  • Hayato Sakamoto Ties Shigeo Nagashima’s Career Hit Record at 2,471 — 5ch: “Honestly, Harimoto Looks More Impressive”

In the September 13 game against DeNA (Yokohama), Giants infielder Hayato Sakamoto (37) reached 2,471 career hits, tying “Mr. Pro Baseball” Shigeo Nagashima for 9th place on the all-time NPB list. He set the mark with a single to left off Takeda, with two outs and a runner on first in the top of the 4th while trailing by five runs. In his 20th season, he’s delivered clutch hits at key moments all year — a walk-off 300th career home run against Hiroshima on May 13, and a walk-off three-run homer against Chunichi on July 17 — building toward this milestone. Discussion on the thread centered on comparing Nagashima’s reputation to Isao Harimoto and Sadaharu Oh, and on how realistic it is for Sakamoto to reach 3,000 hits with 529 left to go.

◆JERA Central League: DeNA vs. Giants (Sept. 13, Yokohama)

Giants infielder Hayato Sakamoto (37) recorded his 2,471st career hit, tying “Mr. Pro Baseball” Shigeo Nagashima (Giants) for 9th on the all-time NPB list. Trailing by five runs with two outs and a runner on first in the 4th inning, he lined a single to left off Takeda to extend the scoring chance.

In his 20th season, he hit a walk-off home run for career homer No. 300 against Hiroshima (Fukui) on May 13, and a walk-off three-run homer against Chunichi (Tokyo Dome) on July 17. Piling up 24 hits this season, including several memorable clutch knocks, he has now reached this milestone.

Maybe this hit was for Harimoto's sake. Just get 29 more for 2,500 and call it a career — 3,000 is a stretch at this point.

This pretty much locks in one of those chrysanthemum-crest commemorative bats (a special award bat given for historic NPB milestones), right?

    Background and Discussion Points

The top of NPB’s all-time hit rankings is dominated by players who kept up qualifying plate appearances for years on end, like Isao Harimoto (3,085) and Sadaharu Oh (2,786). Shigeo Nagashima earned the nickname “Mr.” for his popularity and symbolic status during his playing days, but by the numbers alone he falls short of Harimoto and Oh — and that gap became a central point of debate on the thread. There’s also a broader trend where players like Sakamoto, who lock down a starting job early, increasingly choose to move to MLB sooner rather than later, meaning fewer players are likely to reach 3,000 hits within NPB alone in the future. Sakamoto needs 529 more hits to reach the 3,000 mark, but most posters agreed that at age 37, getting there won’t be easy.

  • Dragons’ Akira Neo Struggling in Farm League with 7.25 ERA — Ex-Samurai Japan Manager Ibata: ‘His Outfield Defense Is Top-Class in Pro Baseball’

Chunichi’s Akira Neo, now in his 8th pro season, is struggling in the farm league since converting to pitcher, posting an 0-3 record with a 7.25 ERA. He earned his first career win against DeNA on April 10, but was demoted from the first team on May 4 and has remained in the minors since. Hirokazu Ibata, the former Samurai Japan manager, appeared on Chunichi’s official supporter program on the 13th and praised Neo’s usage, saying his outfield defense is ‘among the best in professional baseball.’ On 5channel, this feature sparked discussion about Neo’s history of position changes — shortstop to outfield to pitcher, shifting with each new manager — and debate over whether the team’s development approach has been the right one.

[Chunichi] Former Player Hirokazu Ibata Shares His View on How to Use Akira Neo: ‘This Is Just My Personal Opinion’

Hirokazu Ibata (51), the former Samurai Japan manager, appeared live on the Chunichi Dragons supporter program ‘Sunday Dragons’ (CBC) on the 13th, where he spoke about pitcher Akira Neo (26), now in his 8th professional season.

That day’s episode of Sunday Dragons aired a feature on Neo, based on footage the show has been following since last year. Neo picked up his first career win in an April 10 game against DeNA (in Yokohama), but was removed from the first-team roster on May 4.

Well, of course — he was a first-round pick that four teams fought over.
Even if it's not good for the team on the field, the front office has a responsibility here, and fans, amateur coaches, and future draft prospects are all watching how this plays out.

