  • Morning Drama ‘Kaze, Kaoru’ Finale Scores 14.5% Rating, Series Average of 13.8% Tops ‘Omusubi’

NHK’s serialized morning drama “Kaze, Kaoru” wrapped up on September 25 with its finale (episode 130), pulling a household average rating of 14.5% and an individual rating of 8.0%. The series average from the first episode to the last came in at 13.8% for households and 7.6% for individuals — beating “Omusubi” (13.1%, late 2024) and “Welcome Kame” (13.5%, late 2009), though it only tied “Tsubasa” (13.8%, early 2009). On 5ch’s Geinou/Sports Breaking News+ board, commenters looked back on the double-lead drama starring Mikami Ai and Kosaka Juri, with some praising how “it got good once the nursing school arc started,” while others pointed out that “it lost steam in the final stretch” or that “it leaned too hard into romance and family drama instead of its core premise” — leaving opinions on the show’s overall quality divided.

Refreshingly wholesome for a morning drama, for once.
Yeah, nobody wants a messy soap opera first thing in the morning.

It was a messy soap opera right up until she ran from her husband.

    Can't top 'Omusubi.'
The cast was full of popular actors, but Nonji's script was just too awful.
    14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:36
It was brutally boring at first, then suddenly got good once the nursing school arc kicked in
but for some reason it stalled out hard again in the back half, with the last month going nowhere, lol
Still, having a clearly 'good' stretch at all makes it way better than 'Omusubi.'

Isn't that the girl who played Akiko?
She had a certain elegance that made her a good fit for a morning drama.

Once the kids grew up, the story stopped moving, and both leads struggled playing parents.
I watched it wondering if this was even made as a proper drama — out of the corner of my eye. Anyone who watched it seriously must be exhausted.

Fine, she didn't die like she did historically, but Tamaki's presence and her career-path subplot just dragged the story down…

Even if she wasn't going to become a nurse, I feel like she could've at least aimed for some job connected to nursing, medicine, or English…

If I remember right, she actually died young in real history.
If they were going to shoehorn Shimaken's illness in right up to the end anyway, they should've used that screen time on this storyline instead and had her fully recover.

The dawn of nursing in the Meiji era is such a fascinating subject,
but they spent way more time on romance and family drama than on that.
    29AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:46
Honestly, I feel like it would've been more compelling if they'd just focused on Kosaka Juri's story instead of doing a double-heroine format.
    31AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:47
I found it fun and looked forward to it every day, so I'm surprised the ratings weren't great — it was really good.
    39AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:57
People say it should've just been Kosaka Juri as the sole lead, but at the time casting was decided, Mikami Ai actually had more of a track record and star power.
Naomi started out as this twisted, nasty woman muttering insults in English,
but by the end she'd become a clear-headed, understanding, highly capable veteran nurse,
and her acting really grew into the role too. Honestly it's like she swapped personalities with her early self.
    59AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:14

My take is that once she became a nurse, her blunt, no-nonsense personality got reframed as 'rational,' and being valued by those around her is what changed her over time.

It just felt kind of flat, somehow.
Ōzeki Wa was apparently nicknamed the 'crybaby frog,' so I expected someone with really intense emotional ups and downs and a more turbulent life, but both the emotions and the story ended up feeling flat.

    77AnonymousSep 28, 2026 15:35
    Re: #75
An overly intense story first thing in the morning would be rough, so maybe that's about the right level.
There have been morning dramas that collapsed from cramming in too many wild plot twists, after all.

    Background and Talking Points

Today’s NHK morning dramas are a far cry from the era when household ratings above 20% were the norm — the last several installments have all hovered in the low teens. The figures cited in the article — 13.1% for “Omusubi,” 13.5% for “Welcome Kame,” and 13.8% for “Tsubasa” — serve as the benchmark within that declining trend, and by that measure, “Kaze, Kaoru”‘s 13.8% is nothing to scoff at. What divided opinion on the thread wasn’t the rating itself so much as a question of craft: why the gap between the show’s engaging stretches and its dull ones was so wide. Some say it picked up once the nursing school arc began, while many others point to the final stretch stalling out, and some argue the double-heroine structure spread the story too thin. It’s an episode that, beyond the raw numbers, reveals the ups and downs in how the show was received over its run.

