  • Over 50% of Men Under 30 Have ‘Zero Dating Experience’ — 5ch Fires Back: ‘Normal Guys Date and Marry Just Fine’

Marriage researcher Kazuhisa Arakawa, writing for Toyo Keizai Online, presented data showing that more than half of men under 30 have zero romantic experience, and explored why young people are “canceling” not just marriage, but romance itself. When the article was reposted to 5ch’s News Express+ board, it drew a wide range of responses — skepticism about the statistics, pushback along the lines of “normal guys who go to college and get jobs date and marry just fine,” and personal anecdotes touching on how hard it is to confess your feelings and the financial risks of divorce. Since romantic experience varies so much from person to person, the thread ended up dominated by posters pointing out the gap between the statistics and their own lived experience.

Genuine question for anyone who actually knows this stuff —
with the falling birthrate, will small and mid-size sash (window/door frame) manufacturers in rural areas lose business? Go under?

You should get some dating experience while you're young. A woman's market value drops with age, but her standards rise in inverse proportion. Back in school she'd be thrilled if you just treated her to McDonald's or Saizeriya, but once she's an adult she gets mad unless you take her somewhere expensive.

Confessing out of nowhere in real life just makes you a boundary-ignoring weirdo.
When an average person copies the moves of some high-spec hot guy or beautiful heroine from a romcom manga, of course they get treated like a boundary-ignoring weirdo in real life — that's fiction, not reality.

Normally, before confessing, you invite her to a private one-on-one meal or outing first, to feel out whether there's any interest.
If she keeps turning you down — even with a smile, even citing 'bad timing' — that means there's no interest.

If there IS interest, even when she says 'not that day,' she'll come back with 'but how about this day?' and name a specific date herself so she doesn't lose the chance.

A real-life confession is something you only attempt after you've built up a relationship of going to private one-on-one meals or outings together several times.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Worth keeping in mind as context: Kazuhisa Arakawa is a marriage/singles researcher who has been consistently putting out commentary on this exact theme. The rise in the rate of zero romantic experience has itself been flagged periodically in official statistics too, such as the government’s Basic Survey on Birth Trends, and this Toyo Keizai piece appears to be part of that ongoing narrative. Where the thread split was between posters who blame the lack of experience on “young people’s own passivity” and those who point to “environmental factors, like the difficulty of confessing feelings or shifting expectations from women.” Several posts also raised worries about asset division and severance pay in divorce — a point that isn’t obvious from the original article alone, showing how the conversation about avoiding romance runs straight into wariness about marriage itself. What exactly “zero romantic experience” means in the statistics was never pinned down in the thread, and that ambiguity may be part of what’s driving the gap between the numbers and people’s gut sense of reality.

  • Ryusei Ryo to Join Kazunari Ninomiya’s Agency ‘Office Nino’ — Bond Forged on the Set of VIVANT

Actor Ryusei Ryo (33) is set to join, or enter into a business partnership with, Office Nino — the personal talent agency founded by former Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya (43) — according to reporting by Josei Seven. Ryusei is reportedly leaving Ken-On, the agency he had belonged to for 16 years, and the two are said to have grown close on the set of the drama VIVANT, in which they co-starred. On the forum, opinions were divided over the circumstances of the move — whether Ryusei left Ken-On of his own accord or at the agency’s request — as well as over Ninomiya’s chops as an agency boss and assessments of Ryusei’s acting ability.

Ninomiya's the most successful of all the ex-Johnny's talents, so yeah, that tracks

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

After Arashi went on hiatus, Kazunari Ninomiya left the Johnny’s agency (now STARTO Entertainment) and founded his own personal agency, Office Nino. Since revelations of sexual abuse committed by the agency’s founder against talent under its roof came to light, a wave of former Johnny’s-affiliated performers has moved to set up independent agencies, and Ryusei Ryo’s reported move is seen as part of that broader trend. On the forum, opinions split over whether Ryusei chose to leave Ken-On — where he’d spent 16 years — on his own initiative, or whether the agency pushed him out. Ken-On is known as a major agency, so a departure from it is unusual in itself, which fueled the speculation. It’s also worth noting, since it’s easy to misread, that this development does not signal an Arashi reunion or revived unit activity — it’s strictly about a move to, or partnership with, a personal agency.

