  • Gundam Fans Debate: Which Mobile Suit Would You Least Want to Pilot? 5ch Names the ‘MS of Nightmares’

A Yahoo News article titled “Gundam Mobile Suits That Seem to Have an Extremely Low Return Rate” sparked a thread on 5ch where users debated which Mobile Suit they’d refuse to pilot no matter what. Names that came up one after another included the Federation’s mass-produced Ball, the Zeon Zudah (a limited-area combat unit that saw action after returning from Jupiter), and the Pabrikk, which is used in something close to suicide-attack tactics. Many posters backed up their picks with in-story depictions and lore rather than just a “looks weak” impression, and some even took a contrarian stance, arguing that the Ball’s small size might actually make it harder for enemies to hit. The thread ended up going well beyond simple “weak mobile suit” mockery.

Which one would you least want to ride…!? The “MS of nightmares” that seem to have an extremely low return rate in Gundam works

This year marks 47 years since the original anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), first went on air.

The show has plenty of highlights, but its huge variety of appealing mecha—Mobile Suits chief among them—is surely one of its biggest draws.

With the Ball, if you just floated upside down and didn't move, you could probably survive because nobody would bother with you lol

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The “return rate” in the original article isn’t an official stat or setting—it’s a provocative framing based on impressions from how things play out on-screen, without any rigorous basis. What split opinion in the thread was partly a statistical nitpick (can you really call a one-off prototype that got destroyed a “0% return rate,” when it’s just 0 out of 1?), and partly a reversal in how the Ball got evaluated—the idea that this general-purpose support unit might actually be more likely to survive precisely because it can avoid close combat. The Gundam franchise has gone through a lot of setting changes driven by production circumstances, and a mobile suit’s perceived strength often shifts depending on pilot skill or the needs of the story, which is why “weakest MS” rankings like this one are still a go-to topic of conversation 47 years after the show first aired.

  • Marathon’s Season 3 Delayed to December, Seasonal Model to Be Scrapped

A Reddit post has revealed that Season 3 of “Marathon” — Sony and Bungie’s new extraction shooter — has been pushed back to December 8th, and that the seasonal content model itself is being scrapped going forward. On 5channel’s hardware/industry board (commonly called “Geha,” short for ゲーム業界/game industry), posters pointed to reports that concurrent player counts have hit new all-time lows on both peaks and troughs, drew comparisons to “Concord” — which shut down less than two weeks after launch despite a roughly ¥40 billion ($270M) development budget — and cited Bungie’s roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B) acquisition price, sparking a wave of speculation about whether the game can survive and when it might get shut down.

So what are they gonna do about this?

    Re: #97
Xbox torched itself with Redfall and Starfield
Halo and Gears aren't exactly popular anymore either

    Background and key points

Marathon is a new title from Bungie, the studio Sony acquired in 2022 for roughly ¥500 billion ($3.4B), with a development budget reported at around ¥40 billion ($270M). Sony’s live-service track record includes “Concord,” which was also built on a roughly ¥40 billion budget and shut down less than two weeks after launch — the thread’s comparisons are drawn directly from that precedent. The Season 3 delay and the decision to abandon the seasonal model altogether both read as a course correction from the original live-service plan. That said, the claimed “all-time low” concurrent player counts and the specific figures cited for the Bungie acquisition and development budget come from posters in the thread and haven’t been independently verified against a primary source. The thread also brings up other Sony titles and past layoff reports, suggesting the unease here isn’t really about Marathon in isolation, but broader distrust of Sony’s live-service business as a whole.

Although she isn’t registered with a gym affiliated with the Japan Pro Boxing Association, she will fight in Japan as a Canadian national holding an Australian boxer’s license.

Ahead of her pro debut in Australia, she fractured her arm while serving as an MMA sparring partner in December 2025 and underwent surgery, leaving her without enough sparring time. She still made her pro boxing debut in March in a six-round bout, but lost a split decision (1-2) to local fighter Michelle Mack.

