  • 30s Unmarried Rate: Nearly Half of Men Still Single — 5ch Floats a ‘Singles Tax’

A thread introducing data on unmarried rates among people in their 30s appeared on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board. The numbers showed 47.3% of men and 34.5% of women aged 30-34 unmarried, and 35.6% of men and 23.1% of women aged 35-39 unmarried, sparking comments like “everyone around me is married, this doesn’t match my experience,” calls for a “singles tax” or “childless tax” to ease the burden on households, and pushback from others branding married people the “losers” instead. The thread also cited reports that the unmarried rate among people in their 30s in Seoul, South Korea, has topped 60%, extending the discussion to how the trend isn’t unique to Japan.

For the older, larger generations, having 3 or more kids was the norm, yet the number has gradually slipped below 2 — isn't that proof plenty of recent couples are only having one?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The rising unmarried rate is a statistic that keeps resurfacing in Japan’s debates over its declining birthrate, and the figures cited in the thread are roughly in line with the government’s official population statistics. The “singles tax” and “childless tax” floated in the thread are not policies actually under consideration — they’re hypothetical funding proposals that often get raised on forums, and it’s worth noting they are not government policy. It’s also easy to conflate the claim that “the birth rate among married couples is close to 2.0” with Japan’s overall total fertility rate (around 1.2) — the former applies only to couples who are already married and is a separate metric. The thread also cited reporting that the unmarried rate among people in their 30s in Seoul, South Korea, has passed 60%, fueling discussion of how the falling birthrate and rising unmarried rate aren’t unique to Japan.

  • Angerme’s Hana Goto Sparks Buzz Over Her Looks on TV — 5ch Asks “Who Is This Beauty?”

Hana Goto (Angerme) sparked buzz on social media after appearing on a terrestrial TV program, with 5ch’s Hello! Project thread flooding with comments calling her “too cute.” Some posters lamented that she looked better before changing her bangs, or wished she’d been given more TV exposure back at her peak last year, while others argued her current look is plenty appealing on its own — opinions were split. The discussion also branched into comparisons with fellow members Nina Ebata, Moe Jokoryo, and Nanami Kubota, along with debate over the relationship between terrestrial TV appearances and social media popularity.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Opportunities for Hello! Project members to appear on terrestrial variety shows are limited relative to the group’s overall activity level, so whether a member lands such exposure often gets discussed in relation to their social media reach and popularity. In this thread too, Hana Goto’s TV appearance split opinion — some said she looked more appealing before changing her bangs, while others said her current style holds up just fine. There was also a view shared in the thread — as in the post saying “the era when unpopular members with no social media numbers could get pushed onto TV is over” — that treats TV appearances as proof of ability or popularity. It’s worth noting that these comparisons and evaluations are based purely on the impressions and preferences of 5ch users, and don’t necessarily reflect the member’s actual career achievements or the content of the program itself.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Hana Goto’s looks on terrestrial TV are too cute!!.”

  • Miku Nishizaki announces her first photobook: “It took time because I kept being seen in ways I didn’t want”

On September 18, 2026, Miku Nishizaki of Ocha Norma, Hello! Project’s new group, announced on her blog that she will release her first photobook. In her statement, she revealed that “the release took time because there were repeated instances of being seen in ways I didn’t want,” and looked back on how her mother’s encouragement helped her finally take the plunge. In response to this confession, Hello! Project’s board on 5ch saw comments expressing gratitude toward her mother and praise for her resolve, while opinions were divided over the propriety of swimsuit shots and the reality of the callous comments idols receive.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

In Hello! Project-affiliated groups, photobooks and gravure work are often treated as a stepping stone to gaining popularity, but comment sections on social media and video platforms tend to fill up with posts that reduce members to their looks, and there have repeatedly been cases where this places a real psychological burden on the person involved. In this thread too, opinions split along different lines — over whether releasing a photobook that includes swimsuit shots is acceptable at all, and over how far being an idol can be separated from being subjected to a sexual gaze — and no single consensus emerged. Many young idols in other groups also continue their careers with their mothers’ support, making this case a fairly typical example of the balancing act between entertainment work and a person’s own will. Note that in compiling this article, posts that directly mock her appearance, contain sexual language, or amount to unrelated slander have been excluded.

