  • Used iPhone 14 Hits #1 in Sales for the First Time — 5ch: “You Can Get One for ¥60,000”

A survey by major used-smartphone dealer belong found that the iPhone 14 topped the used-device sales ranking for the first time, with the combined share of the iPhone 14–16 lineup roughly quadrupling from a year earlier. When 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board picked up the story, mockery of people still clinging to an old model with a Lightning port collided with praise for its roughly ¥60,000 affordability and iOS’s long support window. The thread also touched on reluctance to switch to Android phones like the Xperia, and gripes about newer models dropping the titanium body.

    Background and Key Points

The survey behind this story comes from belong, a major player in used-smartphone buyback and rental, and this marks the first time the iPhone 14 has taken the top spot in used-device sales rankings. The 14 was the last generation to use a Lightning port before the switch to USB-C from the 15 onward, which has created a gap in used prices. In the thread, voices mocking people who keep using an older model as “poor” clashed with others praising its roughly ¥60,000 affordability and iOS’s long support window. It’s worth noting, though, that this data doesn’t reflect which device performs better — it simply reflects market factors like price bracket and years of OS support, not a verdict on iPhone’s popularity itself.

  • Soya Igari: “No Way Alcohol Is Good for You” — Idol Questions Older Generation, 5ch Claps Back: “It’s Medicine for the Soul”

Soya Igari (24), a member of the five-person Jr. group “KEY TO LIT,” questioned the common claim from older generations that “alcohol is medicine” and “the best cure for a hangover is more alcohol,” during the September 23 broadcast of “Honma de ka!? TV.” While host Akashiya Sanma invoked the old saying that drinking in moderation is “the best of all medicines,” Igari shot back, “There’s no way alcohol is good for you. I honestly don’t get it.” The remark split 5ch commenters between those sympathizing with Igari and those defending the tradition of an evening drink, sparking a broader debate over which does more social harm: alcohol or tobacco.

Soya Igari (24), a member of the five-person Jr. group “KEY TO LIT (Kiteretsu),” appeared on Fuji TV’s “Honma de ka!? TV” (Wednesdays, 9:00 p.m.), aired on the 23rd. In a segment where guests shared behavior from the Showa and Heisei generations that felt “impossible to take seriously,” the episode aired as a special titled “Sanma vs. Reiwa Common Sense! Bridging the Generation Gap.”

Igari pointed out, “Something I honestly don’t get about the older generation — don’t they always say things like ‘alcohol is medicine’?” Host Akashiya Sanma responded, “Well, there’s that old saying, ‘the best of all medicines.’” Igari pressed on: “They always say things like ‘cure a hangover with more alcohol.’ It just seems crazy to me. It doesn’t make sense. There’s no way alcohol is good for you,” he said, shaking his head.

A total wreck when sober, but sharp as a tack once they've had a drink —
feel like there was a character just like that in Bakabon.

    Background and Points of Debate

The saying “alcohol is the best of all medicines” traces back to a Chinese classical text, and as several thread commenters pointed out, it’s believed to have originated as a justification for the state’s monopoly on alcohol, salt, and iron. Meanwhile, the so-called “J-curve” theory — which held that moderate drinking lowers mortality — has been criticized for a statistical bias, since the comparison group lumped in people who had already quit drinking due to poor health; in recent years the WHO has taken the clear position that there is no safe amount of alcohol, that the safe amount is zero. The divide in the thread reflects a temperature gap between the generation defending the long-standing culture of the evening drink and TV’s “anything’s forgivable if you were drunk” attitude, and a younger generation that puts more weight on health data. Rather than being a judgment on Igari personally, the debate ends up putting the common wisdom — repeated on TV again and again — that “alcohol is good for you” under scrutiny, making it an easy point of agreement for non-drinking viewers.

  • WEST. Announces Breakup, Fujii and Kotaki to Leave the Group — 5ch: ‘Worst Breakup Since SMAP’

WEST., a group under STARTO ENTERTAINMENT, announced on September 24 that it is ending its activities. Twelve years after their 2014 debut — and after renaming from “Johnny’s WEST” to “WEST.” in 2023 — the group is calling it quits, with Ryusei Fujii and Nozomu Kotaki declaring they will leave the group entirely while the remaining five members go on to work individually. On 5ch, the news sparked surprise given that the group reportedly already had work booked under the group name starting October 1, and reactions also spread over the fact that the announcement coincided with a stretch in which several members had one after another revealed marriages or relationships, fueling all kinds of speculation about the circumstances and reasons behind the breakup.

