It's used in things like the market saying "futsuka shimpo wa areru" (the market turns rough on the second trading day) and place names like Marumori-cho Hippo. Apparently both usages carry the meaning of "beginning."

    Background and Talking Points

Kaho rose to fame as a child actor in Sekisui House’s “ReHouse” commercial series, then landed her first leading film role in 2007’s “Tennen Kokekko.” Her newly announced husband, Sora Hokimoto, works as a film director and musician rather than an actor — a pattern that echoes a recent trend of actresses marrying film directors or business owners. The kanji “甫” isn’t one people run into often in daily life, but it appears in the old market saying “futsuka shimpo wa areru” and the place name Marumori-cho Hippo, where it’s said to carry the meaning of “beginning.” The thread also raised rumors about her relationships with former co-stars, but these are unconfirmed reports based on tabloid coverage — neither Kaho nor her agency has officially confirmed any of them.

  • ‘The Dangers in My Heart’ Wraps Up After 8.5 Years — Creator Thanks Fans, Promises ‘Plenty More to Enjoy’

“The Dangers in My Heart” reached its final chapter with the September 15 update, closing out a serialization that ran eight and a half years since its March 2018 debut. The final 14th volume goes on sale November 6, and to mark the series’ completion, fellow manga artists have contributed celebratory illustrations, alongside a reader-participation “#BokuYaba Congratulatory Telegram” campaign. Creator Norio Sakurai shared comments thanking readers and looking back on the series’ run. On 5ch, discussion centered on how the story shifted from its early, shadow-tinged psychological tone to a straightforward romantic comedy in its later chapters, comparisons to similarly themed works, and mixed reactions to the spinoff series.

The manga “The Dangers in My Heart” (Boku Yaba) reached its final chapter today, September 15, with an update on Champion Cross. The series closes out eight and a half years of history since its March 2018 launch. The final 14th collected volume goes on sale November 6. To celebrate the series’ completion, fellow manga artists have released congratulatory illustrations, and a reader-participation campaign called “#BokuYaba Congratulatory Telegram” has launched, inviting fans to send in messages to the series.

Marking the series’ conclusion, creator Norio Sakurai thanked readers: “Everyone! Thank you so much for always supporting ‘The Dangers in My Heart.’ I’m truly relieved to have safely and soundly wrapped up a serialization that ran for more than eight years…!”

Sakurai went on to reflect on the eight years of serialization: “This is all thanks to everyone who watched over the series so warmly, and everyone who was involved with it. Looking back on these eight years, I really feel that ‘Boku Yaba’ was blessed with so many wonderful connections — much like Kyoutarou Ichikawa, who started out as a hopelessly gloomy loner, this was a work that grew through all kinds of encounters. I’d be happy if it could have been even a small light for readers too.”

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

“The Dangers in My Heart” began in March 2018 in Akita Shoten’s Champion Cross, initially drawing attention for its distinctive tone, with protagonist Kyoutarou Ichikawa’s inner monologue often described as almost psychopathic. The series later shifted toward a more conventional school rom-com centered on his romance with heroine Anna Yamada, and its popularity grew further after a TV anime adaptation aired in 2023. It’s worth noting that the reasons behind this shift in direction — a topic of discussion in the thread — have never been officially explained, and remain speculation on commenters’ part. The “inkya x popular kid” setup is also a common template across the genre in recent years, and the works commenters compared it to are being discussed in that context. The mixed reception toward the spinoff is likewise a fairly typical reaction once an original series wraps up.

  • CD Sales Are Surging in the US — But a New Study Finds Nobody’s Actually Listening to Them

Even as streaming has become the dominant way people listen to music, Hypebeast reports that CD sales have actually been climbing in the US over the past several years. Driving the trend: K-pop acts like BTS flooding the market with limited-edition CDs that fans snap up as collector’s items rather than something to actually play. The report also found that roughly half of CD buyers younger than Gen Z don’t even own a device capable of playing a CD in the first place. On 5ch, the thread about this “CDs nobody actually listens to” phenomenon split between commenters mocking K-pop’s merchandising tactics and others discussing why it’s worth holding onto physical CDs and records instead of relying purely on streaming.

