  • Is Dropping Out of University the Same as a High School Diploma? HR Workers Can’t Agree

Someone introduces themselves as “a dropout of University X,” and gets the reply: “So basically you’re just a high school grad.” That framing touched off a debate on 5channel’s Nanidemo Jikkyo G board (a general-discussion board on 5ch, the huge Japanese forum network formerly known as 2channel). Does dropping out of a prestigious university actually rate higher than a high school diploma — or does it just make you look like “someone who can’t see things through to the end”? Several posters claiming to work in HR weighed in, and opinion split right down the middle. The thread also raised examples of celebrities who call themselves “University X dropouts” without ever being treated as merely high-school-educated, plus claims that correspondence universities are actually harder to graduate from than regular ones — turning into a wider conversation about the gap between how people report their education and what that really means.

Why get so mad about it? Why can't you just admit you're a high school grad?
    4AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:21
If you were the one hiring, which would you pick — a high school grad, or someone who dropped out of a famous university?
    11AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:29
    Re: #4
I assume you mean a high school grad who could've gotten into that famous university anyway, right? Then obviously the high school grad.
    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:35
    Re: #4
In Japan pretty much anyone who gets admitted can graduate — so dropping out at all means something pretty serious happened.

Yeah, fair — it does mean the guy couldn't manage to graduate even after years of trying, and Japanese universities are easy to graduate from to begin with.

Back in Horiemon's generation (Takafumi Horie, the famous entrepreneur and Todai dropout), maybe there was this idea that quitting school to start a company while still enrolled was 'cool.' Dunno though.

Speaking as someone in HR: unless it's a seriously elite school, dropouts tend to have a habit of running away from things, so we don't want to hire them.

I know a dropout who eventually finished his degree through the Open University of Japan (a distance-learning school). I always think — it definitely would've been easier just to stay enrolled the first time.

    Re: #21
Apparently graduating from a correspondence program is insanely hard. Even Keio (one of Japan's top private universities) has a correspondence division anyone can join, but almost nobody actually manages to graduate. So actually finishing one is supposedly rated pretty highly.

I mean, Tamori (the famous longtime TV host) dropped out of Waseda and nobody treats him as 'just a high school grad.' Same with Ueda and Arita from the comedy duo Cream — one's a Waseda dropout, the other's from Rikkyo — neither gets written off as high-school-only either.

That's not necessarily true. If that were the case, why would recommendation admissions even exist?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Japanese universities are widely seen as far more selective at the entrance-exam stage than at graduation, meaning dropping out doesn’t require a scandal or financial hardship — it can simply happen. That’s likely why, even among HR professionals, how a dropout gets weighed varies so widely depending on the prestige of the school and how easy the reason for leaving is to explain away. The thread surfaced two competing views side by side — “a dropout from an elite university rates higher than a high school grad” versus “dropping out signals a habit of running away and rates lower” — highlighting that there’s no shared standard. It’s also probably not widely known outside Japan that correspondence (distance-learning) universities are considered harder to actually graduate from than in-person ones. And when a celebrity describes themselves as a “University X dropout,” that isn’t résumé padding — they’re simply stating the fact that they enrolled and later left — though that distinction is easy to lose track of in debates like this one.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Nanidemo Jikkyo G) thread “Dropout: ‘I dropped out of University X.’ Me: ‘Oh, so you’re a high school grad.’ Dropout: ‘No! I dropped out!’ …I mean, come on.”

  • Hiroyuki: “If You Send Your Kid to International School, Be Ready to Give Up on Japanese Companies” — Reactions Split

Businessman Hiroyuki posted on his official X account that parents who send their children to international schools “need to be ready to give up the chance of their kids getting a job at a Japanese company” by stepping outside Japan’s education system. In response, on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, arguments flew in multiple directions — counterpoints that international school graduates can still get into Japanese universities, opinions that clinging to today’s Japanese companies (amid a weak yen and a wave of buyouts) is actually the riskier bet, and comments pointing out that kids raised in international schools tend to “not read the room” and develop a different sensibility. The thread ended up split on the very premise of Hiroyuki’s claim.

