  • Yumeno Kyusaku’s ‘Dogra Magra’ Special Edition Up for Preorder at ¥7,000 — Its ‘You’ll Go Insane’ Obi Strip Blurb Sparks Buzz

Yumeno Kyusaku’s novel Dogra Magra is famous for the striking obi (belly-band) blurb slapped on its 1976 Kadokawa Bunko paperback: “Anyone who finishes reading this will suffer a mental breakdown within hours.” Preorders for a new special edition have now become a hot topic on 5ch, where the thread mixed comments like “I’ve already got the paperback, but ¥7,000 is a tough call” and gripes about the cover design with a broader debate over which of the “Three Great Mystery Novels” — alongside The Black Death Mansion Murders and An Offering to Nothingness — still holds up as an enjoyable read today.

“Anyone who reads this through to the end is said to suffer some form of mental breakdown within a matter of hours. Whatever happens to the reader is a result of this book’s phantasmagoric, bizarre content, and we cannot be held responsible — please understand this in advance.”

This was the tagline printed on the obi strip of the first printing when Yumeno Kyusaku’s two-volume novel Dogra Magra was published by Kadokawa Bunko in 1976.

This writer (BuzzFeed Japan’s Ando) has also attempted to finish Dogra Magra, but gave up in the face of its bewilderingly convoluted structure, where it’s impossible to tell where reality ends and dream begins.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Dogra Magra is a detective novel published in 1935, grouped with Oguri Mushitaro’s The Black Death Mansion Murders and Nakai Hideo’s An Offering to Nothingness as Japan’s “Three Great Mystery Novels.” The line “will cause a mental breakdown” attached to the 1976 Kadokawa Bunko edition was the publisher’s own promotional copy — there’s no actual reader on record who finished the book and genuinely lost their mind. The thread also debated whether protagonist Ichiro Kure truly is the culprit behind the killings, along with opinions on the earlier film adaptation, though in every case interpretations stayed split thanks to the original’s notorious difficulty. This new special edition is simply a repackaging with different binding from the paperback — the story itself isn’t changing.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Born in 1988, Natsuna is an actress known for playing the heroine in NHK’s 2012 morning drama “Jun to Ai,” as well as for a nude scene in the film “GANTZ” and the series “Sweet Revenge.” She married a non-celebrity man in 2018 and continues acting while raising children. Rather than reacting to the swimsuit photos themselves, much of the thread veered into older topics — debate over “Jun to Ai,” the star-studded cast she appeared with in the film “Saki,” and long-running plastic surgery speculation — a tendency typical of the Geisoku+ board. Comments making definitive claims about another actress’s dating history, or that appeared to confuse her with an unrelated celebrity’s scandal, were excluded from this article since they couldn’t be verified.

Comedian Takashi Yoshida of the duo Black Mayonnaise posted a question on X (formerly Twitter): “Some people online use the word ‘chīgyū’ to mock others, but what does it actually mean?” The post sparked discussion on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News Plus board. “Chīgyū” (literally “cheese beef bowl”) is internet slang that caught on as a jab at unglamorous-looking men assumed to enjoy cheese gyūdon (beef rice bowls), but on the thread, comments split between “I know what it means, I just don’t get the mentality of people who say it” and “Honestly, I used to say it without even knowing what it meant,” fueling a debate over the term’s origin and how it’s actually used.

This guy's turned into a full-on Twitter comedian now.

Makes you wonder where the gap with Sandwich Man came from.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Chīgyū” is said to have started as slang tied to an illustration, and it’s typically used to mock someone’s looks or passive personality. What split opinion on this thread was the divide between those who see the term as being used with full knowledge of its meaning, and those who think even the people using it don’t really understand it and are just riding a trend. Because the word borrows the name of an actual product — cheese gyūdon — some replies also touched on how the chains that sell it might feel about it. Much internet slang tends to spread and take on a life of its own without a clear origin or fixed definition, and the fact that a celebrity felt the need to ask what the term even means is itself a good example of just how widespread — and how vaguely defined — this kind of slang can be.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News Plus) thread “[Entertainment] Black Mayonnaise’s Yoshida: “Some people online use the word ‘chīgyū’ to mock others, but what does it actually mean?”.”

  • Japan’s map turns almost entirely “Aeon-colored”: Waseda student’s supermarket power map shows the chain on top in 34 prefectures

A “prefecture-by-prefecture supermarket power map” made by a Waseda University student is making waves online. Created by cutting out each chain’s logo into the shape of each prefecture in Illustrator, it shows Aeon-affiliated chains (Aeon, Jusco, etc.) taking the top spot in 34 of Japan’s 47 prefectures, leaving the map of Japan almost entirely painted “Aeon color.” The thread lit up with people comparing the map to their own experience of their hometown, as well as discussion of supermarket industry history — how major chains like Daiei, Nichii (later Mycal), Seiyu, and Ito-Yokado once fought it out across the country, only to vanish one by one and be absorbed into Aeon’s dominance.