CD sales are surging… but the reality is nobody’s buying them to listen to music

They’re selling like crazy either way…

I listen to music on streaming these days. Behind the scenes of services like Spotify and Apple Music — which have thoroughly taken over as the mainstream way to listen to music — Hypebeast has reported on the surprisingly strong growth in CD sales.

Streaming is convenient for listening and watching, but the platform can yank your access away without warning whenever it suits them. If there's something you really love, you're better off buying the physical version.
Same goes for manga — when I read a 20th-century Shonen Jump series digitally, the dialogue had been rewritten with phrasing that couldn't possibly have existed back then (it even dropped the name of a singer who hadn't even debuted yet at the time).
If you love something, hold onto the physical copy.
    26AnonymousSep 15, 2026 09:31
Give it a bit more time and artists and record labels will start their own exclusive streaming services to protect revenue, and everyone will realize that owning a DRM-free CD was the better deal all along.

"I'm on the cutting edge of the times, that's why I don't listen to CDs" — that's this idiot's one and only brag. So lame it's embarrassing.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

One factor behind the rising CD sales figures is said to be a “variant” sales strategy, where the same song gets released across multiple product versions to boost first-week chart numbers. In the K-pop industry especially, many fans buy dozens of copies of the same title to chase bonus items or trading cards, which helps inflate the aggregate sales data. This tends to get framed as an extension of AKB48-style merchandising, but the fact that roughly half of buyers don’t even own a playback device suggests CDs are shifting in character — from something you listen to, into something you collect. At the same time, commenters in the thread noted that streaming services can suddenly become unplayable due to licensing changes or service shutdowns, so if there’s a work you really love, it’s worth keeping a physical copy — suggesting the discussion isn’t purely K-pop criticism, but also reflects a broader wariness about how fragile digital distribution can be.

  • Sou Takei Sounds the Alarm: ‘Money-Hungry Zealots Are Swarming the Attention-For-Cash Machine’

On the night of September 14, TV personality Sou Takei posted on X warning that “the machine that turns attention into money, no matter the method, is baring its fangs even at reckless, greedy zealots” — a message cautioning against the SNS-era obsession with chasing attention at any cost. On the 5ch Entertainment/Sports News+ board, many pointed out that Takei himself — who built his fame on tales of taking down a lion and appearances in animal-slipper segments — has used an “attention-grabbing machine” of his own, while others argued that the sponsorship-based business model behind TV and social media has simply hit its limits, splitting opinion down the middle.

Sou Takei: “A machine that turns attention into money regardless of method… bares its fangs even at reckless zealots…” — shares his thoughts

TV personality Sou Takei updated his X account on the night of the 14th, posting a warning about the state of the world today.

The remarks appear to address the harms of the attention economy — where simply grabbing attention on social media translates directly into money — and the state of society as a whole.

The sponsorship business model is absolute garbage.
These days every gap gets stuffed with ads, ads, ads — it's ads everywhere you look,
and since they just pass that ad cost onto product prices and skim it little by little off consumers, it keeps growing without end.

Wasn't it "taking down a lion with his bare hands"? lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

The “machine that turns attention into money” Takei pointed to appears to refer to the so-called attention economy, in which social media view counts and tips translate directly into revenue. On the thread, some noted that the concept itself originated overseas, while others drew parallels to the limits of TV’s ratings race and ad-revenue model. At the same time, since Takei himself built his fame through a striking persona — like his “bare-handed lion takedown” story — and TV appearances in animal slippers, plenty of pointed remarks asked whether the person who has used the attention-grabbing machine the most has any right to lecture about it. The mix of criticism and sympathy seems to stem from the fact that while few disagreed with the substance of his remarks, many kept questioning whether they squared with his own career.

