  • “Nagoya’s a Car Town, So Trains Must Be Scarce” — Guy Checks the Timetable, Sparks a 5ch Debate

A post that checked the train timetable based on the assumption “Nagoya’s a car-dependent city, so trains must run infrequently” became a hot topic on 5ch. In reality, Nagoya’s subway network — led by the Higashiyama Line — turns out to be quite well developed, undermining the simple idea that a car-centric city automatically means sparse trains. The thread saw detailed comparisons of service frequency with other cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama, along with discussion of stations such as Fujigaoka and Gokiso and access to Chubu Centrair International Airport, with opinions split over just how good or bad Nagoya’s transit really is.

That's dumb — I've lived in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya for work transfers, and Nagoya's trains are overwhelmingly worse.
The Higashiyama Line cited as the source is Nagoya's #1 subway "spiral,"
but Tokyo's Tozai Line and Osaka's Midosuji Line run about 30 trains at rush hour — more than double the Higashiyama Line.

    Re: #94
Except since it's sandwiched between Tokyo and Osaka, nobody really bothers to go all the way to Nagoya

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nagoya’s public transit is often described as having “few trains because it’s a car-dependent city,” but what sparked this discussion was the actual timetable, centered on the subway’s Higashiyama Line. In the thread, some posts compared rush-hour frequency with Tokyo’s Tozai Line and Osaka’s Midosuji Line, pointing out that in absolute terms Nagoya doesn’t match the major lines of the biggest cities. On the other hand, many comments highlighted ways the Nagoya area’s rail network is actually quite developed — the connection between Fujigaoka and the Linimo maglev line, and the state of the Aichi Loop Railway, for example. The debate moved away from a simple “more or less” binary and toward how to evaluate differences in city scale and the role each line plays. What readers can easily get wrong is that the common image of “Nagoya equals car society” doesn’t necessarily match the actual state of its subway development — and this thread put that assumption to the test using the hard data of a timetable.

  • 5ch Suggests Hobbies for a 34-Year-Old Single Guy — “Shogi? I’ve Stuck With It 3-4 Years”

On 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, a 34-year-old single thread starter posted looking for a new hobby. Suggestions poured in covering everything from shogi, bass guitar, and hair removal treatments to mountain bike downhill riding and travel, though the OP gently shot down suggestions like pickup artistry and gambling. What stood out was how much the thread leaned on posters’ own firsthand experience — one commenter shared having played shogi for three to four years after starting in their 30s, another cited a concrete figure of “13 sessions for 110,000 yen” spent on hair removal, and someone mentioned their company even has a light music club.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Threads that hand a single person a hobby” are a recurring genre on 5ch, one that tends to draw replies from single people in their 20s and 30s with money and time to spare. This time, easy-to-start-solo hobbies like shogi and bass guitar were suggested alongside more costly or physically demanding ones like hair removal and mountain bike downhill riding, and the main point of friction was the OP repeatedly saying they’d prefer something that doesn’t cost money. On the hair removal front, posters traded concrete figures from their own experience, like “13 sessions for 110,000 yen,” which is genuinely useful data. As for shogi, one poster said they started in their 30s and have kept up online matches for three to four years, suggesting that well-developed matchmaking apps have lowered the barrier for self-taught beginners. There were also a few replies that veered into criticizing the OP’s character for turning down suggestions, though that’s treated here as a tangent separate from the thread’s main thread of hobby-hunting.

  • NHK resumes door-to-door sales visits — 5ch: “Firmly repeat ‘I don’t have one’ and they’ll give up fast”

NHK has resumed door-to-door sales operations through an outside contractor — sales it discontinued in 2023 — NHK confirmed to reporters on the 21st. The broadcaster has posted deficits ever since cutting its fees that same year, and aims to boost fee revenue by strengthening its sales operations. NHK says it is expanding its in-person approach on a trial basis. On 5ch threads, there was a notable divide between practical tips on how to handle door-to-door reps and differing views over the fact that, while signing a receiving contract is a legal obligation under the Broadcast Act, there’s no criminal penalty for it — enforcement instead comes through civil lawsuits.

