  • Akiyama Mao: “I said I wanted to graduate and it was settled that same day — no one tried to stop me” — Sanma: “That’s sad”

Akiyama Mao, a member of Hello! Project’s Tsubaki Factory, revealed that the company approved her graduation on the very same day she requested it, with no attempt made to talk her out of it. Comedian Akashiya Sanma responded to the revelation with “That’s sad.” Akiyama also shared that she moved to Tokyo alone at age 13 and used to cry every time she traveled back and forth to Osaka out of loneliness. Following her comments, discussion broke out on 5ch: some claimed Morning Musume’s Fukumura Mizuki was held back for about three years before being allowed to graduate, while others noted that Ikuta Erika, Ishida Ayumi, and Makino Maria were reportedly approached by the agency about their own graduation timing. Opinions split over Hello! Project’s graduation customs, with some arguing “there’s no such thing as being held back in the first place” and others countering that “the informal queue of roughly one graduation every six months is effectively a form of holding members back.”

・ Akiyama moved to Tokyo alone at 13
Sanma: As a parent, that's just worrying. 13 is way too young to be on her own.
Akiyama: That's why every time I took the shinkansen from Osaka to Tokyo, I'd end up crying from loneliness. Every single time, on the bullet train.

After all it's not just Tsubaki-ota (Tsubaki Factory fans) — the same goes for Lito-Kyame-ota too. / Apparently they're dying to finally just call themselves plain 'Tsubaki-ota.' / As long as 'Oba-Kyame' (fan nicknames for specific members) is still around, they can't call themselves Tsubaki-ota — they have to say Lito-Kyame-ota instead, lol.

    Background and Points of Debate

In Hello! Project, it’s a recurring topic when an idol’s graduation timing is said to be coordinated by the agency rather than left entirely up to the member. Morning Musume’s Fukumura Mizuki reportedly needed several years before she was allowed to graduate, and some in the thread pointed out that her graduation concert had to be postponed because it couldn’t be held during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, members like Ikuta Erika, Ishida Ayumi, and Makino Maria are said to have had their graduation timing suggested to them by the agency, underscoring the view that graduation timing isn’t decided by the member’s wishes alone. The thread also noted that graduation announcements seem to be paced at roughly one member every six months, sparking a divide between those who argue this waiting-list system amounts to a real form of being held back, and those who insist the agency doesn’t hold anyone back at all — with the important caveat that neither claim has been officially confirmed.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “[Sad News] Akiyama Mao: “I told the company I wanted to graduate and it was decided that same day, they didn’t try to stop me at all” — Sanma: “That’s sad”.”

  • 33-Year-Old Man Falls Hard for 19-Year-Old Concept Café Girl — 5ch: ‘Only Dream If You’re Sure You Won’t Break’

A thread on 5ch’s “Newsspeed VIP” board features a 33-year-old man who says he’s genuinely fallen for a 19-year-old concept café girl (a maid-café-style hostess venue). He takes it as a sign she doesn’t dislike him that she told him where her side job at a family restaurant is, and he’s asking whether he should try asking her out. While plenty of posters offer sober warnings — “taking sales talk seriously is dangerous,” “you’ll just get drained for cash” — others push him to go for it, saying “some women do appreciate kindness” or “just ask her already.” The thread split over how much distance you should keep from the customer-service affection sold at concept cafés and hostess clubs.

You might think you're being level-headed right now, but the moment you start thinking 'maybe I've got a small chance,' your judgment starts clouding over — and honestly it's probably already clouded.
Exchanging personal contact info and having her actually open up to you honestly — that's barely the starting line.
Small talk or a little venting is still well within normal customer service, so if you don't seriously get a grip, you're going to screw this up.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Service at concept cafés and hostess clubs is known for cultivating an intimacy that mimics romantic affection — a kind of “pseudo-romance” sales technique — and it’s long been noted that this structure makes customers prone to mistaking friendliness for genuine feelings. Japan’s age of adulthood was lowered to 18 under the 2022 revision of the Civil Code, and as the original post notes, dating a 19-year-old is not itself illegal. Where the thread split was over how to interpret her telling him where her other job is — some read it as a sign of special trust, others as ordinary friendliness — with posters citing real cases where a customer’s infatuation escalated into financial trouble or blowback after rejection. Friction over this kind of “sincere-love sales talk” is a recurring theme on threads about the nightlife industry, and this case struck a chord less as new information than as a familiar, relatable example.

