  • Japan National Team Faces Venezuela with Kamada as Captain — 5ch: ‘Why Even Call Up Soma?’

On September 28, 2026 at 7:25 PM, the Japan national team took on Venezuela in a friendly broadcast on Nippon TV and streamed on TVer. Daichi Kamada started as the new captain, with Reo Bryan Kokubo in goal. The lineup also included a player just back from an ACL injury, and the live-commentary thread mostly focused on questions over why Yuki Soma got called up, along with debate over Kokubo’s performance between the posts. Some posters also worried about the lack of a clear leader marshaling the center-back line, turning the discussion into something bigger than just the result — a debate over the shape of the next-generation national team.

    Background and Talking Points

With several regulars sidelined by injury, this friendly against Venezuela was framed as a proving ground under new captain Daichi Kamada, and many in the thread read it as “a match for testing the young players.” Opinions split over Yuki Soma’s call-up largely because it had been a while since his last national-team appearance — in reality he’s still only 29, the same age as Kamada, Itakura, and Go Watanabe. Goalkeeper Reo Bryan Kokubo, whose father is from South Africa, drew praise such as “he was the starting keeper in the English top flight” and “maybe the best GK Japan’s ever had,” though some also flagged weaknesses in his decision-making, leaving a mix of hope and concern. The comments about a missing defensive leader also point to a structural issue facing the whole national team: developing a successor generation to Shogo Taniguchi and Takehiro Tomiyasu. It read less as criticism of any one player than as worry over a stalled generational handover.

  • Track Gold Medalist Mako Fukube Misheard as “Ms. Kikuchi” — TBS Announcer’s Slip Sparks Online Stir

In the women’s 100m hurdles final at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Mako Fukube (30) won gold with a time of 12.74 seconds, sealing a Japanese one-two finish alongside Hitomi Nakashima. During the TBS network broadcast, a female announcer repeatedly mispronounced Fukube’s name as “Ms. Kikuchi,” which online commenters noted matches the name of a real medical condition, “Kikuchi disease,” sparking a stir online. The thread split between those who found it troubling to be called by a disease’s name and those saying “let it slide, it’s a minor thing,” with frustration over TBS’s commentary in general also boiling over.

Mixing up a disease name with a person's name feels kind of discriminatory and tasteless.

    Re: #134
Though it's somewhat unavoidable — the disease was discovered by Dr. Masahiro Kikuchi and colleagues, hence the name

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kikuchi disease (Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease) is a real lymph-node condition first reported in 1972 by pathologist Masahiro Kikuchi and colleagues — it just happens to share its name with the surname “Kikuchi.” In this case, it appears the announcer meant to say Fukube’s name, but the more familiar term “Kikuchi disease” slipped out instead. Opinions in the thread were split between those brushing it off as a simple slip of the tongue and those voicing discomfort at an athlete being called by a disease’s name. There’s also a history of complaints about TBS’s commentary style — loud shouting and awkwardly staged broadcast moments — and this mistake is being discussed as part of that pattern. It should be noted that how Fukube herself reacted, and whether TBS offered any explanation or apology, are not covered in the source material and remain unknown.

  • MARVEL Tōkon Concurrent Players Crash to Around 100 — Fans Fear the Game May Be Getting Shut Down

The fighting game “MARVEL Tōkon,” published by a Sony subsidiary, has seen its concurrent player count crash to around 100, sparking discussion on the Japanese hardware/gaming-industry forum board. Developed by Arc System Works, the game reportedly had about 25,000 concurrent players right after launch, meaning the vast majority of its playerbase has dropped off in under two months. Posters were split on the cause: some blamed the mandatory PSN account linking, while others argued the game’s content itself simply didn’t land. With a season pass featuring additional characters planned through December 2027, some worried whether the service can keep running that long, or whether it will meet the same fate as “Concord,” which was pulled from sale and refunded shortly after launch.