NHK has resumed outsourcing door-to-door sales visits aimed at signing new receiving contracts to an outside contractor, NHK confirmed to reporters on the 21st.

Contracted door-to-door sales were discontinued in 2023, but the broadcaster has posted deficits ever since that year’s fee cut, and is strengthening its sales operations to boost fee revenue.

NHK explained: “We have decided to expand our in-person approach on a trial basis.”

    61AnonymousSep 21, 2026 22:20
Enforcement power (court proceedings): If someone has installed a receiver but refuses to sign a contract, NHK can sue, and once a winning verdict (ordering acceptance of the contract) becomes final, the contract is deemed legally established regardless of the person's will — that's the binding force involved.

Whether there's a penalty: The Broadcast Act itself has no direct criminal penalty (fine or imprisonment) for owning a TV and not signing a contract. However, as noted above, there is a legal risk of being compelled via civil lawsuit to sign a contract or pay unpaid fees.

No matter how much you explain and send them off,
there are multiple contracted companies, so it's just someone from a different company next time — nothing changes.

Background and key points of this discussion

Under Article 64 of the Broadcast Act, NHK’s receiving contract requirement obligates any household with a receiving device to sign a contract, but the article itself contains no criminal penalty provision — if someone refuses to pay, NHK must file a civil lawsuit, and only once a verdict is finalized is the contract considered established. This system design — “there’s an obligation, but no criminal penalty” — fueled a divide in the thread between posters arguing “the contract is legally mandatory” and those arguing “since there’s no penalty, you don’t have to comply.” Some posts also pointed to the string of lawsuits involving Takashi Tachibana, former leader of the “Party to Protect the People from NHK,” which have built up case law around receiving contracts and non-payment. The deficits following the 2023 fee cut are cited as the direct reason for resuming door-to-door sales, but the original article doesn’t detail the specific sales tactics used by the contracted companies or the quality of their approach — how much the “in-person approach” actually gets ramped up remains to be seen in practice.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “NHK resumes door-to-door sales visits it discontinued in 2023, aiming to boost fee revenue by strengthening its sales operations.”

  • 5ch VIP Marks 10 Years of Quiz Threads with a Respect-for-the-Aged Day Special: “Can’t Help Not Knowing It”

On 5channel’s News VIP board (news4vip), a buzzer-style quiz tournament was held to mark Respect for the Aged Day. In this template-style thread, quizmaster “Rx” poses questions while participants race to answer and rack up points — this time framed as a special “10th Anniversary SO: Respect for the Aged Commemoration” round. The questions ranged widely, from basic geography (name that salt lake) to trivia about the Naoki Prize won by sci-fi writer Shin’ichi Hoshi, to a pun question tying “Monte Carlo” to earthquake news. Along the way, a dispute broke out over whether “wansaka” (a Japanese word resembling onomatopoeia) really counts as a mimetic word, prompting the quizmaster to revise a ruling after being called out.

    【 Answering Points 】
◯ One answer attempt per person, 30-second time limit

◯ Silent symbols can be left out
Extra characters count as a "wrong answer"
※ For now, adding one silent symbol is allowed when answering in half-width numerals

◯ Names: full name for people from kanji-using cultures,
surname only is fine for everyone else, as a rule

◯ Unless stated otherwise, answering in hiragana is fine
Hiragana OK… for "What's the kanji?" "What's the English word?"
"What 3-kanji term is this?" etc.
Hiragana NOT OK… for "《 Specify: kanji 》"
"Please answer in 3 kanji characters." etc.

