  • 24 Hour Television’s Family Drama Flashback Scene — 5ch: ‘This Group Goes Viral 13 Years Later’

During Nippon TV’s ’24 Hour Television 49: My Family Story — Who Do You Think Of?’ broadcast on the night of August 29, 2026, a flashback drama scene evoking Morning Musume aired, and viewers on the Hello! Project board live-commented in real time. Since the era depicted in the drama appeared to be around 2013, fans traded period-accuracy debates like whether smartphones and LINE existed back then, and some pointed out that the number ‘1029’ shown in the scene could be read as Tsunku♂’s birthday. Scenes recreating the group’s costumes and jacket photos from that era drew a wave of nostalgic comments from longtime fans.

'24 Hour Television 49' Special Drama 'Happiness Exists'

Has it aired yet, I wonder?

    I can't watch it in real time… 🥲

Think I'll watch the recording instead (smiling)

    Background and Talking Points

The theme of 24 Hour Television 49 was ‘My Family Story — Who Do You Think Of?’, and it appears a family-episode scene evoking Morning Musume’s history was inserted into the drama. Tsunku♂ is known as the group’s creator, and his birthday is said to be October 29. In the thread, some pointed out that the number ‘1029’ shown in the scene could be linked to his birthday, but since the broadcast itself aired on August 29, the number was more likely just an in-drama date display. Opinions were also split over the period details, with some saying ‘smartphones existed by 2013’ and others suggesting ‘this scene is set in 2026’ — confusion that arose easily because the drama shifted back and forth between flashback and present-day segments, making it hard for viewers to tell which scene belonged to which era. Most of the comments were nostalgic reactions to the jacket photos and period costumes, mixed with lighthearted banter about which actors were stand-ins for which members.

  • Giants’ Akahoshi Plunks Morishita Near the Wrist — Tigers Manager Fujikawa Storms Out of the Dugout

During the Hanshin–Giants game at Koshien Stadium on August 29, Giants pitcher Yushi Akahoshi hit Hanshin’s Shota Morishita near the left wrist with a pitch in the 7th inning, sending a stir through the stadium. Hanshin manager Kyuji Fujikawa even came storming out of the dugout. On the Geisokuhaya+ (5ch sports/entertainment news) board, opinions split over whether the pitch was accidental or intentional, with posters citing data showing the Giants lead the Central League this season with 54 hit-by-pitches. Some blamed Morishita for crowding the plate, while others pointed to the Giants’ pitching staff’s control problems, with comparisons drawn to past “batters who never dodge,” like Kazuhiro Kiyohara.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hit-by-pitch controversies have been a recurring theme in the Central League this season. According to figures cited in the thread as of August 28, the Giants lead with 54 hit-by-pitches, followed by the Swallows with 50 and DeNA with 40. Posters noted that a high HBP count isn’t only about a pitcher’s control problems — it can also reflect aggressive inside pitching and batting stances where right-handed hitters step toward first base, making inside pitches harder to dodge, with Kazuhiro Kiyohara cited as an example of a batter who deliberately never got out of the way. On the topic of wrist protection, some pointed out that wristband-style guards were common about 20 years ago, whereas today many players take the plate with guards for the back of the hand but nothing protecting the wrist itself, suggesting changing equipment trends may also play a role. Separately, it’s worth noting that NPB continuously monitors abusive or threatening posts aimed at players and umpires and has stated it will report malicious cases to police or pursue legal action — a reminder that heated commentary carries real legal risk, regardless of how the hit-by-pitch itself is judged.

  • Japan Women’s Volleyball Falls 1-3 to Thailand, Los Angeles Olympic Berth Put on Hold — 5ch: ‘Is There Any Other Sport Where We Lose to Thailand?’

On August 29, 2026, in the women’s volleyball Asian Championship semifinal held in Tianjin, China, Japan lost 1-3 to defending champion Thailand. The result means Japan’s outright qualification for the Los Angeles Olympics has been put on hold, and players including Seki and Wada were reportedly in tears. On 5ch, the loss drew comments pointing to a roster problem — Japan was forced to lean on inexperienced younger players — while others pushed back, arguing Wada’s poor showing wasn’t really about her own form but about Thailand’s scouting and a mismatch with the starting setter. Opinions were also split over how expectations were hyped up before the tournament and how the TV broadcast handled its presentation.