    Re: #14 "Yoda drafts him
→Don't underestimate pitching! (sticks him at shortstop only)"

Yoda just rejected the two-way idea, so his sin is relatively minor.
The real problem was Tatsunami not being able to teach him hitting.

Tatsunami's just too talented himself — he doesn't seem like the type who can teach others.

Hitting isn't something that gets better just because someone teaches it.
Both Ichiro and Matsui could already hit in the farm league from day one. Players who go on to become regulars after only six months to two years in the minors always show something exceptional right away.
    53AnonymousSep 13, 2026 20:33

There's a world of difference between him and Kozono and Fujiwara.
    54AnonymousSep 13, 2026 20:34
I mean, his hitting is failing-grade even in the farm league, so he's a bust as a position player.
Outfielders are actually in surplus, so there's no spot for him there.
He's already been given plenty of pro-level chances — normally he'd have been released by now. He's only still around because Chunichi prioritizes local-connection players and he was a first-round pick.
Position players who actually make it to the first team start hitting well in the farm league almost immediately.
    64AnonymousSep 13, 2026 20:39
    Re: #54

You have to take a long view on hitting.
Do you know what Furuta's (Yakult) rookie-year stats looked like?
He was a first-round pick, the No. 1 catcher out of the corporate leagues.

Yaegashi used to joke that his batted balls wouldn't even go forward.
They played him anyway, turning a blind eye to his hitting, just to let him gain experience as a catcher.

And in year two, he won the batting title.
    61AnonymousSep 13, 2026 20:37
    Re: #29
It's less that his contract literally can't be terminated, and more that Chunichi (backed by the newspaper company) can't give up on a player who joined as their pet local-connection pick — plus if he suddenly blossomed on another team they'd get slammed for it. It's really just the front office covering itself by avoiding a trade or release, lol.

Kozono, from the same draft class, won the batting title, and Fujiwara's also made it as a first-team regular — yet Neo, who was the most popular of the bunch back then, is completely out of the picture. Guess it just came down to which team drafted him.
    99AnonymousSep 13, 2026 20:52
    Re: #90
Neo was never suited for shortstop or pitcher.
They should've developed him as a late-innings outfield defensive replacement, giving him the occasional start in the outfield along the way.

Background and Key Points of Debate

Neo joined Chunichi as a shortstop after being a first-round pick contested by four teams in the 2018 draft, and has since been repeatedly converted between shortstop, outfield, and pitcher every time the team got a new manager — Yoda, Tatsunami, and now Inoue. The thread split over the question of “whose responsibility it is that he’s still being given chances after all this time,” with some pointing out that as a team tied to a local newspaper, Chunichi can’t easily let go of a first-round pick, while others blamed failures in the order and judgment behind his development. Comparisons kept coming up with fellow 2018 draftees Kaito Kozono and Kyota Fujiwara, who are now thriving, fueling persistent questions about why Neo alone keeps getting converted. Ibata’s comment that his “outfield defense is top-class in the sport” was meant to praise his defensive potential, but it sparked debate precisely because of the gap with his stalled batting and pitching numbers — pointing to a backstory behind the team’s handling of him that isn’t visible from the raw stats alone.

  • Married Men Outlive Bachelors? Marriage’s Life-Extending Effect Is Stark for Men

According to a survey featured by Forbes Japan, marriage has a far bigger impact on life expectancy for men than for women. Married men tend to live longer, healthier lives, but the same benefit is hard to find for women. On 5ch, a thread debated the reasons behind this gap: some pointed to lifestyle and “someone’s watching over you” effects — “if you live with someone, they’ll notice quickly if you collapse,” “single men have no one to rein them in, so their drinking and diet go downhill” — while others argued it’s really an economic effect (“higher-earning men are just more likely to get married”), and still others pushed back, saying “if you can manage yourself, being single shouldn’t matter.” The thread never settled on a single, simple explanation for marriage’s benefits.

