  • “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol” — wakatte.tv’s Aka actually dropped out, only has a high school diploma

“Aka,” a panelist on the YouTube debate show “wakatte.tv,” has come under fire after old footage resurfaced of him saying, “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol” — when in fact he never graduated and had dropped out. The show is known for its style of panelists openly roasting each other’s academic backgrounds and work performance, so the irony of the very person who dishes out that mockery having padded his own credentials struck a nerve. On 5channel, opinions split between defenders and critics, and the discussion spread to cover the response of a politician said to have defended the show, as well as a debate over a co-star’s educational background.

Okay, so we get that he didn't graduate, but what year did he actually drop out?
    19AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
He's clearly smart enough, so what's wrong with just being a high school grad?
What's there to be embarrassed about?
    20AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
If a Kyoto University degree rates 100 on the envy scale, dropping out of Kyoto University still gets you like a 95.
Just getting accepted is impressive enough on its own.

Background and Key Points of This Story

wakatte.tv is known for its debate format in which panelists openly roast each other’s academic backgrounds and work performance, and “Aka” was often the one dishing out jokes about other panelists’ schools. This time, the controversy centers on the fact that Aka himself — despite usually being the one doing the roasting — had once said, “I graduated from Kyoto University, lol,” even though he never actually graduated and had dropped out instead. On the thread, opinions split between defenders (“just getting in is impressive enough”) and critics (“it’s rich for someone who’s used his academic background to mock others to have exaggerated his own”). The discussion also spread to cover exchanges about co-star Taizo Sugimura’s educational background and the response of a politician said to have defended the show — though claims lacking solid grounding, along with anything amounting to excessive personal attacks on real politicians, have been left out of this piece.

  • Dawnwalker Under Fire Over Blood Depictions — Dev Statement: ‘We’ve Begun Addressing It,’ Sparking Debate Over CERO

The official X account for the dark fantasy game “Dawnwalker” issued a statement titled “To Our Japanese Community,” announcing that it has begun addressing the content that had been criticized in the Japanese version, including adding other language options. The move appears to be a response to the growing backlash in Japan over the game’s blood depictions. In 5ch live discussion threads, users debated the legitimacy of changing content after it has already passed CERO review, explained that CERO isn’t a legal censorship body but rather an organization that provides industry self-regulation guidelines, and brought up past cases — like FF14 and the Atelier series — where a rating changed after release.

    Translation: To Our Japanese Community

We take the feedback we’ve received from all of you seriously, and we’re writing to let you know that we have begun addressing the points raised regarding the Japanese version.

There are a few cases, few as they are, where the rating changed after release — FF14 changed on purpose (B→C→D), and Atelier changed after a slip-up (A→B) — so it's basically up to the publisher.

    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 21:27
    Re: #49
    Exactly this.
CERO has no power to force overseas publishers to leave Japanese out of the international version.
If every Western developer just made that the norm, anyone who wants to play uncensored could simply make an overseas account and buy it there —
that would effectively neuter CERO entirely.
    55AnonymousSep 4, 2026 21:30
This has nothing to do with CERO.
If they were trying to squeeze into a B rating, sure, but this was rated Z from the very start.

    85AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:42
Does everyone actually understand CERO's stance?
They don't 'impose restrictions' on a work themselves.
They just 'provide guidelines' for what content can go through distribution channels.
So according to CERO, the restriction itself is just the publisher 'self-regulating' based on those guidelines.
Their stance is: 'We (CERO) aren't the ones forcing the restrictions.'
Basically: 'If you're unhappy, feel free to strip out all the restrictions — we just won't be able to get it onto shelves, that's all.'
And since you can't sell without getting onto store shelves or storefronts, it's not viable as a business, so publishers end up having no choice but to follow the guidelines.

So the logic is: if you have complaints, take it up with the publisher, not CERO, since it's the publisher doing the self-regulating.
    92AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:18
    Re: #85
CERO originally started as an internal division of CESA, and was spun off as an independent outside body once the public grew sensitive to games' potential effects on minors.
Game companies alone weren't seen as credible enough to fend off public criticism, so they brought in figures like a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and educators from famous schools to boost their authority.

And CESA, as you probably know, is the symbol of the third-party publisher alliance from Japan's PlayStation golden age.
It's an organization publishers created to protect their own interests.

