  • Dishwashers ‘more of a lifesaver than expected’ — 5ch: ‘Pre-rinsing is just a quick rinse, so easy’

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Newsoku VIP board where a poster reported that after starting to use a dishwasher, it turned out to be ‘more of a lifesaver than expected.’ The original poster bought a secondhand countertop model for just a few thousand yen and says cleanup after cooking pasta became dramatically easier. Replies poured in with the questions everyone wonders about before buying one: whether pre-rinsing to remove oily grime is really necessary, how people find space to install the thing, and whether it’s big enough inside to fit large cookware like frying pans. On the other hand, there were also skeptical takes like ‘if you still have to pre-rinse, what’s the point’ and ‘you can just wash things between cooking steps,’ sparking a debate over how much dishwashers actually streamline housework.

The main reason I hesitate to buy one is the maintenance you have to do at practically a daily level.

    63AnonymousSep 1, 2026 17:04
Some people ask 'what about the frying pan?' but I wash cookware like that between cooking steps anyway.
Too many people can only think in all-or-nothing terms.
Just washing the dishes after a meal in the dishwasher —
even just that alone saves a decent amount of time.

    Re: #63
    That's unfair to say.
I've had chronic 'housewife's eczema' (dishpan hands) that won't heal for years, so I can't wash dishes without gloves — which means washing just the frying pan while cooking isn't an option for me.
That's why, if I'm going to pre-rinse at all, I just end up doing the whole wash right then.
I'm not against dishwashers at all, though somebody in here is acting unhinged.
The dishwasher I own doesn't fit a frying pan, so I ended up not using it anymore, but if it fit I'd probably still be using it.

If you cook normally, the dishes pile up fast — not just the frying pan, but mixing bowls, pots, ladles, the rice cooker's inner lid, colanders, cooking chopsticks, measuring cups. You can usually wash most of that between cooking steps, but not having to wash the dishes after a meal — think about how much that benefits time-strapped modern people.

Seriously, what even is this phenomenon?
Does it touch on some kind of complex people have?
If so, it's weird that people single out countertop models as the enemy, though.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Countertop dishwashers that require no installation work and can simply be placed in the kitchen are widely available at low prices, and it’s not unusual to find secondhand units for just a few thousand yen. In the thread, real examples came up too, like one bought secondhand for 6,000 yen and another for 15,960 yen. On the other hand, many models have small interior capacities that can’t fit frying pans or pots, and as pointed out in the replies, the hassle of pre-rinsing and securing installation space tend to be hurdles before buying. Where opinions in the thread diverged was over how much benefit people actually feel from a dishwasher — those who want to offload housework entirely clashed with those who feel it’s enough to just wash things bit by bit between cooking steps. Note that the later part of the thread devolved into an exchange of personal attacks over people’s experiences using it; this article focuses only on the exchanges related to the product and how it’s used.

  • NYC: Woman Goes on Knife Stabbing Spree, Cop Opens Fire After Taser Fails to Stop Her

In New York’s Times Square, a woman armed with two kitchen knives repeatedly stabbed passersby, killing one woman and injuring one man. Officers who responded fired a Taser, but the woman pulled out the probes herself and kept advancing with the knife still in hand, so an officer drew his gun and fired, killing her. Video of the incident spread online, and on 5channel opinions were split — speculation over why the Taser didn’t work, debate over whether shooting her was justified given how many officers were on scene, and comparisons suggesting Japanese police might have handled it differently.

Someone send over a sasumata from Japan (a pronged pole police use to pin down suspects). With this many officers they could've taken her down without a scratch
    43AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:02
Back in the day in Japan, riot police would've swarmed her with like 5 shields and beaten her down
    44AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:02
Looks like she could've been subdued with a shield and a baton, but I guess they shoot because it's a gun society
    45AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:03
I saw an interesting video once explaining that with a sasumata, the person pushing it holds a straight pole, but the end pressing against the target is forked and spread out — so it's actually easier for the person being pinned to push back
    46AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:04
If it were just 2 officers, I could see shooting her, but with about 10 people there, this isn't okay

