  • BABYMETAL Lands on a Marvel Limited-Edition Comic Cover — 5ch Erupts in Debate Over Their Overseas Fame

BABYMETAL will appear on a limited-edition variant cover for the US-released Marvel comic ‘Marvel Zombies: War Zone.’ The project grew out of the band’s 2025 collaboration providing a song for the anime series ‘Marvel Zombies,’ and a limited quantity will also go on sale in Japan starting September 7 via the online store ‘A!SMART.’ The news sparked a comparison debate on a 5ch thread over just how well-known BABYMETAL really is overseas, with posters citing supposed AI-calculated recognition rates and comparing the band’s latest album chart rankings against BABYMONSTER’s — opinions were split.

    9/2 (Wed) 13:26

BABYMETAL, currently in the middle of a roughly month-long North American tour, has been confirmed to appear on a limited variant cover celebrating the release of the US Marvel comic ‘Marvel Zombies: War Zone (2026) #1.’ BABYMETAL now joins the lineup of rare collectible items in which world-class athletes and entertainers appear alongside Marvel’s iconic characters in official comic works.

BABYMETAL provided the song ‘from me to u feat. Poppy’ as the trailer theme for the animated series ‘Marvel Zombies’ in 2025, and this limited variant cover was created drawing inspiration from BABYMETAL’s ongoing collaboration with ‘Marvel Zombies.’ Produced in limited quantities, it goes on sale in Japan starting Monday, September 7 at 18:00 via the online store ‘A!SMART.’

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Marvel’s limited celebrity variant covers are a series in which world-famous athletes and artists appear alongside comic characters, and BABYMETAL was brought on board thanks to their tie-in from providing a song for the 2025 anime ‘Marvel Zombies.’ What split the thread was how to measure ‘fame overseas.’ The AI-estimated recognition rates one side presented came with no clear methodology or sourcing, making them little more than a rough guide at best. The other side fired back with the first-week chart rankings of the latest albums in the US, UK, and Germany, but those are also just short-term figures that don’t necessarily prove long-term name recognition. Readers should note that neither set of numbers is official survey data — and the exchange itself devolved more into an emotional back-and-forth than a real debate over data validity.

  • K Dub Shine Slams Noritake Kinashi’s ‘Mercedes Stomping’: ‘Do You Even Respect Hip-Hop?’

On the April 25 broadcast of ABEMA’s “Kinashi Record,” Noritake Kinashi climbed onto the roof of guest rapper SHO’s gold Mercedes and dented it while bouncing around on top of it — footage that has been drawing renewed criticism online over the past few days. In response, rapper K Dub Shine criticized Kinashi, asking “Noritake, do you even respect hip-hop?” — a remark that made news in its own right. On 5channel’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, though, reactions focused less on slamming Kinashi and more on the timing and standing behind K Dub Shine’s comment. A lot of the back-and-forth also boiled down to onlookers debating who outranks whom between Kinashi and K Dub Shine.

    Sept 2 (Wed), 5:30 PM

Noritake Kinashi of the comedy duo Tunnels has faced a wave of criticism these past few days over an “incident” from a show that aired on ABEMA roughly four months ago. On social media, the backlash still hasn’t died down at all.

“The scene causing controversy is from the April 25 episode of ABEMA’s ‘Kinashi Record.’ Rapper SHO appeared as a guest, and during the show Kinashi climbed onto the roof of SHO’s gold Mercedes. Ignoring SHO’s worried protests of ‘this might be dangerous,’ Kinashi bounced up and down on top of the car and ended up denting the roof.”

Background and Key Points of This Story

The controversy traces back to roughly four months ago, when Noritake Kinashi climbed onto rapper SHO’s gold Mercedes on ABEMA’s “Kinashi Record” and dented its roof. It barely registered when the episode first aired — the backlash on social media only flared up again in the past few days. What stands out this time is that it wasn’t SHO himself but his senior in the scene, K Dub Shine, who spoke up, asking “Do you even respect hip-hop?” on SHO’s behalf. Opinions in the thread were split: some took a cynical view of the timing, calling it “jumping on the bandwagon now to act tough,” while others sided with K Dub Shine, arguing that “wrecking someone else’s prized car is the real problem, regardless of hip-hop.” Several posts also pointed out that the core issue is really the damaged car itself, not hip-hop — a reminder to be wary of framing this purely as a “Kinashi vs. rap” showdown.

