My mom suddenly developed a soba allergy
and can't go to Japanese restaurants that serve soba anymore.
Even without eating any, the steam alone triggers an attack.
What really surprised us was when I went to an authentic soba shop and came home — apparently it had gotten on my clothes and body, and my mom, who was just at home, had an attack from that.
Ever since, soba shops are off-limits for the whole family, and if we absolutely have to go, we head straight to the laundry and bath the moment we get home.

Eating a lot of something can sometimes make an allergy suddenly kick in out of nowhere.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Nippon TV’s “The! Sekai Gyouten News” allergy-testing segment has drawn big reactions before, with episodes featuring detailed celebrity test results becoming hot topics. This time, the focus was on cases where symptoms appear just from inhaling a smell or vapor without eating anything — and there are indeed medically documented cases of people reacting to vaporized compounds from things like soba broth, alcohol, or garlic. Where opinions on the thread split was over “crab sticks” (kanikama): while they don’t actually contain real crab meat, some products add “crab extract” for flavoring, and the easily-overlooked fact is that people with crab allergies could unknowingly eat it if they don’t check the ingredient label. There was also a story like Ogi from Ogiyahagi’s, who happily ate crab for years before suddenly developing an allergy — a reminder that food allergies can also appear suddenly later in life.

  • Angerme’s Osaka Concert Ends General Ticket Sales With Floor Seats Still Empty — 5ch Reacts: ‘Um, There Are Still 4 Shows Left…’

On Hello! Project’s board on 5ch, it became a hot topic that general ticket sales for Angerme’s Osaka concert had ended while seats on the first floor remained unsold. Commenters pointed to concrete factors: the recent graduation announcement of a member who had been with the group until just recently failed to boost attendance, the seating capacity of the venue, Orix Theater, and the gap in drawing power compared to sister group Juice=Juice. Opinions split between the view that “female fans are fickle, and it’s male fans who stick around until the end” and the view that “management was unreasonable to book three shows when the group has no members from Osaka” — disagreeing over whether to blame fan behavior or the agency’s decisions.

    Re: #69
Juice=Juice's tour capacity is actually bigger, so don't complain
The only ones with room to complain are Tsubaki Factory, BEYOOOOONDS, and OCHA NORMA

    Background and Points of Debate

Angerme is a mid-tier group within Hello! Project, and the scale of tour venues is decided by the agency based on the group’s drawing power. It’s worth noting that the “popular/unpopular” or “disliked” judgments about specific members raised in the thread are purely speculation on an anonymous message board, not officially released figures or a reflection of the member’s actual standing. Likewise, the notion that “female fans are fickle while male fans stick around till the end” is an old piece of received wisdom among idol fandoms, but it’s an impression rather than something backed by hard data. On the other hand, how to judge the agency’s choices on venue capacity and number of shows is a separate question from raw attendance figures, and opinions diverged sharply on that point — the thread’s defining feature is this interplay between theories about fan temperament and theories about the group’s management strategy.

  • White Sox Stunned: Walk-Off Loss With Two Outs in the 9th — Murakami Goes 0-for-4 with 4 Whiffs as Series Splits 1-1, Gap Now 0.5 Games

On September 15, the Chicago White Sox suffered a stunning comeback walk-off loss, 6-7, on the road against the Guardians in Cleveland. The go-ahead runs scored with two outs in the ninth, stretching the gap behind the AL Central-leading Guardians to 0.5 games. Munetaka Murakami, who played in the game, went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts and a walk. Over his last 14 games since September began, he’s batting just .098 (5-for-51), with his OPS cratering to .436. In the 5ch reaction thread, users debated the causes behind this extreme slump, compared him to Kazuma Okamoto — who has been adjusting well around the same time — and discussed batting order and usage decisions.

    109AnonymousSep 16, 2026 12:19
    Re: #104
    That'd be Chris Carter.
The Brewers DFA'd him the same year he led the league in home runs.
Well, that was before the universal DH too.