Japan’s map turns almost entirely “Aeon color”… Waseda student’s supermarket power map stuns the internet! Why Aeon tops the chart in 34 prefectures

Are all supermarkets really the same? Not even close. There are supermarkets where absolutely everything is cheap, ones known for strong private-brand products, ones stocked with fresh vegetables… Knowing how to use the different supermarkets in your area can massively boost your quality of life.

In other words, every supermarket chain has its own character, and expansion requires real strategy. It’s a free-for-all — like Japan’s warring states era.

    Re: #83
    No, that's not right.
    It's not a general merchandise store, but…

    Background and key points

This power map appears to compare chains specifically in the “general merchandise store (GMS)” category, so it’s worth noting that food-focused supermarkets are playing a different game entirely. As one commenter in the thread pointed out, “OK Store doesn’t count here since it’s a food supermarket” — this isn’t a simple head-count of stores. Aeon traces its roots to 1969, when Okadaya (Mie Prefecture), Futagi (Hyogo Prefecture), and Shiro (Osaka Prefecture) merged to form “Jusco.” Up through the 1990s, chains like Daiei, Nichii (later renamed Mycal), Seiyu, and Ito-Yokado were competing head-to-head across the country. Over time, many of these chains ran into financial trouble from overexpansion and were forced to retreat or scale back, and the industry gradually consolidated around Aeon, the chain with the most staying power. At the same time, it’s easy to overlook that a high store count doesn’t necessarily mean a high usage rate — as some commenters noted, “just because there’s one nearby doesn’t mean people actually shop there.”

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Japan’s map turns almost entirely “Aeon color”… Waseda student’s supermarket power map stuns the internet! Why Aeon tops the chart in 34 prefectures.”

  • 164cm Yoko Kumada’s Height Gap With Yuchami in Viral Two-Shot Stuns 5ch: “She’s THAT Tall?”

A two-shot photo of talent Yoko Kumada (164cm) standing next to famously tall model Yuchami went viral online and became a hot topic. So is he actually a shorty? ("Chibita," a stock nickname for a short guy)

    Background and Talking Points

The average height for Japanese women is said to be around 158cm, which actually puts Yoko Kumada’s 164cm above average. Still, she came off looking “small” simply because Yuchami’s height is so extreme — some in the thread even speculated that Yuchami’s real height must exceed her official profile figure of 176cm. That said, it’s worth remembering that celebrities’ published heights often don’t match their real measurements due to heels or agency rounding, and photo angles or camera placement can easily exaggerate an apparent height gap. The thread also branched into comparisons with other celebrities like Akiko Wada and Abareru-kun, expanding into a broader discussion of how height debates tie into how women’s looks get judged. Comments about her “real height” remain unverified speculation and should be read with that in mind.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Takaoka Sosuke is a former actor known for a string of headline-grabbing life events — a legal name change, two divorces, and a career switch to mixed martial arts — while Gaasii built his profile as a scandal-exposing YouTuber before becoming an upper house lawmaker, only to be expelled from the Diet. What the two men share is a position outside the mainstream of showbiz, which is the backdrop for comments like “they both know the industry’s light and dark sides inside out.” That said, the photo and Higashitani’s own caption only confirm that the two shared a meal together — neither specifies exactly what it is they supposedly “know inside and out.” On the thread, the contrast was striking: while the original article played up the pairing enthusiastically, 5ch reactions skewed skeptical and biting. The central points of debate were nostalgia from longtime users recalling the “Takaoka Festival” from 2channel’s early days, and questions about the psychology behind getting tattoos and how that squares with an acting career. Note that some posts speculating about the two men’s private lives and personal relationships are based on unverifiable rumor and have not been reflected in the body of this article.

What I'm genuinely worried about is that since it's supposedly going around the world,
the finals end up being like 'In Seoul, South Korea!' or something.

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Trans-America Ultra Quiz” ended in 1992, and a 2007 attempt to revive it as “Comedy Ultra Quiz” was poorly received — this marks the first full-fledged revival since then. Right now the show is only at the early stage of domestic first-round qualifiers, and details like overseas filming locations, the cast, and whether there will be forfeit-style penalty games have not yet been announced. Opinion on the thread split mainly over how to read the participant numbers: some argued the document-screening selection process naturally narrowed the field compared to the frenzied Korakuen Stadium era, while others saw it as simply reflecting “an age when it’s harder to get ordinary people to show up.” Another sticking point was how a quiz format can even work in an era when smartphones and generative AI are the norm, with many voicing doubt about how well that fits the old “use any method you like” rule. One thing readers could easily get wrong: only the two-night New Year’s broadcast slot has been decided so far — the scale of the show and whether overseas filming will actually happen remain unconfirmed.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports Breaking News+) thread “Nippon TV’s major special “Trans-America Ultra Quiz” domestic first-round qualifiers kick off, two-night New Year’s broadcast also confirmed — January 1 and 2, 2027.”

