  • Kunihiko Mitamura’s “Otona Tabi Aruki Tabi” Ends October 3 — 5ch: “The Way He Never Gets Drunk on Sake Is Amazing”

TV Osaka’s travel program “Otona Tabi Aruki Tabi” (Adult Travel, Walking Journey) will end with its October 3 broadcast. Actor Kunihiko Mitamura, 72, has hosted the long-running show since January 2009 — 17 years and 9 months — touring around western Japan, and TV Osaka has given only “scheduling reasons” as the explanation for its end. On 5ch, reactions ranged from people who never even knew the show existed, to surprise that 72-year-old Mitamura drinks plenty of sake without ever seeming drunk, to speculation that sponsor JR West might be pulling out.

It was learned on the 31st that TV Osaka’s long-running program “Otona Tabi Aruki Tabi” (Saturdays, 6:30 p.m.), hosted by actor Kunihiko Mitamura (72) and centered on travels through western Japan, will end with its October 3 broadcast.

The popular show launched in January 2009 and is now closing the book on its history after 17 years and 9 months. The station has disclosed no reason for ending it beyond citing “scheduling reasons.”

Speaking to this paper, Mitamura offered his thanks, saying, “Thank you for watching for 18 years.” Reflecting on the many people he met while filming on location, he added, “There really were so many wonderful encounters, and I enjoyed myself the whole way through.” Looking ahead, he closed with, “I believe my ties with the people of Osaka will keep going, so I hope for your continued support.”

TV Osaka, a TV Tokyo affiliate, doesn't simulcast TV Tokyo's shows from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays — but independent stations like TV Wakayama, Nara TV, and Biwako Broadcasting do simulcast TV Tokyo programming starting at 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays.

The 7 p.m. "Ossanpo" and one other show in that slot are both popular, so I don't think they'll get swapped out.
If there's no replacement, they could just expand Ossanpo to start at 18:30 instead.
Not saying it's impossible, but I think things stay as they are for now.
If TV Tokyo forced a change to the local slot there's a slim chance, but they probably don't have that kind of leverage.

That's because the show's sponsor is JR West.
So even in places that are easier to reach via Kintetsu or Nankai lines, the on-screen map gives directions via JR West.
Though lately they've started including private-rail routes too.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“Otona Tabi Aruki Tabi” is a local program produced by TV Osaka, a TV Tokyo affiliate. Thread posters point out that while fellow affiliates TV Wakayama, Nara TV, and Biwako Broadcasting all simulcast TV Tokyo’s programming in the same Saturday 6:30 p.m. slot, TV Osaka alone has kept running its own independent lineup. The fact that the show’s on-screen maps directed viewers via JR West stations even in places closer to Kintetsu or Nankai lines was because JR West had long been the sponsor — which has fed the theory that “maybe it’s ending because JR is dropping sponsorship.” However, TV Osaka has only cited “scheduling reasons” for the end, and the official announcement gives no indication of whether the sponsor’s withdrawal was the direct cause. Some posters also noted that ratings hadn’t been bad, so the concrete reasons behind the show’s ending remain unclear.

  • Kyoko Yoshine Reveals She Developed a Rare Disease in Middle School — a Condition Affecting Just 1-2 in 100,000 People a Year

During Nippon TV’s “24-Hour Television 49” charity broadcast (aired August 29-30), charity partner and actress Kyoko Yoshine (29) revealed that back in her second year of middle school, she was diagnosed with a rare disease said to affect only 1-2 people per 100,000 each year. The revelation reportedly came during a VTR segment covering a girl battling childhood cancer and her family. On 5channel, the thread sprawled in several directions — reactions to the confession itself, speculation over what disease she actually had, her career as an actress, and comparisons with actresses of her generation.

Fighting spirit! Fighting spirit! Fighting spirit! (a famous catchphrase from past 24-Hour TV appearances)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Given the nature of “24-Hour Television,” illness confessions on the show tend to draw criticism for “commodifying emotion,” and this time was no exception, with some posters voicing skepticism toward the charity program itself. The most-discussed topic in the thread was pinning down exactly what disease she had — many guessed Guillain-Barré syndrome, but it’s worth noting this is speculation from commenters, not something confirmed by the show or the article itself. The thread also touched on Japan’s “designated intractable disease” system, under which the main criterion is the lack of an established cure — meaning some conditions can be delisted depending on how mild or severe cases tend to run. Again, this is general chatter from the thread rather than an official statement from any medical authority. Kyoko Yoshine, an actress who has previously starred in an NHK morning drama, used this appearance as an opportunity to speak publicly about her own experience with illness.

