  • Sandwichman’s Mikio Date Hospitalized After Stroke — Risk Factors Include High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Smoking, and Obesity

Mikio Date (51), one half of the comedy duo Sandwichman, has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for a stroke, his talent agency announced on its official website on August 28. The diagnosis came after he complained of feeling unwell and underwent tests; thanks to swift action from medical staff, his condition didn’t become serious. On the forum, discussion centered on the risk factors named in the announcement — high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity — with many pointing to his long history as a heavy smoker and others urging better exercise and diet. Still, some argued it ultimately comes down to “luck and genetics,” splitting opinion on how much of health is really within one’s own control.

What is the stroke Sandwichman’s Mikio Date suffered from… risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity

Sandwichman’s Mikio Date (51) has been hospitalized and is undergoing treatment for a stroke, according to an announcement on the official website on the 28th. He will reportedly take time off to focus fully on treatment for now.

The announcement was addressed “To our fans and everyone involved,” and stated: “Mikio Date of Sandwichman, who belongs to our agency, recently complained of feeling unwell, underwent tests at a hospital, and was diagnosed with a stroke.” It went on to explain the current situation: “Thanks to the swift response of the medical staff, fortunately it did not become serious, and he is currently receiving inpatient treatment.” He will focus on treatment and rest for the time being.

Date's a heavy smoker — two packs a day. Apparently he'd cut back over the last few years, but he was still going through a pack every two days.

'Reading Diet,' by Genichiro Takahashi, Part 1

    https://www.php.co.jp/atch_books_ogp.php?9784569905372.jpg

The health book in question is 'The Art of Living Long' (lit. 'The Method Against Illness: The Power of Eating Very Little') by Luigi Cornaro (translated and annotated by Genki Nakakura, PHP Institute).

The author of this book is Luigi Cornaro, a Venetian nobleman from Renaissance Italy.
For reference, Cornaro was born in 1464 and died in 1566 — meaning he lived to the age of 102.
Coming from someone who lived that long, the health advice carries maximum credibility.

Being a nobleman, Cornaro spent his younger years indulging in excessive eating and drinking.
As a result, his body fell apart, and by his 40s he was hovering near death.

His doctors told him he had little time left to live as he was, and that his only hope of survival was to drastically cut back on what he ate.
Cornaro did exactly as told — and remarkably, he recovered his health and went on to live past the age of 100.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and blood flow to the brain stops. The risk factors named in the official announcement — high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity — are all medically recognized as major contributors to arteriosclerosis. On the thread, many commenters focused on smoking as the likely primary cause, but it’s worth noting that this reflects speculation among 5ch users rather than any actual information about Date’s smoking habits — the official announcement didn’t specify this. On the topic of exercise, the discussion pushed back against the simple idea that “walking makes you healthy”: some pointed out that walking alone does little for weight loss if your diet doesn’t change, while others noted cases of knee and heel injuries from excessive walking, raising the point that both exercise and diet need to be addressed together. A trivia comment claiming that “the average life expectancy in the frugal-eating Edo period was only in the 30s-40s” also came up, but this is a commonly misread figure — it’s heavily skewed downward by high infant mortality, and needs to be considered separately from actual adult lifespans at the time.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “What is the stroke Sandwichman’s Mikio Date suffered from… risk factors include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and obesity.”

  • Sandwichman’s Tomizawa Explains Date’s Hospitalization: ‘He Said “I Can’t Talk” at Our Morning Meeting’ — ‘I Told Him to Get to a Hospital Now’

On the August 29 live radio broadcast, Sandwichman’s Takeshi Tomizawa explained the circumstances behind his comedy partner Mikio Date’s hospitalization for a stroke (脳梗塞, cerebral infarction), which forced Date to pause his activities the day before. According to Tomizawa, when the pair met up that morning, Date himself said, “Something’s wrong, I can’t talk,” and Tomizawa immediately told him to go to the hospital, where he was admitted on the spot. Tomizawa shared that they’ve been exchanging messages and that Date is “doing fine both mentally and physically,” offering some reassurance — but on 5ch, users focused on what kind of treatment he’s receiving, pointed out that strokes tend to recur, and voiced concern about the dietary changes he’ll likely need going forward.

