  • 1 in 3 Students Use Generative AI for Homework — 5ch Asks: “Is Homework Really That Hard?”

More and more kids are turning to generative AI for their summer homework. According to the Mainichi Shimbun, a survey by marketing support firm Nyle (Tokyo) found that 1 in 3 children said they used generative AI for homework or independent research projects, and among those who did, 85% felt it “helped things move faster.” Over on 5ch’s Newsflash+ board, opinions clashed between users worried that relying on AI erodes thinking skills, and those arguing that using AI will be unavoidable once these kids enter the workforce anyway.

Getting artificial intelligence (AI) to help with summer book reports and math drills — it seems that era is arriving.

On the 5th, marketing support firm Nyle (Tokyo)…

Not to get too serious about it, but only the dumb kids do this — the top students know AI's useless on exams, so they actually study.

Just like the losers here on 5ch, the bottom rung will end up in bottom-rung jobs, same as always.

Wasn't there news about a US university where the exam paper had hidden text (invisible to the human eye) that made AI spit out a glitchy answer if a student scanned it in? Apparently over 90% of students got caught out.

No, idiots really can't use it well.
AI has no actual reasoning — it just pulls the most plausible-sounding answer from its database.
Ask it question A, get an answer, then hit it with counter-question B, and it'll flat-out contradict itself.
You need the knowledge and skill to spot hallucinations.
Though for hard-science topics it's actually pretty reliable, since there's less room for it to be wrong.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The original Mainichi Shimbun report conveys survey results from marketing support firm Nyle, but the specific survey population and sample size aren’t clear from the excerpts shared in the thread. This kind of private-sector survey often relies on self-reported respondents, so it’s worth keeping in mind that figures like “1 in 3” and “85%” don’t necessarily reflect the reality of school education as a whole. The thread split between those who see AI use as “a lazy shortcut that robs kids of thinking skills” and those making the more pragmatic case that “AI use becomes a given once you’re in the workforce, thanks to price competition.” The latter camp also brought up how tough old-school homework like book reports and independent research projects always was, pointing out that regardless of AI, “kids who do the work will do it, and kids who don’t, won’t.” The thread also referenced a case at a U.S. university where instructions invisible to the human eye were hidden in exam sheets to expose students who used AI to answer — sparking discussion not just about how skillfully people use AI, but about the “risk of getting caught.”

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsflash+) thread “👦🤖1 in 3 kids used “generative AI” for summer homework — 85% said it “helped things move faster”.”

  • GTA6 “The Smoothest 30fps of My Life” — Overseas Post Sparks Buzz

A post about GTA6 gameplay footage by an overseas X (formerly Twitter) user — “If this is 30fps, it’s the smoothest 30fps of my life, it’s basically 50fps” — sparked a huge reaction. The post was picked up on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (“geha”) board, and the discussion spread in all directions: from suggestions that the poster “can’t tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps,” to amazement at how smoothly the characters’ hair moves, concerns over frame rate drops on the PS5 version, and console-war bickering over Switch 2 multiplatform titles being locked to 30fps. The thread also touched on reports that a high frame rate mode is being considered for the PS5 Pro.

True to its name, if this is 30fps, aren’t you guys overdoing it? This is the smoothest 30fps of my life. It’s basically at the level of 50fps.

Reminds me of PlayStation fanboys who used to say 24fps is enough for games too, since movies run at 24

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Even before launch, information had circulated through near-official channels (a Digital Foundry preview article) that GTA6 would run at a base 30fps on PS5, with an enhanced mode under consideration for PS5 Pro — and the “high frame rate mode being considered for a post-launch update” mentioned later in the thread fits that same context. Frame rate debates tend to get heated because the raw fps number and the perceived smoothness (how even the frame times are) are two different things, so the impression that “it’s 30fps but looks smooth” isn’t technically a contradiction. At the same time, the thread also drifts into the etymology of the term “10k-buzz” (man-bazu, said to originate from Mobile Suit Gundam Online) and into how Switch 2 multiplatform titles running at 30fps gets recycled as ammunition in the PlayStation-vs-Switch console war. It’s worth keeping in mind that this has more to do with 5ch’s characteristic console-war (“geha”) undercurrent than with the GTA6 topic itself, and runs on a separate track from what the original poster’s tweet was actually about.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry, “geha”) thread “Foreigner: “GTA6’s 30fps is the smoothest 30fps of my life. Basically 50fps level” → Goes viral“.

