  • Yokohama’s Shoki Oda to Skip NPB, Go Straight to the Majors — 5ch: “This Will Be a Good Test Case”

Shoki Oda, a third-year pitcher at Yokohama High School in Kanagawa, has reportedly decided to go straight to the Major Leagues without first playing in Japan’s NPB, after wrapping up meetings with NPB clubs. The decision comes after he hit 156 km/h (about 97 mph) at this summer’s Koshien tournament and was considered a top-round NPB draft candidate; it’s said to be rare for a top-tier high schooler to bypass NPB entirely. He’s expected to formally announce the decision at a press conference on the 15th. On 5ch, opinions were split between those hailing this as a notable precedent for future prospects and skeptics citing how tough it is to climb the minor-league ladder, pointing to comparisons with past players.

It emerged on the 14th that Shoki Oda (3rd year), the Yokohama High School (Kanagawa) right-hander who has topped out at 157 km/h, is all but certain to challenge the Major Leagues. He had completed meetings with NPB clubs by this date, and after much deliberation is believed to have settled on going straight to the majors without passing through Japan’s pro league first. It’s been about two months since he etched his name in baseball history with a Koshien-record 156 km/h fastball this summer. He will reveal the career path he weighed between Japan and the U.S. at a press conference set for the 15th.

Wondered how you'd even read his name, turns out it's just literally 'Shoki.'

He got completely shut down ("chin-chin"-ed, i.e. thoroughly dominated) by a Japanese college hitter — no way he's cutting it in the majors.

4-5 years in the minors (fastest possible track)
6-7 years in the minors (average track)

Why's everyone acting like he's just gonna pitch in the majors right away lol
He's a high school grad, so he's starting in Rookie ball. Getting called up in 4-5 years would be a miracle
Over there, throwing 155 km/h is just normal even in AA — on four days' rest, no less.

Re: #82, the world's worst food culture sure isn't getting fixed though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

There have been very few cases in Japanese high school baseball of a top draft prospect challenging the Major Leagues directly without going through NPB first. The typical path for promising pitchers has been to join an NPB team, build a track record, and then move overseas years later via free agency or the posting system. The thread split between those who viewed this choice positively — as a potential benchmark for future prospects — and skeptics who pointed out that climbing the minor-league ladder takes years and that language and cultural barriers loom large. Commenters also brought up past standout pitchers like Daisuke Matsuzaka and Roki Sasaki for comparison, but it’s worth noting those players took different career paths, so direct comparisons don’t really hold up. Oda’s track record so far is still centered on his high school performance, so it’s premature to say for certain how he’ll fare in the majors.

  • Uma Musume Gets Its First Pachislot Machine — 5ch: “They Got Permission from Each Horse’s Owner, One by One”

A thread went up on 5ch’s “Geisports Sokuho+” board about Uma Musume Pretty Derby getting its first pachislot machine. According to an article originating from Yahoo! News, the new machine, developed by Kyoraku, features a “training-type AT” — a bonus system built around the game’s horse-training mechanic. In the thread, posters debated the discomfort of turning horse racing into gambling hardware, countered by others pointing out that horse racing — and gacha games themselves — are already forms of gambling. The thread also covered the behind-the-scenes detail that developers got permission from each racehorse’s real-life owner individually, along with general opinions on Kyoraku as a machine maker.

Uma Musume started out with just three — Special Week, Tokai Teio, and Silence Suzuka — so it's actually weirder that Suzuka got dropped from the main lineup.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The pachislot machine is being developed by Kyoraku Industry, with its main selling point billed as a “training-type AT” that mirrors the game’s own horse-training system. Among horse-racing-themed slot machines, KPE’s (Konami’s) “G1 Yushun Club” series is well known for its track record of featuring real footage of famous horses, and Sammy’s “Winning Post” line of machines was also cited as an existing example — with that history forming the benchmark posters used to judge Kyoraku. Another point of debate was the industry practice requiring individual permission from a horse’s owner before turning it into licensed content; the thread noted that while the lineup centers on first-season mainstays Special Week, Tokai Teio, and Silence Suzuka, how to handle horses from the Satono line or the Kitasan Black generation — which haven’t appeared in other makers’ machines — remains a concern for the future. It’s also worth noting opinions never fully converged, with discomfort over gambling use sitting alongside the counterpoint that horse racing and gacha games are both inherently gambling-adjacent to begin with.