  • Multiple ¥10-Billion Box-Office Contenders Lining Up for Next Year’s Movies — 5ch: “Pokémon’s Just Handing Out Poké Cards Every Week Now”

A thread on 5ch’s “Nandemo Jikkyou G” (general live-discussion) board took up movies set for release next year (2027). Detective Conan, Haikyu!!, One Piece, and Pokémon’s theatrical films were all floated as candidates to clear ¥10 billion at the box office, and word surfaced that a new Demon Slayer film is all but locked in for summer 2028. The talk centered less on the films’ quality than on the trading cards handed out as attendance bonuses, with posters speculating that One Piece and Pokémon could boost turnout by giving away a new card every week. At the same time, there was plenty of griping about box office now hinging on freebies, and no shortage of jabs at scalpers cashing in on those bonus cards.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

A box office of ¥10 billion is generally treated as the benchmark for a major hit in Japanese cinema, and in recent years whether theatrical anime films clear that line has become a recurring topic. The dividing line in this thread was whether turnout is being driven by the popularity of the films themselves or by fans chasing the trading cards given out as attendance bonuses. Posters repeatedly pointed to cases of One Piece and Pokémon bonus cards selling for high prices on the resale market, arguing that this is what’s really boosting attendance figures. It’s worth noting that the claim of a new Demon Slayer film being all but confirmed for summer 2028 is speculation from within the thread, not an official announcement.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

It’s no longer unusual for celebrities to take legal action over online defamation, and cases progressing from disclosure requests to damages claims have been increasing in recent years. In the thread, users noted examples where damages of several hundred thousand yen up to around one million yen per case have reportedly been awarded when habitual or malicious behavior is recognized, and specific names of the SNS platforms and aggregator sites allegedly involved were floated. The Act on the Handling of Information Distribution Platforms (the “Joho Platform Act”), which took effect in 2024, requires major SNS operators to respond promptly to takedown requests — legal groundwork that has lowered the barrier for individuals filing disclosure requests. That said, the thread wasn’t uniformly supportive: some asked “why didn’t she deal with this sooner,” while others made cynical remarks framing legal action as a new income stream. It’s worth noting that Watanabe’s side has not disclosed the specific content of the abusive posts, the details of the harm suffered, or how many people are being pursued, so the speculation in the thread should not be treated as established fact.

  • Hirotada Ototake wary of censorship: ‘Are we not allowed to depict negative portrayals of disabled people?’

As the planned anime adaptation of the manga “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” sends ripples through the industry — including a formal statement from a group supporting people with intellectual disabilities — author Hirotada Ototake has published a piece questioning whether “negative portrayals of disabled people” should be off-limits, taking a cautious stance against censorship. On 5ch, reactions split: some praised Ototake’s argument, while many others pointed out that what’s actually drawing criticism toward “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” isn’t the portrayal itself so much as its mocking, contemptuous tone. Critics also brought up Ototake’s own position and past remarks, and the discussion spread to cover both the work itself and Ototake’s personal credibility.

An anime adaptation has been greenlit for the manga “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” (Kodansha), set in Tokyo’s Kabukicho nightlife district and following women working as hostesses. The protagonist is said to be modeled on a woman with a mild intellectual disability. The work’s depictions have sparked both support and backlash, including a public statement from a group that supports people with intellectual disabilities.

Author Hirotada Ototake has voiced strong concern that “Mii-chan and Yamada-san” could fuel prejudice and abuse directed at disabled people — but he also believes we should be cautious about regulating only negative portrayals of disability. (The following is Ototake’s own contribution.)

Are “negative portrayals of disabled people” simply off-limits?

and the welfare support is solid too, so you're not struggling to get by.
Even in disability hiring quotas, the popular candidates are physically disabled people whose minds work like anyone else's.

Mental illness and developmental disorders, on the other hand, barely get anyone hired.
A lot of people hide it out of fear of discrimination and just pass as able-bodied,

I'd recommend 'Kujo's Great Sin' (Kujo no Taizai) —

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Mii-chan and Yamada-san” is a manga depicting a woman with a mild intellectual disability working as a hostess, and the publication of a formal statement from a support group turned it into a debate over which should take priority: freedom of expression or preventing the spread of prejudice against disabled people. Ototake’s piece raises the question of whether only “24-Hour TV”-style “inspiration porn” portrayals of disability are being tolerated — but notably, the thread’s reactions focused less on the substance of his argument than on the credibility of Ototake’s own background and past remarks. Some pointed out that physical disabilities receive different levels of support and public understanding than intellectual or developmental disabilities, highlighting how difficult it is to lump all “disabled people” into one category. Note that comments containing baseless personal attacks on the work or its author, or that referenced real criminal cases, have been excluded from this article, which sticks to organizing the debate over censorship itself.

  • Kazutoyo Koyabu Leaving Yoshimoto Kogyo — 5ch Reacts: ‘Partner Contracts Never Last’

On 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+), a report from Owarai Natalie sparked discussion after revealing that comedian Kazutoyo Koyabu will leave Yoshimoto Kogyo at the end of 2026 and shift to a partnership contract starting next January. Thread posters explained that under this arrangement, Yoshimoto only handles fielding outside work offers without actively pitching him for jobs, and Koyabu himself would cover travel and lodging costs for location shoots and appearances. Reactions were split: some pointed to past comedians who signed similar deals only to eventually leave the agency altogether, arguing “this kind of contract never lasts,” while others speculated it signals a shift toward focusing on acting work.

