  • Turned his life around going from NEET to building maintenance, 5ch user opens up about certifications and salary

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Nova Speed VIP” board started by a poster who says they turned their life around by going from being a NEET to working as a “biruman” (building maintenance technician). The poster reveals that at 34 they became a full-time employee for the first time, and are using certifications like the electrician’s license as a stepping stone toward the Building Maintenance Manager qualification (“biru-kan”) and the Class 3 Electrical Chief Engineer license (“Denken”). Their current annual salary is said to be in the 3.5-million-yen range, with savings of around 6 million yen. The thread saw an extended exchange, with experienced posters weighing in on how to obtain these certifications, how common they are in the industry, and the reality behind the job’s reputation as “easy work.”

    Seriously recommend this for NEETs
Pay's low but the work is easy

How much have you managed to save up?

Just plain savings, maybe around 6 million yen

    What about the not-so-plain kind?
    19AnonymousOct 7, 2026 12:24
I see. So the electrician's license was the hardest one, huh?

    Re: #19
Nah, haven't gotten that one yet — I just sat the exam for biru-kan (Building Maintenance Manager) this time.
Of the ones I've actually passed, Fire Prevention Equipment Class 1 "Ko-4" was the toughest.
And Ko-4 requires you to already hold the electrician's license just to be eligible to take it.
    25AnonymousOct 7, 2026 12:26
Apparently companies are struggling to find anyone who holds biru-kan.
A building-maintenance buddy of mine sometimes asks me to refer someone who has it, but how would I know anyone?
    35AnonymousOct 7, 2026 12:29
    Re: #25
Yeah, biru-kan holders really are rare.
In this industry the holder rate is roughly:
    Biru-kan — about 1 in 7 or 8
    Denken — about 1 in 10

I did overnight-shift building maintenance for close to 10 years.
On weekend days when I was the only one on duty, I'd basically sleep all day at work from morning to night, so I used that time to study instead lol.
Thanks to that I got the Class 3 Electrical Chief Engineer license in 2 years.
On weekdays too, I'd study at my desk from 5pm, when the day-shift guy went home, until I went to sleep.
I honestly think there's no easier job anywhere in the world.

    Re: #111
The electrician's license alone gets you in.
Honestly, for the actual day-to-day work, that might be the only one you really need

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Building maintenance technicians (“biruman”) mainly handle inspections and patrols of electrical, HVAC, and fire-safety equipment, and it’s a field where pay and job duties hinge heavily on which certifications you hold — things like the electrician’s license, hazardous materials handler license, the Building Maintenance Manager qualification (“biru-kan,” formally the Building Environmental Sanitation Management Technician), fire prevention equipment specialist licenses, and Denken (Electrical Chief Engineer). The thread’s original poster describes stacking up certifications starting from the electrician’s license, noting that while the job is easy to enter even without qualifications or experience, few people hold biru-kan or Denken, which makes those credentials valuable. What split opinion in the thread was how trustworthy the “easy job” label really is, with some pointing out that how much free time you actually get during a shift depends heavily on the luck of which site you’re assigned to (“site gacha”). The poster also shared specific figures like annual salary and savings, but readers should keep in mind this is one individual’s personal account and doesn’t guarantee industry-wide averages or conditions.

  • Qilin Ransomware Gang’s Core Member Arrested — “Japan Has the World’s Worst Security,” He Says

A core member of the ransomware group “Qilin,” allegedly linked to cyberattacks on Asahi Breweries and others, has reportedly been taken into custody and spoke to the media. He is said to have described Japan’s computer security setup as “the worst in the world.” In the thread, posters shared claims that the individual is a Russian national who was arrested in Osaka and extradited to Germany, with some suggesting ransomware proceeds are helping fund Russia and North Korea. The discussion also touched on criticism of Japan’s digital administration and the state of cybersecurity talent development, with opinions split.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Qilin is a group known for double-extortion ransomware attacks on companies, and its name had already come up in connection with the attack on the Asahi Group. The “world’s worst” assessment in the headline comes from the arrested individual himself — worth noting this is the attacker’s own self-assessment, not an objective ranking from any third-party body. The claim circulating in the thread that “a Russian national was arrested in Osaka and extradited to Germany” comes from posters’ own information and could not be confirmed in the article itself. The idea that ransomware proceeds help fund states like Russia and North Korea is a point experts have raised repeatedly, but how much of that applies here can’t be judged from this thread alone. While many commenters criticized Japan’s digital administration and lagging security measures, the discussion also drifted at times into unrelated commentary about individual politicians.

  • Iguchi Japan Unveils Roster — 5ch Reacts: “Is This a Farm Team?”