    53AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:07
I see, so the fat insulated her from the electricity, which is why it had no effect
    54AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:12
They're taking it slow because there are so many witnesses around. Out in the countryside she'd have been beaten senseless immediately
    56AnonymousSep 1, 2026 16:13

    Exactly this

    Background and Talking Points

A Taser is a non-lethal device that fires two wire-connected probes into the body, using an electric current to temporarily paralyze the muscles — but it’s known to lose effectiveness if the probes only penetrate shallowly through clothing, or if the target pulls them out. Many U.S. police officers train under the idea that if a knife-wielding suspect closes to within a certain distance, using a firearm may become unavoidable (the so-called “21-foot rule”), and that kind of doctrine is part of why an officer opened fire even with several colleagues nearby. On the thread, users floated theories like “why did they need to shoot with so many officers there” and “maybe her larger build kept the electricity from getting through,” but a Taser’s effectiveness actually depends more on how and how many probes make contact and the target’s state of agitation than on body size alone, so it can’t simply be chalked up to her build. Many replies also brought up the shields, batons, and sasumata (pronged restraining poles) used by Japanese police, with the contrast between a gun society and a non-gun society becoming a central point of debate.

  • VIP’s Famous Regular ‘Kururi’ Hosts Q&A — 5ch Replies: ‘We Still Love You Anyway’

On News VIP, a thread went up where the famous regular poster “Byosoin Kururi” answered questions from fellow posters. In their trademark nonchalant tone, they revealed one thing after another — that their family had moved out to Tokyo, leaving them the only one still at the family home; an actual lawsuit they filed over a review posted on their shop’s review site; and that their YouTube activity is currently on hiatus. The thread also touched on their relationship with rival-ranked poster “Ruru” and banter with another regular, “Washi,” turning into less a straightforward Q&A and more a chance for everyone to enjoy Kururi’s trademark character.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

On 5ch, there’s a category of regulars known as “kotehan” — posters who keep using the same name or tripcode over a long period and build up a distinctive persona — and this “Kururi” is one of them. The family situation, lawsuit experience, and YouTube history discussed in the thread are all just self-reported claims on an anonymous message board; no real name or identity has been confirmed, and there is no way to verify whether any of it is true. A misconception readers may fall into is assuming Kururi is someone with public name recognition, like a celebrity or influencer — in reality, they’re just an anonymous regular known only within 5ch. Rather than the thread splitting into a debate, it mostly consists of users taking turns tossing out questions and everyone enjoying the back-and-forth as Kururi answers in their trademark nonchalant style.

(which runs Girls Channel), and the individual operator of “Suki Kirai .com” — as “large-scale specified telecommunications service providers” under the Act on Countermeasures against Information Distribution Platforms (formerly the Provider Liability Limitation Act). Designated operators are now required to speed up their handling of takedown requests for rights violations such as defamation, and to make their operational practices more transparent. On 5channel, reactions ranged widely — from “why is Pixiv on this list?” to comments noting that harassment of AI illustrators and disliked characters is genuinely common there, comparisons with the existing roster of designated operators, and concerns about growing government surveillance.

The designated operators are: Pixiv Inc., which runs the illustration-sharing service “Pixiv”; note Inc., which runs the media platform “note”; J Squared Inc., which runs “Girls Channel”; and an individual who operates “Suki Kirai .com” — four operators in total.

Designated operators are now obligated to take measures to speed up the removal of content that violates rights (such as online defamation) and to make their operating practices more transparent.

Background and key points of this discussion

The Act on Countermeasures against Information Distribution Platforms is an amended law enacted in 2024. Building on the former Provider Liability Limitation Act, it establishes a framework requiring operators to respond to information that violates rights, such as defamation. Operators designated as “large-scale specified telecommunications service providers” are required to build systems for faster handling of takedown requests and to publish their removal criteria and operational practices — it is not a system under which the government censors post content itself. The existing roster of designated operators already includes YouTube, X, Instagram, TikTok, Niconico Douga, and Bakusai.com; this latest round adds Pixiv, note, Girls Channel, and Suki Kirai .com. What split opinion on the thread was the tension between these platforms’ scale and real harassment problems on one hand, and on the other, a view that this looks like a targeted crackdown on spaces where people criticize the government versus a view that it’s a reasonable response to rampant abuse. What wasn’t well understood in the thread is that the designation criteria rest on objective measures like user numbers, not on arbitrarily targeting services based on their content or leanings.

