  • Fukuoka Assembly Member Billed Taxpayers ¥200,000 a Head for Fancy French Dinner — “Tax-Funded Gourmet Tour” Exposed

A member of the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly billed taxpayers for a high-end French dinner costing roughly ¥200,000 per person, according to a report by Weekly Woman PRIME. With wine included on the tab, the outing has been dubbed a “tax-funded gourmet tour,” and the revelation came as part of the magazine’s ongoing series digging into goings-on inside Fukuoka’s prefectural government. On 5ch, reactions ranged widely — from curt, almost defiant one-liners, to calls to check whether other prefectures have similar spending, to demands that the corrupt assembly members and prefectural staff involved be forced to pay the money back, to resigned complaints about how voters are even supposed to vote people like this out.

That's probably why the small-fry assembly members keep getting harassed, or in extreme cases quietly 'disappeared' one after another — Hyogo's case involved the governor himself, so people could push back hard on that one, but… (a nod to the Hyogo Prefecture governor harassment scandal)

Background and Key Points of This Story

The source here is an installment of Weekly Woman PRIME’s ongoing series “Fukuoka Prefectural Government Is Changing — A Map for Reform,” which has been tracking local-government public spending over time. Part of the backdrop is that rules on how local assembly members’ policy-activity expenses and entertainment funds can be used — and how much of the receipts get disclosed — vary from one local government to the next, which makes the reality hard for outsiders to see. Opinions on the thread split mainly along two lines: how to read the seemingly unrepentant responses to the report, and whether this is a Fukuoka-only issue or something other prefectures should be investigated for too. Calls for repayment and institutional reform sat alongside more resigned voices arguing the only real recourse is voting the people responsible out at the next election. One thing worth flagging for readers: as of this report, it’s not yet clear whether the prefecture has acknowledged the spending or whether any repayment or disciplinary action has followed — this is still at the stage of allegations raised by the magazine’s series.

  • Pouring Soy Sauce on the Sashimi Pack Lid Instead of a Dish? A Veteran TV Commentator Scolds the “Skip-the-Dish” Trend — 5ch: “I Just Pour It Straight on the Fish”

On TV Asahi’s “Yoko Oshita Wide! Scramble,” the habit of dripping soy sauce onto a sashimi pack’s lid and using it as a makeshift dipping dish was introduced as part of the “skip-the-dish scene,” and after announcer Hiroki Yamazaki brought it up, a veteran commentator scolded him: “No, don’t do that… it’ll make you go senile.” The segment had originally been covering the time-saving trend of “knife-cancel” cooking — preparing meals with kitchen scissors instead of a knife — and touched on the lid habit as an offshoot of that. On 5ch, reactions split between defenders (“it’s just practical, what’s wrong with that”) and critics (“that’s cheap-looking,” “you shouldn’t do that in public”), and the discussion spread well beyond the lid itself — to people who pour soy sauce directly onto sashimi with no dish at all, and to gripes about conveyor-belt sushi places not providing soy sauce dishes in the first place.

    9/15 (Tue) 17:17

On the September 15 broadcast of TV Asahi’s “Yoko Oshita Wide! Scramble” (weekdays, 10:40 a.m.), while covering the growing trend of people cooking without a knife — dubbed the “knife-cancel scene” — announcer Hiroki Yamazaki’s comments about a related “cancel scene” drew a rebuke from a veteran commentator on the show.

The show covered how, as part of the broader “cancel scene” phenomenon — deliberately dropping everyday habits — more and more young people are cooking without a knife at all, a trend known as the “knife-cancel scene.” It’s believed to be driven by a desire to save time and boost efficiency (“taipa,” or time-performance), and the segment noted that a wide variety of kitchen scissors have emerged as knife substitutes, with scissors actually cutting cooking time compared to using a knife.

Apparently the original method was brushing soy sauce on with a basting brush, so that might actually be the "correct" way.
Before soy sauce could be mass-produced it was a precious commodity, so people probably didn't use dipping dishes that would leave sauce going to waste.

The "knife-cancel scene" that was in the news recently actually makes sense.
Even for filleting fish, ¥1,000–2,000 kitchen scissors can be easier to use than a knife.
I still use a deba knife for cutting a whole fish apart and a sashimi knife for skinning it, but
for an ordinary household, isn't a knife really only essential for cutting whole big vegetables or fruit?

    152AnonymousSep 15, 2026 18:24
    Re: #143
That's giving yourself way too much credit.
Buying pre-packaged sashimi already puts everyone on roughly the same level.
If you want to point to someone actually "beneath" that, it's the guy who opens the pack and eats some before he's even paid.