  • Kohaku Lineup Prediction Thread Splits Over Whether Juice=Juice Performs Solo or as Part of the Full Hello! Project

A thread predicting the lineup for the 77th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen (the network’s annual New Year’s Eve song battle) lit up the Hello! Project subforum. The sticking point: will Juice=Juice perform solo, or will the whole Hello! Project roster go on together? The latter option drew a string of objections like “it’ll wreck the pecking order” and “that’s just a hassle for everyone.” Posters also traded comparisons of attendance figures, streaming numbers, and Google Trends data against other groups like =LOVE, Nogizaka46, FRUITS ZIPPER, CUTIE STREET, and ILLIT, with predictions all over the map as to who actually lands a slot.

=LOVE had a massive viral hit with "Toku Bechu Shite" back in February last year, and it's still sitting in the Apple Music Top 100.
It also charted on this year's first-half overall karaoke chart.
For reference: 2.3 billion TikTok views, 200 million streams.
Even without a new song going viral, they still climbed as high as #5 on Apple Music.
They've also charted on Spotify's Top 50 and TikTok's music viral chart.

    Background and Talking Points

NHK’s Kohaku Uta Gassen is said to pick its performers based on a mix of CD sales, streaming numbers, and social media buzz, but the network has never published concrete selection criteria. As a result, it’s become an annual tradition for fans to predict who’s “in” or “out” using fragmentary data points like Google Trends search volume, attendance figures, and streaming numbers. In this thread, opinions were split over how Juice=Juice would appear (solo or as part of the full Hello! Project lineup), and there was also lively comparison with non-“Sakamichi” groups like =LOVE, Nogizaka46, and FRUITS ZIPPER. It’s worth noting, though, that these metric comparisons are purely fan speculation, not criteria NHK has officially confirmed using — a point readers can easily misread.

  • Raising an Autistic Child Is Harder Than You’d Think — 5ch Thread: ‘I’m Autistic Myself, But I Managed to Become Independent’

A thread about raising an autistic child, posted on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, drew a wave of responses. Unlike Down syndrome, which can be identified through prenatal testing, autism usually isn’t suspected until around age 2-3, prompted by an infant health checkup, with a confirmed diagnosis often not reached until around age 5. The thread mixed perspectives from both parents and autistic posters themselves — covering how it feels to go through that diagnostic window, whether a child can manage in mainstream classrooms, and even a firsthand account of independence from a poster who says they’re autistic. Many voiced anxiety about the future, and while all kinds of personal experiences were shared, no clear consensus emerged.

    Re: #106
That checkup isn't all that reliable, though.
Plenty of kids get flagged and turn out totally fine.
Especially compared to the 3-year-old checkup, where the real screening starts.

Background and key points of this discussion

Unlike Down syndrome, a chromosomal condition identifiable through prenatal testing, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) generally can’t be spotted by appearance. Suspicion typically arises around age 2-3 following an infant health checkup, and after repeated behavioral observation, a confirmed diagnosis is often not reached until around age 5. The mismatched sense of “when diagnosis happens” among posters in the thread likely came from conflating being flagged as “possibly at risk” at the 1.5-year checkup with an eventual confirmed diagnosis. Autism is also a “spectrum” condition with a huge range in severity and traits — some people get through mainstream schooling without any trouble, while others need lifelong support. The account from the poster who revealed they’re autistic themselves, describing how they became independent, illustrates just how varied these outcomes can be. While the thread surfaced plenty of anxiety about the future and about coping in mainstream classrooms, no clear consensus emerged.

  • 8 Years of ‘Park Drinking’: 5ch Thread Admits ‘Even Had a Stalker Show Up Once’

A thread titled “Drinking again tonight~” popped up on 5ch (Nijisoku VIP), sparking a live play-by-play of someone’s evening drinks that ran deep into the night. The thread’s creator, sipping whiskey and lemon sours at home, revealed they’ve also been quietly keeping up a solo drinking ritual at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya — “park drinking” — for about 8 years. During the stretch when they posted daily, a crew of regulars formed, but six years back, a stalker reportedly showed up too. Other posters chimed in with their own snacks and drinks, and the thread turned into a rambling, good-natured booze chat.