  • Bystander who broke arm colliding with officer during Abe shooting: Nara Prefecture settles for ¥39 million — 5ch: “That amount is insane”

Renewed attention has focused on the July 2022 shooting assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, after it emerged that a Nara Prefectural Police officer on security duty ran forward immediately after the gunshots and collided with a bystander at the scene, knocking them down and breaking their right hand. On the 9th, Nara Prefecture announced it would pay roughly ¥39 million in damages to the victim and settle the matter, and said it would submit a supplementary budget bill covering the payout to the September regular prefectural assembly session. On 5ch, comments poured in saying things like “That’s a crazy amount for just a broken bone” and “Sounds like there might be lasting aftereffects,” sparking debate over whether the payout is reasonable and how compensation claims against the state and local governments actually work.

On the 9th, Nara Prefecture announced it would pay approximately ¥39 million in damages and reach a settlement with the victim, after a prefectural police officer collided with and injured a bystander during the shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. A supplementary budget bill including the compensation will be submitted to the September regular prefectural assembly session.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on July 8, 2022, in front of Yamato-Saidaiji Station on the Kintetsu line in Nara City, where former Prime Minister Abe (then 67) was shot and killed.

According to the prefectural police’s security division, the officer on guard duty at the scene ran out immediately after the shots were fired and struck a bystander on the sidewalk, knocking them down. The bystander suffered a serious injury — a broken right hand — and the contents of their bag were also damaged.

    961AnonymousSep 10, 2026 03:01
¥39 million? Honestly, isn't that way too little?🥺

Background and key points of this story

The compensation to the bystander is based on Japan’s State Redress Act, under which Nara Prefecture bears responsibility for damages caused by the actions of an officer on security duty. As for whether the amount is appropriate, it likely factors in more than just treatment costs for a simple fracture — things like lasting disability, pain-and-suffering damages, and lost income — which can make it look far removed from what people typically expect for a broken bone. In the thread, many speculated about the reasoning behind the payout, with comments like “That’s way too much for just a broken bone” and “Maybe there are lasting aftereffects,” while unverified rumors also spread about the identity of a person caught on camera at the scene. It’s worth noting that this announcement concerns compensation to the bystander injured in contact with the officer, and is a separate administrative matter from uncovering the truth of the assassination itself or the progress of the investigation.

Premium hikes for next year are already a done deal.
My insurer jacked up my rate even before my policy renewed, and other big names — the "some Marine," "some Fire," "some Adult"-type insurers (nicknames poking fun at major companies like Tokio Marine and similar) — have reportedly announced hikes regardless of the flooding.
It's not just labor costs either — as cars get more advanced, repair parts get absurdly expensive, so premiums would keep climbing even without any heavy rain at all.

It's called the "Nagoya Central Rainwater Retention Basin" — a tunnel built 50 meters underground starting near Nagoya Castle, designed to nearly eliminate above-floor flooding even in rainfall equivalent to the Tokai Flood (97mm per hour).
They're currently working on the section that discharges into the Nakagawa Canal, aiming for completion by the end of fiscal year 2028.

Hmm, I get that for a road you're seeing for the first time, but
if it's your own neighborhood, you'd think you'd know.

