The story

THE MOTEL, a five-member band based in Japan, only launched its YouTube channel in May 2026, but had already been generating buzz on X for a level of polish “that doesn’t sound Japanese.” Then on September 24, music-critic YouTuber Mino, who has 550,000 subscribers, posted a video arguing that the band’s performance and even its vocals were likely produced with generative AI, and the allegations spread rapidly. On 5channel threads, many commenters said the real problem wasn’t the use of AI itself but the fact that the band had “pretended to be playing and singing themselves.” Opinions were also split on where to draw the line between this and established Vocaloid-style productions like Hatsune Miku.

Allegations have surfaced that the rock band THE MOTEL (7,300 subscribers), praised on X for a level of polish “that doesn’t sound Japanese,” may have had its songs generated by AI. On September 24, music-critic YouTuber Mino (550,000 subscribers) posted a video titled “Honestly, This Buzzy AI Band Is Rough,” laying out the view that the songs were made with generative AI.

THE MOTEL is a five-member alternative rock band based in Japan. TuneCore Japan’s artist page lists MOY on vocals, NAOTO and RYO on guitar, R1N on drums, and Leo on bass as its members. The band’s YouTube channel only launched in May 2026 and its X account in July, with a single called “NO” released for streaming on September 13.

Honestly I'd rather watch some Osaka night-view video channel on YouTube than the Peace-kun statue at Omiya Park anyway (Peace-kun is a well-known mascot statue there).
6AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:04
Who cares, if the song's good it's good.
9AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:05
Re: #6
Going by this article, they're just pretending to play — the instruments and the voice all seem to be AI.
108AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:36
Re: #9
There's plenty of that already — the only difference is whether it's AI or a hidden stand-in performer.
11AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:06
What's so wrong about using AI in the first place?
16AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:08
Re: #11
If they'd just come out from the start and said it's an AI band instead of faking it, wouldn't that have been fine?
23AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:09
Re: #11
It's not the AI that's the problem, it's the people pretending they're not using AI. As always.
43AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:18
Re: #11
If it's AI-generated, it's basically a straight-up copy of existing songs — not one percent of it is original. Doing that without admitting you're a copycat band is just cowardly.
21AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:09
There's a music video of them playing guitar — wouldn't anyone who actually plays guitar spot it right away?
122AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:41
Re: #21
So if no decent guitarist has called it out yet, maybe that means the allegations are off base.
30AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:13
Lol, they got busted because the singing was too good. AI's already better than humans at this point.
57AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:23
Re: #30
I think it's being called out because the English was too good. No matter how well a foreigner sings Japanese lyrics, there's always some distinctive awkwardness that lingers unless you're a native speaker.
65AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:25
Re: #57
Nicholas Edwards's or Yanaimo's J-pop covers don't sound awkward at all though (both are YouTubers known for singing Japanese songs).

He's got a recognizable face.
He's active in music himself.
He's got deep knowledge and sharp analytical skills.

So why hasn't Mino made it as a musician himself, I wonder.
78AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:28
Re: #35
If he actually had the talent and a real shot at making it as a musician, he probably wouldn't be doing YouTube in the first place, right?
92AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:33
Re: #35
He seems more like the producer type, doesn't he?
39AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:17
We're already living in a world where impersonators compose by copying other impersonators, so acting like AI is somehow the outrageous one is kind of silly lol

Though I guess as long as they can actually play and sing it, it wouldn't matter if they didn't write the lyrics and music themselves.
49AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:20
Re: #39
It'd be totally fine if they just disclosed it was AI.

Even on Spotify, tons of new AI-generated songs are showing up these days.
53AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:20
Re: #39
I think having AI handle the songwriting is completely fine. It's just that when the vocals are also AI, and a human lies and says "I'm singing this myself," that's what makes it messy.
42AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:18
How is this any different from Hatsune Miku?
52AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:20
Re: #42
With Hatsune Miku, a human writes the song, and a human painstakingly tunes the vocals to make them sound natural.
67AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:25
Give it three to five years and every one of these so-called "artists" (lol) will be out of a job lol lol lol
71AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:27
Re: #67
Nah, it won't go that way — people crave perfection on one hand, but unconsciously crave imperfection too 🥴
72AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:27
Re: #67 adding to that
And it's not just music — illustration, art, design in general too lol lol lol

Yeah, that one — the Nirvana-ish sounding track. I'm embarrassed I actually thought, "wow, this vocalist is amazing."

Revenge of Minomonta (wordplay on famous TV host Minomonta's name and the critic Mino's)

Re: #74
That's fiiiine by me, Minomontaaa 🙄 (mimicking Minomonta's old catchphrase)
90AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:32
If they're putting the song out as a piece of work and it's trained only on their own voice, isn't that fine? There's probably a desire to make something sound polished and cool even if you can't pull off native-level English yourself — and online culture has already been through the whole Vocaloid-producer thing anyway.

But faking it like they're really singing live is just baffling — since it's not their actual skill, they presumably can't even perform it live. What's the point of turning yourself into the fake one, lol.
94AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:33
Re: #90
Well, sure, but there's also suspicion the composing itself was handed off to AI — and honestly, it does sound like it turned out that way.
97AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:34
At this rate, in another two or three years we'll probably reach a point where you genuinely can't tell AI from human anymore.

Never imagined the entertainment industry would be the first one AI actually replaced.
103AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:36
Re: #97
For music alone, it's already impossible to tell.
112AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:37
Re: #97
Composing might already be impossible to tell. But performance and singing get exposed the moment there's a live show.

Re: #1
I had this image of AI stuff as cheap and mass-produced, but this was actually pretty good.

Re: #99
Sounds like something THE ALFEE (an '80s Japanese rock band) arranged lol. You're just an old guy who's happy with any metal as long as the vocalist's a girl, aren't you lol
118AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:39
A lot of girl rock bands have middle-aged guys playing the instruments behind the scenes anyway — is that supposed to be fine then?
121AnonymousSep 26, 2026 15:41
Re: #118
That's a totally different thing.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Music production using generative AI is already widespread on streaming services like Spotify, and several commenters in the thread noted that “it wouldn’t be a problem if they’d just labeled it as AI.” What’s actually at issue in this controversy isn’t the use of AI technology itself, but the fact that TuneCore Japan’s artist page listed the members’ real names and presented it as though real musicians were handling the performing, songwriting, and singing. Japan currently has no legal requirement to label AI-generated content, leaving disclosure entirely up to the creator’s discretion — and it’s this gray area that’s splitting opinion in the thread. Mino, who raised the allegations, has an established track record as a music-critic YouTuber, but as of this writing, THE MOTEL has issued no official explanation or rebuttal.