  • Is There a Job That’s Just Driving, Nothing Else? 5ch Says: ‘Just Be a Taxi Driver’

The thread starter asked the “Whatever Live” board (NanJ) for a job that’s “just driving a car, nothing else,” and suggestions poured in one after another: taxi driver, F1 racer, mobile supermarket driver, limousine driver, septic-tank truck driver, garbage collector, and more. But the OP shot each one down in turn, citing reasons like “day shifts barely get any days off,” “driving the same route over and over is mentally exhausting,” and “I’m scared of carrying passengers” — and the thread kept growing. At one point someone jabbed back, “OP’s really committed to finding reasons not to do anything.”

    Background and Points of Debate

Behind this thread lies interest in the labor shortage in the taxi and trucking industries, and the long hours and scarce days off tied to Japan’s so-called “2024 problem” (new overtime caps on drivers that took effect in 2024). Worth noting: figures mentioned in the replies, like “105 days off a year” or the GPS-log tracking on ad trucks, are just anonymous posts, not verified statistics. Where opinions split was over how seriously to take the OP’s conditions — “I don’t want to carry passengers,” “a fixed route is mentally exhausting” — as genuine concerns versus simple pickiness, a tension captured by the later jab that the OP was “really committed to finding reasons not to do anything.” Even within “driving jobs,” whether passengers are involved, how many hours you’re tied down, and the pay structure vary wildly by occupation — and the sheer range of suggestions here shows just how hard it is to lump “an easy driving job” into one category.

  • Someone Parked in My Contracted Spot Without Permission—Owner Scrambles to Cope

A post on 5channel’s Newsoku VIP board drew attention after a user said someone had parked in their contracted parking spot without permission. The poster had just had their assigned spot changed at the management company’s request, but when they returned, they found a stranger’s car parked in the new spot as well. The management company was closed and couldn’t be reached, so they called the police and took down the license plate number — but were told it wasn’t clear whether anything could be done, since the jurisdiction on file didn’t match where the car was actually parked. The thread filled up with replies discussing the frustrating reality that someone whose spot has been taken over often has almost no real recourse.

    Background and Key Issues

Unauthorized parking in a privately contracted spot is treated differently from a parking violation on a public road, and tends to get handled as a civil dispute between the contract holder and the person who parked without permission. Even when police are called, they can confirm the license plate and contact the owner, but they generally have no authority to forcibly move or remove the vehicle — and if the registered jurisdiction doesn’t match where the car is actually parked, the response gets even slower. Commenters also pointed out that if the victim blocks the car in or puts up a notice, it can backfire and put them in the wrong, meaning the situation often ends up close to something the victim just has to accept and move past. Some replies also brought up past cases where disputes over illegal parking escalated into actual violence, but since those involve real criminal cases, this article does not cover them.

  • Pachinko Player Loses ¥69,000, Then ¥95,000 the Very Next Day — Post Sparks Reactions

A confessional thread appeared on “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (a 5ch live-commentary board) after a poster admitted to losing big two days in a row at pachinko — ¥69,000 one day, ¥95,000 the next. The poster confessed to feeling “done with this” and even “wanting to die,” while explaining a habit of only playing machines they personally like, and a tendency to raise their bets when trying to win back losses. When they described losing ¥90,000 in three hours, some commenters did the math on the maximum number of balls that can be fired per minute and suspected the figure was exaggerated, while other hardened veterans came forward with their own tales of losing ¥120,000 or even ¥300,000. The discussion ended up being less about the exact amounts lost and more about how to deal with gambling itself.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Pachinko and pachislot machines are regulated under Japan’s Adult Entertainment Business Law, which sets an upper limit on how many balls can be fired per minute. In the thread, some commenters did the math based on that limit and questioned the truth of the poster’s claim of losing ¥90,000 in three hours. It’s worth noting that actual payout rates vary widely depending on the machine, its setting, and how the parlor adjusts the nails, and the comparison figures for horse racing and lotteries that came up in the thread were just participants’ subjective impressions, not necessarily matching official statistics. Meanwhile, many comments drew a distinction between “playing for fun without caring about winning” and “seriously trying to win,” while the original poster confessed to being unable to break free from a losing pattern of raising bets while trying to win back losses — a struggle that’s hard to write off as just a funny story.