Since it's a regulatory body backed by CESA, which functioned as that third-party alliance's secretariat, almost every domestic game publisher is a member.
    94AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:35
Isn't it just Steam that's getting the restrictions lifted?
    Not sure about Xbox,
but PS will probably stay as is.
    98AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:52
    Re: #94
    Yeah, that's my guess too.

Background and Discussion Points on This Topic

CERO originally began as an internal division of the game publisher association CESA, and was later spun off as an independent third-party body in response to growing social criticism over the effects games might have on minors. It is not a legal body but an industry self-regulation organization — CERO itself doesn’t impose “restrictions”; rather, it sets guidelines for content that retailers and distributors will carry, and publishers adjust their content to fit those guidelines. In the thread, some questioned, “If content can be changed after review, what’s the point of the review?” — but there are precedents of ratings changing after release, as with FF14 and the Atelier series, and how a patch is handled is largely left to the publisher’s discretion. It’s an easy point to misunderstand that Dawnwalker’s PS version is still being sold under its original Z rating, meaning CERO’s review standards themselves haven’t actually been shaken. Some raised a political angle, suggesting the game is “on the LDP’s radar,” but this is speculation from some posters and hasn’t been backed up by any official statement or by those involved.

  • September 5th is ‘Propose With a Bulb Day’ — 5ch: ‘My oshi! ❤😎’

September 5th is “Propose with a Bulb Day,” established by Flower Garden Karen, a flower and houseplant shop in Osaka. The date comes from a wordplay on the numbers 9 (“kyu”) and 5 (“kon”), spelling out “kyu-kon” (bulb/proposal). The idea is for men to give women flower bulbs as a way to pop the question. On 5ch’s live-discussion board, a late-night thread kicked off with this trivia, but the conversation quickly drifted away from the anniversary itself and spiraled into unrelated chatter — whether a guy named Daisuke Hori is the real deal, how little sleep comedian Sanma gets, who’s actually been to a wedding, and fan-casting for a One Piece live-action movie.

The date comes from the wordplay 'kyu (9) kon (5)' — read together as 'kyukon,' meaning both 'bulb' and 'proposal.'
Unlike Valentine's Day, where women confess their feelings to men, this day flips the script: it's meant to give men a reason to propose to women, with the hope that they'll gift a flower bulb on this date to set the moment in motion.

    Background and talking points

“Propose with a Bulb Day” is an anniversary established by Flower Garden Karen, a flower and houseplant shop in Osaka’s Chuo Ward, set on September 5th based on the wordplay “kyu (9) kon (5)” for “kyukon” (bulb/proposal). The idea, mirroring Valentine’s Day in reverse, is for men to give women flower bulbs as a prompt to propose — but within the thread, this trivia served only as a jumping-off point, and the actual discussion had little to do with the anniversary itself. On “nandemo jikkyo” (anything-goes live commentary) boards like this one, the founding topic is often just a pretext for starting a thread, with conversation routinely veering off in all directions — and true to form, this one drifted into questions about whether a man named Daisuke Hori is real, rumors about celebrities’ private lives, and fan-casting chatter for a movie adaptation. Readers going in expecting a deep dive on the anniversary itself, based on the headline alone, may be surprised to find the actual thread barely touches on it.

On September 4, Reebok Japan’s Instagram account (@reebokjp) posted full-body shots of Kawaguchi, showing off her long, slender legs in a mini skirt and a slit long skirt.

As ambassador, Kawaguchi will appear in visuals wearing a range of items over a six-month period, from this month through next February. The featured items will be released at apparel retailers nationwide on a rolling basis.

    Background and Discussion Points

Reebok is an American sports brand that made its name in the 1980s and ’90s with proprietary technologies like the “Pump Fury” and “Zigtech,” building a strong following in Japan during that era. In recent years, though, its presence on store shelves has faded, and plenty of thread comments noted they hadn’t heard the brand’s name in ages. Haruna Kawaguchi has recently been cast in a wide range of ad campaigns spanning cosmetics, appliances, and apparel, and this ambassador deal — running six months through next February with multiple seasonal visuals — is a different kind of arrangement from a one-off ad appearance. Some in the thread pointed out just how many endorsements she’s landed, but it’s not unusual for ad work to cluster around one talent given agency strategy or high name recognition. Worth noting: the marriage and pregnancy comments floating around the thread aren’t part of the original announcement and remain unconfirmed chatter.

