  • Falcom Raises Earnings Forecast, 5ch: ‘The Logic Is So Airtight It’s Basically Harassment’

Nihon Falcom has revised its earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending September 2026 upward, with sales rising from ¥3.6 billion to ¥4.3 billion (up 19.4%) and operating profit climbing from ¥2.2 billion to ¥2.8 billion (up 27.2%). On 5ch’s hardware/industry (“geha”) board, a debate broke out over whether this strong performance was driven by the company — long a PlayStation exclusive — finally releasing the “Sora no Kiseki” (Trails in the Sky) remake simultaneously worldwide on Switch and Steam. Posters threw around a mix of theories: the effect of gaining new users on Nintendo hardware, the situation with Nippon Ichi Software, which had previously handled overseas releases, and the presence of the Chinese market via Steam.

FY ending September 2026 earnings forecast

    Sales: ¥3.6B → ¥4.3B (up 19.4%)

    Operating profit: ¥2.2B → ¥2.8B (up 27.2%)

The Switch effect is only a minor piece of this — it's really the simultaneous-release effect doing the work. So this boom probably runs through Kiseki 3rd and then levels off, for now at least.

Back then basically nobody did simultaneous cross-platform releases anyway. That became doable once Switch came along, but by then the Kiseki series had moved so far along that going multi-platform felt pointless at that point.

It's way more than 'minor.' 45% of the hardware Sora no Kiseki 1st players use is Nintendo hardware. And yeah, we know Steam's dead last and barely selling.

Right now, in terms of new-user numbers, Switch and PC (Steam) are where most of it's coming from.

The reason they slotted in the Sora no Kiseki remake was to bring in new users. Kai no Kiseki is PS-exclusive, but its user base is clearly shrinking.

(The cause was limiting the platform to PS)

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nihon Falcom has long developed its “Kiseki” (Trails) series as a PlayStation exclusive, partly because back when the company had only around 40 employees, it had its hands full just making the domestic PS version. Starting around 2018, the company expanded onto Switch and Steam, and with the “Sora no Kiseki” (Trails in the Sky) remake in particular, it carried out a simultaneous worldwide multi-platform release. Opinions in the thread are split over whether the “Switch effect,” “Chinese demand via Steam,” or “the simultaneous worldwide release itself” is the main driver of the growth. Some posts cited financial reports and an interview with the company’s president, but the cause can’t be pinned on just one factor that easily. There are also comments about the relationship with Nippon Ichi Software, which used to handle overseas development, but these include speculation from some users and aren’t officially confirmed facts — worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth flagging that posts treating the move away from PS5 as “proof” of the turnaround are conflating correlation with causation.

  • Nobel Prize in Chemistry Goes to Kenso Soai of Tokyo University of Science and One Other — 5ch: ‘Science University Just Overtook Waseda and Keio’

On October 7, 2026, it was announced that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry would go to Kenso Soai of Tokyo University of Science and one other recipient. On 5ch’s Breaking News+ board, the big talking points were Soai’s background — he did both his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Tokyo, but spent his entire research career at Tokyo University of Science, with an affiliation at Waseda University after retirement — as well as how to read his name (“Kenso” or “Kenzo”). There was also debate over the question “Is this the first Nobel laureate from a private university?”, with many posters pointing out that academically he’s a University of Tokyo graduate, splitting opinion on whether this can really be called an achievement for Tokyo University of Science.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is typically announced in early October each year, and in 2026 it fell on October 7. Kenso Soai is a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Science and Graduate School of Science, but as a researcher he reportedly spent many years at Tokyo University of Science, with an affiliation at Waseda University after retirement. On the thread, opinions split over whether this achievement should be credited to Tokyo University of Science or to the University of Tokyo, where he actually studied — essentially a debate over academic background versus current affiliation. There is precedent for laureates whose alma mater differs from their affiliation at the time of the award, so it doesn’t necessarily translate directly into a boost in name recognition for the affiliated university. There was also brief confusion over whether his name is read “Kenso” or “Kenzo,” but the thread converged on “Kenso.” Separately, the Literature Prize is scheduled to be announced on October 8, and the Economics and Peace Prizes came up as fields where Japanese laureates haven’t appeared in many years.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