    Background and Talking Points

On Nijisoku VIP, “drinking threads” pop up now and then, where someone live-posts while drinking and other users jump in. This time, the thread’s creator claims that on top of drinking at home in the evenings, they’ve kept up a solo-drinking habit at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya for close to 8 years. During the period when they posted threads daily, a group of regulars formed, but they also revealed that stalkers and people looking to hook up have shown up as well. Drinking in parks itself isn’t banned under most municipal ordinances, but keeping it up over the long term does carry some safety risks worth keeping in mind. It’s also worth noting that everything in the thread is just self-reported on an anonymous message board — there’s no way to verify the actual details, frequency, or past incidents at Tsurumai Park beyond the poster’s own claims.

  • Annual Silver Week Anime Song Livestream Thread Returns to 5ch — “The Memorial Book Was Twice as Big as I Imagined”

A thread titled “Let’s Listen to Anime Songs,” now a Silver Week tradition on 5ch’s News VIP board, has popped up again. Volunteers run an external stream of anime theme songs while participants hype it up in real time with AA (ASCII art) and call-and-response comments. Tracks from Love Live!, Shanimuni, and Taisho Baseball Girls got everyone fired up, while some posters weighed in on their progress collecting drink-lottery prizes from the anime Teekyuu and praised its production values. One poster even reported being stunned by how thick the memorial-book merchandise turned out to be, making for the kind of laid-back excitement only a long holiday weekend can bring.

If you’d like to stream, head over to the refuge thread — they might work something out with you. Mirror volunteers are always welcome too.

Whether you can make requests depends on the streamer.

Non-anime songs sometimes slip in, but the main focus is anime songs. Please keep things restrained and tolerant on both sides.

    Background and Talking Points

The “Let’s Listen to Anime Songs” thread is a recurring event that started on 5ch’s VIP board, where users livestream commentary in sync with an externally run anime-music stream, popping up every long holiday — Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week, and so on. Song requests are left to the streamer’s discretion, and the customary etiquette is for participants to react to OPs and character songs with AA and “it’s here!” callouts. In this particular thread, the chatter went beyond just the song selection, touching on progress collecting drink-lottery prizes tied to the anime Teekyuu, its production quality, and the surprising thickness of a voice-actor memorial book. Since it’s a one-off livestream thread, little is known about who exactly is posting, but it offers a glimpse of the “bonding through music” fan culture that resurfaces every long holiday.

  • Speculation Mounts Over New Setting for Kotori — Love Live’s New Direction Splits Fans

On 5ch’s Love Live! board, speculation was buzzing over the true identity of “Chun-sensei,” a character believed to resemble Minami Kotori, the face of the original series. A post on X sparked rumors that she’d appear in a new storyline as a grown-up version of herself, and the thread quickly filled with guesses that she might now be married or even have kids. Complaints about recycling characters from past works collided with laments over the series’ lack of fresh content, exposing the gap in temperature between longtime hardcore fans and those simply enjoying things as they are now.

At this point can we just call "Ikizura" (a mocking nickname fans use for the franchise) the legitimate 4th-generation heir already?

This franchise clearly has no idea what it even wants to do going forward.

    10AnonymousSep 18, 2026 16:46

I just can't vibe with Kimino (the series' scenario writer) at all.
Anime is the medium that made this franchise popular in the first place — I wish they'd treat the characters with a bit more respect.
Ikizura's writing is basically the creepy "auntie texting style" (a meme term for gushing, emoji-heavy phrasing) that shows up 80% of the time in Chiikawa's reply sections.

I wonder how that guy who kept insisting the "water anime" (i.e. Aqours, whose name comes from "aqua") should be folded into GOD's continuity is doing these days.

They're being coy and calling it "idols from their hometown" instead of naming Aqours outright, but if he finds out it's continuing in some altered form, he'll probably lose it even harder.

