  • Cricket Found in Kura Sushi Soup? “Drank Half Without Noticing” Post Goes Viral, Company Reports to Health Department

A post claiming a dead cricket was found in soup ordered at Kura Sushi has gone viral on Threads. The poster says they drank about half of it before noticing, and the operating company says it is aware of the incident and has already reported it to the local health department. On 5ch, reactions came from all angles: some users scrutinized the photo trying to determine whether it was really a cricket or a cockroach, others tied it to the years-long debate over eating crickets as food, and still others called for stricter hygiene management at restaurants.

    Background and Talking Points

Foreign-object contamination at rotating-sushi chains has become a familiar pattern: a single social media post goes viral and the company is immediately pressed to respond. This time, too, attention centered on the poster’s own photo and whether it had been reported to the health department. On the thread, many users tried to determine from the photo alone whether the insect was a cricket or a cockroach, but heat and prolonged soaking in liquid can easily distort an insect’s shape, making a definitive call from an image alone difficult. The debate over eating crickets as food has also been divisive for several years now, and that context appears to have amplified reactions to this incident. It’s worth noting, since it’s easily misunderstood, that reporting an incident to the health department is simply the standard procedure when a foreign object is found in food — it does not mean any administrative penalty has been imposed at this stage.

  • Lawson’s Budget Bento Slammed as ‘Livestock Feed’ — Skimpy Fillings Spark Backlash

A thread on 5ch (Livegalileo board) kicked off with a photo of Lawson’s cut-price bento, its corn and what looked like government-stockpiled rice among the fillings prompting cries of “that’s literally livestock feed.” The discussion spiraled into griping about rising prices in general: a beef kalbi bento now runs 740 yen, and the salmon in the salmon bento is apparently the pricey “bodakko” cut. Posters compared it to bentos from discount chains like Lamu and Don Quijote, and opinions split hard over the contradiction of “prices are through the roof, yet young people still line up at Starbucks dressed in brand-name clothes.”

Background and Talking Points on This Thread

Convenience store bento prices have been climbing in recent years amid rising ingredient and logistics costs, and the thread’s sense that a bento now runs “740 yen” versus “490 yen before” fits that trend. The “stockpiled rice” mentioned in the replies likely refers to the government-released reserve rice put on the market in response to soaring rice prices, and has become a stock phrase for mocking price hikes. “Bodakko” is a brand name for salted salmon, a relatively pricey cut often given as a gift, which fed the complaints that it’s overkill for a bento filling. The thread split between viewing budget bentos as “companies working hard to offer more options” versus “a symbol of declining living standards” — and that same divide showed up in the debate over young people’s spending habits.

One local reporter delivered a scathing verdict, saying the team should bench him for “literally anyone else.” On the 5ch thread (Geinosupo Sokuho+), commenters weighed in with a range of theories: some noted he had similar slumps back in his Yakult days, others speculated that — like Shohei Ohtani — he’d been banned from using the AI pitch-prediction tool in the dugout, while others pushed back, arguing his 31 home runs and .804 OPS deserve more credit.

    Americans don't last long either
Take Raleigh, last year's HR champ — he's been running numbers like Murakami's recent stretch basically since Opening Day

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In his first year after moving overseas, Munetaka Murakami has hit 31 home runs, but has fallen into an extreme slump since August. His strikeout rate topping 40% appears to reflect opposing pitchers adjusting to him, and commenters on the thread pointed out a pattern common to past Japanese hitters like Masataka Yoshida — a “second-half rookie-year collapse.” On the other hand, an .804 OPS is far from a bad number, and by home run count alone he still ranks near the top of his team, so judging him solely by batting average or strikeout rate may be one-sided. It’s worth noting that the theory attributing his slump to restrictions on AI-assisted pitch-prediction tools is pure speculation from the thread, not something officially stated by the team or MLB.

A post about reading Masaya Tokuhiro’s manga Jungle King Tar-chan sparked a wide-ranging discussion on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (“Live Galileo”) board. Users who remember the series’ original run shared memories one after another — the sheer amount of raunchy humor, the shift from gag comedy to a fighting-manga format, and the circumstances behind its transition into New Tar-chan. While the thread cited the view that the series was “a dig at One Piece” in a positive light, the conversation also branched into comparisons with the same author’s Kyoshiro 2030 and Shape Up Ran, as well as BOY, another series running in Jump around the same time.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Jungle King Tar-chan was serialized by Masaya Tokuhiro in Weekly Shonen Jump and later continued under the title New Tar-chan. Its shift from gag manga to a fighting/battle-focused format was a pattern also seen in other Jump series of the era, like Kinnikuman, and this trend came up repeatedly in the thread. Tokuhiro has also worked on titles such as Shape Up Ran, Boken Shonen, and Kyoshiro 2030, and the thread’s comments about strong digital sales not translating into paper reprints reflect a very real sentiment about the ongoing shift away from print in publishing. That said, it’s worth noting that the comparison to One Piece isn’t a direct connection within the series itself — it’s purely a reader impression, not an established fact.