It’s standard practice for Ibaraki Prefecture and its police headquarters to outsource website management to an external server provider, and in this case the prefecture has stated the cause was a malfunction on the server operated by SoftBank, which handles that management. At the time of Sankei’s report, this was described only as a “malfunction” — no official announcement has confirmed a cyberattack. Images claiming the admin panel had been altered were posted in the thread, but no verifiable source or information about who took them was provided, so their authenticity can’t be confirmed. There was also talk of “share-wari,” an industry practice of spreading government telecom contracts across multiple carriers, but this is a general observation about procurement practices, and no evidence was presented directly tying it to this particular incident. SoftBank has a track record of past incidents, including customer data leaks and outages at its subsidiaries, and much of the thread’s reaction reflects distrust built up from that history — worth noting this isn’t information that actually pins down the cause of this specific incident.

  • Actor Fumio Umezawa: “I wonder if my phone number got leaked” — unordered seafood keeps arriving at his door, cash-on-delivery

Actor Fumio Umezawa revealed on an information program aired October 6 that he suspects his own cellphone number has been leaked, confessing that unsolicited cash-on-delivery seafood had been showing up at his home. The remark came right on the heels of a string of reports about personal-data leaks at multiple companies, including Monogatari Corporation, Daiwa Securities, and Times Mobility. On a 5ch thread, the discussion ran from suspicion that “he probably ordered it himself and forgot” to tales of unsolicited-delivery scams and doubts about the cash-on-delivery system itself.

    10/7 (Wed) 16:30

Actor Fumio Umezawa appeared as a commentator on the news program “News to” (produced by Yomiuri TV, airing on the Nippon TV network) on October 6, where he revealed his suspicion that his own personal information had been leaked.

That day’s broadcast covered a string of recent personal-data leaks at Japanese companies caused by unauthorized access. At Monogatari Corporation, which runs the yakiniku chain “Yakiniku King,” personal information belonging to more than 10 million users of its official app was leaked. Similar incidents were also reported at Daiwa Securities and at Times Mobility, operator of the car-sharing service “Times Car.”

An entertainment reporter would probably already know his address and phone number anyway.

Background and key points of this topic

Behind Umezawa’s remark lies a string of recently reported large-scale personal-data leaks at multiple companies, including Monogatari Corporation (operator of the yakiniku chain Yakiniku King), Daiwa Securities, and Times Mobility. As for the “unsolicited-delivery scam” (negative option) raised in the thread, Japan’s 2021 revision of the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions established that if an item you never ordered arrives unsolicited, the recipient has no obligation to pay for it and may dispose of it right away. That said, when such a delivery lands at a celebrity’s home, it can’t simply be filed away as an ordinary misdelivery or garden-variety scam — the possibility of harassment or illicit acquisition of personal data can’t be ruled out either. The thread included plenty of speculation whose truth couldn’t be confirmed, and anything that couldn’t be verified as fact has been left out of this article.

  • Rosy Chronicle Wins Over Every Judge, Named Top Favorite to Take It All — But Fans Smell a Fix

Episode 3 of the video series ‘IDOL BATTLE ALIVE’ featured a segment in which five judges assessed where all nine competing groups currently stand. All five judges rated Rosy Chronicle as being “on another level” and the clear front-runner to win, sparking a mixed reaction on the Hello! Project section of 5channel — some praised Rosy’s obvious talent, while others suspected the predictable storyline was a “fixed match.” Speculation also swirled around other groups, including reigning champion OCHA NORMA and SKE48, with opinions split on who will actually make the finals.

