  • Pro Baseball’s Climax Series Sparks Debate on 5ch: ‘It’s Absurd That Winning the Pennant Doesn’t Guarantee a Spot’

Japan’s professional baseball Climax Series (CS) touched off a heated debate on a 5ch thread, as users traded views on a system that lets the regular-season champion get shut out of the Japan Series if they lose the CS, as well as on the fact that the same CS format is forced even on a runaway Pacific League champion like SoftBank. What began as a thread sparked by Giants and Hanshin fan reactions spiraled into questions about whether the CS should even continue, comparisons with Major League Baseball, and talk about strike-zone calls.

    Feels good, doesn't it
    2AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:08
Once the Giants missed the pennant, they're basically bottom-tier (B-class) anyway — winning or losing this is just a bonus round for them
    3AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:11
"We'll win it! Because we're the Giants."
"We'll win it! Because we're Hanshin."

The fans themselves are the ones being overconfident
    4AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:12
The Giants act like they win the pennant every single year — that's almost impressive
    6AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:13
Honestly, cut back the interleague games and put more weight on the CS instead
Japan really undervalues short playoff series
    7AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:14
Hanshin's only just gotten back to even
    The Giants, though… well, lol
    8AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:14
It's weird they get home field for every single game on top of an advantage win
    9AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:27
If Hanshin as they are right now made the CS, I can only picture it ending close to a 33-4 blowout
    10AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:29
The 1st-place team gets several days of calm prep time while 2nd and 3rd fight it out
The team that wins through only gets one day off before playing again
Doesn't burning your best pitcher just to advance put you at a disadvantage for the rotation?
    11AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:31
Slapping on a half-baked advantage like that is exactly why people start saying 'it devalues the regular season' and kill the buzz
The regular season and the postseason are separate things
    12AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:31
If they want to beef up the CS, they should just add more teams
    13AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:31
Playing 140 games just to narrow 6 teams down to 3 (lol)
    14AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:32
Bet they wouldn't be complaining if their own team was the one winning
    15AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:33
Same dynamic as Morning Musume and Angerme fans losing it over Juice=Juice's rise (a Hello! Project idol-group fandom rivalry)
    16AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:34
Seriously, if they don't reform this soon, the gap with MLB is just going to keep widening
    18AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:42
Still, just casually watching it, something about it feels off
But I guess it can't be helped since it's good for ticket sales
    20AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:44
Playing 140 games only for it to get flipped like this — nobody wins from that
    21AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:45
A rule where you win the pennant race but still can't play in the title decider makes zero sense
    22AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:49
People should realize that whoever wins, nothing in their own life actually changes
    23AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:49
Since there's no promotion or relegation anyway, they might as well just split it into three divisions already
    24AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:49
No, it's definitely more fun with it
If you think it's unnecessary, you're just not enjoying baseball
    26AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:53
    Don't need it
It gets boring because a team that only won a handful of games gets to show up in it
    31AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:58
    Re: #26
It'd be more boring if a team that's in a slump shows up and just gets stomped instead
    27AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:54
In the Pacific League, even the Hawks — who ran away with the pennant by 11.5 games — still have to play the CS
Don't complain about a gap that small in the Central League
    28AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:54
Whoever shows up is just going to get swept aside by the Hawks anyway, so they might as well hurry into the offseason
    29AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:55
Doing this with such a small number of teams in the first place is pointless
    30AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:57
They won the pennant, so as far as I'm concerned that season's baseball is already over
I personally think of the postseason as a separate thing from the league season
    32AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:59
The CS is run based on the season standings, so calling it 'a separate thing' doesn't really hold up
    33AnonymousOct 15, 2026 10:59
I don't see it that way
It only means something if you become the top of the Central or Pacific League
The idea that you can win the pennant and still not get to play for that is ridiculous
    34AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:00
It's not even a matter of boring or not
There's no way a 2nd- or 3rd-place team is going to get anyone excited
    35AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:01
In MLB, it's not even treated as a separate thing — the regular season is treated as nothing more than a qualifier
    36AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:01
But DeNA's the only team with even a slim chance of beating the Hawks
    37AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:03
If Hanshin — who got caught up to by the Giants despite that much of a talent gap — goes up against a SoftBank team that's a tier or two above them, it'll be a repeat of that 4-33 blowout
    38AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:03
I think terrestrial TV broadcasts will disappear eventually too
    39AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:04
People just accept it because 'that's the rule,' but I bet the majority actually think it's unnecessary
    43AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:07
After watching the MLB postseason, NPB just looks lame, outdated, and low-level
Why don't they show that strike-zone-and-pitch-location overlay that's standard on MLB broadcasts?
    48AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:09
    Re: #43
You can actually see that now on the official NPB app
They'll probably use it to build toward adopting ABS (Automated Ball-Strike system) eventually