    Background and Key Points

“Respect for the Aged Day” falls on the third Monday of September, which in 2026 lands on September 21. As the thread itself notes with the term “Silver Week,” this period is the popular nickname for the run of holidays around Respect for the Aged Day, and this quiz session was a special round themed around that holiday, billed as the “10th Anniversary SO: Respect for the Aged Commemoration.” Judging from the dates of the past questions cited as examples (2007, 2017, 2018, and so on), this quiz thread format itself appears to have been running on the VIP board for more than a decade. The point of contention came when the quizmaster, having initially ruled a question “void,” reconsidered and revised that ruling after being called out in a reply — illustrating how the line between right and wrong comes down to the quizmaster’s discretion and the thread’s back-and-forth, rather than being strictly bound by a template. The quiz content itself centered on general-knowledge questions like the Dead Sea, the Naoki Prize, and Lafcadio Hearn, with some exchanges — such as crude joke answers unsuitable for an article — left out.

※This article is composed as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (News VIP) thread “[After the High School Quiz Championship] Monday Night Quiz Thread [Let’s have a quiz showdown!].”

  • Rio Sakurai Appears on NHK Building Window-Cleaning Special — 5ch: “She’s So Competent It Doesn’t Feel Out of Place”

NHK’s “Japan’s Hard-to-Clean Buildings Directory” featured Shinjuku’s Cocoon Tower, with Morning Musume。’26 member Rio Sakurai brought on as host. The show explores a building’s structure and charm through the lens of window cleaning, and this episode’s subject was a cocoon-shaped skyscraper standing 50 stories and 200 meters tall. On 5ch, threads buzzed with reactions to the broadcast starting a few minutes late, surprise that the L-shaped earthquake/typhoon info ticker varies by region, and praise for Sakurai’s composed hosting.

Japanese building architecture draws worldwide attention for its striking designs and advanced technology. As more buildings take on bold, unconventional shapes, it’s often hard to imagine how their windows even get cleaned.

Using window cleaning as an entry point actually reveals a building’s deeper appeal.

This time, the stage is Cocoon Tower, the symbolic skyscraper of Nishi-Shinjuku — a mysterious, cocoon-like shape standing 50 stories and 200 meters tall.

    Background and Talking Points

“Japan’s Hard-to-Clean Buildings Directory” is an NHK feature that showcases architectural ingenuity through the lens of window-washing work, and this episode focused on Cocoon Tower, the symbolic landmark of Nishi-Shinjuku. In the thread, one explanation notes that NHK displays the L-shaped earthquake/typhoon information ticker via a data-broadcasting system so that it’s viewable regardless of region or TV model, answering the simple question of why its approach differs from commercial broadcasters. Meanwhile, the reply about the window cleaners’ daily wage cites no source and remains pure speculation, so it should be taken with caution. An architect and an architecture-media editor-in-chief also appeared as guests on the show, but the thread’s interest centered mainly on the hosting dynamic, with little discussion of the architectural details themselves.

  • Which Hello! Project Group Should Suzuki Kotomi Join? 5ch: ‘This Is Actually Pretty Tough’

On 5ch’s Hello! Project board, a thread heated up over which Hello! Project group trainee Suzuki Kotomi should ultimately be placed in. While posters rated her looks highly, opinions on her singing and dancing skills were mixed, with some sarcastically suggesting she ‘just go to a group where you only have to move to the beat.’ Others pointed to precedents like ‘even Ishiyama turned out fine,’ citing members whose skills were once doubted but who later grew into their roles, suggesting she could still develop with the right training. As for specific placements, multiple group names came up — including Tsubaki Factory, Juice=Juice, and Rosy Chronicle — sparking discussion that weighed height and compatibility with existing members.

Unless they add four or more tall new members, that is

Background and Key Points of Discussion

In Hello! Project, new members go through a trainee period before being assigned to a group, so which ‘color’ a trainee fits tends to become a topic of discussion early on. It’s worth noting that the ‘5-category, 45-point max’ scoring shared in the thread appears to be an unofficial tally compiled independently by posters, not an official skill assessment. As the comparison with Ishiyama illustrates, several Hello! Project members who scored low in singing and dancing while still inexperienced went on to improve significantly, so the thread’s discussion also touched on how current scores alone can’t fully predict future potential. Regarding placement, many opinions emphasized height differences and compatibility with existing members, reflecting the recurring tension in Hello! Project’s group formation between prioritizing visuals versus prioritizing skill.