From there the conversation drifted into ribbing regulars for still playing card games as adults, a story about a girlfriend’s birthday gift of a card box turning out to duplicate cards the poster had already bought as singles on release day, and finally lunch photos and news about a new Hololive gacha, as the chat rambled on.

    Unpopular, unpopular, unpopular, unpopular.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this one come from 5ch’s “Live: Anything Goes” board, a topic-free chat space where each participant brings their own subject. This time the focus was “hashigo” (梯子, literally “ladder”), card-game community slang for entering multiple official Duel Masters store tournaments (“CS”) held the same day, moving between venues to try to clear the qualifiers. When a poster unfamiliar with the term misread it as “isu” (椅子, “chair”), opinions split over whether it was a deliberate joke or a genuine misreading. Later in the thread, jabs at grown adults for still playing card games crossed with rebuttals of “I do have a girlfriend,” in a familiar back-and-forth about hobbies and age. A story about a birthday-gift card box turning out to duplicate cards the poster had already bought as singles on release day struck a chord as a relatable collector’s mishap, giving this otherwise ordinary chat thread a small glimpse of very human moments.

  • Massive Deer Herd Blankets Southern Alps Mountainside — 500 Strong, Nagano Locals Say ‘Never Seen Anything Like It’

In Nagano Prefecture’s Southern Alps, a deer herd large enough to blanket an entire mountainside was caught on camera, leaving local residents stunned — “I’ve never seen numbers like this.” According to a report from the TV Asahi network, roughly 500 deer were counted. On 5ch, the discussion thread sprawled in every direction: whether wolves, the deer’s natural predator, should be reintroduced; worries about a food-chain domino effect where more deer means more food for bears, and therefore more bears; and even why venison and deer leather haven’t caught on more widely.

    Re: #509
Bears are biologically omnivores and eat pretty much anything, but their actual diet gets passed down culturally.
In other words, cubs raised by parents who mainly eat acorns and never touch meat grow up eating the same way.
It's been observed that meat-eating can start when bears are forced into it during a famine, or when a carnivorous bear turns up in a neighboring range and others "witness it eating meat" firsthand.

So while bears are omnivores by biology, their real-world diet shifts through this kind of cultural transmission.
Apparently some researchers have floated a hypothesis that meat-eaters tend to turn more aggressive while plant-eaters stay docile and timid, but whether that's actually true is unclear.

Background and key points of the debate

Deer numbers in Japan have kept climbing largely because the Japanese wolf, once their natural predator, went extinct in the Meiji era, removing the mechanism that used to keep populations in check. On top of that, an aging and shrinking hunter population has lowered culling pressure, turning damage to forests and farmland into a nationwide problem. The thread split over several points: whether to reintroduce wolves, the knock-on food-chain effect where more deer means more food for bears (and therefore more bears), and the decline of hunting culture alongside falling demand for hide and antler products. One thing readers may overlook — and which posters in the thread pointed out themselves — is that the real bottleneck to using venison and deer leather isn’t a lack of tasty recipes; it’s the shortage of facilities to process the meat immediately after the kill (a gap in Japan’s game-meat processing infrastructure).

  • Buddha Statue Handed Down on Tsushima Confirmed as Japan’s Oldest Imported Buddhist Image — 5ch: “Isn’t That Hoarding a Little Too Well?”

At the special exhibition “Buddhist Images That Came from Kyushu,” now on display at the Kyushu National Museum in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, a 5th-century gilt-bronze Buddha statue that had been passed down in a private home on Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, is on show. Believed to have been made during China’s Northern Wei dynasty, it predates the officially recorded introduction of Buddhism to Japan by roughly 100 years, making it the oldest imported Buddhist image ever found in the country. Although discovered 38 years ago, this marks its first public showing in 30 years. On 5ch, threads gathered simple questions about whether the color seen through the display case is gold or verdigris, along with reactions about the statue’s actual size and the story of how it made its way to Japan.

At the special exhibition “Buddhist Images That Came from Kyushu,” now on display at the Kyushu National Museum (Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture), a gilt-bronze seated Buddha statue (nyorai zazo) from China’s Northern Wei dynasty (453 AD) is on show. Made roughly 100 years before Buddhism was introduced to Japan, it had been passed down in a private home on Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, and was discovered 38 years ago. It is considered the oldest imported Buddhist image ever found in Japan, and this marks its first public display in 30 years. The exhibition runs through the 30th. (By Yoshito Torii)

“This is a Buddha statue that has caught the attention of Buddhist art researchers around the world, including in Europe and the United States,” explained Makoto Osawa, 40, a senior researcher at the museum specializing in imported Buddhist images, standing in front of the glass case.