  • Ayami Nakajo Denies Marriage Rumors With Kōji Imada — Fans Ask, ‘Wait, Isn’t She Already Married?’

Actress Ayami Nakajo, appearing on MBS’s “Tsūkai! Akashiya Dentai” (lit. “Delightful! Akashiya TV Station”) on September 12, was asked about marriage rumors with comedian Kōji Imada and flatly shut them down, saying “I won’t.” Nakajo has co-starred with Imada since her teens as MC and assistant on Nippon TV’s “Another Sky,” and has called him a “benefactor of my career in showbiz.” After the segment aired, 5ch threads lit up — with posters pointing out that Nakajo is presumably already married to a non-celebrity, speculation about Imada’s taste in women, and plenty of people questioning why the question was even asked in the first place.

Ayami Nakajo, marriage rumors with Kōji Imada? “I won’t” — flatly denied… here’s why

Actress Ayami Nakajo (29) appeared on MBS TV’s “Tsūkai! Akashiya Dentai” (Saturdays 3pm, Kansai local) on the 12th. She spoke about comedian Kōji Imada (60), whom she calls a “benefactor of my career in showbiz.”

Nakajo has co-starred with Imada since her teens as MC and assistant on “another sky” (Nippon TV).

Probably just a staged bit to hook viewers who don't know about Nakajo — otherwise the whole thing just ends with "I'm already married."

Background and Key Points of This Story

The original article frames Nakajo as a single woman at an age when marriage is on her mind, but on 5ch, multiple posters independently raised the point that “Nakajo is surely already married” or “didn’t she marry a regular guy?” Some replies even circulated claims that Nakajo married an IT company executive years ago, leading to questions about whether the framing of the on-air question itself was just a bit staged for viewers who aren’t in the loop. The other major thread of discussion was curiosity directed at Imada himself — many commenters read a preference for “young hafu (mixed-race) women” from the lineup of assistants he’s cast on Another Sky over the years, pointing to past assistants who ended up marrying well-known athletes. That said, all of this remains speculation from an anonymous message board — there’s no official confirmation of Imada’s own views on marriage or whether he’s currently in a relationship.

The show had drawn major attention before it even aired, thanks to its pairing of two of variety TV’s top talents, Sashihara Rino (33) and Wakatsuki Chinatsu (42).

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

“Sashihara Chinatsu” was a Fuji TV late-night talk variety show that began this past April, drawing attention before it even aired as the first pairing of popular talents Sashihara Rino and Wakatsuki Chinatsu. The original article describes the reason for the cancellation as “embarrassing” but doesn’t specify what that reason actually was, and no mention of an official cancellation reason appears in the thread either. Opinion was mainly split over how to judge the show’s content — some criticized the production values and budget, while others felt the Sashihara–Wakatsuki pairing itself wasn’t a bad idea. Discussion also touched on Wakatsuki Chinatsu’s assertive on-air personality (which drew both love and hate) and her past career gap, but it’s worth noting these weren’t directly tied to the cancellation — they came up simply as personal opinions about the performers themselves.

Maybe she's the same type as those guys
Could be she's basically a 'male comedian' herself

Makes you wonder — if that history hadn't happened, Aoki might've ended up with some brutal nickname of her own that got her noticed too

Kind of like how Shinagawa got stuck with 'Osha-kuso' (a mocking mashup of 'stylish' and 'crap')

    Re: #69
'What are you looking at, huh?!'

Background and Key Points of This Story

Sayaka Aoki shot to fame in 2003 with her catchphrase “Where are you looking?!”, building a career on her sharp-tongued persona — but that same sharp tongue has repeatedly put her at odds with co-stars over the years. Her falling-out with Hiroiki Ariyoshi in particular has long been covered by entertainment media, and sure enough, posts naming Ariyoshi stood out in this thread too. At the same time, commenters dug up old rumors that Ariyoshi, Ryota Yamasato, and Yu Shinagawa had each been disliked by their own co-stars at various points, so the thread never actually settled on who really went silent on her — it just spiraled into speculation about the tangled relationships among comedians. There’s a gap between what Aoki herself actually said and the older anecdotes being dredged back up online, and keeping that distinction in mind makes the discussion easier to follow.