    53AnonymousOct 7, 2026 18:33

    54AnonymousOct 7, 2026 18:33
There are people saying Hello! Project won't win back-to-back, but honestly Hello! Project doesn't have as much brand power as we think.
Last year's win is just remembered as 'the group OCHA NORMA won,' and Rosy is likewise just seen as one group among many — the general public isn't thinking in terms of 'take down Hello! Project' at all.
    59AnonymousOct 7, 2026 18:36
    Re: #54
    Nice try, Ocha fanboy.
The first-round win just happened because they wanted to establish the impression that 'scoring reflects real skill,' and Hello! Project has that skill-focused image — whichever Hello! Project group had entered, they'd have been made to win regardless.
    60AnonymousOct 7, 2026 18:36
    Re: #54
The idols themselves probably feel that way, but it doesn't seem like the IDOL BATTLE ALIVE production side sees it the same way.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

‘IDOL BATTLE ALIVE’ is a cross-group competition featuring Hello! Project acts like OCHA NORMA alongside groups such as SKE48, with OCHA NORMA having taken the title in the previous edition. This time, nine groups were scored by a panel of five judges, and Rosy Chronicle received especially high marks. What split the thread was whether that high praise would translate directly into an eventual win — some suspected a scripted outcome designed to spread the spotlight around, while others saw it as a straightforward assessment of talent. It’s worth noting that the judges’ comments represent only a mid-stage evaluation; advancing to the finals and the final rankings depend on other factors as well, so the outcome shouldn’t be assumed from this scoring alone.

※This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5channel (Hello! Project) thread “All Judges Call Rosy Chronicle ‘On Another Level,’ Naming Them Top Favorite to Win IDOL BATTLE ALIVE.”

  • Local Paper Pits Yamamoto the Hero Against a Slumping Ohtani

A thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo board blew up after reports that a local U.S. newspaper has been framing the Dodgers’ two Japanese stars in starkly different lights — calling Yamamoto Yoshinobu a “hero” while branding Shohei Ohtani a “slump.” The piece highlights Yamamoto’s jaw-dropping 34-0 record in major league starts when his team scores three or more runs, while pointing to Ohtani’s cold stretch: zero home runs and just two RBIs in over 100 plate appearances. Opinions in the thread split three ways — praise for Yamamoto’s dominance, fans still holding out hope for Ohtani, and some pushing back that Ohtani’s “big mouth” image is really just an exaggerated interpreter’s translation rather than his own words.

Guess everyone's forgotten about the 2024 postseason — Yamamoto gave up 3 runs to the Padres right out of the gate, and it was Ohtani's game-tying three-run homer that saved him from being the scapegoat.

The core of this story is a striking contrast in numbers: Yamamoto Yoshinobu’s pitching line of 34 wins, 0 losses in starts where his team scored at least three runs, versus Shohei Ohtani’s cold streak of zero home runs and just two RBIs in over 100 plate appearances. It’s easy to overlook that Yamamoto’s gaudy record only covers games where his offense backed him up — it isn’t a measure of his own ERA. As for Ohtani’s “big mouth” reputation, commenters in the thread point out that this likely stems not from his own words but from an interpreter’s embellished translation going viral, meaning the public image may not match what he actually said. On the other hand, Ohtani has a track record of bailing Yamamoto out during the 2024 postseason, and many in the thread argue it’s too soon to lock in a verdict based on this slump alone. The fact that reputations can swing so wildly over a short stretch of games is part of what makes postseason baseball so unforgiving.

  • IBM’s Quantum Computer Finishes the Job in 19 Seconds — 5ch Reacts: “This Is Scary for Security”

An American theoretical condensed-matter physicist reports that IBM’s “Nighthawk r2” quantum processor generated one million samples in just 19 seconds on a benchmark widely used to demonstrate quantum advantage. The same task is estimated to take roughly 100 years on a supercomputer. On the 5ch Science News+ thread, reactions were split: some worried about the security risks of AI merging with quantum computing and the possibility of RSA encryption or Bitcoin being cracked, while others pushed back with technical arguments that “quantum supremacy is an illusion.”