Which is the lesser evil — keep running it, or refund everyone?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

MARVEL Tōkon is a PS5 fighting game published by a Sony subsidiary studio and developed by Arc System Works, a developer with a strong track record in the fighting genre. It reportedly had around 25,000 concurrent players right after launch, but by the time of this thread, that number had crashed to the low hundreds in under two months. This drop was the main point of debate among posters, with some pointing to the mandatory PSN account linking, and others arguing that since even the PS5 version’s sales were weak, the problem must lie with the game itself. Another Sony-published Marvel title, “Wolverine,” has also reportedly struggled, and several posts noted that this marks two Marvel titles in a row running into trouble. With a season pass featuring additional characters planned through December 2027, attention is now on whether the service can keep running that long, or whether it will meet an ending similar to “Concord,” which was pulled from sale and refunded shortly after launch.

  • Which J-pop Singers Don’t Use Vibrato? 5channers Say ‘Aimyon’

A thread on 5ch’s music board asking users to name “J-pop singers who don’t use much vibrato” quickly filled up with names spanning generations and genres — Aimyon, Yorushika, ikura, Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi, SEKAI NO OWARI’s Fukase, RADWIMPS, BUMP OF CHICKEN, Official HIGE DANdism, and Spitz, among others. The discussion went beyond a simple list, branching into why singers who avoid vibrato tend to be well-liked, whether “kobushi” (a melisma-like vocal flourish common in Japanese singing) counts as a form of vibrato, and how aging affects the voice — turning a thread about personal taste into one about vocal technique.

    Background and Key Points

Vibrato is a vocal technique involving a fine, rapid wavering of pitch, long prized as an ornamental flourish in enka and opera. Since the 1990s, however, rock acts and singer-songwriters have increasingly favored a more restrained style that deliberately avoids it. The thread brought together names from recent artists like Aimyon and Yorushika alongside figures from earlier generations, such as the Shibuya-kei scene and Elephant Kashimashi’s Hiroji Miyamoto, suggesting that non-vibrato singers turn up across genres and eras. At the same time, posters disagreed on whether “kobushi” should count as a type of vibrato, and some pointed out that aging vocal cords can weaken and start producing an unintentional, constant vibrato. It’s worth noting that how deliberately any given artist avoids vibrato is a matter of listener impression rather than something the artists themselves have confirmed, so it shouldn’t be read as settled fact.

  • Shohei Ohtani Finishes Season Ranked 5th in WAR — 5ch Asks: ‘Is There Even a Point to the Two-Way Thing Anymore?’

With the 2026 MLB season now over, Shohei Ohtani settling for 5th place in the overall WAR rankings — the stat meant to capture a player’s total value — became a hot topic on 5ch’s “Whatever Live” sports board. Breaking down the numbers, his batting WAR was 3.7 (40th) and his pitching WAR was 2.9 (34th) — neither figure is anything special on its own for a two-way player. It also came out that teammate Seiya Suzuki actually beat Ohtani in batting WAR alone, and the thread split over whether the two-way experiment is still worth it, and how to judge a season plagued by injuries.

(Note: Mijirowski picked up his 16th win of the season in his final start)

    93AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:31
    Re: #86
In the past, even narrowing it down to just batting WAR, it was a total blowout [in Ohtani's favor]
I still don't think Ohtani's overall combined value is actually below Suzuki's even now, but the fact that he lost even in the batting-only comparison is a decline nobody would've imagined before
    96AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:34
Ohtani always prioritized sleep for recovery above everything else. But now that his second child has been born, there's probably crying at night, and he's probably too smitten to help it — his daily rhythm must have taken at least some hit.
It might not just be aging; his priorities in life may have shifted too.

Either way, looking forward to next season.

