  • New Fire Emblem Scores All 9s in Famitsu Cross Review, No Perfect 10 — 5ch: ‘Same Score as a Trash Game, Says It All’

The scores for the new Fire Emblem (a Switch 2 exclusive) in Weekly Famitsu’s Cross Review have come out, with all four reviewers giving it 9 out of 10, for a combined total of 36/40 (90 on a 100-point scale). Famitsu has traditionally given special treatment to titles where multiple reviewers converge on a perfect 10, but this time, while all four reviewers matched each other at 9, nobody handed out a perfect score. On 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board, users compared the score to other titles like Wolverine (35/40) and Patlabor, and the discussion also turned to how scores for past Fire Emblem entries have trended, along with skepticism about Famitsu’s review standards themselves.

    Wolverine — 9,9,9,8

    Fire Emblem — 9,9,9,9

    Patlabor — 7,7,7,6

Nah, it's nowhere near that level. Best case it's 'more average than you'd expect' — it feels dated and doesn't really have anything special going for it.

That's Raiders you're thinking of. Wolverine kept getting flak even after release — the character's sexual preferences, using the voice actor's likeness for the model, the water effects, all of it. It's stuck in 'playable but a bit iffy' territory, though some disc[-related] activists are being way too loud and noisy about it.

As for that company, Good Smile is kind of a wildcard player in this space — so even if their own titles get rejected, it's no big deal for them, and Famitsu doesn't have to pull punches; they just give the honest score.

You really think there's substance to that? I'm not a fan of Patlabor since it's pretty shoddy, but let me say this as someone who can actually tell: they clearly cared about the mechs, and the designs are a faithful recreation of the originals. Also, From[Software] and whatever that Xeno-something game is have pretty shoddy mechs too — like they just bolted on a bunch of tiny blocks.

So the conditions for an honest score seem to be:
    ○ It's a publisher Famitsu/Kadokawa won't suffer any consequences for being truthful about
    ○ The game is bad enough that anyone who plays it would notice
Only when both line up do you actually get a real score.
    101AnonymousSep 16, 2026 19:35
These scores are just boring now, is this M-1 [the comedy competition] or something? Guess they don't do the thing anymore where each reviewer's personality shows through with a spread like 9,6,9,3.

Nah, Sacred Stones, Radiant Dawn, and Shadow Dragon are rough. Though Radiant Dawn feels like a god-tier game, at least up until partway through.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

In Famitsu’s Cross Review, four reviewers each score a game out of 10, for a combined total out of 40. An “all-perfect” result — where every reviewer gives a 10 — is exceedingly rare in the feature’s history and has traditionally been treated as a special honor. This time’s total of 36 (9 points × 4) technically converts to 90 out of 100, a high score on paper, but the thread’s attention went instead to the fact that not a single reviewer awarded a perfect 10, with users comparing it to Wolverine’s past score (35) and to scores from earlier entries in the series, while also voicing distrust in Famitsu’s scoring standards themselves. Famitsu’s numbers don’t always line up with how a game is actually received or how well it sells after release, so readers are cautioned against judging a game’s quality by the score alone.

  • “We Cut His Meds and the Bedridden Patient Started Walking” — 5ch Splits Over Japan’s ‘Overbearing Medicine’

“We cut back on his medication, and the bedridden patient started walking.” An article in which psychiatrist Hideki Wada and Moyo Kimura, a former Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare medical officer, criticize the harms of excessive medication and treatment for the elderly — so-called “overbearing medicine” — became a hot topic on 5channel’s News Express+ board. In the thread, several posters shared firsthand accounts of care facilities and hospitals reaching for sedatives out of fear of lawsuits over falls, or simply due to staff shortages. Others pushed back, raising concerns that the “stopped his meds and he started walking” anecdote was spreading without any data to back it up, and warning of the dangers of patients discontinuing medication on their own judgment. Opinion in the thread was split.

Go to the hospital, see a doctor, take your medication properly — we’ve always believed that’s what it means to protect your health. But in Japan, where access to medical care is supposed to be so easy, why hasn’t the number of bedridden elderly people gone down?