    Forbes Japan — 2026.09.08

A certain set of statistics has recently caused a lot of surprise, confusion, and even anger online. It found that when it comes to life expectancy, men benefit far more from marriage than women do. In other words, men can live longer, healthier lives with a spouse’s support, but women don’t seem to get the same boost to their lifespan or quality of life.

That said, the idea that husbands are draining life out of their wives and tacking it onto their own isn’t backed up by research on the subject. Even so, there does seem to be a real difference in how being married or not shapes men’s and women’s lives.

What actually makes you happy? What do you enjoy doing?

    Background and talking points

Surveys linking marriage and life expectancy like this one have been reported repeatedly across various countries, but it’s worth noting that most are observational studies — they don’t prove that marriage itself causally extends life. What’s likely happening instead is a selection effect: men who are already healthy and financially stable tend to be the ones who get married in the first place (healthier people are more likely to remain in the marriage market). Some in the thread raised the income angle, but this selection-bias perspective barely came up. It’s also easy to overlook that the original article itself rejects the folk theory that “wives are draining their husbands’ lifespan.” The more mundane — and probably more accurate — conclusion is that lifestyle habits and self-care, not marital status itself, are what really drive lifespan differences.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[Society] Are married people happier than singles? Marriage tends to extend average lifespan, especially for men.”

  • Kioxia Overtook Toyota in Market Cap—Then Its Stock Halved in 48 Days. Is Kioxia “Finished”?

In June 2026, semiconductor memory giant Kioxia overtook Toyota Motor in market capitalization to become Japan’s largest company by that measure—only for its stock price to crash to half that value just 48 days later. The source article points out that Kioxia posted record-high sales and operating profit for the April-June quarter, and argues that the stock’s drop should be considered separately from the actual state of the business. On 5ch, opinion was split: some pointed to operating profit topping ¥1 trillion as proof there’s “no way this company is finished,” while others noted that top shareholder Bain Capital sold off its entire stake in July, right before the crash, and that SK Hynix’s massive NAND production expansion raises the question of whether the results are just a temporary blip driven by market conditions.

In June 2026, semiconductor memory giant Kioxia overtook Toyota Motor in market capitalization to become Japan’s largest company by that measure. But 48 days later, its stock price had been cut in half. Is Kioxia now “finished”? Political scientist Ryuta Ito says, “We need to consider the reasons behind the stock drop separately from whether the underlying business has actually weakened. Sales and operating profit for the April-June quarter were both record highs, and it’s significant that some major IT companies have even proposed multi-year contracts with ‘advance payment’ terms.”

That's just how cyclical stocks work. You shouldn't be looking at the P/E ratio—you need to look at the price outlook for whatever commodity they deal in.

It's already priced in, plus the rate of price increases is slowing.

    Re: #178
Korea's Samsung and SK Hynix have their production lines tied up making high-margin HBM, so the SSD demand that was left uncovered spilled over onto Kioxia.
But Big Tech didn't buy the SSDs once they'd spiked in price—instead they bought up huge quantities of Western Digital's dual-actuator ('two read/write arms') high-capacity HDDs, which run about as fast as SATA SSDs anyway.
Meanwhile Apple partnered up with China's CXMT and YMTC, which sent Samsung and SK Hynix's stock prices crashing.

And the clincher: Bain Capital, which had been Kioxia's top shareholder ever since the 2018 buyout,
sold off its entire stake on July 9, 2026—right before the crash accelerated.
    The stock had IPO'd at ¥1,455 and rocketed past ¥100,000;
Bain cashed out at essentially the peak, locking in about as huge a profit as you could ask for.

Then SK Hynix announced an ¥8 trillion mega-expansion of NAND production, and all the big money fled at once.

    Kioxia isn't going back up.

    Re: #183
Kioxia actually makes products that sell in the real world, you know.
This isn't some fictional economy built on stock-market gambling.

