  • Yukari Kono Recounts Seeing an Incontinent Elderly Woman at a Station — 5ch: “The One Who Just Stood There Watching for 20 Minutes Is the Real Nutcase”

Yukari Kono (26), a former regular on the quiz show “Todai King” and a graduate of the University of Tokyo’s School of Medicine, posted on X that she encountered an elderly woman standing frozen at a train station after wetting herself. Kono wrote that although she tried to help, communication was difficult, station staff couldn’t respond, and no one spoke to the woman for 20 minutes — a post that became a hot topic on 5ch. Rather than debating the point of the post itself, discussion mostly centered on remarks like “wasn’t the person watching for 20 minutes the calmest one there?” and fact-checks noting the incident took place not in Tokyo but in Chiba Prefecture.

    Tue, Sep 1, 12:12 PM

Yukari Kono (26), who was a regular on TBS quiz show “Todai King” until it ended in September 2024 and graduated from the University of Tokyo’s School of Medicine, updated her X account by the 1st, writing about a “scary” incident she witnessed at a train station.

Kono opened by describing the scene: “There was an old woman standing in the station, and she’d wet herself.” She explained, “She wasn’t carrying anything, so I was worried and tried talking to her, but communication was difficult. I told a station attendant, but they seemed busy and couldn’t respond right away, so I handed her a Pocari [Sweat, a sports drink] for the time being and called the prefectural police.” She also wrote about the indifference of the people around her: “What’s scary is that not a single person even glanced at this old woman for the entire 20 minutes, even though it was a big station with tons of people around.”

    What's with the "20 minutes"?
Does that mean you were watching her for 20 minutes too?

During rush hour the place is packed with people, nobody can see what's around them anyway
and about half of them are staring dead at their phones

If it were a middle-school or high-school girl, this would be a whole different story (JC/JK = slang for schoolgirls)

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Kono is a talent and University of Tokyo School of Medicine graduate who was a regular on “Todai King” until the show ended in 2024, and this post was an eyewitness account she shared on X. What split opinion in the thread wasn’t agreement or disagreement with the post’s actual point — the indifference of bystanders — but skepticism about the framing itself: what did the person who spent 20 minutes observing actually do? Social media anecdotes tend to leave out details of timeline and action, and these unexplained gaps are exactly the kind of thing that draws suspicion on 5ch. There was also a string of replies criticizing the incident by assuming it happened in “Tokyo,” when the station was actually in Chiba Prefecture — later replies corrected the record. It’s worth keeping in mind, when reading topics that originate on social media, how easily a misidentified location can spread unchecked.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Yukari Kono witnesses at a station: “There was an old woman standing there who’d wet herself,” “What’s scary is that not a single person even glanced at her for these 20 minutes”.”

  • Smiley Kikuchi’s appeal post divides opinion — 5ch asks: “How much are they paying you for this?”

Talent Smiley Kikuchi posted on X on the night of August 31, addressing “those who feel uncomfortable about the Rikuryu pair or Hoshino Mari,” writing, “Let’s eat until we’re full and go to sleep!” The post was meant to gently rebuke the online criticism directed at figure skating’s Rikuryu pair and actress Hoshino Mari, and it sparked a huge reaction on 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ thread. While some responded to the post’s message with laughter or support, many others questioned Kikuchi’s consistency, asking “why speak up now, and only for these two?” — leaving the thread split between praise and criticism.

    Re: #69
When the people who criticized Smiley got doxxed/identified, they turned out to be pretty ordinary people, if I remember right.

    Background and points of contention

Smiley Kikuchi is known for having endured years of online slander after a false rumor spread in the late 1990s branding him the culprit in a murder he had nothing to do with — an experience that has led him to speak out repeatedly on the issue of online harassment. The Rikuryu pair (Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara) are the figure skating duo who won a medal at the Beijing Olympics, and Hoshino Mari is an actress; the thread itself never made clear exactly why the two had become targets of online criticism or discomfort. What divided opinion wasn’t so much the content of the post itself as the question of consistency — “why speak up now, and only for these two?” — with several posters pointing out that Kikuchi hadn’t offered similar defenses for other celebrities or athletes who’d faced comparable backlash in the past. At the same time, given that Kikuchi himself was once the victim of serious online slander, some voices in the thread showed understanding for his remarks, making the reaction more mixed than a simple split between support and criticism.

The thread also split over the “sales ended” label attached to Maria Makino, who is retiring from individual sessions with this release — with posters debating whether it genuinely means sold out, or is a misleading spin.