Hideki Wada, a psychiatrist who has spent decades observing elder care on the front lines, and Moyo Kimura, a former medical officer at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, argue that “overbearing medicine” is behind this.

There are hospital cases, they say, where simply reducing an elderly patient’s medication was enough to get someone who had been bedridden walking again. Does more medical care really mean better health? The two experts challenge the “common sense” behind elder care in Japan.

Hospitals and care facilities have it easier when patients are bedridden.
Senile old folks especially are a problem if they move around, so they get sedated into compliance.

I mean, facilities do face lawsuit risk if a senile old person falls and has an accident, but if they're bedridden from the drugs, that's one less thing to worry about.

This is exactly the kind of thing old folks believe, so they stop taking their prescribed meds on their own judgment,
their symptoms come back and they end up at the hospital again,
and by then they've built up tolerance so the drug doesn't work as well, so the doctor prescribes something else — and then they stop that on their own judgment too.

Don't get fooled, guys — between a dementia patient who wanders and one who's bedridden, caregiving is overwhelmingly easier with the bedridden one. A wandering dementia patient means you have to watch them even during meals, which is a guaranteed path to quitting your job to be a caregiver.

    Re: #153

The Japan Medical Association gets singled out a lot, but
out in the regions, the real power players in medicine are the local university professors
who hold hiring authority and budget control, and can freely adjust how many doctors get dispatched to affiliated hospitals.

Because of that manpower gap, independent clinic doctors are in an overwhelmingly weak position (if a big hospital refuses to take a severe case, the clinic doctor is left with nowhere to turn).
The Medical Association is basically a guild that independent practitioners formed to help each other out.

…but the trend now is toward turning all independent practices into outpatient-only clinics and concentrating hospital beds at the big hospitals,
so really, it's the universities and big hospitals that still hold the stronger hand…

Background and key points of this discussion

The term “overbearing medicine” refers to how medication and testing beyond what’s necessary can actually strip elderly patients of their physical and mental function. Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare statistics have long shown a gap of roughly 8 to 9 years between average life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, and closing that gap has been treated as a policy challenge for medical and elder care. The thread split over the question of “who the prescriptions are really for” — some posters offered firsthand accounts of sedatives being used because of understaffed facilities or to avoid lawsuits, while others warned that stopping medication on one’s own judgment risks rebound symptoms and drug tolerance. It was also noted that there’s a structural incentive at play: hospitals actually lose revenue when they trim a patient’s medications during a hospital stay (due to a “medication-reduction bonus” system), so the situation isn’t as simple as “doctors prescribe drugs just to make money.” The article itself offers no data backing up the specific claim that reducing medication got a patient walking again — it’s worth keeping in mind that this is an individual anecdote.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Whatever’s Live G” board was originally meant for sports commentary, but during hours with nothing to comment on, threads like this one — filled with unrelated images and idle chatter — often spring up. This time too, the thread’s title, “Dabu-chan,” had almost nothing to do with its actual content, and the topic kept shifting as the conversation went on. Opinions split over how to judge Hololive’s character designs, with a divide between those who preferred simpler artwork and those who favored more ornate designs. Reactions to the Hololive x McDonald’s collaboration likewise showed a mix of favorable comments about the product itself and concerns about its impact on the brand’s image. Note that this article omits certain posts — including baseless claims naming real companies and crude remarks about real people’s appearance or occupations — out of consideration for fact-checking and decency.

  • Wolverine’s ¥30 Billion Budget, But the Lava Looks ‘PS2-Era’ — Overseas X Users Savage It, Post Goes Viral