    Sat, Sep 5, 3:10 PM

Businessman Hiroyuki Nishimura (49) updated his official X account by September 5th, commenting on parents who send their children to international schools.

Hiroyuki posted: “Once you go the route of ‘stepping outside Japan’s education system and raising your kid at an international school,’ you need to be prepared to give up your child’s chance of landing a job at a Japanese company.”

Sure, they can still get into a Japanese university, but going to international school during those formative childhood years really does give you a different mindset from other Japanese people.
Japanese companies probably care about that kind of thing too, and honestly, even if they do get hired, I feel like it'd be rough for them.
My nephew and niece go to international school, and there's just something off about them —
    they feel like foreign kids.
Like, they don't read the room… or maybe it's more that they're really assertive?……
Also they're emotional and their body language is weirdly intense.

    20AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:12
You can still get into a Japanese university from international school, and being able to speak at least some English probably opens up more options than coming out of Japanese middle/high school barely able to speak any English at all.
    76AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:27
    Re: #20
When it comes to English, if you can just speak it, the market's saturated — there are too many speakers already.
Being fluent in business English is a different story, but even among native speakers that's rare.
Either way, just going to international school leaves you stuck in a half-baked middle ground.
    21AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:14
Japanese universities weight English scores double, so it's easier to get in that way — but it's the kind of thing that doesn't actually work in your favor once you're at a company.

The reason Japanese companies hire foreigners is
so they can use them for business in that person's home country.
If a Japanese person just learns English at international school, there's no value in that —

An American guy who works as a local radio DJ (born in Yokosuka, a native Japanese speaker) said on his show that elementary school in Japan is fine, but from middle school onward he's worried about things like history education teaching something different from what he'd want them to learn, so he thinks kids should be sent to American schools or international schools instead.
    92AnonymousSep 5, 2026 17:47

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Hiroyuki himself lives in France with his wife and child, having chosen to educate his own kids abroad — this post is seen as a personal opinion coming from that position. The thread split mainly over two points. First was the validity of the premise itself: several commenters pointed out that international school graduates can still go on to Japanese universities, so it’s a stretch to say they’d “completely give up” their chance at employment. Second was the value of sticking with Japanese companies in the first place — pointing to buyouts by foreign capital and slowing growth, a number of opposing voices argued that clinging to Japanese companies alone is actually the riskier choice. One thing readers can easily misunderstand is that international schools in Japan aren’t all the same — some are internationally accredited, others cater to a narrower audience, and the reality of post-graduation paths and English proficiency can’t be judged from a single thread comment. Likewise, “Japanese companies” cover everything from traditional domestic firms to foreign-affiliated global corporations, so how they’re viewed in the job market isn’t uniform either.

    Background and Discussion Points

Senburi tea is an herbal tea that’s been used as a stomach remedy since the Edo period, so intensely bitter it’s practically the poster child for the saying “good medicine tastes bitter.” On TV variety shows, its bitterness has repeatedly been used as a reliable little gag to draw out a performer’s genuine, unguarded reaction. Opinions in the thread were split on whether this challenge was a punishment game or something Ebata chose to do herself — worth noting that, absent any confirmed comment from Ebata herself, this remains speculation. Some posts also mentioned that senburi tea had come up in a different segment involving the same group before, suggesting this kind of reaction bit has recurred repeatedly within Hello! Project.

  • Yoshiyuki Tomino’s “Games Are Evil” Remark Draws a Wave of Pushback — 5ch: “Creating Gundam Ranks Among Humanity’s Worst Sins”

A thread appeared on the Hardware/Industry (“Geha”) board introducing a remark reportedly made in 2009 by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of Gundam: “Games are evil. They’re a waste of energy, they destroy the environment, and they only drag down humanity’s productivity.” Since this coincided with the announcement of a new Gundam game, some pointed out the apparent contradiction — why is he fine with his own creation being turned into games? Others corrected the record, noting that Tomino doesn’t actually hold the rights to Gundam game adaptations and only appears in the credits thanks to his moral rights as the original creator. From there, the discussion broadened into a general debate over whether all entertainment shares the same structure.