  • THE FIRST SLAM DUNK Set for Spring 2027 Re-Release — 5ch Reacts: “I Saw It, It’s Seriously Boring”

The movie THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has been announced for a limited re-release from March 20 to April 1, 2027. The promotional visual released for the announcement features a side profile of Ryota Miyagi paired with the tagline “For the season of beginnings,” suggesting the timing is meant to coincide with the start of a new school term. On 5ch, reactions focused less on the re-release news itself and more on the merits of the movie versus the original TV anime, with opinions split wildly — from the scathing “I saw it, it’s seriously boring” to requests for adaptations of matches other than the one against Sannoh.

    September 16, 2026

The movie THE FIRST SLAM DUNK will get a limited re-release from March 20 to April 1, 2027. Details such as which theaters will screen it will be announced later.

The visual released to accompany the re-release shows protagonist Ryota Miyagi’s profile rendered with a sense of speed, paired with the catchphrase “For the season of beginnings.” Timed to the turning point between spring break and the new school term, it’s a striking image meant to send fans off on a new step forward.

    25AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:38
    Re: #18
    Exactly this.
The manga never gets old no matter how many times you reread it, but the movie's garbage.
Even setting the Ryota stuff aside, that art style doesn't even convey the desperation of the match.
Feels like doing the Sannoh match in the style of the old TV anime would've turned out better.
    70AnonymousSep 16, 2026 20:00
    Re: #18
Seriously, who was that even for?
He's the least popular character, and it's an episode that never appeared in the manga at all.

    21AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:36

    50AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:50
It's true the movie's voice casting felt really off, but that doesn't mean I think the anime's any good either.
As an actual basketball match, the theatrical version is more polished.
Bottom line, the original manga reigns supreme.
    59AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:54
    Re: #50
The manga leans heavily on back-and-forth banter between players during the match, and the anime reproduces that word-for-word, which makes it feel even more off.
There's no way players would have time to chat like that in the middle of an actual game.

    This, so true.

    Background and Talking Points

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, released in December 2022, is an animated film directed by original creator Takehiko Inoue himself, and its character designs and animation style differ greatly from the 1990s TV anime. Another distinctive feature is that it centers on Ryota Miyagi rather than Hanamichi Sakuragi as the protagonist, which is what’s behind thread reactions like “nobody asked for Ryota to be the lead.” This also isn’t the first re-release — it’s already had several since its original run, and no new movie has actually been officially announced, a point that’s easy to misread from the headline. The thread’s discussion centered mainly on which version, the movie or the old anime, has the better match depictions, with entrenched support and criticism on both sides.

A flute performance video posted to Instagram by Kitagawa Rio — a former member of Morning Musume。’25 who now works as a TV Tokyo announcer — became a hot topic on a Hello! Project thread on 5ch. Her smooth, clear tone drew surprised praise like “saved it in seconds” and “what a beautiful tone,” though some cooler voices pushed back, arguing that calling it “professional level” was an overstatement since she’d never won a competition prize. A photo from when she reportedly started playing flute seriously at age 11 was also shared, backing up the talent she’d talked about since her idol days.

During last year's spring tour and Winter Hello! she sometimes looked like all the life had drained from her expression
Her expression was good even at the graduation live, but even seeing her from like 20cm away, her back and shoulders had gotten scarily thin, almost skeletal — it was pitiful
I really want Rio-san to be rewarded and hit it big more than anyone

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Kitagawa Rio graduated from Morning Musume。’25 and now works as a staff announcer at TV Tokyo. Her flute playing had been mentioned as a special talent since her idol days, but she rarely performed it in earnest on stage, so this Instagram post gave fans a fresh look at just how skilled she really is. Opinions split on the thread over how to take the phrase “professional level” — some called it an exaggeration given the lack of an objective track record like competition awards, while others praised her tone and technical skill at face value. The photos she posted show she’d been practicing since around age 11, meaning this wasn’t a sudden reveal but the payoff of years of accumulated practice — a bit of background that’s easy to miss from the scattered comments alone.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and summaries of the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Kitagawa Rio-chaso, right? She’s always said she could play the flute — did you know she was this professional-level?” (“-chaso” is an affectionate, cutesy variant of “-chan”).