    Background and Key Points

Ayumi Hamasaki built an era-defining career from the late 1990s through the 2000s with hits like “M,” and in recent years online speculation about changes to her appearance has repeatedly made headlines. The article doesn’t specify exactly who this post was aimed at or what triggered it. What stood out on the 5ch side was a reading, in the vein of the “it’s totally working” internet meme, that the very act of bothering to respond is itself “proof it’s getting to her” — creating a gap between her defiant statement and how thread users chose to interpret it. Mocking celebrities with the framing “the moment you react, you’ve lost” isn’t unique to Hamasaki — it’s a common pattern for celebrity posts in the social media era — and in this case it was arguably the online game of “reading between the lines,” more than the content of the post itself, that fueled the discussion.

  • ‘15 Tickets Sold Out of 300’: Yoshimoto’s Human Nakamura Admits Dismal Sales Ahead of Solo Makuhari Show

Human Nakamura, a solo comedian with Yoshimoto Kogyo, revealed on X that only 15 of 300 seats have sold for his flip-chart comedy show “Makufuri,” set for October 11 at the Makuhari AEON Mall Theater in Chiba. With advance tickets priced at 2,000 yen and only about two weeks left before showtime, the announcement sparked a range of reactions on 5ch — from claims that his Osaka shows always sell out, to pointed remarks about a mismatch between the venue’s size and his name recognition, to comparisons with other comedians who’ve used the same “please buy tickets” tactic to sell out.

    Mon, Sep 28, 9:00 AM

Yoshimoto Kogyo comedian Human Nakamura (43) posted an update on X by the 28th, revealing ticket sales for his upcoming show.

“Of the 300 seats, only 15 have sold so far. Thank you all so much for everything up to now,” he wrote, sharing the grim update before repeating the announcement: “October 11 (Sun) — Human Nakamura’s 60-Minute Flip-Chart Show ‘Makufuri.’ Start time: 6:30 PM. Venue: Yoshimoto Makuhari AEON Mall Theater. Advance tickets: 2,000 yen.”

Background and Key Points of Debate

Comedians publicly pleading “my tickets aren’t selling” on social media has become a fairly common promotional tactic in recent years, and posters in the thread pointed out that the Nelsons pulled the same move and sold out. At the same time, Yoshimoto’s theater tickets are structured to depend heavily on each performer’s own drawing power, and several posters shared stories of comedians with some TV exposure still struggling to draw crowds in the Kanto region. Opinions split mainly on two points: whether it’s actually true that his Osaka shows sell out, and whether a 300-seat venue is realistic given his current drawing power. Some also pointed out that Makuhari is in Chiba Prefecture, not Tokyo, and sits roughly 30-40 minutes from central Tokyo, correcting a geographic misunderstanding. Reactions to the ticket-sales plea itself were similarly split, ranging from harsh criticism questioning his professionalism to more matter-of-fact acceptance of the tough realities of drawing an audience.