  • Were There Fewer Disabled Children in the Showa Era? 5ch: “There’s Definitely More Now”

A thread titled “Were there fewer disabled children back in the Showa era?” appeared on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, drawing a flood of memories about schools and neighborhoods from that time. Posters recalled how special-needs classes handled things, alongside memories of drug-injury victims like thalidomide children and disabled war veterans, while others pointed out that the Eugenic Protection Law and the Leprosy Prevention Law both remained on the books until 1996. Opinions split between “with more women having children later in life, there’s definitely more now” and the gut feeling that “you used to see them around town more often” — leaving it unclear whether statistics or personal impressions come closer to the truth.

    4AnonymousAug 31, 2026 20:56
Because back then, if a midwife realized right at birth that the baby was disabled, she'd strangle it on the spot.
    5AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:01
If anything, you saw them around town more back in the day.
Actually, the further along we've gone, the fewer 'odd' people you see out in public.
    Where did they all go?
    6AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:02
By today's standards, Nobita (from Doraemon) would easily count as having a disability.
    7AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:02

    Re: #12
Junior high was brutally strict. Teachers slapping students was just an everyday thing. If something went wrong, the whole grade had to kneel seiza-style in the gym. You'd close your eyes, raise your hand, and just sit there shaking, listening to the sound of kids getting slapped.
    13AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:06
One time during recess, the whole class snuck off school grounds together to go look for someone.
    14AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:06
Back then they were seen as useless mouths to feed, but in a wealthy democratic welfare society it gets reframed as 'individuality.' Though if things get poor and tight again, we'll probably slide right back.
    19AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:10
My elementary school had a special-needs class, and we shared just the music class with them. There was an intellectually disabled girl, and the same girl from our class would walk her to and from class every time, so there wasn't really any bullying.
    21AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:11
It's just that the internet is loud about it now — there were way more of them back in the day. Most of them probably just… died, I guess.

    28AnonymousAug 31, 2026 21:15

It goes back to the Eugenic Protection Law. It wasn't until 1996 that it was finally recognized as discrimination against the disabled and revised into the Maternal Body Protection Law — the Health Minister overseeing that was Naoto Kan. While he was getting mocked for that radish-sprout-eating publicity stunt, he was also doing important work.

    Re: #53
Yeah, exactly. Even versions with a slightly different structure that were supposed to be safe apparently still change once inside the body, so in practice it's still treated as an absolute no-go for pregnant women.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Eugenic Protection Law took effect in 1948, legalizing forced sterilization and abortion on the grounds of disability, and it remained in force until it was revised into the Maternal Body Protection Law in 1996. That same year also saw the abolition of the Leprosy Prevention Law, which had been used to isolate patients with Hansen’s disease — meaning the systems mentioned in this thread all persisted into relatively recent times. The sense that “there were fewer disabled children in the Showa era” is tangled up with several factors, including differences in neonatal medicine and the way special-needs education infrastructure gradually developed after schools for children with disabilities became mandatory in 1979. It likely has less to do with an actual change in numbers than with a shift in how visible disability was. It’s worth noting that while the rise in later-in-life pregnancies is a known factor that raises the risk of chromosomal abnormalities, that alone doesn’t make for a simple apples-to-apples comparison with the Showa era.