Morning Musume。’s “individual meet-and-greet and cheki (photo) sessions” sell numbered tickets for each member across one or more rounds, and fans tally up which rounds and how many slots sold out as a rough gauge of popularity. The “4th-round sellout rate” discussed here measures what share of available slots sold out — it’s not a straightforward popularity ranking, since it’s also shaped by release schedules and how many slots are allocated per round, something that’s easy to miss from the numbers alone. Notably, Maria Makino has already been confirmed to end her participation in individual sessions with this single, and unlike other members, her sign-ups were cut off earlier than usual as a result. The “sales ended” label attached to her slots has been mistaken by some as meaning she failed to sell out, sparking a debate over whether the wording amounts to deliberate, misleading spin. While the raw numbers might seem to map directly onto popularity, this is a good example of how the full picture gets distorted if you don’t account for factors like a member’s graduation or early cutoff.

  • Ligue 1’s Lyon Reportedly Eyeing Japan Star Keito Nakamura — 5ch: ‘Progress Rate: 5%’

French Ligue 1 side Lyon are considering signing Japan international midfielder Keito Nakamura (26), who currently plays for Ligue 2 club Stade Reims, according to local outlet Foot Mercato. The move is reportedly meant to fill a gap left by an expected departure among Lyon’s key forwards, with the transfer deadline looming in the early morning hours of September 2 (Japan time). Nakamura has previously been linked with Hull City in England and Ajax in the Netherlands, though neither rumor ever developed further. On 5ch, some posters expressed hope for the move, but skepticism toward a report that only says the club is “considering” it, along with sober assessments of Lyon’s well-documented financial troubles, stood out.

    Sponichi [ September 1, 2026, 04:30 ]

Local outlet Foot Mercato reported on the 30th that Ligue 1 club Lyon are considering signing Japan international midfielder Keito Nakamura (26), who plays for Ligue 2 side Stade Reims.

With one of Lyon’s key forwards expected to depart, the club is reportedly moving to fill the resulting gap. Nakamura, an attacker for Hajime Moriyasu’s Japan squad who shone at the World Cup in North/Central America and whose next move is drawing attention, had also reportedly been targeted by Hull City (England) and Ajax (Netherlands). France’s transfer window closes on the 1st.

They're carrying close to €200 million in debt.
Last year that actually got them administratively relegated to Ligue 2 at one point — it was overturned, and Reims went down instead based on standings.

There's no way they have the money for an outright transfer for Nakamura. A loan is about the best they could manage.

    Re: #82
He's got double-digit goals in the Premier League and you're calling that too low?

Background and key points of this story

Lyon is a club carrying massive debt, and its transfer-market spending has been restricted by DNCG, France’s financial oversight body for professional football — at one point there were even reports it could face administrative relegation to Ligue 2 (see post #74 in the thread). This report is still only at the “considering” stage, with no official offer or agreement in place. France’s transfer window closes in the early morning of September 2 (Japan time), and Nakamura has repeatedly been linked with clubs in England and the Netherlands before, only for those rumors to fade each time. Rather than optimism about the move, the thread was dominated by sober takes arguing that a full transfer is unrealistic given Lyon’s finances — with a loan seen as more likely — along with skepticism toward the very wording “considering.”

So how would it NOT have been harsh?

Background and Key Points of This Story

Yaeko Mizutani is a prestigious stage name representing the Shinpa theater troupe, handed down traditionally since the first generation. “Mizutani Chieko,” on the other hand, is the name of an impersonation character Tomochika has performed for years — one character off from the real actress’s name — and it kept being used that way throughout Mizutani’s lifetime without incident. What split opinion on the thread boils down to one question: did the 53-year-old Tomochika really not know the name of a major actress from the same era? Some argue there’s no way she wouldn’t know, given her position on television, while others point out that even a heavyweight of the theater world can have low name recognition with the general public depending on the field, so it wouldn’t be strange for her not to know. The “grace” mentioned in the headline refers to the fact that Yaeko Mizutani herself reportedly never raised the issue during her lifetime; this latest statement of condolence simply revisited and explained the backstory on the occasion of her death — it isn’t a new controversy, a distinction that’s easy to miss.

When Moriyama of "Mitorizu" shrugged and said, "So you didn't notice it was time to renew?" she answered, "I knew, but I wasn't confident," prompting reactions of "What a waste!"

    Isn't Moriyama misunderstanding here?

If you lose your confidence during driving school, better not to get the license at all — though maybe she just got unlucky with a bad instructor.