  • Hanshin Fall in CS Opener to DeNA, Starter Taira Limits Them to Scattered 3 Hits

Central League champions Hanshin have lost Game 1 of the Climax Series (CS) Final Stage to DeNA. Taira joined DeNA as player compensation when Shun Yamaguchi left for the Giants, and after this gem of a start, some fans say DeNA has ‘gotten its money’s worth.’ Over on 5ch’s ‘Nandemo Jikkyo G’ board, reactions poured in from every angle — criticism of manager Fujikawa’s bullpen management and in-game calls, a pinch-hitting decision that backfired, and even renewed debate over the CS format that lets a third-place team advance.

Both teams, or honestly the whole Central League, just seem weak this year.

    Re: #99
That'd be entertaining in its own way — Yokohama pulling off some dumb, chaotic win feels plausible too.

But Hanshin vs. SoftBank would give Hanshin zero chance — just a drawn-out, one-sided beatdown that turns into a dud of a series.
Remember the final game last year, when some random reliever got hammered and was straight-up crying on the mound…
What is this, Nasukawa Tenshin (the kickboxer famous for sobbing after a loss)? Come on, lol

    Re: #99
They're the third-place team, so losing is to be expected.
Winning would just be a bonus.

    Background and Key Debate Points

The Climax Series (CS) was introduced in 2007 as a format giving the regular-season first-place team an edge in reaching the Japan Series. This time, first-place Hanshin hosted third-place DeNA in Game 1 of the Final Stage, and from the very start DeNA starter Taira held them to just 3 scattered hits, with the 1-through-4 hitters going hitless. The thread split over whether the loss was down to ‘problems with bullpen management and strategy’ or ‘the lineup simply got shut down’ — complaints about manager Fujikawa’s handling coexisted with praise for Taira’s pitching. Debate also kept resurfacing, as it does every year, over the fairness of a format that lets a third-place team knock off the top seed and reach the Japan Series; but as commenters in the thread note, Hanshin itself has advanced from third place before, and lower-seeded upsets have become common in recent years. The annual argument over the CS format’s fairness is a seasonal fixture at this time of year, and it’s worth remembering it doesn’t necessarily reflect the actual talent gap shown in this one loss.

  • Greta Thunberg (23) Joins High Schoolers’ Paris Protest: ‘Our Future Is Being Stolen’

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg (23), once known as the “eco girl,” joined the fifth round of protests held by high schoolers across roughly 10 cities in France on the 13th, Tokyo Sports reports. Her participation — as a 23-year-old who’s no longer a student — in a movement led by high schoolers demanding better educational conditions sparked confusion on 5ch. Comments ranged from the simple question of “why don’t high schoolers just study instead of protesting,” to inquiries about her funding sources as an activist, to a mix of sympathetic takes and sarcastic jabs at her activism, with no consensus reached.

    I don't think she's doing it for fun or attention-seeking — I think it's literally her job.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Greta Thunberg first became known worldwide in 2018 when, at age 15, she began a “school strike” by sitting in front of the Swedish parliament. More than seven years have passed since then, and she is now 23 — yet the protest she joined this time was fundamentally one led by high schoolers, an age bracket she herself no longer belongs to. This twist — a once-teenage climate activist, now an adult, still showing up to join high-school-led protests — appears to be part of why the thread reacted with confusion over her age and standing. It’s also worth noting that Thunberg has repeatedly clashed with China in the past, including voicing support for the 2019 Hong Kong protests and trading barbs with Chinese state media over her physique in 2021 — friction from these past episodes seems to be coloring the reaction to her latest protest appearance as well.

Isn't this kind of prize money classified as 'miscellaneous income' for tax purposes?

Background and Key Points of This Story

“All-Star Thanksgiving Festival” is a live special where viewer-participation quiz segments determine the prize money, and some episodes include a “Gochi”-style segment where cast members guess the prices of items. In the thread, opinions split between those who felt that because Ano-chan’s win was so spectacular it must mean “the show is letting her win,” and those who chalked it up simply to her natural intelligence or to being sharpened by the influence of her comedy partner Soshina. Since she didn’t have much of a “smart character” image at her debut, plenty of reactions expressed surprise at how her persona had shifted. There was also speculation about taxes on the winnings, with guesses like “wouldn’t about 35% get deducted as miscellaneous income?” — though it’s worth noting the actual tax rate and income category depend on the nature of the prize and the contract involved, so the total she announced isn’t necessarily what she gets to keep.

