  • Which generation can’t use a computer? 5ch says: “Just teach yourself already 😥”

In a freewheeling chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, participants got into a lively discussion about the bands that were popular back in their school days, and who’s actually good or bad with computers. Alongside familiar names like GLAY, L’Arc-en-Ciel, and B’z, one post that brought up The Folk Crusaders, a group active in the 1960s, drew a reply from a poster in their 30s who said they’d never even heard of the band. The thread also touched on photos of Hololive VTubers Pekora and Flare, plus reactions to pictures of food people had ordered, with the topic constantly shifting. But what stood out most was a generational feud over whether it’s the “yutori generation” or “Gen Z” that can’t use a computer — and opinion split right down the middle.

I'm from the 'yutori' generation (Japan's relaxed-education cohort, born roughly late-80s to early-2000s), so I can't use a computer at all.

Background and key points of this discussion

The “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board isn’t tied to any single topic, so conversation just keeps rolling — and this thread was a typical example, with music, VTubers, and everyday-life topics constantly swapping in and out. Where opinions split was over which generation actually struggles with computers: some mocked the “yutori generation,” while others pushed back, arguing that “Gen Z,” having grown up smartphone-first, is actually more likely to be unfamiliar with basic PC tasks like file handling. It’s worth noting that various surveys and news reports have also flagged a rise in people from the post-smartphone generations who aren’t comfortable with basic PC operations — chipping away at the simple assumption that “younger generations are just better with machines.” Also worth noting: The Folk Crusaders were a veteran folk group who scored hits like “Kaette Kita Yopparai” (“The Returning Drunkard”) back in the 1960s, and the gap in name recognition across generations showed up clearly in how the thread reacted. Posts containing personal insults or sexual content that aren’t suitable for an article have been excluded.

  • Stream Hits 190,000 Concurrent Viewers, 5ch Reacts: “That’s Total Domination”

On the night of Sunday, August 30, 2026, a thread for live-commentary on the 24-Hour TV telethon went up on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (“Whatever’s On Live”) board, and it lit up with all kinds of chatter. A post claiming one stream’s concurrent viewer count had hit 190,000 drew stunned reactions of “that’s total domination,” while a photo of a meal posted in the thread sparked a mini-feud, with some doubting it was a “picture grabbed off the net” and others insisting “I ate it myself.” Elsewhere, the thread veered off in classic live-commentary fashion into anime and game character-guessing quizzes and idle chat about chilled tofu.

Background and Key Points Behind This Topic

“Nandemo Jikkyo G” (“Whatever’s On Live”) is one of 5ch’s dedicated live-commentary boards, where users post real-time reactions while watching TV programs or livestreams, and this particular day drew a flood of posts timed to the 24-Hour TV broadcast. A hallmark of these live-commentary threads is that the conversation drifts away from the program itself, with side topics running in parallel — viewer-count chatter, images from unrelated streams or works, and so on. True to form, this thread saw simultaneous character-guessing quizzes for completely unrelated content like Furina, Blue Archive, and Shigure Ui. It’s worth noting that the “190,000 viewers” figure was simply a number one poster typed in, not an official count released by any broadcaster or platform. Meanwhile, the meal photo sparked back-and-forth between a poster insisting “I ate it myself” and skeptics claiming it was “a picture grabbed off the internet,” though nothing in the thread could objectively settle which side was right.

  • Could a Kendo Club Member with a Wooden Sword Beat a Heavyweight Boxer? 5ch Erupts in Debate

A thread has caught fire on 5ch after a post claiming, “If a kendo club member picked up a wooden sword, he could even beat a heavyweight pro boxer.” One camp argued the kendo fighter has the edge if he can endure long enough to close the distance, using the wooden sword’s reach and lethality as his weapon; the other countered that a heavyweight boxer’s punch would end things long before that. Commenters cited the legend of Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro’s duel at Ganryu Island, as well as Tenshin Nasukawa’s swift KO loss to Floyd Mayweather, as the debate split over which matters more in a fight: “distance control” or “the weight of a single blow.”

No but seriously, a guy with a wooden sword is helpless unless he's within striking range.
A baseball player with a ball can keep firing away, whether it's 5 meters or 10.
In a real fight with balls or rocks flying, a baseball player used to that kind of thing is basically unbeatable.
Even a 2-meter-tall wrestler would go down.

