  • Friday Roadshow airs ‘Titanic’ Part 1, sparks reactions — 5ch: “DiCaprio was at his peak during his Romeo+Juliet era”

On September 4, Nippon TV’s “Friday Roadshow” aired the first half of the 1997 film “Titanic.” In an unusual two-week format, the second half is set to air on the 11th. On 5ch, the famous scene of DiCaprio and Kate Winslet embracing at the bow sparked a wave of posts reminiscing about how young the actors looked, roughly 30 years after the film’s release. At the same time, there was grumbling about the two-week airing format and some mocking comments about the film being overhyped as a masterpiece, making for a thread where opinions were far from unanimous.

Net abuzz over first half of two-week broadcast of the classic “Titanic” — bow embrace scene draws “What a scene… to think it sinks after this” and “Feels totally different watching it now than as a kid”… battles “T Inui” for the top spot on X trends

Nippon TV’s “Friday Roadshow” (9 PM) aired the first half of James Cameron’s “Titanic” (1997) on the 4th — a film that shines brilliantly in cinema history as a massive blockbuster. The second half will air the following week, on the 11th, in a two-week format.

Just before the end of the first half, the broadcast showed the famous scene of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet embracing at the bow, followed by the scene where DiCaprio’s character Jack sketches Winslet’s character Rose in the nude.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Titanic” is James Cameron’s 1997 film, widely known as one of the biggest hits in movie history and a multiple Academy Award winner. This broadcast on “Friday Roadshow” split the runtime — normally shown in one sitting — into two parts with a full week’s gap in between, which drew complaints on the thread about the airing format itself, with comments like “Friday-Saturday I’d get, but two separate weeks is annoying.” The main focus of discussion wasn’t so much the content of the film itself as the “passage of time” — nearly 30 years since its release. Many posts reminisced about how beautiful DiCaprio and Kate Winslet looked when they were young, while other posts noted that naming Titanic among one’s top 5 favorite movies tends to get you mocked — suggesting that while the film’s reputation as a classic is well established, there’s also a segment of viewers who take a cooler view, seeing it as overhyped. The thread also touched on an anecdote about co-star Billy Zane (who played the villainous Cal): his performance was apparently so convincing that he faced backlash from audiences after the film’s release.

  • Shohei Ohtani Wants to Keep Playing Despite Injuries — Manager Roberts: “We’ll Decide Based on What’s Best for the Team”

It has emerged that Shohei Ohtani told the team he wants to keep playing despite ongoing issues with his left knee and right biceps. The discomfort — which began in his left knee in early June and his right biceps in early July — has persisted on and off for nearly three months, and swing irregularities reportedly began appearing after the August 30 game against the Tigers. Manager Dave Roberts said, “He wants to be out there, but ultimately we’ll decide based on whether it’s good for the team,” signaling a shift toward team-led management of his playing time — a call that had previously been left to Ohtani’s own feel. On 5ch, reactions split between those seeing a sense of déjà vu from his Angels days and those saying he should rest instead of pushing through it.

On the possibility of a 10-day injured list (IL) stint, Roberts would only say, “We’ll judge it day by day based on how he’s feeling.” The day before, Ohtani struck out swinging and was seen shaking out his right arm afterward; Roberts revealed the discomfort extends up into his neck, saying, “It feels like something from the biceps up through the neck isn’t working the way it should. He wasn’t getting the response he wanted and was wincing.”

Ohtani first reported trouble with his left knee in early June and his right biceps in early July. Up until now, decisions on whether he’d keep hitting or how his pitching rehab would go had respected his own feel and input. But after nearly three months of ups and downs, a “warning sign” appeared when swing irregularities showed up following the August 30 game against the Tigers. With the season heading into its final stretch, Roberts explained that his playing time will now be managed by the team going forward. “We’ll decide whether to put him in the lineup based on what’s ultimately best for the team. Last night was the turning point. He wants to play. But we’re not going to put him out there just because of the name on the back of his jersey,” he said, indicating the team will carefully assess his condition from here.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Ohtani reported discomfort in his left knee in early June and his right biceps in early July, and the condition went back and forth for roughly three months. Decisions on whether to keep swinging or how to proceed with rehab had previously been left to his own judgment, but after swing irregularities became noticeable following the August 30 game against the Tigers, manager Dave Roberts made clear the team was shifting to team-led management, saying he wouldn’t play Ohtani “based on the name alone” even if Ohtani wanted to be out there. On the thread, opinions split between those seeing a sense of déjà vu — “same pattern as his Angels days” — and those arguing he should rest up and prepare for next season. It’s also easy to overlook that whether Ohtani plays is tied directly to the business side of things too, such as the contractual restriction preventing a minor-league send-down and the fact that the Dodgers have apologized to tourists over his absences.

