  • FF7’s Finale Runs Out of Room on Switch 2 — Get Ready to Pay Extra for a Special SD Card

The Switch 2 version of the final chapter in the FF7 Remake trilogy has sparked discussion on the hardware/industry (“gehaban”) board, after users pointed out that with only 256GB of internal storage, players will need to buy an additional “microSD Express” card — a special format that regular microSD cards can’t be used with — just to fit the game. The first two entries, Remake and Rebirth, already total around 90GB combined, and the finale alone is said to take up another roughly 130GB, meaning keeping all three installed at once could cost anywhere from a few thousand yen to nearly 30,000 yen just in SD cards. Some pushed back in the thread with comments like “just delete it after you beat it” and “the PS5 version eats up just as much space,” so opinions were split on how big a problem this really is.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:24
    Only microSD Express works
    256GB is about ¥9,000
    512GB is about ¥29,000
    5AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:28
    What are you talking about?
It'll fit on the internal storage, won't it?

That'd be unthinkable for a modern gadget, but…

Why'd they make it only work with a proprietary memory card
let us use the regular SD cards like before

SD Express isn't some proprietary format at all
    18AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:38
Remake and Rebirth were about 90GB combined
and Liberation (the finale) is 130GB
so unless you buy an SD card you can't fit all three lolol

Granted, this is just Steam numbers, but

Somebody's working hard on that negative campaign
Well, I'll just be buying it on Switch 2 as normal though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, and expansion is only supported through a dedicated microSD Express slot — the regular microSD cards used on previous Switch consoles won’t fit. SD Express itself is an industry-standard format set by the SD Association, not a proprietary Nintendo format, but compatible products are still low in supply and tend to carry a higher price tag. The prices cited in the thread — “around ¥9,000 for 256GB, around ¥29,000 for 512GB” — are rough real-world figures cited by thread participants, not an official guaranteed lowest price, so that should be kept in mind. There was also pushback along the lines of “just delete it after you finish it,” but that argument doesn’t really hold for users who want to play multiple titles in parallel, or who might want to go back and replay them later.

  • Kids’ ‘Puku Puku’ Stickers Skyrocket in Price — Did Only Resellers Cash In?

Kids flocked to variety stores for “Puku Puku” stickers, and for a while resale sites saw prices soar to many times the retail price. According to a Daily Shincho article, the boom has since cooled off, with some stores now offloading stock at “80% off” fire-sale prices. On 5ch’s Newsflash+ board, a discussion broke out between those who felt things had settled back into a calmer, genuinely kid-driven boom now that the resellers had moved on, and more cynical voices who suspected resellers had been artificially manufacturing the demand all along.

Now going for “80% off”: the current state of the sticker boom that had kids flooding variety stores and prices spiking on resale sites — with sighs that “only the resellers made money”

The pro-reseller crowd keeps saying it's good because it keeps the economy moving, but stuff keeps getting cancelled — it's not making anything better at all.
They need to regulate the system that makes reselling possible in the first place.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Reselling via flea-market apps has spread beyond game consoles and trading cards to even cheap children’s toys. In this case, opinions on the thread were split over whether the crowded stores and skyrocketing prices reflected genuine demand or were manufactured by resellers gaming supply and demand. Some pointed out that manufacturers can’t easily ramp up production because of the heavy burden of equipment investment costs, which complicates the simple claim that “manufacturers profit either way, even when resellers buy up stock.” There have also been repeated incidents involving popular character merchandise — such as the suspected under-the-counter sales during Kura Sushi’s Chiikawa collaboration — and this sticker boom can be seen as another example of the same pattern.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsflash+) thread “Now going for “80% off”: the current state of the sticker boom that had kids flooding variety stores and prices spiking on resale sites — with only the resellers profiting.”

  • Komeo Shaves His Head to Apologize Over Crab Ramen Food Poisoning: ‘It Wasn’t Made in Advance’

Komeo, a chef with a background as a fighter, apologized on YouTube on September 5 over a food poisoning incident linked to the “chilled crab ramen” served at the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival in Tokyo on August 22–23. Appearing in a suit with his head freshly shaved, he said the route of the Salmonella infection has not yet been identified, and once again denied longstanding suspicions that ingredients had been “reused.” Reactions on 5ch were split: many dismissed the head-shaving itself as a meaningless gesture, arguing compensation and an explanation of the cooking process should come first, while others cautioned against piling on a young entrepreneur for taking a risk, and some questioned the responsibility of the festival’s organizing committee.