Suzuki's having a career year in his contract year (lit. "job-hunting year")

    98AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:36
    Re: #97
Sure, that's how it'll go if he commits to being a batter only
But if he insists on sticking with the two-way thing, it's obvious he'll get injured again next year too
Even in his younger years there were barely any seasons where he actually managed to balance both
    103AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:41
As a DH-only guy, even pulling off a 50-50 season won't get his fWAR to 10, so that path's a dead end
If two-way is off the table, playing defense is the only way left to reach fWAR 10
    105AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:43

At the end of the day, staying injury-free is the single most essential requirement for a player to really succeed

There's not a single injury-prone player who became truly great
Every player who gets called a legend stays completely injury-free right up until their later years

No matter how well you hit or pitch, if you get injured it's all wasted
It all goes down the drain
    109AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:58
    Re: #108
Wait, is Ohtani not already a legend?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

WAR is a metric that converts multiple elements — batting, baserunning, defense, and pitching — into a single number measured against a replacement-level player, and the fewer chances a player gets to play, the harder it is for that number to grow. Because Ohtani was coming off an injury and had his starts and innings limited, his pitching WAR was always likely to come in low; and since he’s DH-only as a batter, there’s no bonus from defensive value built into the metric, so even strong batting numbers don’t easily translate into a top batting-WAR ranking. The point of contention in the thread was whether the value of a two-way player should be measured by “batting WAR plus pitching WAR combined,” or whether he should be judged by the same standard as single-position players — and by design, WAR itself doesn’t clearly settle which approach is correct. It’s also worth keeping in mind that this was a year in which playing time itself was reduced due to injury, which was one factor behind the drop in ranking.

  • One Piece’s Latest Chapter Sparks Debate: The Right Hand He Cut Off… Rolls Away as a Left Hand

In the latest chapter of “One Piece,” currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, Zoro appears to slice off an enemy’s right hand — but in the very next panel, the severed hand lying on the ground is drawn as a left hand. Social media users spotted the discrepancy, and it quickly became a hot topic on 5ch as well. Thread opinions were split over whether it was a simple drawing error or an intentional plot hint, though the prevailing view leaned toward “no defending this,” backed by images showing the enemy’s hands intact and matched up just a few chapters earlier. Still, some posters shrugged it off, noting it would likely just get fixed in the collected volume.

Turns out both hands were left hands all along

    Background and Discussion Points

One Piece currently runs on a biweekly publication schedule, with Eiichiro Oda handling most of the artwork while assistants and editors check panel-to-panel consistency. This time, the topic was a panel showing the enemy’s severed hand lying on the ground as a left hand, immediately after a scene depicting Zoro cutting off the enemy’s right hand. Thread posters were split — some argued “a slip like this at this point is unusual,” while others floated the idea that it might be foreshadowing — but images showing the enemy’s hands intact and matched up just a few chapters earlier suggest it’s more likely a simple drawing error. As commenters noted with examples from other long-running series like Dragon Ball, this kind of slip isn’t unusual for weekly or biweekly manga, and is typically corrected when the chapters are compiled into a collected volume. What often trips readers up is the assumption that a famous creator wouldn’t make mistakes — a premise that makes minor art inconsistencies like this one especially prone to going viral as a talking point.

Rock band HOUND DOG’s official website was updated on the 28th, reporting that disruptive behavior by some concertgoers had occurred at its shows and announcing that those responsible had been banned from attending future events.

The band had also reported on the 3rd of this month that it had received a large number of opinions and complaints from other attendees regarding disruptive behavior by some concertgoers.

    Background and Key Discussion Points

HOUND DOG is a rock band that started out playing together as amateurs in the 1980s, scoring hits like “Uwaki na Paret” (Cheating Palette) and “Anata Dake Mitsumeteru” (Only Watching You). The band broke up at one point and the split escalated into a lawsuit; today only founding member Kohei Otomo remains, performing with support musicians. Commenters repeatedly noted that the band is now “essentially a solo act” — a fact that may surprise readers who only know it by name. Debate centered on two points: whether banning attendees was a proportionate response to the disruptive behavior, and whether alienating the band’s longtime hardcore fans could hurt ticket sales going forward, with opinions split in the thread. Unverified rumors also circulated about the reasons behind the breakup, but some details conflicted with known facts such as the timing of a marriage, so that account shouldn’t be treated as confirmed.