Takeshi Tomizawa of the comedy duo Sandwichman appeared on the 29th on the live broadcast of Nippon Broadcasting’s “Sandwichman the Radio Show Saturday,” the program he co-hosts with his partner. He addressed the news that his partner, Mikio Date, had paused his activities the previous day, the 28th, due to a stroke.

Date is currently hospitalized and undergoing treatment. Explaining the circumstances, Tomizawa said, “I was working that day, and in the morning when we met up, [Date] said, ‘Something’s wrong, I can’t talk,’ so I told him, ‘Get to a hospital right now,’ and he went, and I guess he was admitted right there.” He said the two have been exchanging messages frequently and reported that Date is “doing really well, both mentally and physically.”

They insert a tube called a catheter through your thigh, then place a device called a stent at the spot where the blood vessel is blocked, and use it to widen the vessel.

The blood vessel is already damaged, so the goal is to make the current state last as long as possible. If needed they'll widen it with a catheter, and after that it's ongoing maintenance and monitoring — the start of a long relationship with your doctor.

Hideki Saijo had multiple strokes too. Scary to think that even with a physique like his it still happened — makes "zero calorie" claims kind of terrifying.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

A stroke (cerebral infarction) occurs when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel and cuts off blood flow; in the acute phase, treatment commonly involves catheter-based clot removal or placing a stent to restore circulation. Within the thread, opinions differed over what Date meant by saying he “couldn’t talk” — whether it meant he was literally unable to make sounds, or whether it referred to a speech impairment such as slurred or difficult speech, and reactions to the news varied accordingly. Strokes are also known to recur, and since singer Hideki Saijo passed away after suffering multiple strokes, some commenters took a more cautious view, saying Tomizawa’s description of Date as “doing fine” shouldn’t necessarily be taken at face value. Going forward, Date is expected to need a major overhaul of his diet centered on limiting salt and fat.

At a food stall run by “fighting chef” Komeo’s restaurant “Kappo Komeo” during Tokyo’s Azabu-Juban Summer Festival on August 22-23, numerous customers who ate the chilled crab ramen fell ill. According to the Minato Public Health Center, 76 people had reported fever, diarrhea, and vomiting as of the 28th, and the case is being investigated as a mass food poisoning outbreak. On 5ch, footage from the stall sparked accusations of bare-handed food handling and poor hygiene management, while others speculated the pre-made soup — rather than the crab itself — was to blame, leaving opinions split over the actual cause.

If it's business waste, you pay a disposal fee no matter the amount.

Background and key points of this story

Under the Food Sanitation Act, when 50 or more people fall ill from the same cause, public health centers are required to report it up through the prefecture to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare — meaning the figure of 76 is well above that threshold. Komeo is known as a “fighting chef” who moved into the restaurant business after serving time for robbery, and his past has repeatedly come up in the thread. The restaurant has stated that “the product itself was not reused,” but this statement refers only to already-served food, not to the ingredients or soup base used in preparation. Commenters raised several parallel possibilities — a soy-milk-based corn soup, gloves reused on camera, and water that never reached a boil — and it remains a common misunderstanding that the crab itself has been confirmed as the cause. The health center’s final investigation results have not yet been released.

On 5ch’s Nyuusoku VIP board, the weekly quiz event “TV Grand Prix” held its 10th anniversary special. The quizmaster, a regular posting under the fixed handle “Rx,” ran a buzzer-style quiz about TV shows and celebrities starting at 9:24 PM and running past midnight. That same night, the 24-Hour Television telethon was airing, and the thread title notes this was staged as counter-programming against it. Scores were tallied under a three-chance system (1st place: 3pts, 2nd: 2pts, 3rd: 1pt), with regulars trading banter and reminiscing about the livelier VIP board of years past.

    Background and Talking Points

“TV Grand Prix” is a long-running buzzer-quiz tradition on 5ch’s VIP board, hosted periodically by a regular quizmaster under a fixed handle — this installment marks its 10th anniversary. The thread’s title comes from the fact that it ran on a Saturday night overlapping with the 24-Hour Television broadcast, staged as counter-programming against it. The quizmaster also revealed that a weather-map question had been self-written with help from AI, hinting at how the event’s production has evolved over the past decade. At the same time, comments like “these days even the side-splitting threads don’t properly take off anymore” reflect a certain nostalgia among participants for a livelier VIP board of the past. There was also an exchange suggesting a regular participant, “◆MEGANEw1Wc,” was going for a first win in 8 years but fell short — a moment that captures the atmosphere of this long-running regular community. Note that the eventual overall winner and the full results of every question aren’t included in the excerpted portion of the thread covered here.