Background and key points of this discussion

Nagoya City’s “Nagoya Central Rainwater Retention Basin,” targeted for completion by the end of fiscal year 2028, is planned as a tunnel running 50 meters underground from near Nagoya Castle, designed to nearly eliminate above-floor flooding even in rainfall equivalent to the Tokai Flood (97mm per hour) — but the section that discharges into the Nakagawa Canal is still under construction and wasn’t ready in time for this event. On the thread, while some voices flatly dismiss driving into flooded underpasses as reckless, others point out that how easily you can spot the danger depends on whether it’s a road you know from daily life or one you’re seeing for the first time, making this harder to reduce to simple self-responsibility. It’s also easy to overlook that heavy rain warnings can leap straight from level 3 to a much higher level without passing through the steps in between, meaning visual judgment alone may not keep up. As for car insurance, some point out that premiums keep climbing regardless of flood damage levels, driven by rising parts costs, so it would be premature to pin future premium hikes solely on this incident’s vehicle count.

  • Games Writer Kawamura Narihiro: “Nintendo Direct Leaves Fans Hanging Again by Withholding Its Biggest Blockbusters”

Yahoo! News gaming contributor Kawamura Narihiro has published a piece on Nintendo’s latest Direct presentation. While praising the strong lineup of announcements — including Portopia Serial Murder Case and Metroid — he called the absence of any brand-new entries in massive franchises like Mario or Super Smash Bros. a letdown. On 5ch’s hardware/industry board, this take drew attention because users pointed out Kawamura hadn’t published a similar reaction piece for Sony’s concurrent State of Play, prompting accusations that he only shows enthusiasm for Nintendo. Others pushed back on the “letdown” framing, noting that the newly revealed Kirby title trended worldwide.

    Expert commentary

Titles like Portopia Serial Murder Case and Metroid genuinely surprised even me, and the lineup was varied enough to reach both core and casual players. With X’s trending topics flooded with “Nintendo Direct” and related keywords (titles), it seems plenty of people came away satisfied.

That said, if you were hoping for brand-new entries in the franchises that represent Nintendo’s public face — like Mario or Smash Bros. — this may well have felt like a letdown. Stock markets and business media, which favor short-term results and predictable strategy, could judge this harshly. That’s arguably the price of carrying such massive franchises: expectations are always sky-high.

Well sure — unlike Smash Bros., which died after Nintendo fanboys hyped it into the ground, Kirby's getting back-to-back releases with Air Riders too.

    Background and points of contention

Kawamura Narihiro is a contributor to Yahoo! News’s “Expert” program, a writer who regularly covers gaming industry topics. Expert articles are published as the individual writer’s personal opinion, and operational details — like whether comments are enabled — are largely invisible to readers; in this thread too, whether it was his own decision remained pure speculation. The real point of contention wasn’t the Direct’s content itself, but the comparison to the fact that Kawamura hadn’t published a similar piece about Sony’s “State of Play,” with opinions split between reading this as “using Nintendo as his only target for criticism” versus “there simply wasn’t anything to write about.” Some posts also cited the previous day’s stock price change, but that’s purely one poster’s own interpretation — the article itself doesn’t actually analyze the stock market’s reaction, a distinction readers could easily conflate.

Following the announcement of Nintendo Switch 2 versions of “Persona 4 Reload” and the latest entry “Persona 6,” X (formerly Twitter) was flooded with comments like “Now I don’t have to buy a PS5.” A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry board picked up on the reaction, with posters debating whether they could think of any PS5-exclusive games worth owning, and whether the Switch 2 version — arriving later — might actually outsell the PS5 version. Some brought up how the delayed Switch 2 port of “Persona 3 Reload” underperformed, fueling a lively discussion.

    PlayStation's role is over

Even Persona 4 and 6, which people said would 'never come,' are coming now — PlayStation's role just keeps shrinking.
Sure there's stuff like frame rate differences, but how much of that gorgeous fidelity PlayStation keeps chasing do players even want?
Strong first-party IP, good sales, so third parties want Switch releases too — Nintendo really is strong.
No real exclusive IP left, consumers don't care, and whatever used to be good about it is gone — PlayStation's role ends with the PS5. Thanks for your service ✨.