  • Saga’s ‘Yamataikoku Reborn’ Exhibit Reignites 5ch’s Kinai vs. Kyushu Location Debate

Saga Prefecture’s Yoshinogari Town is hosting a special exhibition, “Yamataikoku Reborn: The Lands of Toyo and Tango,” comparing the Yoshinogari ruins with archaeological sites in Buzen/Bungo and Tango, running through November 8. The exhibit focuses on the Yayoi through early Kofun periods — the era surrounding the Yamataikoku described in the Chinese chronicle “Records of Wei: Account of the Wa” — displaying jar coffins, bronze spearheads, and other artifacts from various regions that reveal both traces of exchange and distinct local cultures. In response, 5ch threads reignited the perennial debate over Yamataikoku’s location. Alongside the Kinai theory (based on the Makimuku ruins and Hashihaka Tomb) and the Kyushu theory (which emphasizes the Wei chronicle’s account), discussion expanded to cover genome analysis results and the origin of the name “Yamato,” with no resolution in sight.

A special exhibition, “Yamataikoku Reborn: The Lands of Toyo and Tango,” comparing the nationally designated special historic site Yoshinogari Ruins (Kanzaki City and Yoshinogari Town, Saga Prefecture) with archaeological sites from the Buzen/Bungo region and the Tango region of northern Kyoto Prefecture, is being held through November 8 at the Yoshinogari Hills Historical Park east entrance and the History Park Center’s “Multipurpose Room,” among other venues. (By Mei Tateyama)

This is the 18th installment of the “Yamataikoku Reborn” special exhibition series. This time, the focus is on the period from the Yayoi era through the early Kofun period — the era in which the “Records of Wei: Account of the Wa” places Yamataikoku.

The “Land of Toyo” display shows that, while there is evidence of exchange with northern Kyushu, a culture distinct from that of the Yoshinogari ruins developed there, as seen in differences such as jar coffins (kamekan) and settlement layouts. A pair of “medium-wide bronze spearheads,” about 80cm and 70cm long, are analyzed as having been used in rituals.

Ainu (excluding Hokkaido settlers), Ryukyu, and Kyushu people show a higher concentration of Jomon ancestry, while Kinai (the Kansai region) leans more toward continental-immigrant (Yayoi/Toraijin) ancestry.

I went to Hashihaka Tomb the other day. I was originally Team North Kyushu, but I guess once you've actually visited a place in person, you can't help leaning toward it a little.

Assuming Princess Momoso really is the one buried in Hashihaka Tomb, unless someone can clearly explain why she'd be buried in a tomb fit for a great king, it seems hard to overturn the Yamato (Kinai) theory.

Amaterasu Omikami is a metaphor for Empress Jito. Likewise, Emperor Jinmu's eastern expedition mirrors the Jinshin War, with Emperor Monmu cast as Jinmu, grandson of Amaterasu. The creation narrative in the Kojiki/Nihon Shoki was essentially crafted under Empress Jito's direction as a story glorifying her own lineage.

In other words, trying to match Amaterasu or Jinmu to actual historical relics is pointless.

It's not about strictly mapping the genealogy — the point is just to hint that this kind of relationship exists. The defeat of Nigihayahi's clan, a divine lineage, represents the defeat of Prince Otomo, a relative but not a direct descendant of Empress Jito. It's all a story built for the grandson Jito doted on.

If we're talking about grandsons, I kind of feel like it'd be enough to just say Emperor Shomu — grandson of both Genmei and Fujiwara no Fuhito — is Ninigi, Amaterasu's grandson, and that the story ties into the descent from heaven to legitimize his succession…

Apparently the kingdom that actually had contact with Japan at the time was Wu, and Wei was trying to build a new connection. So it's a pretty shaky record — it only survives because the Wei-Jin dynasty was later recognized as legitimate. We'd need to check Wu's records to really know.

