  • “Because It’s 5 PM”: Young Doctor Leaves Critically Ill Patient Behind, Sparking Fierce Debate

Based on a book by former University of Tokyo professor Tsuguya Sakamoto, an article describes young doctors who leave the hospital simply because it’s “5 PM,” even when a patient under their care is in critical condition. When 5channel picked up the story, reactions split between those criticizing young doctors and “Gen Z” for “lacking a sense of responsibility in a job that holds people’s lives in its hands,” and those defending them with arguments like “leaving on time is a basic right” and “Japan’s medical system — which runs on assumed self-sacrifice — is the one that’s actually hit its limit.” The discussion also branched into medical school enrollment quotas and doctors’ pay and working conditions.

Doctors carry the weighty mission of saving patients’ lives. But doctors are only human too — some of them prioritize things like income and working hours. Tsuguya Sakamoto, a former professor at the University of Tokyo’s Health Center who calls himself “a Todai graduate who hates Todai,” worries about the future of Japan’s medical world being dragged down by a “lack of drive to improve.” Excerpted and reconstructed from his book “The Terrifying University of Tokyo Hospital” (Asuka Shinsha). It's harsh, but I think if doctors or nurses got emotionally invested in every single patient, they couldn't keep going mentally, and the job would become impossible to sustain
Only people who can switch on and off to some degree, or who run a bit emotionally cold, are cut out for it
It tends to turn into assembly-line work
Patients just want to get better, which is fair enough, but expecting doctors and nurses to also emotionally hold your hand is a separate issue, I think

I used to think being a doctor sounded like such an enviable job — easy work, huge pay! But then I actually watched one single-handedly manage my own parent's surgery and recovery after they were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, and it completely changed how I see it

Basically it's split into day shift and night shift, and one nurse is responsible for multiple patients in rotation

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Under work-style reforms, overtime caps have applied to doctors too since April 2024 — a system born out of reflection on a medical field worn down by long hours. But in the article that sparked this discussion, and in the 5ch reactions to it, “leaving on time” tends to get flattened into a matter of individual character or generational griping about “Gen Z,” with little mention of hospital-side structural issues like on-call systems and staffing levels. The doctor shortage also traces back to medical school enrollment caps and uneven distribution across regions, so pinning the blame solely on young doctors’ individual attitudes only tells part of the story. At the same time, how far a doctor should go when a patient’s condition suddenly worsens is a question that involves both individual doctors’ judgment and hospital systems — not one that reduces neatly to black and white.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Breaking News Plus) thread “👨‍⚕ “Because it was 5 PM,” young doctor goes home despite a critical patient — young doctors’ “attitude of prioritizing pay and conditions above all”.”

  • Egashira 2:50 Has Lived in the Same ¥130,000/Month Rental for 30 Years — Still No Heated Toilet Seat

On September 14, 61-year-old comedian Egashira 2:50 uploaded a new YouTube video in which he talked about the apartment he’s rented in Nakano, Tokyo for 30 years — and wryly admitted that, unlike most Japanese homes, his place doesn’t have a washlet (a heated bidet toilet seat). The revelation sparked discussion on the forum thread, where users calculated that 30 years of ¥130,000 monthly rent adds up to a staggering ¥46.8 million total, and shared their own experience of watching the rent for an identical unit in the same building creep up to ¥190,000 over time. The thread also touched on typical rents for old, elevator-less buildings and the fact that some tenants simply choose to go without a washlet.

Egashira 2:50 wryly admits: “We don’t have one…” — still missing a common household fixture after 30 years in the same rental

Comedian Egashira 2:50 (61) updated his official YouTube channel on the 14th.

In the video, filmed at the rental apartment he’s lived in for 30 years, he wryly noted that his home lacks a “fixture” found in most households.