  • SoftBank Lock In Playoff Spot With Just One More Win or Draw in Final 6 Games — 5ch: ‘Is Ham Making an Error Every Second?’

It’s become a hot topic on 5ch that Pacific League leaders SoftBank have reached the point where just one win or draw in their remaining 6 games will lock in their spot in the Climax Series (CS). Have faith in the BayStars.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Climax Series (CS) is a short playoff format that forces the top regular-season finishers into a knockout series for a spot in the Japan Series, and part of its appeal has always been the chance for a lower-ranked team to pull off an upset. The “advantage” mentioned in the thread is essentially a bonus-win head start given to the regular-season’s first-place team, and as commenters note, that bonus appears to have been expanded this season. As a result, the more dominant a first-place team’s season is, the more the CS can feel like a formality, fueling complaints from fans of the lower seeds. At the same time, there’s a counter-argument that it’s only fair for the strongest team to come out on top in the end, and that back-and-forth is the real spine of the thread. The criticism of Nippon-Ham’s defense, meanwhile, is backed by an actual error-count comparison posted as an image, not just a vibe. And the comments about managers undervaluing defense are aimed at their in-game strategy, not personal attacks.

  • Germany’s Sugar Tax Goes Two-Tier in July 2027: 26–32 Cents per Liter

Reports say Germany’s federal government has largely agreed on a “two-tier model” for its sugar tax. Starting July 1, 2027, sweetened beverages with 5g or more of sugar per 100ml would be taxed at 26 cents per liter, rising to 32 cents per liter for drinks with 8g or more. On the overseas forum Lemmy’s c/dach community, the news sparked discussion from multiple angles — confusion over the taxable unit (per liter vs. per container), concerns that manufacturers might engineer products to just dodge the threshold, and worries about the impact on small local breweries.

So apparently it's "26 cents for sweetened drinks with 5g+ sugar per 100ml, 32 cents for 8g+" — why design it this way? Wouldn't 5 cents per gram of sugar per 100ml make more sense?

As it stands, I don't see any real "path toward zero sugar" here.

A two-tier model, exception clauses… this all sounds like it's just creating more bureaucracy. Who was even pushing for this in the first place?

Also, is there any sense in which sweetened drinks from small manufacturers are actually less unhealthy?
    11Anonymous2026-10-14 06:56
    Re: #6
They're not any healthier, but I get the point. Small breweries rely mainly on local sourcing and sales, so a price hike hits their sales far harder than it would a big, established company with deep advertising budgets.

    Re: #40
That doesn't actually answer the question (and it's literally the same passage I quoted). So in the end, how much tax is on a 2-liter bottle of cola? 32 cents? Or 64 cents?

And for a case of twelve 0.5-liter bottles? One lump sum of 32 cents? Twelve times 32 cents? Or 12 × 0.5 × 32 cents?

Right — if you taxed every amount of sugar uniformly regardless of how little, it would completely defeat the tax's whole "behavioral nudge" purpose.

    35Anonymous2026-10-14 07:31
    Re: #27
Originally it was supposed to apply to juice too. And part of why it'll miss the mark is that the revenue isn't being used to subsidize healthy food. Next thing you know cucumbers will cost 5 euros. Hard to believe, but if people who used to drink cola start getting their sugar from apples instead… apples will just go up in price too.

What's this tax revenue even going to be used for? Feeding bureaucrats?
    17Anonymous2026-10-14 09:17
    Re: #11
Yeah, I'm generally in favor of provisions like this. Coca-Cola isn't going under over a small tax increase, but if a small local lemonade brewery goes under, we lose culture, diversity, and jobs along with it.

Personally I think local breweries are the better choice. More ethical, better for the environment, and honestly they just taste way better.

    Re: #40
Reading this, it sounds like the tax is applied flat per container. So a 2-liter bottle and a 250ml bottle get taxed the same amount? What even counts as a "container"? For case sales, I'd at least hope it's taxed per bottle rather than per case… but I guess that's exactly what might happen.