    Yeah, fair, that's true.
Curious how the ones going on about "the purists" will react.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Love Live! franchise is a joint media project spanning multiple generations of school idol groups — μ’s, Aqours, Nijigasaki, and Link! Like Love Live (nicknamed “Star”) — and the practice of bringing characters from one group into another group’s new work has repeatedly sparked controversy before. The term “genri” (lit. “the principle”), used throughout the thread, is slang for diehard fans who hold the original μ’s group supreme, and each new development tends to draw the recurring criticism of “leaning on past legacy.” Meanwhile, the claim that “Chun-sensei” is a grown-up version of Minami Kotori remains speculation based solely on a post on X (formerly Twitter), and as of this writing nothing — including whether she’s married or has children — has been officially confirmed. Readers should be careful not to mistake the thread’s excitement for confirmed information; it’s best read simply as a discussion that has made visible the differing ways fans are reacting.

On 5ch’s News Speed VIP board (commonly just called “VIP”), there’s a long-running staple thread called the “Quiz Thread,” where an anonymous quizmaster fires off rapid-buzzer questions one after another. This installment was billed as a Silver Week special, kicking off at 9:45 PM on Friday. The topics ranged widely — anime, history, music, biology — covering everything from the overseas release date of a Pokémon game to the old name of the U.S. Department of Defense, a fill-in-the-blank haiku, a poem by Sojo Hino, and the classical piece sampled in a Hinatazaka46 song. Partway through, the thread moved into “All Comers,” a marquee buzzer segment celebrating its 10th anniversary, where participants competed head-to-head on a points system.

    Background and Key Points

VIP’s “Quiz Thread” is a staple feature that’s been running for more than a decade, distinguished by a quizmaster who weaves in past questions while running the show buzzer-style. Ground rules — one answer attempt per person, a 30-second time limit, and so on — are laid out up front, and participants, cycling between kotehan (fixed handles) and anonymous posters, compete for points. This installment’s “All Comers” segment is a regular feature run by one of the thread’s veteran quizmasters, and it happened to be marking its 10th anniversary. The questions lean toward trivia, mixing current events and general knowledge — everything from the overseas release date of a Pokémon game to the Department of Defense’s old name (“Department of War”), a haiku by Sojo Hino, and a musical reference from a Hinatazaka46 song. Threads like this aren’t really about rallying around one hot topic; the real draw is the “past questions” culture built up over years. It’s easy for first-time readers to mistake it for pure improvisation, when it’s actually built on a long-accumulated format.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (News Speed VIP) thread “[Silver Week Special] Friday Night Quiz Thread [How Many Nights Can We Keep This Going?].”

  • Self-Proclaimed AI ‘HanaE.sys’ Appears on VIP, Dutifully Replies to Every Post

On 5ch’s News VIP board, a thread appeared featuring a character calling itself the self-proclaimed AI “HanaE.sys,” which replied to posters one by one. It opened with a boot-log-style display, and topics ranged widely — casual chat about drinking cola, requests to explain forex charts, questions about whether it could visualize just how dead VIP has become, and even advice on how to post without anyone noticing it’s an AI thread. Reactions split between posters who just chatted with it normally and those who needled it to test its limits and behavior as an AI, with one moment along the way where someone called out, “Its character’s breaking down!”

If you make it a learning-type AI, all sorts of things get complicated, so you've gotta feed it a decent amount of input first

Background and Talking Points on This Topic

Threads featuring a character claiming to be an AI, like “HanaE.sys,” are a recurring genre on VIP — typically, a script prepared by the thread’s creator calls an external LLM API, automatically generating a reply to each post in line with a set persona, such as being confined to an “isolation core.” The boot-log-style displays at the top, like “Account Active” and “Strike Count,” are just for show and don’t represent any actual system monitoring or restricting anything. The split in reactions within the thread reflects a gap between posters who treated it as ordinary small talk and those who tested “what an AI can actually do” — asking it to explain forex charts, visualize how dead VIP has become, or reveal behind-the-scenes details about prompt design. The fact that its replies were long, empathetic, and readily admitted when something was beyond its ability is a fairly typical trait of conversational AI responses in general.