Let's say a baseball player and a kendo fighter face off in a duel 20 meters apart.
The kendo fighter holds the wooden sword vertically in front of his body for defense and charges straight in.
Even someone slow can cover 20 meters and close the distance in 5-6 seconds.
Can the baseball player really get off 5 pitches in that time?
And this is a guy who already struggles to hit the target in a strikeout contest — how's he supposed to land a fatal shot on someone charging at him with his vitals covered?
The instant the kendo fighter closes the gap, it's one strike to the skull and the baseball player's dead.
    136AnonymousAug 30, 2026 10:36
The reach is completely different, so if the opponent steps in, just use footwork and the sword tip to counter into the face, throat, or solar plexus.
Being able to answer while backing away is the biggest advantage.
If he's slowly closing in, just keep landing fast thrusts to the face and it's a landslide win.

The reason the Kanto Rengo (a real-life delinquent gang) killed people with bats as a group is this:
if you're caught carrying a wooden sword without belonging to a kendo club, you could be charged with a firearms-and-swords violation, and the sentence is harsher.
With a bat, you can claim you were just about to play some casual baseball.
Plus, attacking as a group makes it unclear who actually landed the killing blow.

In an actual boxing match, the opponent is doing boxing too, you know

Background and key points of this debate

This kind of “who would win in a mixed-discipline fight” thread is a 5ch staple, and here the difference between a solid wooden sword (bokuto) and a bamboo shinai became the starting point. Indeed, thrusting attacks with a shinai are considered dangerous enough to be banned for anyone below high school age, and a wooden sword is said to be even more lethal — while the boxer’s lifeline is how many punches he can land in the few seconds it takes his opponent to close the distance. The Nasukawa-Mayweather bout cited in the thread was a 2018 exhibition match rather than an official title fight, which is worth noting. Likewise, the Ganryu Island legend of Miyamoto Musashi killing Sasaki Kojiro with a wooden sword has competing historical accounts — including a theory that Musashi ambushed Kojiro with the help of his disciples — and isn’t settled fact. The thread also brings up a real group, the Kanto Rengo, and their choice of weapons, but this is general commentary drawing on past incidents rather than a reference to any specific act or victim. Overall, opinions remain split across three axes — “distance,” “reaction speed,” and “the weight of a single blow” — with no resolution in sight.

From there the conversation drifted into ribbing regulars for still playing card games as adults, a story about a girlfriend’s birthday gift of a card box turning out to duplicate cards the poster had already bought as singles on release day, and finally lunch photos and news about a new Hololive gacha, as the chat rambled on.

    Background and Talking Points

Threads like this one come from 5ch’s “Live: Anything Goes” board, a topic-free chat space where each participant brings their own subject. This time the focus was “hashigo” (梯子, literally “ladder”), card-game community slang for entering multiple official Duel Masters store tournaments (“CS”) held the same day, moving between venues to try to clear the qualifiers. When a poster unfamiliar with the term misread it as “isu” (椅子, “chair”), opinions split over whether it was a deliberate joke or a genuine misreading. Later in the thread, jabs at grown adults for still playing card games crossed with rebuttals of “I do have a girlfriend,” in a familiar back-and-forth about hobbies and age. A story about a birthday-gift card box turning out to duplicate cards the poster had already bought as singles on release day struck a chord as a relatable collector’s mishap, giving this otherwise ordinary chat thread a small glimpse of very human moments.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Live: Anything Goes board) thread “Funa’s Secretly Sucking Octopus Behind the Scenes, Funari🐙(・o・🍬)🏰.”

  • Hololive merch sales hit ¥5 billion, sparking buzz — 5ch: “Half of that’s probably the talents buying their own stuff”

In a chat thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” board, several topics heated up in parallel. What stood out most was a post claiming Hololive-related merchandise sales had reached “¥5 billion,” which set off speculation about its relationship to Super Chat (donation) income, and whether part of the sales figure came from the talents themselves buying their own goods. The thread also mixed in exchanges about the accuracy of AI-generated images and illustrations, along with reactions to a personal account about a poster’s upbringing — a real grab-bag of both light and heavy topics sitting side by side.