    September 5, 2026

Chef Komeo, who has competed in the one-minute fighting event “Breaking Down,” updated his YouTube channel on the 5th. He apologized for the food poisoning incident involving the “chilled crab ramen” served at the “Azabu-Juban Summer Festival” (August 22–23), while once again denying the “reused ingredients” allegations.

Komeo appeared with his head shaved, wearing a black suit and navy tie. Bowing deeply, he apologized: “To everyone who was affected, to your families, and to everyone involved — I am truly sorry for the tremendous pain and trouble this has caused.”

To everyone piling on Komeo now that they've got the chance: don't crush a young talent who's fighting desperately hard for Japan. You should at least show some respect to someone who's clawed his way up from rock bottom, grinding himself down along the way. This habit of hammering down the nail that sticks out is exactly what's driving Japan's decline. Praise the fact that he's challenging himself before you criticize the failure. He's apologized — just accept it graciously.

Someone who's genuinely fighting desperately hard — even if they want to serve original, creative dishes — knows that without solid fundamentals there's no real application, and that's true in any field. Normally you'd apprentice at a well-known ramen shop, learn the actual procedures and how to run a business, and then go independent.

Wearing a watch and bracelet covered in Salmonella — it's over. As dirty as a toilet, on par with a smartphone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In Japan, shaving one’s head at an apology press conference has long served as a symbolic gesture of “sincerity,” and whether that gesture actually means anything became the central point of debate on the thread. The press conference included technical explanations — that the route of the Salmonella infection has not been identified, and that although bacteria were detected in two employees they haven’t been confirmed as the source — but it did not touch on specifics like compensation amounts for victims or details of the crab ramen’s cooking and transport process. There was also no mention of whether the Azabu-Juban Summer Festival’s organizing committee had confirmed permits or what responsibility they bear, a point easy to overlook given that this apology was made solely by the vendor. Komeo is also a YouTuber known for competing on the fighting show “Breaking Down,” and his fame produced a split reaction: skepticism toward the apology on one hand, and sympathy for a young entrepreneur taking risks on the other.

A statement from Kawarazaki Okamura about “Iku Tsuba,” the paid streaming show featuring Hello! Project’s Tsubaki Factory, has become a hot topic on 5ch. He explained that the show ended because of illegal uploads to Bilibili, and that a revival is now impossible.

The thread mixed reminiscing about the show’s viewer numbers and the content in its final stretch with a split in reactions: some took the illegal-upload explanation at face value, while others suspected the real reason lay elsewhere. Since it was a paid show to begin with, some argued it should be treated purely as content for existing fans rather than a tool for attracting new ones, turning the discussion into a broader debate over what it actually takes for a show like this to survive.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Iku Tsuba” is believed to be a paid streaming show featuring Hello! Project’s Tsubaki Factory, viewed through CS/cable-linked services and streaming platforms. The thread was sparked by a statement from Kawarazaki Okamura, described as someone connected to the show, explaining that it ended because of illegal uploads to Bilibili and that a revival is impossible. Bilibili is a China-based video site, and there have long been reports of Japanese paid programming and terrestrial-broadcast content being reposted there without rights holders’ permission — as seen in comment 24, complaints of “why is this one Chinese site allowed to run wild” are a recurring theme with other shows too. Opinion in the thread split over whether to take this explanation at face value or to suspect it as cover for some other underlying issue (such as production circumstances or changes among the cast), with comment 55 voicing suspicion that “the real reason lies elsewhere.” There was also a difference in temperature over how the show should be positioned: since it’s paid content, should the priority be attracting new fans who expect free viewing, or should it be accepted plainly as a program for existing fans? Worth noting is that illegal uploading isn’t an issue unique to this one show — it’s being discussed here as a challenge facing the industry as a whole.

  • China Festival Hits Tokyo’s Shibuya with ‘Real Chinese’ Food Stalls — Sparks Debate: Does Tenshinhan Even Exist in China?

On September 5, a Japan-China cultural exchange event called “China Festival 2026” kicked off at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. About 100 stalls offering close-to-authentic “real Chinese” (gachi-chuka) food and panda merchandise are set up, running through September 6. At the opening ceremony, executive committee chairman and former Japanese ambassador to China Yuji Miyamoto, along with Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao, gave remarks. On 5channel threads, discussion heated up over food-culture questions like whether dishes such as tenshinhan (crab omelet rice) and chuka-don actually exist in China, plus debates comparing Chinese cuisine to Japanese cuisine — alongside some political posts about Japan-China relations.

