The story

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg (23), once known as the “eco girl,” joined the fifth round of protests held by high schoolers across roughly 10 cities in France on the 13th, Tokyo Sports reports. Her participation — as a 23-year-old who’s no longer a student — in a movement led by high schoolers demanding better educational conditions sparked confusion on 5ch. Comments ranged from the simple question of “why don’t high schoolers just study instead of protesting,” to inquiries about her funding sources as an activist, to a mix of sympathetic takes and sarcastic jabs at her activism, with no consensus reached.

Now that Greta's not a girl anymore, she's just a cringe activist. Nobody needs her anymore.

If you're a high schooler, you'd be better off studying for your future than joining protests.

Re: #33
There's a real difference between answering "what's your job?" with your actual job plus "I also do political activism" versus just saying "my job is political activist" — that's going to land very differently with people.
I think it'd be smarter to wait until you've at least got a real job lined up first.

Wait, what?
She's not a "girl" anymore?!
Re: #33
Still a high schooler at 23…?

"Delinquent" Thunberg presents: "Everyone's Grudge" (wordplay: グレる means "to turn delinquent," a jab riffing on the title format of NHK's beloved kids' song show "Minna no Uta" — "Everyone's Song")

Greta, defender of children — a goddess.

Behold, the Statue of Liberty… er, Greta of Liberty (wordplay on 自由の女神, Japan's name for the Statue of Liberty, literally "Goddess of Freedom")

Serious answers only, please.

How does Greta make money? A part-time job?

Re: #66
Part-time job.
I bet her activism funding is enough to support a freeloader like you too.

She picks out whichever conflict happening in the world is getting the most attention and jumps in to grab some of the spotlight.
But she never touches the serious human rights abuses going on in the Middle East, China, or Russia.

Re: #108
Those aren't environmental issues, after all.
Wading in would just muddy her message.

But things are turning out exactly like Greta said they would.

Like what, specifically?

How long is she going to keep doing this nonsense?
Grow up already.

Re: #144
I don't think she's doing it for fun or attention-seeking — I think it's literally her job.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Greta Thunberg first became known worldwide in 2018 when, at age 15, she began a “school strike” by sitting in front of the Swedish parliament. More than seven years have passed since then, and she is now 23 — yet the protest she joined this time was fundamentally one led by high schoolers, an age bracket she herself no longer belongs to. This twist — a once-teenage climate activist, now an adult, still showing up to join high-school-led protests — appears to be part of why the thread reacted with confusion over her age and standing. It’s also worth noting that Thunberg has repeatedly clashed with China in the past, including voicing support for the 2019 Hong Kong protests and trading barbs with Chinese state media over her physique in 2021 — friction from these past episodes seems to be coloring the reaction to her latest protest appearance as well.
