  • The Appeal of Manual Transmissions: 5ch Says ‘I Just Want to Press the Clutch’

A thread on 5ch’s “Live: Anything Goes” board titled “Why would anyone want to drive a manual car?” turned into a mini showdown between automatic and manual fans. The thread starter, who saw shifting gears as a “hassle,” kicked off the debate — manual fans fired back, citing the feel of changing gears and the sensation of working the clutch as the whole appeal. The discussion went beyond everyday practicality in the city, touching on off-road driving, farm work, a new transmission for kei trucks, and even how manual operation differs on motorcycles.

Re: #142 Isn't it because of the sequential shift? It's super easy in cars too — though cars with that setup are pretty rare.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Even today, a standard driver’s license in Japan lets you obtain and drive a manual car, but most people opt for an automatic-only license at driving school, and automatics are said to account for over 90% of new car sales domestically. The thread split over a values question — whether the “hassle” of shifting gears is a nuisance or a pleasure — pitting people who praised the thrill of changing gears against those who argued it’s just extra work in city driving. Opinions also diverged on off-road driving: some argued that with today’s advanced 4WD and diff-lock systems, AT and EV are actually safer, while others held that manuals are traditionally better suited to it, with no clear resolution. Worth noting on the topic of bump-starting: most current cars are built so the starting system won’t function at all unless the clutch is disengaged, meaning the old-school image no longer matches reality.

  • Buyers of Prostitution Could Face Punishment Too — 5ch: “Crack Down and It’ll Just Go Underground”

As a countermeasure against “tachinbo” (streetwalkers soliciting customers), a proposal to make buyers punishable too was a hot topic on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Live News) board. Under the current Anti-Prostitution Law, licensed sex establishments are regulated separately as “managed prostitution,” while only street soliciting and waiting for customers are punishable — leaving little in the way of penalties for buyers. In the thread, opinions split between those who said tightening regulation would just push things underground, and those who said it would at least reduce the problem on the streets, with some also explaining that brothels/parlors aren’t the subject of this particular debate.

Brothels have nothing to do with this.
This is an attempt to punish certain acts on the seller's side, to balance out the fact that street soliciting and touting by buyers is already punishable. Managed prostitution only punishes the managers (the ones running the operation) in the first place — sellers themselves aren't punished, and there's no incentive to touch the buyer side there.

    Re: #119
    Prostitution is a crime 🥺

Background and key points of this topic

The current Anti-Prostitution Law doesn’t criminalize the act of prostitution itself, but soliciting or waiting for customers in a way visible to the public is punishable. Managed prostitution is structured so that only the operator side is punished, and licensed brothels/parlors aren’t the subject of this particular debate. The term “Nordic model” came up in the thread, but that model properly refers to a system that punishes only buyers and not sellers at all — an easy point of confusion, since it differs from this proposal, which assumes punishment on both sides. Opinions split between the view that tightening regulation will just push things underground, and the view that it will at least reduce street soliciting, and it’s worth noting that the claim that NPOs are involved for the sake of grant money remains unsubstantiated speculation.

  • ‘I want a relationship without sex’ post sparks debate on 5ch

    Re: #147
And you don't need to be attached to connecting with people or living alongside them either, then

Background and key points of the debate

The term “sex-averse” used by the poster is a self-description, not a medical diagnosis. The thread mainly split over two questions: how to distinguish a romantic relationship from a friendship, and how a partner’s sex drive should be satisfied if the couple isn’t having sex. Some pointed out that many married couples end up having less sex anyway, with some users saying what matters is that the relationship continues, not whether sex is part of it. Others shared their own experience of spending years with someone without ever becoming physical, suggesting that whether sex is a prerequisite for a relationship varies hugely depending on the person. Some replies pushed too far into the poster’s health or upbringing, or made sweeping generalizations about women, and those have been left out of this writeup.

The thread also wandered into why bridges are designed to be so exposed, whether funnels are actually practical weapons, and why mobile suits’ limited range forces the mothership itself onto the front line.