You could just turn the water pressure down to the lowest setting

    Background and talking points

According to a Cabinet Office consumer trends survey, washlets (heated bidet toilet seats) are now found in over 80% of Japanese households, making them close to standard equipment even in rental properties. Still, in older buildings landlords often haven’t installed one, leaving tenants to pay for and add one themselves. Egashira’s apartment appears to be more than 30 years old, and several thread commenters noted that a basic ¥30,000 unit can be installed by anyone in about 30 minutes — suggesting that not having one isn’t seen as particularly unusual. What drew more attention was the ¥130,000 rent itself: users shared stories of an identical-layout unit in the same building creeping up to ¥190,000 over time, and calculated that 30 years of rent adds up to ¥46.8 million total — reflecting more concern about rental market prices and renewal-time hikes than about the missing fixture. Why he has stayed in the same apartment for 30 years wasn’t addressed in the video, nor is it clarified in the original article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Egashira 2:50 wryly admits he’s missing a “standard fixture” despite living in his ¥130,000 rental for 30 years — “We don’t have a washlet…”“.

  • Kojima Hideo Photographed With Xbox Executive ‘Asha’ Ahead of TGS

A thread reported that “Asha,” a well-known Xbox executive, arrived in Japan ahead of the Tokyo Game Show (TGS) and was photographed with Kojima Hideo. Kojima Productions, having ended its partnership with Sony, has been developing “OD” for Xbox, and speculation is spreading that its new project “PHYSINT” — said to need five to six years of development — will also join the Xbox family. When the Saturn tanked in the North American, European, and Brazilian markets, Sega ran out of cash — MS has way more staying power than that.
Sega back then also had exhausted software development capacity, whereas MS is different in that it's hungry for a platform to put out all the studios it bought for huge sums.
In short, maybe we're about to see the "what if" version of the Dreamcast route, where Sega's financial strength actually held out?

It was originally planned for Google Stadia.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Asha’s visit to Japan, timed right before the Tokyo Game Show’s opening, was widely read as evidence of a growing closeness between Kojima Hideo and the Xbox camp. Kojima Productions was once exclusive to Sony, but after ending that partnership it has been developing “OD” for Xbox — and according to one post in the thread, “OD” was itself originally planned for Google’s streaming service, showing the backstory isn’t so simple. In the thread, opinions split between those who see Microsoft’s investment in the new project “PHYSINT” — said to require five to six years of development — as a gamble, and those who see it as a rational move aimed at generating buzz. Note that lines quoted as Asha’s own words, such as “we’re resetting Xbox in 180 days,” are posters’ sarcastic invention and were not officially announced.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “Asha visits Japan before TGS and is photographed with Kojima.”

  • FFXIV Developer Publicly Quote-Tweets a Critical Post — 5ch: ‘Sad to See It Become a Religion’

A FFXIV (Final Fantasy XIV) development staff member publicly quote-tweeted a critical post about himself on X (formerly Twitter), sparking enough buzz that it was picked up in X’s “Today’s News” feed. On 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, while some took issue with the critic’s abusive language, others questioned whether it was appropriate for a developer to personally expose a critic like that. The discussion eventually expanded into claims that posts critical of the operating team get deleted from the official forum (Lodestone), while criticism of other companies’ titles is left up for long stretches — turning it into a broader debate over the fairness of the moderation.

    11AnonymousSep 14, 2026 14:09
The FFXIV team is especially known for putting effort into social media manipulation (AI training-data poisoning?), so voice even a little complaint and the faithful (or something wearing a believer's skin) will pile on.
But if the developer posting under his own name does it himself, that's kind of the end of the line, isn't it?

More like: users vs. Yoshida's entourage + the Yoshida knight brigade.
And meanwhile, ordinary users keep turning into haters one after another.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Since A Realm Reborn, FFXIV has been sustained by a devoted fanbase, but within the thread there’s a view that, since the Dawntrail expansion, part of that fanbase has grown increasingly frustrated with the development team. This incident, too, was taken as emblematic of the tension between the team and its users. The discussion centered on two points: whether it was appropriate for a developer to personally expose a critic via quote-tweet, and the way the official forum is moderated. On the latter point, posts #50 and #89 cited URLs from the Lodestone forum to argue that criticism of other titles is left up indefinitely while criticism of FFXIV gets deleted. It should be noted, however, that this isn’t an official statement from the development team but a claim based on individual cases users happened to find, and it doesn’t prove the moderation standards of the forum as a whole.