  • Yuji Oda on Playing Aoshima: ‘The Savior of My Acting Career’ — Finally Free From His Kanchi Conflict

Actor Yuji Oda, ahead of the September 18 release of his first new “Bayside Shakedown” film in 14 years, “Bayside Shakedown: N.E.W. Metropolis wo Kakenukero!”, sat down for an exclusive interview with Sports Hochi and opened up about his feelings toward Shunsaku Aoshima, the role he has played for 29 years since the TV series began. In his breakout role as Kanchi in “Tokyo Love Story,” he carried the conflict of feeling “Kanji isn’t me” — but he says that meeting the role of Aoshima, who has no gap from his true self, freed him from that burden. On 5channel’s Entertainment & Sports News+ board, the thread grew with comparisons of Oda’s best-known roles, debate over the truth behind rumors of a rift with Toshiro Yanagiba, and discussion of on-screen spoilers.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The source is an exclusive interview timed to the release of the franchise’s first new “Bayside Shakedown” film in 14 years, 29 years after the TV series began. Oda revealed he carried the conflict of feeling “Kanji isn’t me” over his breakout role in “Tokyo Love Story,” but felt “freed” playing Aoshima since there’s no gap between the role and his real self — several thread replies quote this passage directly to fill in the context. The thread split over which work best represents him (votes scattered across “If You Look Back, He’s There,” “I Have No Money!,” and “Bayside Shakedown”), plus posts noting that rumored rifts with co-stars were tabloid fabrications. One point readers could easily misread: the comment about Muroi’s death refers to a spoiler within the fictional storyline, not an actual death.

No wonder his comments about taxi drivers come off sympathetic.

There was that movie, something like "Takeshis'," where Takeshi played dual roles,

Actually that's made a comeback lately, in a big way — part of it's simply the pay issue,
but it's also that they've stopped treating public transit as a service industry, more of a "you're gonna ride anyway, aren't you?"
    attitude that's become the norm.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Customer harassment” (kasu-hara) has become a widely used term for a labor issue in recent years, with authorities getting involved too — Tokyo enacted Japan’s first-ever ordinance against customer harassment in April 2025. In the thread, some voiced concern over customer-side misconduct like trouble with drunk passengers and verbal abuse or threats, while others held firm complaints about unfriendly drivers who won’t even respond when told a destination — suggesting this isn’t simply a case of blaming one side alone. Claims that Takeshi mocked taxi drivers in the past, along with anecdotes about his own younger years, were also posted, but it’s worth noting these are all hearsay separate from the actual broadcast content, and their accuracy hasn’t been confirmed.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Masataka Itsumi’s 1993 press conference is remembered as a trailblazing moment when a public figure disclosed his own diagnosis on camera, and it’s also credited with later boosting cancer-screening rates. The thread split over whether it was appropriate to use public airwaves for a personal medical announcement, with critical voices (post 78) pitted against those defending it as ultimately serving a social purpose (post 108). There was also surprise that he “looked older than 48,” which posters in the thread clarified was mainly down to him being gaunt from illness rather than the photo being black-and-white (posts 36→40). Anecdotes about Fuji TV’s momentum at the time, plus its relationships with contemporaries like Takeshi and Sanma, also came up — making this more than just an obituary, but a look back at late-Showa TV culture that a straightforward segment recap alone wouldn’t convey.