  • Hiroyuki’s “Where Does Japan Rank in the Birth Lottery?” Comment Sparks Debate

Hiroyuki appeared on YouTube on the 29th and answered a viewer’s question about “what percentile Japan ranks in as a birth lottery (kokugacha),” saying that in Japan people rarely starve to death or get killed just for being alive. The remark, reported on the 29th, set off a 5ch thread where posters first split over how to read the crime statistics — is public safety actually improving or getting worse — before the discussion branched out into Japan’s middling world happiness rankings, the quality of its tap water, and the realities of homelessness and “net cafe refugees.” One camp argued that “good numbers don’t mean much if happiness is low,” while the other insisted “you should go by statistics, not gut feeling.”

They can't afford the deposit and key money (upfront non-refundable fees required to rent in Japan). On top of that, no guarantor either.
Working day-labor or temp jobs, their pay barely covers living costs, so they can't save up enough for the deposit and key money.
Do the math on a net cafe and it comes to about ¥60,000 a month, including breakfast, drinks, showers, internet, the NHK fee, and cleaning.

This is basically the answer on happiness.
The more people who feel a big sense of inequality, the lower happiness drops.
And that "inequality" isn't really about money — a big part of it comes down to whether you feel connected to anyone.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

According to National Police Agency statistics, Japan’s homicide rate sits at its lowest level since WWII, and the mismatch between the gut feeling that “public safety is worsening” and the actual statistical trend is a recurring point of debate — the same split showed up in this thread. At the same time, Japan consistently ranks around 50th in the UN’s World Happiness Report each year, and the fact that economic security and subjective happiness don’t necessarily line up came up as a separate angle from the crime-rate argument. One thing readers might misread is that “kokugacha” (“country gacha,” or birth lottery) is slang for talking about the disparities created by which country you happen to be born into — Hiroyuki’s comment wasn’t meant as unconditional praise of Japan, but as an answer about one aspect of its relative safety. The thread did veer off into topics like immigration policy and other political tangents, but this article focuses specifically on reactions to the “kokugacha” remark itself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Hiroyuki: What percentile does Japan rank at as a “country gacha”? “You don’t starve to death, and you’re rarely killed just for being alive”.”

  • WEST. Members Ryusei Fujii & Nozomu Kotaki to Leave the Group — 5ch: “LOL, Now It’s an All-Married-Guys Group”

On August 30, STARTO ENTERTAINMENT announced that Ryusei Fujii and Nozomu Kotaki will be leaving the seven-member group WEST. How the remaining five members will continue is “still under discussion,” and the group’s planned seven-member festival appearance has been cancelled. What caught the thread’s attention wasn’t so much the departure timeline as the surprising makeup behind it: four of the seven members are already married, and the two leaving are actually the unmarried, younger ones. Comments like “LOL, now it’s an all-married group” piled up, and the discussion branched into comparisons with the married/single status of other idol groups, plus casual chatter about who these members would correspond to in Nogizaka46.

    Background and Key Points

WEST., a seven-member group under STARTO ENTERTAINMENT (formerly Johnny’s Office), traces back to KANSAI Johnny’s Jr., formed in 2004, and debuted in 2014. Four of the seven members (Shigeoka, Hamada, Kamiyama, and Kiriyama) are already married, and if you include Nakama, who has been reported to have a girlfriend, that leaves Fujii and Kotaki as the only two who are single. In idol culture, the usual pattern is for a member to graduate or leave the group once they get married — but this time it’s the opposite: the two unmarried, younger members are the ones leaving, while the married members stay on, which is what drew the thread’s attention. The specific circumstances and timing of the departure have only been described as “under discussion,” and readers should keep in mind that the speculation on 5ch (about romance, marriage, etc.) has not been officially confirmed as fact.

