have to comply with Japanese law
It's just that, being foreign-affiliated, firings are still common, and employees take the job knowing that going in

Background and Key Points of the Debate

PIP (Performance Improvement Program) is a system adopted mainly by foreign-affiliated companies, known as a mechanism that imposes improvement goals on low-rated employees and leads to dismissal or a recommendation to resign if those goals aren’t met. This case drew attention because the employee’s most recent rating before dismissal had been high — a ‘Significant Impact (S)’ — and because failure to meet an abstract goal of ‘demonstrating L5-level leadership’ was used as the grounds for firing them. In the thread, opinions split between those who saw this as simply expected at meritocratic foreign firms, and those who argued that since working in Japan means the dismissal regulations under the Labor Contract Act apply, the company ends up more disadvantaged in a lawsuit the higher the employee’s salary is. That said, even when a court does rule a dismissal invalid, it’s not unusual for the employee to return to the workplace only to keep receiving low ratings and see their salary drop anyway — a nuance that tended to get overlooked in the replies, since winning the case doesn’t necessarily mean getting one’s treatment restored.

  • Is the Only Point of Conversation to ‘Get Closer’ to Someone? 5ch Debate Goes in Circles

“Isn’t the only point of talking to someone to become closer with them?” A question posted to 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board sparked a long back-and-forth. The thread’s original poster repeated the claim that “even if there are benefits, that’s all conversation really amounts to,” while other posters pushed back with arguments like “you can learn things you didn’t know” and “you can gain insights.” The discussion gradually shifted into a semantic battle over the difference between “meaningless” and “not feeling the need for it,” and the two sides never reached common ground.

In other words, whenever something's inconvenient for you, you interpret it as the other person lacking intelligence to justify yourself. That's how you probably operate in real life too — you cope with the fact that other people aren't interested in you by chalking it up to their poor reading comprehension, putting others down to prop yourself up.

Even going back through the log, you're dodging every single point people actually want answered lol. This thread's just here to rub people the wrong way, isn't it?

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This thread is a textbook example of how the kind of talking-past-each-other over definitions that’s common on anonymous forums can escalate. The original poster never budged from the premise that “conversation has no meaning beyond getting closer to someone,” while those pushing back treated “meaning,” “necessity,” and “value” as separate concepts — and this mismatch in terminology is a big part of why the discussion never quite connected. Because text-only exchanges don’t convey tone of voice or facial expression, minor nitpicks over wording are easily read as personal attacks, and as the thread went on, the focus shifted away from the actual content toward repeatedly questioning whether the other side had correctly understood one’s argument. There’s no clear right answer to a philosophical question like this one, and the two sides never closed the gap between their positions.

  • Sandwichman’s Mikio Date Hospitalized After Stroke — Risk Factors Include High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Smoking, and Obesity

Mikio Date (51), one half of the comedy duo Sandwichman, has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for a stroke, his talent agency announced on its official website on August 28. The diagnosis came after he complained of feeling unwell and underwent tests; thanks to swift action from medical staff, his condition didn’t become serious. On the forum, discussion centered on the risk factors named in the announcement — high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity — with many pointing to his long history as a heavy smoker and others urging better exercise and diet. Still, some argued it ultimately comes down to “luck and genetics,” splitting opinion on how much of health is really within one’s own control.

What is the stroke Sandwichman’s Mikio Date suffered from… risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity

Sandwichman’s Mikio Date (51) has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for a stroke, according to an announcement on the official website on the 28th. He will reportedly take time off to focus fully on treatment for now.

The announcement was addressed “To our fans and everyone involved,” and stated: “Mikio Date of Sandwichman, who belongs to our agency, recently complained of feeling unwell, underwent tests at a hospital, and was diagnosed with a stroke.” It went on to explain the current situation: “Thanks to the swift response of the medical staff, fortunately it did not become serious, and he is currently receiving inpatient treatment.” He will focus on treatment and rest for the time being.

'Reading Diet,' by Genichiro Takahashi, Part 1

    https://www.php.co.jp/atch_books_ogp.php?9784569905372.jpg

The health book in question is 'The Art of Living Long' (lit. 'The Method Against Illness: The Power of Eating Very Little') by Luigi Cornaro (translated and annotated by Genki Nakakura, PHP Institute).

The author of this book is Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman from Renaissance Italy.
For reference, Cornaro was born in 1464 and died in 1566 — meaning he lived to the age of 102.
Coming from someone who lived that long, the health advice carries maximum credibility.

Being a nobleman, Cornaro spent his younger years indulging in excessive eating and drinking.
As a result, his body fell apart, and by his 40s he was hovering near death.

His doctors told him he had little time left to live as he was, and that his only hope of survival was to drastically cut back on what he ate.
Cornaro did exactly as told — and remarkably, he recovered his health and went on to live past the age of 100.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and blood flow to the brain stops. The risk factors named in the official announcement — high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity — are all medically recognized as major contributors to arteriosclerosis. On the thread, many commenters focused on smoking as the likely primary cause, but it’s worth noting that this reflects speculation among 5ch users rather than any actual information about Date’s smoking habits — the official announcement didn’t specify this. On the topic of exercise, the discussion pushed back against the simple idea that “walking makes you healthy”: some pointed out that walking alone does little for weight loss if your diet doesn’t change, while others noted cases of knee and heel injuries from excessive walking, raising the point that both exercise and diet need to be addressed together. A trivia comment claiming that “the average life expectancy in the frugal-eating Edo period was only in the 30s-40s” also came up, but this is a commonly misread figure — it’s heavily skewed downward by high infant mortality, and needs to be considered separately from actual adult lifespans at the time.
