The story
On the New York market on the 14th, semiconductor-related stocks fell sharply on concerns that rising interest rates would weigh on AI investment. In response, sell orders for semiconductor-related issues swelled in Tokyo right from the opening bell on the 15th, sending the Nikkei average down more than 2,000 points at one point. On 5channel threads, opinions were split over whether this drop marks the start of an AI bubble bursting or just a temporary correction. Some pointed out that because the Nikkei’s overall level is now much higher than before, the same point drop carries less relative weight than it used to. Many also voiced concern about individual investors who started investing through Japan’s NISA tax-free investment program being rattled by the volatility.

What people said
There's real substance behind it (data centers) and real-world utility, but for regular people it's nothing but costs getting passed down the chain. For the people trading stocks it's just a money game.
The AI industry itself still has plenty of room left to grow.
Everything in daily life is shifting over to AI. I barely even use search engines anymore.
We'll be back down in the 10,000-yen range before long.
Huh? "Half price, times 0.8, minus another 20%" (半値八掛け二割引, an old trader's saying for how crashes compound) works out to about a 70% drop — that's capitulation territory. For the Nikkei, 20,000 yen would be the floor.
Up until about two years ago I was trading Nikkei mini futures, but now it's too scary unless I use the micro contracts.
Why would it? If you work on top of investing you make even more. Double, double.
Doubling it isn't realistic. If you're already pulling in tens of millions of yen a year from investing, there's no way a regular job keeps up 😭
If you quit your job you'd just end up wasting your time on 5ch anyway. Better to keep working.
Mutual funds (投信) don't usually take that kind of beating.
lol
Don't go acting like you know it all when you're just a rookie (トウシロ, slang for "amateur"), lol
There was a time I thought the same thing too… (speaking from experience)
I mean, it's been falling nonstop since the start of the week lol
Well, guess whatever had to come finally came, lol
It hit minus 2,500 at one point. My guess is it pushes to minus 3,000 once the margin-call festival (追証, forced top-up margin calls) kicks in this afternoon.
I'll be dead in 30 years.
So you're saying it's like the Dutch tulip bubble? lol

Oniya's stream is scheduled for 12:30. He probably "got fat" (脂肪した, a jokey pun on 死亡した/"died" — net slang for getting wiped out financially).
I don't hold anything semiconductor-related, so right now I'm only down slightly.
If anything I'm up enough that this sounds like it's happening in some other country lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion
This sell-off is an extension of the broad selling in AI-related semiconductor stocks that spread through the New York market on the 14th, with the Tokyo market seeing a wave of related selling by association. Since Japan’s expanded NISA program took effect in 2024, individual-investor participation has grown, meaning market swings now hit closer to home for ordinary people’s everyday lives. The thread split over a single question: whether to view this drop as a “temporary correction in high-priced stocks” or as “a sign the AI investment bubble is bursting” — with points raised on both sides. At the same time, since the Nikkei’s overall level has climbed far higher than in the past, the point that the same-sized drop carries relatively less weight than before is worth keeping in mind as a way to read past views that get rattled purely by the size of the point drop.
