  • Fukushima University Files Official Protest, Mayor Weighs In — 5ch: “That’s Basically a Surrender Statement and an Apology, LOL”

A video mocking Fukushima University, posted by wakatte.tv, has snowballed into a full-blown controversy: the university issued an official protest statement, and even the mayor of Fukushima City felt compelled to comment on the matter urgently. The video appears to have since been taken down, and the poster has put out wording that reads like an apology. On 5ch, opinions split between defending and slamming the video’s intent, with heated debate over the background of the person behind it (a Kyoto University dropout) — and some users questioning why the whole thing blew up this big in the first place.

He had the talent to build Takeda Juku (a major cram-school chain), and he'd probably do fine even without YouTube.

Takeda Juku's kind of iffy as an actual cram school, but as a money-making system it's genuinely groundbreaking.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The backdrop here is a now well-established genre of YouTube content — epitomized by wakatte.tv — that mocks and ranks universities for entertainment. The spark this time was where to draw the line between provocation-as-entertainment and outright insult toward a real university and its researchers. Some in the thread called for action under Japan’s defamation or insult statutes, but these are offenses that require the victim to file a formal complaint before prosecution can even begin — a nuance the thread doesn’t dig into much. The educational background of the person behind the video (a Kyoto University dropout) also came up again and again, even though the fact that he dropped out is really a separate issue from whether the video’s content was appropriate — in effect, judgment of the video itself ended up getting swapped out for a debate over educational pedigree. And even though the video has already been taken down and language resembling an apology has surfaced, some are still asking “why does the backlash keep going?” — likely because no concrete explanation of the original intent behind the mockery has been offered yet.

  • Welfare Recipient Blows ¥20,000 at Pachi-Slot on Payment Day — 5ch: ‘Get Your Life Together’

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board (なんでも実況G) started by an original poster (OP) who admitted to losing ¥20,000 playing pachi-slot on the very day their welfare payment came in. According to OP, the money had only just been deposited that day, with several more days to go before the next payment. The thread filled with voices scolding OP to “live a bit more responsibly,” while others questioned the system itself, asking “if you can afford to gamble, do you even need welfare?” OP, for their part, said “pachi-slot is my only reason to live” and “I want to win it back,” and also revealed they suffer from depression and a developmental disorder. The thread turned into a back-and-forth of defense and criticism, fueled by differing payment dates and disagreement over how welfare money should be spent.

It was the 'Utawarerumono' machine, so that was pre-read heat (sakiyomi-netsu), not an early tell (sakibare).

Unlike other SANKYO cabinets, that machine can't combine pre-read heat with an early tell, and the early tell's reliability is under 40%, so a lot of players just ignore it.

They wait outside the ward office before it opens, and the second the doors open they're screaming abuse demanding their money.

    128AnonymousSep 2, 2026 00:58
    Re: #121
I'm not young anymore, and I have depression and a developmental disorder

    Background and Talking Points

Welfare payment dates vary by municipality, and thread replies were split between the 3rd, the 5th, the start of the month, and the 15th of even-numbered months (some commenters even confused the 15th-of-the-month payout with pension day). Under Japan’s Public Assistance Act, there’s no rule restricting how recipients spend their benefits once paid, so spending it on pachinko or slots isn’t illegal in itself. That’s fueled a recurring clash between critics who argue “if you can afford to gamble, you don’t need welfare” and those who say how the money is spent is a matter of personal freedom — and this thread is just the latest replay of that argument. OP’s disclosure of depression and a developmental disorder hints at the harder realities facing recipients who struggle to work, but overall the thread leaned more toward self-deprecating jokes and banter than serious debate.

*This article is compiled and summarized from the 5ch (Anything Goes Live board) thread “I’m on welfare, and since today was payment day I went to the pachi-slot parlor and lost 20k.”

  • Turns out the Chiikawa fandom has its own ‘popular members,’ ‘unpopular members,’ obsessive stans, and haters too…

A Chiikawa-related thread lit up with posts describing which characters are popular and unpopular using terms borrowed straight from Hello! Project idol fandom — ‘popular members,’ ‘unpopular members,’ ‘gachikoi’ (die-hard, deeply-in-love stans), and ‘antis’ (haters). It kicked off with an image of a customer poll held at the Lashinban store in Shinjuku, where Usagi came out on top, surprising a lot of posters. Meanwhile Rakko-sensei got called out as unpopular, with people unsure whether it’s ‘the looks or the personality.’ Some also questioned why Momonga, despite having a similar look, is so much more popular.