  • NY Yen at 156.23-33: 5ch Users “Want to Eat $0.59 Hamburgers Again”

The yen was sold on the New York foreign exchange market on the 4th, falling 48 sen from the previous day to 156.23-33 yen per dollar. On the 5ch News Flash+ thread, opinions clashed over this level, touching on speculation about a Bank of Japan rate hike and the effectiveness of currency intervention. Some voiced nostalgia for the days of 80 yen to the dollar, saying “that era was better,” while others accepted the weak yen, saying “around 160 yen is just right” — views on the appropriate level were split. Opinions on the Takaichi administration’s economic management were also divided, and the discussion went well beyond just the exchange rate figures.

[NEW YORK, Kyodo] As of 8:40 a.m. on the 4th, the yen was trading at 156.23-33 to the dollar on the New York foreign exchange market, down 48 sen from the previous day.

    Re: #2 Re: #1
What determines a currency's value is the economic strength of the country that issues it.

And the source of a country's economic strength is the supply and demand generated within it.

Supply and demand aren't split between different people — both exist within a single person.

Workers work harder to buy better things, so demand and supply both increase, and the economy grows.

People living off social welfare don't see their income rise from working,

so they try to raise their disposable income by buying things cheaper, which only pushes things toward reducing added value.

Social welfare may be socially just, but it's economically harmful.

What Japan needs is to convert the people dependent on welfare into workers.

To do that, the only option is to make people who are healthy enough to work but don't, actually work.

Specifically, what needs to happen is cutting pensions and welfare payments for people under 80.

    >On January 31, in a campaign speech for the lower house election, PM Takaichi remarked on the Foreign Exchange Fund Special Account, which manages the funds used for currency intervention, saying, "The weak yen is helping us out — the fund's returns are looking great right now." Re: #200
Spending is overshooting even more than that…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Currency intervention — the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Japan selling dollars to buy yen (or vice versa) from their holdings — is a tool for temporarily moving the exchange rate, but it’s said to lose effectiveness quickly unless structural factors like the Japan-US interest rate gap actually change. The thread’s main split was over whether the Bank of Japan should rush to raise rates: a hike would curb yen weakness, but some worried about side effects like rising mortgage rates and the culling of “zombie companies.” Another point of contention was the yen’s appropriate level, with some accepting that “around 160 yen keeps both companies and domestic consumption stable,” while others countered that “with high prices already crushing consumption, the economy can’t hold up unless the yen strengthens.” Views on the Takaichi administration’s economic management were split too, though it’s worth noting this isn’t a conclusion that follows directly from the 156-yen figure itself — it’s mixed in with speculation and secondhand information colored by each poster’s own position.

  • 5ch Users Get Hyped Over MBTI Tests, Debate Color-Coded Types and Compatibility

In a thread titled “Tell me your MBTI” posted on the Nandemo Jikkyo G (Anything Goes Live) board, users shared and compared their 16Personalities test results. Results like ENFP, “Commander,” and “Debater” poured in one after another, and the conversation turned to type-based stereotypes: NT types (purple) love arguing online, SJ types (blue) tend to be well-adjusted to society, and SP types (yellow) skew toward being outgoing extroverts. Some pointed out that results can flip easily depending on how you answer, while others checked their compatibility with their partners’ types — revealing a range of opinions on just how much stock to put in MBTI.

    Background and Talking Points

The 16Personalities site used in the thread is a free personality test, but it’s a separate private service from the official MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) developed by psychologists Myers and Briggs, and it’s said to have no connection to The Myers-Briggs Company, the U.S. trademark holder. The thread’s remark “reminder: that’s a fake MBTI test site” appears to reflect this distinction. Likewise, the idea of color-coding the four-letter types — like calling NT types “purple” — comes from the “temperament theory” proposed by psychologist David Keirsey, and isn’t part of the original MBTI framework. Because MBTI sorts personality into a definitive combination of four categories, it tends to make for lively, entertaining discussion, even though psychologists still widely question its reliability and validity. The thread showed both skeptical comments (“it changes easily depending on how you answer,” “can’t believe people still buy into this stuff”) alongside posts genuinely interested in the cognitive-functions theory — suggesting many people enjoy it less for the results themselves than as a way to better understand themselves and others.

  • Juice=Juice’s Duet at the Hamada Song Festival Goes Viral in 3 Hours — Tops 470,000 Views

A duet performed by Juice=Juice members Inoue and Danbara (Reiruru) on the September 4 broadcast of “Hamada Kayosai” went viral within about three hours, with the post racking up 473,000 views. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, many praised their vocal skill, with comments like “their harmony was so clean it sounded lip-synced.” At the same time, the show’s own household TV ratings came in at just 3.3%, and reactions split over how to interpret the gap between the buzz on social media and the low broadcast ratings.