    1AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:33
To me, games are evil. Because it's not an activity that supports daily life.
And games using today's electronic tools are just burning energy — once you're talking about selling hardware to tens of millions, hundreds of millions, even a billion people,
the act of selling the hardware itself is evil. There's nothing eco about it at all.
    3AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:35
Old Baldy [Tomino's famous nickname] has always hated games —

Re: #5 is basically a straight-up dig at Nintendo.
Tomino's remark was made in 2009, so time-wise it's clearly aimed at the Wii/DS era.
Nintendo was touting "expanding the gaming population," but from Tomino's point of view, Nintendo let marketing lead instead of making games that actually entertain people.
Sure enough, games made in that era got remade for Switch and players turned their backs on them.

Hideo Kojima made a similarly sharp criticism, calling it "a crisis of creativity."

    Re: #45
There's no "making it big" here — Director Tomino doesn't hold the rights to Gundam at all…
He has no rights to the anime adaptations, the games, none of it.
The only reason he's in the credits is his moral rights as the original creator.
    47AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:07

He's saying this assuming industry people will read his piece
so basically he's only talking to creators, not players.

Industry people mock this content too —
there are several serious flaws in it,
    the biggest being:
"At the end of the day it's just hardware getting more powerful — show me a game that's actually fundamentally new."

By that logic you could say anything: "every story is just a rehash of myths written thousands of years ago,"
or "there's no such thing as a fundamentally new human being, so humanity should just go extinct."
And of course, by that same standard, this old man making anime is completely pointless too.

Even by Showa-era standards, Great Master Baldy [Tomino] is a pretty eccentric guy.

    Background and Key Points

The remark is said to have been made in 2009, and some in the thread pointed out it was made at CEDEC (a conference for game developers). There are mainly two points of contention. One is the apparent contradiction between denouncing games while the timing overlapped with the announcement of a new Gundam game. The other is the fact — corrected multiple times within the thread — that Tomino himself doesn’t hold the rights to Gundam’s anime or game adaptations, and only appears in the credits through his moral rights as the original creator. A point readers can easily misread is treating this remark as a simple “criticism of the game industry,” when the text alone doesn’t convey that Tomino made the comment while acknowledging his own anime work could be judged by that very same standard.

  • Manga you didn’t know ran in Weekly Shonen Jump: 5ch says ‘Barefoot Gen was originally meant to be a battle manga’

A thread rounding up manga that surprise people once they learn they actually ran in Weekly Shonen Jump — titles like “Barefoot Gen” and “Gutsy Frog.” One after another, works came up that are strongly associated with other magazines or that nobody ever thinks about in terms of which magazine serialized them, including City Hunter, Cat’s Eye, Midori no Makibao, Astro Kyudan, Samurai Giants, and Death Note. Opinions were especially split over “Barefoot Gen”: one comment pointed out that at the start of its run it wasn’t meant as peace education at all but was on a battle/gag-manga track, while others pushed back that given the author’s intent, it’s a stretch to claim the work was ever free of political overtones.

    104AnonymousSep 5, 2026 16:44
    Re: #91

Looks like it ended pretty fast though… 😢

    Background and points of debate

“Barefoot Gen” began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1973. While it drew on the author’s own wartime experience from the start, its early chapters carried battle-manga and gag-manga elements. After its run in Jump ended, the series moved to other outlets such as “Shimin” and “Bunka Hyoron,” and it was there that its anti-war, anti-nuclear message grew stronger. The thread’s disagreement boiled down to a single question: did the series carry political intent from the very start of its serialization? One camp argued that, since the work is grounded in the author’s lived experience, its political character can’t be separated out even from the beginning; the other argued that its style shifted only after it changed magazines. Also striking is the gap with today’s image of Jump — cases like “City Hunter” and “Cat’s Eye,” where the magazine’s image doesn’t match its actual readership, and Showa-era hot-blooded sports manga like “Astro Kyudan” and “Samurai Giants” that once ran there too.