The seated Buddha stands 11.6 cm tall, or 22.7 cm including its pedestal. Features such as the four-legged pedestal, the wavy, piled-up hair, and the robe draped over both shoulders are considered characteristic of the Northern Wei era, when Buddhist statue-making in China began in earnest.

    It's made of metal, though?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Tsushima has long served as a gateway linking the Asian continent and Japan, an area known for the movement of people and goods well before any official route existed. The fact that this statue predates the official transmission of Buddhism (552 AD per the Nihon Shoki, or 538 AD per the Jogu Shotoku Hoo Teisetsu) by nearly 100 years suggests that imported Buddhist images may have been brought over at the individual or village level even before the official transmission — an easy point to misread as overturning the accepted “year Buddhism came to Japan” itself, which it does not. As for the color seen through the display case, some commenters thought it looked gold, but as explained in the thread, the surface is actually covered in verdigris from copper oxidation, and it only looks yellowish because of the low color temperature of the museum’s lighting. At 11.6 cm tall (22.7 cm including the pedestal), it’s small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, yet the fact that this is only its second public showing since being discovered 38 years ago speaks to the weight of its history.

Background and points of debate on this topic

The “¥5 billion in merch sales” figure that came up in the thread originates from a 5ch post — it’s worth noting this is not an official number released by any management office or company. VTuber revenue is split across multiple pillars, including Super Chats (donations), merchandise sales, and stream ad income, so a rise in merch sales doesn’t necessarily mean donation income has fallen — in some cases total revenue stays stable even when Super Chat income cools off. The thread mixed two competing theories — that strong merch sales might be the flip side of falling Super Chat income, and that the talents’ own purchases of their own merch might be inflating the sales figure — but both remain pure speculation. Alongside this, the thread also carried unrelated topics of very different weight, from judging AI-generated images and illustrations to a heavy personal account of someone’s upbringing. That such a wide range of tones can coexist in a single thread is very much characteristic of the Nandemo Jikkyou board.

  • Angerme’s Autumn Tour NHK Osaka Show: Ground-Floor Seats Still Up for Grabs Right After General Sale Opens

Tickets for Hello! Project idol group Angerme’s NHK Osaka Hall show, part of their autumn hall tour, went on general sale — and the fact that ground-floor seats were still selectable on the seat map right from the start became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread noted the venue holds around 1,000 seats for the matinee and about 700 for the evening show, which kicked off comparisons with the venue sizes of other groups like Morning Musume。, OCHA NORMA, and Juice=Juice, with posters disagreeing over which group suits which venue.

Background and key points of this discussion

When it comes to ticket sales through Japanese play-guide platforms, shows handled simultaneously by multiple sites — Pia, eplus, Lawson Ticket, and so on — tend to show more visible open seats on the seat map even after general sale opens. Shows that sell out entirely through fan-club presales never go to general sale and end up listed on just one site. So the thread’s take that “handled by multiple sites = unpopular” really just reflects how the seat map happens to look, not actual total attendance or sell-through rates. It’s also worth noting that monthly listener counts on services like Spotify and live-show attendance are separate metrics, so direct comparisons should be made with caution. The back-and-forth in the thread is driven mainly by rivalry between different groups’ fans, and no official sales figures were actually cited — worth keeping in mind while reading.

Background and key points of the debate

“Big Daddy,” real name Kiyoshi Hayashishita, is a TV personality who became known through a documentary series following his large family of biological children, and has repeatedly made headlines over the years for cycling through divorces and remarriages. This time, the focus of discussion is that the split came after registering the marriage with zero days of actually dating, and that the marriage lasted a mere 54 days — a notably short breakup even by his own track record. The thread split roughly into two camps: those pointing to “his own repeated pattern of divorcing” as the real problem, and those questioning “the judgment of a partner who married him knowing his history.” Note that the claims about savings and debt he reportedly made before the marriage are presented in the reporting as the ex-partner’s own testimony, with no third-party confirmation given in the article — this shouldn’t be taken as an established fact.