Background and points of debate on this topic

The “¥5 billion in merch sales” figure that came up in the thread originates from a 5ch post — it’s worth noting this is not an official number released by any management office or company. VTuber revenue is split across multiple pillars, including Super Chats (donations), merchandise sales, and stream ad income, so a rise in merch sales doesn’t necessarily mean donation income has fallen — in some cases total revenue stays stable even when Super Chat income cools off. The thread mixed two competing theories — that strong merch sales might be the flip side of falling Super Chat income, and that the talents’ own purchases of their own merch might be inflating the sales figure — but both remain pure speculation. Alongside this, the thread also carried unrelated topics of very different weight, from judging AI-generated images and illustrations to a heavy personal account of someone’s upbringing. That such a wide range of tones can coexist in a single thread is very much characteristic of the Nandemo Jikkyou board.

A review claiming that a woman who joined Mitsubishi Heavy Industries quit because “it wasn’t the stylish office I’d pictured before joining” was shared on 5ch’s Anything Goes Live board (livegalileo), drawing 43 replies. Thread posters wondered what kind of workplace the words “heavy industries” were even supposed to conjure up, floated the dream image of a floor-to-ceiling glass office straight out of a TV drama, and posted AI-generated pictures of their “ideal office.” Others, however, posted actual photos of the real Marunouchi headquarters, pointing out that the atmosphere can vary a lot depending on which department you’re assigned to.

Veteran senior → Knows the section chief's true nature. Competent, and when "the chick" (マンコ, crude 5ch slang used dismissively for a female coworker) screws up, doesn't even scold her — just says "Forget that, let's fix the problem first."

Senior coworker → When the chick's mistake happens, plays the reassuring smile-and-pat-on-the-shoulder role: "Just leave it to the veteran, like he said."

Colleague → Insanely competent. Blunt and unfriendly. Has the section chief's total trust. Thinks the exact opposite of the chick — tsundere type. Stylish, "this is good enough as it is" attitude. Regular at the bar. Plays the Kimutaku (heartthrob actor Takuya Kimura) role.

    Background and Key Points

This review follows a familiar pattern seen on job-change and employment review sites: complaints about the gap between how imposing a company’s name sounds and what the actual workplace is like. Heavy-industry manufacturers like Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are primarily in the business of building factories and plants, so many such companies have a shop-floor culture that’s a world away from the glass-walled high-rise offices seen in TV dramas. What really got the thread going wasn’t so much the rights or wrongs of the review itself, but how strikingly uniform people’s mental image of a “stylish office” turned out to be, shaped heavily by generation and media exposure — the trend of posters generating their own “ideal office” images with AI became the symbol of that. At the same time, actual photos of the real Marunouchi headquarters were also posted, and it’s worth adding, since it doesn’t come through from the replies alone, that the impression a workplace gives can vary enormously depending on the department and location an employee is assigned to. It should also be noted that some reactions to the review included posts generalizing and disparaging “women’s advancement in the workforce” — since treating one poster’s personal experience as representative of women as a whole is an unfounded generalization, those replies have been excluded from this article.

※This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Anything Goes Live) thread “[Sad News] Woman: “I joined Mitsubishi Heavy Industries but it wasn’t stylish… I’m quitting”.”

  • Is the Only Point of Conversation to ‘Get Closer’ to Someone? 5ch Debate Goes in Circles

“Isn’t the only point of talking to someone to become closer with them?” A question posted to 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board sparked a long back-and-forth. The thread’s original poster repeated the claim that “even if there are benefits, that’s all conversation really amounts to,” while other posters pushed back with arguments like “you can learn things you didn’t know” and “you can gain insights.” The discussion gradually shifted into a semantic battle over the difference between “meaningless” and “not feeling the need for it,” and the two sides never reached common ground.

I used the phrase "you can enjoy benefits," but I'm not saying I only have practical gain in mind when I talk to people. I'm simply saying that's about all the meaning conversation has.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

This thread is a textbook example of how the kind of talking-past-each-other over definitions that’s common on anonymous forums can escalate. The original poster never budged from the premise that “conversation has no meaning beyond getting closer to someone,” while those pushing back treated “meaning,” “necessity,” and “value” as separate concepts — and this mismatch in terminology is a big part of why the discussion never quite connected. Because text-only exchanges don’t convey tone of voice or facial expression, minor nitpicks over wording are easily read as personal attacks, and as the thread went on, the focus shifted away from the actual content toward repeatedly questioning whether the other side had correctly understood one’s argument. There’s no clear right answer to a philosophical question like this one, and the two sides never closed the gap between their positions.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsspeed VIP) thread “What’s the Point of Talking to Other People?“

  • “How Do You Get NEETs to Work?” 5channers Debate: Laziness or Broken System?