When I was young, a lot of instructors were scary — the type who'd just casually snap "Tch, you're not cut out for driving." These days, even instructors with tough-guy, almost yakuza-looking faces will praise you to build you up instead. Apparently if they don't, young people just quit and the schools can't stay in business. Times really do change, huh.
    109AnonymousSep 1, 2026 11:22
So basically: "I knew (the renewal deadline was coming up), but I wasn't confident (about driving), so (since I had no intention of driving anymore) I didn't renew it"

    — is that the gist?

She's talking about driving school though.
Isn't the rule that you have to get your license within six months of getting your provisional license?
So why is everyone bringing up license renewal?

Background and Key Points of Debate

Driving school involves multiple overlapping deadlines. Generally, students have about nine months from enrollment to complete the classroom coursework, and then one year after that to take the final license exam. Separate from all this is the “renewal” deadline that comes around every few years once you’ve actually obtained a license. The original article only quotes the line “I knew, but I wasn’t confident,” without clarifying which deadline Naenano was actually referring to — or even whether she’d obtained a license at all. That single ambiguity is exactly what split opinion in the thread, with one camp arguing she simply “skipped a renewal” and another insisting she “never actually got the license because the driving-school deadline lapsed,” each side reading the same quote differently. The 8-ton-limited mid-size license (automatically granted to anyone who obtained a regular license before the June 2007 law revision) also came up, sparking a split between those who doubted its practical value since fewer vehicles qualify each year, and those who called it valuable precisely because it doesn’t require a depth-perception test. In the end, both debates stem from the article’s thin explanation and remain speculation — what Naenano actually meant has not been confirmed.

Murata Yui of Hello! That same day, Juice=Juice appeared on CDTV performing “Moretemiamore” (盛れ!ミ・アモーレ), and on 5ch her post sparked both the observation that “she’d surely be told about a booking by staff in advance” and debate over the exposure gap with Juice=Juice. Background and Key Points of This Topic

In the entertainment industry, it’s generally standard for talent to be told about a music show booking by their agency or staff well before ever finding out from an on-air preview right before broadcast. That point was raised early in the thread, and the prevailing reading was that Murata’s post was simply an expression of hope from a fan’s-eye view. The real point of contention was the exposure gap between groups within Hello! Project: many posts shared the view that Tsubaki Factory gets far fewer TV appearances than Juice=Juice, who made headlines with their CDTV appearance, but opinions split over whether that gap comes down to a difference in “skill” or simply a difference in the agency’s promotion strategy. There was also a divide between a cynical view that treats the anticipatory post itself as promotional “posturing,” and a more sympathetic view that reads it as genuine fan service — reflecting the differing temperatures among fans themselves over how to interpret an idol’s social media posts.

Up through Hikaru Genji, debuting was the end goal for Johnny's idols.
SMAP branched out into variety shows and started selling each member's individual personality,
carving out a path to stay active even into their 40s — that really was a great achievement.
And it was Iijima [their manager] and the SMAP members themselves who built that, not Johnny or Mary [Kitagawa].

The idea that SMAP survived through variety shows is wrong — Johnny's has been doing variety since ancient times.
SMAP's generation had a bigger population, and then the birthrate dropped fast afterward, so idols from that generation started sticking around longer. Even gravure idols now keep going into their 30s and 40s.
Back in the day the lineup churned dizzyingly fast within a single year, and even the Dragon Quest games came out at an insane pace.
As the youth population shrank, culture stopped being youth-centered — nowadays businesses mainly target people in their late 30s to 50s.

The leader is the same age as Moroboshi, lol

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Hikaru Genji debuted in 1987 and scored hits like “Taiyou ga Ippai,” but their sales plummeted sharply around 1990. Thread posters point to the end of music countdown shows and the impact of former member Koji Kita’s tell-all books as contributing factors, but it’s worth noting these are just some of the theories that have circulated since that era, not an officially confirmed cause. Meanwhile, SMAP, formed around the same time, is often held up as a contrast — they expanded into variety shows and remained front-line stars even into their 40s. That said, moving into variety TV wasn’t unique to SMAP; Johnny’s had already been using that approach since the days of the “Tanokin Trio.” Some view the real backdrop as broader shifts in the media landscape at the time — the end of the golden age of music countdown shows and structural changes in the entertainment industry driven by the declining birthrate — rather than a strategy specific to SMAP. Matsuoka’s personal reflections on Atsuhiro Sato and the broader 5ch discussion about Hikaru Genji’s decline and comparisons with SMAP are, strictly speaking, separate topics, and keeping that distinction in mind makes the thread easier to follow.

He reportedly had already written his farewell message two days after Argentina’s loss to Spain in the 2026 North/Central America World Cup final, and revealed that his conviction in the decision grew even stronger after the death of his father, Jorge, on August 8. On 5ch, opinions split over the “greatest of all time” debate involving Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Mbappé, the possibility of a national-team comeback, and the pros and cons of alleged “favorable treatment” from FIFA and his club.