  • Taiga Drama ‘Toyotomi Brothers!’ Draws Protest From Taketa City Over Nakagawa Kiyohide Portrayal — 5ch: “Sticking to the Facts Wouldn’t Be Fun”

In NHK’s taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both linked to Sengoku-era warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide, said to have fought bravely and died in battle at Shizugatake — jointly sent NHK a written statement on the 28th protesting that the show’s portrayal is “far removed from historical fact.” The drama reportedly shows Kiyohide attempting to betray Hideyoshi before begging for his life, a major departure from the accepted account that has stirred controversy. On 5ch threads, opinions split over how much dramatic license should be tolerated — defenders saying “it’s fiction, so it can’t be helped,” versus critics arguing “turning a warlord who died in battle into a traitor is going too far.”

    8/29 (Sat) 11:00 — Oita Godo Shimbun

Regarding the portrayal of Sengoku warlord Nakagawa Kiyohide in NHK’s currently airing taiga drama “Toyotomi Brothers!,” Taketa City in Oita Prefecture and Ibaraki City in Osaka Prefecture — both connected to Kiyohide — jointly sent a written statement to NHK on the 28th, saying the depiction is “far removed from historical fact” and that they “cannot help but feel regret.” While acknowledging that dramatic staging and embellishment fall under “freedom of expression,” the two cities asked that “works based on historical subjects respect accurate historical fact as much as possible.”

Kiyohide was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain, which included present-day Taketa City. He was also castellan of Ibaraki Castle, located in what is now Ibaraki City. In the 1583 Battle of Shizugatake, where Hashiba (later Toyotomi) Hideyoshi defeated Shibata Katsuie, Kiyohide fought on Hideyoshi’s side. He defended the Oiwayama fort but is said to have died in battle after being attacked by Shibata’s general Sakuma Morimasa.

Besides, a period drama that's faithful to historical fact would be boring anyway —

Well, what history tells us is ultimately just what can be read out of surviving records —
we won't know what really happened unless someone invents a time machine,
so I think some degree of dramatic license in a drama is fine.

But when a warlord who, by the accepted account, fought bravely to the end and died in battle
gets turned into someone who begged for his life and betrayed his lord — that's a bit much.
It's only natural for people connected to him to think, "why drag his name through the mud like that?"

It's not even a part that affects the main thrust of the drama's story much,
so it's a mystery why they threw in this unnecessary change.

    Re: #736

It's probably so that holding the line until Hideyoshi's return could be credited entirely to Hidenaga, and to make Maeda's betrayal look milder by comparison.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Nakagawa Kiyohide is a warlord said to have defended the Oiwayama fort at the Battle of Shizugatake and died in battle after being attacked by Sakuma Morimasa’s forces; he was the father of Nakagawa Hidenari, first lord of the Oka Domain. The drama reportedly depicts a scene in which Kiyohide tries to betray Hideyoshi, then begs for his life before being killed — a major departure from the accepted account of him “dying in battle after fighting bravely.” Opinions split in the thread over how much dramatic license should be allowed in a taiga drama, with the debate centering on whether the change touches the honor of a real historical figure. Past taiga dramas have included plenty of invented material too — such as the circumstances of Azai Nagamasa’s death — but changes that contradict documented achievements tend to draw backlash from those connected to the figure involved. Some also pointed out that records show Kiyohide’s descendants received an increase in fief from Hideyoshi in recognition of his achievements at Shizugatake, casting doubt on the “betrayal” theory.

  • Hakata Daikichi Slams “Kita no Kuni Kara” Lead as “I Really Hate Him” — Hanamaru Agrees

On the August 27 broadcast of BS Asahi’s “Ie-nomi Kadai,” Daikichi of the comedy duo Hakata Hanamaru & Daikichi sparked buzz by declaring he “really hates” the main character of Fuji TV’s classic drama Kita no Kuni Kara (“From the Northern Country”), calling him “way too selfish” — with Hanamaru agreeing. In the resulting thread on 5channel’s Geinou/Sports News+ board, users debated the show, now more than 40 years since it first aired, from every angle: whether the one-off specials or the original serialized drama are better, how to tell the characters apart, the pervasive sense of hopelessness running through the story, and how odd the series looks to actual Hokkaido residents.