Basically, if a job offer comes in from outside, Yoshimoto still acts as the contact point, but they won't actively pitch or promote him for work. Funny how people won't trust old media but swallow web news whole

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Thread posters explained that under Yoshimoto Kogyo’s partnership contract system, Yoshimoto only serves as a point of contact for outside job offers without actively pitching or promoting the talent, and travel and lodging costs are shouldered by the performer themselves. While some comedians who moved to this type of contract ended up leaving the agency entirely, others — like Tomochika and Tamura Kenji — have stayed on it for years, so a contract change alone doesn’t necessarily mean “going independent” or “falling out” with the agency. The news report alone doesn’t fully convey how the system actually works in practice, which makes it easy to misread. Koyabu is also a member of Shinkigeki NEXT, and how this contract change will affect his future involvement with the troupe isn’t yet clear from the current reporting.

  • Waseda Professor Erupts Over wakatte.tv Video of Sitting on a Graduate’s Diploma

On September 1st, a video published in April 2021 by the academic-pedigree YouTube channel “wakatte.tv” (770,000 subscribers) went viral again on social media. In the clip, a cast member calls a graduate’s diploma from Waseda University’s commencement ceremony a “safety net” (a pun on backup university choices), sets it on the ground, and sits down on top of it. The video has been publicly viewable since its release and has racked up 880,000 views, but criticism exploded after a Waseda University professor called out the channel by name on X (formerly Twitter), saying “This is inhuman behavior.” On 5channel threads, opinions split between those who see academic-pedigree mockery as the channel’s whole shtick — priced in from the start — and those who say using an individual graduate’s actual diploma crossed a line.

On September 1st, a professor at the university criticized the clip on X, calling it “inhuman behavior.”

Timed to Waseda’s commencement ceremony, the segment involved asking graduates leaving the ceremony about their job placements.

He personally experienced the core problem with Japan's education system firsthand — someone who cleared a brutal entrance-exam screening still couldn't keep up with undergrad coursework that isn't even that hard — and yet here he is making content that props up that very same system. Kind of a letdown.

Background and Key Points of This Story

wakatte.tv is an academic-pedigree YouTube channel with 770,000 subscribers, known for content that mocks university students over their academic credentials. The video at the center of this controversy was published in April 2021 and has 880,000 views; it already had some recognition at the time, but it rapidly went viral again after a Waseda University professor called it out by name on X on September 1st. Opinions in the thread split between those who see academic-pedigree mockery as the whole point of the channel’s content — “why is this a surprise now?” — and those who argue that using the setting of a commencement ceremony and an individual graduate’s actual diploma crosses a line. The discussion was also fueled by the fact that the cast members’ own educational backgrounds (only a high school diploma, a Kyoto University dropout, etc.) became a talking point themselves, creating an ironic situation where the credentials of those mocking others’ credentials ended up under scrutiny. It’s worth noting that neither whether the video was filmed on university grounds, nor whether the diploma was used with the graduate’s consent, has been confirmed with certainty within the thread.

  • Tomomi Itano’s New Dress Panned for ‘Wearable to Funerals Too’ Label — Quietly Fixed by Just Deleting the Word ‘Funeral’

Former AKB48 member Tomomi Itano (35) shared a new one-piece dress from her self-produced lifestyle brand on Instagram, but the tagline — “can be worn for every formal occasion, even funerals” — drew a wave of etiquette complaints on social media, with people saying things like “that’s not appropriate funeral wear.” After the backlash, the copy was quietly revised to “can be worn for formal occasions,” simply dropping the word “funeral” from the original four-part phrase. On the 5ch thread, discussion ranged from the core question of whether the black dress actually works as mourning attire, to a side debate over the grammatically “improper” way of saying “can be worn” in Japanese, to jokes about whether you can really fix a set four-character phrase for life’s major ceremonies just by deleting one character.

    Background and Key Points

At Japanese funerals, general etiquette calls for avoiding shiny fabrics or revealing designs and instead wearing subdued mourning wear or semi-formal black attire. Itano’s new one-piece was marketed as a versatile piece that could go from everyday wear to formal ceremonial occasions, but opinions on the thread were mainly split over whether it actually holds up as mourning attire. Also discussed was the backstory of how the mistaken phrase “kankonsai” — missing one character from the proper four-character term “kankonsōsai” (the four major life ceremonies: coming-of-age, weddings, funerals, and rites) — was corrected after being flagged on social media. A second, unrelated thread of conversation was a long-running grammar debate over whether “kireru” or “kirareru” (both meaning “can be worn”) is the grammatically correct form — the so-called “dropped-ra” issue. This kind of derailment into Japanese-language nitpicking is a common pattern on threads like this, and this one was no exception. Note: several unverified posts about Itano’s personal life and relationships also appeared in the thread, but since they couldn’t be confirmed, they have been excluded from this article.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread ““That’s not appropriate for a funeral” — Tomomi Itano’s new dress sparks etiquette debate, wording changed from “can be worn for every occasion, even funerals” to “can be worn for occasions” after criticism.”