    Background and Points of Discussion

J.P ROOM is Hello! Project’s official fan club, and the Fan Festival is an annual event for members. The shuffle unit is a recurring feature that pairs members into ad hoc units across group lines, and unexpected combinations tend to draw fan interest. Country Musume., mentioned repeatedly in the thread, is a group that has already disbanded, and the underlying context is how current members carry on singing its songs. The thread’s mixed reactions came from a gap in temperature between excitement over the lottery format itself and a sense of déjà vu, as in comments like “they’ve basically already done this at M-Spe (Hello! Project’s regular live show).” Note that posts speculating about members’ future activity schedules go beyond what’s been confirmed in official announcements, so this article does not cover them.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Even now, more than a decade after the nuclear disaster, Fukushima University remains in a position where it has little choice but to stay sensitive about its students being linked to the keyword “nuclear power plant.” What stands out about this video is that the university officially objected to remarks suggesting they didn’t want students touching on the nuclear plant topic, calling them “lacking in consideration” — this wasn’t simply a protest against a tasteless joke, but touched on context the region and the university have carried for years, which is what fueled the backlash. On the thread, opinions split between defenders who framed it as “entertainment built around a foul-mouthed persona” and critics who saw it as “hurting a real university and its students for money,” while a parallel debate flared up over the cast member’s actual education level (Kyoto University dropout, technically a high school graduate). Posts comparing this to other real-life streamers’ behavior also appeared, but any that couldn’t be verified have been left out of this article.

  • A Year After the Breakup, Still Not Over Her — 5ch: “It’s Been a Year and I’m Still a Wreck”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s Nanjyo (“Live Newsflash”) board started by a man posting, “My girlfriend dumped me and I’m so sad 😭.” Reading closely, though, it turns out the breakup actually happened a year ago, and the poster still can’t get over her. Commenters offered the standard advice that “you’ll forget her once you get a new girlfriend,” but the poster kept insisting he “can’t move on to a new relationship because he can’t forget his ex.” The thread grew into a wider debate over whether men and women recover from breakups differently.

    Background and Talking Points

First-person confession threads that open with “I did such-and-such” are a familiar format on Nanjyo-style boards, and it’s worth noting there’s no way to verify whether the poster is describing a genuine personal experience. This thread, too, opens simply with “my girlfriend dumped me,” but following the replies reveals that a full year had actually passed since the breakup. Several comments echo the idea that “men cling to lingering feelings while women move on quickly” — a popular claim online, though not one backed by any actual statistics. It’s also typical of this kind of thread that practical advice like “just chase your libido and move on” or “there are plenty of replacements out there” never quite lines up with the poster’s emotional pushback — that mismatch itself, more than any real empathy, is what makes the exchange worth reading.

  • VIVANT Season 2 Divides Fans: Questions Swirl Over AI Character and Sakai Masato’s Triple Role

A 5channel thread discussing Season 2 of the TBS drama “VIVANT,” the sequel currently airing, has been split between praise and criticism. The main flashpoint is the show’s AI character, with critics calling its emotional expressions “off-putting” and dismissing it as “just a prop to get viewers theorizing,” while defenders argue it would actually be more unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI at all. Opinions also diverged over Sakai Masato taking on three roles and the drama’s long two-cour (roughly six-month) run, with the thread split between viewers wanting something simple and easy to follow and those who enjoy a show built for deep analysis.

Why are Japanese people always glued to the TV anyway?
    13AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:42
Because it's a two-cour show (roughly six months), the pacing feels way too stretched out.
Still three months to go, so I bet the Hanshin Tigers stuff (the baseball team) is just the opening act.
    14AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:42
Where does this mindset even come from — saying you hate it and it's boring, but still watching every week?
    15AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:43
If they're going to air garbage like this, they might as well just rerun JIN instead (a beloved earlier TBS drama).

There are bits here and there where I can't make out what they're saying.
    18AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:43
It's a "social phenomenon" drama, so watching it is basically mandatory, I guess.
    19AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:43
The AI is genuinely unpleasant to watch.
Honestly, it would've been way better if Nogi just steamrolled everything and figured out the answers himself, like an overpowered hero in one of those "naro-kei" web-novel power-fantasy shows.