Women generally hit with less power than men even within the same weight class, so knockdown and KO rates are much lower.
A woman who can land a 👊 clean enough to actually drop someone is rare.
Which also means less damage to the 🧠.

Women also can't cut and rehydrate as much water weight as men can, due to the difference in muscle mass.
So the toll from cutting weight ends up being lighter for women too.

    Nice try playing expert 🤣

There's a theory that ring fatalities are more likely to happen in the mid-to-late rounds once accumulated head damage builds up, but the statistics don't actually show a clear trend like that.
Since the effects of head punches depend on a mix of factors from both the puncher and the one being hit, many experts say it's hard to pin down exactly what causes ring fatalities.

Honestly, wrestling was clearly her best sport.
Even in MMA, I remember she was great at getting the takedown but couldn't do much once she was there.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Miyuu Yamamoto comes from a family of fighters and is a three-time world wrestling champion; her younger brother, Norifumi “KID” Yamamoto, was also a celebrated MMA fighter who passed away from illness in 2018. This “domestic debut” isn’t the result of going through Japan’s usual pro boxing licensing process — instead, she’s competing in Japan using the Canadian citizenship she obtained during her wrestling career and an Australian boxing license, without belonging to a gym affiliated with the Japan Boxing Commission, a detail the original article doesn’t explain in much depth and that readers can easily misread. On the forum thread, opinion split over how KO risk in women’s boxing relates to age and punches taken, with one camp judging danger by the gender gap in punching power and another emphasizing cumulative damage. Commenters noted this isn’t medically settled, so there’s no simple conclusion.

If you wait 2 hours only to get told the cheapest possible destination, yeah, you'd want to tell them to get lost.
When I'm coming home from a trip I deliberately get off one stop early so I can grab a taxi there instead.

but it's also that they've stopped treating public transit as a service industry, more of a "you're gonna ride anyway, aren't you?"
    attitude that's become the norm.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Customer harassment” (kasu-hara) has become a widely used term for a labor issue in recent years, with authorities getting involved too — Tokyo enacted Japan’s first-ever ordinance against customer harassment in April 2025. In the thread, some voiced concern over customer-side misconduct like trouble with drunk passengers and verbal abuse or threats, while others held firm complaints about unfriendly drivers who won’t even respond when told a destination — suggesting this isn’t simply a case of blaming one side alone. Claims that Takeshi mocked taxi drivers in the past, along with anecdotes about his own younger years, were also posted, but it’s worth noting these are all hearsay separate from the actual broadcast content, and their accuracy hasn’t been confirmed.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Masataka Itsumi’s 1993 press conference is remembered as a trailblazing moment when a public figure disclosed his own diagnosis on camera, and it’s also credited with later boosting cancer-screening rates. The thread split over whether it was appropriate to use public airwaves for a personal medical announcement, with critical voices (post 78) pitted against those defending it as ultimately serving a social purpose (post 108). There was also surprise that he “looked older than 48,” which posters in the thread clarified was mainly down to him being gaunt from illness rather than the photo being black-and-white (posts 36→40). Anecdotes about Fuji TV’s momentum at the time, plus its relationships with contemporaries like Takeshi and Sanma, also came up — making this more than just an obituary, but a look back at late-Showa TV culture that a straightforward segment recap alone wouldn’t convey.

  • US Long-Term Interest Rates Briefly Top 5% — 5ch Reacts: “What Are NISA Investors Gonna Do Now?”

On September 14, 2026, the US long-term interest rate (10-year Treasury yield) briefly broke above 5%. It’s the first time in the 5% range since 2023, when the S&P 500 also saw declines. Since long-term rates serve as a benchmark for a wide range of borrowing costs — from mortgages to corporate bonds — continued increases are expected to ripple into the stock market and individual asset management. On 5ch, reactions ranged widely: concern over the impact on NISA (Japan’s tax-free investment account) investors, arguments that protecting your assets means fleeing to gold or yen-denominated holdings, and even voices seeing investment appeal in the high yields on US Treasuries.