    The blue one is Hachiware.

    Background and Key Points

Chiikawa is a manga by creator Nagano that started on social media, known for pairing an adorable art style with recurring, brutal plot elements like being ‘hunted’ and ‘twisted apart.’ The thread was sparked by an image of a customer poll held at the Lashinban store in Shinjuku, where Usagi placed first — prompting surprised replies like ‘I thought Hachiware was number one.’ The second half of the thread turns into a very Hello! Project-board style game, with posters borrowing Hello! Project fan terminology and member names to describe the characters’ personalities. Worth noting: the reasoning behind who counts as a ‘popular member’ or ‘unpopular member’ isn’t official — it’s purely posters’ personal opinion — and some replies are hard to follow unless you’re familiar with both Chiikawa and Hello! Project fandom context.

  • First-Date Etiquette: 5ch Says “Check Your Nails and Nose Hair”

On 5ch’s “Anything Goes Live” board, a poster with a first date scheduled for the next day started a thread asking what they should watch out for. Replies poured in with concrete advice, ranging from grooming details like nails, nose hair, and arm hair, to how to pick a meeting spot, to the rule of thumb that a first date should wrap up early. Opinions on smoking, though, split right down the middle — some argued it’s attractive, others warned it’s a turn-off nowadays — and someone even suggested just asking an AI, leaving the thread without a clear consensus.

I bought new clothes, and I'll check my nails and nose hair like you said.
I'm also thinking I should shave the hair on my arms and fingers, just in case.
I'll be extra careful drawing my eyebrows in too, more than usual.

I really wanted to get my hair done as well, but I'm in the middle of growing it out right now, so I'll just style it to cover that up.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Advice emphasizing grooming details like “nails,” “nose hair,” and “body hair,” as seen in this thread, is a standard response in 5ch relationship-advice threads, reflecting a mindset that treats a sense of cleanliness as the key measure of a first impression. Opinions on smoking split sharply between “it’s attractive” and “it’s a turn-off nowadays,” a divide that reflects declining smoking rates and shifting attitudes toward secondhand smoke, and is a topic where views tend to differ by generation. While the thread produced concrete advice on how to choose a meeting spot and the rule of thumb to end a first date early, it’s worth noting that some points that commonly come up in real first-date advice — like how to handle the bill or what to talk about — weren’t addressed here.

  • Former Morning Musume Member & TV Tokyo Announcer Rio Kitagawa’s “Got My Job Offer 2 Years Ago” Post Sparks Speculation Over Her Graduation Timing

Rio Kitagawa, a former member of the idol group Morning Musume who now works as an announcer at TV Tokyo, sparked discussion on 5ch (a major Japanese anonymous forum, formerly 2channel) after posting on the station’s official Instagram: “Before I knew it, it’s almost been 2 years…!! This is a memory photo from the day I got my job offer (naitei — the formal, pre-graduation job acceptance notice common in Japanese hiring).” Kitagawa left the idol group and transitioned into a TV announcer career following a scandal involving leaked information about her dating life and private life. In the thread, opinions split over how the timing of her job offer relates to the circumstances of her idol “graduation” (sotsugyou — the standard term idols use for leaving a group), and whether the timing of her departure had actually been decided long in advance.

    1AnonymousSep 1, 2026 21:05

was that whole leaked-photo scandal actually a script written by the agency and Kitagawa herself?

    Re: #108
Sounds like you still think announcer Kitagawa is being frozen out

Background and key points of the debate

Announcer hiring at Japanese TV stations generally follows the “shinsotsu ikkatsu saiyo” system — simultaneous, single-batch recruiting of new university graduates — in which job offers go out in the fall of a student’s third year, while the actual start date isn’t until the following spring, roughly a year and a half to two years later. A gap of that length between offer and start date is nothing unusual. Read one way, Kitagawa’s post is simply her reflecting on that ordinary hiring timeline. But because the timing overlaps with when she left Morning Musume (amid the scandal over leaked information about her dating life and private life), the thread filled with speculation that her graduation from the group may have already been decided before the job offer even came through. It’s worth stressing this isn’t an officially confirmed fact — it’s speculation built entirely on a coincidence in timing. Several posts also flatly asserted the hiring was secured through “connections” (kone), but since no evidence was given for that claim, those posts have been excluded from this article.