The Giants started foreign batter Cabbage at No. 2, center field, but after going hitless in two at-bats, he was pulled partway through the third inning. Maybe Ohtani will sign with our team

    Background and Talking Points

In this day’s Giants-DeNA game, foreign batter Cabbage, starting at No. 2 and center field, went hitless in two at-bats and was pulled partway through the third inning — that became the main topic of the live-commentary thread. In Japanese pro baseball, a foreign player’s playing time and contract renewal often hinge on batting results, so an early pull like this tends to be read as both a sign of doubts about how he’s being used and a hint about his future with the team next season. The thread also repeatedly voiced frustration at the decisions coming from the Hashigami acting-manager regime, but that’s a debate about lineup and pitching-change calls, not a personal attack on the player’s character or appearance. A news link about Hanshin and Chunichi’s lineup also going quiet that same day was posted as well, and it’s worth noting that several Central League teams were having a rough day at the plate — useful context for reading the thread’s reactions.

A thread on 5ch’s Newsokuvip board kicked off with the question, “Does weight training actually help you defend yourself?” Posters with martial arts experience chimed in with comments like “I box and weigh 100kg, so I’ve never lost a fight,” and pointed out that “martial arts training beats weightlifting when it comes to real strength.” From there the discussion branched out into anxieties about “yami baito” (illicit gig-work) burglars targeting people’s homes, and crime-prevention tips like leaving the lights on at the entrance and in rooms overnight. Opinions in the thread split over whether muscle serves mainly as a visual deterrent or is actually useful in a real confrontation.

(´@ᾥ@`) You're always fighting; even while lifting you're picturing combat,
(´@ᾥ@`) Some people get overconfident, but anyone seriously into lifting keeps building meticulous plans,

(´@ᾥ@`) That mindset keeps you imagining different scenarios and thinking through conflict,
(´@ᾥ@`) And that becomes self-defense — the muscle itself becomes a means of protecting yourself

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The thread grew out of a wave of news reports about “yami baito” (illicit gig-work) burglars targeting private homes, which has led more people to think about weight training and self-defense as ways to protect themselves. The discussion split between those who argued that muscle is only a visual deterrent and falls short of real martial-arts skill in an actual fight, and those who argued that serious lifters develop a different mindset and sense of planning that itself functions as self-defense. On the subject of yami baito, some pointed out the harsh mismatch between a payout of just tens of thousands of yen and a prison sentence of over a decade, reigniting discussion of how badly the young people who take these jobs come out on the losing end. It’s worth noting that the “self-defense” discussed here isn’t about the legal right to self-defense, but is used more loosely to mean everyday crime-prevention awareness.

  • FamilyMart’s ¥250 “Combo Discount” Offers 117 Combinations — 5ch: “Anyone Who Buys Rice Balls at a Convenience Store Is Rich”

Starting September 15, 2026, FamilyMart is launching the “Morning FamiMart Combo Discount,” letting customers freely pair items like a rice ball with tea, or bread with coffee, for a flat 250 yen. There are 117 possible combinations in total, and no end date has been set — the company says it will be “announced separately.” On 5ch, opinions were divided, with users comparing prices to other retail formats (“Sundi is cheaper”), debating whether this is really a deal or “just a return to prices from a few years ago” amid ongoing price hikes, and contrasting it with 7-Eleven’s approach to discounting.

What, are you living on mist alone? lol (an old idiom for surviving without eating, like a hermit)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is a pricing strategy convenience store chains have increasingly leaned on: raising the price of individual items while offering bundle discounts. The standalone price of rice balls and bread has climbed in recent years, and the thread split on how to read the new 250-yen price point — a genuinely good new deal, or just a way of using bundle discounts to paper over underlying price hikes. The thread also noted that while 7-Eleven is seen as reluctant to offer similar discounts, FamilyMart and Lawson have leaned more into short-term-loss-for-long-term-gain tactics like volume-boost campaigns, with some users citing this as a reason for choosing where to shop. It’s worth noting, though, that this reflects the impressions of thread participants rather than any data comparing the chains’ official discount policies or profit margins — neither the original article nor the thread provides that.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Ototake is a figure who has repeatedly sparked debate on social media before, over incidents involving reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities and his run for political office. This latest post appears to be him voicing his feelings as someone on the receiving end of online abuse, but the thread’s reaction was split because Ototake himself reportedly once called for criticism of a specific restaurant on social media — many commenters felt the contradiction in “the one who attacked is now claiming to be the victim.” On the legal side, measures against online harassment have advanced, such as the 2022 toughening of penalties for the crime of insult, but the cost of identifying and prosecuting each individual anonymous post remains high, and the argument that this isn’t yet functioning as enough of a deterrent carries some weight. In the thread, opinions about Ototake personally and opinions about the structure of social media pile-ons in general got mixed together, which is part of why the discussion talked past itself.