    Background and Talking Points

“OPS,” mentioned in the article, combines on-base percentage and slugging percentage, and a mark around .800 is generally considered excellent in MLB. Murakami has cratered to .436 over his last 14 games — a serious level of decline for a middle-of-the-order hitter. In the thread, users focused less on the sheer strikeout total and more on his prolonged slump with runners in scoring position (with some noting a roughly .107 average with two outs and runners in scoring position). That said, “full-swing” sluggers who pile up strikeouts alongside home runs aren’t unusual in modern MLB — though there are cautionary precedents too, like Chris Carter, mentioned in the thread, who was released despite leading the league in home runs because of his high strikeout rate. Whether Murakami can hold his starting job and qualify for the batting title will be one storyline to watch alongside his team’s fight for first place in the division.

Shukan Bunshun has reported that a 60th birthday celebration for Juri Fujishima, former president of the ex-Johnny’s agency, was held on July 20 at an upscale restaurant in Roppongi, with numerous current and former STARTO ENTERTAINMENT talent turning out for the occasion. When Fujishima announced the agency’s dissolution in October 2023, she stated she would “focus solely on compensation and emotional support for the talent, and have no involvement in any other operations.” The agency itself told Bunshun that “the talent organized it as a surprise.” Reactions on 5ch were split between those who saw no issue with it as a private celebration and those questioning why someone who was supposed to have stepped back from management still has such close ties to the talent.

If she'd actually gone back into management that'd be a real problem, but this is just a heartwarming little story

    Background and Points of Debate

Following the 2023 revelation of sexual abuse by agency founder Johnny Kitagawa, Juri Fujishima announced the dissolution of the agency that October, stating she would focus on compensation and support for the talent. The agency was renamed STARTO ENTERTAINMENT, with Hideaki Higashiyama taking over as the new president. Opinions on the thread split over how to reconcile Fujishima’s stated departure from management with the fact that so many former agency talent personally turned out for her private birthday celebration — some saw it as nothing more than an extension of personal relationships, while others suspected she still retains real influence behind the scenes. Note that Fujishima’s nickname “Julie” is also the stage name of singer Kenji Sawada, and some posts in the thread appear to have confused the two.

  • Hiroshima’s Kikuchi Accused by Ex-Teammate: ‘He Held a Lighter-Heated Fork to My Neck’

Hiroshima’s Ryosuke Kikuchi had been in fine form — hitting safely in three straight games against Yakult from September 13-15 and batting cleanup for the first time in three years — when, on September 16, the digital edition of “Weekly Bunshun” named him in a report alleging he had assaulted a former teammate, Ryutaro Hazuki. According to a team insider, during a joint voluntary training camp in Shizuoka Prefecture, Kikuchi got Hazuki, who doesn’t drink, drunk, and after Hazuki dozed off, pressed a fork heated with a lighter against his neck. Masaya Yano and Yuya Nirasawa, now with the industrial-league team NTT East, are also said to have been present. On the forum, opinions split not just over condemning the alleged assault, but over whether it was right for Hazuki to testify under his real name.

In the September 13 game against Yakult, Hiroshima’s Ryosuke Kikuchi batted cleanup for the first time in three years, and with the team trailing by three runs in the 8th inning, he hit an RBI double to left field for the team’s only run of the game. The next day, back in the No. 2 spot, he reached base on a single to right field in the first inning to spark the rally that opened the scoring, contributing to a 3-0 shutout win. On the 15th, he added another single to right in the first inning, then drove in a run with a groundout to third in the second. The 36-year-old second baseman has now hit safely in three straight games and remains an active part of the first-team roster.

Then Kikuchi’s name surfaced in an entirely different context. On September 16, the digital edition of Weekly Bunshun named Kikuchi outright, reporting allegations that he had assaulted a former teammate, Ryutaro Hazuki.

According to the article, during a joint voluntary training camp in Shizuoka Prefecture, Hazuki, who doesn’t drink, was made to drink at a meal, and after he dozed off, Kikuchi pressed a fork he’d heated with a lighter against his neck, a team insider testified. Masaya Yano and Yuya Nirasawa, now with the industrial-league team NTT East, are also said to have been present.