Over footage from the new Wolverine game, a post by an overseas X (formerly Twitter) user claiming the lava and water effects look like graphics from the “PS2” or “N64” era went viral, racking up over 20,000 likes. On 5ch’s hardware/gaming board (Geha), reactions poured in from every angle — some said it looks worse than even the Ocarina of Time HD remake or the Wii’s Twilight Princess, others voiced concern over the state of developer Insomniac, and still others pointed out the ironic “boomerang” of PlayStation fans getting mocked with the very same insult they’ve long used against other platforms.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The phrase “PS2-level graphics” is a long-running cliché on 5ch’s hardware/industry board (Geha), where console performance debates have raged for years — and part of what fueled this thread’s excitement was the irony of PlayStation loyalists getting hit with the very same insult they’ve long used against rival platforms. Developer Insomniac is known for the Spider-Man series, and while some posters speculated a link to Sony’s major layoffs the previous year, the only confirmed fact is that those layoffs did happen — any causal connection to this footage’s quality remains pure speculation within the thread. Alongside this, defenses arguing that “gameplay matters more than graphics” appeared side by side with criticism of the game’s unusually easy difficulty, showing the reaction wasn’t simply split into good versus bad.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “[Sad News] Wolverine’s ¥30 Billion Budget, Yet Its PS2-Level Lava Graphics Get Mocked by Foreigners and Go Massively Viral lol“.

  • Regretting Not Switching from PS5 to PC: 5ch Thread “I Want to Punch My Past Self”

A thread on 5ch’s Hardware/Industry (Geha) board saw a PS5 owner pour out regret, saying “I should have switched to PC last year.” The poster explains that they seriously considered buying a PC last year, but held off and stuck with PS5 after Microsoft announced it would bring its exclusive titles to other platforms too. Since then, however, PC part prices have skyrocketed to nearly triple what they were, putting the build they wanted out of reach. Forza Horizon 6, which they’d been looking forward to, isn’t coming to PS5, and word that an anticipated Kojima title is heading to Xbox instead has left them lamenting, “I want to punch my past self.” The thread drew sympathy, along with advice to “just buy a cheap used PC now,” as well as debate over whether major titles’ PS5 releases are actually confirmed.

    1AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:01
Honestly, this time last year I was seriously agonizing over whether to buy one.
But then MS threw in the towel and made everything multiplat, so I figured PS5 would be fine going forward and passed on it.

I've always bought the PS versions of my games, Switch doesn't get AAA blockbusters, and Xbox was never even an option to begin with — so once the exclusives disappeared, of course PS was the only real choice.

In the end MS basically waved the white flag and made even the studios they bought multiplat, so I figured PS5 was fine and passed on a PC last year.
Now all of a sudden they're going exclusive again and handing Kojima's game to MS — it makes no sense.

That's just as true for Steam, Nintendo, Microsoft, or Epic.
GOG would be the exception, maybe.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This kind of “regret over missing the window to switch” tends to happen when two factors collide: soaring GPU and memory prices, and shifting exclusivity strategies from major platform holders. The poster’s reason for passing on a PC last year was that “the Microsoft camp abandoned exclusivity and went multiplatform” — but this time, as with the Kojima title, the opposite is happening, with exclusivity making a comeback, showing that platform strategy can flip more than once within a single year. The thread split between sympathy for the external factor of price spikes and harsher opinions along the lines of “isn’t this just self-inflicted from putting off the decision?” There’s also a point readers might easily misread: in response to a post claiming a “development executive confirmed” a certain title’s PS5 release, another poster pointed out that the actual authority to decide release platforms rests with the parent company — meaning a comment at an event or on social media isn’t the same as an official announcement.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hardware/Industry (Geha)) thread “I’m a PS5 user, but honestly I seriously regret not just switching to PC sooner.”

  • milet Reveals Depression Diagnosis — ‘My Body Stopped Moving,’ Says Singer Explaining Her Hiatus

Singer-songwriter milet revealed the circumstances behind her hiatus on Nippon TV’s “Yoru no Oto -TOKYO MIDNIGHT MUSIC-.” After five or six years of nonstop work since her debut, her body gradually stopped moving freely starting about a year before her break, and doctors diagnosed her with depression. Unable to speak clearly or get out of bed, and forced to miss a festival she was scheduled to perform at, her team decided to pause her activities in April 2025; she returned that August after four months of recuperation. On the forum, reactions ranged from opinions on her songs and live shows to plenty of jokes mixing her up with her “sister-like” contemporary Aimer, with opinions split on her singing ability.

Singer-songwriter milet appeared on the Nippon TV music program “Yoru no Oto -TOKYO MIDNIGHT MUSIC-” (airing Tuesdays at 24:24) on the 15th, where she revealed the reason behind her hiatus.