The US long-term interest rate (10-year Treasury yield) briefly topped 5% on the 14th. Long-term rates serve as the “ruler” that measures the price of virtually every financial asset, and they also set the benchmark for a wide range of funding costs. If the rise continues, the impact will be unavoidable not just for financial markets but for the real US economy and government finances as well.

Rates also topped 5% back in ’23, when the S&P 500 fell

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This is the first time US long-term rates have topped 5% since October 2023, when wariness over high valuations similarly pushed the S&P 500 into a correction. Behind the rate rise lies a combination of concerns over increased Treasury issuance tied to the expanding government deficit (so-called fiscal discipline worries) and persistent inflationary pressure. The thread branched into discussion of the BOJ’s rate-hike debate and the divergence between US and Japanese monetary policy, but the main channel through which rising US rates actually reach Japanese households is via the exchange rate and import prices driven by the US-Japan rate differential — not a direct link. The split between commenters who see the high yield on US Treasuries as “investment appeal” and those who read it as a signal of worsening fiscal health reflects just how complicated that relationship is.

  • Masahiko “Matchy” Kondo Storms a Stranger’s House Shouting ‘I’m Match!’ — First-Ever Appearance on Tetsuro Degawa’s Battery-Charging Road Trip Show

It’s been announced that Masahiko “Matchy” Kondo will make his first-ever appearance on the 2.5-hour TV Tokyo special of “May I Borrow Some Electricity?” hosted by Tetsuro Degawa, airing September 19 at 18:30. The show is known for its format of visiting random households with no idea where the cast will end up, and on 5ch, Kondo’s casting itself was seen as “unexpected.” Threads lit up with reactions to his trademark “I’m Ma-tchy!” greeting, along with comments rehashing his history at the Johnny’s agency and his old scandal involving Akina Nakamori, as well as praise for how much softer his expression has gotten in recent years — a real mixed bag of opinions.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“May I Borrow Some Electricity?” hosted by Tetsuro Degawa is a hitchhiking-format show that began airing in 2009, built around cast members flagging down cars on the street and then visiting whatever household they happen to end up at. This marks Masahiko Kondo’s first-ever appearance on the show, and on the threads, his rare TV appearance itself was met with surprise. The reason discussion centered so heavily on Akina Nakamori traces back to the 1989 incident in Atami and the suicide-attempt scandal involving Nakamori that followed it — still remembered as one of the biggest scandals in Japanese entertainment history. Kondo reportedly never issued a public apology or explanation at the time, which is why calls of “he still owes Akina an apology” persist to this day. As for his departure from the Johnny’s agency, the fact that it came before the founder’s sexual abuse allegations became public is what fuels the view that he “dodged a bullet.” Note: comments containing unverified claims about financial trouble, strong personal attacks, or discriminatory language have been excluded from this article.

  • Exoplanet may have ring-shaped “moon-building material,” Kagoshima University announces — 5ch: “Like a world of smoke rings?”

A research team at Kagoshima University has announced that, based on ALMA telescope observation data, a theoretical model suggests the dust around the still-forming exoplanet “PDS 70c” may be distributed in a ring shape rather than a disk. Dust had previously been predicted to spiral inward toward the planet and thin out over time, but the observations contradicted this — and the newly proposed ring structure offers a hypothesis to explain the discrepancy. The study drew attention as a clue to how exomoons might form, and on 5ch, commenters carefully quoted the original article’s explanatory passages while tracing the reasoning, with some describing the ring structure as “like a world of smoke rings.”

    Possible ring-shaped “moon-building material” found around a still-forming exoplanet — Kagoshima University

Several candidate exomoons have been found so far, but none has been confirmed.

Against that backdrop, Kagoshima University announced on September 4 that observations with the ALMA telescope, combined with theoretical modeling, revealed that dust around the still-forming exoplanet “PDS 70c” — one of very few such planets ever observed — is distributed not as a disk but in a ring (a dust ring).