    Background and Talking Points

As the phrase “put on hold” suggests, this semifinal loss doesn’t mean Japan’s Olympic spot is gone entirely — it’s an easy point to misread. What actually happened is that the path to qualifying outright through this tournament has gotten more distant. On the thread, opinions on the cause of the loss were split: some framed the poor form of experienced players like Seki and Wada as an individual issue, while others pointed to a roster problem — over-reliance on younger players like Akimoto and Shigihara. On Wada’s slump specifically, a counter-argument emerged citing “Thailand’s scouting and a mismatch with the starting setter,” suggesting the situation can’t simply be chalked up to an off day. There was also confusion in the thread over live score discrepancies for the concurrent China vs. Iran match, with different score-tracking sites disagreeing with each other. And as the article notes, Thailand is the defending champion — worth keeping in mind, since this wasn’t a simple story of a “shocking upset loss to a weaker opponent.”

  • Kioxia to Build New ¥1.8 Trillion Plant in Kitakami, Iwate — 5ch: ‘Heading for an Elpida Repeat?’

Semiconductor giant Kioxia has announced it will build a new “Third Fabrication Building” at its plant in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, in response to surging AI-driven demand. The investment totals roughly ¥1.8 trillion, marking an expansion following the Second Fabrication Building that came online in September 2025, with operations targeted to begin sometime in fiscal 2029. On 5ch’s News Flash+ board, opinions were split: some worried this could be “a repeat of Elpida,” the memory maker that collapsed in 2012, while others argued AI demand will keep growing for years to come — and still others warned of the risk that supply and demand could flip into oversupply.

Semiconductor giant Kioxia revealed it will build a new “Third Fabrication Building” at its plant in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture, to meet growing demand driven by the spread of AI. The company says it will invest ¥1.8 trillion.

Kioxia Holdings President Hiroo Ota met with Prime Minister Takaichi on August 27 and revealed the plan to build a new Third Fabrication Building at the company’s plant in Kitakami.

It will be built south of the Second Fabrication Building, which came online in September 2025. The investment is expected to total about ¥1.8 trillion, with operations targeted to start sometime during fiscal 2029.

Background and Key Points of This Story

This investment announcement came right after a meeting with Prime Minister Takaichi, aligning with the government’s push to boost semiconductor production for economic security reasons. The central question is whether demand can be sustained — some market research firms have pegged the memory supply-demand turning point at around late 2026, a figure that came up in the thread as well. There was also discussion of Japan’s semiconductor history, including its retreat from DRAM after holding the bulk of the global market in the 1980s, though claims about technology leaks remain disputed even among industry insiders and shouldn’t be read as settled fact. As for securing high-skilled talent around Kitakami, the plant itself has a solid operating track record, but the scarcity of universities and other educational institutions in the area does read as a genuine ongoing challenge based on the source material.

The quizmaster, a regular posting under the fixed handle “Rx,” ran a buzzer-style quiz about TV shows and celebrities starting at 9:24 PM and running past midnight. That same night, the 24-Hour Television telethon was airing, and the thread title notes this was staged as counter-programming against it. Scores were tallied under a three-chance system (1st place: 3pts, 2nd: 2pts, 3rd: 1pt), with regulars trading banter and reminiscing about the livelier VIP board of years past.

    Background and Talking Points

“TV Grand Prix” is a long-running buzzer-quiz tradition on 5ch’s VIP board, hosted periodically by a regular quizmaster under a fixed handle — this installment marks its 10th anniversary. The thread’s title comes from the fact that it ran on a Saturday night overlapping with the 24-Hour Television broadcast, staged as counter-programming against it. The quizmaster also revealed that a weather-map question had been self-written with help from AI, hinting at how the event’s production has evolved over the past decade. At the same time, comments like “these days even the side-splitting threads don’t properly take off anymore” reflect a certain nostalgia among participants for a livelier VIP board of the past. There was also an exchange suggesting a regular participant, “◆MEGANEw1Wc,” was going for a first win in 8 years but fell short — a moment that captures the atmosphere of this long-running regular community. • Juice=Juice Set to Appear on NHK’s Venue101 (9/5), Will Perform ‘Kurakura☆Climax’

It’s been revealed that Juice=Juice will appear on NHK’s Venue101, airing September 5, where they’ll perform “Kurakura☆Climax.” The thread noted that Angerme is also set to appear on a separate program that same day, and users listed the group’s recent run of TV appearances — CDTV, Utacon, the Hamada Kayo Festival, and more — expressing excitement over their rising media exposure. At the same time, some worried about tickets becoming harder to get, while others speculated that a group’s ease of landing music-show slots might depend on which label it’s signed to — adding a note of concern to the group’s growing popularity.