※This article is composed from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Lost ¥69,000 at the pachinko parlor, then ¥95,000 the next day.”

  • Why Are So Many People Saying “Japan Is Over”? 5ch Fires Back: “You’re the One Who’s Over”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board went up discussing people who only ever say “Japan is over” or “Japan has no future.” In response to the original poster’s question, “Is that actually true?”, some commenters agreed, citing the declining birthrate, aging population, and sluggish GDP, while plenty of others pushed back hard with lines like “That’s just people shouting their wishes online” and “You’re the only one who’s over.” Replies invoking entrepreneur Takafumi Horie’s comments and others pointing to the real struggles of the “Employment Ice Age” generation kept the thread from turning into a simple back-and-forth of doom and gloom.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The “Employment Ice Age generation,” repeatedly mentioned in the thread, refers to people who graduated school from the late 1990s through the early 2000s and faced the harsh hiring environment known as Japan’s “employment ice age.” The problem of people who couldn’t land regular full-time jobs back then and are now reaching middle age while still stuck in non-regular employment remains a live issue in social security and labor policy today. On the other hand, the claim that “GDP and the birth rate are both hopeless” is partly rooted in real statistical shifts — such as Japan’s nominal GDP being overtaken by Germany in 2023, dropping it to fourth place in the world. The clash in the thread comes down to a gap in temperature between those who cite these structural numbers as grounds for pessimism and those who treat the very act of complaining as a personal failing — and it’s worth noting that both sides are cherry-picking certain facts to make their case.

  • MBS’s ‘Yantan’ Recording Studio Set to Relocate — 5ch Reacts: ‘The Dressing Room Had Amazing Sunlight’

Sakurai Rio, personality on MBS Radio’s ‘Young Town Saturday,’ revealed in a blog post ahead of the September 19 broadcast that “the Yantan studio is going to change.” Her post, reflecting on the wistfulness of leaving a studio she’d visited for over two years, drew reactions in the 5ch live-thread as well. This episode featured Tsubaki Factory’s Akiyama Mao as a guest, and talk also turned to the fall programming shake-up — including word that the “Ero Corner” segment will return souped-up in October, and that Novel Core will take over the slot from Ihara Rikka.

Background and key points of this discussion

According to an article shared within the thread, MBS Radio is planning a major overhaul of the programming around ‘Young Town’ in its October schedule shake-up: Novel Core will take over the Friday personality slot from Ihara Rikka, and a new show, ‘Young Town A,’ will launch. The studio relocation discussed in this thread appears, timing-wise, to be tied to this same fall reshuffle. That said, the thread doesn’t reveal the detailed reasons for the move or the location of the new studio — Sakurai Rio’s blog post itself only goes as far as saying the ‘vibe might change a bit.’ It’s worth reading carefully so as not to conflate the two: the programming-overhaul news and Sakurai’s personal note about the studio move come from separate sources.

  • Former Manzai Comedian Nakata Botan Dies at 78 — Battled Lung Cancer Since Effectively Retiring in 2023

Yahoo News broke the story on the night of September 19, 2026 that Botan, one half of the comedy duo Nakata Kaus-Botan, had died at age 78. According to reports, he had been fighting lung cancer and had effectively been retired since 2023. On 5ch, alongside shock at the news, posters reminisced about Botan’s 1988 arrest on gambling charges in Fujiidera, Osaka Prefecture, the “debt jokes” that defined his act for decades, and stories about his relationship with comedy legend Akashiya Sanma.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nakata Kaus-Botan was a Kamigata (Osaka-style) manzai duo formed in 1966, with Botan serving for decades as the tsukkomi (straight man) of the pair in Osaka’s comedy world. He had a past arrest on gambling charges from 1988, which some have linked to a “yakuza” image, but the actual charge was for participating as a customer in a gambling session run by an organized crime group — he was never a gang member himself. The thread was split between the view that “back then it wasn’t unusual to frequent gambling dens” and the view that “ordinary people just didn’t do that,” reflecting differing perceptions of how close the entertainment world and the underworld once were. His decades of debt-themed comedy and the stories about his relationship with Akashiya Sanma were widely known parts of his public image, and his death prompted many posters to revisit that persona.