Background and key points of this discussion

Kioxia began as Toshiba’s former memory business and went public in December 2023 with an IPO price of ¥1,455; its core business is NAND flash memory. This latest spike-and-crash played out against a backdrop of memory-market prices swinging wildly amid generative-AI demand. Some posts in the thread didn’t seem to account for the fact that DRAM (especially HBM)—where SK Hynix and others are strong—is a separate market from NAND, which is Kioxia’s mainstay. It’s also worth noting that the claim that top shareholder Bain Capital sold its entire stake right before the crash does not appear in the source article, so that detail remains unverified. The way operating profit is at the mercy of market conditions (the “silicon cycle”) has drawn comparisons to oil stocks, and opinion is split on whether this is just a temporary windfall or evidence of real structural strength.

    Background and Discussion Points

Hello! Project idols are known for sculpting their bodies through daily dance lessons and live performances, and as with the comparisons to “Manakan” and “Ruru” raised in the thread, differences in physique between members are a frequent topic among fans. For Inoue Rein specifically, commenters noted she “was already muscular back in her Kobushi Factory days,” with many viewing her build as a reflection of years of accumulated practice. While this kind of attention to physical traits tends to take the form of praise, taken too far it can easily shade into excessive scrutiny of someone’s appearance, and the original thread did include a few posts with borderline language. In compiling this article, such excessive remarks have been excluded, with the exchange focused mainly on the praise and astonishment.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Inoue Rein-chan’s Muscles!!.”

  • Why male honeybees die 5 seconds after mating: “Even honeybees have it rough…”

Male honeybees (drones) get exactly one chance to mate in their entire lives — and when it’s over, their genitals tear off and stay lodged inside the queen while they die in as little as five seconds. A Yahoo News article about this bit of biology sparked discussion on 5channel’s Science News+ board. While many commenters expressed sympathy for the males (“poor guys”), others pointed out that most drones never even get the chance to mate before being kicked out of the hive, and that queens and worker bees face their own brutal fate — discarded once they can no longer lay eggs — pushing back on the article’s framing that the males alone are the tragic ones.

The shocking reason male honeybees burst and die 5 seconds after mating

A male honeybee (drone) has exactly one job in his entire life.

And the moment he’s done it, he dies.

Except for the males, everyone in the hive is female, but only a tiny fraction of those females can actually reproduce.
Make a move on a worker bee and you'll either get ignored or, worse, killed.

    In 5 seconds, you're gonna… POP!

Background and key points of this discussion

In a beehive, drones have no job besides reproduction, and each one only gets to mate once in his life. During mating, part of the drone’s genitalia stays lodged inside the queen and tears off, and the shock kills him within seconds. This also plugs the queen so no other male can mate with her afterward — so it’s not simply tragic, but part of the species’ survival strategy. While many in the thread reacted with “poor males,” others pushed back, pointing out that most other drones never even get to mate before being driven from the hive, and that queens and worker bees face an equally harsh fate once they can no longer lay eggs — several posters questioned the article’s framing that singles out the males as the only pitiable ones. The thread also split between those who see insect behavior as mindless, feeling-free programming, and those who argue that’s just another human interpretation — altogether, not a topic that resolves into simple sentimentality.

  • Nagano’s ‘Ban Old-Guy Comedians from Social Media’ Proposal Splits Opinion — 5ch: ‘It’s Not Like Everyone Can Handle It Like a Race Car Driver’

On the September 13 broadcast of “Weekly Sanma to Matsuko,” comedian Nagano proposed during the “Let’s Make TV Better Debate 2026” segment that “old-guy comedians should quit social media.” Matsuko chimed in with her own take, saying “they just can’t handle it,” sparking discussion. On 5ch, opinions split between users citing specific social-media blowups in support of the proposal, others arguing it’s a matter of individual character rather than age, and comments about Ariyoshi’s own behavior on social media.

Like I keep saying, the only sane people left in humanity are the rare few who deliberately avoid social media.
Celebrities feeding their need for validation on social media are no exception.

Middle-aged women aren't considered comedians anyway, so this doesn't even apply.
    9AnonymousSep 13, 2026 18:16
Ariyoshi is the same generation as Matsuko, but his start on social media happened to coincide with the smartphone boom and his TV breakthrough, so when he first made an account, he got auto-recommended to everyone and ended up with a massive follower count.
I can't help but think that when Ariyoshi told Matsuko not to bother with social media, it was really just jealousy — because if Matsuko had started back then, she would've overtaken him as number one.
If he genuinely believed no one should do it, he'd have quit himself.