IBM’s quantum computer completes a 100-year supercomputer calculation in 19 seconds

An American theoretical condensed-matter physicist reports that IBM’s “Nighthawk r2” quantum processor generated one million samples in just 19 seconds on a benchmark widely used for early demonstrations of quantum advantage.

This is reportedly a workload that would take even a supercomputer around 100 years.

It's not going to happen that easily, so don't worry. What AI can do now, it can do because the method is already known — it's good at matching the right tool to the right job among things that already exist. If the right tool doesn't exist, no amount of AI can make it appear. Before worrying about that, can AI even help build quantum computer hardware properly? Then can it build the software properly? That's a story for way down the line

Random-circuit sampling simulates a quantum circuit — for N qubits, if you honestly simulate all 2^N terms on a classical computer, it obviously takes exponential time. Simulating it on a quantum computer, on the other hand, looks like it only takes time proportional to N, but the precision isn't great. So if you set precision at 1%, you can just about manage a superposition of around 64 terms (N=6), but by N=7 each term's coefficient gets pretty garbage, and by N=10 it's basically just random numbers. Bottom line: quantum supremacy is an illusion

Bitcoin's done for ("owata" = net slang for "it's over")

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Quantum supremacy” is a metric showing that a quantum computer outperforms a classical computer on a specific problem, and Google and IBM have a history of competitively announcing demonstration experiments in recent years. This time’s “random circuit sampling” is also one of the standard benchmarks for this, but as a technical reply in the thread (>>31) points out, result precision drops as the number of qubits increases, so some experts hold the view that this benchmark itself doesn’t demonstrate a practical advantage. The thread also saw concerns spread about RSA encryption and Bitcoin private keys being cracked by quantum computers, but achieving that would require a “fault-tolerant quantum computer” capable of stably running a huge number of qubits — something vastly different in both scale and purpose from current experimental machines. A point readers can easily conflate: the “19 seconds” figure is an achievement on a narrow, specific-purpose benchmark, which is a separate matter from practical use as a general-purpose computer.

  • Decided to Get AGA Treatment via Online Clinic — 5ch Users Weigh In on Drug Side Effects and Costs

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a poster who announced plans to start online treatment for AGA (male pattern baldness) the next day received a wave of advice from fellow thread members drawing on their own experience. The poster said they’d “gotten about as bald as Tsurube” (Shofukutei Tsurube, a famously bald Japanese comedian/TV host) but had decided to make one last stand with treatment. The discussion expanded into how to pick a treatment approach — covering minoxidil’s side effects and impact on liver function, the differences between finasteride and dutasteride, comparisons with hair transplants, and how to safely handle topical medication in households with pets. Opinions also diverged on effectiveness: early treatment tends to work better, but the receding “M-shaped” hairline is said to be much tougher to treat.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

AGA (male pattern baldness) treatment generally combines oral medications like finasteride and dutasteride with topical minoxidil, and keeping the effect requires continuing to take and apply them long-term. In recent years, more clinics have started offering online consultations that let patients get a same-day prescription, but since oral medications can burden liver function, a blood test beforehand is recommended. The cost — several thousand yen a month, ongoing — can also add up to a real burden. The old legend that comes up in the thread, that “castration prevents baldness,” has spread as something of an urban myth and isn’t an established modern treatment, which is easy to misunderstand. Also, the point raised that topical minoxidil can poison cats on contact, so pet-owning households need to be careful, is something that’s genuinely said in real medical settings too.

  • Godzilla-0.0 Nears Release Amid Rumors Hideaki Anno Has Secretly Begun Shin Godzilla 2

While the trailer for the November release Godzilla-0.0 has started airing, an article caused a stir by reporting that a film industry insider revealed a sequel to Hideaki Anno’s Shin Godzilla is secretly moving forward behind the scenes. It’s also been reported that the new cast may include an actress who overlaps with the previous film. On 5ch’s Entertainment & Sports News+ thread, discussion moved past the rumor itself and into a debate over which style is better — Shin Godzilla or Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla-1.0 — with opinions split over differences in domestic versus overseas reception and personal taste regarding Anno’s distinctive script and direction.