  • Taiga Drama ‘Toyotomi Brothers’: Net Reacts to Lady Oichi and Katsuie’s Death Scene — A Dive from the Castle Tower

Episode 33 of NHK’s taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!”, titled “Farewell at Kitanosho Castle,” aired on August 30, depicting the deaths of Lady Oichi (played by Miyazaki Aoi) and Shibata Katsuie (played by Yamaguchi Makiya). The scene of the two holding hands and leaping from the nine-story castle tower sparked a huge reaction online, spreading a wave of "Oichi & Katsuie withdrawal" among fans. Discussion on 5ch ranged widely — from claims that Oichi didn’t actually commit seppuku in real history, to gripes that the staging felt abrupt given the tower’s height, to jokes comparing the scene to Lamba Ral from the anime “Gundam,” to evaluations of the cast’s acting (including Nakano Taiga and Ikematsu Sosuke), and even debates over the limits of historical-accuracy consulting.

NHK’s taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!” (Sundays at 8:00 PM), starring actor Nakano Taiga (33), aired episode 33, “Farewell at Kitanosho Castle,” on the 30th, depicting the deaths of Oda Nobunaga’s sister Oichi and his senior retainer Shibata Katsuie — roles skillfully played by actress Miyazaki Aoi (40) and actor Yamaguchi Makiya (53). Online, a wave of "Oichi & Katsuie withdrawal" spread, sparking a huge response.

    Nah, Oichi didn't commit seppuku.
Seppuku is brutally painful and grueling.
It's something samurai did to demonstrate strength of will —
not something women of samurai households did, since they weren't samurai themselves.

Hidenaga dies while Chacha's first son is still alive

The Hidetsugu incident happens after that child dies and Hideyori is born
so it's several years after Hidenaga's death

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

The main tower of Kitanosho Castle, where Shibata Katsuie made his last stand, is said to have had nine stories — larger in scale than Azuchi Castle. Regarding the deaths of Katsuie and Oichi, the missionary Luís Fróis left a detailed account, including an anecdote that an old woman was allowed to escape in order to give eyewitness testimony. Meanwhile, the role of historical consultants on taiga dramas is limited to flagging inaccuracies in the script — the decision of whether to actually act on their input rests with NHK and the screenwriters — so it isn’t unusual for a consultant to later reveal at a talk event, after broadcast, that “I objected to that scene.” Opinions in the thread split between those who found the staging acceptable (“fine if the embellishment works in a good direction”) and those who found leaping from a nine-story tower unnatural, as well as over the cast’s acting. On the historical side, some pointed out that Oichi didn’t actually commit seppuku, explaining that seppuku was samurai etiquette and that women of samurai households customarily took their own lives by other means. Underlying it all is a debate common to taiga dramas in general: how far to separate dramatic embellishment from historical fact in order to enjoy the show.

Everyone’s waiting for you!” Date has appeared alongside Uchimura on Nippon TV’s “THE Toppa File,” and was reportedly scheduled to take part in this segment as a member of the “Toppa Cheer Squad.” Reactions on 5ch were divided — some welcomed the shoutout, while others asked “Is it really appropriate to give a personal show of support on an unrelated program?” and “Shouldn’t disaster relief support come first?”

    August 30, 2026, 6:34 PM

Nippon TV’s annual summer charity program “24-Hour Television 49 — Love Saves the Earth —” was broadcast live on the 30th from Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. General host Michihiro Uchimura of “Uchan Nanchan,” who has appeared alongside Sandwichman’s Mikio Date on the network’s “THE Toppa File,” sent a cheer to Date, who is currently on hiatus due to a stroke.

Backed by the “Toppa Cheer Squad,” Uchimura pumped his right fist and shouted, “Go, go, Hoshino! Fight, fight, Japan! Go, go, Date! Everyone’s waiting for you!”

Well, that's true for mild cases.
When I was hospitalized for a vascular bypass surgery, a stroke patient who got rushed in late at night was actually pretty mild on the case scale. But there was another patient in the ICU whose relatives
kept showing up in droves to cheer him on
and overhearing that from the next bed, I remember thinking, "yeah, this one's not gonna make it."