The show ran a feature on milet, who abruptly announced her hiatus on April 1, 2025, and returned that August after four months of rest. Asked why she decided to take the break, she revealed a change in her physical condition: “I’d been running flat out for five or six years since my debut, never looking back, writing and singing songs nonstop, but about a year before the hiatus my body stopped moving the way I wanted it to.”

She then confided, “When I went to the hospital, they told me I had depression,” adding, “I never thought I’d become depressed myself, but apparently one of the symptoms is that your body stops moving — I couldn’t even speak properly, and I got to the point where I couldn’t get out of bed at all. I ended up missing a festival I really wanted to play, and once my mind and body both hit their limit, the team decided it was best for me to rest for a while, so I was given some time off.”

    Background and Discussion Points

Depression doesn’t only cause low mood — it can also produce physical symptoms like an inability to move or speak clearly, and what milet described closely matches what’s medically known as the “somatization” of depression. Her demanding schedule, including expanding into film roles, was cited as a possible contributing factor, but no causal link beyond what she and the program described has been established. While thread reactions were split over her songs and live performances, most comments focused on jokes about mixing her up with Aimer, who debuted around the same time, with relatively few addressing her actual condition. Some comments linked depression to “being spoiled” or “mental weakness,” but since that reflects popular misconception rather than medical understanding, such remarks have been excluded from this article.

  • Was Zhao Yun Really the Only Decent, Competent General in the Three Kingdoms? 5ch: “His Best Episodes Are All From the Fictional Romance”

A post went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board asking whether Zhao Yun might be the only famous Three Kingdoms general who can be called both “competent” and “a genuinely good person.” Replies quickly nominated one contender after another — Zhang Liao, Xiahou Dun, Lu Kang, Yu Jin, Sun Jian, Zhuge Jin — but each pick came with a caveat: “competent, but his character’s questionable” or “seems like a good guy, but there’s not much evidence.” No one landed a knockout case. The debate kept circling back to one question: is the judgment based on the official history, or on the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which glorifies Liu Bei’s faction? As with Xu Shu’s famous “flight from Liu Bei” episode, some of these “nice stories” only appear in the Romance — and look quite different once you check the historical record.

    Re: #74
He's the guy Sun Quan actually listens to

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The biggest reason this kind of general-ranking debate splits opinion is that the Three Kingdoms era has two very different types of “source material.” Chen Shou’s official history, the Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), is a historical text based on contemporary records, while the 14th-century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms dramatizes events with Liu Bei’s faction cast as the heroes. Many of the “good guy” episodes widely known in Japan for figures like Zhao Yun and Xu Shu originate from the Romance, and the official history sometimes paints a rather different picture. Within the thread, multiple generals — such as Xu Shu and Xiahou Dun — came up as cases where the flattering tale in the Romance diverges from the historical record, and opinions split over which source should be the standard for judging “competence” or “good character.” The fact that later works, like Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga and Koei’s video games, have shaped how these generals are perceived today is also cited as a reason opinions vary from person to person.

  • Akita Governor: ‘No Public Bailout’ for J.League Club’s New Stadium, Even If It Goes Under

Regarding plans for a new stadium for J2 club Blaublitz Akita, Akita Governor Kenta Suzuki stated on the 15th that “we are not considering public financial support” even if the club’s management runs into difficulty. Public funding for the new stadium is conditional on the club first raising roughly 500 million yen in private funds — effectively putting the club on notice about its finances going forward as well. The remark came in response to a question during a prefectural assembly session about what would happen if the fundraising plan didn’t go as scheduled. On 5channel, discussion ranged widely — from opinions for and against using tax money to build a stadium at all, to concerns about the financial plan citing real examples of arenas elsewhere running deficits.

    9/16 (Wed) 10:00 — Asahi Shimbun

A new stadium is planned as the home base for J2 soccer club Blaublitz Akita. Akita Governor Kenta Suzuki said on the 15th that if the club running it were to find it difficult to continue operating, “we are not considering public financial support.” Public funding for the new stadium’s construction is conditional on the club raising about 500 million yen in private funds — effectively a warning shot regarding its management going forward.