  • Over 30% of unmarried people now say they don’t want kids, a first — 5ch: ‘The moment you start weighing pros and cons, it’s over’

The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research (IPSS) has released its 17th Basic Survey on Birth Trends, finding that among unmarried people aged 18 to 34, 33.0% of men and 32.4% of women said they “don’t want children” — both topping 30% for the first time. That’s up 9.8 and 8.8 percentage points, respectively, from the previous 2021 survey, while the average number of children born to couples married 15 to 19 years has also hit a record low of 1.86. On 5ch, opinions split over what to do about it: some argued the real cause isn’t financial hardship but the fact that people have started weighing marriage and childbirth in terms of costs and benefits at all, while others called for bigger government payouts.

A survey by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research has found that a growing number of unmarried young people don’t want children. According to the 17th Basic Survey on Birth Trends, the share of unmarried people aged 18-34 who said they “don’t want children” topped 30% for the first time. Broken down by gender, it was 33.0% for men and 32.4% for women — up 9.8 and 8.8 percentage points, respectively, from the previous survey (2021).

Meanwhile, among unmarried young people who do want children, only 7.7% of men said they wanted “three or more,” down 3.9 points. Among women the figure fell 0.7 points from last time to 11.9%.

The average number of children among couples married 15-19 years also hit a record low of 1.86, driven in part by a 1.9-point rise (to 9.6%) in the share of couples with “zero” children compared to the previous survey.

The money's there, except for a bottom segment.
The real issue is that more people have it but still choose not to have kids.
From a guy's perspective, divorce rates are high and men often can't get custody in a divorce, so it feels like marriage could all be for nothing — that's another reason not to bother. They should scrap asset division too.

There's actually a solid amount of data on what happens to people who keep putting it off, and the conclusion is pretty consistent.
They hit an age where it's too late to do anything, get hit with intense regret, fall into self-loathing, and spend the rest of their life listless, like a burned-out husk.

What matters is that whatever choice you make, you decide and act on it yourself instead of just postponing. If you decide not to have kids and act accordingly, you'll have far fewer regrets.

But whether you're a man or a woman, five years from now your odds of finding a partner under the same conditions as today will have dropped massively.
The longer you put it off, the worse your position gets and the harder it becomes.
What matters is making a clear decision.
If you're not going to do it, don't. If you're not having kids, then don't.
Decide clearly and you won't suffer over it.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Basic Survey on Birth Trends is Japan’s largest survey on declining birthrates, conducted by the IPSS every five years among single people and married couples; this round is the first since 2021. What makes this data notable is that, against a debate over unmarried and declining birth rates that has typically been chalked up to “economic reasons,” the segment that simply doesn’t want children at all has surged in just five years. In the thread, one camp argued that “the cause isn’t money — it’s that people have started weighing marriage and childbirth in terms of costs and benefits at all,” while another argued that “boosting government payouts would solve it,” but the survey data itself can’t settle that debate. It only tracks how stated preferences have shifted over time, not the underlying change in values driving them. It’s also worth noting that the share wanting “three or more” children declined for both men and women, suggesting that anti-declining-birthrate policy may need to shift focus from just supporting marriage to motivating people to want children in the first place — a point barely touched on in the replies.

  • TV Asahi Axes Tuesday 9pm Drama Slot in October — ‘Yoshizumi & Kotaro’ Travel Show Expands to 2 Hours

TV Asahi announced at its September 16 programming briefing that it will end its Tuesday 9pm drama slot as part of the October schedule overhaul. The slot has delivered talked-about hits like “Reunion ~Silent Truth~,” “Reborn ~The Last Hero~,” and “Crossroad ~A Promise of Emergency Care~,” but its replacement will be a travel variety show hosted by Yoshizumi Ishihara and Kotaro Koizumi, expanding from one hour to two. On 5ch, users debated whether sagging ratings and high production costs were behind the cancellation, argued over whether core-demographic ratings or household ratings should be the real yardstick, and traded opinions on how TV Asahi stacks up against Fuji TV in the ratings race.

    September 16, 2026

On September 16, TV Asahi held a briefing on its “October 2026 programming overhaul,” announcing changes to the Tuesday 9pm slot that has aired its serial dramas.