    Background and Talking Points

As commenters in the thread noted, “Kurakura☆Climax” is an EP track, not a single’s title song. Several credited its warm reception to composer/arranger Kohmi Hirose, with some suggesting that had it been released as a single instead, it might have lost the momentum of the group’s previous release and underperformed. On the subject of TV appearances, some posters speculated that groups affiliated with King Records versus those under Sony may have different levels of access to music shows — but this remains speculation about label clout rather than a confirmed fact. Likewise, the comment declaring “Kōhaku is a lock” reflects wishful thinking, not an official announcement. Whether NHK’s “Nodo Jiman” still features a live band was also left unresolved in the thread and should be treated as unverified.

This article was compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Juice=Juice to Appear on NHK’s Venue101 Airing 9/5, Will Perform “Kurakura☆Climax”.”

  • Is ‘Effort Beats Talent’ a Dead Phrase Now? 5ch: ‘If You’re a Genius, Putting in Effort Is Easy’

A thread on 5ch debated whether the old belief that “effort surpasses talent” has faded from view. Comments piled up like “talented people work hard too, so in the end it still comes down to talent” and “if you’re a genius, putting in effort is easy — it’s way more impressive when someone with no talent works hard,” and the discussion spread into how luck and environment factor in alongside talent and effort. Posters brought up plenty of concrete examples — like a 10-year-old overtaking a 20-year veteran at the Puyo Puyo world championship in just a month, or the theory that sprint speed comes down to leg length multiplied by turnover rate — making it a lively topic that couldn’t be settled with simple willpower platitudes.

    Re: #375
Both guys mentioned as examples had fathers who were hardcore hard workers, while the sons weren't so much — doesn't that actually highlight how important effort is?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The phrase “effort surpasses talent” is said to trace back to the Showa-era spirit-sports-manga mindset, and in recent years terms like “parent gacha” — which frame one’s origins and innate qualities as products of luck — have spread, increasingly casting the two ideas as opposites. What split opinion in the thread was whether effort should be seen as “a necessary condition for great achievement” or as “the condition that determines the outcome.” Some argued that since the closer you get to the top the harder the talented ones are also working, effort alone can rarely close the gap; others pointed out that whether talent blossoms at all is itself shaped by environment and luck. It’s worth noting the thread offered no concrete data on the correlation between effort and results — this was a discussion built purely on individual impressions and anecdotes.

  • Complaints Mount Over ‘Imperial Palace Jogging,’ Ward Responds — 5ch: ‘It’s a Hookup Spot, After All’

The area around the Imperial Palace in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward has long been famous as a hotspot for “Imperial Palace jogging,” but in recent years, friction between runners and pedestrians sharing the sidewalks has become increasingly noticeable. In an interview with Shueisha Online, a ward official acknowledged receiving requests to improve the walking environment. On a 5ch thread, alongside complaints about runners treating the narrow sidewalk like their own private track, several commenters pointed out that Imperial Palace jogging has somehow turned into a spot for meeting people and hunting for marriage partners, sparking a debate over whether restrictions are needed.

Imperial Palace jogging — wait, you mean running on that gravel path?
    46AnonymousAug 30, 2026 08:09
The whole thing started because bureaucrats and office workers in the area, newly conscious about health, copied officials jogging on the National Mall in Washington D.C.

Then, as the media picked it up during the health boom — running stories about bathhouses turning into makeshift changing-room bases and so on — it spread, and the place eventually turned into a "pilgrimage site" people would travel from far away just to run at.

To begin with, the National Mall is basically a park — the paths are wide, and there's plenty of room for people to take turns running with zero problems.

But over here, it's a narrow sidewalk. If you want to do that, go run in Yoyogi Park or something.