The national team roster under manager Tadahito Iguchi was announced, and reactions poured in on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. With relatively obscure names like Taguchi as batting coach and Kurano as pitching coach, comments like “Is this a farm team?” started popping up, and questions flew about why Tatsumi was picked for the over-age slot instead of Watarai or Shuto. Alongside complaints about how many low-profile players made the cut, posters also got into the weeds debating the projected starting lineup — turning the thread into a broader challenge of the national team’s whole selection policy.

    Re: #106
That's basically "not interested in baseball" territory.

    Background and Key Points

The “OA slot” is short for “over-age slot,” a system best known from soccer’s Olympic squads that lets age-restricted national teams add a limited number of older players as an exception. In recent years it’s also been adopted by baseball national teams built mainly around young players. What split the thread was whether this slot even needed to be used at all, and whether Tatsumi was a reasonable pick for it — some speculated that Shuto or Isobata had turned the spot down, but none of that goes beyond unsubstantiated guesswork. The barrage of “lol”s aimed at the batting and pitching coaches’ names wasn’t a comment on their ability — it was just poking fun at how similar their names sounded — and it’s easy to misread that as genuine criticism of their coaching.

  • OCHA NORMA, Nakajima Saki Set for Shinjuku Gyoen Event — 5ch Fans: ‘Lineup’s Way Too Thin’

The environmental event “GTF Green Challenge Day 2026” has been announced for November 7–8, 2026, at Shinjuku Gyoen, with OCHA NORMA, Nakajima Saki, Morito Chisaki, and Koseki Mai confirmed as performers. Taking part itself is free, but visitors must pay the Shinjuku Gyoen garden admission fee separately. On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, fans voiced confusion that what used to be a "reward event" where fans could mingle with trainees is now centered on veteran (OG) members, alongside complaints that this year’s date is a month earlier than usual and that the lineup feels underwhelming — with some also questioning why Morito and Koseki keep being paired together as a fixed set.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“GTF Green Challenge Day” is an annual autumn event held at Shinjuku Gyoen centered on environmental conservation, and in recent years Hello! Project has stayed involved by having trainees and current members perform on a rotating, day-by-day basis. As pointed out in the thread, the 2026 event falls in November, about a month earlier than in past years. Opinions in the thread split between those who felt the lineup paled in comparison to the days when trainees took center stage, and debate over whether Morito Chisaki and Koseki Mai appearing together has become too much of a fixed pairing. It’s also worth noting that while taking part is free, the Shinjuku Gyoen garden admission fee (¥500 for adults, etc.) is required separately — a detail clearly stated in the official announcement but barely mentioned in the thread, making it an easy point to overlook.

Pianist Kyohei Sorita (32) has been indicted without arrest on charges of violating traffic law (grossly exceeding the speed limit on the Shuto Expressway), and NHK has announced it is pulling him from the Oct. 12 broadcast of the “NHK School Music Contest” (Nコン). Apparently the limit there was 60 km/h, so yeah, that's pretty bad.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Being “indicted without arrest” is a form of indictment that doesn’t involve arrest or detention, and Sorita is believed to have continued his normal life throughout the investigation. In criminal trials, the presumption of innocence applies until a verdict is finalized, but broadcasters often decide to pull a performer without waiting for a legal conviction, citing program credibility and compliance concerns. Opinions on the thread split between those saying “It’s strange to drop him before a verdict” and those saying “Holding off on public appearances once someone is indicted is the standard response.” Part of the backdrop here is that Sorita placed 2nd at the 2021 Chopin International Competition, and since the School Music Contest is an educational program covering choir and music activities at schools nationwide, performers’ social credibility tends to be weighted more heavily.

    42AnonymousOct 7, 2026 14:44
Didn't realize such a dangerous poisonous plant was just casually growing around there.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Aconite (torikabuto) is a poisonous plant that grows widely across Japan, containing the toxic compound aconitine, which depending on the amount ingested can cause respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. It closely resembles the edible wild greens nirinso and momijigasa, and in the period before flowering — when only leaves are present — even experts reportedly have a hard time telling them apart; similar accidental-poisoning cases are reported almost every year. In the thread, opinions were split between those who saw this incident as simple misidentification and those who suspected it might have been intentional, done for suicide or for a video. However, the article itself gives no details on the circumstances, so both views remain speculation. Some also saw the decision not to disclose the town’s name as a considerate measure to avoid identifying the individual. This incident is a fresh reminder of the dangers of casually picking and cooking plants found growing in the wild.

Who's this actress once hailed as a "Kokumin-teki Bishoujo" (a "nationally beloved beauty," a title tied to a famous talent contest)?