Funny how, even at this point, there are still tons of people tweeting that they just learned her name for the first time.

    Background and Points of Debate

“Man-buzz” (万バズ) is slang for a social media post whose reactions — likes and the like — exceed 10,000, a metric distinct from raw view/impression counts. In the thread, two camps coexisted: those who took the strong response from viewers outside the Hello! Project fanbase as “proof of mainstream appeal,” and those who suspected the buzz was manufactured by insiders (self-promotion). Because the social media buzz and the show’s 3.3% household TV rating were being discussed side by side, opinions split over how to interpret the two figures together. TV household ratings tend to strongly reflect the viewing habits of older audiences, while social media reactions tend to reflect the interests of younger audiences — the thread itself never raises the premise that the two don’t necessarily align, but it’s worth keeping in mind when weighing these seemingly contradictory numbers.

  • “American Lake” Refusal Sends Veteran Map App Soaring to #1 on the App Store

Following Apple Maps and other apps relabeling the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America,” a new push to rename a lake “American Lake” has become the latest talking point. One veteran map app reportedly refused to make the change — and instead of losing ground, it shot up to #1 in the App Store rankings. On 5ch, posts riffing on the renaming trend piled up one after another, with the discussion spreading into debates over map apps in general and comparisons with Japan’s own map services.

Even that guy Dave Spector said "Lake Epstein" would be a good name (Spector is an American-born TV personality famous in Japan; the reference is to Jeffrey Epstein)

    Background and Key Points

Under a January 2025 executive order, the Trump administration called for the U.S. domestic name of the “Gulf of Mexico” to be changed to the “Gulf of America,” and both Google Maps and Apple Maps fell in line. The news generating buzz this time is that a veteran map app which refused a similar renaming request climbed to the top of the App Store rankings — based on an article ITmedia published on September 2, 2026. The thread saw a steady stream of joke place-names poking fun at the renaming craze, with some commenters tying it back to Japan’s own map services, while opinions split over just how much a name change should count as “political deference.” Note that the original article does not specify the name of the lake in question or the app involved, so readers should consult the source article for further details.

  • Ramen Jiro Kyoto Sparks Debate Over ‘Finish Your Large Bowl in 15 Minutes’ Rule After Customer Vomits Nearby

Kyoto’s hugely popular ramen shop “Ramen Jiro Kyoto” was the subject of a report by Joseishi (Women’s Own) after a customer who ordered a large portion couldn’t finish it and ended up vomiting nearby. The shop has a rule for large orders: finish within 15 minutes of being served. Whether that standard is fair became a hot topic on 5ch’s News Speed+ board. The article notes the shop itself says “it’s totally fine if you leave food unfinished,” but the thread split sharply between “15 minutes is way too short” and “it’s your own fault for ordering more than you can eat — personal responsibility.”

Quite a lot of people get diarrhea from eating ramen
Some people always get it with extra-firm noodles (barikata) — those people really should not eat ramen at all
Seriously, you can end up with an intestinal condition.
    92AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:48
    Re: #85
I'd bet it's the back fat (senaka-abura). There are probably people allergic to kansui (the alkaline noodle water) too, but if it doesn't happen at other shops that's probably not it — and I don't think garlic is the culprit either, surprisingly.
    97AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:50
    Re: #85
I think it's the amount of fat — could be the back fat or the chashu pork causing it.
    146AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:59
    Re: #85
Kansui is alkaline, so it doesn't fully break down and irritates the stomach — that's just a normal reaction. The longer noodles boil, the more kansui dissolves into the water, so getting sick from extra-firm (barikata) noodles is clearly that. Though sometimes it's fat causing indigestion, or garlic getting to you.
    86AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:45

    Re: #145
It was already bad to begin with, so no loss!!

Background and key points of the debate

Ramen Jiro is known for serving noodles, soup, and toppings in portions several times larger than typical ramen, and because each branch operates almost independently, the etiquette for ordering (“the call”) and the standard for whether you must finish your bowl or can leave food varies shop by shop. The “finish your large in 15 minutes” rule causing a stir here appears to be a policy unique to the Kyoto branch, which is why commenters on the thread expressed surprise, saying they’d never heard of such a rule before. Even though the shop repeatedly states in the article that “it’s completely fine to leave food unfinished,” online the rumor that “leaving food gets you banned” has taken on a life of its own. Opinions are split between those questioning a shop that keeps serving portions large enough to make people physically ill, and those who place the responsibility on customers for choosing how much to order — making this a debate that doesn’t reduce neatly to “the shop is at fault” or “the customer is at fault.”