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT announced in a bombshell statement on the 24th that the Kansai-born seven-member group “WEST.” is ending its activities. Via their fan club, all seven members appeared together in a video to announce, “We’ve decided to close down the group.” Twelve years since their 2014 debut. In 2023 they renamed the group from “Johnny’s WEST” to “WEST.” Now they are closing the book on 12 years of history, bowing their heads to fans with “our deepest apologies.”

WEST. debuted in April 2014 with the single “Ee Janaika.” The group started out with seven members: Daiki Shigeoka, Terushi Kiriyama, Junta Nakama, Tomohiro Kamiyama, Ryusei Fujii, Takahiro Hamada, and Nozomu Kotaki.

The departure announcement was sudden too.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

WEST. is a seven-member group that kept performing under the name “WEST.” — renamed from “Johnny’s WEST” — even after the former Johnny’s agency rebranded as STARTO ENTERTAINMENT in 2023, and this breakup marks a major turning point for the group in its post-rebrand era. What drew the most attention on the thread was that the breakup was announced the day before group-branded work was reportedly already scheduled to begin on October 1, and that this coincided with a period in which several members had, one after another, revealed marriages or relationships. Some commenters compared the intensity of this breakup to that of the legendary SMAP, though SMAP’s split is generally attributed mainly to conflict with the agency itself, a different set of circumstances from the deteriorating relationships among members being discussed here. It’s also worth noting that posts pinning the breakup’s cause on any specific member’s responsibility are speculation not based on any official statement, not confirmed fact.

While some praised QR ordering as “convenient” and said it “cuts down on order mistakes,” others pushed back with complaints like “I don’t want to friend a place I’ll only visit once” and “don’t make customers pay for the data,” splitting the thread between those who valued convenience and those who resented the hassle.

If it's from a tablet the store provides, that's fine — I just don't want to register on LINE for a place I'm only visiting once.

Major chains basically never do this — they run their own in-house ordering/payment systems. It's independent, mom-and-pop places that use the LINE registration system, since it's cheap to set up.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The backdrop here is that independently owned restaurants often adopt LINE Official Account ordering systems because it lets them avoid the cost of building a dedicated app or POS system. Unlike browser-based QR ordering that works on its own, requiring customers to “add as a friend” on LINE keeps setup costs down for the store, but tends to create friction for customers — the hassle of registering and unease over handing over personal information. The thread’s split reactions come down to the fact that QR ordering itself and the LINE-registration-required operating model are really two separate issues; it was the latter the man in the original article was questioning. Conflating the two makes it look like a simple generational story about “older people who can’t keep up with digitization,” but the complaints actually center on paying for one’s own data usage and the hassle of registering — reactions that could come from any age group.

  • Nobel Peace Prize Frontrunner: The ICC — ‘Every World Leader Must Obey International Law’

On September 22, Norway’s Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) named the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a frontrunner for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The forecast comes as the Trump administration ramps up pressure aimed at “dismantling” the ICC, including sanctioning its judges and prosecutors — and PRIO’s stated rationale is that the award would let it be argued that “every state and leader bears an equal responsibility to respect international law.” On 5channel threads, commenters repeatedly questioned the authority and value of the Nobel Peace Prize itself, while discussion also spread to the relationship between Trump and the prize and to related international developments like Hungary’s announced withdrawal from the ICC.

Norway’s Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), which forecasts the Nobel Peace Prize winner every year, named the International Criminal Court (ICC, headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands) as this year’s frontrunner on the 22nd. Amid mounting pressure on the ICC from the Trump administration, PRIO explained that giving it the award would make it possible to argue that “every state and leader bears an equal responsibility to respect international law.”

PRIO pointed to the US-Israeli military operation against Iran and the US military intervention in Venezuela, noting that “upholding an internationally recognized normative order — international law above all — is essential to preventing and resolving conflict in an increasingly polarized world.” It stressed that the ICC’s work “holds great potential to contribute to world peace.”