Hakata Hanamaru (56) and Hakata Daikichi (55), of the comedy duo Hakata Hanamaru & Daikichi, appeared on the August 27 broadcast of BS Asahi’s “Ie-nomi Kadai” (Thursdays at 10:00 p.m.). During the show, the pair had some choice words for Fuji TV’s classic drama Kita no Kuni Kara.

Since August 27, the day of the broadcast, happened to be “Otoko wa Tsurai yo Day,” the conversation turned to Mitsuo — the nephew of Tora-san, the hero played by the late Kiyoshi Atsumi in the beloved film series Otoko wa Tsurai yo (“It’s Tough Being a Man”) — and from there to Hidetaka Yoshioka (56), the actor who played Mitsuo.

    Background and Discussion Points

Kita no Kuni Kara (“From the Northern Country”) is a landmark work by screenwriter Sō Kuramoto that began as a serialized drama in 1981, followed by a string of one-off specials produced intermittently through 1992; it’s known for tackling heavy themes like poverty, infidelity, and family strife. In the thread, opinions split over whether the show is “emotionally manipulative” or “a hopeless, unflinchingly real portrait of human nature,” with some pointing out that the tone shifted between the early serialized drama and the later specials. Hokkaido residents also chimed in, saying the idyllic, city-eyed view of rural Hokkaido the show presents feels off to anyone who actually lives there — a sign that even decades after it first aired, opinions on the show remain far from unified. Posters also spent time correcting each other’s memories of characters like Sota and Shokichi, giving the thread the lively feel typical of a long-running series’ fandom.

  • Former Morning Musume Member Koharu Kusumi, 34, Undergoes Cataract Surgery — 5ch: ‘My Classmate Had It Done at 14’

Koharu Kusumi (34), a former member of Morning Musume and now an actress, revealed on her Instagram Stories that she underwent surgery on her left eye for cataracts. Cataracts are widely associated with aging, but it’s not unusual for cases to appear at a young age due to factors like UV exposure, genetics, or atopic dermatitis. On 5ch, threads lit up with surprise at her developing the condition at 34, alongside a stream of stories about early-onset cases — “my classmate had surgery at 14,” “I had surgery myself in ninth grade because of genetics.” The discussion also turned to comparing how painful cataract surgery is versus retinal detachment surgery, and to a lively debate over whether 34 even counts as “young.”

It's like there's a thin sheet of gauze in front of your eyes — everything looks white.

If the clouding starts from the outer edge of the lens, then when your pupil shrinks (say, from bright light) you stop using the clouded part, so apparently it gets easier to see at that point.

With the atopic type, the clouding reportedly starts from the center, so when the pupil shrinks you end up only using the clouded area — meaning everything in front of you turns totally white.

The real hell isn't cataract surgery — it's retinal detachment surgery.

They jab an anesthetic needle straight into your eyeball, suck out the contents, then laser-burn the retina on the back wall of the eye.
And since it's just local anesthesia, you're obviously still conscious the whole time.

After surgery, you have to stay face-down — literally with your face in a toilet-seat-shaped cushion — for two weeks straight until the eye naturally refills itself.

I googled "partial vision loss" based on what you said.
You should probably get to a hospital sooner rather than later.

    Likely causes to consider:
    Glaucoma:
A condition where the nerves inside the eye get damaged, gradually narrowing the field of vision. It often progresses with no noticeable symptoms and is the #1 cause of blindness in Japan.

    Retinal detachment:
A condition where the light-sensing retina peels away. Vision can suddenly go missing in patches, or look like a black curtain has dropped over part of your view.

Brain conditions: Stroke or brain tumors can also cause part of the visual field to disappear.
    261AnonymousAug 29, 2026 23:50
    Re: #251
If it's been going on for a year, it's probably glaucoma. With the other conditions, it would've gotten dramatically worse fast once you noticed.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cataracts occur when the eye’s lens turns cloudy, and while aging is generally cited as the main cause, medical reports also document cases appearing in people’s teens or thirties due to UV exposure, genetics, atopic dermatitis, or congenital factors. Developing cataracts at 34 is unusual, but not an impossible age for it. In the thread, surprise at how young she was mixed with posters sharing their own or their family’s early-onset stories, turning the exchange into more of an information swap than an argument. Posters also noted that the hallmark symptom of cataracts is the entire field of vision looking hazy or white, whereas losing just part of your vision points more toward a different condition like glaucoma or retinal detachment — several warned against confusing the two. It was also mentioned that regular checkups don’t necessarily halt the progression itself, underscoring how important it is to correctly identify which type of symptom you’re actually dealing with.