What does everyone think about earmarked taxes (where the revenue is tied to a specific use)? On one hand it seems like a good thing, but on the other it really strips the government of fiscal flexibility.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Sugar taxes are a policy being rolled out across European countries, and tiered taxation based on sugar content is said to encourage beverage makers to reformulate their products. Germany’s new proposal similarly sets two thresholds — 5g and 8g of sugar per 100ml — with different tax rates for each, but in the thread, commenters found the original reporting unclear on whether the tax applied “per liter” or “per container,” and had to cross-check against ZDF and TAZ articles to confirm. Other points raised included concerns about a “threshold effect,” where more products get engineered to land just under the cutoff (e.g., at 4.9g of sugar), and specific examples like Club-Mate, an existing drink that already sits right at the 5g boundary. Notably, much of the discussion focused on fine details of the policy’s design, including the pros and cons of making it an “earmarked tax” tied to a specific use for the revenue.

  • Minami Takahashi Stops Junior Idol From Breaking a Taboo: ‘What Are You Saying?!’

Former AKB48 member Minami Takahashi appeared on Nippon TV’s “Ueda to Onna ga Hoeru Yoru” (Ueda and the Howling Women), airing on the 14th, alongside former HKT48 member Miku Tanaka. During the show, a junior idol brought up the idol-world “taboo” topic of “live mics” versus “dead mics,” prompting Takahashi to cut her off with “What are you saying?!” On a 5channel thread, the discussion expanded into whether it’s even technically possible to keep every performer’s mic live during large group stages, with posters offering technical explanations about how the digitization of wireless mics has eliminated worries about signal interference, name-checking artists known for genuine live singing like Yurina Hirate and M!LK, and mixing surprise at lip-syncing with technical footnotes.

    Re: #76
The number of people isn't really the issue.
Wireless mic signals are digital now, so you don't have to worry about interference even running around 40 of them at once.
The limiters kick in automatically too.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In large idol groups that sing and dance simultaneously, keeping every member’s mic live at all times tends to produce muffled or distorted audio due to handling noise and movement, so switching mics on and off part-by-part has long been standard practice. This is what’s known as a “dead mic,” and it doesn’t necessarily mean the whole performance is lip-synced. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over how much this practice should be considered “normal” — some posters were surprised to learn about it for the first time, while others calmly explained the realities of PA (sound reinforcement) work. The digitization of wireless mics, which has made it easier to run many channels simultaneously, is one reason criticism of lip-syncing has softened compared to the past. That said, the TV segment the article is based on never specified which group or which moment it was referring to, so it’s worth keeping in mind that exactly what Minami Takahashi was reacting to when she called it a “taboo” remains unclear without watching the broadcast itself.

  • Nostalgic Childhood Fad Toys: 5ch Thread Marvels, ‘Kites Actually Fly That High?’

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a thread about “toys that were all the rage in childhood” sparked a wave of nostalgia. Names poured in one after another — classics like Supercar erasers, Rubik’s Cubes, and Barcode Battler, along with Bead-man marble shooters, the milk-cap flipping game “Gyu-pon,” and Nintendo’s Ultra Scope. One especially memorable story stood out: a poster’s first time flying a Gayla kite, which ended with them borrowing their father’s sea-fishing rod and reel to really send it up — only for the line to snap high in the sky where it met the kite, sending it sailing off forever. Alongside the nostalgia came comments like “it hurts more knowing you can never get it back,” striking a chord across generations.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The toys named in the thread span wildly different release periods and generations. Supercar erasers were a fad in the late 1970s, Barcode Battler was released by Epoch in 1991, and Bead-man launched from Takara in the mid-1990s. The Gayla kite was a vinyl kite imported in the 1970s, popular because it flew higher than the washi-paper kites that were standard at the time. Because these toys’ heydays are a decade or more apart, the replies never converge on a single generation’s story — instead, memories from different eras keep merging together one after another. As one comment in the thread put it, “not knowing something is what makes it look so shiny” — each poster is simply bringing their own childhood experience to the table rather than arguing over a shared subject. That’s what sets this thread apart from other chat threads, which tend to spark disagreement.

  • Kaori Manabe Floats a ‘Self-Checkout Psychology’ Theory on Suspect Sugiyama’s Shoplifting — 5ch: ‘Guess You Really Do Get Caught for Cheating’

Yuji Sugiyama of the comedy trio “Waga Ya” was referred to prosecutors on suspicion of theft after allegedly shoplifting groceries from a supermarket in Meguro Ward, Tokyo. Reacting to the news on Fuji TV’s “Toretate!” on the 14th, Kaori Manabe brought up the psychology of self-checkout — suggesting some people might think, “maybe I’ll just slip it into the already-paid bag” when a barcode won’t scan — and remarked, “It is shoplifting, but psychologically it might feel like a notch lower.” On 5ch, a wave of pushback followed, with posts like “that thought would never even cross my mind,” and the discussion expanded into the broader reality of shoplifting prevention, touching on self-checkout surveillance and how overseas customers handle payment.