  • Edge Is Good Enough: Frustration Grows Over Chrome’s Ad-Blocker Crackdown

On 5ch’s Newsspeed VIP board, a thread about choosing a browser took off. Posters noted that where people once stayed up all night arguing over the distinct merits of browsers like Opera and Firefox, nowadays extensions and other core features come standard in every browser, leaving little reason to bother switching. The conversation soon turned to frustration over Google Chrome tightening its restrictions on ad-blocking extensions, and eventually spiraled into a debate over the very definition of “freedom” on Google’s services.

As a basic principle, humans have freedom.
Google's cloud storage has its contents monitored, after all.
And there's also the option to use GPT instead of Gemini.
We're not stuck in an environment where you're forced to use only Google.

Then that means there is freedom of choice, doesn't it?
Your line — "don't get the wrong idea about freedom, nobody said anything about freedom" — doesn't hold up.

    Re: #49
Sure, there's freedom the moment you step away from Chrome.
But whatever you pick next isn't guaranteed to offer that same freedom.

    Background and Key Points

Google has shifted Chrome’s extension framework to “Manifest V3,” and starting in mid-2024 it began progressively disabling extensions built on the old spec (Manifest V2). This change has restricted how ad-blocking extensions like uBlock Origin behave, so the complaint in the thread that “ad-blocking has gotten harder” reflects something that’s genuinely happening. Meanwhile, Apple ended support for the Windows version of Safari back in 2012, and no updates have been released since the final version, 5.1.7. As posters point out, there are real risks to sticking with a browser that’s stopped receiving updates. The latter half of the thread spiraled into an abstract debate over “whether there’s freedom on Google’s platform,” but this reads less like a factual dispute and more like a circular argument stemming from posters using the word “freedom” differently — so this article omits the more meandering back-and-forth from the tail end of the thread.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Newsspeed VIP) thread “The Age of Chrome’s Total Dominance Is Over Too.”

  • Tokyo’s Real Elite Aren’t Shinjuku or Shibuya — They’re Chiyoda and Minato, Say 5ch Users (“Ginza’s in Chuo, After All”)

The thread kicked off with a confession: “I always thought Shinjuku and Shibuya wards were the top-tier areas of Tokyo.” As replies piled up, commenters argued that Chiyoda ward — home to the Imperial Palace and the National Diet Building — and Minato ward — packed with embassies and upscale residential districts — are the “true elite” of the capital. Others pushed back, noting that Shinjuku and Shibuya still beat them in name recognition as entertainment districts, and the debate split over what standard should even be used to measure a ward’s "status." The conversation gradually drifted into tangents about Saitama’s Isetan department store, NHK’s relocation, and historical trivia involving Ota Dokan and Emperor Meiji.

    1AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:20
So Chiyoda and Minato really are the top dogs, huh.
    3AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:22
Status-wise, Chiyoda is head and shoulders above the rest.
    5AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:23
Bunkyo ward's only got Tokyo University and Tokyo Dome going for it.
Plus a stretch of just a few dozen meters in the north that pokes outside the Yamanote Line.
    8AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:32
If you're not from the greater Tokyo area, isn't that just the normal impression?
Chiyoda and Minato don't have entertainment districts that beat Shinjuku or Shibuya.
And Ginza's actually in Chuo ward anyway.
    12AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:42
Shinjuku had Honda founder Soichiro Honda's mansion in Nishi-Ochiai.
    Shibuya's got Shoto too.
Both are older, more prestigious upscale residential areas than anything Minato's got.
    14AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:45
You don't know about Kintaro Hattori's (the Seiko founder's) mansion in Shirokane?
Honda's place doesn't even come close.