    Exactly this (´・ω・`)
They're not console-war fanboys (ゲハ信者), so it's not that they hate PlayStation
they just don't have games they want to play
I said the same thing to Xbox (箱) over and over: 【Western games basically don't sell in Japan at all — the only way forward is more Japanese games】【Normal people don't care about resolution or fps — what matters is whether it's actually fun to play】

Up until now, Nintendo hardware wasn't powerful enough to run the latest third-party titles, so PlayStation sold itself on that difference — but this is the first generation where the latest titles are going multiplatform, and at this rate PlayStation's really going to get eaten alive by the Switch 2
    36AnonymousSep 10, 2026 05:31

On top of that, whether a Switch 2 version was even coming stayed unclear for a while after release

Compared to that, the PS5 is only cheap relatively speaking — it's not actually cheap in absolute terms

If the PS5 had at least matched PS4-era standards in either size or design — even just one of the two —

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The Persona series has long had close ties to PlayStation, but the Switch 2 version of the much-discussed “Persona 3 Reload” arrived as a delayed port released well after launch, and reportedly struggled commercially. In the thread, this precedent fueled comments arguing that “delayed ports don’t sell,” countered by others pointing out that “this time multiplatform release was planned from the start, so the situation is different” — opinions were split. It was also noted that, at current domestic prices, the Switch 2 is in some cases more expensive than the PS5, a reversal of the earlier price gap between the PS4 and the original Switch. Some also pointed out that the series lineup was overhauled starting with Persona 3, creating a divide between the fanbases of 3 and of 4/5. Note that some posts in the thread contained remarks mocking individual posters, so those replies have been excluded from this article.

  • Apple Unveils First Foldable iPhone, the “iPhone Duo” — Starting at ¥364,800; 5ch: “Expensive, sure, but…”

On September 9 (U.S. time), Apple unveiled the “iPhone Duo,” its first foldable iPhone, which opens up to a 7.6-inch display. It was revealed alongside the “iPhone 18 Pro” and “iPhone 18 Pro Max,” with pricing starting at ¥364,800 for the 256GB model and reaching ¥574,800 for the top 2TB model. Pre-orders begin October 16, with release set for October 23. On 5ch’s News Express+ board, discussion swirled around the steep price, the 254g weight, comparisons to rival foldables, and whether the hassle of opening/closing the device is worth it.

On September 9 U.S. time, Apple announced the “iPhone Duo,” the company’s first foldable iPhone. It was shown off alongside the “iPhone 18 Pro” and “iPhone 18 Pro Max” at the company’s fall keynote held in Cupertino, California.

The iPhone Duo has a compact, passport-sized design with a titanium body. According to Apple, when unfolded it’s the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made. It features a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and also supports the Apple Pencil.

With the iPhone Duo, Apple is entering the increasingly competitive foldable smartphone market — one where Samsung, Google, and Motorola, along with Chinese brands like Honor, OPPO, and Huawei, are already major players. Now it looks set to be Apple’s turn to shape the market’s direction and help drive its growth.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

Apple’s entry into foldables comes six years after Samsung launched the original Galaxy Fold in 2019. Google, Motorola, and Chinese brands like Honor, OPPO, and Huawei are already competing on both price and weight, and at ¥364,800 (256GB), the iPhone Duo sits at the high end of the domestic foldable market. In the thread, posts like #97 pointed out the crude exchange-rate math behind “$1,999 = ¥364,800,” with some speculating the price factors in an anticipated weaker yen. At 254g, the weight is roughly in line with existing devices like the Galaxy Fold, and most replies focused on whether the price is justified, alongside usability gripes like the hassle of opening/closing the phone and how the inner camera is handled. There were also mentions of payment plans like the 36-installment option, though the actual sales terms go beyond what the source article covers and would need separate confirmation.