    Background and Talking Points

This thread is the 21,924th installment of “Sales Discussion,” an ongoing freeform chat series on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, where a culture has taken root of regulars posting images and updates on whatever’s on their mind rather than sticking to one topic. The nicknames “Taishou” (“the Boss”) and “Daijin” (“the Minister”) that keep popping up refer to well-known regular posters in the thread — not obvious to first-time readers. The Komeda Coffee x Chibo collab item mentioned is quoted from an official account announcement, with limited-quantity sales said to start October 14, 2026. The news about Inori Minase’s appearance on Nogizaka46’s radio show is likewise based on an official program announcement. Note that early in the thread there was a post naming a specific individual and alleging a connection to past threatening posts; since this claim is unsubstantiated and could identify that individual, it has not been included in this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “š‘åã‚ÉZ‚ñ‚Å‚¢‚é‚È‚ç“úX’Ê“VŠt‚⓹“Ú–x‚̉摜‚ðã‚°‚é‚Í‚¸‚¾ ”„ã‹c˜_21924š.”

  • Kazushige Nagashima Admits ‘Not a Single Day Without Pain’ — 5ch Reacts: ‘Wait, He’s Already 60?!’

Former pro baseball player and TV personality Kazushige Nagashima (60) revealed on the October 6 broadcast of “Odoru! Sanma Gotten!!” that “there isn’t a single day I’m not in pain.” He said that on top of presbyopia, he also suffers from night blindness, and that his hip pain is the toughest to deal with — comments that sparked discussion on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+ board. In the thread, some reacted with “Wow, he’s already 60,” really feeling the weight of his age, while others floated a theory that steroids caused his hip pain — though this was met with pushback claiming he “was just born with a shallow hip socket.” The conversation gradually expanded to include tales of tinnitus and sudden sensorineural hearing loss from habitual earbud use.

Kazushige Nagashima: “Not a Single Day Without Pain” — Opens Up About Health Issues: “Presbyopia, Plus Night Blindness,” “Hip Pain Is the Worst”

Former pro baseball player and TV personality Kazushige Nagashima (60) appeared on Nippon TV’s “Odoru! Sanma Gotten!!” (Tuesdays, 8 PM) on the 6th, where he opened up about his physical ailments.

The episode was themed “Celebrities Whose Health Takes a Quick Turn for the Worse: Secret Body Woes Special,” with Angirls, Harisenbon, and others also sharing their own concerns.

A Giants coach back then said that in terms of raw talent alone, Ichimo was number one.
Though he also said Ichimo was no good as a player because he hated practicing and wouldn't listen to anyone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nagashima has spoken about his hip pain before, and it’s well known that he underwent joint replacement surgery. The thread’s “steroids caused it” theory is on shaky ground — the main cause of hip osteoarthritis is typically congenital skeletal factors (such as acetabular dysplasia), and indeed some replies pushed back on it. Night blindness is more often genetic than caused by nutritional deficiency, and with modern diets, nutrition-related cases are rare. The conversation also wandered into linking habitual earbud use with sudden sensorineural hearing loss — worth noting that medicine hasn’t firmly established that causal link, and individual workplace anecdotes don’t necessarily generalize. The remark that “if it came down to talent alone, Ichimo was number one,” attributed to a Giants coach, is an anecdote that’s been quoted before, and it resurfaced again in this thread.

Not sure if Tanimoto and Ono got bundled in as the mainstream-friendly faces, or if this is a quiet nudge toward "graduating" from the group

    Background and Key Talking Points

“Nidaime! Ramen D: Date Ippei” is the latest installment in Nittele Plus’s foodie drama series “Ramen D,” a franchise that has brought in celebrity regulars in past seasons as well. This time, a young All Japan Pro Wrestling wrestler takes the lead, with Tsubaki Factory’s Yui Kawanishi announced as the heroine-equivalent Haruka Miyoshi, and fellow members Ami Tanimoto and Mizuho Ono set to make guest appearances. The group’s new single “Ai = Un + En + On” (“Love = Luck + Bond + Gratitude”) was chosen as the theme song. Since the broadcast airs on the CS (satellite) channel Nittele Plus, commenters flagged that it can only be watched through limited setups such as SKY PerfecTV! or a basic cable TV plan. Opportunities for Hello! Project members to land drama roles at the lead or semi-regular level — rather than as one-off guests — are rare, which has produced a mix of puzzlement over the broadcast format and genuine excitement in the reactions.

  • Schau Essen Sausages Cut From 6 to 5 Per Pack — Why Did ‘We Won’t Lose to the Times’ Spark Backlash?