    Background and Talking Points

“Knife-cancel scene” refers to a time-saving mindset among younger people who finish all their cooking with kitchen scissors instead of a knife, and the show introduced this “dish-cancel” habit as an offshoot of that trend. It’s worth noting that using a sashimi pack’s lid as a makeshift dipping dish isn’t actually new — some people have been doing it for a while. Where the thread split was over whether to prioritize the practicality of having fewer dishes to wash, or the concern that it looks cheap and bad-mannered. The veteran commentator’s “you’ll go senile” remark was meant in the context of reduced sensory stimulation dulling cognitive function, but some replies in the thread misread it as being about food losing its flavor. There’s also a decent contingent who skip dipping dishes altogether and pour soy sauce directly onto the sashimi — a nuance that the headline alone, focused just on the lid, doesn’t really convey.

  • Oasis Announces Tour Starting May Next Year — No Japan Dates on the List; 5ch Reacts: ‘Maybe a Venue Shortage?’

British rock band Oasis announced on September 14 that they will tour Europe and North America starting in May next year. Last year’s tour — their first world tour since reuniting — included shows in Japan and generated major buzz, but the newly announced dates don’t include any Asian stops. In the thread, many pointed to a shortage of suitable venues (箱/hako, slang for concert venue) and the weak yen as possible reasons, while others noted that this tour itself is limited to Europe and North America, leading to mixed reactions.

[LONDON, Kyodo] British rock band Oasis announced on the 14th that they will kick off a tour of Europe and the United States starting in May next year. Oasis reunited and carried out a world tour last year, which included shows in Japan and drew major attention. The newly announced schedule does not include any Japan performances.

The tour opens on May 21 next year in Glasgow, Scotland, and travels through Germany, France, Italy, the United States and more, wrapping up with a show near London on September 19.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Oasis went on hiatus in 2009 before stunning fans with a reunion announcement in 2024, and last year they completed their first world tour in roughly 16 years. The newly announced tour, running from May 2026, opens in Glasgow, tours various European cities and the US, and wraps up near London in September — covering only Europe and North America. The article itself doesn’t fully address the fact that Asia, along with South America and Oceania, is also missing from the schedule. In the thread, some pointed to venue shortages and the weak yen as reasons, while others noted that this tour was simply limited to Europe and North America from the outset, splitting opinion between those who felt ‘Japan alone got cut’ and those who argued ‘other regions aren’t getting toured either.’ Some also voiced skepticism about the real state of Noel and Liam’s relationship, given their famously strained history.

He'll end up just like that natto shop (referencing a notorious natto-vendor scandal)

    Background and key points

In the initial response to a food poisoning incident, organizers and vendors typically bear liability, but how much is covered by facility liability insurance and similar policies depends entirely on the contract terms — hard for outsiders to judge from the outside. Opinions on the thread split between those who saw Komeo’s slow response as “insincere” or “an attempt to dodge responsibility,” and those who saw it as “just handling each case carefully, one at a time.” As for his explanation that “some emails aren’t coming through,” some dismissed it as a flimsy excuse, while others pointed out it could genuinely be a technical glitch tied to DMARC settings on the sender’s email provider — the truth remains unconfirmed at this point. Komeo is known for competing in the fight event “BreakingDown” and also runs several food businesses, including a ramen shop in Asakusa, making this incident a test of his mettle as a business owner.

  • Actress Asuka Takahashi Announces Marriage — Internet Reacts: “Who?”

Asuka Takahashi (38), who works across acting, modeling, and comedy, announced on her social media on the 15th that she has married actor Shogo Maruyama. She added, “He’s someone who makes me feel completely at ease when I’m with him.” While the news itself is a typical celebrity marriage announcement, 5ch threads were dominated by one key reaction — “Who even are these two?” — sparking a lively discussion about name recognition. With long careers as stage actors but few TV appearances, the couple turned out to be a case where recognition varies sharply depending on people’s viewing habits.

    Background and Key Points

Both Asuka Takahashi and Shogo Maruyama are primarily stage actors, with limited television exposure. Maruyama has appeared in dramas such as Code Blue 3, but while he’s known among theater fans, he’s less familiar to viewers whose main exposure is TV. The wave of “who?” reactions on 5ch reflects less the pair’s actual lack of fame than a gap between the celebrities the media covers and the celebrities general viewers actually encounter day to day. With more actors these days building careers mainly through stage work and streaming while rarely appearing on TV, similar “who?” reactions are likely to keep coming up. Some commenters also pointed out that news reports listed the woman’s age but not the man’s — worth noting as a comment on conventions in entertainment-news reporting.

