  • Man Pushing 40 Rocks Streetwear, 5ch Weighs In: ‘Mostly Uniqlo Brands’

A thread titled “I’m pushing 40 but I still dress streetwear” popped up on Newsoku VIP, sparking a wide-ranging chat about fashion for people in their 40s and beyond. The original poster claimed to stick to street-style staples like collarless T-shirts and varsity jackets, prompting pushback from other users, including comments like “A guy pushing 40 basically never goes out in a collarless shirt.” The discussion also turned to brand preferences, ranging from Uniqlo and select shops to the merits of luxury labels like Prada and Louis Vuitton, and even claims that LEE overalls are starting to trend — turning into a broader debate over where exactly age and fashion draw the line.

Right now the sharpest look's gotta be LEE overalls.
With regular people panicking that "slim's coming back now that oversized is swinging the other way!", rocking overalls to stand out from that crowd is apparently what's been trending since late August.

In most corners of streetwear culture, a T-shirt counts as underwear — you're supposed to layer something with a collar over it.
Going all-collarless is only for when you're deliberately going for a "beggar-ish" look.
That's basically what punk or gangsta style is about, right?

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Streetwear” originally refers to a casual style rooted in skate and hip-hop culture, and even fine-grained etiquette debates — like whether to layer a collared piece over a T-shirt — aren’t unusual within that scene. The brand names that came up in the thread, such as Supreme, Stussy, and Neighborhood, all belong to that lineage, but it’s also common to mix them with mass-market or select-shop brands like Uniqlo and United Arrows — the two aren’t necessarily at odds. The claim that “LEE overalls are trending right now” is worth taking with a grain of salt, since it’s just one poster’s personal impression with no supporting data cited. As for the link between age and fashion, Japan still holds fairly strongly to the idea of “dressing age-appropriately,” while the people actually living the style pushed back, insisting they have no intention of changing how they dress just because of their age — and that gap in attitude was the recurring fault line running through the whole thread.

  • ‘A Grown Man Using GATSBY Hair Wax?’ — NanJ Users Wage a Hair Care Civil War

A post reading “A grown man still using GATSBY or Mandom hair wax lol” set off a sprawling hair-care discussion on the NanJ (Livejupiter-style) board. GATSBY and Mandom are long-running staple brands mostly associated with teens and twenty-somethings, and there’s a running joke about still using them in your 30s and 40s. While plenty of users reported switching products as they aged — “I ended up with hair oil,” “I use Yanagiya pomade” — opinions split sharply over whether hard-hold wax actually harms scalp circulation and clogs pores, and the thread devolved into a fight over who had any real evidence.

    65AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:35
    Re: #59
Does it actually affect your pores?
Even facial hair you don't touch gets stiffer with age too — isn't that just body type and aging?
Though I guess if it's weakening the hair, fine, that's different
    57AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:31
It's not that your hair got coarse from aging — it's that hard-hold product wrecked it and made it frizzy and rough.
That damage doesn't come back, so if you don't want to pile on more damage and go bald, quit the hair product
    61AnonymousSep 23, 2026 21:33

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The relationship between hair styling products and thinning hair comes up regularly even within the beauty industry, but there’s little medically established evidence that using wax or spray directly causes hair loss. The explanations flying around the thread — that “the scalp can’t breathe” or that products “penetrate via a liposome effect” — aren’t backed by rigorous cosmetic-science evidence either, and it’s worth noting the discussion proceeded with personal anecdotes and hearsay mixed in throughout. That said, stylists do point out that slathering product all the way down to the scalp, or failing to rinse it out thoroughly, can clog pores and worsen scalp conditions — so the “it’s a usage problem” point raised later in the thread was on the mark. Given that GATSBY and Mandom have long been marketed as brands for teens and twenty-somethings, the original poster’s underlying question — whether you should “graduate” from them as an adult — reflects the brands’ historical positioning.

  • Ishin Weighs Taxing Pachinko Winnings, Debate Set for Year-End — 5ch: ‘Let Us Deduct Our Losses’

Word spread that Japan’s Ishin (Japan Innovation Party) plans to open internal discussions by year-end on a proposal to tighten taxation of pachinko winnings, sparking a lively debate on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyo G” (anything-goes live chat) board. Under tax law, pachinko winnings are technically classified as “occasional income” and are supposed to be declared, but in practice only a tiny fraction of players actually pay tax on them. Commenters were split: some argued that if winnings get taxed, losses should be deductible too; others suspected Ishin was singling out the pachinko industry while pushing to legalize casinos; and some expressed hope the move would curb welfare recipients’ pachinko spending.