An event promoting Japan-China cultural exchange, “China Festival 2026,” began on the 5th at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward. About 100 stalls — including close-to-authentic “real Chinese” food and panda-themed merchandise — drew crowds of families. The event runs through the 6th.

At the opening ceremony, executive committee chairman and former Japanese ambassador to China Yuji Miyamoto said he hoped the event “can be a starting point for building the foundation of Japan-China relations.” Chinese Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao said in a video message that he hoped visitors would “get a feel for China’s development in this new era.”

Chinese food made by Chinese people is the real deal.
The Chinese-style food Japanese people make is really just Japanese food in disguise.

Background and key points of this discussion

The China Festival is an annual event held at Yoyogi Park, run under the same kind of framework as other national cultural events like the Thai Festival and India Festival mentioned in post #9. The fact that tenshinhan and chuka-don didn’t originate in China but were developed independently in Japan isn’t a new claim — it’s been reported before, as shown by the article linked in post #76. Within the thread, genuine curiosity about this kind of food-culture trivia mixed with debate over which cuisine is superior, Chinese food or Japanese food, along with some antagonistic posts about Japan-China relations. Many of the latter included blanket insults toward entire nationalities or claims not grounded in fact; this article focuses mainly on excerpts related to food culture.

  • Was Monster Hunter Rise Bashed Too Much? 5ch: ‘Wilds Was Even Worse’

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (aka “Geha”) board debated whether Monster Hunter Rise deserved the harsh criticism it got at launch. There was general agreement on complaints like thin content volume, no true final boss, and dissatisfaction with the endgame mode Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou) — but plenty of posters argued the later title Wilds was even worse, and that the Sunbreak expansion turned Rise’s reputation around. Others pushed back, citing the grindy “half-Rise” feel right after launch (a pun on Rise sounding like “raisu,” rice) and the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system, arguing problems lingered even in Sunbreak. The discussion ended up less about judging Rise on its own and more a full comparison across the series.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:13
Compared to Wilds, having thin content was almost cute.

And it's not like Nintendo did anything special; FromSoftware is just cozying up to them on its own.

Same thing got said about companies joining Smash Bros — bottom line, everyone just wants that "Nintendo stamp of approval."

Not sure if "volume" is the right word, but since you basically never died, clear time was actually faster in Wilds — including cutscene skips.
    8AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:19
Rise getting bashed is fair enough — weapon balance is a mess, and there's no true final boss. I get why Rampage, as the replacement for the old Siege events, is unpopular, but making it the endgame content is the real problem.

Doesn't Rise basically have zero flaws besides thin content at launch and weaker graphics?

The combat's fun, the characters aren't grating, there's barely any of that cheap "gotcha" padding games use to fake difficulty, and the UI isn't bad either.

    16AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
Guess the finishing blow was the endless nerfs followed by Akuma (the Street Fighter crossover). They only teased Lagia's right leg and barely added real content — felt like they never intended to let people actually play.
    17AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:28
It's not just Rise — fanboys of whatever platform doesn't get a Monster Hunter release will always bash it relentlessly and obsessively. Conclusion: Geha (console-war board) addicts are just unhinged. 😨
    18AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:29
Rise didn't even have a true ending at first, and the thin content was a real complaint. Sunbreak made it way more fun though.
    19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:30
Rampage is a bad mode, and on top of that, locking the real final boss behind a future update is straight-up unfinished-game marketing — of course it got bashed.
    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
Cutting Rampage entirely for Sunbreak was a bold call. I figured it was Rise's signature feature, so I assumed they'd just refine it and keep it going.
    22AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31

In both Rise and Sunbreak, having to go pick up those will-o'-the-wisp things (Spiribirds) one by one is a pain. And in multiplayer you feel bad spending too much time collecting them, so you barely get any.

    Re: #76
That's Producer Tsujimoto's policy, so it's a tough one to change. Tracing it back, it stems from World's clear rate being way too low — so starting with Rise, the base game got structured that way specifically to push players toward buying the expansion DLC.
    77AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:19
Rise got forgiven because Sunbreak actually polished it up properly — not because Wilds flopped. Something like 4G still probably hasn't been forgiven to this day.
    80AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:24
    Re: #77
Polished up by Sunbreak? There's still no forbidden/taboo monsters, leveling up Qurio rank is just as tedious as ever, broken buff skills wrecked the balance, and the absurd gacha system that is Qurious Crafting left time-attack rankings crawling with cheaters. It was such a bad game it stayed worse than World the whole time.