It's outer space, so there's no air resistance to worry about,

By the way, in WWII the main purpose of anti-aircraft guns was 'disrupt the enemy plane's attack run' >>> 'shoot the enemy plane down.'

The whole 'visual aiming' thing doesn't add up either.
Tracking and firing at a moving target is local processing, so jamming shouldn't matter.
Even mobile suits detect approaching objects and sound a warning, so they should be able to track it.

If you prioritize efficiency too much, the most practical mass-production unit ends up looking like this:

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In the Gundam universe, the presence of “Minovsky particles,” which jam radio waves, disables long-range radar and missile guidance, which is why the setting emphasizes visual confirmation and close-range combat. This discussion takes that premise as a given and asks how mobile suits’ own sensor capabilities square with the role of shipboard machine guns — it’s worth noting there’s no officially confirmed answer here; this is purely fan speculation. The thread split between those arguing that locally-controlled computers should be able to process information equivalent to visual targeting, and those countering that under Minovsky particle interference, visual aiming is unavoidable regardless — no consensus was reached. On the exposed bridge design, some pointed out that the reasoning likely has less to do with in-universe logic and more to do with production considerations tied to toy sales.

  • Edo-era tavern food was “awful” — tales of pricey andon lamp oil and tuna treated as garbage

A thread titled “I want to time-slip to the Edo period and eat and drink at a tavern” filled up with concrete details about food life in old Edo. Contributors noted that lighting a single andon lamp for five hours cost the equivalent of about 500 yen today, so commoners didn’t waste rapeseed oil; that soy sauce didn’t spread among ordinary people until the mid-Edo period; and that tuna spoiled fast and was often already going off by the time it reached Edo, making it cheap, near-worthless fish for a long stretch of history. The thread showed a clear temperature gap between curious voices saying “I’d love to try it” and cooler ones replying “it’s actually terrible.”

Background and key points of this discussion

Many of the claims about Edo-era food life were grounded in actual history. Multiple studies note that oil for andon lamps (rapeseed oil) was expensive for commoners, and that living through dark nights was simply normal life. Soy sauce production only took off in earnest from the Genroku era onward, and is said to have spread widely among ordinary people from the mid-Edo period on. It’s also true that tuna was treated as cheap fish — its reputation only improved once the technique of marinating it in soy sauce (“zuke”) was established. Eating meat was officially taboo, but shops that served game under renamed labels like “botan” (boar), “sakura” (horse), and “momiji” (venison) genuinely existed. The thread showed a clear gap between curiosity — “I’d love to try it” — and the cooler reality check of “it’s actually bad” — but given the constraints on food preservation and hygiene at the time, the honest answer is that Edo-era food simply can’t be judged fairly by modern standards of taste.

  • “One Meal a Day” Health Claims Spark Debate on VIP, Turns Into a Citation War

A thread listing the benefits of eating one meal a day went up on Nico Soku VIP. The OP cited saving time and money and a lower risk of lifestyle diseases, but replies pushed back hard. Faced with claims like “you’re just losing muscle, not fat” and “you won’t get enough protein,” the OP tried to counter with papers and articles on autophagy. Anecdotes piled up on both sides — some said years of one-meal-a-day eating left them feeling fine, others said it wrecked their health — and the thread spiraled into a broader debate over meal frequency and timing.

Why does the caution/warning part show up first when you ask about autophagy's benefits?
You're clearly just cherry-picking the warning section

Background and Key Points of This Debate

One meal a day (OMAD) and the “autophagy” eating approach — built around fasting windows of 16 hours or more — is a health trend that’s spread over the past few years through social media and business self-help books. Autophagy is the cellular process of breaking down and recycling unneeded proteins, and while research (mostly in animal studies) continues to advance, large-scale clinical data directly linking human meal frequency to health outcomes is still limited. In the thread, the “there are papers backing this” camp and the “you’re just losing muscle and metabolism” camp talk past each other without ever really engaging, and neither side addresses how much individual factors like body type or activity level might matter. Whether there’s a hard ceiling on how much protein the body can absorb in one sitting is also a genuinely contested question among experts — worth keeping in mind that the article shared in the thread represents just one viewpoint among several.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nico Soku VIP) thread “[Sad News] The Benefits of Eating One Meal a Day Are Almost Too Numerous wwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.”