Japan Innovation Party may propose year-end debate on taxing pachinko players’ income

Under Japanese tax law, pachinko winnings count as “occasional income” — half of net annual profit, after expenses and a ¥500,000 special deduction, is technically taxable — but almost no one actually files a return on it. As part of a broader overhaul of gambling tax rules, Ishin is putting a spotlight on the issue and starting internal discussions aimed mainly at full-time pros and high-volume players. The focus is on tightening identity checks at cash-out and whether losses can be deducted against winnings; the industry is voicing concern, though the impact on casual hobby players is expected to be limited.

It's an open secret, after all.
As long as you record just the winnings, you can pay the tax on them.
They should just require ID verification at both the prize counter and the cash-out shop.

    Re: #125
Making it subject to taxation basically upgrades it to the status of state-sanctioned gambling, so it'll survive.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Under Japan’s income tax law, pachinko winnings are classified as “occasional income”: half of the amount left after subtracting necessary expenses and a ¥500,000 special deduction from annual profit is subject to tax. In practice, however, only a small fraction of players actually file returns on it, and the cash-out mechanism (the so-called “three-shop system”) has long made the real scale of winnings hard to track. What Ishin is reportedly considering is a plan to tighten taxation mainly targeting full-time players and big winners, with the impact on casual hobbyist players expected to be limited. Within the thread, opinions split between those arguing that losses should be deductible against winnings and those pointing out that a reporting system already technically exists. Some also voiced hope that stricter ID checks at cash-out would curb pachinko use among welfare recipients. It’s worth noting, though, that this is still at the stage of internal party discussion and has not yet taken shape as concrete legislation.

  • Rosy Chronicle Voice Training: Hidetaka Sugai’s Fiery Coaching Sparks the Usual 5ch Reaction

In a voice training video for Hello! Project trainee unit Rosy Chronicle, vocal coach Hidetaka Sugai showed a stern expression while putting the members through their paces, sparking discussion on a 5ch live-commentary thread. Sugai has long been known for his fiery coaching style — famously once making Reina Tanaka cry during practice — and while some in the thread worried it bordered on power harassment (“pawahara”), plenty of others were appreciative, with comments like “I’m grateful he’s coaching them for real” and “the members seem used to it by now.” Some also read it as Sugai lighting a fire under Rosy Chronicle, who currently isn’t seen as a favorite to win.

    79AnonymousSep 23, 2026 20:17
    Re: #76
Well, Reina's the one who makes Coach Sugai cry, lol

    Background and Talking Points

Hidetaka Sugai has served as a vocal coach at Hello! Project for many years, and fans have long passed around stories illustrating both his harsh and human sides — from making Reina Tanaka cry during a lesson to unexpectedly indulging a member who said she was hungry. This video appears to be a clip from a YouTube stream tied to an audition project featuring trainee unit Rosy Chronicle, and the thread title’s “as always” nods to the fact that similar scenes have sparked discussion many times before. While some in the thread worried the harshness crossed into power-harassment territory, the more common reaction was positive — comments like “proof he’s taking it seriously” and “the members aren’t even fazed” dominated. Sugai’s coaching style has become something of a running bit (“rage-fit shtick”) among fans, and the gap between first-time viewers’ reactions and longtime fans’ takes is one of the notable features of this thread.

  • More and More Middle and High Schoolers Reportedly Can’t Even Finish a 1,500m Run, Sparks Online Debate

A personal account posted on 5channel claiming that more and more middle and high schoolers can’t finish a 1,500m run during school endurance-running exercises has become a hot topic. It started as one poster’s individual observation rather than any nationwide statistic, but replies poured in citing plausible culprits: reduced exercise opportunities during the COVID pandemic, fewer places for kids to play outside, and declining participation in school clubs. At the same time, some voiced skepticism, worrying about kids’ health and saying “not being able to run 1.5km seems like a stretch.” The discussion split between doubting the premise of the story itself and hunting for underlying causes.

I'm nowhere near being a 'kid today' and even we never had that

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Japan’s Sports Agency physical fitness survey has noted a long-term decline in children’s endurance-running scores, so the thread’s general impression isn’t entirely off base. That said, readers should keep in mind that the original poster explicitly flagged the claim as having “no source” — it’s a personal anecdote, with no school names or statistics cited. The debate split into two main camps. One attributes the trend to “today’s kids not getting enough exercise,” pointing to the pandemic, fewer chances to play outside, and declining participation in school clubs. The other is more skeptical, questioning whether calling it an exaggeration to say kids can’t finish a mere 1.5km — a stance that challenges the premise of the post itself. Some also pointed out that school marathon events are disappearing, but that too is anecdotal, and the source material doesn’t let us confirm whether complaints were really the main driver.