  • Showa-Era Company Trip Photo Sparks ‘AI or Real?’ Debate on 5ch: “Their Teeth Are Too Perfect”

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (Anything Live Broadcast) board, an image purportedly showing a company trip from the Showa era became a hot topic. Some users suspected it was AI-generated, citing the uniformly straight teeth and unnaturally high image quality, while others pushed back, pointing to the quirks of disposable cameras from the era — like the “Utsurun-desu” — arguing “even a real photo would look like this.” The debate over authenticity dragged on, alongside a split reaction to the era’s company culture — mandatory trips on days off, drinking, and smoking treated as normal — with some calling it “hell” and others saying “I’m jealous.”

    Context and Key Talking Points

The “Utsurun-desu” was a disposable camera Fujifilm released in 1986; given the lens and flash performance of the time, image quality tended to get grainy in backlit or dimly-lit banquet halls. On the thread, discussion spread around trying to judge authenticity based on signs said to be typical of generative AI — “the teeth are too evenly aligned,” “no garbled text” — while counterarguments pointed out that the film itself had high resolution and that the roughness was really a print-quality issue. The custom of company trips became established as a flagship employee benefit from the postwar economic boom through the bubble era, but has since scaled back alongside work-style reforms and a growing emphasis on respecting personal time off. The thread’s energy was driven less by the question of whether the image was real and more by astonishment at the sheer amount of unpaid company time it depicted — something unthinkable today.

  • Sakura Ishiyama’s Whole Sweet Potato Turns Her Pork Soup Ultra-Sweet — 5ch: ‘Wife Material Confirmed’

Idol group Juice=Juice member Sakura Ishiyama reported on the group’s official blog that after tossing one whole sweet potato into her tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup), it came out sweeter than she expected. When the post got reposted to 5ch’s Hello! Project board, the discussion drifted away from the food itself and into whether someone living alone would really bother making a labor-intensive dish like tonjiru. The thread also dug up her habitual anecdotes — like buying huge amounts of sliced bread or a three-seater sofa — with many commenters praising her homemaker-like personality.

Q5. What's something you always end up buying at the convenience store?

Sakura Ishiyama: Fried chicken and Jiro-style ramen

    Background and Points of Debate

Sakura Ishiyama is a member of Juice=Juice who shares updates on her daily life through the group’s official Ameblo blog. This post was originally just a lighthearted account of a cooking mishap — not measuring the sweet potato properly — but on the 5ch thread, the discussion moved past the food itself into a broader debate about lifestyle: whether someone living alone would really bother making something as involved as tonjiru. Opinions split between those who see tonjiru as a laborious dish and those who consider it a basic recipe taught in home economics class. The thread also revisited older anecdotes — like her buying huge quantities of sliced bread or a three-seater sofa — sparking speculation about her private life. It’s worth noting this speculation comes entirely from 5ch users and has not been confirmed as fact by Ishiyama herself or her agency.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “Sakura Ishiyama: ‘I made tonjiru, and since I had a sweet potato I figured the more the merrier! So I put in a whole one, and it came out sweet’.”

  • Can imitation games ever surpass the original? 5ch: ‘Genshin Impact has completely surpassed Breath of the Wild’

On 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G (a general live-discussion board), posters debated whether games seen as copying an original can ever actually surpass it. The thread ran through specific comparisons one after another — Genshin Impact vs. Breath of the Wild, Minecraft vs. Terraria, Palworld vs. Pokémon — and opinion split between those who felt that even when a follow-up adds convenience and polish, “something’s just off,” and those who rated the newcomer highly, as in “Genshin Impact has completely surpassed Breath of the Wild.” On PUBG, posters noted that its developer originally got his start as a mod-maker for H1Z1, pointing out that not every case is a simple rip-off.

    1AnonymousSep 1, 2026 22:14
The follow-ups always bolt on a bunch of unnecessary junk and turn it into some watered-down, hyper-casual version.
For open-world fantasy, Breath of the Wild is still the most fun,
and for battle royale, PUBG is still the most fun.

I think Just Cause 3 has way more freedom in its physics than Breath of the Wild
You can grapple all sorts of things together with the wire
and chaining parachute → wire → parachute for high-speed travel feels amazing.