    Background and Talking Points

The Weekly Bunshun report centers on an incident during a “joint voluntary training camp” in Shizuoka Prefecture. These camps are informal, off-contract training sessions that young and mid-career players organize across team lines, and the fact that the alleged witnesses — Masaya Yano and Yuya Nirasawa (now with NTT East) — were themselves Hiroshima players suggests this stayed entirely within the team. The forum debate centered less on the alleged assault itself and more on whether Hazuki was right to testify under his real name, pitting those who praised the disclosure against those who called it cowardly for dragging others down with him. Note that some comments referencing “zombie cigarettes” point to an unrelated drug scandal involving a different player, which is easily confused with this case. Comments trivializing the “guts burn” hazing practice, or making tasteless jokes tied to Hiroshima and atomic bomb survivors, are a separate matter from the seriousness of the reported conduct and have been excluded from this article.

  • NHK Chairman Bows in Apology for Firing Staffer Over Sexual Misconduct — and for On-Air Talent’s Abuse of Employee — Vows to Rethink Boozy ‘Dinner Parties’

At its regular press briefing on September 16, NHK revealed it had handed down the harshest possible penalty — dismissal — to a reporter in his twenties for sexually touching a colleague without consent. At the same briefing, Chairman Tatsuhiko Inoue bowed his head for about five seconds while remaining seated to apologize for a separate case disclosed last month, in which a staff member was driven to take leave or resign after suffering unwanted sexual abuse from a program’s on-air talent. The chairman said the two incidents should not be treated as isolated cases but as a reflection of problems across the organization as a whole, adding that while both involved dinner gatherings where alcohol was served, “this isn’t meant to condemn such gatherings themselves.” On 5channel, users questioned why the chairman apologized while seated and why the talent responsible in the harassment case still hasn’t been named.

NHK held its regular press conference on the 16th at its Tokyo headquarters. It announced that, effective the 9th of this month, it had issued its harshest penalty — dismissal — to a reporter in his twenties who engaged in unwanted sexual physical contact.

Chairman Tatsuhiko Inoue, present at the briefing, also apologized for the case disclosed at last month’s emergency press conference, in which a staff member was driven to take leave or resign after suffering unwanted sexual abuse at the hands of a program’s on-air talent. Citing damage to “viewers’ trust,” the chairman bowed his head for roughly five seconds while remaining seated.

Regarding both cases, he stated that they should not be viewed as “individual, isolated incidents” but rather prompt a reexamination of the organization as a whole. He also noted that since both cases involved gatherings where alcohol was consumed, “this isn’t meant to condemn dinner gatherings that involve drinking.”

    There's no sexual assault here.

Setting the victim aside, if the perpetrator's name never comes out and there's no criminal complaint filed, then as far as anyone's concerned the incident never happened.

If it's just a private settlement between individuals, there's no obligation to announce it publicly anyway.

In other words, no sexual assault ever took place.

Background and Key Points of This Story

NHK is a network with a well-known history of alcohol-related scandals, dating back to the 2018 incident involving TOKIO’s Tatsuya Yamaguchi. This time, two separate cases — “a reporter dismissed for misconduct” and “a staffer sexually abused by an on-air talent” — were addressed at the same press conference, which led to some confusion on the forum thread about whether they were connected. NHK itself framed the two not as isolated incidents but as symptoms of a broader organizational problem, without disclosing the real names or exact relationship between the perpetrators and victims involved. The thread mainly split over two points: whether it was appropriate for the chairman to apologize while remaining seated for roughly five seconds, and frustration that the talent responsible in the harassment case still hasn’t been named. Some pointed out that, unlike commercial broadcasters, information rarely leaks out of NHK to the tabloid press. Meanwhile, the chairman’s comment that he wasn’t condemning “dinner gatherings involving alcohol” reads more like a nod toward preventing recurrence than a genuine effort to get to the root cause — and the briefing gave no real indication of what concrete measures, if any, will actually follow.

    Re: #72
A keychain has a metal ring so you can actually attach keys to it, but marker accessories are a small closed rubber loop, so they're not really made for holding keys.