Mikio Date (51), one half of the comedy duo Sandwichman, has suspended his entertainment activities after suffering a stroke (cerebral infarction). On August 26, it was announced that he would be pulling out of a concert appearance, and on the 28th his talent agency, Grape Company, revealed the reason for his hiatus on its official website. According to the announcement, Date had been reporting unusual symptoms for about six months — daily nosebleeds, trouble focusing his eyes, and his wife pointing out that “his complexion looked bad.” It also emerged that back in June his comedy partner Takeshi Tomizawa had urged him, “Go see a doctor already!” On 5ch’s “Geinou Sokuho+” (entertainment news) board, users compared his case to celebrities who died of stroke or brain hemorrhage in the past, and debated blood pressure management and lifestyle habits.

Mikio Date (51) of Sandwichman had been scheduled to appear as “Yorozu Mikio” at the Tokyo performance of “Chieko Mizutani’s Utage Join Concert 2026” on August 27. However, the day before, on the 26th, it was announced that he would be withdrawing from the show due to poor health.

“Date had also missed the broadcast of the radio show ‘Sandwichman the Radio Show Saturday’ (Nippon Broadcasting System) on the 22nd due to poor health. But no specifics — whether it was illness or injury — were ever disclosed, leaving even people close to him with no choice but to wait and watch,” said one entertainment industry insider.

As concern over Date’s health spread, his talent agency, Grape Company, announced the reason for his hiatus on its official website on the 28th.

Saijo had a stroke and died of multiple organ failure, but the underlying cause was never made public.
Even when someone dies of multiple organ failure stemming from a stroke, the death certificate just lists the immediate cause of death as "multiple organ failure" —
it doesn't record what actually caused the stroke in the first place (diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, etc.).

My diastolic (lower number) blood pressure has been over 100 for ages, what should I do?

If that's your systolic (top number), 100 is basically ideal.

Haha, only a total space-case could pull that off (the line is a bit garbled in the original).

Background and key points of this discussion

A stroke (cerebral infarction) occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and cuts off blood flow to the brain; it often strikes suddenly with no clear warning signs, and it’s said that plenty of people are walking around with small, symptomless infarctions without realizing it. In the thread, some users speculated that Date’s daily nosebleeds and inability to focus his eyes were rooted in high blood pressure, while others weighed in to distinguish his case from that of Hideki Saijo, who died of a stroke, and Shinya Hashimoto, who died suddenly of a brainstem hemorrhage — though the article itself doesn’t make clear that stroke, brain hemorrhage, and brainstem hemorrhage, while all cerebrovascular conditions, differ in cause and severity. The symptoms and timeline described here come from the agency’s announcement and tabloid reporting; the specific diagnosis, test results, and whether he was hospitalized have not been disclosed. Regarding the fact that he reportedly had been feeling unwell for about six months, opinions split between those criticizing the delay in seeking treatment and those who felt that managing one’s own health is ultimately a personal responsibility.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (“Geinou Sokuho+”) thread “[Suspends Activities Due to Stroke] Sandwichman’s Date — Daily Nosebleeds, Unfocused Eyes, Wife Noted ‘Bad Complexion’… The ‘Physical Abnormalities’ He’d Reported Since Six Months Ago [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Final verdict on the Yui Aragaki ‘reverse height fudging’ theory: some say she’s really 176cm… 5ch buzzes over her ‘true height’

Speculation that Yui Aragaki’s real height is taller than her officially listed measurement has circulated on social media for years, and when Yahoo! News published an article digging into the truth, the topic caught fire on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board. The thread didn’t stop at Aragaki herself — actors like Hiroshi Tachi, Masato Sakai, and Masaki Okada, plus pro baseball and soccer players, all got dragged in over their own “fudged height” claims, turning it into a wider chat about height claims across the entertainment and sports industries. Photo-based guessing games got mixed in too, blending fact and speculation.

There are plenty of tall, model-turned-actress types in showbiz, but the one whose “real” height keeps coming up on social media — with guesses like “probably around 173cm” or “I’d estimate about 173cm” — is the hugely popular actress Yui Aragaki (38).