The Nihon Shoki records that, in the 4th century (?), there was a country ruled by a queen in Yamato-gun, so it wouldn't be strange for a shamaness-ruled country to have existed in northern Kyushu.

That said, the exact location and name of that country are unknown from any source other than the Wei chronicle — and even the Wei chronicle itself doesn't pin down the location.

    Re: #175
Well, I'm talking about how distinctive that is. The Jochi Ulus in Mongolia also had mobile palaces and lived while moving them around. Europe once had a tradition of mobile courts too. These all stem from the influence of nomadic, non-sedentary culture.
    177AnonymousSep 27, 2026 15:43
    Re: #176
In Japan's case, though, there's the grim custom of 'mogari' (temporary interment) for the previous ruler's funeral — I think it comes from their view of death and the afterlife, not from any nomadic, non-sedentary culture.
    178AnonymousSep 27, 2026 15:51
    Re: #177
That's a baseless stretch. In ancient Japan, what's now dismissed as the crude folk-belief of 'kegare' (ritual impurity) was actually the mainstream view. And honestly, if you chalk up every single event to some ideology or policy, you're basically denying any real analysis.
    334AnonymousSep 28, 2026 05:49
    Re: #177
I also think the palace-relocation-per-reign custom had strong religious meaning. Yamato had a culture where shamanesses held a lot of power, so it probably had a purification/impurity-cleansing meaning — at least before Emperor Ojin. The Kawachi court was unusually martial for its era, so it might've been a bit different there.
    197AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:35
'Yamato' (山戸, 'mountain gate') is considered a generic term, similar to 'minato' (水の戸, 'water gate'). Back then, wetlands spread widely, and Osaka Bay was much closer to the Nara Basin than it is today. So it's reasonable to understand the 'Yamato' of the Yamato regime as a place name specific to the Nara Basin.

Of course, there's some chance the name was borrowed from somewhere else, but looking at other examples in Japan, deliberately relabeling a place with a name from elsewhere seems pretty unlikely.
    198AnonymousSep 27, 2026 17:43
    Re: #197
Apparently there actually aren't that many surviving 'Yamato' place names across the country, for something supposedly generic.

By the way, let me share a fairly old paper (?) that's been posted a few times in previous Yamataikoku threads.

'A Study of the Yamato Place Name'

Of course, I don't personally agree wholeheartedly with everything written in it, and there are plenty of parts I find unconvincing, but the overall gist should be worth a read as reference material.

It's a short piece, so if you've got some free time, give it a look.

    361AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:37
    Re: #198
This is interesting. The 'Yamato' place name comes paired with 'Miwa,' as in Miwa Shrine, where Okuninushi — said to be from the Izumo lineage — is enshrined. Fukuoka Prefecture's Yamato-gun likewise has an Ogami-go, once called 'Ohomiwa.' Nearby, in Shiratori-go, there's also Shiratori Shrine, which enshrines Yamato Takeru — suggesting the Kinai 'Yamato' place name was transplanted there.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The debate over Yamataikoku’s location is a long-running controversy stemming from the fact that the directional and distance descriptions in the Chinese-side source “Records of Wei: Account of the Wa” contain contradictions and can’t pin down a location on their own. It broadly splits into the Kinai theory, which favors the Makimuku ruins in the Nara Basin, and the Kyushu theory, which places it in northern Kyushu. Some argue that Hashihaka Tomb, near the Makimuku ruins, is Himiko’s grave, but no grave marker or similar artifact directly identifying the occupant has been found — the claim rests solely on inferences from its age and scale. The genome analysis mentioned in the thread (the BBJ Japanese genome study published in November 2024) shows that the Kinai region has a stronger concentration of continental-immigrant genetic traits, while Kyushu, Okinawa, and Hokkaido show stronger Jomon-derived traits — but this is easily misread, since it isn’t direct evidence of Yamataikoku’s location. The Yoshinogari exhibition itself likewise isn’t meant to settle the location debate; it simply displays artifacts showing regional exchange and cultural differences within Kyushu.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (News Speed+) thread “[Saga] Reflecting on Yamataikoku: Comparing the archaeological sites of “Yoshinogari,” “Buzen/Bungo,” and “Tango” — artifacts showing traces of exchange and different cultures” on 5ch.