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “Ramen Jiro Kyoto: Customer who ate the large portion vomited nearby → “Finish within 15 minutes” rule sparks mixed reactions of “that’s really too short” and “personal responsibility”.”

  • Takuya Kimura’s gutsy Yoshinoya beef bowl chow-down draws flak — some say he’s “trying too hard to look like a foodie”

Yoshinoya’s new commercial featuring Takuya Kimura, “Me and My Favorite Beef,” began airing nationwide on September 3, and a scene where he heartily wolfs down an “extra-large negi-daku with raw egg” bowl became a talking point. While some criticized both the eating style and his foodie-sounding way of ordering, 5ch saw plenty of pushback too, with comments like “it’s not really bad enough to deserve this much hate” and “isn’t this just a handful of complaints being blown up into a ‘controversy’ article?” The thread also cleared up some misunderstandings about how negi-daku (extra onion) actually works, along with reminders that Kimura has been criticized for his eating style in commercials before. In the end, the thread focused less on the commercial itself and more on a clash of opinions over how the criticism was being framed.

The foodie-sounding line is scripted, and the eating style got the OK from the crew, so viewers have no business complaining
    21AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:25
    Oh, he's still alive?
Thought he died suddenly a few years back

    Re: #21
    Huh? What do you mean?
    39AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:29
    Re: #21
If you mean the Giants guy, that was over 15 years ago
    22AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:25
Watched the video — it's really not bad enough to deserve this much hate
    28AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:27
Extra-large, extra sauce, piled high with red pickled ginger!
    33AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:28
Honestly, getting mad about this is a bit unhinged
I don't think it looks great either, but it's not bad enough to actually deserve criticism
People just want something to bash
    34AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:28
Onions aren't even that good, don't need a ton of them
    41AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:29
Gotta hand it to the production crew, they shot it at an angle so his tongue never shows on camera
Still has a full head of hair too, so jealous
    42AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:30
There was a time the beef plate in my beef-and-salmon set was so small it looked like someone had already snacked on it. Haven't been back since.
    44AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:30
Forget Kimura's eating style — anyone eating at a gyudon joint isn't exactly minding their manners, it's just messy eating in general
    45AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
    Re: #1
People who can't feel satisfied unless they voice a complaint about absolutely everything
    Sounds exhausting
    47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
Extra meat topping, a bit more sauce
and a ton of red pickled ginger
    48AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
I use raw egg (gyoku) too, but dropping it straight into the bowl and wolfing it down after a quick chopstick stir is admittedly kind of crude

The egg comes out in its own little dish, so you mix it there first, then pour it into the bowl from low down and stir it through so the flavor's even before you dig in
    49AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
Well, Nakai seems more like the type who'd actually eat at Yoshinoya
    50AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
I think there'd be demand for a stripped-down Yoshinoya that only sells regular and large gyudon
And obviously no ticket machines or tablet ordering
    56AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:34
    Re: #50
No idea what crowd would actually want that
    51AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:31
Watched the ad and honestly, Kimura's voice is really good
    54AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:32
I mean, he got slammed for that ochazuke commercial 30 years ago too
    Nothing's changed
    57AnonymousSep 5, 2026 00:35
The complainer, apparently: "I'm the one who eats Yoshinoya gyudon the best!"

    Background and Key Points

Yoshinoya’s new commercial “Me and My Favorite Beef” has been airing nationwide since September 3, and the scene of Takuya Kimura heartily wolfing down his gyudon appears to be scripted. The thread also revealed some misunderstandings about the order itself. Several posters pointed out that “negi-daku” isn’t a topping that adds extra beef — it actually swaps in more onion for less meat — and some users had mistakenly assumed it was a bonus order that got you more for your money. On the criticism of Kimura’s eating style, opinions were split between those who said he’s been called out for this in commercials for years, and those who argued that web news outlets are simply blowing a handful of complaints into a full-blown “controversy” story — with many posts questioning the reporting itself rather than the substance of the criticism. Some also noted that Kimura faced similar criticism in a commercial more than 30 years ago, a reminder that intense scrutiny of celebrities’ table manners is nothing new.
