Rii Matsunaga: “Back When Juice=Juice Wasn’t Popular, We Could Barely Fill Past the Balcony’s First Row”

From our other sites

The story

Hello! Project’s Juice=Juice held the Osaka stop of their 5ROOMS tour on October 10, 2026. During the MC segment, Rii Matsunaga quoted King Gnu’s Daiki Tsuneta, who once said “music that sells isn’t the only good music,” and reflected: “Back when Juice=Juice wasn’t popular with the general public, even at NHK Osaka we could barely fill past the first row of the balcony. But looking back now, we were putting on great shows.” The comment was picked up on 5ch’s Hello! Project board, where reactions differed over how people remember the actual turnout from back then, and over how to talk positively about the group’s past slump.

5ROOMS Osaka Night, excerpt from Rii's MC: "I hold onto the words 'music that sells isn't the only good music' (said by King Gnu's Daiki Tsuneta). Generally speaking, back when Juice=Juice wasn't popular, even NHK Osaka was barely filled past the first row of the balcony. But looking back now, we were putting on great shows even then."

What's she even trying to say here lol
Just savoring the joy of finally being popular?
10AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:08
Re: #9
She's looking down on Angerme
11AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:08
So basically she's saying things were better before than they are now
16AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:09
She doesn't get how a buzz actually works
New fans vanish again once some time passes
34AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:14
Re: #16
Exactly this
At the end of the day they're just scrubs below Angerme
18AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:10
When exactly was it just one row filled on the 2nd floor at NHK Osaka?
I haven't seen it that empty since things reopened after COVID
19AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:10
They clearly leveled up starting from TRIANGROOOVE2
I think getting popular was inevitable at that point
20AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:10
So basically what she's saying is

"Angerme isn't popular, but they put on good shows"?
22AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:12
Of course you'd get sick of it if you're stuck singing garbage songs like "Kurakura" (a 2022 Juice=Juice single)
23AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:12
A dig at Morning Musume's golden age
31AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:13
Re: #23
That's because they didn't get popular through their own strength
25AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:12
It reads like consolation along the lines of "other groups aren't popular either, but they still put on good shows"
27AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:12
Juice=Juice was at its best back when Matsunaga was the new girl and the original members were still around
29AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:13
Rii Matsunaga: "None of the other Hello! Project groups besides Juice=Juice are popular"
30AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:13
Even Karin's probably smirking at this one
32AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:14
She probably just can't stand the current lineup of Juice=Juice
33AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:14
2022 through 2024 or so was rock bottom
36AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:14
The only reason they survived without being popular is because Morning Musume was bringing in the money — that's the whole reason they're even here today
Don't get it twisted
37AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:15
Yeah, "Kurakura" really is trash
At least she's being honest
39AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:15
I hope Ise gets to say the same thing herself someday too
40AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:15
They were just being kept in the shadow of Morning Musume this whole time
41AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:16
I mean, when it comes down to it, it was a group that only worked because of Karin Miyamoto
42AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:16
Juice=Juice: the group that saved a Hello! Project on the verge of collapse from relentlessly pushing a Morning Musume that was never going to sell
43AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:17
The reason they weren't popular was the original members' fault
44AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:17
To sum it up

Juice=Juice has always been cool
The world just finally caught up
46AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:18
The tours these past two years have really been well-made
Hello! Project DDs (fans who follow multiple groups) keep coming back for repeat shows
53AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:19
Rii's MC today was way too exaggerated
I've been going to NHK Osaka since before Yumerii joined, and it's never actually been that empty
Besides, the front row of the 2nd floor's center block is industry/guest seating anyway, so pretty much only Uemu's and Rii's families would've been sitting there
57AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:20
Re: #53
If a member says it, then it must be true
54AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:19
Wait, so the Juice=Juice members themselves think the current Juice=Juice is trash…
55AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:19
They've been putting on good shows ever since TRIANGROOOVE2
Anyone who's actually seen them live knows that
58AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:20
Isn't this just a group that ended once Karin Miyamoto graduated?
82AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:26
Re: #58
>Isn't this just a group that ended once Karin Miyamoto graduated?

That might be true for Miyamoto's own fans
But from the perspective of current Juice=Juice fans, this is the group that started once Miyamoto graduated
59AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:21
There's no way the family seating section was ever down to just one row
78AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:24
Was rock bottom around when Inaba bailed on the group?
80AnonymousOct 10, 2026 22:25
Re: #78
Yeah, it stayed at rock bottom for a while after that

Background and Points of Discussion

Juice=Juice is a group Hello! Project formally launched in 2013, and it’s well known among fans that attendance stayed low for a long stretch after their debut. Where the thread split was over how to take Matsunaga’s comment: as in post 53, some fans who were around at the time questioned whether her memory matches what the venue was actually like, arguing that “if you exclude the industry seats, it probably wasn’t that empty.” The claim itself was never fully verified within the thread. There was also a gap in tone over whether to read her comment about the lean years as a veiled jab at the group’s current rise in popularity, or simply as an honest, positive take on the past — with several posts bringing in other groups (like Angerme) for comparison. Centered on her own MC remarks as the primary source, it’s worth noting that these differing interpretations existed.