Voice actress Hanamiya Uina (nicknamed “Ui-na”) has been announced as a main character in the TV anime “The Elusive Samurai.” At the same time, her appearance at a talk show during the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair (Kyomafu) was also revealed. On the thread, fans expressed surprise at Hanamiya’s growing momentum as she expands her career from “Love Live! Honestly, if you actually want to be a voice actor, Love Live! isn't the right path for it.
The time you should spend building experience as a rookie voice actor ends up tied up in singing and dancing instead.
You're better off being the type who's happy as long as she gets to sing, dance, and do solo work, and doesn't care much about the rest.
    82AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:59
    Re: #75
Even so, that's still the elite track compared to the vast majority of voice actors who never get anywhere.

    Background and Discussion Points

Hanamiya Uina debuted as a member of “Love Live! Hasunosora Girls’ School Idol Club,” and alongside the anime’s second season, she has taken on a growing list of outside work, including Bushiroad’s new project and “The Elusive Samurai.” The thread’s comparisons to a “rickety old ship,” a “speedboat,” and a “luxury liner” reflect how posters were rating cast members who’ve landed opportunities outside Hasunosora — and it’s nothing unusual these days for voice actors who debuted through social games to juggle multiple IPs at once. It’s a common misconception that one cast member having a heavier workload says anything about another member’s talent; casting comes down to individual auditions and offers. The Kyomafu talk show itself brings together a mixed cast from Nijigasaki High School Idol Club and Hasunosora, reflecting a broader trend of events that cross over multiple projects within the Love Live! franchise.

  • Hikaru on unauthorized reposting of his paid videos: “I’ll seize their bank account even if they’re on welfare”

YouTuber Hikaru (35) has released a video showing himself, accompanied by a lawyer, directly confronting a user who allegedly reposted his membership-exclusive paid videos without permission. In the video, Hikaru states that “ordinary YouTube clips are fine, but reposting paid content is simply not okay,” and adds that he intends to seize the person’s bank account even if they are a welfare recipient. In response, a thread on 5channel’s Geinou/Sports News+ board saw a wave of comments that, while agreeing his stance against unauthorized reposting was reasonable, questioned whether the statement was actually feasible, since welfare benefits are legally protected from seizure.

YouTuber Hikaru (35) updated his official YouTube channel by September 4th, addressing the issue of his paid membership videos (¥490/month) being reposted without authorization.

The video, uploaded under the title “Raphael reposted my paid video without permission, so I brought a lawyer and went to confront him in person,” shows fellow YouTuber Raphael asking, “So clips themselves aren’t a problem, right?” to which Hikaru replies, “Ordinary YouTube clips are fine. But paid content is simply not okay.”

He got famous off a video exposing the trick behind festival stall (tekiya) lottery games, which even got picked up by TV (who knows if it was staged though).
He originally built his success by being seen as a "good guy" who won people's sympathy.
If he goes after illegal streamers of anime, dramas, and movies, he might win back more supporters.
But if it turns out to be staged again, this could really be the end for him.

You can still receive benefits if your income doesn't reach the minimum standard.

You're allowed to work while on welfare,
and you can even get deductions applied.
    60AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:57
Accounts registered under a welfare recipient's name get monitored by the local government office,
so any deposits end up getting confiscated by the authorities.
If they had YouTube revenue, it should already have been confiscated.
If there's regular income, welfare benefits get suspended.
    62AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:59
I get where Hikaru's coming from, but seizing welfare benefits just isn't possible.
    Too bad.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Welfare benefits are among the assets protected from seizure under Japan’s Public Assistance Act and Civil Execution Act, and even once such funds land in a bank account, seizure is effectively very difficult as long as their origin as welfare payments can be established. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t whether cracking down on unauthorized reposting was justified, but whether Hikaru’s claim that he’d “collect even from welfare recipients” is legally feasible at all. Many replies cited the fact that welfare benefits are protected from seizure to question the statement, while others expressed support for his hard line against unauthorized reposting itself. Notably, when a welfare recipient earns income, it is in principle deducted from or offset against their benefits — the thread didn’t dig deeply into how the system would actually treat someone who has enough income to afford a paid membership in the first place.