  • iPhone Duo’s 256GB Model Costs ¥364,800 — 5ch: ‘The Yen Just Got Valued at 165 to the Dollar’

Apple’s newly announced foldable “iPhone Duo” has hit Japanese shelves at ¥364,800 for the 256GB model, rising to ¥574,800 for the top-end 2TB version. On 5ch’s live-discussion threads, users zeroed in on the gap between the reported US starting price of $1,999 and the much steeper yen conversion, with many lamenting the weak yen: “The pathetic yen just got valued at 165 to the dollar.” Commenters also compared the price to the rival Galaxy Z Fold8 (roughly ¥260,000 when its Korean won price is converted to yen), and posted plenty of hands-on photos praising the barely visible crease and the under-display camera revealed when the phone is opened.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Apple’s products tend to be heavily affected by exchange rates when priced in yen, year after year, and this Duo is no exception. The “165 yen to the dollar” figure that came up in the thread is a gut-feeling number derived from a simple comparison against the $1,999 US price — worth noting that it’s a different thing from the actual exchange rate and from Apple’s region-by-region pricing logic, which factors in taxes and distribution costs. Likewise, the price gap with the rival Galaxy Z Fold8 is only a reference figure based on converting its won price into yen, and doesn’t account for differences in taxes or tariffs between the countries where each phone launches. What actually split opinion in the thread wasn’t the price itself so much as whether it’s “worth paying for” — some praised the near-invisible crease and the new camera placement, while others were skeptical given the overlap with the iPad and the size of the price gap versus existing models.

  • Pachinko Player Vows ‘I’m Done for Good’ — Comes Back 3 Days Later; 5ch Reacts: ‘The Real Addicts Return the Next Day’

A thread on 5channel’s News Speed+ board asked just how long a vow of “I’ll never play pachinko again” actually lasts. It started with a post reading, “This is honestly pathetic — I’ve finally realized it’s just a waste of money,” which set off a wave of replies describing the mechanics of addiction: “Willpower alone won’t cut it,” “You keep going because you can’t forget that one big win.” The liveliest exchange came from a former pachinko parlor employee who recalled a regular customer who declared he was quitting — only to be back at the parlor like normal three days later. That drew a reply that stuck out: “Three days is nothing — the real addicts go back the very next day.”

This might sound out of nowhere, but gambling addiction is pathetic. People lose miserably, fly off the handle blaming the house for it, and then, before the words are even out of their mouths, they’re back at the tables again. That’s just how most of them are.

You’re the one placing the bet of your own free will, yet when you lose, you blame someone other than yourself. That’s genuinely pathetic.

The other day, a thread went up on 5channel titled “I’ll never play pachinko again.” The thread’s creator wrote, “This is honestly pathetic… I’ve finally realized it’s just a waste of money.”

Then you keep going back day after day, and eventually that first win gets wiped out and you're in the red.

I'm bad at mornings, so when I see people lined up outside pachinko parlors before opening, I honestly think, wow, that's real dedication.

Gambling's illegal in Japan by law, and yet somehow these are all fine
It's because they're cushy retirement landing spots for bureaucrats (amakudari)

    ↓

Lottery = Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
Horse racing = Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries
Keirin (bicycle racing) = Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
Boat racing = Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism
Auto racing = Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry
Soccer lottery (toto) = Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
    Casinos = Cabinet Office

And then there's pachinko = the police
There was even a case of a former National Police Agency chief landing a cushy job at a pachinko manufacturer

Give it time and the Digital Agency will probably start an online casino too

By the way, stocks and forex are basically state-run gambling courtesy of the old Ministry of Finance.

I used to work security at a pachinko parlor, and there was this regular middle-aged guy who said, 'I'm done with pachinko, it's a waste of money,' and left. Three days later he was back like nothing happened lol

Life is built out of waste.
Anything that stirs up desire the way money does should be tossed aside as fast as possible.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Under Japanese law, pachinko isn’t classified as gambling but as “play” (遊技), and it operates legally through the so-called three-shop system: players exchange their balls for prizes, which they then sell for cash at a separate prize-exchange counter. The pattern described in the thread — players swearing they’re done, only to be back within days — is a well-documented pattern in gambling-addiction research, driven by the urge to chase losses and by the way rare big wins distort judgment. Commenters also shared anecdotes about wealthy people mixing in among 1-yen pachinko players, but no statistics were cited on the industry’s actual customer base or financial performance — this remains a thread of personal anecdotes and opinions, so it should be read with that caveat in mind.