A thread titled “Let’s seriously think about how to save (get working) NEETs today” popped up on 5ch’s Newsflash VIP board, but the discussion quickly drifted away from concrete solutions and into a clash over whether NEETs are simply “spoiled” or victims of structural issues like Japan’s new-graduate hiring system and academic credentialism. The original poster, who revealed he’s a civil servant earning 6.2 million yen a year, drew fire from those arguing “it’s rich to have an easy job yourself while telling others to take low-paying work,” while others fired back that “there are jobs anyone can get hired for — not working is just being spoiled.” Plenty of replies also pointed out how bullying-driven school refusal and the difficulty of re-entering the job market after missing the new-graduate hiring window complicate the picture.

    Seriously.
This guy calls trivial stuff “effort” and lectures people to just do it.
His idea of “effort” is probably something like:
(grumbling “ugh, so tired” while cramming for entrance exams with friends)
(grumbling “ugh, so tired” while having a blast at university with friends)
(grumbling “ugh, so tired” while cheerfully landing your “dream job” through new-grad hiring with everyone around you)
(grumbling “ugh, so tired” while your girlfriend keeps you satisfied and you breeze through new-hire training with coworkers)
(grumbling “ugh, so tired” while getting laid nonstop by your girlfriend, occasionally cramming for some throwaway certification, and picking your nose your way up to a raise)
That's about the level of “effort” we're talking — not really effort at all.

He's only ever lived a life that soft, so he probably doesn't get that once you miss university and the new-grad hiring window, society doesn't even let you attempt this kind of “effort” anymore — you're flatly denied the chance to even try for your “dream job.”

Personally I think just working at all, at any age, is admirable — but in reality, if it's not “appropriate for your age,” you get mocked for it.
NEETs are afraid of that, so they aim for a come-from-behind home run — landing a well-treated job out of nowhere — which is why they're obsessed with getting certifications.
NEETs are weirdly fixated on qualifications, aren't they?

It's effortless, and lecturing people from above while basking in a sense of superiority feels great.
But the result of that attitude is Japan's current 5 million middle-aged NEETs.
I think that's exactly what happens when nobody bothers to ask “why” from the person's own side.

There's probably a lot of variety among NEETs, but I think some of them could absolutely reintegrate into society.
I think the right move is to start by helping the group that looks relatively easiest to bring back first.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

In Japan, the deeply entrenched practice of “new-graduate lump-sum hiring” (shinsotsu ikkatsu saiyō) means anyone who doesn’t land a full-time job straight out of school tends to be at a disadvantage in the job market from then on — and it’s long been pointed out that this structure makes it hard for people who missed the new-graduate window due to bullying or school refusal to get a second chance. Where opinions in the thread split was over where to draw the line between calling this “individual laziness” versus “a flaw in the social system,” and neither side showed much sign of budging. There were also concerns raised about reliance on welfare, and about the psychology of chasing a single certification for a comeback, but much of the back-and-forth tended to slide into emotional exchanges built around each other’s income or career history — and how little in the way of concrete solutions actually came up is something that’s easy to miss from the thread text alone.

  • Is ‘Effort Beats Talent’ a Dead Phrase Now? 5ch: ‘If You’re a Genius, Putting in Effort Is Easy’

A thread on 5ch debated whether the old belief that “effort surpasses talent” has faded from view. Comments piled up like “talented people work hard too, so in the end it still comes down to talent” and “if you’re a genius, putting in effort is easy — it’s way more impressive when someone with no talent works hard,” and the discussion spread into how luck and environment factor in alongside talent and effort. Posters brought up plenty of concrete examples — like a 10-year-old overtaking a 20-year veteran at the Puyo Puyo world championship in just a month, or the theory that sprint speed comes down to leg length multiplied by turnover rate — making it a lively topic that couldn’t be settled with simple willpower platitudes.