“We hadn’t finished burying Godzilla after all–“

Amid land buried in rubble, Hidetaka Yoshioka murmurs this line. It’s the opening scene of the trailer for the movie Godzilla-0.0, set for release in November. Yoshioka returns, continuing his role from the previous film, Godzilla-1.0. In ‘-1.0,’ Ryunosuke Kamiki, playing a former kamikaze pilot, and others confronted the threat of a Godzilla rendered with spectacular VFX. Now, with the sequel’s release approaching and anticipation steadily building, it turns out there’s actually another “Godzilla movie” quietly in progress behind the scenes. A film industry insider reveals the details.

Hollywood's Godzilla — meaning Westerners in general, same as in painting —
thinks in three dimensions. That's why it ends up looking like some oversized reptile. Yamazaki's Godzilla is the Hollywood type.
He's thinking about it too realistically. That's also the difference between Disney animation and Japanese anime.
Japan has expressed things in two dimensions ever since the days of ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
Godzilla isn't a drawing, but it's something closer to a deity than a giant reptile.
In the original Mothra vs. Godzilla, Godzilla slowly wading in from the sea, seen from a distance — that's the true aesthetic of Godzilla.

There was a movie called "The Great Monster Clean-Up," but it seems to have gotten a pretty bad reputation.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Shin Godzilla” (2016) was highly praised domestically, but is said to have struggled at the overseas box office due to its meeting-centered style of storytelling. “Godzilla-1.0” (2023), on the other hand, earned high acclaim both at home and abroad under director Takashi Yamazaki, and won the Academy Award for Visual Effects in 2024. Against this backdrop of differing track records, opinions in the thread were split over whether Hideaki Anno’s style (two-dimensional, emphasizing stylized aesthetics) or Takashi Yamazaki’s style (three-dimensional, emphasizing realistic depiction) better fits the image of Godzilla. It should also be noted that the “Shin Godzilla 2” rumor itself comes only from remarks attributed to a film industry insider — it is not a confirmed production or an official announcement. As for the “overlapping actress” casting detail, no specific name is given in the original text, so it should be read as speculation rather than confirmed fact.

On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ thread, many posters reminisced about past actors who played the title role, with opinions split between those calling Hideo Tōno or Kōtarō Satomi “the last true Lord Mito” and others saying they’d give the Takeda version a chance. Plenty of lighthearted comments also looked forward to the iconic “inro reveal” scene and the series’ other trademark beats, reflecting just how much affection fans still have for the long-running franchise.

Mariko Shinoda (as Shino) and Kanji Tsuda (as Kazaguruma no Yashichi) round out the cast as the undercover duo. Kinda nervous he's gonna blurt out 'Maru-chan!' during Lord Mito's usual closing speech (riffing on Takeda's old instant-noodle commercials)

    Re: #2
When he pulls out the inro: "Alright, listen up! Liiisten up!" (mimicking Takeda's drawn-out 'attention!' catchphrase from his teacher roles)
    3AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:21
Starts with the classic period-drama line "my old affliction's acting up" in front of a Suke-san Udon shop, then rolls straight into "Life's got its ups and downs… ALSOK!" (mashing up Takeda's real-life commercial catchphrases for Suke-san Udon, the LaQua spa, and ALSOK security)

Is Takeda gonna do that "Fofofofo…" laugh of his?
Nah, sorry, that's gonna come off shady lol

I was a high schooler back when Mito Kōmon aired as a regular show, and I recall my Japanese history teacher saying he was by no means a great lord when it came to actually running his domain

    Re: #5
Sounds like he raised plenty of hell when he was young, but he got his act together once he became lord.
Since he left behind major achievements after retiring, maybe his active years just get overshadowed.

Though he definitely wasn't literally traveling the country righting wrongs.