Yeah, fair enough. Guys say "I like you" because they want to sleep with you. Otherwise they won't get to. Not romantic feelings at all lol

Background and key points of this topic

“Can friendship between men and women really exist?” is a recurring evergreen debate topic on 5ch, and this round was sparked by Mori Kasumi voicing a concern from the women’s side: “Even when I clearly say we’re just friends, the guy ends up developing romantic feelings anyway.” The thread saw several posts trying to explain the presence or absence of romantic feelings using evolutionary-psychology-style reasoning, but it’s worth noting that none of this is based on actual statistics or research — it’s just personal opinion on an anonymous message board. On top of that, neither the “it doesn’t exist” camp nor the “it does exist” camp ever agreed on a shared definition of “friendship” (e.g., whether sexual interest or mutual benefit is involved), so the discussion talked past itself and never converged.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News Plus) thread “[Entertainment] Mori Kasumi weighs in on “friendship between men and women”: “Women struggle with this too” / “Even when I declare we’re just friends, the other person ends up developing romantic feelings anyway”.”

  • Montedio’s New Stadium Only 10% Built — 5ch: “That ‘On Track’ Claim Sounds Sketchy lol”

J2 club Montedio Yamagata held a press briefing on September 4 about the new stadium under construction in Tendo City, announcing that work is roughly 10% complete and progressing on schedule. The stadium is going up just south of the existing ND Soft Stadium Yamagata, with a design that touts getting fans as close as 8 meters from the players, and it’s aiming to open in 2028. On 5ch, the thread buzzed with skepticism about calling the project “on track” when it’s barely a tenth finished so soon after breaking ground, curiosity about how much of the total budget is actually secured, and discussion of the design skipping one side’s stands for now, with expansion planned for later.

A press briefing was held on the 4th at the construction site for J2 club Montedio Yamagata’s new stadium. Officials say the work is proceeding smoothly.

Construction on the new stadium is underway just south of ND Soft Stadium Yamagata in Tendo City.

    Re: #71
Seriously, why does Nagoya even have to use that track-and-field stadium? There's already a dedicated ball-sports stadium in Toyota.

    Background and Talking Points

The new stadium is being built adjacent to ND Soft Stadium Yamagata in Tendo City, and the only fact confirmed in the source article is the 10% progress figure — the funding breakdown discussed here is speculation based on 5ch posts. The figures claiming Escon is covering 5 billion yen, local government 3 billion yen, with the remaining 8 billion yen still unaccounted for, come from user posts rather than any official announcement and remain unverified. Building one side’s stands first and expanding later to roughly 20,000 capacity is a design approach shared by several recent J.League stadiums, keeping initial costs down while allowing expansion to match demand — commenters cited Hiroshima’s Peace Wing Stadium, reportedly praised by the head of the Japan Sports Agency, as a similar example. Much of the rest of the thread, however, consisted of baseball-versus-soccer fan rivalry and jabs at a particular YouTuber critical of stadium construction, exchanges which fall outside the scope of this article.

  • Matsuko Criticizes How Bento Boxes Are Plated — Ariyoshi Agrees: “Salted Mackerel Stinks”

On the September 4 broadcast of “Matsuko & Ariyoshi: Fleeting Paradise,” Matsuko Deluxe griped about modern bento boxes, saying “more and more of them just have the side dishes piled on top of the rice.” Ariyoshi Hiroyuki also chimed in, citing salted mackerel as an example: “I think it smells.” On the 5ch Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, the remark set off a wave of complaints about bento price hikes, shrinking containers, and smaller rice portions, while some pushed back with comments like “Complaining about a smell that mild at 53 seems off” — splitting the thread between defenders and critics.

    Fri, Sep 4, 9:32 PM

Talent Matsuko Deluxe (53) appeared on TV Asahi’s “Matsuko & Ariyoshi: Fleeting Paradise” (8:00 PM), aired September 4, and lamented recent trends in bento boxes.

Matsuko opened with, “Bento boxes have changed lately too, haven’t they?” and continued, “Isn’t there less of that classic ‘bento’ feel these days? Don’t you see more of that stuff just piled on top of the rice? Like grilled fish — I don’t know about putting that right on the rice.”