“Aragaki’s height has been a hot topic online for years. Every time she appears in a drama, movie, or variety show, comparisons with her co-stars spark comments like ‘Gakki’s actually tall.’

    Re: #74
Wasn't the big talking point with the ABS rollout that a lot of players stopped padding their height (stopped lying about being taller than they actually are)?

Background and key points of this discussion

It’s said that female celebrities’ announced heights tend to be listed shorter than their actual height, while conversely, male athletes’ official figures also tend to come in shorter than their actual height — and Yui Aragaki has long been cited online as the archetypal example of the former, with claims that she’s “actually around 173cm.” This latest news article set out to verify the truth behind that, but the thread expanded from talk about Aragaki herself into general “fudged height” trivia spanning celebrities and athletes across the board. Commenters noted that pro baseball players are often shorter than their official listing, while soccer players tend to “grow” a few centimeters over the course of their careers, and pointed to the example of Shohei Ohtani’s listed height being corrected to 193cm after MLB introduced its ABS (Automated Ball-Strike) system. That said, it’s worth keeping in mind that most of the “actually X cm” claims based purely on photos remain speculative — factoring in uncertainties like shoe sole thickness — rather than confirmed fact.

*This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary of the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Final verdict on the Yui Aragaki ‘reverse height fudging’ theory: some say 176cm… her ‘true height’ revealed standing sock-to-sock with Gen Hoshino.”

    Right lol
In Japan, ¥2,400 would get you a lavish spread.
So it's a mystery why so many people are so pessimistic about Japan.

It's because the ordinary middle class — the real source of a country's vitality — got neglected

    Summary
"State-to-state differences": California's baseline prices are higher, so that's a factor to some degree.

"The biggest factor": more than the state difference, the main reason is the special pricing of airports as closed-off locations. Even within California, prices don't get this extreme once you're at a supermarket in town.

Airports have always had scary prices, haven't they?
Even somewhere like Bangkok, stuff inside the airport is pretty pricey

Doesn't America have any states that want to secede or something?

You're comparing us to a price even locals are groaning about, not one foreigners consider normal — and then telling us the yen is done for? Come on.

Guys who can't earn a single dollar overseas are the ones who actually suffer from a weak yen.
He's just spending money he brought with him lol

Shut up, 14-hikari (a play on 七光り/'nanahikari,' the idiom for riding a parent's fame — he gets double since both his parents are celebrities)

    14-hikari lolol
Guess it's because he's got two of them
    34AnonymousAug 28, 2026 20:51
    Doesn't make sense.
Water and cookies should be like ¥250
    36AnonymousAug 28, 2026 20:53
Even converting at ¥100 to the dollar, that's still ¥1,500
The weak yen is real, but the dollar itself is inflating at a brutal pace too

There have been plenty of nepo babies riding their parents' fame before, but this kid uses that glow more than any of them, hands down.
Though he probably thinks it's all his own doing

American students can buy an iPhone after a week of part-time work,
but Japanese students can barely afford one even after two weeks.
That's what a country getting poorer looks like.

    Re: #45
What exactly are you looking at to call Japan poor, lol
    63AnonymousAug 28, 2026 21:03
Sounds like in America you need something like a ¥30 million annual income just to live a halfway decent life

    Re: #63
In Japan you never have to weigh rent against your life,
but in the US, skimp on rent and you're literally risking it lol.
A video I saw said you need at least ¥200,000 a month in rent if you don't want to end up dead.
In Japan anyone can live wherever they like — a lot of people don't realize how lucky that is.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Talk of the weak yen tends to invite comments like “the government’s policy is to blame,” but here both the weak yen and US inflation are working together. As the thread itself pointed out, even at a stronger ¥100-to-the-dollar rate, the water and cookies would still come to roughly ¥1,500 — meaning the root issue isn’t just the exchange rate but the sheer height of US price levels themselves. On top of that, airport shops face limited foot traffic and little competition, a structural quirk that tends to push prices even higher than in town, a pattern commenters also noted at airports elsewhere, like Bangkok. The thread split between a “weak yen is the main cause” camp and a “US inflation is the main cause” camp — both are partly right, and it’s the two factors combined that add up to the “¥2,400” figure. It’s also worth noting that because the poster is the child of a celebrity couple, commentary about his personal standing got mixed in alongside the economic discussion, with the two conversations running on parallel tracks.