    >>The mystery of the mismatch between predictions about circumplanetary disks and ALMA telescope observations

    >>The discovery of exoplanets greatly advanced planet-formation theory. But most exoplanets found so far have already finished forming, so observing the formation process itself has been difficult until recently.

    >>The young T Tauri star "PDS 70," which is still in the process of forming, is known to host two planets: "PDS 70b" and "PDS 70c." Both are among only about ten confirmed still-forming exoplanets found so far. Both are thought to be giant gas planets with thick atmospheres, similar to Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system, and are currently accumulating gas from the surrounding "protoplanetary disk."
    4AnonymousSep 15, 2026 03:27
    >>PDS 70c in particular is known as the only still-forming exoplanet ever detected in the submillimeter/millimeter radio range. This radio emission is thought to be thermal radiation from dust in the small gas disk — the "circumplanetary disk" — that forms around a planet as it accretes gas.

    >>In recent years, ALMA has detected PDS 70c at multiple wavelengths, suggesting that its circumplanetary disk is "optically thick" in the submillimeter/millimeter band. Optically thick means there's so much dust in the disk that you can't see through to the other side.
    6AnonymousSep 15, 2026 03:33
    >>Until now, it was predicted that dust in the circumplanetary disk would lose angular momentum to gas drag and spiral inward toward the planet (a process called drift), causing the disk to become optically thin over time — so the observations contradicted this. The research team set out to solve this mystery.
    9AnonymousSep 15, 2026 03:37
    >>By the way, as a next-generation large radio telescope project Japan is also considering joining, the "ngVLA" plan aims to distribute a total of 263 parabolic antennas across North America and use very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) to create a giant radio telescope (interferometer) with an effective aperture of roughly 9,000 km, targeting full operation sometime in the 2040s. The study also confirmed that the dust ring predicted here should be clearly observable once the ngVLA is up and running.

There was no astrophysics course when I was at university. Around my 3rd or 4th year, they added a little intro-to-space unit to the general-ed curriculum for 1st-year through early 2nd-year students. Then after I graduated, the physics department actually got a dedicated space course.

Utterly pointless. They'd better not be using taxpayer money for this, right?

Background and key points of this topic

PDS 70 is one of the few celestial objects where the “site of planet formation” can be directly observed, with only about ten confirmed still-forming exoplanets known worldwide. Among them, PDS 70c is the only one also detected in radio wavelengths, and its surrounding dust was known to be “optically thick.” That conflicted with the usual theoretical prediction that dust should lose angular momentum to gas drag and spiral inward toward the planet (the drift process), thinning out over time — and this study set out to resolve that contradiction. What it found was that the dust may be gathered into a ring rather than spread evenly across a disk, which could eventually serve as raw material for a moon. That said, this is currently just an estimate from a theoretical model based on ALMA data — the ring structure and the “material” itself have not been directly observed or confirmed, which is easy to misunderstand. The prediction is expected to be clearly testable once the next-generation “ngVLA” radio telescope, targeted to begin operating in the 2040s, comes online. Thread reactions mostly consisted of careful quoting of the research content, with no notable points of disagreement.

The Nintendo Switch2 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake has appeared in a sale offering up to 75% off at Nintendo’s official store. On the thread, some expressed surprise at how cheap the price got — down to 1,300 yen — while others complained about it eating into the Switch2’s already tight 256GB of storage, or about the trilogy’s structure, where progression data resets every time you move on to a new title. Voices welcoming the speed of the price drop mixed with concerns that it would just end up as another unplayed “backlog” purchase.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a series entry released in 2020, the first installment of a planned trilogy. Because the trilogy’s structure resets progression data whenever players move on to the next title, the thread split between comments like “that kills any motivation to play the whole thing through” and “at 1,300 yen, that’s cheap enough to be worth it.” The Nintendo Switch2 also comes up often in these discussions because its built-in storage is a relatively modest 256GB, making it hard to keep multiple large titles installed at once — and true to form, complaints about storage space surfaced even before praise for the cheap price this time around. Note that the sales rankings and view-count comparisons cited in the thread reflect informal tallies and impressions from 5ch users, not official published statistics.