I don't know what point you're trying to make with that image, but
if 'there's something on top of the rice and it smells, so I hate it' is the standard,
then I say just eat nothing but separated dishes — rice bowls included

Are your taste buds really that refined to begin with?
    79AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:20
    Re: #56
    That's a rice bowl or a mixed-rice combo,
which is different from what Matsuko and the others are talking about
If instead of just grilling mackerel and plopping it on rice they seasoned it properly kabayaki-style like a real rice bowl,
then bringing up that image as a comparison would make sense
    58AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:47
More than the smell, it just gets in the way of eating the rice
You have to move it somewhere first but there's nowhere to put it

    Something like this?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth noting that this topic originated from casual chat on a TV Asahi talk show, not a feature segment on a news program. In recent years, bento boxes have trended toward smaller containers and rising costs, driving a shift toward “one-plate” style bentos that pile side dishes on the rice to cut down on the number of separate items — and complaints about shrinking rice portions and pricier containers were prominent in the thread (comments 8, 11, 14, 26). At the same time, Matsuko’s comment itself was less about “smell” and more a matter of taste regarding appearance and texture, and one comment (33) pointed to cooking method (grilling versus torch-searing) as the actual cause of the mackerel’s odor, raising a technical point that went beyond simple likes and dislikes. Where the thread split was over whether to view this kind of criticism as “a celebrity’s pampered complaint” or as “a fair jab at the realities of the bento industry” — a divide the comments alone don’t resolve.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Matsuko speaks out on recent bento trends: “I don’t know about putting it on top of the rice” — Ariyoshi too: “Salted mackerel… I think it smells”.”

  • Shiraku fires back at ‘think of those who can’t have kids’ critics: ‘Celebrating them is just what humans do’

On September 4, rakugo storyteller Tatekawa Shiraku pushed back on X against calls for more consideration toward adults without children. Citing a post by Hiroyuki, who had pointed out that “some people demand consideration for those who can’t have kids whenever someone happily posts about a birth,” Shiraku argued that “isn’t celebrating a child’s birth just what it means to be human?” On 5channel, the thread ranged widely — from debate over how much consideration childless people are owed, to sarcastic jabs referencing Shiraku’s own past personal life, to views on singlehood in an era of declining birthrates and manners around raising children in public.

    Fri, Sep 4, 7:58 PM

Rakugo performer Tatekawa Shiraku (63) updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on the 4th, sharing his personal take on calls for “thinking about the feelings of people who can’t have kids.”

Shiraku opened with: “Hiroyuki was lamenting on X. Apparently there are people who say it’s wrong to post happily on X about things like a baby being born, because it shows a lack of consideration toward adults who don’t have kids. Their reasoning is that more consideration should be shown to people without kids. What is the world coming to.”

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The “be considerate of people who can’t have children” controversy started when Shiraku responded to a post from Hiroyuki, and underneath it lies a broader clash of views over Japan’s declining birthrate. In the thread, many commenters pointedly brought up — with a sarcastic edge — the fact that Shiraku’s own wife had an affair (with one of his apprentices) back in 2016. Terms like “konashi” and “koashi” (both meaning “childless”) are common shorthand on 5channel and can carry a derogatory tone depending on context. Complaints about children’s noise in public spaces — strollers on trains, kids in parks — ran alongside the main debate; it’s easy to miss that this isn’t simply a “should we be considerate or not” argument, but one tangled up with a separate debate over childrearing manners in public.

  • Is posting homemade Chiikawa figures on social media okay? The line depends on sales and ad revenue

The smash-hit film ‘Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island’ has left official merchandise in short supply, and homemade figures made by fans are now trending on social media. After Bengo4.com News covered the story, 5ch users traded opinions like “Just posting it should be fine, right?” and “Isn’t it a problem once sales or ad revenue get involved?” Opinions split over where exactly to draw the line — including cases where someone pays another person to make a figure for them, and how to treat cases where likes and view counts translate directly into income.

    Re: #181
Only if you're making money off it.