Shinnosuke Kimoto (23) — the eldest son of the late singer Hideki Saijo, who died in 2018 at age 63, and who has since launched his own singing career — appeared on Nippon TV’s “Arikichi Zemi” for its popular “Gal Sone’s Gourmet Challenge” segment. Gal Sone was stunned by his sweet, princely looks, exclaiming he was “the spitting image of his dad in his younger days,” while Shin Sakagami reportedly said he was “an incredibly good singer” and Ariyoshi remarked that “his voice sounds just like his dad’s.” The reactions sparked a 5ch thread mixing nostalgic comments about his late father with more divided opinions on his looks and visual-kei-style image.

    Background and Points of Discussion

Hideki Saijo was a national superstar known for hits like “Young Man” and “Galandou,” who kept performing even after a 2011 stroke left him with lasting impairments, until his death in 2018 at age 63. His eldest son, Shinnosuke Kimoto, has begun his own singing career, and comparisons to his late father are hard to avoid whenever he appears in the media. The thread’s debate mainly centered on one question — does he actually resemble his father’s face? Some said his eyes and build were similar, while others argued he “lacks that star quality” or is simply “a different type” altogether. Note: this article excludes posts based on unverifiable rumors about the family’s background or lineage, since such claims cannot be fact-checked.

  • Actor Jiro Sato admits ‘I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been’ — diet vow and show plug spark mixed reactions

Actor Jiro Sato (57) updated his X account on September 15, admitting to a change in his physique with the words “Right now, I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life.” While the post rallied himself with “I’ve got to work hard on my diet,” it also doubled as a plug for his appearance on NHK’s “Rekishi Tantei” (History Detectives), airing the next day, the 16th. Sato confessed, “Right now, I’m the biggest I’ve ever been. Re: #72
'This will be my last post' probably just meant he'd stop posting about the whole mess with Fuji TV, right?

Background and key points of this topic

This year, Jiro Sato has repeatedly drawn attention for his social-media remarks amid reports of harassment toward a co-star and reports that Ai Hashimoto refused to work with him again. He’s also known for a past statement declaring a certain post would be his “last one,” so without that context it’s hard to see why this lighthearted mix of a diet confession and show plug drew so much reaction. Opinions in the thread split two ways: those who took it as simple weight-gain banter, and those who criticized the resumption of his social-media activity itself as “saying one thing and doing another” or as being purely for show promotion. It should be noted, for clarity beyond what the article itself states, that the only things Sato explicitly states in the post are his weight gain, his resolve to diet, and the announcement of his appearance on “Rekishi Tantei” airing the next day, the 16th — he does not directly address the past harassment allegations himself.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Actor Jiro Sato suddenly confesses: ‘Right now, I’m the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life… I’ve got to work hard on my diet’ — also announces TV appearance.”

  • Ramen Jiro Kameido Bans Photos of Chiikawa Creator’s Signed Art — 5ch Reacts: ‘Just Stop Displaying It Then’

Ramen Jiro’s Kameido shop revealed via its official X account that while it isn’t technically banning photos of the signed art board by Chiikawa creator Nagano on display inside the store, it’s now asking customers to check with staff before snapping a picture — the result of a flood of customers taking unauthorized photos, some of whom hurled abuse at staff when asked to stop. The surge is tied to a wave of fans visiting specifically for the art board since the Chiikawa movie’s release. On 5ch, opinions split between those questioning the shop (“why display it at all if this is such a problem?”) and those questioning the new rule itself (“what’s wrong with snapping a photo without asking first?”).

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for “Ramen Jiro Kameido” posted an update by the 15th explaining why photographing the signed illustration board by popular manga “Chiikawa” creator Nagano, on display in the shop, is completely off-limits.

The shop’s official X account posted: “Thanks as always for your support. Lately, thanks to the Chiikawa movie, we’ve had a lot more Chiikawa fans stopping by — thank you! We’ve noticed a few posts saying people couldn’t find Nagano-sensei’s signed art board, so just so everyone knows: it’s up on the left, right as you walk in the entrance! Hope that helps.”