Background and Key Points of Debate

VIVANT was a massive hit TBS drama starring Sakai Masato in 2023, and Season 2 began airing to high anticipation as its sequel. The thread’s disagreement broke down into two main points. The first is whether the AI character works: defenders argued it would be unnatural for a modern intelligence agency not to use AI, while detractors pushed back that its emotional expressions are unpleasant and that it’s little more than a prop to fuel viewer theorizing. The second is a broader backlash against “theorizing culture” itself, with many expressing fatigue at shows built around social-media puzzle-solving contests. Commenters also flagged Sakai Masato’s triple role, the drama’s long two-cour (six-month) run, and the limited screen time given to popular actors like Matsuzaka Tori. Posts also noted that the broadcast runs through around January of next year, with a feature film reportedly also in the works, underscoring the scale of the franchise. Some posts in the thread also mocked cast members’ appearances or personal lives, but those have been excluded here since they can’t be verified as fact.

  • GPU Prices Keep Climbing — 5ch: “Don’t Trust the Bad-Timing Guy”

A thread that started from the classic nanJ joke — every time someone says “I want a PC,” someone replies “the timing’s bad” — before turning into a real discussion about GPU prices. Some users say the RTX 5070 Ti has gone from ¥150,000 to over ¥200,000, while others report buying one for ¥80,000–¥100,000-something, highlighting just how much price varies depending on when you bought. The talk also turned to people who built new PCs to play Monster Hunter Wilds at launch — at the time they were mocked for “wasting money on a trash game,” but in hindsight many say the timing worked out great. Posters also pointed to AI-driven demand pushing up parts prices and the used market collapsing after Windows 10 support ended, with opinions split on whether prices will come back down.

Isn't it like a million yen or something? 🙄

    Re: #47
You can resell it for what you paid, so it's fine.
    63AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:54
Seriously, is AI just squeezing humanity dry at this point?
    This is basically Skynet already.

    Re: #63
    AI is a bubble.
    It'll pop eventually.
But consumer product manufacturing has already shrunk, so even after it pops, prices will probably only dip slightly and stay high.
    65AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:56
So the lesson is: never trust the bad-timing guy.

    Re: #65
There were plenty of "the timing's great, buy now" guys around this time last year too.
    70AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:59
My history as a bad-timing guy:
    Core 2 Duo E6600 → i7 2600K → now Ryzen 5 3600 / RX 3060 12GB / 32GB DDR4
I have a bad feeling there won't be a "next" upgrade, and it's terrifying.

    Just get a 5700X already.
    77AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:02
Fine, you upgraded for Wilds, but people were saying all kinds of things about how demanding that game is — is it actually okay?

    Re: #77
Yeah, people said the better your specs, the more it tries to needlessly push your hardware.
    78AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:04
"I bought mine for X0,000 yen last year, was that the right call?"

PC threads are full of these self-narrating posts. Why is that?

Because there's nothing else to talk about.
    86AnonymousSep 1, 2026 12:15
There seem to be a lot of PC experts here, so let me ask — is it okay to buy this PC?
I just need it to run Word and Excel for now.

    The price is ¥17,500.

My PC eats up about 4.5GB of RAM just from booting up, so that might not cut it…

That CPU isn't even officially supported for Windows 11 — it's been forced on there — so there's no guarantee it'll keep getting updates.

Once you get into video generation, things start getting rough.

It used to be "load up on more RAM than you need, just in case," but now it's at the point where there's no such thing as too much 🙄

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The continued rise in GPU prices stems from a semiconductor and memory crunch driven by surging demand for generative AI. Posters in the thread floated theories like “AI companies have bought up huge numbers of Macs for AI use” and “AI is a bubble, but since production itself has already shrunk, prices will stay high even after it pops” — opinions were split between optimism and pessimism about a future price drop. Windows 10 support also ended in October 2025, and the thread’s comment that “the dirt-cheap used PCs disappeared once Win10 support ended” reflects that. The bottom falling out of the used market is one reason people keep saying “the timing is bad” right now. One thing readers might easily misread is that this talk of prices and shortages is based on individual anecdotes and gut feelings about the market, not official statistics. Still, the recurring story that “people who bought PCs for the Monster Hunter Wilds launch ended up coming out ahead” keeps getting repeated as a reminder that waiting longer doesn’t always pay off — making it a nice provocation for the ongoing debate about when to buy a PC.