During general questions in the prefectural assembly, assembly member Yuko Sakurada pressed Governor Suzuki for his views on scenarios such as the club failing to raise its target amount of private funding.

    Re: #70
    No, that's not it.
Once the 500 million is raised, that's only enough to start the design phase.
The club promised to raise the design costs itself.
So design only begins once the 500 million is collected within this year.
In other words, nothing moves forward until that 500 million is in hand.
And in the end, they need to raise 5 billion yen total before the stadium can actually be built.
    76AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:41
The prefecture's probably already got its hands full just covering the deficit at Akita's new arena.

Maintenance and operating costs run about 500 million yen a year.
Expected revenue is roughly 150 million yen, meaning around 350 million yen a year will have to come out of taxes.
The current prefectural gymnasium's maintenance and operating costs are only about 48 million yen a year. The prefecture's outlay is projected to be more than 8 times that.

    Re: #98
Don't you get that what's being questioned here is public value?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Akita City’s new stadium plan follows a staged structure: Blaublitz Akita must first raise about 500 million yen in private funds as a precondition for public funding, and only once the design costs are secured does full-scale fundraising (reportedly totaling around 5 billion yen) get underway. The thread also brought up real examples of publicly built arenas in Kagawa and Saga, where even high utilization rates haven’t been enough to cover maintenance costs through usage fees alone, leaving local governments to keep shouldering the difference. The debate extends beyond simply “should tax money be used to build a stadium” to the longer-term question of who keeps paying the operating costs after it’s built. The governor’s remarks can be read as a preemptive move to avoid setting a precedent where local government bails out the club if it fails to raise enough funds. Comments mocking the region itself based on demographics, along with baseless personal attacks on the governor or players, have been excluded from this piece.

Michiwaki Yutaka did turn pro at 16 and take a shot at Europe at 18, so he's kept making headlines one way or another
hoping he can finally break out at this tournament

Kosugi's at a crucial point with his club right now — why did they call him up?
    53AnonymousSep 16, 2026 18:43
Even among Olympic squad members, only 2-3 end up on the senior national team, so they might as well also call up players from an 'in-between' generation like Sano Kaishu was at the Paris Games, or late bloomers like Tanimura Kaina

Not in any real/meaningful sense, though

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Asian Games men’s soccer tournament runs under U23 rules that allow overage players, and countries like South Korea — where a medal can mean exemption from military service — tend to field their strongest possible squads, overage slots and all. Japan, by contrast, prioritized building up its 2028 Los Angeles Olympics generation and fielded a U21-only squad without using any overage slots. The “thin lineup” flagged in the thread is partly down to scheduling too — Europe-based players often can’t join until later in the tournament — so it isn’t necessarily just a sign of the federation not trying. The squad does include players with senior national team experience, such as Ozeki and Pisano Alex Yukifuyu Horio, so it’s easy to overlook that the generation’s top talent isn’t entirely missing.

My mom suddenly developed a soba allergy
and can't go to Japanese restaurants that serve soba anymore.
Even without eating any, the steam alone triggers an attack.
What really surprised us was when I went to an authentic soba shop and came home — apparently it had gotten on my clothes and body, and my mom, who was just at home, had an attack from that.
Ever since, soba shops are off-limits for the whole family, and if we absolutely have to go, we head straight to the laundry and bath the moment we get home.

Eating a lot of something can sometimes make an allergy suddenly kick in out of nowhere.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nippon TV’s “The! Sekai Gyouten News” allergy-testing segment has drawn big reactions before, with episodes featuring detailed celebrity test results becoming hot topics. This time, the focus was on cases where symptoms appear just from inhaling a smell or vapor without eating anything — and there are indeed medically documented cases of people reacting to vaporized compounds from things like soba broth, alcohol, or garlic. Where opinions on the thread split was over “crab sticks” (kanikama): while they don’t actually contain real crab meat, some products add “crab extract” for flavoring, and the easily-overlooked fact is that people with crab allergies could unknowingly eat it if they don’t check the ingredient label. There was also a story like Ogi from Ogiyahagi’s, who happily ate crab for years before suddenly developing an allergy — a reminder that food allergies can also appear suddenly later in life.