  • Foreign Men Pepper-Sprayed and Robbed in Osaka’s Nishinari — 5ch: “lol they used a translation app”

On the night of September 4, in a shopping street in Taishi 1-chome, Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, two foreign nationals noticed three men were following them. When they asked “why are you following us,” they were sprayed with tear gas and had money demanded from them in an attempted robbery. The men escaped into an open pachinko parlor, and the three suspects remain at large. Since the victims couldn’t speak Japanese, police used a translation app to communicate with them, and that’s how it was determined the men had been demanding money — a detail that caught fire on 5ch. The thread split between posters voicing their sense of Nishinari’s bad reputation and locals pushing back that it’s overblown.

An attempted robbery occurred yesterday (the 4th) at night at a pachinko parlor in Nishinari Ward, Osaka City, in which two foreign men were sprayed with tear gas by three men and had money demanded of them. The three men remain at large.

The incident took place at a pachinko parlor in Taishi 1-chome, Nishinari Ward, Osaka City. At around 5:13 p.m. yesterday, the two foreign men were chased by three men and fled into the pachinko parlor, which was open for business.

Before the incident, the two men had eaten a meal and then entered the shopping street, where they grew suspicious of three men standing around. When the three began following them, the men fled into the pachinko parlor.

Not many people realize this, but it's right next to Tezukayama — just walk down the slope and you're already in Nishinari.
People from outside Osaka might not immediately place the name Tezukayama, but locally it's known as an upscale residential area.
That's because of the Uemachi Fault escarpment — walk down that slope and the whole atmosphere flips completely.
I get why people from other prefectures picture the area south of Shin-Imamiya Station or around Haginochaya Station when they hear "Nishinari."
By the way, that area's commonly known as Kamagasaki.

    Read the article.
The pachinko parlor was just where the victims happened to flee to.

    Background and Talking Points

Nishinari Ward, formerly known as Kamagasaki, is known as a day-laborer district and public safety concerns there come up often, but an image circulating in the thread claiming to show “Osaka Prefecture Crime Trends 2025” was an unsourced, unverified statistical claim, so it wasn’t used in this article. In fact, comments about the area’s perceived safety split between those saying “this kind of thing is happening all over Japan” and those insisting “Osaka’s Nishinari is uniquely bad,” with neither side offering objective backing. It’s also worth noting that the victims couldn’t speak Japanese and had to communicate via translation app — a real, practical hurdle facing foreign residents and visitors who become crime victims, one that’s easy for Japanese speakers to overlook. And Nishinari Ward is separated from upscale residential areas like Tezukayama by nothing more than a slope, so painting the whole area with one “danger zone” brush can be misleading.

  • Morning Musume。’26’s Oda Sakura Graduation Concert Confirmed for Yokohama Arena

Breaking news hit the 5ch Hello! Project board that the venue for Morning Musume。’26’s Oda Sakura graduation concert has been set as Yokohama Arena. The thread immediately buzzed with unconfirmed reports that Juice=Juice — which also has a member set to graduate around the same time — would hold its own graduation concert at the same arena, making it a “2-day” run, though nothing about this was ever confirmed and the speculation ran well ahead of the facts. The conversation eventually drifted from the venue’s size itself to comparisons of drawing power and big-venue track records across other groups like Juice=Juice and ANGERME, spiraling into arguments about the pecking order between Hello! Project groups and heated exchanges between fanbases.

At this rate, if there's ever a Hello! Project show at K Arena (Yokohama's newer, even bigger arena), Juice=Juice would be the only group with the drawing power to pull it off.

Though that would upend the group pecking order, so a K Arena show probably won't happen at all.

Maybe they figured there'd be a separate big-venue show apart from the tour finale?

    Background and Talking Points

In Hello! Project fandom, the scale of a graduation concert venue is often treated as a direct measure of a group’s or member’s “rank,” and the pecking order among venues like Budokan, Yokohama Arena, and Pacifico Yokohama is a constant topic of fan debate. This time, with Juice=Juice’s tour finale already locked in at Pia Arena MM and apparently without any additional shows planned, frustration surfaced over the fact that Morning Musume。’26 — a group with comparable drawing power — secured Yokohama Arena while Juice=Juice reportedly can’t land a big-venue show of its own. The claim posted in the thread that “Danbara’s graduation concert will also be at Yokohama Arena, making it a 2-day event” came from a poster claiming insider knowledge, but it remains unverified, and other posters responded with skepticism. Arguments over relative drawing power and “rank” between groups are a long-simmering fixture of Hello! Project fan discourse, and this venue announcement reignited that debate once again.