Lionel Messi Announces Retirement from Argentina National Team, “I gave everything. There’s nothing left to give” — 207 Caps, 125 Goals Over 21 Years

Argentina national team forward Lionel Messi announced his retirement from the national team via his official Instagram on the 31st, local time. The 39-year-old Messi revealed the decision roughly a month and a half after this summer’s FIFA World Cup 2026 (North/Central America World Cup) final. “It’s a decision that pains my soul, but the time has come,” he said, closing the book on a national-team career spanning 21 years.

Messi reportedly wrote his farewell message on July 21, two days after the World Cup final loss to Spain. His father, Jorge, then passed away on August 8. In this latest post, Messi revealed that his father’s death left him “more certain of the decision than before.”

Well, with results like these, I do worry a bit about Messi's lifespan

will he live long enough to become Argentina's manager?
Maradona was alive, at least, and forced his way into the manager job despite huge domestic opposition

Funny how team balance works — even with those two together, they were still about the weakest link in PSG in recent years

    Background and Talking Points

It’s easy to misread Messi’s national-team retirement as also ending his club career — it isn’t; this is specifically his retirement from the Argentina national team. The announcement came a month and a half after the World Cup final defeat, and the recent death of his father, Jorge, is said to have factored into the decision. Opinions in the thread split over timing — whether he should have stepped away after winning the 2022 tournament — and over the ever-present “greatest of all time” debate involving Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Mbappé, with no consensus reached. Some voices pointed to favorable treatment from FIFA or his club, though the article offers no evidence for this, so it’s best read as just one perspective among many.

  • Hikari Ota Hails Sandwichman as “National Treasures,” Sends Support to Stroke-Stricken Date

Bakushou Mondai’s Hikari Ota, appearing on the August 30 broadcast of “Sunday Japon,” praised Sandwichman’s Mikio Date (51) — currently hospitalized and resting after suffering a stroke — and his partner Takeshi Tomizawa as “national treasures” and “Japan’s greatest manzai duo,” offering words of encouragement. Ota’s own partner, Yuji Tanaka, suffered a stroke himself a few years ago, and his comments are believed to draw on that experience. On 5ch, Ota’s remarks sparked a wider debate about Sandwichman’s actual comedic chops, a “is it manzai or sketch comedy” style debate, and even comparisons to Downtown and Untouchable, with opinions sharply divided.

Bakushou Mondai’s Hikari Ota appeared live on TBS’s “Sunday Japon” (Sundays, 9:54 AM) on the 30th and sent warm words of encouragement to Sandwichman’s Mikio Date (51), who has been hospitalized and undergoing treatment after suffering a stroke as announced on the group’s official website, and to his comedy partner Takeshi Tomizawa (52).

The show covered the official announcement, details of Date’s condition that Tomizawa shared on his blog, and a message from Date that Tomizawa read aloud during Nippon Broadcasting’s live show on the 29th. It has been announced that Date will focus on treatment and rest for the time being.

Once you've had a stroke, getting back to 100% is impossible — you'll end up with some kind of after-effects. Even mild cases probably leave you slower to think or stumbling over words

Downtown never made it as manzai comedians and were on the verge of quitting show business entirely
As a last-ditch effort they pivoted to being TV personalities going the "Tunnels of the West" route (mimicking the hit Tokyo duo Tunnels), and that blew up huge

In other words, Downtown had zero talent for manzai
    28AnonymousAug 30, 2026 14:58

    32AnonymousAug 30, 2026 15:02
    Re: #28
Sandwichman's manzai is really "character-sketch manzai" where they play roles

It'd make sense to do sketch-style manzai if multiple characters showed up
But they're just doing one-on-one sketches dressed up as manzai
So they don't really give off a "manzai comedian" vibe

Even Tanaka, who gets absolutely roasted by him in public,
goes as far as saying "I love Ota because he's kind" — that says a lot

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Sandwichman originally debuted as sketch comedians and, in order to compete in the M-1 Grand Prix, reworked their sketch-style material into manzai form — a history that repeatedly fueled the thread’s “is it sketch comedy or manzai” debate. Ota’s partner, Yuji Tanaka, also suffered a stroke and went through recovery a few years ago, and his encouragement this time is believed to draw on that experience. A stroke’s after-effects can vary enormously depending on how quickly it’s treated and which part of the brain is affected, which is why opinions in the thread split between “mild cases can fully recover” and “it depends on the after-effects.” Note that the speculative comments about the Date family lineage and the reasons behind the duo’s popularity are not confirmed facts.