So far nobody's topped Hideo Tōno as Lord Mito
    9AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:25
Wish they'd just put it back on regular broadcast TV
    10AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:26
Kōtarō Satomi was the last Lord Mito as far as I'm concerned. I don't recognize this farce they're doing on BS now
    11AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:28
Just make it an AI Mito Kōmon already.
The face has to be Hideo Tōno, obviously.
    I won't accept anything else
    15AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:32
    Would love a Kinpachi-sensei crossover
A lecturing tour instead of a righting-wrongs tour (riffing on Takeda's famous schoolteacher role, Kinpachi-sensei)
    16AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:35
I don't accept Takeda as Lord Mito, but I guess the only still-living actors who've played him are the 4th, Kōji Ishizaka, and the 5th, Kōtarō Satomi

    Re: #16
The handoff went smoothly from the 1st Tōno → 2nd Nishimura → 3rd Sano, so why'd they let Kōji Ishizaka become the 4th?
    25AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:53
Today's celebrities all look so young that there's basically nobody left who can play that textbook "wise old man" type like in the old days
    39AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:11
    Re: #25
Even regular 70- and 80-year-olds these days look way too young and spry.
Back in the Shōwa era there were plenty of short, stubborn old men around
    34AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:07
Baijaku Nakamura, who played Mitsukuni in "Aoi Tokugawa Sandai," seems like he'd be about the right age for it, but that was just a parody of the final scene anyway
    38AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:11
These specials always throw in some assassin gunning for Lord Mito, but… it just doesn't feel right somehow
    40AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:15
Apparently in his teens, Mito Kōmon was what we'd call a total delinquent nowadays
    41AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:17
He takes down enemies with a coat hanger instead of his cane, right?
    43AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:18
    Re: #41
Lord Mito: "It has to be a wooden hanger, nothing else will do!"
    44AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:20
    Shinoda just doesn't cut it
Get an actual glamour model to play Ogin
    46AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:24
    Of all people, Tetsuya Takeda?
A Lord Mito who talks that high-and-mighty just isn't gonna land, I think
    47AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:24
I used to love the Kyushu banter segments with Takeda, Chikushi, and Tamori, but they vanished from YouTube
    48AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:28
    Mito Kōmon —
They say he did street killings (tsujigiri) in his youth and settled down later, but even after retiring he personally stabbed one of his own chief retainers to death lol

    Re: #48
Apparently he compiled a history book called "Dai Nihon-shi" — sounds like the kind of grandiose title some movie director would slap on a film — but he was barely involved in the actual compiling. Kind of like how the famous "Kindaichi" dictionary carries that name despite its namesake barely working on it.

Maybe there just wasn't a decent villain-faced actor available.
If only the villain-face lineage from film actor Ryūnosuke Tsukigata were still around

    Re: #68
Fun fact, the very first Lord Mito in the TBS "Mito Kōmon" franchise was actually Ryūnosuke Tsukigata…
Though it's basically been erased from history…
Before the "National Theater" Mito Kōmon, there was a "Brother Theater" Mito Kōmon

Background and Key Points on This Topic

“Mito Kōmon” began airing on the TBS network in 1969, and after its regular broadcast run ended in 2011, BS-TBS has kept it alive through one-off specials. The role of Lord Mito has passed from Hideo Tōno to Akira Nishimura, Asao Sano, Kōji Ishizaka, and Kōtarō Satomi, with Tetsuya Takeda now taking the role for a second time following last year’s special. The thread’s central disagreement boiled down to whether to accept Takeda’s version as a legitimate Lord Mito, pitting those who hold the Tōno era as the gold standard against those willing to embrace it as a fresh take. It’s worth noting that there’s no historical record of the real Mitsukuni actually traveling the country righting wrongs after retirement — that’s purely a dramatic invention. While he was known for rough behavior in his youth, his rule as domain lord and his involvement in compiling the “Dai Nihon-shi” history are documented facts, so the thread’s claim that he “wasn’t a great lord” should be taken as only a partial view.