  • 3 Months at the Gym, Bench Maxed at 25kg — 5ch: ‘Even a Grade-Schooler Could Lift That’

When the thread starter posted that after three months at the gym, their bench press limit was still just 25kg, 5ch users reacted with a flood of astonished comments like “that’s a weight even a grade-schooler could lift” and “there must be some kind of medical issue.” The poster, who is 171cm and 65kg, said they go to the gym three times a week and also walk four times a week, but other participants pointed out that beginners typically see much bigger gains in three months, and some questioned the efficiency of the 10-reps-times-3-sets approach itself. Meanwhile, longtime lifters offered concrete advice, noting that sticking with the same load lets the body adapt and progress stall — turning the thread into more than just mockery.

    Re: #162
Once your muscles adapt to the stimulus you'll plateau fast
Better to vary the load instead of sticking with the same weight

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

In bench press terminology, the weight usually refers to the max you can barely lift for a single rep — which is different from a weight you can handle for multiple reps, like 10 reps x 3 sets (this distinction underlies the calculation in comment #59). It’s said that even beginners commonly reach around 1 to 1.5 times their bodyweight within a few months, which is the benchmark behind why commenters saw 25kg as low. Also, as touched on in comments #166 and #168, “plateauing” — where muscles adapt to the same weight and routine, causing progress to stall — is a common phenomenon in strength training, and is said to require changing up form or programming. The comments about “illness” or “being sick” in the thread are less factual claims and more part of the exaggeration-heavy teasing culture of the board; it’s worth noting no actual medical diagnosis was involved.

In a survey on marriage attitudes conducted by Japan’s Children and Families Agency among roughly 44,000 unmarried people aged 15 to 39, 35.1% said they “have no intention of marrying” — closing in on the 37.5% who said they “want to marry eventually.” The figures, released as interim results from a nationwide web survey of 100,000 people, were picked up on 5ch’s Nanchara Jikkyou G (Live News) board, sparking a wide-ranging debate over the agency’s reason for existing, how its budget is spent, and the root causes of Japan’s declining birthrate. Posters offered a string of theories — the pension system, changing family structures, women entering the workforce — while opinions split sharply between criticism of the agency and its defense.

35% of Unmarried Young People Say They “Have No Intention of Marrying” — Children and Families Agency’s Large-Scale Youth Survey

The Children and Families Agency conducted a web survey of 100,000 people nationwide aged 15 to 39 and has released interim tabulation results.

There were roughly 68,000 valid responses. Among the roughly 44,000 unmarried respondents who were asked about their attitude toward marriage, 37.5% said they “want to marry eventually,” followed by 35.1% who said they “have no intention of marrying.”

Right now, young people's pension taxes and social insurance premiums get spread out evenly and go toward the elderly's pensions and medical costs.

Instead, why not cut the basic pension and medical subsidies, and have part of a person's actual children's pension taxes and insurance premiums go directly to their own parents?

That's not it. The root cause of the declining birthrate is the pension system itself.
This system is the root of the problem.
Once you know you'll get a pension and won't struggle in old age, you can pursue your own life without worry.
That's why marriage gets delayed, and why people pile on more and more conditions when choosing a partner.
That's why, throughout history, regardless of race, civilization, religion, or marriage customs, birthrates decline everywhere in the world once economic growth kicks in.

This marks the 10th straight year the number has hit a new record low since record-keeping began in 1899. The total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman has in her lifetime) fell 0.01 points from the previous year to 1.14, also a record low.
From here on, the men and women born in the 1990s — back when the birthrate was still stable — are going to age out of their childbearing years, so what exactly is there to be hopeful about?