Huh? I'm just saying they introduced the same thing
Call it a has-been country or whatever, but it's the broadcasters who choose not to use it
    58AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:22
NPB's the only one who's happy about the CS
    63AnonymousOct 15, 2026 11:27
    Re: #58
Are you saying other countries with a CS-like postseason aren't enjoying it either?
You might want to explain that a bit more clearly

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The Climax Series (CS) was introduced in the Pacific League in 2004 to combat falling attendance once the standings were effectively settled late in the season, then expanded to both leagues starting in 2007. Because the first-place team gets a one-win advantage but also has to wait several days while the lower seeds battle it out, the thread split over just how ‘fair’ that setup really is. The clash between doubts over a rule that can let a pennant winner miss the Japan Series entirely, and calls to simply enjoy the short playoff series on its own terms, is a classic version of the long-running debate over whether the CS should exist at all. The fact that the same format applies even to a runaway champion like SoftBank underscores just how lopsided the Pacific League has become, while also reaffirming the CS’s original purpose of preventing meaningless late-season games.

  • ‘I’ll Pay ¥9 Million for Sperm Donation’ — 70-Something Man Scammed Out of ¥38 Million in Mie

A man in his 70s from Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, was offered ¥9 million in exchange for “sperm donation,” then was instructed via LINE by someone posing as a lawyer to buy as many as 571 gift cards at convenience stores, ultimately being swindled out of roughly ¥38 million in total. Why did he go along with a deal that, looked at calmly, doesn’t even add up — paying ¥38 million just to receive ¥9 million? The thread debated why elderly people make such easy targets for scams, how judgment can shift with age, and the fact that stores never stopped him from buying gift cards in bulk, with reactions mixing sympathy for the victim and sheer disbelief.

For men in their late 70s, the dementia rate is already over 10%
But it's also an age where people around them still assume they're fine
So if scammers specifically target that group, they've got roughly a 1-in-10 shot at successfully conning them
And nowadays, with all the personal data leaks out there, organized crime groups have mountains of that kind of data sitting around, which lets them run scams really efficiently

Background and discussion points on this topic

Losses from these “special fraud” scams nationwide are estimated at hundreds of billions of yen a year, and elderly victims still make up a large share of that total. Posing as lawyers or public officials and making contact over LINE, then having victims buy gift cards instead of handing over cash and send in the card numbers, has become the dominant method in recent years precisely because it’s harder to trace and harder to prosecute. The thread zeroed in on why he agreed to a seemingly irrational deal — paying ¥38 million to receive ¥9 million — but what tends to get overlooked is that this kind of scheme isn’t really targeting the victim’s reasoning at all; it’s engineered to exploit time pressure and a reflexive deference to the authority of a ‘lawyer’ title. Buying gift cards in bulk at a convenience store could draw a clerk’s attention as a suspicious transaction, but that isn’t enforced consistently across every store, exposing the limits of front-line fraud prevention.