On 5ch’s Hello! Project idol discussion board known as “Ōkami” (Wolf), a debate heated up over who the most popular member is right now. A wide range of names came up — Ebata Misaki, Gotou Hana, Danbara Ruru, Kawashima Mifuu, Yamagishi Riko, and more — with several posters pushing Ebata Misaki in particular, citing the sheer number of threads dedicated to her. On the other hand, some pointed out that thread growth isn’t purely driven by a member’s own fans posting — it’s also padded out by “hozen” (filler posts made just to keep a thread alive) and repeated spam from antis — so opinions were divided over how reply counts actually relate to real popularity.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Here, “Ōkami” (Wolf) refers to 5ch’s discussion board for Hello! Project idol groups, where the number of posts and dedicated threads devoted to a given member is often cited as a “popularity indicator.” However, thread count doesn’t necessarily reflect genuine popularity. Posts include not just messages from a member’s own fans, but also “hozen” (thread-preservation posts — repeated stock phrases used to keep a thread from dying) and spam or trolling from antis, so a high reply count doesn’t automatically mean genuine goodwill — a point that split opinion within the thread itself. Members named in the discussion, such as Ebata Misaki and Danbara Ruru, were both cited on the basis of having a large number of related threads, but whether that reflects real support or simply a tendency to attract arguments and trolling is something left up to each reader’s interpretation.

ANGERME’s Hana Goto took a taxi on her manager’s instructions and arrived at a convenience store ahead of the others. When Hashisako and Tamenaga, who had walked there, arrived afterward, Hashisako was upset that Goto had gotten there first, and a minor confrontation broke out on the spot — an episode that became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! For Hana it's more like she's just too kind-hearted
    4AnonymousSep 23, 2026 16:17
    Is this it?

Hana Goto-chan took a taxi on the manager's orders and got to the convenience store first
Hashisako and Tamenaga headed over on foot
Hana-chan thoughtfully sent a photo of matcha jelly, but Hashisako got upset — 'why is she there first?'
The moment Hashisako and the others got to the store, a fight broke out over her arriving ahead of them
Tamenaga said she was just joking, but Hana-chan's reaction showed it clearly wasn't a joke to her
Tamenaga: 'Hashisako-san didn't apologize one bit'
Hashisako: '(Goto) kept making excuses right next to me the whole time'
When Kamiko heard that Tamenaga had gone to apologize in Hana-chan's hotel room, she said, 'Hana, you go too!'

Isn't this seriously unreasonable toward Hana-chan?
    She didn't do a single thing wrong…
She still seemed upset about it even during the broadcast

Background and Key Points of This Topic

This exchange comes from members themselves looking back on the incident during a broadcast or similar, as relayed through social media and summary sites — it cannot be verified against the actual broadcast or an official statement as primary source material. The core issue boils down to how you interpret the matcha jelly photo Hana Goto sent: as a thoughtful gesture, or as bragging about arriving first. Reactions to the same event were sharply divided on the thread — opinions defending Goto were dominant, though some posters also expressed understanding for Hashisako’s reaction. Much of the discussion also proceeds from the premise that “Hello! Project groups have members with strong personalities,” but it’s worth noting this is just an impression among fans, not a substantiated fact.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Hello! Project) thread “Hana Goto-chan’s actually got a pretty level head, doesn’t she“.

  • Man in his 50s admits he can no longer feel moved by entertainment — 5ch: ‘Honestly, 50 is late to notice’

A thread on 5ch began with a poster confessing that since turning 50, movies, manga, games — basically all mainstream entertainment — now strike them as childish and unenjoyable. The poster lamented that even rewatching beloved classic films no longer stirs the same emotions it once did. Replies poured in, ranging from “my senses were already dulling by my 30s” to “that’s not aging, you’re just bored of everything.” The conversation then took a turn when one commenter argued that “if you’re really enjoying something, you should be able to explain how you enjoy it” — sparking a long back-and-forth between two participants over whether the other was genuinely enjoying entertainment at all. What began as a broader discussion of age and sensitivity gradually devolved into a personal dispute between the two.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Self-deprecating threads about “losing your sensitivity with age” pop up regularly on 5ch, and this one followed the same pattern — the general discussion about the relationship between aging and entertainment that kicked things off wrapped up early, while the back half of the thread was dominated almost entirely by an exchange between two posters, ID:AHx4Mtw50 and ID:qPUTAYfS0. Their arguments — “there’s nothing left to learn from experiencing movies or books again at this point” versus “isn’t that just a snap judgment?” — talked past each other and never converged, eventually devolving into a circular dispute over whether the other person was really enjoying entertainment or not. The original poster (ID:W67TQBmb0) also posted multiple times, and the posting history suggests this was less a generic anonymous-board debate and more an argument rooted in the OP’s own genuine frustration.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nanademo Jikkyo G) thread “It’s painful how nothing mainstream is fun anymore once you’re past 50.”