I agree that the collapse of the extended-family system and the shift to nuclear families raised child-rearing costs and led to the falling birthrate.

Corporate relocation systems that suit big companies, and mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflicts, deserve plenty of the blame too.

Now social media and everything else has made that visible, and in a Japan with no bright future in sight, you've got people who can't bear to saddle a kid with a life as bleak as their own or worse, plus people who can't even reach the starting line of marriage — that one-two punch is just brutal.

The problem is that nobody anticipated what was bound to happen once women entered the workforce, and no countermeasures were ever put in place.
Honestly, I keep thinking, what do these people even do all day at work?

Background and Key Points of Debate

What the Children and Families Agency released was an interim tabulation from a 100,000-person web survey, with about 68,000 valid responses; the pool asked about marriage intentions was limited to roughly 44,000 unmarried respondents. The agency was established in 2023 to consolidate child-related policy, and most of its budget is not newly created spending but a reallocation of social security spending — things like child allowances and childcare — that used to be split across different ministries. In the thread, criticism that “the budget is wasted” clashed with rebuttals that it “merely consolidated social security spending,” and this difference in starting assumptions is what’s driving posters to talk past each other. As for the causes of the declining birthrate, posters pointed to the pension system, changing family structures, and women’s employment status, among others — but none of these is an academically established single cause, and it’s worth noting they remain speculation confined to 5ch rather than settled fact.

    Leaving influence even after death
    Reviving even after being killed
Transferring your consciousness into someone else
I guess the whole concept here is Nen abilities specialized around simply refusing to die

    Background and Discussion Points

Hunter x Hunter is well known for its irregular publication schedule, largely due to author Yoshihiro Togashi’s health issues, and this thread’s interest in “how many chapters until it wraps up” and “how much manuscript is stockpiled” reflects that background. The story is currently mid-way through the Dark Continent arc and the Kakin succession arc running in parallel, with the princes’ Nen abilities and the Phantom Troupe’s movements depicted simultaneously — which regularly draws comments that the large cast makes the plot hard to follow. Opinions in the thread split over how Tserriednich, who has become something like the lead character of the succession struggle, is being handled: some said the story “was good until he started moving, then got lame,” while others voiced support for the banter between Prince Benjamin and the Phantom Troupe. The text-heavy page that became a talking point is also worth a note — it’s a form of the dense, monologue-style prose Togashi often uses, and the claim that it was AI-generated isn’t factual, just a reader’s joke.

  • Still Don’t Understand Why Sayashi Riho Rushed Her Graduation

A thread popped up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board looking back at why Sayashi Riho, who served as the ace of Morning Musume。’14, abruptly rushed her graduation. Many posters speculated that being treated as “a cut above the rest” created distance between her and her peers and fellow members, and that being pushed to constantly perfect her singing and dancing with no one to confide in took a heavy mental toll. Others were harsher, questioning whether she truly had the skill to back up the ace role, while some pointed out that other past aces had also suffered health problems in the position — expanding the discussion into whether Hello! Project’s whole “ace” system is even a good idea.