    7AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:40
Being anti-fabric-softener at all is just baffling to me.
Same with people who turn it into some big debate.
    11AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:42
Probably hard to get if your nose is dull.
Some people literally gag from the smell of fabric softener.
    12AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:43
There was a kid at school with bad body odor and everyone bullied him, calling him "stinky" all the time.
As an adult, I caught a whiff of Fa Fa fabric softener (a popular Japanese brand) and it was the exact same smell.
Maybe his parents used Fa Fa, and that smell is what got him bullied all along.
    15AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:44
Who's the one who made Downy (the American softener brand) popular here, anyway?
    16AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:44
People who use the auto-dispenser feature reek something awful lol
    17AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:45
Downy should honestly be banned from sale in Japan.
    18AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:45
Why does fabric softener specifically smell so off to people?
Even folks who don't mind other detergents or air fresheners say fabric softener makes them feel sick.
    19AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:46
Can't generalize, but people who are, you know, "sensitive" do tend to be oversensitive to smells and sounds too.
    20AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:47
If you can't stand fabric softener smell, you could never live abroad long-term.
Apparently foreigners find Japanese people's obsession with being odorless bizarre.
    21AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:47
Not sure if it's Downy or what, but there's definitely stuff out there that smells like straight-up chemicals.
    23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:48
    Fabric softener is basically poison.
Though I'll give it credit for stopping static cling.
    25AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:49
Aren't people overreacting to folks who just say they don't like the smell of fabric softener?
    26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:50
People with mental health conditions can get extra sensitive to fabric softener smells, so you've got to be considerate.
    27AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:50
When a repairman who reeks of fabric softener comes into the house, the smell lingers forever.
    28AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:50
Heated tobacco products reek of chemicals too, by the way.
    31AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:50
Oh sure, with fabric softener, the more you dump in the better, right? (sarcasm)
    39AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:53
It smells like a cheap perfume gone horribly wrong.
Honestly closer to body odor than anything else.
    43AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:53
I do use fabric softener, but
some brands separate from the water if you just let the bottle sit.
Then if you shake it before using, it foams up and gets hard to pour.
    Somebody fix that already.
    57AnonymousSep 28, 2026 13:58
I know someone with what seems like a fragrance allergy, so I have to be careful around them.
It's really something you can't understand unless it's happened to you.
They once got so nauseous in a crowded room they had to rush to the bathroom.

I think it's more extreme than anti-smoking sentiment — almost pathological.
    72AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:05
If you don't use fabric softener your towels go all stiff and crunchy though.
    104AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:15
My neighbor's a smoker, so maybe their nose is shot, but when they hang laundry on the balcony it reeks of fabric softener.
Might be mixing with body odor too?
    Either way, it's rank.
There was also this one time it smelled cheap and artificial in a different way — maybe a room fragrance spray.
When someone whose nose is already ruined causes fragrance pollution, it's genuinely brutal.

    Re: #72
Switching to unscented fabric softener or a citric acid rinse would solve the fragrance-pollution problem, I'd think.
    82AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:08
Fabric softener is what turns the washing machine drum moldy in the first place.
    Maybe push that angle instead.
    89AnonymousSep 28, 2026 14:11
    Re: #82
Oh, maybe that's less like sweat and more like the smell mixing with grime in the washing machine drum.

Background and key points of this debate

In recent years the term “kōgai” (香害, a pun on 公害 meaning “pollution,” used for fragrance-related health complaints) has spread in discussions around fabric softener, with Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency and the National Consumer Affairs Center fielding complaints about health issues caused by scented detergents and softeners. In the thread, voices sympathetic to people sensitive to smells clashed with those who dismissed that sensitivity as “oversensitive” or “pathological,” with no clear resolution in sight. While Obara’s original post was aimed at poking fun at anti-fabric-softener people, most of the actual replies were grounded in real experiences from both users and non-users — it wasn’t really a simple two-sided fight. Worth noting too: scent preference and medically recognized chemical sensitivity are two different things, and the thread often blurred the line between them.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment & Sports News+) thread “34-year-old talent Bras Obara: ‘Aren’t anti-fabric-softener people kind of extreme?’ sparks backlash: ‘Way too sensitive… that’s your problem’.”

  • Morning Musume. vs. Hinatazaka46 vs. Tokimeki Sendenbu: September 30 Same-Day Single Showdown Sparks Sales-Ranking Frenzy

On September 30, 2026, multiple groups — Morning Musume.’26, Hinatazaka46, Chou Tokimeki Sendenbu, CANDY TUNE, and OWV — are releasing new singles on the same day. The Hello!Project board has been buzzing with predictions for the Oricon daily rankings: Morning Musume. has stayed within the weekly top 3 ever since introducing individual handshake events, but this time some fans are predicting a 4th-place finish. The debate has gone beyond simple ranking rivalry, spilling into arguments over the “padded” structure of CD sales and how much a business model built around bonus events and fan meet-and-greets can really be trusted as an indicator of actual popularity. For Tokimeki Sendenbu, who are heading toward disbandment, the focus is on whether a “farewell boost” will kick in.