It used to just be a jogging/walking route for local residents, but once Imperial Palace jogging got popular on Instagram and social media, and "running stations" aimed at long-distance commuting runners started popping up everywhere, the number of people trekking all the way to the Imperial Palace just to run exploded.

    https://kokyorunstyle.com/runners-station/takebashi-kanda/
Around the Takebashi, Jimbocho, and Kanda areas, there are lots of facilities called "running stations" (a.k.a. "run-sta") equipped with lockers and showers.

If you use a running station, you can rent running shoes and running wear as well as change and shower there, so you can enjoy running casually without carrying anything.

    Re: #332
Most pedestrians have it drilled into them that walking on the left is the default, so you'd get pushback like "why do we have to walk on the right?" Hard to pull off. If anything, from just walking around day to day, I can't help but think there are plenty of people who genuinely (and wrongly) believe pedestrians are legally required to walk on the left under the traffic laws.

Well, Japan really has tied itself up in regulations and rules. Since it's all tightening and no loosening, of course society ends up feeling suffocating. This is a society built by not-very-bright people. The 70s-80s were probably Japan's peak — rules and regulations were looser, and it was a genuinely free society.

That's because in the Showa era, citizens still had morals. In the Heisei era, morals collapsed and "if it's not banned, anything goes" became the norm. You're right that just piling on rules without rebuilding morals is a dumb approach.

The economy was good, there was hope, and people had room in their hearts — it was a society where giving way to others actually paid off. Now it's a society where giving way just makes you the loser. Morals are a fragile, vague thing — once someone starts breaking them, they collapse all at once.

Since running fast burns glycogen rather than body fat, if the goal for a fat person is to lose weight, running slower actually matches that goal better and is easier on the body — yet you see fat people huffing and puffing in the glycogen-burning zone, running hard, and losing out on the actual goal.

Background and key points of this topic

The roughly 5km loop around the Imperial Palace has no traffic lights and little elevation change, which is why it has been a go-to running course in central Tokyo ever since the jogging boom of the 2000s. Around Takebashi and Kanda, more and more “running stations” — changing facilities with lockers and showers — have opened, and sidewalks that used to be a simple walking route for local residents have turned into a destination for runners commuting in from far away, which is the backdrop to the current friction. Opinion on the thread split over where to place the blame: some pointed to the manners of runners effectively monopolizing the narrow sidewalk, while others argued the sidewalk itself simply isn’t built for runners and pedestrians to share. Alongside calls for a left/right-side rule or for steering runners toward alternative courses like Yoyogi Park, it’s worth noting that the claim that Imperial Palace jogging effectively functions as a matchmaking spot adds a dimension to this beyond a simple nuisance debate.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Express+) thread “〈Imperial Palace Jogging — Time to Ban It?〉 ‘Get out of the way,’ ‘You’re in the way’ — What we found after confronting Chiyoda Ward directly: the real complaints, and a surprising take on it as a ‘matchmaking spot’.”

  • Not Just Bic Camera—TSUTAYA Also Launches PS4/PS5 Clearance Sale With New Copies Up to 80% Off

Following Bic Camera, reports on 5ch say TSUTAYA has also kicked off steep discounts on PS4/PS5 software. According to a poster who visited a store in person, new copies aren’t just 80% off — some are down to 100, 300, or 500 yen, with a sign on the shelf reading “Clearance sale due to trading card corner expansion/renewal.” The thread split between those who see this as a de facto sign of Sony pulling back from physical PlayStation sales, and those who dismiss it as simple shelf reorganization to make room for trading cards — the debate spilled over into discussion of Sony’s push toward download-code-only sales.

    Whatever doesn't sell will just keep sliding down over time — 20% off → 50% off, 50% off → 80% off, 80% off → 500 yen

Sony doesn't actually wholesale download codes to retailers though, so there's nothing to sell
    It's PS Store exclusive
Third parties would have to put out their own boxed releases with paper codes inside themselves
In practice, PS's shelf space disappears from retail stores entirely

Chains like TSUTAYA don't get to design their shelves based on individual staff preference — they move on orders from head office
If head office says "Sony's asked us to push code sales," the stores on the ground will have to build a proper code section, no question