    1AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:05
I wish she'd stuck around longer
    23AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:35
The kind of "poor lonely her" teasing they did back then would absolutely spark a firestorm if it happened today
    31AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:41
    Re: #23
Back then, even Oda got teased by her manager during a Morning Musume broadcast, and it stirred up a bit of controversy on Ookami (the Hello! Project fan board) the next day.
That kind of thing would never fly now.
    25AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:37
Well, if you single out just one person for special treatment from the start, of course her peers and other members won't be thrilled about it.
While Chayu was around it was somehow kept in check, but the adults in charge should've supported her better.
    34AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:43
    Re: #25
That level of special treatment really was something else.
There are members in other idol groups who get pushed hard as the sole center and just take it in stride,
    but Sayashi wasn't that type.
    37AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:46
    Re: #34
If you're the ace, you have to be able to endure standing alone at the top.
    38AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:46
People say she was crushed by the pressure, but before that she was totally into the special treatment and riding high, so that's not quite the full story.
Her skills stopped improving, she couldn't keep up with her own ideal, mistakes piled up, her voice stopped coming out the way she wanted, she gained weight, and in the end she broke down.
    44AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:49
    Re: #38
I think that was a big part of it too.
"I should be able to do this but I can't" → overthinking leads to more mistakes → breaking down → "I need to try even harder" — a vicious spiral.
    50AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:53
But then again, if you lighten her load by giving lines to someone else, she'd spiral thinking she'd been demoted, so that's no better either.
    51AnonymousAug 31, 2026 15:54
    Re: #50
    Seriously, that's exactly it.
    55AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:08
Aces pretty much always end up broken. Abe and Goto both gained weight, and Takahashi coped by binge-shopping.
    60AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:32
    Re: #55
Why though? Does it really put that much pressure on you?
    63AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:36
A single lone ace is just too much to ask of a teenage girl.
Look at John and Paul, or Kato-chan and Ken-chan (a famous Japanese comedy duo) —
legendary groups need two people at the top.
    They should've made it a two-top with Chan-san instead.
    71AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:42
    Re: #63
Even as a teenager, if she'd had a personality suited to opening up easily, she could've shared her worries with the other members.
But Sayashi was clearly being pushed alone with special treatment,
and I think that position made it hard to share worries with people around her.
    68AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:39
It couldn't be helped, but it's a shame the 9th generation ended up at the very top so quickly.
If only they'd worked harder recruiting more 7th and 8th gen members.
    79AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:45
    Re: #68
Actually, wasn't there a pretty big gap before the 9th generation joined?
    73AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:42
The opposite, actually — a single top suited her better.
Once it became like a two-top with Oda and their singing got compared, that's what broke her.
    75AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:44
    Re: #73
She broke down because it looked like she was no longer going to be the one standout on her own.
    85AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:48
    Re: #73
And Oda was so unfazed by it all, lol.
Oda had her own worries in her own way, but Sayashi couldn't know that, so she'd end up comparing herself —
worrying about making mistakes and then making even more mistakes because of it.
    101AnonymousAug 31, 2026 16:59
These days there are plenty of people who can dance about as well as Sayashi could back then.
    102AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:01
    Re: #101
It's not that there are more of them — back then, showbiz was basically the only outlet to be seen.
Now there are so many platforms to post on that being at Sayashi's level isn't even something to brag about anymore.

    She got absolutely slammed.
People called it the "Saya System" (mocking how routines and songs seemed built entirely around her).

    118AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:27
Well, honestly, up to now Nacchi (Nakazawa Yuko) was really the only true "ace."
Goto Maki and Takahashi Ai weren't really aces either…
Maybe Sayashi is closer to that too.

Somewhere floating in between Goto and Takahashi, I guess.
    128AnonymousAug 31, 2026 17:36
Sounds like Sayashi's putting out another mini album.
Personally, I liked her stuff better before she switched agencies.

Thanks to Aeon (the retail chain that hosted her release events), the release event got scrapped.

Back then everyone got teased to some degree, big or small.
Ikuta got made to cry, Oda got teased by her manager too —
it was an era when some people thought saying harsh things was funny.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Sayashi Riho was picked as the ace of Morning Musume。’14 in 2014, but abruptly announced her graduation in 2015, and the official reasons were never explained in detail. The “Saya System” mentioned in the thread was a nickname fans at the time used critically for choreography and song arrangements built entirely around her, which shows just how unusual her promotion was. After graduating she relocated her base of activities and later resumed entertainment work under a different agency, but the finer details of that process are only discussed in fragments even within the thread, with plenty of posts that don’t go beyond speculation. The thread was split between the view that isolation caused by special treatment was to blame and the view that she genuinely struggled on the skill side, such as singing ability, with some pointing out that other past “aces” also suffered health problems — making it a notable thread in that the discussion expanded all the way to questioning whether Hello! Project’s single-ace system is even a good idea.