  • Shohei Ohtani Hits Go-Ahead Two-Run Homer — 5ch: “Even in a Slump, the Other Team’s Still Scared of Him”

This is a live-commentary thread from 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyō” (Live Sports Commentary) board, posted the moment Shohei Ohtani crushed a go-ahead two-run homer. Ohtani had been stuck in a batting slump since the start of the postseason, and word was going around that he’d only returned to the lineup “after some kind of personal negotiation” — so the homer landed right as that story was breaking. The thread lit up with celebration, but plenty of cooler heads chimed in too, arguing that “in the postseason, results are all that matter.” Manager Dave Roberts’s comment that he “couldn’t pull Ohtani because the man himself insisted on playing” also became a talking point, fueling debate over the injury rumors and the reasoning behind keeping him in the lineup.

The backdrop to this thread is that Ohtani’s hitting had been harshly criticized for several games since the start of the postseason, set against the unforgiving postseason standard where “results matter more than individual performance.” Manager Dave Roberts’s remark that he “couldn’t pull Ohtani because the man himself insisted on playing” also got folded into the conversation, repeatedly raising the image of a player who keeps taking the field despite carrying an injury. Where opinions in the thread split was over whether to read this one home run as “a sign he’s turning it around” or “just a lucky result” — disagreement even extended to whether the batted ball was a line drive or just a weak fly ball. There was also pushback against the Dodgers’ “just swing for it” style of baseball, which fed into a renewed appreciation for the Ichiro-era value placed on situational hitting and advancing runners — though it’s worth noting this is likely just emotional venting unique to a win-or-go-home postseason series, not a season-long statistical trend.

  • Nikkei Plunges Over 2,000 Points Intraday as US Rate Fears Hit Chip Stocks

On the New York market on the 14th, semiconductor-related stocks fell sharply on concerns that rising interest rates would weigh on AI investment. In response, sell orders for semiconductor-related issues swelled in Tokyo right from the opening bell on the 15th, sending the Nikkei average down more than 2,000 points at one point. On 5channel threads, opinions were split over whether this drop marks the start of an AI bubble bursting or just a temporary correction. Some pointed out that because the Nikkei’s overall level is now much higher than before, the same point drop carries less relative weight than it used to. Many also voiced concern about individual investors who started investing through Japan’s NISA tax-free investment program being rattled by the volatility.

Concerns over the impact of higher interest rates on AI investment sent semiconductor-related stocks sharply lower in the New York market on the 14th, and sell orders for related issues are piling up in the Tokyo market right from the open.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This sell-off is an extension of the broad selling in AI-related semiconductor stocks that spread through the New York market on the 14th, with the Tokyo market seeing a wave of related selling by association. Since Japan’s expanded NISA program took effect in 2024, individual-investor participation has grown, meaning market swings now hit closer to home for ordinary people’s everyday lives. The thread split over a single question: whether to view this drop as a “temporary correction in high-priced stocks” or as “a sign the AI investment bubble is bursting” — with points raised on both sides. At the same time, since the Nikkei’s overall level has climbed far higher than in the past, the point that the same-sized drop carries relatively less weight than before is worth keeping in mind as a way to read past views that get rattled purely by the size of the point drop.

  • Fire Emblem “Banshisenkou” Reveals Expansion Pass Trailer, Priced at ¥4,400 — 5ch: “They Just Carved It Out and Sold It Separately”

Nintendo’s official “Nintendo Today” app has published footage of the Expansion Pass for the newest Fire Emblem title, Banshisenkou (万紫千紅 — literally “myriad purples, a thousand reds,” a classical idiom for a riot of color). It’s priced at ¥4,400 and went on sale starting today. On 5ch’s Hardware & Industry board — known informally as “Geha” (ゲハ, short for “game hardware,” the board where console-war and industry gossip plays out) — posters piled on criticism of pushing plot details left unexplained in the main story, plus content for side-story characters, into paid DLC, drawing comparisons to past DLC for Fates: Conquest/Birthright, Three Houses, and Engage. At the same time, some users voiced excitement about the newly playable characters, leaving opinion sharply split.