    Re: #57
Sounds like it's because some people were photographing the staff too

    Background and Points of Debate

The backdrop is a surge of Chiikawa fans visiting after the movie’s release, temporarily driving up the number of customers coming specifically for the signed art board. Nagano has a history with Jiro, including a past promotional tie-in featuring Chiikawa cosplay, and reportedly sent the art board because of a connection to “Shima Jiro,” a Jiro-styled shop that appears in the movie. Where the thread split was over what the shop’s announcement actually meant — whether photography itself was banned, or whether the new policy was simply to check with staff first. The notice leans toward the latter, but the “photo ban” framing in headlines left many asking “why does checking first even matter?” As for the reasoning behind requiring a heads-up, some in the thread suggested it’s meant to prevent trouble like staff or other customers ending up in photos accidentally — making it less a blanket crackdown and more a customer-service precaution. At the same time, opinions split between blaming the shop for displaying the art board in the first place and blaming the customers who took unauthorized photos or lashed out verbally, leaving the question of where the real fault lies unresolved.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Ramen Jiro Kameido announces signed art board by ‘Chiikawa’ creator is completely off-limits for photos: ‘Way too many people just take photos without asking… some even curse us out’.”

    Re: #133
Wasn't that the one where TV commentator Akemi Masuda made a big fuss going "it's her period, it's her period"?

Background and key points of this story

Losing control of bodily functions due to fatigue or stress during endurance events isn’t actually all that rare. In racewalking and ultra-distance running, there have been multiple past reports of athletes wetting or soiling themselves mid-race — even with portable toilets on course — simply because they couldn’t make it in time. The examples raised in the thread, like the “1984 LA Olympics women’s marathon runner” or various racewalkers, include cases with different underlying causes, such as heat-related dizziness or dehydration, so it’s worth being careful not to lump all these symptoms together as the same thing. It’s also unclear from the original article whether the event had an explicit rule classifying this kind of situation as grounds for disqualification. The real core of the criticism directed at the organizers isn’t so much about “whether it was right to let her continue by her own choice,” but rather the ambiguity in the organizers’ standards for how far they had defined the hygiene and safety impact on other competitors.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Entertainment/Sports News+) thread “Her shorts were soaked between the legs… Australian female athlete who wet herself but kept competing anyway says “If you’re going to do it, give it everything” and “Well, a win’s a win” — organizers hit with a wave of criticism.”

In the thread, some questioned how much say Tsunku actually still has over member selection and personnel decisions these days, while others pointed to inadequate training for the 18th-generation members. Still others pushed back, arguing that skill isn’t necessarily what idols need, leaving opinion divided.

You'd do better to look at successful idols from other agencies — otaku don't actually want skill. A lot of idol otaku are themselves socially disadvantaged, so they go for immature, fragile-looking girls — the submissive type who seems like she'll do whatever you say. (Juice=Juice getting attention is a pretty exceptional case.)

I do think they could use a couple more members who can really sing. That said, the choreography overall is so intense that it looks tough to sing through. When other groups cover Morning Musume songs, unless you're at the level of Dambara, Nishida, or Kawanishi, people tend to struggle pretty badly.

Back in the ASAYAN days, the golden-era members were basically hand-picked additions chosen directly by Tsunku, right? Like the Chinese members Junjun and Linlin. "Mitsui, come on down. Fukumura, come on down." I can't see it any other way — Tsunku was personally selecting members at least up through that era. Isn't it more that his authority over personnel dropped to zero once he stepped down as general producer?

Momusu has more skill than the Sakamichi groups or Kawa Lab. But the Sakamichi groups and Kawa Lab outsell Momusu anyway. The problem is the songs and how they're marketed. As for Juice=Juice, it's simply that Aoi Yamazaki's songs are good. Tsunku's more difficult songs just don't tend to go viral.
    113AnonymousSep 15, 2026 13:53
    Re: #111
Isn't it just that Morning Musume's skill is so lacking that the songs look hard by comparison?

Background and key points of this discussion

Tsunku♂ held the position of Hello! Project’s general producer around 2004, but stepped back from that authority after his health declined, and is now said to be involved mainly in providing songs. This history is why the thread debated whether he still has any say over personnel matters. Juice=Juice gets held up as a vocally strong group partly because members like Yamato Dambara are highly regarded even within the industry. Meanwhile, Morning Musume’s 18th-generation intake marked an unusual generational shift in that every new member is in their early teens, and the underlying frustration is that the hoped-for “ace who can really sing” never materialized among them. There was also an argument that otaku want a sense of protectiveness more than technical skill — but that’s a generalization about the idol market, and it’s worth separating from any judgment of Tsunku’s remarks themselves.