  • Tanaka Ao’s Opener Ruled an Own Goal as Leeds Rout Newcastle 4-1 to Climb to 3rd — 5ch: ‘World-Class… at Celebrating’

In Matchday 4 of the Premier League on September 14, Leeds beat Newcastle 4-1 to move up to provisional 3rd place. The opening goal came in the first half off Ao Tanaka’s right-footed shot, but since it deflected off an opposing player on its way in, it was recorded as an own goal, denying Tanaka his first goal of the season. Even so, his defensive work and his role in shaping the match’s flow were significant, and on 5ch the game drew both praise — “it was a clean sheet whenever Tanaka was on the pitch” — and harsh criticism — “that bad habit of losing the ball hasn’t changed.” Some posters also objected to the own-goal ruling itself or pointed out how strict the criteria seemed.

[9.14 Premier League Matchday 4: Leeds 4-1 Newcastle]

On the 15th, Leeds picked up a commanding 4-1 win over Newcastle in Matchday 4 of the Premier League to move up to 3rd place. Midfielder Ao Tanaka made his second straight league start and set up the opening goal with a right-footed shot, though it went into the books as an own goal.

The first big chance grew out of Tanaka’s buildup play. In the 14th minute, Tanaka collected a loose ball from a cross and sent one in himself from a central-left position; defender James Justin flicked the resulting far-post ball back across goal, and midfielder Jaidon Bogle spun and fired a shot, but goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček kept it out.

"Loster" Tanaka, is it? (a pun on ロスト/"lost," i.e. giving the ball away)
    93AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:11
    Re: #8
Forcing the opponent into an own goal while also losing the ball himself and nearly gifting one back — so very Tanaka lol
    9AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:06
    Tanaka Ao was incredible!!!
It was a clean sheet the whole time he was on the pitch.
    His defending was great too.
He kept cutting out passes and putting on the pressure.
    68AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:51
    Re: #9
Tanaka Ao was winning the ball back constantly.
Fights hard, runs hard, works hard.
    10AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:06
    Tanaka Ao was really good.
The whole flow of the game was different.
With him out there it's a clean sheet and the attack gets more active too.
Take him off and the midfield falls apart and they concede.
    33AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:20
    Re: #10
Calvert-Lewin said he's able to score because Tanaka Ao builds the attacking flow for him.
    11AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:07
4-0 against Newcastle with Tanaka Ao starting is impressive.

Last season, without him it was a draw and a loss.
    55AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:37
    Re: #11
Leeds now have enough depth that Harry Wilson — who was the main man at Fulham — is stuck on the bench,
and Tanaka Ao is starting and delivering. That's genuinely impressive, gotta hand it to him.
    16AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:08
This guy bursts into tears though.
Shows how mentally weak he is.
    18AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:09
There were some hardcore Tanaka fans going wild in the Sano thread yesterday — are the two fanbases actually rivals?
    21AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:10
Leeds have climbed to 3rd in the Premier League.

They've passed Hull, and passed Brighton too.

Only Arsenal and Man City are above Leeds now.
    25AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:12
    Re: #21
Leeds are strong with Tanaka Ao starting.
Are they seriously in Champions League position?
    24AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:12
Why is this an own goal? He shot straight at the goal,
and that's just a normal deflection off the defender.
This is the kind that gets corrected later, watch.
    26AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:13
    Re: #24
Tanaka Ao scored against Brighton last match too, but it got chalked off for offside
over a part of the hand that isn't even used in football [i.e., ruled offside via a handball technicality that shouldn't apply].
The officiating is way too strict on him, it's honestly a bit sad.
If he weren't Asian he'd probably already have 2 goals.
    34AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:20
Tanaka's an unbreakable guy — gets treated unfairly and still delivers results.
Sounds like he'd be popular with students cramming for exams.