    Re: #88
This is the most decisive part: "ship garbage, then declare victory anyway." I think that's the common thread behind pretty much every major flame-war release lately, not just Wilds. That's exactly where the trust gap with Rise got too wide to close — Wilds kept making the worst possible move in its follow-up damage control.
    96AnonymousSep 5, 2026 19:51
Back in the 3DS era, even though people trashed the graphics nonstop, alternating base and "G" versions never really gave off a "thin content" impression.

    Re: #96
Maybe it was just the times — hardly anyone compared each game to its predecessor back then.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Monster Hunter Rise launched on Switch in 2021 and reached its fully polished form with the major 2022 expansion, Sunbreak. The thread’s main focus is looking back at how fair the harsh criticism at launch really was. The central target of complaints, Rampage (Hyakuryu Yakou), was the replacement for the series’ traditional large-scale Siege events, and the practice of holding the true final boss back for a post-launch update rather than shipping it at launch is a pattern that has repeated across the series, not something unique to Rise. In the thread, many argued Rise looks better in hindsight compared to the later title Wilds, which drew technical complaints despite the developers’ confident, combative public statements. At the same time, some pushed back, pointing to the gacha-like Qurious Crafting system and rampant cheating in time-attack rankings even in Sunbreak, arguing Rise “still hasn’t been forgiven” — leaving the debate without a clean, simple verdict.

Early on, attention centered on how long pitcher Daichi Ishii could stretch his scoreless-innings streak, but it finally snapped late in the game. On defense, Yuta Izumiguchi’s error stood out, and the thread swung between highs and lows the whole game.

    Background and talking points

The “acting manager” in the thread’s title is the nickname reflecting that the Giants are currently playing under an interim manager rather than a fully appointed one, and it’s carried straight through this ongoing series of live-commentary thread titles. As the roster news at the top of the thread (post 2) shows, this season is seeing a major roster overhaul spanning the draft, free agency, and released players, and the thread’s mood reflects just how closely fans are following the front office moves. “Our team” is standard internet slang Giants fans use for their own club, with no deeper meaning intended. Pitcher Daichi Ishii’s “scoreless streak” refers to the number of consecutive scoreless innings he’s built up appearance after appearance, and it’s a frequent talking point in live threads as a gauge of a reliever’s consistency. The exchange around Ishizuka — getting harshly criticized only to deliver a timely hit moments later — is a classic case of an anonymous-board post getting instantly undercut by results, and is better read as part of the thread’s live energy than as any real verdict on the player. Likewise, the error attributed to Izumiguchi on defense was a one-off moment in a game-deciding situation, and should be viewed separately from any judgment on his season as a whole.

  • Hiroshi’s Campfire Stand Dispute: Manufacturer President’s Wife Speaks Out — 5ch: ‘The Contract Basically Seized All Our IP’

A dispute over contract terms has surfaced between comedian Hiroshi (54) and outdoor gear maker Sho’s, whom he’d approached about creating an original campfire stand. Since company president Shoichi Takaku suffered a mild stroke ten years ago and can’t take the public-facing role himself, his wife has been explaining the situation based on their LINE messages. According to her account, the conflict began when the contract — which originally just said “we won’t make the same product” — later had clauses added stating “no versions in different sizes or materials either” and “non-exercise of the author’s moral rights.” On 5ch, opinions split sharply along lines of legal knowledge over whether that clause amounted to stripping the manufacturer of all its intellectual property.

    9/5 (Sat) 11:00

“My husband, who serves as the company’s president, had a mild stroke about ten years ago, and I don’t want to put him in the spotlight, so I’ll be answering based on our LINE conversations instead.”

So says the wife of Shoichi Takaku, president of outdoor gear maker Sho’s. In late August, comedian Hiroshi (54) — known as one of the entertainment world’s most dedicated campers — announced on X that trouble had broken out over the production of a “campfire stand.” The uproar has drawn major attention online.

Well, it's hard to call an entirely different structure "his own idea."

Truly, an idea alone can't take shape,
and skill alone can't stand on its own —
it's only when the two come together that something's actually made.

What he had doesn't even rise to the level of an "idea" in product-development terms — it's more like a customer's vague wish list.
Needless to say, there's zero originality in it.

I feel like some YouTubers and influencers have started acting like the old mass media used to.
They seem to have convinced themselves that with their reach, they can steer public opinion however they like.