  • ANGERME’s Fall Tour Nagoya Show Still Has Day-of Tickets — Leader Ise Puts Out the Call

With ANGERME’s fall tour stop in Nagoya just a day away, group leader Ise took to her blog to appeal to fans, writing that she’d love to see more people come in on day-of tickets. In the 5ch live-discussion thread, posters pointed to the fact that sister group Juice=Juice’s shows around the same time had sold out in advance, raising doubts about whether the venue capacities chosen for ANGERME actually match its real drawing power. At the same time, some voiced fatigue with seeing this kind of turnout appeal made ahead of nearly every show, so opinions split between blaming the agency’s venue choices for the weak turnout and taking issue with the repeated appeals themselves.

Tomorrow’s the fall tour stop in Nagoya!

Honestly, I’d love for more of you to grab day-of tickets and come!

There’s still room to get in…!

The spring tour was already dead empty everywhere except opening night and the smaller-capacity Osaka show, so it's a bit late to act like this is some new problem lol

    Background and Discussion Points

Behind this appeal lies the fact that during the spring tour, too, seats went unfilled at every show except opening night and the Osaka performance — leading to speculation in the thread that the agency sets venue sizes based on the group’s popularity from a year earlier. Fellow Hello! Project group Tsubaki Factory is also said to still be carrying the handicap of seats it previously had to give back, suggesting that differences in each group’s drawing power feed directly into the difficulty of picking the right venue. Opinion in the thread split between those who blame the agency’s venue selection for the poor turnout and those who are simply worn out by the members having to plead “please come” at nearly every show — circumstances that go beyond a simple matter of one group being more or less popular than another.

  • Pharmacists’ Salaries and Future Prospects Divide Opinion — 5ch: “AI Can’t Take Responsibility, So the Job Will Survive”

A thread titled “Is it true that pharmacists don’t even earn that much and have unstable jobs?” got lively on 5ch. The discussion ranged from pay and working conditions to broader industry structure — covering the gap in difficulty between pharmacy school and medical school, fears that AI will replace dispensing work, layoffs among MRs (medical representatives), and the possibility of cuts to dispensing fees. Opinions that “AI can’t take responsibility, so the pharmacist job itself won’t disappear” coexisted with views that “the number of pharmacists will be scaled back going forward,” making for a discussion that leaned toward neither simple optimism nor pessimism.

    116AnonymousSep 21, 2026 21:32
    Re: #112
Did you know most hospitals in Japan are running deficits?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Since pharmacy programs shifted to a six-year curriculum starting in the 2006 academic year, enrollment quotas have kept growing, and the number of people sitting the national pharmacist exam has remained high. Dispensing fees, meanwhile, are official prices revised with every round of medical fee reform, so changes in the business environment tend to flow directly into on-the-ground pay and conditions. The thread’s point that “hospital pharmacists earn less” is really the flip side of the fact that many hospitals themselves operate at a deficit, which tends to create a pay gap compared with working at a dispensing pharmacy or drugstore. The reduction in MR (medical representative) headcount is also a real trend playing out across pharmaceutical companies in recent years, driven by the shift to online sales channels and digital information delivery. As for the argument that AI will replace pharmacists, the discussion tends to blend two different things — tasks that can genuinely be streamlined, like prescription auditing and inventory management, and tasks where a human still has to be involved, like final medication counseling and taking responsibility for outcomes. Within the thread itself, the debate settled into a middle-ground view: “the job itself won’t disappear, but fewer people will be needed.”