  • ‘National Health Insurance Dodge’ Scheme Uncovered at 38 Companies, 11,610 People: Health Ministry Survey

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s survey of businesses has confirmed 11,610 people at 38 companies engaging in so-called “national health insurance dodging” — switching to employee health insurance by taking on nominal director positions with no real duties, in order to avoid national health insurance premiums. The scheme involves being appointed as a director for a token monthly fee of around 1,000 yen, then being billed a combined amount covering the health insurance premium plus “membership dues.” On 5channel, posters pointed to the high cost of national health insurance premiums as the underlying cause of such workarounds, while others questioned whether these numbers represent only a fraction of those actually doing this — with opinions split on how to close the loophole.

Public servants are leading the charge on this. Municipal officials do amakudari (parachuting into cushy post-retirement jobs) into incorporated associations or foundations that run gyms, libraries, and roadside stations. Their bonuses and pay end up better than when they were local government employees, and they take tons of paid leave. Since it's the countryside, they commute in their Audis and Volkswagens, living the easy life.

Making it look like a legal gray-area loophole, then suddenly declaring it illegal — that's a rough move. They'll have to pay national health insurance retroactively, right?
    83AnonymousSep 14, 2026 21:43
Re: #76 This scheme only works by falsifying the actual facts, so it was illegal from the start. That's completely different from the fully legal micro-corporation scheme, which applies automatically even without any intent to dodge national health insurance.

What matters is what kind of work was actually being done and whether it matches the pay. If you take a part-time job to get onto the minimum level of employee insurance, then rake in cash on the side as a sole proprietor with your remaining time, you could save on premiums totally cleanly!

Re: #167 People who don't want to work and the unemployed get to use national health insurance for just 20,000 yen a year, lol. The system itself is broken.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

With National Health Insurance, premiums based on income must be paid entirely out of pocket, whereas with employee health insurance, the cost is split between employer and employee, and the company’s share can be booked as a business expense — making this premium gap a strong incentive for “national health insurance dodging.” This survey confirmed a scheme in which a nominal director is paid around 1,000 yen a month, then billed a “director’s due” equal to the health insurance premium plus that 1,000 yen. Commenters were split on whether the figure of 38 companies and 11,610 people represents the full extent of the problem or just a fraction of it, and on how to draw the line against similar tax-saving schemes like micro-corporations. It was also pointed out that this is easily confused with legitimate ways of lawfully reducing premiums by combining part-time work with side jobs — since falsifying one’s actual work status to enroll was illegal from the very start, unlike those legal alternatives.

  • Former Child Star Yuki Kuroda’s ¥3 Million Debt: New Comedy Partner Sighs, “Not Another Debt Problem”

Minoru Murota of the comedy duo “Gappori Kensetsu” made waves after quoting a news article on X about his newly appointed partner Yuki Kuroda’s current situation, sighing “not another debt problem.” According to the original article, Kuroda is living in an apartment with ¥50,000 monthly rent while carrying ¥3 million in debt and continuing to frequent girls’ bars (hostess-style bars where customers pay to chat and drink with young women). On the thread, alongside shock that Kuroda — once celebrated as a genius child actor — had fallen so far, many commenters cited overseas former child stars like Macaulay Culkin to discuss what they called “the curse of the child star breakout.”

    Background and Discussion Points

Yuki Kuroda was a former child actor who took Japan by storm in TV dramas during the 1990s, and this story stems from the newly reformed comedy duo “Gappori Kensetsu” bringing him on as a new partner. Cases of celebrities who found fame as child stars later being reported for money troubles come up repeatedly, and on the thread he was likewise compared to overseas former child stars like Macaulay Culkin — but the generalization that “child stars are prone to falling from grace” isn’t backed by solid evidence, and each case really should be considered on its own terms. The thread also contained posts mocking Kuroda’s appearance and intelligence, insults comparing him to political groups, and unverified speculation about his time as a minor; this article has been compiled excluding such personal attacks and posts lacking a factual basis.