Looked like it had already been picked over, not much decent left…
But for 100 yen a new copy, I figured it's basically just the cost of a case to swap onto my scratched-up used copy and make it look new, so I grabbed a few of what was left

    https://tadaup.jp/8Aimo7M3.jpeg

As far as I remember, what else was left included: Sword Art Online for PS4/PS5 at 500 yen, Exoprimal and Custom Mech Wars for PS5 at 300 yen, a Demon Slayer limited edition at 500 yen, and a soccer game at 300 yen
The sign on the shelf read "Clearance sale due to trading card corner expansion/renewal"

    Background and Points of Contention

Sony has been gradually scaling back physical packaging in favor of download-code sales, and retail shelf layouts are easily affected by that shift. What split the thread was the reason behind the sale: one side saw it as a sign of PlayStation pulling back and losing market share, while the other dismissed it as nothing more than routine shelf reorganization to make room for trading cards. It’s worth noting that TSUTAYA has reportedly been struggling across multiple lines of business — rentals, CDs, DVDs, and books — so this sale may be less a PlayStation-specific issue than part of a broader contraction of the store’s overall business. It’s also worth mentioning, as background that doesn’t come through in the thread replies alone, that Sony once tried and then abandoned the idea of selling download codes through retail before, so it isn’t as simple a decision as it might seem.

  • Taiga Drama ‘Toyotomi Brothers!’ Draws Protest From Taketa City Over Nakagawa Kiyohide Portrayal — 5ch: “Sticking to the Facts Wouldn’t Be Fun”

In NHK’s taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both linked to Sengoku-era warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide, said to have fought bravely and died in battle at Shizugatake — jointly sent NHK a written statement on the 28th protesting that the show’s portrayal is “far removed from historical fact.” The drama reportedly shows Kiyohide attempting to betray Hideyoshi before begging for his life, a major departure from the accepted account that has stirred controversy. On 5ch threads, opinions split over how much dramatic license should be tolerated — defenders saying “it’s fiction, so it can’t be helped,” versus critics arguing “turning a warlord who died in battle into a traitor is going too far.”

    8/29 (Sat) 11:00 — Oita Godo Shimbun

Regarding the portrayal of Sengoku warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide in NHK’s currently airing taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both connected to Kiyohide — jointly sent a written statement to NHK on the 28th, saying the depiction is “far removed from historical fact” and that they “cannot help but feel regret.” While acknowledging that dramatic staging and embellishment fall under “freedom of expression,” the two cities asked that “works based on historical subjects respect accurate historical fact as much as possible.”

Kiyohide was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain, which included present-day Taketa City. He was also castellan of Ibaraki Castle, located in what is now Ibaraki City. In the 1583 Battle of Shizugatake, where Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie, Kiyohide fought on Hideyoshi’s side. He defended the Oiwayama fort but is said to have died in battle after being attacked by Shibata’s general Sakuma Morimasa.

Well, what history tells us is ultimately just what can be read out of surviving records —
we won't know what really happened unless someone invents a time machine,
so I think some degree of dramatic license in a drama is fine.

But when a warlord who, by the accepted account, fought bravely to the end and died in battle
gets turned into someone who begged for his life and betrayed his lord — that's a bit much.
It's only natural for people connected to him to think, "why drag his name through the mud like that?"

It's not even a part that affects the main thrust of the drama's story much,
so it's a mystery why they threw in this unnecessary change.

He was sacrificed to make Maeda's defection look cleaner…

Maybe they wanted to paint Maeda and Nakagawa as the light and dark sides of "betrayal"?

It's probably so that holding the line until Hideyoshi's return could be credited entirely to Hidenaga, and to make Maeda's betrayal look milder by comparison.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Nakagawa Kiyohide is a warlord said to have defended the Oiwayama fort at the Battle of Shizugatake and died in battle after being attacked by Sakuma Morimasa’s forces; he was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain. The drama reportedly depicts a scene in which Kiyohide tries to betray Hideyoshi, then begs for his life before being killed — a major departure from the accepted account of him “dying in battle after fighting bravely.” Opinions split in the thread over how much dramatic license should be allowed in a taiga drama, with the debate centering on whether the change touches the honor of a real historical figure. Past taiga dramas have included plenty of invented material too — such as the circumstances of Azai Nagamasa’s death — but changes that contradict documented achievements tend to draw backlash from those connected to the figure involved. Some also pointed out that records show Kiyohide’s descendants received an increase in fief from Hideyoshi in recognition of his achievements at Shizugatake, casting doubt on the “betrayal” theory.