The ICC is a permanent international tribunal that tries individuals suspected of involvement in genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. The United States, which is not a member, has pushed back against the ICC’s approval of investigations into war crimes by American soldiers — pressuring member states to withdraw and sanctioning judges and prosecutors, including President Tomoko Akane, in what amounts to a bid to “dismantle” the court.

Instead of doing that, there's exactly one reason people crave a prize like this: they want to decorate their own life's résumé with it.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if the ICC — the very body Trump's trying to destroy — ended up winning the very Peace Prize he wanted so badly that he took his frustration out on Venezuela when he couldn't get it lol

    Background and Key Points

Because the Nobel Peace Prize winner is chosen solely by a private Nobel Committee, PRIO’s forecast is merely an analysis from an independent research institute and has nothing to do with the Committee itself. Its hit rate isn’t considered especially high either, and the thread saw comments comparing it to “a horse-racing tipster.” The ICC is a permanent tribunal with jurisdiction over states that have ratified the Rome Statute; the US, China, and Russia, among others, are not members. Because Palestine is a member state, there’s an institutional argument that Israel’s actions in Gaza can fall under ICC jurisdiction even though Israel itself is not a member — this is the backdrop to the thread’s jurisdiction debate. US sanctions on ICC judges and prosecutors, including Court President Tomoko Akane, and Hungary’s announcement that it would withdraw from the ICC around the time of Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit, were also discussed on the thread as symbols of US pressure. The official winner will be announced on October 9.

    Background and Key Points

‘Tabekko Doubutsu’ is Cabaya Foods’ brand of animal-shaped biscuits, and ‘MIRAI LAB.’ is a limited-time fan experience facility built around it. Yukie Kawamura, the former member who came up in the thread, reportedly asked fans not to name her even if they spotted her when she left ANGERME — which is why it came as a surprise that her junior, Wakana Matsumoto, is now openly sharing their friendship. That said, much of what’s discussed in the thread — whether Kawamura is married, how the friendship started, and so on — is speculation from posters rather than anything confirmed by Kawamura or those involved. Fans also picked apart the blog photos for clues, like tracing the outfit back to its owner.

  • OpenAI’s Deficit: ¥43.6 Trillion — ‘Death Cross’ Looms From 2026 to End of 2030

The Financial Times reports — relayed by Bloomberg — that OpenAI expects a cumulative free cash flow deficit of up to $278 billion (roughly ¥43.6 trillion) between 2026 and the end of 2030. As capital spending explodes amid the generative AI boom while revenue fails to keep pace, the company is approaching what’s called a “death cross” — the point where cash burn overtakes income. On 5channel’s Newsplus board, reactions ranged from shock at the sheer scale of the deficit, to doubts over whether the massive spending on data centers and chips will ever pay off, to comparisons with companies like Google and Microsoft that already have solid revenue streams, and even claims that the debt is now so large OpenAI has effectively become “too big to fail.”

Maybe that's how it looks to an outsider, but really all that's happened is that even talentless people can now churn out shoddy, style-over-substance knockoffs of things humans used to do properly.

    Death cross.
    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Goy-iZNaMAAqrAO.jpg

    Background and Talking Points

It’s worth noting that this ¥43.6 trillion figure isn’t from OpenAI’s own official earnings disclosure — it comes from internal documents reportedly obtained by the Financial Times and relayed by Bloomberg. A “death cross” is a financial term for the point where cumulative investment spending keeps outpacing revenue growth until cash flow becomes unsustainable — a phrase commonly used when analyzing growth-stage companies. In the thread, some pointed to precedents like SoftBank, which has survived years of deliberate loss-making investment, while others worried that the massive spending on data centers could turn into abandoned assets, much like Japan’s solar power installations. Opinions were split on whether the AI industry’s capital spending race is legitimate forward investment or simply a bubble.</parameter>

  • Report: Julie Fujishima Fumes Over M!LK’s MAJ Win — 5ch: “Your Agency Doesn’t Even Get a Seat at the Table”

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT (formerly Johnny’s & Associates) finds itself at the center of several overlapping controversies. timelesz member Shuto Inomata was arrested on suspicion of assault and has been suspended from activities, while separately, Bunshun Online and other outlets report that STARTO representative Julie Keiko Fujishima is fuming over Stardust-affiliated group M!LK’s win at “Music Awards Japan,” a music award that prides itself on judging without favoritism — reportedly declaring, “We won’t be entering our kids again.” On 5ch, reactions were split for and against Fujishima, alongside talk of the overexposure of Johnny’s-affiliated talent on TV and reflections on the history of male idol groups nurtured by other agencies like Stardust.