In recent years the slot has featured dramas such as “Reunion ~Silent Truth~” starring Ryoma Takeuchi (January 2026 season), “Reborn ~The Last Hero~” starring Issey Takahashi (April 2026 season), and “Crossroad ~A Promise of Emergency Care~” starring Mio Imada (July 2026 season), but it has now been decided that the drama slot will end starting with the October season. Taking its place, the previously one-hour “Japan Exploration Academic Variety: Tuesday’s Yoshizumi & Kotaro,” hosted by TV personality Yoshizumi Ishihara and actor Kotaro Koizumi (which had aired Tuesdays at 8pm), will expand to two hours and relaunch as “Spectacular Views & World Heritage: Tuesday’s Yoshizumi & Kotaro.”

Kaji Yarou was actually aimed more at the older crowd, and it got cut alongside Hanataka when they were prioritizing core ratings

Background and Key Points of This Story

TV Asahi’s Tuesday 9pm slot has in recent years featured leads like Ryoma Takeuchi, Issey Takahashi, and Mio Imada, but none of these are said to have become a genuine ratings hit. As pointed out on the thread, the network reportedly shifted its evaluation metric from household ratings to core-demographic ratings (viewers 49 and under) a few years ago, only to swing back to prioritizing household ratings after that approach backfired — meaning the slot’s fate can’t be explained by a single number. Dramas rack up heavy costs from overseas location shoots and cast fees, while travel variety shows are seen as comparatively cheap and reliably steady in the ratings, and the thread leaned toward the view that the cancellation reflects a cost-benefit calculation as much as poor ratings. Views on whether TV Asahi is losing or winning against Fuji TV were split right down the middle — with both “lost to Fuji” and “actually TV Asahi is ahead” claims appearing — and that unresolved back-and-forth is an easy point for readers to get the wrong idea about.

  • Torneko’s Great Adventure Remaster Gets a Day-One-Ish Patch — Fans Ask Why It Wasn’t Fixed Before Launch

On September 16, Square Enix released an update for the Steam version of Torneko’s Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon – A Slightly Nice Remaster. Other platforms will get the update as they become ready. On a 5ch hardware/industry (“geha”) board thread, many users asked why the fixes couldn’t have been made before release, given how soon after launch they arrived, while others noted that console versions face a certification process that delays updates, and the conversation also touched on comparisons with Shiren the Wanderer 6, which launched around the same time.

There's no way they wouldn't have noticed it during testing.

If they'd had an AI handle it, this might've slipped through, since it's not a progression-blocking bug.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Steam version can receive patches from the developer at any time, but console versions have to clear each hardware maker’s certification process, which typically delays rollout anywhere from a few days to a few weeks — that structural difference is why thread posters singled the update out as “Steam-only” or said the “Switch version got pushed to the back of the line.” The exchanges in the thread suggest this update mainly improves diagonal-input responsiveness, while other issues — like the control freeze during level-ups — remain unfixed. The conversation later drifted toward comparisons with Shiren 6, likely because that similarly-themed title, released around the same time, offered a natural benchmark for polish; it’s worth noting that comments about pricing and quality reflect individual opinions rather than any official comparative data. Likewise, the recurring question of “why couldn’t this have been fixed before release” mostly comes from speculation by people without direct insight into the actual development and QA process, and no definitive conclusion was reached in the thread.

  • Rakuten Owner Mikitani Urges NPB to Fast-Track Pitch Clock and ABS Adoption

On September 16, Rakuten owner Hiroshi Mikitani, attending the 12-team owners’ meeting for the first time in seven years, revealed that he had urged NPB to quickly adopt the “pitch clock,” which limits the time between pitches, and the automated ball-strike system “ABS.” He argued that both systems have helped revive MLB’s popularity in the US, and that shortening game times would also ease the burden on players. In the 5ch thread, some voiced support (“they should adopt it ASAP”), while others pushed back on the premise of the proposal itself — questioning who would cover the implementation costs, whether regional stadiums could support the system, and whether there’s actually data showing MLB’s popularity has recovered.

Rakuten owner Hiroshi Mikitani attended the 12-team owners’ meeting held in Tokyo on the 16th — his first appearance since 2019, seven years ago. Speaking to reporters afterward, he revealed that he had proposed NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball) quickly adopt the “pitch clock,” which sets time limits for pitchers and batters between pitches, along with ABS (Automated Ball-Strike system).