    Background and Points of Debate

Sandwichman’s Mikio Date has appeared alongside Michihiro Uchimura on Nippon TV’s “THE Toppa File,” but officially, no detailed information has been released about the severity of the condition behind his stroke-related hiatus. On the thread, posters traded guesses about whether it’s the type that leaves lasting after-effects or whether it was caught at a mild stage — but these remain baseless speculation either way. Opinions were also split over whether it’s appropriate to offer a personal well-wishing gesture within a charity fundraising program like 24-Hour Television, and over how that should be weighed against other causes like disaster relief support. Worth noting: this shoutout was an extension of a segment Uchimura and Date have long appeared in together, not a spur-of-the-moment idea.

  • Masahiko Kondo responds to “feud” rumors with Toshihiko Tahara: “We used to live together, remember?” — 5ch: “The Tanokin alumni are still close”

Masahiko Kondo (62) appeared on comedian Tsutomu Sekine’s YouTube channel, updated August 29, and was asked point-blank about rumors of a “feud” with Toshihiko Tahara (65). Kondo replied, “Come on, we used to live together,” pointing back to the days of the Tanokin Trio, when the three of them shared meals and lodging at a Johnny’s dormitory. On the thread, users posted images showing Kondo and Tahara meeting up privately — contrary to the rumored feud — and the discussion turned into a nostalgic trip down memory lane about how much the third member, Yoshio Nomura, shows up at these gatherings these days, plus nicknames and stories from their Tanokin era. Meanwhile, opinions split on a side debate comparing the dance skills of different generations.

    "Match"
Back in his junior days, Kondo was at the dormitory one day when Hideki Matsubara — who was also the dorm head — asked him to do a party trick. Kondo rubbed his head against the floor shouting "Match!" as an impression, and it was a huge hit. From then on, Matsubara started calling him "Matchbou" (matchstick).
Over time "bou" got dropped, and the nickname settled into just "Match."
The commonly told version — that Matsubara named him "Matchbou" because as a Johnny's Jr. Kondo was skinny with short, small-looking hair, so from a distance he looked like a matchstick — is actually a misunderstanding on Kondo's own part.

Background and Key Points of This Story

The Tanokin Trio was a three-member act — Toshihiko Tahara, Masahiko Kondo, and Yoshio Nomura — launched by Johnny’s Office around 1980, and it’s well known that all three lived communally in a dormitory at the time. Kondo’s remark is thought to be a reference to that period. Opinion on the thread split over two things: how much Yoshio Nomura actually turns up at these reunion-style get-togethers, and the generational gap over whether their era’s dancing should be judged by today’s standards. The former is backed up by photo evidence of sightings, while the latter remains an unresolved clash of pure opinion. There were also several posts touching on the sexual abuse committed by Johnny Kitagawa — worth noting that this isn’t a rumor but an established fact, since the agency has since investigated it, officially acknowledged it, and compensated those who were affiliated with it at the time.

Others, however, defended the reservation system as a way to keep out trolls and inconsiderate users, while some praised the effort given how much of a burden it must be to run — leaving opinion split.

What matters most in running a kids' cafeteria is accepting children from any kind of family. If you only bring together kids from poor households, it can turn into bullying. Since it might hurt kids' pride, wealthy kids should be able to eat for free too.

    Re: #185
That'd actually be great — a "grandpa and grandma cafeteria." It might be needed even more than kids' cafeterias. Though running it sounds like a total pain lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Children’s cafeterias are a grassroots movement that spread nationwide starting around 2012, with most run on limited volunteer labor, food supplies, and venue costs, typically operating only one to four times a month. What split opinion in this thread was whether that low frequency is “pointless” or “enough just to keep it sustainable” — a structural issue common to children’s cafeterias in general, not unique to this one. It’s also worth noting that children’s cafeterias originally began not so much as poverty support but as community gathering spots for local kids, and there’s a persistent argument that narrowing down who’s eligible to use them can actually invite prejudice and isolation. While a celebrity’s involvement raises the profile of these cafeterias, how to weigh the practical burden and sustainability of running one is a question that comes up with celebrity charity work in general.

Former TBS announcer and actress Mina Tanaka (39) appeared on the 29th on TBS Radio’s “Gas One Presents: Mina Tanaka’s Warm Time” (Saturdays at 6:30 PM), which she hosts.