    STARTO ENTERTAINMENT is in turmoil.

On September 19, Shuto Inomata (25), a member of the eight-member group timelesz, was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of assault after allegedly injuring a woman he knew. STARTO announced the same day that Inomata would be suspended from activities for the time being, with formal disciplinary action to be decided once the authorities’ ruling is finalized. Inomata reportedly denies the allegations.

The other seven members of timelesz issued a statement saying, “We are all at a loss for words over the shock of this.” As STARTO scrambles to respond to the arrest of a member of one of its most popular groups, another story concerning the male idol world is also drawing attention.

When M!LK actually won an award, she'd stepped out of her seat
Guess she genuinely didn't expect them to take it

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Music Awards Japan (MAJ)” is a relatively new music award founded on the principle of judging without favoritism, aiming — as referenced in the thread via a comment attributed to someone connected to Sakanaction — for evaluation criteria detached from the power dynamics of traditional talent agencies. M!LK’s agency, Stardust, is a longstanding company that has spent years trying to break into the male idol market effectively monopolized by Johnny’s (now STARTO), and the rise of acts like EXILE and the Ebichu (Ebisu Muscats) lineage is part of that same broader trend. On the STARTO side, meanwhile, the extent of Julie Keiko Fujishima’s continued involvement has repeatedly come into question even after the company’s name change following the former Johnny’s sexual abuse scandal — and the thread’s own observation that “she may not actually hold real authority anymore” is worth bearing in mind before taking the reporting’s premise at face value. It’s also worth noting that the timelesz member’s arrest, reported around the same time, is an entirely separate matter, and posters in the thread are careful not to conflate the two.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “[STARTO ENTERTAINMENT] Julie Keiko Fujishima Reportedly Furious Over M!LK’s Meteoric Rise… Said to Be Fuming and Unhappy Over Their ‘MAJ’ Win, Declaring “We Won’t Enter Our Kids Again” [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★]“.

  • Passed Her Dissertation, Still No PhD: Student Sues Nara Women’s University — 5ch Reacts, ‘Never Heard of Such a Thing’

A graduate student at Nara Women’s University has sued the university and the national university corporation that runs it, seeking the award of her doctoral degree and about 17 million yen in damages, after the university notified her the day before her PhD program was set to conclude that it would not grant her the degree — despite the fact that her dissertation had already passed committee review and she had published a co-authored paper with her supervisors in an international academic journal. The university has no rule requiring it to disclose reasons for withholding a degree; only after the student filed an objection did it explain that “a separate meeting held after the dissertation review did not reach the required number of votes in favor.” On 5ch, users debated where responsibility lies with the supervising professors, and discussed how the realities of earning a doctorate differ between the sciences and the humanities.

It was revealed on the 22nd that a graduate student at Nara Women’s University has filed suit in Nara District Court against the university and the national university corporation that operates it, arguing it was unlawful to withhold her doctoral degree even though she had met the requirements — passing her dissertation review and having her work published in an academic journal. She is seeking the degree itself plus roughly 17 million yen in damages. The suit was filed on the 18th.

According to the complaint and members of the review committee, the student submitted her dissertation in January. The review committee found it passing in February, and the findings were also published in an international academic journal as a paper co-authored with her supervisors. However, on March 23 — the day before her doctoral program was due to conclude — the university notified her that it would not award the degree.

According to the university, there is no rule requiring it to disclose reasons for withholding a degree. When the student filed an objection, the university explained that at a separate meeting held after the dissertation review, the number of votes in favor among attendees fell short of what was required.

Maybe 2 or 3 per supervising professor.
Around 10 a year per department.

    Since it's that few,
    professors do review them seriously.