The English Championship ranks around 6th in the world, right up there with the big five leagues. Scotland's top flight, for reference, is somewhere around 39th.

    Re: #93
At West Ham he'd be a guaranteed sub. Birmingham would've been the easiest place to nail down a starting spot, but they have no shot at promotion.

    Background and Key Talking Points

The Scottish Premiership, where Reo Hatate had been playing, is generally ranked in the 30s worldwide and isn’t considered a high-level league. The English Championship, on the other hand, is said to rival the Dutch or Belgian top flights in financial power and attendance, putting it just below the “big five” leagues. Kyogo Furuhashi, who left Celtic for England before Hatate, failed to replicate his scoring touch in the Championship, and that precedent fueled a mix of worry and hope in the thread about Hatate “stepping up in class.”

It’s also a known fact that Hatate, Hidemasa Morita, and Daizen Maeda all switched agents around the same time in an attempt to follow the same path to the Premier League that Ao Tanaka had already taken. The ability to get a visa straight from Japan to England is a relatively recent rule change in the post-Brexit era; back when Hatate moved to Celtic, that direct route didn’t exist yet. Burnley have become known in recent years as a “yo-yo club,” bouncing between the Premier League and the Championship, and whether this move ends up being a stepping stone back toward the top flight for Hatate will depend on how much playing time he gets going forward.

He could just stand behind the other four members looking sulky and cynical and people still ate it up

Kimutaku feels like the last person you'd associate with fast food, yet somehow he keeps getting cast for McDonald's, Yoshinoya, and the like
Maybe there's just something weirdly funny about seeing Kimutaku holding a burger

Kimu actually comes off pretty down-to-earth — his off-duty clothes look kind of goofy too
Doesn't give off a 'dines at fancy restaurants' vibe at all

    Isn't the mentai-takana mayo bowl
    basically a Sukiya ripoff…?

I thought so too, but it's not a straight copy
    Sukiya: takana + mentai-mayo (combined)
Yoshinoya: takana + mentaiko + mayo (separate)
    Yoshinoya's actually sounds tastier
Sukiya should switch to this format too

If we're talking 'definitely doesn't actually eat this,' Ishihara Satomi's Sukiya ads always felt way more off to me
    20AnonymousSep 2, 2026 09:26
As always there's a ton of people having a knee-jerk reaction just because it's Kimutaku
If a mere commercial sets you off like this, life must be rough
    21AnonymousSep 2, 2026 09:26
Credit where it's due — Kimutaku can pull off everything from slick luxury-brand ads to down-home commercials like this
    22AnonymousSep 2, 2026 09:27
He was already eating beef bowls in Judge Eyes (the video game he starred in), so this is nothing new

Hey, foodie old man (a 5ch nickname poking fun at food-obsessed middle-aged guys), quit looking over here lol
    25AnonymousSep 2, 2026 09:28
I get the takana, but does mentaiko actually go with it?
Feels like you're just paying extra for the same kick you'd get from shichimi (Japanese seven-spice)

I don't think there's a more wasted expense than advertising fees — is it basically protection money?
Going the Amway (multi-level marketing) route might honestly be more upfront in a way

Wait, is it actually true that luxury brands spend way more on advertising?

I honestly wonder how much ad impact a commercial of Kimutaku eating a beef bowl even has — what demographic is this even targeting?

Kimutaku's face looks thinner lately with deeper wrinkles, it's a bit worrying
    Hope it's nothing serious

Haven't been to Yoshigyu (Yoshinoya) in ages
These days you don't tell the staff your order directly anymore, right?

Background and key points of this discussion

This commercial campaign spotlights each customer’s own “oshi-gyu,” with Kimura’s pick landing on the mentai-takana mayo bowl. In the thread, comments questioning whether the actor actually eats beef bowls in real life stood out, but that’s a standard reaction that follows just about any celebrity-fronted food commercial — it isn’t unique to Kimura. There were also pointers that Sukiya already sells a similar item using mentaiko, takana, and mayonnaise, though the exact combination and ratio of ingredients differs between the two chains, so it’s a stretch to call it a straight copy. Kimura has repeatedly been cast in commercials for down-to-earth chains like McDonald’s in the past, and it appears the appeal of casting him across both high-end brands and mass-market products is part of what fueled this round of discussion.