She revealed the change in environment that came with moving from Otsuma Women’s High School to Aoyama Gakuin University.

If I were a handsome guy who got too popular, I'd probably end up distrusting women too

Realistically, getting fawned over like that is bound to warp you somehow
I think it's hard for a beautiful woman to grow up without getting a bit twisted by it

It really depends on what a parent with real-life experience tells you
I was super popular too, but my parents just left me to my own devices, so I stayed passive and made the wrong choices
Unless you're sharp and level-headed about it, being popular doesn't guarantee happiness

Being good-looking is a pain because people you have zero interest in fall for you, and the jealousy is exhausting
Delinquent types (yankī) especially — if the person they like falls for someone else, they get jealous of that other person and start harassing or bullying them
    12AnonymousAug 30, 2026 09:35
Getting turned down after confessing and then going around calling her a nasty person — I just don't get that mentality.

Probably just bad at turning people down.
Realistically, if you reject someone bluntly, you come off as cold.

Well, she'd just started as a freshman and was probably fed up with being targeted all the time.

I had a friend who was insanely popular, and there are types who go "I liked him first, who does she think she is flirting with him?"
She's married and living happily now, but she had very few friends for a long time… which is probably why she still hangs out with someone like me
    30AnonymousAug 30, 2026 09:40
She's probably disliked, especially by other women

I know someone who was her classmate in high school, and apparently she had a great personality, was funny, smart, and considerate — a real popular kid
Since it was an all-girls school, she wasn't a target of weird jealousy
But if she was popular with guys in college, jealousy must have made things rough
Women can get unbelievably aggressive toward someone who's popular with men, and the gossip — true or not — gets brutal

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Mina Tanaka is a former TBS announcer who went from Otsuma Women’s High School to Aoyama Gakuin University. Her comment this time, “Being popular is such a hassle,” is a primary statement made on her own radio show, reflecting on her sense of hitting a popularity peak amid the shift from an all-girls school to a coed university. In the thread, comments split between those sympathizing with the “struggles of being popular” and those who felt it came across as bragging, with opinions divided over whether to view her popularity as a matter of her own qualities or as a matter of jealousy from those around her. Regarding her high school relationships, the thread also contains contradictory claims side by side — one from someone claiming to know a former classmate who says she was popular, and another rumor claiming she was actually isolated — both of which are unconfirmed, secondhand information that readers should keep in mind. While the radio comment itself is a primary source, the posts about her school-days episodes should be read with the understanding that they are unverified hearsay.

  • Angerme’s Autumn Tour NHK Osaka Show: Ground-Floor Seats Still Up for Grabs Right After General Sale Opens

Tickets for Hello! Project idol group Angerme’s NHK Osaka Hall show, part of their autumn hall tour, went on general sale — and the fact that ground-floor seats were still selectable on the seat map right from the start became a hot topic on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. The thread noted the venue holds around 1,000 seats for the matinee and about 700 for the evening show, which kicked off comparisons with the venue sizes of other groups like Morning Musume。, OCHA NORMA, and Juice=Juice, with posters disagreeing over which group suits which venue.

    Re: #194
It's basically common knowledge among Hello! Project fans that shows handled by every site at once — Pia, eplus, and Lawson Ticket — barely sell, while shows handled by only one site are basically cleared out through the fan-club presale
For Angerme, the Wako show sold out in the first FC presale round so it's only on eplus now, whereas NHK Osaka is being handled by every site, which is why tickets are sitting around unsold

Background and key points of this discussion

When it comes to ticket sales through Japanese play-guide platforms, shows handled simultaneously by multiple sites — Pia, eplus, Lawson Ticket, and so on — tend to show more visible open seats on the seat map even after general sale opens. Shows that sell out entirely through fan-club presales never go to general sale and end up listed on just one site. So the thread’s take that “handled by multiple sites = unpopular” really just reflects how the seat map happens to look, not actual total attendance or sell-through rates. It’s also worth noting that monthly listener counts on services like Spotify and live-show attendance are separate metrics, so direct comparisons should be made with caution. The back-and-forth in the thread is driven mainly by rivalry between different groups’ fans, and no official sales figures were actually cited — worth keeping in mind while reading.