Like, say you have a talent for languages and you work hard to develop that ability further — you could say you correctly judged your own talent and succeeded
But if that same person had no talent for math and abandoned languages to grind at math instead, would that count as success?
    367AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:38

    Re: #375
Where do you draw the line on what counts as talent?
Kazushige did go pro, so from an ordinary person's perspective he's incredibly talented — but if talent doesn't count unless you reach the very top, then I guess he doesn't have it

    Re: #375
Both guys mentioned as examples had fathers who were hardcore hard workers, while the sons weren't so much — doesn't that actually highlight how important effort is?

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The phrase “effort surpasses talent” is said to trace back to the Showa-era spirit-sports-manga mindset, and in recent years terms like “parent gacha” — which frame one’s origins and innate qualities as products of luck — have spread, increasingly casting the two ideas as opposites. What split opinion in the thread was whether effort should be seen as “a necessary condition for great achievement” or as “the condition that determines the outcome.” Some argued that since the closer you get to the top the harder the talented ones are also working, effort alone can rarely close the gap; others pointed out that whether talent blossoms at all is itself shaped by environment and luck. It’s worth noting the thread offered no concrete data on the correlation between effort and results — this was a discussion built purely on individual impressions and anecdotes.

  • Is Life Fun Past 40 and Single? 5ch Split After ‘Not Fun At All’ Post

A thread titled “I want to ask those over 40 and single — is life fun?” appeared on 5ch’s Hello! Project chat board. Replies started off heavy, with comments like “Not fun at all” and “Even my oshi-katsu (fan support activities for idols) started to feel empty, so I quit.” From there the discussion spread to married posters venting, philosophical debates over why people go to the gym, and even calculations of retirement pensions. The thread split over questions like whether devoting yourself to a hobby while single makes you a “loser,” whether working out is really just overcompensating for insecurity, and whether a pension alone is enough to live on in old age.

Not fun at all for me.
Even oshi-katsu (idol fan support activities) started feeling hollow, so I quit.

I've been married for 20-odd years now and life's fulfilling.
Meanwhile my awful older sister, who never could get married because her personality's so bad, is closing in on 60 and still living a miserable life taking her anger out on everyone around her at every opportunity.

Muscle gives off intimidation, you know.
Knowing you could beat someone up if it came down to it gives you mental peace of mind, and it makes the other guy instinctively scared, which tends to work in your favor in life generally.
Just like how the difference in military strength between the US, Russia, and Japan shows up as a difference in diplomatic leverage.

At 60 my income drops to less than half, and if I keep up my current lifestyle by chipping away at my meager severance, I'll have zero savings by the time I start collecting my pension.
After taxes that pension will probably come out to around 120,000 yen a month.
Finally get to enjoy being unemployed, only to live in dire poverty — guess I'll just retire from life itself after about 2 years. Goodbye.
    203AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:43
    Re: #179
You can start collecting your pension at 60, right?
It gets cut by 24%, but someone who starts at 65 doesn't catch up to someone who started at 60 until their 80th birthday.
Even if you draw down 50,000 yen a month from savings on top of your pension, that's only 600,000 yen a year.
If you keep working until 65 while collecting your pension and save up 6 million yen, you won't have money troubles until 75.
There's inflation and stuff to consider, but still — what exactly is that "20 million yen" the government keeps talking about even for?
I feel like once you're past 65 there's barely any big expenses left anyway.

Some people get obsessed with muscle training because their self-esteem was low to begin with —
like a complex about being short, for instance.
In a sense it's the weak saving themselves.

At least having a real academic background is something.
There was a sad piece of work who boasted to "Wolf" about getting into an art college through an essay-based exam and "graduating" while basically just checking in at the school nurse's office the whole time (a euphemism for barely attending due to being unable to handle regular classes).

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s employee pension (kosei nenkin) is designed to start payments at age 65 in principle, but if you claim early starting at 60, the amount is reduced by 0.4% per month, for a maximum reduction of 24%. The calculations cited in the thread follow this system, so they aren’t baseless numbers. That said, pension amounts vary widely from person to person depending on enrollment period and income, so it would be premature to apply one poster’s example directly to your own retirement planning. The other major topic — “why lift weights” — was discussed with a mix of motives all tangled together, from maintaining health to overcoming personal complexes to acquiring physical intimidation in social situations, without ever settling on one conclusion. As for the relationship between being single and life satisfaction, the thread simply lines up anecdotes from married and single posters side by side; no statistical backing is offered, so readers should keep in mind that this stays firmly in the realm of personal impressions.