  • New Kochikame Anime’s Ryotsu Voice Recast Draws ‘Doesn’t Fit’ Backlash — 5ch: ‘Does It Really Not Fit, Though?’

The voice actor playing Ryotsu Kankichi in the new Kochikame anime has been recast, and on a 5ch live-thread, a post asking “Does it really not fit, though?” touched off a wave of both criticism and support. Lasalle Ishii had voiced Ryotsu for a long stretch since the series began airing in 1996, and the thread’s discussion expanded beyond just the new actor’s performance to touch on the Doraemon voice cast change (nicknamed “Wasa-Dora”) and Subaru Kimura’s performance as Gian — the kind of “familiarity vs. skill” debate that’s common with long-running anime.

Does it really not fit, though?

Honestly, I don't think Lasalle was even that great either

    Re: #6
    He was amazing though
It just feels wrong without that voice
    13AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:24
Wasn't Subaru Kimura's recast the less jarring one, though?

    Re: #13
Exactly — the new guy's voice ('Welfare-kun,' as some are calling him) is too polished/clean-sounding
    19AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:26
Ryotsu and Goku's voices are locked in at this point — not even in the same league as the Doraemon recast (Wasa-Dora)

Isn't it about time the new cast's been at it longer than Nobuyo Oyama was?

    Re: #19
Wasa-Dora already blew past that record

This guy's probably not even a professional voice actor

The previous Ryotsu wasn't a pro either

    39AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:34
Feels like a lot of these people don't even care if it fits — they just want an excuse to trash the change itself

That happens with literally every piece of media, so it can't be helped

    Re: #41
Nah, I never got used to that one
    81AnonymousSep 9, 2026 11:54
You're just used to Lasalle's voice — he got slammed for not fitting the role at first too, you know
    98AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:01
Lasalle got better little by little too, so…
    109AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:04
    Re: #98
Lasalle was a total amateur going in, but this guy's already got 10 years under his belt and still sounds like this — there's no more room left to grow
    108AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:04
With Wasa-Dora it's actually Nobita that feels off — Wasabi's (Mizuta's) doing fine
    113AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:07
    Re: #108
The new Nobita was rough right after the switch — he's gotten a lot better lately
    117AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:09
People call anyone who bashes Wasa-Dora an old fogey, but even old shows had good recasts get accepted fine — like Maruko-chan or 'Tarakasu' (a mocking nickname for the Tara-chan actor)
    122AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:11
    Re: #117
Even within Doraemon itself, the rest of the recast cast got accepted just fine
    130AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:19
    Re: #117
At this point Wasa-Dora defenders can only fight back by branding critics as old fogeys — that's all they've got left. I'm gonna keep bashing it, and I'm fine being called an old fogey for it
    136AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:21
Lasalle's voice is raspy, but it carries so well — it's a miracle voice, honestly. Pure natural talent
    162AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:28
    Re: #136
Isn't that just because he talks slow enough to be understood?
    143AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:23
It's not about whether Lasalle was good or bad — he just did it for so long it stopped feeling off
    151AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:25
    Re: #143
At the start it was nothing but complaints too
    160AnonymousSep 9, 2026 12:27
    Re: #143
But Kobuhei (the old Katsuo VA) was a walking case of 'this feels wrong' from start to finish

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Ryotsu Kankichi in Kochikame has been voiced by comedian Lasalle Ishii for a long stretch since the anime began airing in 1996, and it’s the recasting of that role that sparked this discussion. The “Wasa-Dora” reference that comes up repeatedly in the thread refers to Doraemon’s 2005 voice cast change — often cited as a precedent that drew fierce backlash at first but became accepted over the years. Much of the reaction here, too, centers less on the actual quality of the new performance and more on discomfort with a voice that differs from one people grew attached to over many years — a pattern common to this kind of recasting. That said, the thread never clearly established the new voice actor’s name or background, so definitive judgments may still be premature.