I always think about this, but:
    — Try to open a video from Nintendo's X account, and you get bounced to a Nintendo webpage.
    — Then you have to go hunt for the video there, and if an age-15+ warning pops up along the way, you scroll back up and agree to it.
    — Then you hunt for the video again, tap it, and it reopens through your YouTube account.

    Background and Talking Points

The Fire Emblem series has a track record of using paid DLC to fill in story content left out of the main game — from Fates: Conquest/Birthright on the 3DS, to Three Houses, to the most recent entry, Engage. Criticism built up in the thread over the sense of déjà vu that Banshisenkou is repeating the same pattern. At the same time, some posters pointed out that even DLC from the Three Houses development team didn’t necessarily reveal everything, so there was no real consensus in the thread on just how much ground this new DLC is meant to cover. On the ¥4,400 price, some compared it to DLC pricing from other publishers’ titles released around the same time, so the pushback wasn’t purely about the price being high in isolation. There were also references to the development staff, but these concerned publicly known facts about the development team rather than personal attacks on any individual.

A drama team that gets influenced by that is just way too incompetent

    Background and Key Points

VIVANT is a popular drama that aired on TBS, and its sequel “VIVANT2” is currently airing. The clip that sparked this discussion shows a special forces unit leaping down from a building; it went viral on X after being placed alongside other works, like the jump scene from the live-action Devilman film, and mocked for “lacking dynamism.” This kind of “mock how unimpressive Japanese productions look next to foreign ones” bit is a recurring staple on 5ch, and true to form, the thread focused more on technical nitpicks about the directing and framing than on judging the drama itself. Partway through, though, the thread morphed into a clash between people posing as foreign-drama supremacists and those sneering at them, turning into a self-deprecating back-and-forth over viewing habits in general. Note that the source material included a fair amount of political tangents about a China-related plot element from the sequel, and those portions have been excluded from the quoted replies here. The ratings figure of over 15% was cited as a relatively strong number given the broader trend of declining TV viewership in recent years.

  • Sugakiya Returns to Kanto After 20 Years — 5ch: “Charging ¥490 for a ¥430 Ramen Is a Ripoff”

Nagoya-based ramen chain Sugakiya is reportedly opening its first store in Yokohama’s Midori Ward, marking its return to the Kanto region some 20 years after pulling out in 2006. Founded in 1946 and now operating about 250 locations across the Tokai region, the chain first entered Kanto in 1973 in Yokohama’s Kanazawa Ward, expanding to as many as 50 stores before withdrawing due to poor profitability. This time, the comeback takes the form of an outlet inside an Apita-affiliated shopping complex. Commenters on 5ch were split over several points: why the price differs between the ¥430 charged in Tokai and the ¥490 planned for Kanto, the choice of Nagatsuta and Honatsugi as store locations, and how to judge a business that feels less like a proper ramen shop and more like a snack stand.

Sugakiya was founded in 1946 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, and is a ramen chain operating around 250 stores mainly across the Tokai region.

After opening its first Kanto store in Yokohama’s Kanazawa Ward in 1973, it expanded to roughly 50 locations at its peak, but withdrew from the region in 2006 due to weak profitability.

    Wait, what's going on?
Sugakiya's menu lists ramen at ¥430.
But the video on their site clearly shows ¥490.
So the same ramen costs different amounts in Kanto vs. Tokai?
And since this is being pitched as a "one-coin" deal, does that mean Kanto's ramen is actually priced above ¥500?

Cheap or not, it's not a flavor that can stand on its own as a dish.
Sugakiya survived because it came up in an era when ramen broth in general was weak.
No way that works now — they won't turn a profit until today's kids grow up and it becomes a nostalgic flavor for them.