Ito Ham cutting the number of sausages in its “Schau Essen” packs from 6 to 5 — and announcing the change with the slogan “We won’t lose to the times” — sparked online discussion, with many suspecting the company had dressed up a de facto price hike in upbeat marketing language. The source article, by IT journalist Shuji Shinohara, argues the real problem wasn’t the price hike itself but how it was communicated. The 5ch thread kicked off with a tangent about why this story landed on the Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+ board, then moved into criticism of the gap between the slogan and reality, comments noting that price hikes are all but inevitable given the weak yen and rising costs, and speculation that other products like Jagarico might be quietly shrinking too.

Schau Essen 👉 sausage 👉 'Eat my sausage!' 👉 Johnny's talent agency 👉 Entertainment/Sports board (the chain of free-association that explains why this landed on the entertainment board)

Next thing you know Jagarico will be down to 6 sticks too.

I'm pretty sure Jagarico already quietly got shorter without telling anyone.
    11AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:22
Poor people should just buy the soft, mushy kind of sausage — the cheap stuff that comes packed with a ton in the bag. Schau Essen is for people who actually pay proper money.
    12AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:23
When you factor in stealth price hikes like this, ordinary people are getting hit by the weak yen and rising prices even harder than the official numbers suggest.

    Is this really Entertainment/Sports news?
Shouldn't this be on News Speed+ instead?

My Schau Essen downstairs is about to lose to the times too (yeah, that kind of joke).
    16AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:23
Wouldn't it have been better to shrink the sausages instead of cutting the count?
    17AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:23
    Just never admit you lost!
    JAAAAAA lol
    19AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:23
Having to raise the price at all means you already lost, right? So what exactly are they trying to 'win' against anyway?
    20AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:24
There are people getting mad about this here too, apparently.
    21AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:24

'We won't lose to the times!'

And then… cut one sausage to boost the meaty texture.

    …makes zero sense.

I wish they'd release a long version of Schau Essen.
They're too short for hot dogs,
and stuffing two in there just kills the vibe.

    Re: #23
    They already make one —
there's also the extra-thick Big Schau Essen.

You won't die eating plain pasta with just salt on it.
But pasta is imported from overseas using gasoline too, so it'd be weird if it didn't get pricier as well.
    27AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:24
That's such a dumb slogan, as always.
    30AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:25
They should've just raised the price normally.
This lame marketing stunt tanked their stock.
    31AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:25
Some ad agency (Dentsu or whoever) probably came up with this.
    32AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:25
Schau Essen used to be the taste of the common people, and now it's become a luxury item.
    We've really gotten poorer.
    34AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:25
Can someone explain the logic here?
If you're not losing to the times, shouldn't you keep the price the same and add more, not less?

    Re: #34
Koukun is tasty though (a rival sausage brand by Marudai).
    35AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:25
This doesn't even need a deep analysis.
They actually lost, but slapped on a slogan pretending they hadn't, so people are mocking them.
    That's literally it.

They must've known this wouldn't land well with consumers.
There's probably some other motive here — like wanting to boost brand awareness even if it means going viral for the wrong reasons.

Advertising the fact that you're cutting the quantity is just dumb.
    Do it quietly.
    46AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:26
If anything they should be increasing the quantity —
this way, they're the ones losing to the times.
    49AnonymousOct 7, 2026 13:27
Six sausages used to split evenly between 2 or 3 siblings,
and buying two packs covered a family of 4 or 6 too.

Cut the budget you're paying the ad agency that came up with this cringe slogan, and keep the actual contents the same instead 🥺

    Re: #79
Honestly, a slogan as blunt as 'Go on a diet, fatty' alongside the count cut might've gone over better.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

Schau Essen has been Ito Ham’s flagship sausage since the 1980s, with a six-link pack long established as the standard. Keeping the price the same while quietly cutting the actual quantity — as happened here — is known as a “stealth price hike” or “shrinkflation,” a tactic that’s become increasingly common across the food industry amid rising raw material and import costs. What divided opinion in the thread wasn’t the price increase itself, but the contradiction between the slogan “We won’t lose to the times” and the reality that cutting the count is, in effect, a step backward. While the mismatch between a “we haven’t lost” tagline and an actual reduction in quantity drew plenty of mockery, a smaller number of commenters pointed to the structural backdrop of a weak yen and rising prices, arguing the real issue lies with monetary and pricing policy rather than with the company itself. Read in isolation, the quoted replies might look like simple backlash against a price hike, but the core of Shinohara’s argument is about “how it was communicated” — it’s worth noting that the main driver of the backlash wasn’t the change in quantity or price itself, but the discomfort caused by dressing it up in upbeat PR language.