This time too, he hinted at releasing the LINE chats while asking the public to judge whether he was in the wrong —
as if he were confident that revealing the messages would prove him right.
If the manufacturer hadn't pushed back, there's a good chance public perception would've been manipulated and the company unilaterally cast as the villain.
It's basically the same playbook the old media used to run — except this time it was an individual wielding his own reach, and it didn't work.
    43AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:24
Manufacturer: "Can't make the exact same thing, huh… well then, different size or material should be fine."

    47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:30
    Re: #39
That contract effectively bans the manufacturer from ever making it again — it seizes the IP outright.
If anything it's worse than just "hand over the IP for this one item" — it's an outrageous clause that could block every existing product the company makes.
    50AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:33
    Re: #47
Non-exercise of moral rights is nothing like transferring all rights.
That wouldn't let anyone block the manufacturer's IP, would it?
Non-exercise of moral rights just means the manufacturer agrees not to assert those rights against Hiroshi —
it's not something Hiroshi can turn around and use against the manufacturer.

    Re: #100
    From the Nikkan Sports article:
"It states that the intellectual property rights belong not to me but to the other party — and that even the blueprints belong to the other party."

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The point of contention was how to interpret the contract’s clause on the “non-exercise of the author’s moral rights.” Opinions in the thread split between those who read it as “a clause that strips the manufacturer of all its rights” and those making the legal point that “non-exercise of moral rights is different from transferring copyright — the manufacturer’s own rights don’t change.” Moral rights (such as the right of attribution and the right to preserve integrity) are, by nature, non-transferable; a non-exercise clause is simply a promise by the rights holder not to assert those claims. According to reports, the original contract only said something like “we won’t make the same product,” but the conflict is said to have started when clauses were later added stating “no versions in different sizes or materials either” and “non-exercise of the author’s moral rights, with compensation included in the manufacturing cost.” It’s worth noting that, as of this writing, there’s been no final legal conclusion on how much of Hiroshi’s “idea contribution” actually counts as intellectual property, and the two sides’ accounts still don’t line up.

    Background and Talking Points

Jumangoku Manju is a long-established Saitama confection famous for its ad slogan “So good, too good” (“umai, umasugiru”), and the “So good! TOO good!!!” reply in the thread is a direct callback to that catchphrase. According to the article, the official online store is currently temporarily suspended, which appears to be fueling demand for resold buns priced above retail. The thread also raised the question of whether reselling snacks requires a food hygiene qualification — though reselling unopened, unprocessed products generally doesn’t require one in Japan, a point the original article doesn’t address. Commenters also brought up reselling issues with similar sweets, suggesting this isn’t a problem unique to Jumangoku Manju.

  • Is Anime-Original Content Evil? 5ch: “What’s Even the Point of Watching Without It?”

Ever since Demon Slayer became a hit, there’s been a growing trend of treating anime-original content (“ani-ori”) as a disrespectful “ruination” of the source material — or so argued a thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (“Live Anything” board). There was once a time when anime-original episodes were just standard practice, as with Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh!, and the thread buzzed with takes like: if Spy x Family’s movie had stuck strictly to the manga instead of going original, it might have earned even more at the box office — and how Detective Conan occupies a uniquely strange position, churning out anime-original theatrical hits every single year despite having relatively little source material to draw from. Opinions on the merits of anime-original content split into two camps — some said it all comes down to the creators’ “resolution” (skill and vision), others said anime-original content shouldn’t exist at all — and the debate never really converged.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:43

    3AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:44
Dragon Ball was basically all anime-original filler.
    6AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:45
Things really changed after Demon Slayer.
"Anime-original = evil" just became the vibe.
    9AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:47
    Re: #6
And sure enough, when Demon Slayer itself added anime-original parts, it got dragged too.
    10AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:48

If Spy x Family's movie had adapted the manga instead of going anime-original, it probably would've cleared 10 billion yen.
    12AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:49
    Re: #10
If they'd done the luxury liner arc, it probably would've done Chainsaw Man-level box office.
    35AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:57
    Re: #10
If they'd turned the season 2 material into a movie, the popularity would've lasted way longer… lol
    19AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:52
When you think about it, Detective Conan is just bizarre.
It scores a huge anime-original movie hit every single year.
    27AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:54
    Re: #19
Looking at Dragon Ball and Spy x Family, I really don't get how Conan pulls that off.
    28AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:55
"The manga's good, so let's animate it" → no anime-original content.
"The manga's not that great, so let's boost it with an anime adaptation" → anime-original content.
That's really all there is to it.
    30AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:55
    Re: #28
But if the manga's not that great, maybe just don't animate it at all.
    34AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:57
    Re: #28
What's bad is when the anime staff roll in with a "I read the manga, it's boring, so I'll make it good, lol" attitude and just wreck the source material.
The old 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime was seriously like this.
    40AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:00
Reiwa-era Bleach readers be like: "Ohh yeah, this anime-original content is amazing~ 😍"