Mikitani explained: “Adopting this in the US has helped revive MLB’s popularity. Our own team’s games feel a bit long too, and I think players would rather have shorter games with less strain than longer ones. Even if there are various issues, I think it’d be good to allow some exceptions and get it implemented as soon as possible.”

Let's add strike-zone overlays to the broadcast footage too — Korean pro baseball already does it.

Rakuten's still using fax machines in this day and age? lol
    5AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:55
The cost of implementing ABS is covered by each team. If someone said 'Rakuten plays games in Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima too, so cover those stadiums as well,' he'd flip to the opposition instantly.

    Re: #5
ABS adoption is only planned for the 12 teams' home stadiums. Regional stadiums can't support it.
    6AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:55
The rush is suspicious. What's he really scheming?
    9AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:57
Wow, didn't realize he still cared about baseball lol. Go fix Rakuten Mobile instead, lol.
    10AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:57
Popularity revival? And specifically thanks to the pitch clock and ABS?
    13AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:58
Mickey (Mikitani's nickname) is a total newbie on this — the pitch clock and PitchCom need to be introduced together, otherwise it's overwhelmingly in the batter's favor.
    14AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:00
Did he discover that the frequency bands used by the pitch clock and ABS equipment can be controlled through Rakuten Mobile?

    Re: #14
He's probably angling to build the system himself.
    22AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:01
Since it uses AI, this is a natural stance for Rakuten as an IT company. It's completely contradictory for people who wanted to win the WBC so badly to oppose this. If you're not used to it, it's rough going — it took about a year before ABS finally started to feel watchable.
    23AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:01
There's no fixed game length, so they can take their time playing and we can take our time watching. It's just like golf.

    > Owner Mikitani said, "Adopting this in the US has helped revive MLB's popularity."

Looking at the compound annual revenue growth rate (CAGR) of major North American sports leagues since 2015:

    NBA: 10.7%
    NFL: 7.5%
    NHL: 6.8%
    MLB: 2.7%

If MLB had matched the NBA's growth rate, league revenue would be roughly double what it is now.

The Premier League is at 7.3%.

But he's flown all the way to Spain to watch Barcelona matches multiple times.
    33AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:06
Who's footing the bill for implementation?
    35AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:07
Well, setting the machine umpiring aside, if players don't get used to the pitch clock, they won't be able to handle it in international games.
    36AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:07
Wait, isn't ABS the Anti-lock Braking System? (joking on the acronym overlap with car brakes)
    37AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:07
Of course everything MLB adopts should just be adopted here too.
    40AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:08
    Re: #34
Come on, don't say that — there's no other owner who'd actually pour money into a team based in Sendai.
    42AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:09
Umpiring is basically risking your life out there, so they should just get rid of home-plate umpires.
    43AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:12
Who pays the cost? SoftBank should, obviously — they're hogging all the league titles, so the least they can do is cover that.
    44AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:12
I usually watch MLB, but I caught an NPB game for the first time in a while recently and thought the gap between pitches isn't so bad in its own way — you get to really take in the players' expressions. Made me feel like the pitcher really is the star of Japanese baseball.

ABS, though, should be adopted ASAP.
    45AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:12
Thought he'd already given up on the team. Didn't realize he still cared.
    46AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:13
Japanese umpires' skill level is drastically lower, so ABS should be adopted as soon as possible.
    50AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:19
Oh, so the pitch clock was only decided as a 'someday' thing? I thought it had already been locked in for next season.
    51AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:21
People in Japanese baseball have a terrible knee-jerk reaction against anything that shortens games — pitch clocks, tiebreakers, seven-inning games, etc.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

ABS is a system in which a machine calls balls and strikes on pitches. Independent leagues and MLB’s minor leagues have tested full automated calling, while MLB itself has been trialing a “challenge system” this season, where players can only request a review on close pitches. NPB has also tested the system in select games, but no timeline for full adoption has been announced. The pitch clock is likewise treated as a foregone conclusion for eventual adoption, but the implementation year remains undecided — one thread commenter even said they’d mistakenly thought it was starting next season. The main point of contention was cost: whether implementation would be limited to the 12 teams’ home stadiums, or would also extend to Rakuten’s regional games outside Sendai. Mikitani’s stated rationale — that “MLB’s popularity has recovered” — also drew skepticism, with users citing revenue growth-rate comparisons against other sports leagues; overall, the discussion focused less on the substance of the proposal than on whether its underlying premises actually held up.