  • “Alcohol Is Just Like Drugs — It Should Be Banned Too,” 5ch Split Down the Middle

On 5ch’s Livegalileo (“Nandemo Jikkyo”) board, a post arguing “alcohol is no different from drugs, so it might as well be banned” sparked a wide-ranging debate. Opponents pointed to America’s Prohibition era (1920–33), which failed after fueling bootlegging and black markets, while supporters countered that “if you fix what caused it to fail back then, it could work this time.” The thread also touched on gradually curbing demand through tax hikes and tighter rules the way cigarettes have been handled, what to do about cooking sake, and whether home brewing should be allowed — with opinions split over where exactly to draw the line between banning, regulating, and leaving things as they are.

Do the exact same thing with alcohol. Turn bars that serve it into cage-like holding pens, and isolate the people drinking inside. When they want to leave, measure their breath, and the key-lock only releases if they're under a certain level. Not a ban — quarantine.

The reason Prohibition is called a failure comes down to two kinds of backlash: backlash from taking away a uniquely irreplaceable form of stress relief, and backlash from cutting off a funding source. The latter is like any vested-interest problem — you'd probably still see assassinations and the like over it today. As for the former, alcohol isn't a uniquely irreplaceable outlet anymore. Prohibition itself was a phenomenon specific to its era, so it's unlikely to play out the same way again.

    Re: #90
Just raise the tax on gambling too. If pachinko addicts were working instead of playing pachinko, tax revenue would go up anyway — so claw that money back from the pachinko industry instead.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The debate over whether to prohibit alcohol traces back to America’s Prohibition era (1920–33), when banning alcohol led to widespread bootlegging and turned it into a funding source for gangs — ultimately ending in failure. What divided the thread was how to read that failure: as “proof it should never be attempted again,” or as “something that could succeed this time if the causes of the original failure are eliminated.” Some suggested applying the same approach that has steadily cut cigarette consumption over the long run — tax hikes and tighter regulation — to alcohol as well, though alcohol differs from tobacco in that it’s relatively easy to brew at home and includes everyday necessities like cooking sake, so the same tactics may not transfer directly. Calls for tighter regulation also run into the problem of where legitimate public health policy ends and simply banning whatever one personally dislikes begins — a divide that surfaces again and again throughout the thread, with no agreement in sight on how far is too far.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Nandemo Jikkyo G) thread “Reiwa-era guy: “Isn’t alcohol basically the same as drugs? Might as well ban it, right?”.”

Project board. “Getting talked into buying a vase” is an old Japanese expression for so-called “spiritual sales” scams run by religious groups (con artists pressuring believers into buying overpriced “spiritually powerful” vases or seals). The thread saw posters invoking Junko Sakurada, an idol who faced similar rumors back in the 1980s, alongside surprised comments wondering whether the joke “still lands in the Reiwa era.” At the same time, the remark also pulled the conversation toward the broader social fallout from the former Unification Church, so the thread ranged from lighthearted banter to more topical exchanges.

She does seem like the type who'd be easy to brainwash.

I'm in my late 20s/early 30s, but until 'that incident' brought the Unification Church story out into the open, I had no idea that's where the 'getting talked into buying a suspicious vase' joke actually came from.

For those of us now in our late 20s/30s, the Unification Church issue was probably kept pretty well 'under control' media-wise throughout our childhood and teenage years.

    Background and Talking Points

“Getting talked into buying a vase” is a long-standing piece of Japanese slang mocking so-called “spiritual sales” (reikan shōhō) scams, in which people are pressured into buying overpriced vases or seals claimed to carry spiritual power. Several celebrities — most famously Junko Sakurada — were the subject of similar rumors decades ago. The phrase drew renewed attention in recent years after the 2022 shooting of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe brought the ties between the former Unification Church and Japanese politicians into wide public view, and several posters in the thread said that incident was when they first learned where the joke actually came from. Goto Hana’s comment was simply a self-deprecating joke about her own trusting personality, but reactions on 5ch split between people enjoying it purely as wordplay and others tying it directly to the real-world scandal — underscoring a generational gap in how the word “tsubo” (vase) is understood today. Note: comments containing political arguments or mockery of specific groups have been left out of this article.
