  • Actress Kazuko Kato Stunned by Parking Fee After 2-Hour Movie Trip in Shinjuku: ‘I Was Shocked’

On the 13th, actress Kazuko Kato updated her blog to report that she’d watched “Mr. Nelson, Have You Ever Killed Anyone?” at a Shinjuku movie theater’s first showing of the day. She revealed that even the earliest screening was nearly sold out, and that she was stunned by how expensive the parking turned out to be. On 5ch, commenters pored over the entry and exit times to calculate the exact parking duration and cost, while others chimed in with remarks like “she should’ve taken the train or a taxi” or “shopping at a department store would’ve gotten her free parking” — opinions were split over the state of parking in central Tokyo.

    Re: #90
    It's always been that way.

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Parking lots attached to movie theaters in central Tokyo tend to have high base rates — even when the first 30 minutes are free, many charge a few hundred yen for every 10-15 minutes after that, so once you factor in the time spent moving to and from the theater and buying drinks, the total can easily run higher than expected. Commenters pointed out that she apparently didn’t know about the trick of getting free parking by spending a set amount at a department store, but plenty of others argued that parking rates in central Tokyo are simply absurd to begin with, so opinions were divided. It’s worth noting that the figure “entered at 9:05, exited at 11:38, 2 hours 3 minutes” comes from commenters’ own calculations — some pointed out the math seems off — and the exact total parking fee was never stated in the blog post itself.

  • Hashimoto Toru’s Take on ‘Chiikawa’ Sparks Controversy — Commentator Scolds Him: “That’s Not Good”

Toru Hashimoto, appearing on Mainichi Broadcasting’s “Seyanen!”, sparked an awkward moment when he remarked on the hit character “Chiikawa,” saying, “What is this, anyway? Isn’t it a dog or a cat? What is it? Is this supposed to be cute?” — prompting the show’s commentator to scold him with, “That’s not good.” The exchange happened as the program was covering news that the sushi chain Kura Sushi had ended its collaboration with “Chiikawa,” and Hashimoto reacted this way after being shown an image of the character. On 5ch, opinions split between those defending him (“it’s just personal taste, Hashimoto didn’t do anything wrong”) and those who saw it as “just his usual contrarian act,” while plenty of others expressed sheer surprise that he didn’t even recognize such a massively popular character.

Toru Hashimoto, former governor of Osaka Prefecture and lawyer, appeared on Mainichi Broadcasting’s “Seyanen!” on the 12th, rattling the studio with “inflammatory remarks” about the massively popular character “Chiikawa.”

That day’s program covered the news that Kura Sushi had cancelled its collaboration with “Chiikawa.” Ahead of that segment, an image of “Chiikawa” was put up on the monitor, and host and announcer Kaka Yamazaki asked, “Do you know how this character originally got its start?”

Background and Key Points of This Story

“Chiikawa” is a character born from creator Nagano’s four-panel manga, and it grew into a massively popular property through an anime adaptation and collaborations with restaurant chains like Kura Sushi. This remark drew attention because it came up while the show was introducing a separate piece of news — the end of that Kura Sushi tie-in — and Hashimoto’s blunt reaction, plus the on-air scolding that followed, got reported together as a package, which is part of why it caught fire. The thread split into roughly two camps: those defending him with “taste is subjective, Hashimoto didn’t do anything wrong,” and skeptics arguing he was “just playing his usual contrarian character and pretending not to know a hit series.” On top of that, plenty of people were simply baffled that Hashimoto, known for having a large number of children, wouldn’t recognize a character so deeply embedded even in kids’ culture. One thing worth clarifying so readers don’t get the wrong idea: this remark had nothing to do with the decision to end the Kura Sushi collaboration itself — it was just a reaction made while the show reported on a decision that had already been finalized.

Background and Talking Points on This Story

The article itself centers on the release of a recent photo, but opinion on the forum split into an “he’s doing fine” camp and a “can’t let your guard down” camp. The former took the speed of his discharge and the fact that he showed up at the office as proof of recovery, while the latter pointed to the asymmetry in the corner of his mouth and cheeks visible in the photo as a sign that some paralysis remains. Recovery after a stroke is said to follow a curve that depends heavily on how much time has passed since onset, and this was echoed in comments noting that “recovery is rapid for roughly the first six months after onset, but progress slows considerably after that.” Comparisons to Shigeo Nagashima and Beat Takeshi came up as well, though it’s worth noting that the location of their paralysis and the circumstances of their injuries differ, so their degree of recovery can’t simply be equated with Date’s.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Since retiring from professional football in 2010, Hidetoshi Nakata has been involved in travel, food, and wine ventures, and has repeatedly been reported gifting regionally sourced produce directly to celebrity acquaintances. In this case too, the thread surfaced information that Yo Oizumi had received pears from him on a separate occasion, suggesting this is less a one-off special gift and more a recurring gesture toward friends in the entertainment world. Matsuoka himself never named a specific price, so 5ch speculation like “over 1,000 yen each” remains just that — speculation. On the question of origin, one comment claimed Yamanashi also grows “La France” pears, but it’s worth noting that La France, a Western pear variety, is actually best known as a specialty of Yamagata Prefecture, and is easily confused with Yamanashi’s own nashi pears.