Kaori Manabe shares her take on self-checkout amid “theft allegation” against Waga Ya’s Yuji Sugiyama: “It’s shoplifting, but…” “Psychologically…”

TV personality Kaori Manabe appeared on “Toretate!” (weekdays, 1:50 PM), the Fuji TV network’s live information program produced by Osaka’s Kantele, broadcast on the 14th.

She commented on the news that the Metropolitan Police Department had referred Yuji Sugiyama of comedy trio “Waga Ya” to prosecutors on the 14th on suspicion of theft, over allegedly shoplifting groceries from a supermarket in Meguro Ward, Tokyo.

I use self-checkout a lot, and I'm desperate not to make any move that looks suspicious

    Re: #1
It never even occurred to me to just bag it without scanning just because it won't beep
That mindset is seriously messed up, that's criminal-in-training territory
    21AnonymousOct 15, 2026 00:55
Guess you really do get caught for cheating at self-checkout
    Good to know
Was he caught in the act, or did they nab him on a later visit?

    Re: #21
Sounds like they checked the footage right away, so maybe they're cross-referencing people's movements with register scans in real time
They could well be using AI for video-linked monitoring and alerts these days
    22AnonymousOct 15, 2026 00:56
If you're gonna shoplift, you don't even need to carry it to the register in the first place
    26AnonymousOct 15, 2026 00:57
When you think about it, isn't it scary that forgetting to scan one or two items by accident could get you arrested?

    Re: #26
At the store I go to, the self-checkout always announces the price when you scan a barcode, so I don't think you'd really forget
Though scanning the same item twice by mistake happens a lot
    27AnonymousOct 15, 2026 00:57
If you so much as shift your bag a little, it flashes "please wait for staff" and I panic
    28AnonymousOct 15, 2026 00:58
Maybe check your own show's sponsors before saying that
    48AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:08
When self-checkout first rolled out at Aeon, for the tempura buffet there was no button for the big chicken tempura (150 yen) — the one item priced differently — and when I asked staff, they just told me to hit "tempura buffet, 78 yen"
They didn't add the item for about a year after that, so it was a nice little loophole to get cheap chicken tempura

    Re: #48
Doing nothing about it for a whole year — what a bunch of useless staff
    74AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:27
Sounds like the kind of thing an impatient efficiency-obsessed guy ("taipa," slang for time-performance types) would pull
And the excuse would definitely be "the machine's fault, blah blah"
    79AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:39
    Re: #74
If it's Re: #8, that's less "impatient" and more sociopath
And honestly, just entertaining the thought that "yeah, people like that exist" feels completely unnecessary…
    90AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:47
The staff who watch self-checkout to prevent shoplifting really come off as unpleasant
I get it, it's because shoplifters exist, but it feels like I'm being suspected and I hate it
When there's a regular staffed register available, I always use that instead
    94AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:50
    Re: #90
Just standing there watching really is unpleasant. Makes me want to say "help me out instead"
    92AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:48
For the supermarket, I go to stores without self-checkout
Though for places like Daiso where you only buy a few items, self-checkout is fine
    96AnonymousOct 15, 2026 01:54
    Re: #92
Full self-checkout is a pain when you're buying a lot of items
So when I have a lot: semi-self-checkout (staff scans, I pay)
When I have just a little: full self-checkout
I switch between the two depending

Background and Key Points of This Debate

“Scan-skipping” at self-checkout has long been considered one of the retail industry’s main shoplifting methods, which is part of why fraud-detection systems linking security cameras with POS data have increasingly been adopted. Suspect Sugiyama has only been referred to prosecutors on paper so far — whether he is actually indicted depends on prosecutors’ future judgment, and the allegation itself doesn’t mean guilt. Where opinions split in the thread was over how to take Manabe’s comment that shoplifting is “psychologically a notch lower” — reactions of “that thought would never even cross my mind” far outnumbered any sympathetic responses. As of this writing, neither Sugiyama himself nor his agency has issued any statement.