  • ANGERME’s full-group outings have plummeted — 5ch: “Takeuchi’s departure seems to be a big deal”

A thread about Hello! Project idol group ANGERME lit up over the observation that “the members don’t all go out together anymore.” The group was once known for outings where the whole lineup would head to the beach, USJ, or Disney together, but with the graduations of core members like Takeuchi, Kamikoku (Kamiko), and Kawamura (Kawamu), some suggested there’s no one left to organize such plans. Thread posters were split on whether the group’s current senior members — Ise, Hashisako, Kawana, and Tamenaga — could fill that role.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

ANGERME is a Hello! Project girl group, and graduated members like Takeuchi, Kamikoku, and Kawamura have a history of frequently sharing posts about inviting members out on private outings. It’s worth noting that whether or not the group still goes on “full-group outings” is only knowable to fans through what gets shared on social media or in magazines — anything happening off the record simply can’t be confirmed. While several posters pointed out that it was the graduated members who used to organize these plans, there’s little solid basis for declaring the current members’ relationships good or bad, and the discussion mostly centered on speculation tied to scheduling skills and theories about leadership.

  • Liella!’s ‘Sports Day’ Event Has No Live Performance — Fans Say It Just Dethroned the ‘Legendary Flop’

On September 5, the content of the “Sports Day” event held by Liella! (from Love Live! Superstar!!) became a hot topic on 5ch. There was no live segment (song performances), and pricing was set at 8,500 yen for regular tickets plus 12,500 yen for “upgrade” seats, with a stream of live-reports claiming the proceedings were disorganized and that member Sagara had to keep holding things together on the spot. In the thread, many people compared it to the “Hakodate Unit Carnival” (all seats reserved, 8,800 yen), long dubbed a “legendary flop event” for its thin content, and the discussion heated up around the idea that this Sports Day had easily surpassed it. Meanwhile, some attendees who watched from S seats posted comments of satisfaction, so opinions were split.

By the way, same venue as a Shiny Colors event —
probably Shiny Colors drew about 4,000, so Liella! pulled around 3,500.

    Background and Points of Discussion

The “Hakodate Unit Carnival” was a solo event Liella! held in the past, and due to its thin content it had long been talked about among fans as a “legendary flop event.” This time’s Sports Day skipped the live song segment entirely and instead offered separate photo-op “upgrade” seats for 12,500 yen, drawing concentrated criticism over pricing. In the thread, there were repeated reports that the proceedings were disorganized and that one member kept having to hold things together, while some attendees who watched from S seats posted comments of satisfaction — suggesting opinions may vary depending on seating and viewing conditions. Given rising prices and shifting production costs, it’s also hard to make a simple monetary comparison with an event from several years ago. It’s worth noting that this assessment rests on fragmentary live-reports posted on social media, and the thread’s posts alone don’t confirm the event’s full structure or intent.

  • US Magazine Ranks All 10 ‘Planet of the Apes’ Films — 5ch Users Insist Nothing Tops the Original’s Ending

Entertainment Weekly’s ranking of all 10 films in the “Planet of the Apes” series drew a strong reaction on 5ch’s entertainment/sports news board (Geinou/Supo Sokuho+). The most common view in the thread was that nothing tops the shock of the ending of the original 1968 film (the shot of the Statue of Liberty buried in the sand) — with some pointing out that calling it “the origin and the peak” is itself a backhanded compliment. Meanwhile, some argued for the mutants’ worship of a nuclear bomb in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes,” and there was discussion over whether popular claims about original author Pierre Boulle’s background were true, making the thread more than just nostalgic reminiscing.

    September 5, 2026

The “Planet of the Apes” franchise now spans 10 films, starting with the original in 1968. Because entries have been released in sporadic bursts over the decades, newcomers can easily get lost trying to figure out where to start. Against that backdrop, Entertainment Weekly has now ranked all 10 films.