By contrast, an undergrad thesis passes as long as the fabrication or copy-pasting isn't blatant.
Bachelor's degrees get mass-produced — 100+ a year per department, it's basically an assembly line.

is that a lot of the content can't be caught by peer review alone
so in the end, self-policing from within is the only option, and that's just the institution doing its job
I don't know if the paper got retracted, but normally you'd just issue a correction

    Re: #196
No, it's a specialist journal — researchers from around the world routinely send questions about odd-looking data, real experts in the field, that is
For important papers, it's pretty normal to respond to those questions in a letter in the next issue
And if the data really was fabricated, then yeah, it should be retracted

    Re: #196
If it's humanities, this reminds me of the Sokal affair

Background and Key Points of This Story

At Japanese graduate schools, it’s common for the substantive review of a dissertation (by a review committee) to be a separate step from the final vote by a body such as the faculty council that formally decides whether to award the degree — meaning there’s institutional room for a dissertation to pass content review and still be voted down at a later stage. The university’s explanation in this case, that “votes in favor fell short of the required number,” appears to reflect this structure. At the same time, the fact that the university has no rule requiring it to disclose reasons for withholding a degree, and only gave an explanation after the student objected, is a point that raises questions about procedural transparency. Thread commenters also noted that the realities of earning a doctorate — how readily a course-based PhD is granted, and how much a supervisor’s personal relationship with the student matters — differ significantly between the sciences and the humanities; without knowing this difference, it’s hard to make sense of the “she passed, so why?” puzzle. It should be noted that the reporting doesn’t specify which field this case falls under, and the content of the internal vote can’t be verified from outside.

  • ‘130-Year-Old’ Grandma Found in Thailand — ID Card Lists Birth Year as 1896

Saeng Mankharat, who lives in a village in northeastern Thailand, has an ID card listing her date of birth as September 18, 1896 — if true, that would make her 130 years old, a full 13 years older than the current record holder for world’s oldest person. Locals have hailed her as a “super-centenarian,” and she’s become an overnight sensation. Over on 5channel, the thread lit up with talk about the reliability of extreme-age claims — from users reminiscing about their own grandparents born in the Meiji era to the case of Shigechiyo Izumi, whose recorded age was reportedly thrown off by a family-registry mix-up.

Obviously, but 40 years ago when I was in high school,
having grandparents born in the Meiji era (1868–1912) — mine included —
    wasn't the least bit unusual.
Before I knew it, they'd basically all disappeared.

Both my parents worked, so I was raised by my grandma, who was born in the Meiji era
I loved hearing her stories about her own grandfather fighting in the Boshin War (1868–69)
Once I asked her to tell me a war story, and she said "the earlier one or the recent one?" I said the recent one, and she started going on about "the Russkies," so I figured she meant the Russo-Japanese War
Then I saw a photo of her from around the Pacific War era, and she was already a wrinkled old lady — that threw me
    39AnonymousSep 22, 2026 20:38

    Re: #44
    It's not really about biology
Pathologically speaking, the ceiling is more like 125, and among people alive today, roughly 1 in 10 million might have the potential to live past 120

Apparently Shigechiyo Izumi somehow got swapped with his dead brother's family registry at some point, so while he was recorded as living to 120, he was actually only around 105

Apparently when old man Shigechiyo was adopted into another family in his youth, he was made to take over the family registry of their deceased son (also named Shigechiyo), which meant he ended up living his whole life registered as roughly 15 years older than his actual age.
    199AnonymousSep 22, 2026 22:26
    Re: #194
Ah, so that makes him 105

    Background and Key Points

Extreme-age claims can’t be confirmed from a single document like an ID card or family registry alone. Certifying bodies such as Guinness World Records typically require not just a birth certificate but a continuous paper trail spanning a person’s entire life, and regions that have seen more upheaval in governance or record-keeping tend to produce more age claims that are hard to verify. The case of Shigechiyo Izumi, which came up in the thread, is a good example: his family registry listed him as 120, but it’s been suggested that because he inherited another, deceased person’s registry through adoption, his recorded age may have been inflated by more than a decade. Likewise, this claim of 130 years can’t be settled by the ID card alone — independent verification will be the key question going forward.