Background and key points of this discussion

Palworld, the example that came up repeatedly in the thread, was sued for patent infringement by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company in September 2024 — a point that’s easy to misread, since it isn’t a copyright suit directly litigating “copying.” PUBG, too, has a history that’s hard to call simple imitation: its developer, Brendan Greene, was brought onto H1Z1 on the strength of his track record as a mod-maker. As for Breath of the Wild, posters in the thread pointed out that elements like wall-climbing and paraglider-gliding follow conventions already established by open-world titles such as Assassin’s Creed, raising the question of how much can really be called “original invention.” The line for what counts as a game “ripping off” another isn’t simple to draw, and evaluations often shift depending on which title — the original or the follow-up — a player happened to experience first. That, in essence, is the core of this debate.

  • Yaris Cross: “This Is Exactly What We Need” — 5ch Car Fans Debate the SUV Craze

On a 5ch thread, Toyota’s Yaris Cross became the poster child for the phrase “this is exactly what we need” (a common expression of approval for something sensible and unpretentious). It started with a post wishing for a cheap, non-SUV compact car built on the Yaris Cross’s body. From there, commenters cited the Honda Fit’s hybrid (e:HEV) and the commercial-use Probox as ideal examples. The discussion eventually expanded into a broader debate over SUV popularity itself, pitting jabs at consumers who spend more on looks and specs than practicality against those who argued car choice is a matter of personal freedom.

This is exactly what we need
    7AnonymousSep 1, 2026 20:54
Just reuse the Yaris Cross's shell for a non-SUV
compact car and sell it cheap
The plain Yaris has way too little interior room, can't use it as a family car
Or the Yaris Cross, needlessly expensive with pricey tire changes too?
The Yaris and Aqua lean too stylish and end up cramped
Why can't they just make a compact car that's just right
Put a Toyota hybrid in the Fit's cabin space

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Yaris Cross is a subcompact SUV based on the new-generation Yaris, and since its domestic launch it has been a driving force behind Japan’s compact SUV boom. What split the thread was how to interpret the substance of SUV demand. While some voices supported SUVs despite their usual practicality and cost drawbacks, there was also plenty of pointed sarcasm aimed at consumers who spend money on gear and specs they never actually use. On the question of what an ideal compact car should look like, several commenters pointed to the Honda Fit’s hybrid, sparking discussion of how it stacks up against Toyota’s own hybrid lineup. Others noted that European markets favor design-forward styling over pure practicality, highlighting how expectations for cars differ between Japan and overseas markets — a divide underlying much of this debate.

In 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G forum, an anonymous user in their 20s living on welfare started a thread titled “Ask me anything” and answered questions from other posters. The original poster explained that they hold a certificate for a developmental disorder and receive about ¥160,000 a month, but disagreement broke out over that figure and whether a “disability supplement” even exists, with replies like “there’s no such supplement” and “there’s no way you’d get ¥160,000” clashing with the poster’s account. The conversation also branched into topics like renting an apartment, getting student loan repayments waived, and views on dating and marriage, making for a candid exchange.

You can get it — in fact, being on welfare is even listed by some institutions as one valid reason for a loan repayment deferral
Though in my case, I got a repayment exemption due to mental illness

How severe do you need to be to get a disability certificate?

I got an inheritance and live off investing

    Yeah
There's an income deduction built in too

How'd you manage to rent an apartment?

    Re: #36
There are landlords that accept welfare recipients, so it's doable
    43AnonymousSep 1, 2026 19:46
I'm in my 20s too, and my welfare got approved last week. The ward office and caseworker were surprisingly nice about it — no gatekeeping, my application just sailed through. You've got student loans too, so I feel a connection with you.

I sleep 10 hours a day, binge games, read, work out, sometimes get laser hair removal — basically improve myself while running my social media, and every now and then dip into dating or take a trip abroad

Plenty of women these days say they don't even want kids

Background and Key Points on This Topic

Japan’s welfare system does in fact include a “disability supplement,” which adds to the minimum cost-of-living benefit based on the recipient’s physical, intellectual, or mental disability grade and the cost-of-living tier of their region. One reply in the thread flatly claimed “no such supplement exists,” but this likely overlooks differences in individual disability grades and municipal administration — the original poster’s explanation is actually closer to how the system officially works. Separately, scholarship loans from the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) do have provisions for repayment exemption due to mental illness and other conditions, as well as repayment deferral while receiving welfare, so the poster’s claim of having their loan repayment exempted is plausible if they met the conditions. That said, both the qualifying criteria and the amounts involved vary by individual circumstance, so the figures in this thread shouldn’t be generalized. A common misconception among readers is treating welfare as a flat, uniform amount — in reality, the benefit varies significantly based on household composition, region, and disability grade.
