The story

On October 7, BS-TBS announced that it will air “Mito Kōmon Special: Okazaki & Owari” in December. The main cast — Tetsuya Takeda as Lord Mito Mitsukuni, along with Takuma Zaiki, Atsushi Arai, Mariko Shinoda, Kanji Tsuda, and Yoshihiko Hakamada — returns unchanged from last year’s installment for a two-hour special. On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports News+ thread, many posters reminisced about past actors who played the title role, with opinions split between those calling Hideo Tōno or Kōtarō Satomi “the last true Lord Mito” and others saying they’d give the Takeda version a chance. Plenty of lighthearted comments also looked forward to the iconic “inro reveal” scene and the series’ other trademark beats, reflecting just how much affection fans still have for the long-running franchise.

Kinda nervous he's gonna blurt out 'Maru-chan!' during Lord Mito's usual closing speech (riffing on Takeda's old instant-noodle commercials)

Re: #2
When he pulls out the inro: "Alright, listen up! Liiisten up!" (mimicking Takeda's drawn-out 'attention!' catchphrase from his teacher roles)
3AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:21
Starts with the classic period-drama line "my old affliction's acting up" in front of a Suke-san Udon shop, then rolls straight into "Life's got its ups and downs… ALSOK!" (mashing up Takeda's real-life commercial catchphrases for Suke-san Udon, the LaQua spa, and ALSOK security)

Is Takeda gonna do that "Fofofofo…" laugh of his?
Nah, sorry, that's gonna come off shady lol
5AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:23
I was a high schooler back when Mito Kōmon aired as a regular show, and I recall my Japanese history teacher saying he was by no means a great lord when it came to actually running his domain

Re: #5
Sounds like he raised plenty of hell when he was young, but he got his act together once he became lord.
Since he left behind major achievements after retiring, maybe his active years just get overshadowed.

Though he definitely wasn't literally traveling the country righting wrongs.

So far nobody's topped Hideo Tōno as Lord Mito
9AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:25
Wish they'd just put it back on regular broadcast TV
10AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:26
Kōtarō Satomi was the last Lord Mito as far as I'm concerned. I don't recognize this farce they're doing on BS now
11AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:28
Just make it an AI Mito Kōmon already.
The face has to be Hideo Tōno, obviously.
I won't accept anything else
15AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:32
Would love a Kinpachi-sensei crossover
A lecturing tour instead of a righting-wrongs tour (riffing on Takeda's famous schoolteacher role, Kinpachi-sensei)
16AnonymousOct 7, 2026 15:35
I don't accept Takeda as Lord Mito, but I guess the only still-living actors who've played him are the 4th, Kōji Ishizaka, and the 5th, Kōtarō Satomi

Re: #16
The handoff went smoothly from the 1st Tōno → 2nd Nishimura → 3rd Sano, so why'd they let Kōji Ishizaka become the 4th?

Today's celebrities all look so young that there's basically nobody left who can play that textbook "wise old man" type like in the old days
39AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:11
Re: #25
Even regular 70- and 80-year-olds these days look way too young and spry.
Back in the Shōwa era there were plenty of short, stubborn old men around
34AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:07
Baijaku Nakamura, who played Mitsukuni in "Aoi Tokugawa Sandai," seems like he'd be about the right age for it, but that was just a parody of the final scene anyway
38AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:11
These specials always throw in some assassin gunning for Lord Mito, but… it just doesn't feel right somehow
40AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:15
Apparently in his teens, Mito Kōmon was what we'd call a total delinquent nowadays
41AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:17
He takes down enemies with a coat hanger instead of his cane, right?
43AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:18
Re: #41
Lord Mito: "It has to be a wooden hanger, nothing else will do!"
44AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:20
Shinoda just doesn't cut it
Get an actual glamour model to play Ogin
46AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:24
Of all people, Tetsuya Takeda?
A Lord Mito who talks that high-and-mighty just isn't gonna land, I think
47AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:24
I used to love the Kyushu banter segments with Takeda, Chikushi, and Tamori, but they vanished from YouTube
48AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:28
Mito Kōmon —
They say he did street killings (tsujigiri) in his youth and settled down later, but even after retiring he personally stabbed one of his own chief retainers to death lol
53AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:31
Re: #48
Apparently he compiled a history book called "Dai Nihon-shi" — sounds like the kind of grandiose title some movie director would slap on a film — but he was barely involved in the actual compiling. Kind of like how the famous "Kindaichi" dictionary carries that name despite its namesake barely working on it.

Re: #22
Maybe there just wasn't a decent villain-faced actor available.
If only the villain-face lineage from film actor Ryūnosuke Tsukigata were still around
71AnonymousOct 7, 2026 16:59
Re: #68
Fun fact, the very first Lord Mito in the TBS "Mito Kōmon" franchise was actually Ryūnosuke Tsukigata…
Though it's basically been erased from history…
Before the "National Theater" Mito Kōmon, there was a "Brother Theater" Mito Kōmon

Background and Key Points on This Topic

“Mito Kōmon” began airing on the TBS network in 1969, and after its regular broadcast run ended in 2011, BS-TBS has kept it alive through one-off specials. The role of Lord Mito has passed from Hideo Tōno to Akira Nishimura, Asao Sano, Kōji Ishizaka, and Kōtarō Satomi, with Tetsuya Takeda now taking the role for a second time following last year’s special. The thread’s central disagreement boiled down to whether to accept Takeda’s version as a legitimate Lord Mito, pitting those who hold the Tōno era as the gold standard against those willing to embrace it as a fresh take. It’s worth noting that there’s no historical record of the real Mitsukuni actually traveling the country righting wrongs after retirement — that’s purely a dramatic invention. While he was known for rough behavior in his youth, his rule as domain lord and his involvement in compiling the “Dai Nihon-shi” history are documented facts, so the thread’s claim that he “wasn’t a great lord” should be taken as only a partial view.