    Background and Points of Debate

“Marker Accessories” is a series of small rubber-ring parts meant for marking umbrellas or bags, and it appears to have taken off once the previously popular “sticker”-style gacha boom cooled down. Since the plain rings themselves are available at 100-yen shops, the appeal is said to lie less in practical use and more in the collectible value of the character charms inside. Bandai Namco Experience’s PR department gave only “to ease overcrowding” as the reason for the sales suspensions, without addressing the specifics at individual stores. That left thread posters split over whether the lines were mainly driven by resellers or simply a genuine collecting boom, and whether reselling a mass-producible item could even turn a profit in the first place. Though not mentioned in the article, suspensions of popular capsule-toy items have happened repeatedly in recent years, and stores withholding the specific reasons is nothing unusual.

  • VIVANT Director Katsuo Fukuzawa Broke Assistant Director’s Bone in Power-Harassment Incident, Gets Off With a Slap on the Wrist — 5ch: “Fuji TV Got Trashed Just for Yelling”

TBS drama VIVANT Season 2’s set became the scene of an incident, according to Weekly Bunshun: director Katsuo Fukuzawa shoved an assistant director off a stepladder, causing a fracture that will take a month to heal. Per Bunshun, TBS treated the matter as classified information and handed down only a light punishment. Fukuzawa is also known as the great-great-grandson of Yukichi Fukuzawa (the historical figure on Japan’s 10,000-yen bill). On 5ch, discussion centered on exactly what happened — “he didn’t punch him, he knocked the ladder out from under him” — alongside a strong sense of unfairness: “Fuji TV got dragged through the mud just for yelling at an actress, but TBS breaks someone’s bone and gets away with a light punishment?” A few posts, however, seemed to excuse the violence outright, leaving opinions split.

VIVANT Season 2, the smash-hit sequel following the further adventures of undercover agent Yusuke Nogi, has been a huge success. But behind the scenes, harassment by the director was reportedly rampant on set — serious enough that TBS treated it as classified information. And then, the incident finally happened!

It happened last December, at TBS’s Midoriyama Studio in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture. During a rehearsal for the hit drama VIVANT, an angry shout suddenly rang out across the set.

“How many times do I have to tell you the same thing?!”

    Re: #150
Doesn't count since the victim wasn't a woman

Background and Key Points of This Story

Under Japan’s power-harassment prevention law (a 2020 amendment to the Act on Comprehensive Promotion of Labor Measures), employers are legally required to take steps to prevent workplace harassment. Film sets, however, are considered an industry where a closed hierarchy topped by the director tends to persist, largely shielded from outside scrutiny. A fracture requiring a month to heal is serious enough that, depending on the exact circumstances, it could amount to criminal assault — but the reporting so far rests solely on Bunshun’s own investigation, and it’s not yet clear how TBS will explain the details of its disciplinary response. Within the thread, descriptions of what actually happened varied from post to post — some said he “kicked the ladder,” others said he “shoved” it — so the facts should be checked against Bunshun’s original article text. Many commenters also drew comparisons to Fuji TV’s past scandal, but how severe a punishment turns out to be depends heavily on the specifics of each case and the company’s own response policy, so such simple comparisons have their limits.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Sports & Entertainment News+) thread “[Bunshun] TBS Is Covering Up VIVANT Director Katsuo Fukuzawa’s (62) “Fracture Power-Harassment” — Month-Long Injury, Ridiculously Light Punishment [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Modern Pentathlon Scraps ‘Equestrian,’ Replaces It With a SASUKE-Inspired Event — 5ch: ‘Boring, Nobody Even Falls in the Mud’

According to a Yomiuri Shimbun report, at the Asian Games currently underway in Anjo, Aichi Prefecture, the modern pentathlon’s “equestrian” event has been abolished for humanitarian and other reasons, replaced by a new event called “Obstacle” starting September 16. It’s an obstacle-course race rooted in the Japanese TV show “SASUKE,” reportedly featuring obstacles like stepping stones, ladders, and wall climbs. On 5ch, comments ranged from claims that the real-life difficulty is easier than the original SASUKE, to debate over whether it’s accurate for reports to frame it as “SASUKE being adopted,” to concerns about what will happen to the horses that had been used in the now-scrapped equestrian event.