  • Jean Alesi, Who Ended Common-Law Marriage with Kumiko Goto in June, Reportedly Held Secret Wedding in Italy

Former F1 driver Jean Alesi (62) reportedly held a secret wedding on Italy’s Amalfi Coast with his new partner Ania, just two months after announcing the end of his common-law marriage to actress Kumiko Goto (52), according to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera and other outlets on the 29th (local time). Around 100 guests are said to have attended from around the world, including former F1 figures such as Alain Prost. On 5channel forums, users debated why the relationship with Goto never led to a formal marriage registration, and discussed the legal standing of common-law marriage in France.

Multiple Italian media outlets reported on the 29th (the 30th, Japan time) that French former F1 racer Jean Alesi (62) secretly held a wedding ceremony in Italy with Ania, his partner of several years.

Alesi had been in a common-law marriage with actress Kumiko Goto (52) since 1995, but on June 13 this year Goto announced through her talent agency that the relationship had ended, commenting: “I’m sorry to bring up such a personal matter, but I have ended my partnership with Mr. Jean Alesi, with whom I shared my daily life for many years, and we will now each go our own way.” The secret wedding came to light barely two months later.

Corriere della Sera reported: “The Amalfi and Sorrento coasts, which Jean Alesi has long cherished and loved, became the setting for a new chapter in his private life. The Italian-French former F1 champion married today away from the public eye, in secret.” Around 100 guests reportedly traveled from around the world for the ceremony, including sports celebrities such as French former F1 champion Alain Prost (71).

    uh… yikes.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In France and Italy, unlike the image of “common-law marriage” (jijitsukon) in Japan, there’s a widely used legal framework for civil partnerships that carries marriage-equivalent rights along with formal arrangements for property division, so choosing not to file an official marriage registration is not unusual there. This difference in legal systems is part of why the Alesi-Goto relationship was long described as a “common-law marriage.” Opinions in the thread were split over whether this latest ceremony counts as a legal marriage, with some commenters pointing out that a church wedding doesn’t necessarily equal a legally registered one. The fact that it came just two months after Goto’s announcement also drew attention, but as of this report neither party has commented on any connection between the wedding and the split — the story remains based solely on local media reporting.

  • Ochiai and Nakahata Clash Over MLB-Bound Prospects — 5ch Asks: “Isn’t Going to the Majors Itself the Repayment?”

Former Chunichi Dragons manager Masayuki Ochiai and former DeNA BayStars manager Kiyoshi Nakahata appeared on TBS’s “Sunday Morning” to discuss high schoolers who sign minor-league contracts directly with MLB teams, bypassing Japan’s NPB draft entirely. Ochiai took the position that the choice belongs to the player, saying “whether to go or not is his own decision to make,” while Nakahata countered that players “should repay Japanese baseball” first — putting the two at odds. On 5ch, opinions split across a wide range of angles: whether “repayment” is even the right framing, the harsh realities of pay and conditions in the minor leagues, how past direct-to-MLB players like Junichi Tazawa turned out, and how the situation compares to transfer norms in soccer and basketball.

The future trend will be decided by whether players who went straight to the majors, like Rintaro or Morii, end up more successful than their peers who stick to the traditional NPB-to-majors route.

If a player who joins NPB this year lands a big posting-system contract worth a fortune a few years from now while Rintaro's still grinding away in the minors, people will conclude the NPB route was the better path after all.

    Nakahata's the harmony type.
He knows full well Ochiai never budges on his views, and that there'd be no point in him just agreeing with Ochiai anyway — this is a calculated move on his part.
This is just what happens when a lone-wolf type and a Mr. Sociable go head to head.

Why would they owe anyone repayment?
What exactly has Japanese baseball done for them?
    35AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:55
    Re: #10
    Are you serious right now
Baseball's stayed Japan's number one sport precisely because the generations before them built it up.

    Re: #35
For a guy heading overseas early, whether baseball stays popular in Japan is exactly the kind of thing he couldn't care less about.
    47AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:57
    Well, of course.
NPB invests in these guys, raises them with painstaking care, and then the moment they're polished, the U.S. just takes them?
Just thinking about it is infuriating.
    54AnonymousAug 30, 2026 13:59
Re: #47 They're going straight from amateur ball to MLB
    — NPB never even enters the picture.

That was just Yomiuri monopolizing Giants broadcasts.
These days you can watch MLB games on TV too.
    64AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:00
Why would you deliberately go through the minors?
Japanese pro baseball treats you far better.
Surely nobody actually thinks you go to America and just start playing in MLB right away?
    The minors are hell.