Background and key points of this debate

Under Japanese copyright law, turning a character into a 3D figure counts as reproduction/adaptation and in principle requires the rights holder’s permission. Making one privately just for your own enjoyment generally falls within the bounds of private-use reproduction and isn’t much of an issue, but posting it on social media goes beyond “private use,” which is technically considered a gray area. The thread’s central debate was over the difference between simply posting something versus monetizing it through sales, ad revenue, or affiliate marketing — the latter causing greater harm to the rights holder’s interests and being viewed as more clearly problematic. At the same time, doujin markets like Comiket only function the way they do because organizers proactively screen out works that infringe copyright — the fact that something is “tacitly tolerated” is not the same as it being “legal,” a distinction that’s easy to misunderstand. There was also the point that paying someone else to make a figure for you could itself amount to commissioning an unauthorized reproduction of a copyrighted work, making it different from simple private enjoyment.

In the September 4th Yakult–Chunichi game, both teams repeatedly squandered scoring chance after scoring chance in a battle of botched at-bats, and the 5ch live-thread lit up with cries of a ‘historically garbage game.’ Chunichi loaded the bases with two outs in the 5th, loaded them again with one out in the 7th, and had a runner on 2nd with two outs in the 9th — all without scoring. Is it 9/4, so they're playing a crap game to match? (9="ku," 4="shi" sounds like "kuso," meaning crap)
I'm getting so irritated I might start hating baseball

    Re: #27
    Suffering from sheer weakness
"9-ru-4-mu" (wordplay spelling out "kurushimu," meaning "to suffer," using 9=ku and 4=shi)
    45AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:43
The rain slowly picking up just enough not to get the game called — that's some high art too
    49AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:46
    Re: #45
This is gonna be talked about as a legendary game this whole season
    Too beautiful
    46AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:43
No delay called and it's already this late
    I'm sleepy
    48AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:45
    Re: #46
Feels like I'm getting heckled by the stands
Like an endless void of nothingness just keeps passing
    53AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:51
The joy of witnessing a historically shit game unfold
    This'll never happen again
    58AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:52
    Re: #53
Not gonna lie, there's something moving about witnessing a historic moment
    60AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:53
Runners keep getting on — errors included — and still zero runs score, genuinely trash
This is way worse than sandlot ball, where at least a mistake usually leads to a run
    65AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:55
    Re: #60
Because they're piling mistakes on top of mistakes
Getting thrown out stealing off the catcher's own wild throw is basically art at this point
    70AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:55
Surely this one's going in, I can feel it
    72AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
    Re: #70
    That's what you'd think, huh?
    71AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:56
Can we file for a refund on the grounds this doesn't meet the bar of a professional show?
    89AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:58
    Re: #71
Really learned today just how painful it is watching a game where neither side seems to want to win
    88AnonymousSep 4, 2026 22:58
Even the way it ended was garbage
This is gonna be a legendary game
    97AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:00
    Re: #88
Honestly, witnessing a legend being made is genuinely moving
I think the memory of today's game is gonna stick with me for the rest of my life
    100AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:01
Went down in history as a legendary shit game lol
    102AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:02
    Re: #100
Feels like the phrase 'historically shit game' was invented just for today
    110AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:03
Making fans sit through this whole game only for it to end in a rain-shortened call — they must be in tears
    121AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:06
    Re: #110
Still better than dragging this out till midnight and ending in a 1-1 draw though
    117AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:05
Trading one run per inning — that's some real artistry
    126AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:11
    Re: #117
And on top of that, a home run gets your hopes up right before — boom, right back down
    124AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:09
Going all the way to the 12th would've been entertaining in its own way
But an abrupt, no-delay forced ending has its own kind of flavor too
    128AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:11
    Re: #124
As a piece of art I'd give it a perfect 100
There's a weirdly moving quality to it too
    130AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:14
After watching this, the other 10 teams can't casually throw around the term 'shit game' anymore… lol
    134AnonymousSep 4, 2026 23:14
    Re: #130
The real deal really is on another level
Truly in a class of its own

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Kuso jiai” (crap game) is well-worn 5ch slang for games marked by repeated weak at-bats and botched chances — it functions less as a jab at any individual player than as mockery of the game’s flow itself. This game blew up because both teams kept building scoring chances — two outs with the bases loaded, one out with the bases loaded, and so on — only to come away empty again and again; even in professional baseball, this degree of lopsided scoring inefficiency is rare. As the rain grew heavier through the game, some in the thread wondered aloud whether it might get called early due to weather. Note that the actual final score and how the game was ultimately settled are not stated in the thread — the discussion centers squarely on reactions to the repeated “chances squandered” pattern from the early innings through the late innings.