Sounds like the type who'd believe every prank show is real lol

Background and Key Points of This Story

“May I Borrow Some Electricity?” hosted by Tetsuro Degawa is a hitchhiking-format show that began airing in 2009, built around cast members flagging down cars on the street and then visiting whatever household they happen to end up at. This marks Masahiko Kondo’s first-ever appearance on the show, and on the threads, his rare TV appearance itself was met with surprise. The reason discussion centered so heavily on Akina Nakamori traces back to the 1989 incident in Atami and the suicide-attempt scandal involving Nakamori that followed it — still remembered as one of the biggest scandals in Japanese entertainment history. Kondo reportedly never issued a public apology or explanation at the time, which is why calls of “he still owes Akina an apology” persist to this day. As for his departure from the Johnny’s agency, the fact that it came before the founder’s sexual abuse allegations became public is what fuels the view that he “dodged a bullet.” Note: comments containing unverified claims about financial trouble, strong personal attacks, or discriminatory language have been excluded from this article.

The thread also touched on typical rents for old, elevator-less buildings and the fact that some tenants simply choose to go without a washlet.

    A 30+ year old, no-elevator, 1LDK in Nakano for ¥130,000 — isn't that a total ripoff?

My place is also a 1LDK at ¥130,000, but I recently looked up the rent for the same layout in my building and it's gone up to ¥190,000

You could get a 1LDK for ¥130,000 in a better area than Nakano though

    ¥130,000 rent × 12 months × 30 years = ¥46.8 million
    33AnonymousSep 15, 2026 01:57
You can get one installed, labor included, for about ¥30,000

    Re: #57
For ¥30,000 in Nakano you're not even talking an older condo — more like a wooden building with a 4.5-tatami room and a shared toilet/sink

Washlets creep me out, no thanks
And the bidet setting just hurts anyway

    Re: #66
You could just turn the water pressure down to the lowest setting

    Background and talking points

According to a Cabinet Office consumer trends survey, washlets (heated bidet toilet seats) are now found in over 80% of Japanese households, making them close to standard equipment even in rental properties. Still, in older buildings landlords often haven’t installed one, leaving tenants to pay for and add one themselves. Egashira’s apartment appears to be more than 30 years old, and several thread commenters noted that a basic ¥30,000 unit can be installed by anyone in about 30 minutes — suggesting that not having one isn’t seen as particularly unusual. What drew more attention was the ¥130,000 rent itself: users shared stories of an identical-layout unit in the same building creeping up to ¥190,000 over time, and calculated that 30 years of rent adds up to ¥46.8 million total — reflecting more concern about rental market prices and renewal-time hikes than about the missing fixture. Why he has stayed in the same apartment for 30 years wasn’t addressed in the video, nor is it clarified in the original article.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Egashira 2:50 wryly admits he’s missing a “standard fixture” despite living in his ¥130,000 rental for 30 years — “We don’t have a washlet…”“.

  • Hirotada Ototake Speaks Out on Online Harassment: “A Hell Where Millions Wait to Decide Who to Attack Next”

On the 14th, author Hirotada Ototake posted on X about the structure of online harassment, describing it as “a hell-like world where thousands, tens of thousands of people are rubbing their hands together, thinking, ‘Alright, who should we go after next?’” The remark was reported by Sports Nippon, and a thread went up on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board. In the thread, some said “if you don’t want to get bashed, just quit social media,” while others pointed to his own past behavior, asking “didn’t he himself once try to turn a restaurant employee into an online target?” — opinions on the remark were split.

Even without doing anything bad, a single hidden-camera shot could still take you down, I'd think

Background and Key Points of This Story

Ototake is a figure who has repeatedly sparked debate on social media before, over incidents involving reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities and his run for political office. This latest post appears to be him voicing his feelings as someone on the receiving end of online abuse, but the thread’s reaction was split because Ototake himself reportedly once called for criticism of a specific restaurant on social media — many commenters felt the contradiction in “the one who attacked is now claiming to be the victim.” On the legal side, measures against online harassment have advanced, such as the 2022 toughening of penalties for the crime of insult, but the cost of identifying and prosecuting each individual anonymous post remains high, and the argument that this isn’t yet functioning as enough of a deterrent carries some weight. In the thread, opinions about Ototake personally and opinions about the structure of social media pile-ons in general got mixed together, which is part of why the discussion talked past itself.