  • Final Fantasy’s “Greatest Entry” Debate: Japanese Fans Split Between 5/6/10, Western Fans Rally Behind 7/8

A thread on 5ch’s Nandemo Jikkyo G board asked, “What’s the greatest Final Fantasy game?” According to posters, Japanese players tend to champion FF5, FF6, and FF10, while overseas players’ support clusters around FF7 and FF8. Some noted this pattern was sparked by discussion of which FF titles various Hololive VTuber members have played. The thread saw takes like “FF6 poured too many resources into presentation” and “FF7 kicked off the cutscene-heavy era, leaving less room for imagination,” while others pushed back by noting that FF6 and FF12 often top overseas fan-ranking projects — turning it into a debate over the gap between gut feeling and actual poll numbers.

Name recognition keeps climbing and currency values keep inflating, so of course the newest entry tends to top the sales charts.
If it didn't, that'd honestly be a huge failure.
    58AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:36
But you got chills when Zidane popped out at the end of 9's ending, didn't you?

I shivered when he headbutted Materazzi (a joke conflating FF9's Zidane with footballer Zinedine Zidane's infamous World Cup headbutt).

7 and 10 are strong on character and story, but as games they're just okay.
Once 7 pushed the series into cutscene-movie territory, leaning on story became kind of unavoidable.

    Re: #65
Yeah, I genuinely felt like room for imagination disappeared starting with 7.

    Re: #66
Then it must've been sold dirt cheap.
Just guessing, but a game that originally cost 9,504 yen was probably being sold at something like 980 yen — about 90% off.

    101AnonymousSep 21, 2026 20:57
6 probably poured too many resources into presentation.
Even Sakaguchi himself called it the most polished FF.

But if you actually surveyed fans on polish and completeness, I bet 6 would land dead last.
That kind of gap in perception is probably what's behind the series' decline now.

    Re: #101
But baking the character's raw level straight into the damage formula makes zero sense, no matter how you look at it.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

In fan polls for the FF series, gut-feeling impressions and actual tallied results tend to diverge. While the thread claimed “overseas fans favor FF7 and FF8,” some pushed back, noting that FF6 and FF12 often top the rankings in overseas fan-voting projects — turning the gap between perception and statistics into a central point of debate. FF6 is said to have been called “the most polished FF” by its own developer, Hironobu Sakaguchi, yet it’s also a game that splits opinion, given experimental-for-its-time features like factoring a character’s raw level directly into damage calculations. As for FF7, some pointed out that the ‘FFVII 20th Anniversary Ultimania’ notes it faced criticism at launch over its linear progression and the arrow indicators on the world map — a reminder that its current reputation as the “greatest FF of all time” wasn’t the consensus from day one, but was largely shaped years later, a detail that’s easy to overlook.

  • Joy and Heartbreak at the All Comers: 5ch Thread — “I Let Out a Scream”

A thread appeared on 5ch’s “Newsspeed VIP” board featuring “Mr. Chudoon,” an ASCII-art (AA) character beloved among horse racing fans. The thread live-blogged the day of the All Comers race — one poster celebrated nailing an exacta bet, while another, who’d hedged with a long-shot pick only to watch it factor into the finish instead of their favorite, lamented, “I let out a scream I’ve never made before.” When someone reported spotting a snake along the way, another replied, “That’s good luck.” Photos of an approaching typhoon and a chat about grape varieties kept the thread’s usual freewheeling banter going.

    Background and Talking Points

“Mr. Chudoon,” who appears throughout the thread, is an ASCII-art (AA) character long beloved on 5ch’s “Newsspeed VIP” board, known for posting live commentary and bragging about betting slips on race days. The All Comers discussed here is a Grade 2 race held at Nakayama Racecourse, drawing attention each year as a tune-up ahead of the fall Grade 1 season. The “exacta” (umatan) mentioned in the posts is a bet requiring the top two finishers in exact order, which pays out well when it hits. The “scream” in post #31 appears to reflect a mix of shock and frustration after the poster’s favored combination missed while the horse they’d bought as a just-in-case pick ended up factoring into the result. As for the idea that spotting a snake brings good luck, that comes from folk belief holding snakes to be messengers of Benzaiten, a goddess of fortune — it has no scientific basis. It’s worth remembering these are all personal anecdotes posted to an anonymous message board, not independently verified facts.