    Sugakiya

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sugakiya is a long-running chain founded in Nagoya in 1946 that now runs about 250 stores across the Tokai region. It entered Kanto in 1973 with a store in Yokohama’s Kanazawa Ward and grew to roughly 50 locations at its peak, but pulled out in 2006 after failing to turn a profit — making this launch its first attempt back into the region in about 20 years. Discussion in the thread split mainly along two lines. The first is pricing: the ramen costs ¥430 in Tokai but is set at ¥490 in Kanto, with some commenters pointing to shipping costs as the cause, while others noted that regional price gaps exist at other chains too, such as Gyoza-no-Ohsho’s dumplings. The second is how to categorize the store itself: some saw the choice of Apita-affiliated shopping complexes in Nagatsuta and Honatsugi as “out in the sticks,” while others argued that a soft-serve-and-penny-candy-style snack business is actually better suited to a shopping-center location than a standalone storefront. What’s easy for readers to miss is that Sugakiya was never meant to be a serious, stand-alone ramen restaurant — in Tokai it has long occupied the niche of a quick snack you grab while out shopping. Without that context, it’s hard to see where either reaction — “the flavor’s weak” or “that’s exactly the point” — is actually coming from.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The “*He is…” format is a familiar rhetorical device on NanJ-style boards — flatly listing a player’s accomplishments while loading them with irony — and what’s drawing attention this time is that it has spread all the way to English-language forums like Reddit. Behind this is the fact that X’s (formerly Twitter) auto-translate feature now lets Japanese posts flow directly to English-speaking readers, making it easier for internet memes to cross the language barrier. The thread also buzzed about how Ohtani — praised as an MVP candidate as recently as last year — has suddenly become a target of criticism following his batting slump in this year’s postseason. This isn’t really about one specific player; it reflects the psychology of fandom in a results-only sporting world, where praise and criticism can swing to extremes.

  • Financial Income to Factor Into Medical Costs for Over-75s — 5ch: “Totally Support Taking From Rich Old People”

Nikkei reports that Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has settled on a policy to factor financial income — such as stock dividends and capital gains — into the calculation of out-of-pocket medical costs and insurance premiums under the late-stage elderly healthcare system, which covers people aged 75 and over. Implementation is planned for August 2029, and the change is expected to target elderly people holding a certain level of financial assets. In the 5ch Breaking News+ thread, opinions that it’s only fair to take more from wealthy seniors mixed with worries about the impact on NISA tax-free savings accounts and on the “lost generation,” and debate continued over how income would be tracked and the distinction between social insurance premiums and taxes.

Premiums will reflect it too. It's right there in the article.

How are they even planning to track this?

Can they really build a system that automatically catches people who don't even file tax returns?

It's financial income, so that means things like dividends and gains from selling stocks.
That all gets tracked through the brokerage anyway.

In that case, NISA savings investment gains don't count as taxable income, so it's not an issue

Even the generations below the lost generation are in trouble too

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under the current late-stage elderly healthcare system, out-of-pocket costs and insurance premiums are calculated mainly based on income such as pensions and wages, and financial income — like stock dividends and capital gains (excluding tax-free amounts from NISA and similar schemes) — is, in principle, not factored in. This new policy would track that financial income through securities account data and other sources and add it to the cost calculation, with the change expected to apply only to elderly people holding assets above a certain threshold. In the thread, the majority view was that wealthy seniors should be asked to shoulder a fair share, while members of the working-age “lost generation” voiced anxiety about the burden on them growing even heavier down the road. There were also posts that seemed to misunderstand how the system works — for instance, that social insurance premiums are legally treated separately from taxes, and that NISA investment gains don’t count as taxable income. Implementation is slated for August 2029, but details such as the exact asset threshold weren’t disclosed even in the original article (subscriber-only).

  • Shohei Ohtani Starts Batting 6th for First Time in 6 Years — Can the Lineup Shuffle Snap His NLCS Game 3 Slump?