  • Ex-Unification Church Recruiters Hid Behind Movie Clubs — A Former Member Turned Pastor Explains Their Tactics

The Fukushima Minpo reports that Pastor Itaru Takesako of Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture — himself a former member of the Unification Church — has spent over 30 years helping people leave the group. Commenters on the thread pointed to specific recruitment tactics, such as disguising outreach as everyday activities like movie clubs or tennis circles, and posing as a volunteer group to make contact after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. Some pushed back, arguing that “the Unification Church’s problems are exaggerated,” while others accused critics of applying a political slant — leaving the thread split over where exactly the line between a cult and a religion should be drawn.

Pastor Itaru Takesako (59) of the Shirakawa Church, part of the United Church of Christ in Japan, in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, has spent more than 30 years working with members of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (the former Unification Church), helping them leave the group.

In fact, Takesako himself is a former member who left the Unification Church.

Once you start saying that, every otaku fandom counts as a cult too.
Well… can't really argue with that.

Background and Key Points of Debate

The Unification Church was ordered dissolved in 2023, but its practice of recruiting through disguised university clubs and volunteer groups has been pointed out for years — this article revisits that reality through a former member’s testimony. Where the thread split was over how “unusual” these tactics really are, with some commenters accusing critics of the recruitment methods of applying a political slant. One point readers may easily misunderstand is that the line between a religion and a cult isn’t clearly defined by law — it’s judged by a combination of factors like how closed off a group is and how aggressively it demands money — so the comments in this thread alone don’t establish its formal legal status.

I don't think he'd be easy to notice either
You honestly can't usually tell with celebrities out in public
People don't stare hard at faces anyway

    Background and Points of Debate

It’s not unheard of for celebrities to go unrecognized while walking around bare-faced, and this thread split over the reasons why. Three main theories emerged: the “indifference theory” — that city dwellers just aren’t in the habit of studying strangers’ faces; the “plain-face theory” — that without makeup or stage lighting, he simply looks like “some guy you’d see anywhere”; and the “generational-shift theory” — that his longtime fans have aged, while recognition among younger people has faded. Others pointed out a contrast: celebrities with distinctive looks, like Yoshikazu Ebisu or Kazuo Umezu, get spotted instantly — suggesting “recognizability” hinges more on distinctive appearance than on fame itself. Some baseless speculation linking changes in his looks to cosmetic surgery or aging also surfaced, but since it couldn’t be verified, it’s been left out of the main text.

Background and key points of this story

“Detective! Knight Scoop” is a long-running variety show produced by Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) that began airing in 1988. Keisuke Tachihara rose to popularity in the 1990s as one of the show’s marquee detectives, alongside Makoto Kitano and Naruki Nagahara. He also has a background with the Shiki Theatre Company, though the thread saw some conflicting claims about the details of his time there. It’s worth keeping in mind that this revelation comes solely from what Tachihara himself said on his own YouTube channel — the circumstances around his wife leaving and the specifics of his health issues go no further than his own account. On 5ch, comments speculating about his personal life, like “when the money’s gone, so is the relationship,” surfaced, but none of it has been verified. There was also disagreement over how to judge the show’s growing "Yoshimoto flavor," along with differing takes on it as a piece of Kansai local culture — highlighting how much impressions of the same show can vary by generation and region.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Egg freezing is a technology meant to guard against the age-related decline in fertility, and in recent years some local governments, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, have begun subsidizing testing and freezing costs for single women. However, it’s a common misconception that having frozen eggs guarantees a future pregnancy — survival and fertilization rates after thawing depend heavily on age and the number of eggs frozen. Reactions in the thread split into three camps: joking suggestions that she simply go find a husband, comments raising the real risks and medical caveats of egg freezing, and questions about her motives for revealing something so personal. The fact that Nakagawa is a recognizable former NHK announcer also fueled both the volume and the range of reactions.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Two separate incidents from different time periods came up in the thread as reasons Ishida got “sidelined”: eating out during the state of emergency in the COVID pandemic, and his 2016 announcement — later withdrawn — that he’d run for Tokyo governor. The show cancellations and penalty fees were mainly tied to the gubernatorial bid, and it’s reported that his wife, Riko Higashio, learned of his candidacy from the news without being consulted beforehand. Opinions in the thread were split over whether he actually had savings and over his choice of Funabashi as a location, with some posters reporting they’d actually seen him at the shop almost every day. The “reason he got sidelined” tends to get boiled down to a single incident, but it’s easy to overlook that it was really the result of multiple scandals piling up.

  • “Up-Front Should Create an Actress Division” — Hello! Project Fans Debate the Idea

A thread titled “Up-Front should establish an actress division” went up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, sparking debate over the second careers of former Hello! Project members. It’s not unusual for members to shift their focus toward acting — stage plays especially — after graduating, and the thread cited cases where the agency threw its full weight behind pushing a member only for it to go nowhere, alongside counterexamples of members who found real acclaim as actresses only after leaving the agency. Some posters argued that current members like Maeda Kokoro, Ebata, and Enaka have real potential as actresses, and info was shared about the upcoming film starring Suzuki Airi, “Sakuya wa Yareta Kamo” (roughly, “Last Night, I Might Have Killed Him”), opening October 23, 2026.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

Up-Front Group is the agency behind Hello! Project, and it has repeatedly tried to push its talent into film, TV drama, and stage work. As the thread notes, there was reportedly a plan for a dedicated acting division back around 2017, with claims that casting decisions were made without even consulting the members involved — a lingering source of distrust toward agency-led casting. Where opinions split was on how to judge “aptitude for acting”: some prioritized actual acting experience and track record, while others leaned on looks and stage presence. Worth noting: an “actress division” isn’t an actual existing program — it’s a fan proposal — and this article’s source material doesn’t give a full picture of the current contract status or activities of the members named.