    Re: #101
That's probably what caused the rift between them.
Hamaguchi wants to put in long hours on set.
Arino wanted to wrap things up early because of his other work, like "Section Chief Arino" (his Game Center CX persona) and jobs up in Hokkaido.

    Background and Talking Points

Hamaguchi Yu left Shochiku Entertainment, his longtime talent agency, in 2022, but Yoiko itself never disbanded and his double act with Arino is still ongoing. This new show is a location project following the couple’s everyday dates, and the thread showed little interest in the show’s actual content, instead gravitating toward opinions on Hamaguchi as a person and how his career has evolved. There’s been little official detail on the circumstances of his agency departure, so claims circulating in the thread — like the idea he was let go over workplace harassment — remain unconfirmed hearsay and shouldn’t be treated as established fact. Comments about his married life with Minami and whether they have children also contradicted each other, so that unverified information has been left out of this writeup.

  • Kuwata’s Exit as Giants Farm Manager Chalked Up to ‘Failed Player Development’ — 5ch: ‘Kuwata’s Just Not Cut Out for Coaching Prospects’

It’s been reported that the Giants front office judged Kuwata Masumi’s tenure as farm team manager a case of “failed player development,” prompting his departure — despite the farm squad finishing first in the Eastern League in team ERA, batting average, and stolen bases. The report also touches on rumors of friction with former first-team manager Abe Shinnosuke. On 5ch’s Giants threads, the news set off a wave of doubts about Kuwata’s development skills, and comments from his successor, new farm manager Ishii Takuro, who let slip “No, I’m exhausted” in a solo interview, also became a talking point. Meanwhile, the first team is in the final stretch of the pennant race, two games behind the first-place Tigers with four games remaining, and surrounding news — like Kazuma Okamoto’s rookie MLB season wrap-up and the Carp’s Sasaki pulling out due to illness — was also circulating.

Every guy Kuwata sent up to the first team last year turned out useless, but most of the guys 'Tonro' (a mocking nickname for a staff member) sent up this year were actually decent.

Probably 'Unagi' (eel — a nickname, apparently for someone on the coaching staff) was the one vetoing the players Kuwata wanted to call up lol

    it's already over.
    65AnonymousSep 28, 2026 17:59
    We'll win the head-to-head matchup, so it's effectively just a 1-game gap.
    77AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:05

    80AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:07
Playing baseball like this, the Carp really have no shot at climbing back, do they.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kuwata Masumi was once a star ace for the Giants, and after retiring he served as pitching coach and in other roles before taking over as farm team manager this season. The fact that his departure came despite the farm squad finishing first in the Eastern League in team ERA, batting average, and stolen bases has drawn attention to the gap between the on-paper numbers and the front office’s “failed player development” assessment. Reports of friction with former manager Abe Shinnosuke have also surfaced, suggesting the evaluation may have hinged not just on results but on how well he coordinated with the first team and its player-usage philosophy. While many thread comments question Kuwata’s development chops, some also praised his successor, new farm manager Ishii Takuro, for how quickly the first team uses players once they’re called up — suggesting that how well a farm system runs depends not only on the manager’s own ability but on how it meshes with the first team’s usage policy. Meanwhile, as of September 28 the first team sits two games behind the first-place Tigers with four games left in a tight pennant race, and the farm-management story was unfolding alongside that tension.