It has been revealed that Shohei Ohtani will start batting sixth for the first time in six years in NLCS Game 3 between the Dodgers and Brewers (October 14, Los Angeles). The team has struggled over its last two games, hitting just .169 with a 5.06 ERA, and attention is on whether dropping Ohtani from cleanup to sixth will help him snap out of his slump. On 5ch, opinions split over the reasoning behind the move — some read it as a managerial call to drop a struggling slugger down the order, others as a compromise forced by sponsorship obligations that require him to keep playing. Some posters also pointed to fatigue from his two-way workload piling up.

Obviously it's not on terrestrial TV, right? Even the 50-50 postseason broadcast (the split-rights deal) only pulled 4% ratings.

Dunno, but it's lazy how these guys never bother writing the start time like it's nothing.

Game 1 was on terrestrial TV though, wasn't it? So it's not a given.

These days you can watch Ohtani with total peace of mind.
    7AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:10
Apparently his bat speed is at an all-time high. Problem is his load/trigger is slow, so his swing path's gotten messed up.

Sponsor money's gonna wreck the Dodgers!
    9AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:11
He was in the way more than expected batting 4th or 5th, so now it's 6th? At that point just don't play him at all.
    10AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:11
Does he have some kind of contract clause guaranteeing him a starting spot or something?
    32AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:18
    Re: #10
Probably something to do with sponsors. Roberts really doesn't look like he wants to play him.

Guess even Ohtani falls apart fast the moment he stops grinding that hard.
    31AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:17
    Re: #15
He's overworked his body doing double duty. Obviously if you run a guy at twice everyone else's workload, his career shortens accordingly. That's exactly why pros normally make you specialize in one or the other even with two-way talent — this is on the idiots who hyped him up with "unicorn" talk and "only Ohtani can do this."

The whole "he trains so stoically" thing was a lie to begin with.

A .169 team average and a 5.06 ERA over these two games — it's not just Ohtani, the whole team's done.
    112AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:51
    Re: #19
Oh, so Ohtani's just hitting team average then. Smith's batting under .100 and has a third of Ohtani's hit total. His game-calling behind the plate wasn't clicking with Yamamoto at all either.
    22AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:15
No hitting, no pitching, no running — the "zero-way player" is complete (a pun on "two-way player").

Add "no fielding" to that list too.
    34AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:19
There's maybe been one season, if that, where he ran the two-way thing at full tilt all year long. The biggest weakness of the two-way approach is that it's just not consistent.

There's no normal reason to keep trotting out a "run-prevention machine," though.

They'll talk him into accepting pinch-hit duty and then just leave him pickled on the bench, obviously.

Instead of all this talk about low ratings, or how PS ratings are low — character-count-wise it'd be way shorter to just say "9 PM."

The Dodgers have to go all-out in the postseason, so it's actually a relief for the team when guys like Kiké or Snell rest during the regular season to stay sharp for it. The most troublesome type of player is the one who keeps saying "I can do it, I've got this" and then can't hit at all in the postseason.
    70AnonymousOct 15, 2026 06:32
    Re: #49
While those guys are resting, somebody still has to do the work or the team doesn't even make the postseason, you know?

I'll go ahead and predict: a blown ABS challenge, a double-play ball, and a walk that ends in him getting thrown out on the bases.

    Re: #100
Batting 9th actually matters — it's the bridge into the leadoff spot.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Game 3 was part of the NLCS (National League Championship Series), and the Dodgers went in carrying a rough patch — a .169 team batting average and 5.06 ERA over the previous two games. Ohtani dropping from cleanup to sixth was notable for being his first such move in six years, and the thread split between two competing theories: that the lineup change was meant to help him snap out of his slump, or that he was only kept in the lineup because of sponsorship obligations. There was also debate over whether the physical toll of his two-way workload was behind the drop in performance, but that remains thread speculation rather than any official team statement. Complaints about the lack of terrestrial broadcast coverage and NHK license fees also showed up in the same thread, but readers should note these aren’t specific to this particular game — they’re a recurring gripe aimed at MLB broadcasts of Ohtani’s games in general.