    Why though.
    48AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:03
    Re: #40
But with Demon Slayer, everyone kept saying "don't pad the runtime with anime-original filler!"
    46AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:03
If there's no anime-original content, what's even the point of watching the anime?
    51AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:04
    Re: #46
Uh, you get voice acting and animation?
    52AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:04
    Re: #46
If it were pointless, Demon Slayer and Chiikawa movies wouldn't be that popular.
    50AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:04
Doing anime-original content is fine in itself — the problem is doing it without respect for the source material and then flopping hard.
Old Gonzo anime used to be pretty rough about this.
    55AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:06
    Re: #50
Gonzo was infamous for half-assing licensed work specifically to free up budget for their own original projects.
    56AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:06
Can we just not animate it until the manga's finished?
    58AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:08
    Re: #56
One Piece is getting rebooted and it's not even finished…
    61AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:10
Honestly, if a super famous director makes it, ignoring the source material gets a pass.
If Anno made it and slapped "Shin" in the title, that'd be fine, right? Miyazaki's Nausicaä gets praised to death too.
    67AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:13
    Re: #61
Miyazaki IS the original creator of Nausicaä, and he was still a nobody at that point, just so you know.
    65AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:13
Before Demon Slayer, manga movie adaptations were basically nothing but anime-original content, so it was a total game changer.
    89AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:25
    Re: #65
Even Oda-kun (One Piece's creator) is now getting manga-canon episodes turned into movies.
    68AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:14
Anime-original content runs the gamut — from completely rewriting the plot and letting original characters run wild, to episodes that skillfully fill in gaps the source material left.
It really comes down to the creators' vision.
    74AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:18
    Re: #68
Bardock and Broly, who are now totally accepted as part of the canon, started out as anime-original too.

But in most cases, it just turns to garbage because some talentless staffer decided to inject their own ego.
    71AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:16
    Re: #70
So how was Ribbon Hero, which was supposed to take over that timeslot afterward…?
    75AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:18
    Re: #71
That's probably unrelated, given the production timeline.
    84AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:22
There was a time I thought that way too, but
JoJo Part 3's "picture-show" animation (slang for cheap, static, panel-like visuals) was so pacing-killing that I ended up thinking you're better off just reading the manga.
    95AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:29
    Re: #84
JoJo blew up thanks to Parts 1 and 2 being well received, and then, lol, Part 3 — the main event everyone was waiting for — turned out badly and the hype died down.
    91AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:26
Jujutsu Kaisen worked because the Okkotsu arc fit a movie runtime perfectly.
Frieren, though… doesn't seem to have anything like that, lol.
    97AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:30
    Re: #91
The problem is everything after the Macht fight has just been unnecessary padding.
    94AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:29
I honestly can't think of a recent anime-original movie that was a huge success.
    Pretty much just Conan.
    99AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:31
    Re: #94
I mean, Oda-kun's One Piece movies get mocked in comparison to Demon Slayer, but box-office-wise they're absolute legends.

Though since he's so involved in them, they might not strictly count as anime-original.
    103AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:33
Honestly it makes you wonder why they even bothered with anime-original episodes and movies back in the day.
    107AnonymousSep 5, 2026 18:37
    Re: #103
Simply because the anime catches up to the manga, and the original creator doesn't have time to write a whole screenplay just for a movie.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is that Demon Slayer’s anime adaptation closely followed the structure of its source material and was highly praised, which led later works to increasingly be judged on how faithfully they stuck to the original. That said, historically speaking, there are plenty of examples — like Dragon Ball’s Bardock and Broly — where elements that started out as anime-original later became accepted as staple characters or episodes, so it isn’t as simple as “anime-original = bad.” It’s also worth keeping in mind that Detective Conan’s yearly success with anime-original theatrical films comes down to a production reality: the anime’s broadcast runtime far outpaces the manga’s serialization pace, forcing the studio to fill the gap with original material — a structural situation that makes it hard to compare directly with other manga-based anime.

※This article was compiled and summarized from a 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread titled “Source-material purists say “We don’t need anime-original stuff, just stick to the manga!” — yeah, about that, lol.”