Narrowly defined, "Tokyo" means the three central wards.
Broadly defined, it's the old 15 wards of former Tokyo City.
    17AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:47
Well obviously the area with the Imperial Palace and the Akasaka Imperial Estate ranks higher.
    18AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:48
It comes up a lot in rakugo too — old Edo proper only went as far as Fukagawa, right around what's now Monzen-Nakacho and Kiba.
    20AnonymousSep 19, 2026 19:53
The Prince Hotel chain got its name because Seibu Railway bought up former imperial estate land.
Just a little trivia for you.

If you're moving, go for the west side of the Yamanote Line, for what it's worth.

Inside the Yamanote loop → rent's too high.
East side of the Yamanote Line → floods in heavy rain, weak against earthquakes, basically unlivable.

I live in a tiny, cheap condo in Minato, but the ultra-luxury branded condo nearby is occupied only by foreigners.
Probably embassy-related people, since it's close to the embassies.
    25AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:17
Shinjuku ward is surprisingly plain, actually.
Since Fuji TV and Bunka Broadcasting both moved out, the area's basically turned into an ordinary residential neighborhood.
    26AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:17
Chiyoda and Minato are impressive as you'd expect, but other wards have their moments too —
parts of Koto, Setagaya, and Toshima.
    27AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:20
Thinking about it that way, Minato is solid all around.
Meanwhile places like Shibuya and Hatagaya kind of suck.
    28AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:22
Compared to Shinjuku ward, which is basically a one-hit wonder with just Shinjuku itself, Shibuya ward feels stacked with multiple strong spots — "Shibuya," "Harajuku," "Shinjuku Station South Exit," and "Ebisu."

Tokyo's all about the combination of elements, really…

Leave out even one and things get thrown off.

Personally, I'm rooting for Rikkyo University in Ikebukuro.

As for Shinjuku, Kabukicho has surprisingly declined — I feel like plastic surgery culture is what's trending there now.
    30AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:24
Personally I feel like Shibuya's been kind of flat lately too…?

It's stylish, sure, but whether it's got much culture beyond that is questionable.

The best residential areas in Tokyo are along the Inokashira Line or the Ikegami Line.
    32AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:25
Honestly, hearing "Shibuya" or "Shinjuku" these days doesn't really conjure much of an image anymore…

They don't feel like they're thriving.

Though there are plenty of normies (outgoing, high-energy types) around.
    33AnonymousSep 19, 2026 20:26

The most venerable, old-guard department store in the Kansai region is Sogo, which originated in Osaka.
But Sogo cried out, "Kansai's full of poor people, sales just won't go up!!",
closed every single one of its Kansai stores, and pulled out of the region entirely.
Then, fighting for survival, it expanded into the Kanto region —
one store in Yokohama, one in Chiba —
and, relying on Saitama the most, opened two stores there: one in Kawaguchi and one in Omiya, Saitama City.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Debates over the “status” of Tokyo’s 23 wards tend to talk past each other because there are multiple, competing yardsticks to begin with — real estate prices, the presence of the Imperial Palace or the National Diet Building, the concentration of embassies, the presence of historic mansions, and so on. Chiyoda and Minato wards concentrate facilities that project “authority” — government institutions, embassies, and the former mansions of the old nobility — while Shinjuku and Shibuya built their reputations through dense entertainment and commercial districts, so which one counts as “the face of Tokyo” really depends on where you stand. The thread repeatedly brought up Saitama’s Isetan store and NHK’s move to Kawaguchi, but this is a classic 5ch running gag that pokes fun at the Saitama-versus-Tokyo rivalry — best enjoyed as a tangent rather than taken as administrative fact. The anecdotes about Ota Dokan and Emperor Meiji are grounded in historical fact, though the finer details as presented in individual posts haven’t been independently verified.

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “I’m just a dumb country bumpkin, so I mistakenly thought Tokyo’s top-tier areas were “Shinjuku” and “Shibuya”.”