The first five films are connected as one long continuous story. Cornelius and Zira, the apes who helped the human protagonist in the 1968 original, board a spaceship in the third film, “Escape from the Planet of the Apes,” and travel to Earth in 1973. In the fourth film, “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,” their son Caesar leads an uprising of apes who had been enslaved by humans.

Honestly, a single cobalt bomb wiping out the entire 🌍 was a bit of a stretch.

    It's ranked #9, apparently —
makes me think they just don't get it.
    Re: #50
Blowing up the whole planet was overkill.
Supposedly that was done on purpose so they couldn't make yet another sequel —
I think it might've been one of Charlton Heston's conditions.

"The origin and the peak" — that's not really a compliment, is it?
It just means it peaked at the very start.
Same goes for the Hannibal Lecter ("Silence of the Lambs") series.

I love the part in "Beneath" where the mutants take their masks off after singing.

That's the scene where they reveal their true faces (like burn scars) to their god (the nuclear bomb).
    I love it too.

    IT'S A HUUUMAN!

EEE-EEE! (a callback to the classic ape-costume comedy bit from the old Drifters variety sketches)

Nice one, Rabbit Sekine (comedian famous for that ape-costume gag).

    The ending of "Conquest" —
    Caesar's speech was so badass.
    27AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:12
The Tim Burton one was the worst.

    Re: #27
I went in already knowing it got panned, so it turned out more enjoyable than expected.
    28AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:14
Because of Oyamada, the name "Cornelius" got tainted (musician Keigo Oyamada, who performs as Cornelius, was hit by a bullying scandal).
    29AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:14
    The Tim Burton one…
it kind of feels like a movie made for the era of a Trump presidency.
    30AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:15
Judging by the ending of the last film in the original series,
I guess it eventually became a world where 🐵 and humans coexist.
    31AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:15
Wait, seriously — it's about "yellow monkeys" (a slur historically used against Asians)?
    32AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:17
I love the one where they time-slip to modern-day America — it plays like a New Hollywood-style fugitive chase movie.
    33AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:18
Apparently the apes are supposed to represent the Japanese —
guess we have the America-worshipping political parties to thank for that.

    Re: #1
The author of "Planet of the Apes," Pierre Boulle, was taken prisoner by the Japanese military during the war, and the novel was based on that real experience.

At its core, it's basically a novel that's a lump of hatred.

As for the "great ape" that shows up later in the story…

It's too outrageous to even write out!

His other novel, "The Bridge on the River Kwai," was also blatantly written from the perspective of how white people of that era viewed Asians — honestly unreadable.

    Re: #35
    That's completely wrong.
The ones who captured Boulle were French Indochina (Vichy) forces.

    Re: #35
Apparently that was actually a false claim spread by film critic Tomohiro Machiyama.
    76AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:50
So the "did the Earth actually explode on screen in Beneath the Planet of the Apes" debate that broke out on the old 2channel movie board 20 years ago is still going, huh.
I'm in the camp that says the TV broadcast of "Beneath" did show the explosion — I saw the scene where the model Earth floating in space blew apart.

    Re: #76
I remember the opening of "Dawn of the Dead" (released in Japan as "Zombie") had a planet exploding.
    77AnonymousSep 5, 2026 15:50
Paul Williams is also sometimes called "the white Planet of the Apes," isn't he.

The president of Death Records (from "Phantom of the Paradise").

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Planet of the Apes” is an irregular franchise that has produced new entries sporadically since the original 1968 film, and it’s a body of work divisive enough that rankings like Entertainment Weekly’s latest one get published periodically. The view that recurred throughout the thread — that the Statue of Liberty twist in the first film is so powerful it overshadows everything else — is a well-worn take that has been repeated throughout film history, not a new observation. Meanwhile, a popular but unfounded claim circulating online holds that original author Pierre Boulle was a prisoner of the Japanese military during the war; in fact, he was reportedly captured by forces of the Vichy-aligned French Indochina regime, and the thread’s correction on this point is accurate. It’s also worth noting, to avoid confusion, that the ape character “Cornelius” in the films shares his name only coincidentally with the musician Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada), who later stepped back from public activity — the two are unrelated.