Nagano was already dropping subtle warnings early on, back when Hiroyuki was first getting hyped up as the "debate king."
I don't usually watch shows he's on, but he seems like an introvert type who knows his roots and the dark side of the internet, and I've always thought he has sharp instincts.
He's one of the rare entertainers who both loves TV and understands the good and bad of the internet.

By the way, in the West, low-quality social media, low-quality videos, and "efficiency-driven" content-skimming are said to cause a so-called 'brain drain effect' that lowers intelligence and moral judgment.
In the UK, broad restrictions on young people's use of social media, video platforms, and other internet services are reportedly set to take effect starting next fiscal year.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nagano’s proposal was a one-off remark made during a debate segment on TBS’s “Weekly Sanma to Matsuko,” but it comes against a backdrop of repeated controversies — from Hitoshi Matsumoto’s blowup on X to famous comedians’ social-media posts causing problems again and again. The thread split over whether the issue is really about age (“old guys”) or individual character, with many pushing back on Matsuko’s “can’t handle it” framing by pointing out that plenty of young people don’t handle social media well either. It’s worth noting that the original remarks were made within a TV debate segment — Nagano and Matsuko aren’t actually pushing for any formal social-media regulation, which is an easy point to misread. These should be read simply as personal opinions expressed on a TV show.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Giants’ current “acting manager” setup, where a head coach runs the team, has repeatedly split opinion in the thread over each game’s in-game calls. This time the mid-game move swapping in Norimoto for starter Urata drew criticism, but it didn’t actually lead to a blowout — if anything, the bigger issue was the lineup failing to cash in its scoring chances. The Rookie of the Year race has the Giants’ Urata and DeNA’s Watarai as the named contenders, but factors beyond the stat line — games played, media coverage — muddy the evaluation, making it an easy topic to argue over. There was also a mention of Izumiguchi’s runners-in-scoring-position average (TZR), but such unofficial stats swing a lot depending on how they’re calculated, so cross-team comparisons shouldn’t be taken at face value.

Figures suggesting a fully-seated capacity of around 10,000 were floated, with comparisons to Budokan becoming the main focus of the discussion.

Is this the first time a Hello! Project act has used this venue?

    Juice has already played there.

    Background and Points of Debate

Pia Arena MM is a live-music-focused arena that opened in 2020; unlike multi-purpose arenas built with sports in mind, it’s often praised for its acoustics and sightlines. In recent years, more Hello! Project groups have used this venue as a step up from Nippon Budokan, and fans tend to compare attendance figures as a barometer of a group’s momentum. Note that the ‘10,000-plus’ figures raised in the thread are fan estimates and eyeball calculations, not official capacity numbers announced by the organizers. The comparison with Juice=Juice is also a recurring topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, rooted in the rivalry between groups under the same talent agency, and this thread followed that familiar pattern.

  • Okinawa Soba → Music Festival → Dog Event: 35-Year-Old’s ‘Solo Sunday’ Sparks Mixed Reactions

On 5ch’s live-commentary board, a 35-year-old thread starter posted a running account of his Sunday: Okinawa soba for lunch, a music festival in the afternoon, and then a meal at a dog-themed event near the festival venue. While some praised him with comments like “sounds like a full life,” other users grilled him about going out alone and being single, and the thread spiraled into his romantic history and body image issues. Reactions to his solo day off were split between sympathy and skepticism.

    Re: #100

There are stalls selling all kinds of stuff for dogs, like food and clothes

    Background and talking points

“Jakusha danshi” (弱者男性, literally “weak man”) is online slang men use to self-describe limited financial means or romantic experience — it is not an official statistical category. The original poster used the term himself while live-narrating his Sunday, and going to a festival or dog event alone is not especially unusual in itself. That said, self-deprecating posts like this tend to draw both casual chit-chat and users eager to pry into someone’s single status or lack of romantic experience, and this thread split along those lines too. It’s worth reading this as light banter based on information the poster volunteered himself, with no more backing than his own self-description as a “weak man.”