    Re: #34
    A true phoenix🐦‍🔥
Tanaka Ao's even the face of ads for cram schools like Mori Juku, so it fits his image —
he was in the top 10 of his class at a competitive prep school too.
    37AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:23
Isn't this own-goal call kind of harsh?
    40AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:24
    Re: #37
    Yeah it's rough.
I want it properly credited as Tanaka Ao's goal.
There are cases where it gets corrected later too, right?
    51AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:31
    Re: #37
A goal off two deflections is an own goal, come on.
    39AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:24
Starting for the team in 3rd place in the strongest league in the world —
I'd say he's Japan's No. 1 player now, in name and in fact.
    46AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:27
    Re: #39
That's an overstatement. He's not that good.
    41AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:25
What's the guy who went to that team called Hull City up to these days?
    43AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:26
    Re: #41
Morita's supposedly such a high-"spec" player that he's been out of the squad forever (a sarcastic dig).
    45AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:27
    Arsenal
    Man City
    Leeds

    …?
Tanaka was in the second division not long ago — is this timeline for real, even if just for a moment?
Maybe Tanaka really is a lucky charm.
    48AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:29
    Re: #45
It's not luck, it's Tanaka Ao's own ability.
Leeds as a team are completely different depending on whether he's playing or not.
The data shows the win rate is clearly higher with him in the side.
He's unbeaten in home starts, with a win rate unmatched in the club's history.

Tanaka Ao got Leeds promoted to the Premier League, kept them up, and is now pushing them up the table.
    56AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:38
It ended up going down as an own goal, but that was Tanaka's goal.
Still, it's classic Tanaka to follow it up with a string of turnovers that invite danger.
I wish he'd sort that habit out.
    67AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:50
    Re: #56
It was a clean sheet the whole time Tanaka Ao was on the pitch though.
Once he got subbed off, the midfield and defense fell apart and they conceded.
His defending was working — he was cutting passes, winning the ball, and pressing nonstop.
    90AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:04
    Re: #56
    Yeah, that.
He pulls that kind of thing every single time, so as a defensive midfielder it's just not good enough.
    75AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:57
He's got some weird obsessives dragging his image down, but honestly, winning back a starting spot at a team sitting 3rd in the Premier League is impressive.
He climbed a long way back from being out of the squad in Germany's second division.
    78AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:57
    Re: #75
Come on, he was never out of the squad in the German second division, and he was barely even on the bench — he started most of the time.
    That's just anti-fans spreading misinformation.
    80AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:59
    Re: #75
Apparently Leeds got turned down by nine different midfielders they made offers to, and both of their regular defensive midfielders are injured lol
    82AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:00
    Re: #75
Tanaka did sit on the bench in the German second division at one point, it's true.

In the Minamino thread they used to call him "Nibungamu" or "Buntsuben" (mocking nicknames playing on "2nd division" and "Bundesliga").
    79AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:58
Tanaka pulled off another scapegoat-worthy giveaway, lol.
    81AnonymousSep 15, 2026 06:59
    Re: #79
It was a clean sheet the whole time Tanaka Ao was on the pitch though?
Once he left, the midfield fell apart, the defense got shaky, and they conceded.
Tanaka Ao was cutting passes, winning the ball, pressing like crazy — contributing a ton defensively.
    85AnonymousSep 15, 2026 07:01
    Re: #79
Tanaka misplayed a pass and it went straight through to a clear-cut chance right in front of goal.
A teammate barely blocked it, but it was worse than the Brazil game — an absolute scapegoat moment.

    Background and Talking Points

Whether a goal is recorded as an own goal comes down to the shot’s trajectory and how the defender made contact, and in borderline cases the official record is sometimes revised later — but this one was left as is. Ao Tanaka has kept his starting spot in the Premier League all season so far, supporting the team through ball-winning and buildup play, while also repeatedly giving the ball away and inviting danger, making him a player whose reputation splits opinion easily. In the thread, praise that “it’s a clean sheet whenever Tanaka is on the pitch” appeared alongside criticism that “he messes up every time” — but it’s worth noting both are subjective takes based on parts of the match rather than the full picture. There were also objections to the officiating standard, but that remains fan speculation rather than an officially confirmed fact.