Obstacle Race Replaces Equestrian… Competition Begins in Anjo on the 16th

A new event called “Obstacle” has been added to the modern pentathlon at the Asian Games (sponsored by the Yomiuri Shimbun), with competition set to begin tomorrow, the 16th, at Anjo City General Sports Park. The traditional “equestrian” event has been scrapped for humanitarian and other reasons, marking the first-ever addition of an obstacle race rooted in the popular Japanese TV show “SASUKE.” Clearing stepping-stone footholds, leaping up to overhead ladders, sprinting up walls… The familiar “ultimate survival” format looks set to draw attention from a wide range of age groups. Re: #110
What's being abolished is just the equestrian event within the modern pentathlon.
Show jumping, eventing, and the rest continue as normal.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The abolition of modern pentathlon “equestrian” isn’t a first tied only to this Asian Games — it traces back to an incident at the Tokyo Olympics equestrian competition, where a scene of an athlete striking a horse to force it to jump drew international criticism, prompting the International Modern Pentathlon Federation to move forward with overhauling the event. This Asian Games is one instance of the resulting new “Obstacle” event being adopted, and as pointed out in the thread, the essential difference from SASUKE — a TV show that pushes difficulty to the absolute extreme as a standalone competition — is that this obstacle course is designed to create score differentials across five events. Meanwhile, the debate over the media’s framing that “SASUKE was adopted” appears to stem from the fact that SASUKE itself was a pioneer of the obstacle-race genre, having influenced similar shows overseas (such as Ninja Warrior), which makes it ambiguous where to draw the line on what counts as “SASUKE-derived.” As for the concerns about what happens to the horses because of the equestrian ban, some comments appeared to misunderstand that it’s only the modern pentathlon’s equestrian event being discontinued — not equestrian sports as a whole.

Maybe if he took up yoga and became buddies with Tsurutaro Kataoka, nobody would worry about him. (Kataoka is a Japanese actor famous for his yoga practice and lean look well into his 60s.)

Looks like he's dieting without any exercise.

He dropped weight fast after Ohtani glared at him, didn't he?

I wonder if he actually got a diabetes diagnosis. If so, that's great news — it means insurance covers Mounjaro. I got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes myself and lost 25kg in six months on Mounjaro. People I haven't seen in a while are shocked when they see me. Sure, it might age your face a bit, but all my bad bloodwork numbers improved and my fatty liver cleared up, so health-wise it's a win. Looking older is a small price to pay for that.

Lately even his commentary sounds like his brain isn't keeping up, it's honestly a little scary to listen to.
He really needs to eat more.

    Looking older… well, he's 54, isn't that just normal?
This is about the right look for his age.

So even though he has a wife, he was the one eating however he wanted? If he were single, a messed-up diet would make more sense, but…

It's not like he's a salaryman — he probably doesn't eat at home that often.

His hairstyle always bugs me, it looks like something out of a Drifters comedy skit. (The Drifters were a legendary Japanese slapstick comedy troupe.)

My blood sugar's at 240 too, I guess I should follow his lead.

He's on the thin side, but still within a normal weight range, so I don't see the problem.
    45AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:53
He got told he was pre-diabetic and lost weight because of it — if anything that's a good thing, no?
    48AnonymousSep 16, 2026 00:56
Normally once you're past 50 your body settles down to about this.
Whether it's the Motoki pattern, some illness or surgical condition, or just eating less as you age.

It's the comedians who stay hugely overweight forever that are the weird ones.

Diabetes has nothing to do with me, but it really is bad enough for your body to cause weight loss this drastic.

    Here you go

    Background and Talking Points

The phrase “basically diabetic” appears to describe a “pre-diabetic” stage, where blood sugar or HbA1c levels are close to the diagnostic threshold — wording doctors often use to convey the situation without issuing a formal diagnosis. In recent years, rapid weight loss via GLP-1 receptor agonists (such as Mounjaro) has become a hot topic, and the thread included posts from users sharing their own treatment experiences. On the other hand, specific speculation about Motoki’s diet or personal relationships could not be confirmed in the original article and amounts to baseless conjecture, so it has been excluded here. Rapid weight loss can result from treating lifestyle-related disease, but it can also stem from other underlying conditions, so it’s worth noting that the cause can’t be determined from appearance alone.