    Re: #64
The long wait for free agency is the real drawback.
Best case is something like Ohtani — a side agreement that gets you posted early.
    110AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:07
    What repayment?
What has NPB actually done for kids who haven't even made it past high school ball?
    121AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:08
    Re: #110
They get to use Koshien Stadium every spring and summer, don't they?

    Re: #110
They're raised on taxpayer money, though? It'd be fine if they paid Japanese tax on their U.S. earnings.
    137AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:10
NPB needs to sell broadcast rights overseas aggressively and get more foreign fans dreaming of NPB — otherwise it'll stay MLB's farm system forever.

It's overwhelmingly popular in Japan, so who cares about the rest of the world.
    149AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:12
Isn't going to the majors itself the repayment? lol
    162AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:13
    Re: #149
Well, there is a logic where standing on a bigger, more-watched stage counts as repaying baseball itself lol
    195AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:17
    Re: #149
    That's not repayment of anything.
Though honestly, nobody needs "repayment" anyway.
    306AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:35
    Re: #149
Even if a player goes to the majors, the money Japanese sponsors send out the door outweighs what comes in from America — so it's just a net outflow of cash for Japanese baseball.

Unless Japanese companies stop pouring money into MLB, that is.
    202AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:17
Thinking about what's best for the players, going through Japanese pro baseball first really is the better route.
The minors are seriously such a rough environment.
    211AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:18
    Re: #202
That's basically saying NPB is MLB's farm system in all but name.
    223AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:20
    Re: #211
That's just how it actually is, so it can't be helped.
There's no flipping that — not genetically, not population-wise, not economically.
Still, it's the world's number two league, and you can still become a multimillionaire off NPB alone as things stand, so it's not bad.
    239AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:22
    Re: #211
The minors were never a development program to begin with —
they're a place to fish raw talent out of a huge pile of nobodies.
    356AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:52
A young minor-leaguer makes maybe 7 million yen (~$47,000) at best.
A young NPB player makes around 20 million yen (~$135,000).
    The minors really are hell.

Seems like a lot of people mistakenly think you get instant big money by going to America.
The conditions are clearly better in Japan.
    370AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:59
    Re: #362
    That's also a misconception, honestly.
It's causing a bit of a stir just because a few guys who did land instant big money right after moving to the U.S. have shown up.

    Re: #370
But I'd guess Oda could pull in something like a 500-million-yen (~$3.4 million) signing bonus.
    400AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:05
    Re: #370
Honestly I didn't know so I looked it up — the $1.5 million signing bonus is the only big number; the salary itself isn't disclosed, and estimates make it look pretty modest. Factor in cost of living and the signing bonus is probably about on par with Japan anyway.
    810AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:07
The comparison right now is with soccer and basketball.
Those sports let players go overseas right away, so of course people are going to ask, "what's the deal with baseball, then?"
    817AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:13
    Re: #810
Basketball still has a small sample size of players going abroad, so it doesn't really have that "lets players leave freely right away" image.
Soccer's just absurd — it's less that clubs are being played by the players and more that the clubs themselves seem infected with this "overseas! Europe!" mindset, secretly grinning as they wave players off…
    823AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:16
    Re: #817
Soccer really is out of its mind on this.
    Sumo's the opposite extreme.
Baseball's current standard is that only the genuinely talented ones go — sure, some half-baked ones go too, but they're rare.
    833AnonymousAug 30, 2026 17:22
    Re: #817
In soccer, a cut of the transfer fee gets distributed — I think even the elementary school team a player once belonged to gets something like 0.5%.
The club that receives the transfer fee is required to share it.

Background and key points of this debate

The path of high schoolers signing minor-league contracts directly with MLB teams, bypassing Japan’s domestic draft, drew major attention in 2008 when pitcher Junichi Tazawa signed with the Boston Red Sox. At the time, NPB, citing an agreement related to the rookie draft, refused to let Tazawa return to a Japanese team — a stance that caused friction until it was later corrected. Minor-league contracts often pay less than what young NPB players earn in salary, and the harshness of the conditions is frequently pointed out, though looking at signing bonuses alone, some cases exceed a rookie NPB salary. Opinion on the thread split mainly over whether “repayment” is even the right framing — one side wanted consideration shown toward NPB for providing amateur-era infrastructure like Koshien Stadium, while the other argued individual career choices shouldn’t be burdened with a sense of debt to the sport. The discussion’s spread into comparisons with transfer systems in soccer and basketball is also worth noting as a wrinkle specific to baseball.