    1AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:00
Wonder how the rankings will shake out
    3AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:11
Haven't bought one in a while, but apparently Morning Musume.'s year-labeled era singles (the '26, '25, etc. releases) always settle in the 80,000–100,000 range no matter how bad the song is
    15AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:38
    Re: #3
That range is basically fixed. When the group's stable and the song's good and they run more events, the ceiling can go up to nearly 140,000.
Unlike other groups, almost nobody here stacks multiple copies, so it stays low and stable — for better or worse.
    6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:14
Do the other idol groups run bonus-event handshake sessions too?
    8AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:19
Could this end up the worst release-day daily ranking (4th place) in recent memory???
    10AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:23
    Daily 4th-place prediction

    09/30: Hinatazaka46 (5 versions), CANDY TUNE (3 versions), Chou Tokimeki Sendenbu (3 versions + 5 solo jacket versions), Morning Musume.'26 (5 versions), OWV (3 versions + FC edition), Mugendai MyuType (2 versions / + live-ticket lottery entry / BanG Dream! tie-in), millsage (+ live-ticket lottery entry / BanG Dream! tie-in), Ikka Dumb Rock! (+ live-ticket lottery entry / BanG Dream! tie-in),
    Appare!, 04 Limited Sazabys, Ueda Reina (2 versions / anime tie-in), Kumada Akane & Masui Yuka (2 versions / Precure tie-in), XngHan&Xoul (formerly of RIIZE, 2 versions), go!go!vanillas (3 versions / anime tie-in)

What rank actually counts as "legit" then, lol
    26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:47
    Re: #24
Every Morning Musume. single since they started individual handshake events has made the weekly top 3, so top 3 is the bar. This one's predicted at 4th, though.
    11AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:24
    Is OWV strong too?
Could this actually land at 5th place weekly?
They've always kept numbers that beat everyone except the true heavyweight acts — but when this many heavyweights collide on the same release day…
5th place would be a fittingly bleak symbol of the second dark age.
    12AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:29
    Is Tokisen really that strong?
    14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:35
    Re: #12
Even at baseline they're stronger than the current Morning Musume., and on top of that there's the disbandment boost.
    16AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:40
Hinatazaka's fired up by their rivalry with Kawaii Lab (a production company known for heavy CD-stacking sales), so they might even hit a million copies if it comes down to it.
That's a battle on a completely different level, way up in the clouds.
    19AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:41
    Re: #16
CANDY TUNE's sales are minor league — they're no threat to Hinatazaka.

The idol market has genuinely gotten massive, hasn't it
    18AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:41
Wouldn't be shocking if Kyanchu (CANDY TUNE's nickname) pulled in something like 500,000 copies too
    21AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:43
    102,753 — Morning Musume.'25 (2025/12/03)
I figured there was no point keeping the "Love Machine Preservation Society" (devoted fans of their classic hit) going anymore, but honestly, still moving 100k+ copies is kind of impressive.
No special push, just business as usual, and they've still got a hardcore fanbase that strong.
    22AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:45
Furuppa (FRUITS ZIPPER's nickname) is already moving around 500,000 copies, which means Kawaii Lab has the formula down cold — exactly how many release events and bonus-event sessions it takes to sell how many tens of thousands of copies.
    23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:45
Top 4 is the acceptable cutoff, right?
    5th place is not okay.

For Tokisen fans, it's all about the music quality, so this kawaii-style song doesn't really matter to them.
All they're hyped about is the next single: Asano Naoshi's emo-rock track and Tsukada Kohei's tear-jerker melody. That's really the whole story.
    MUTEKI DEAD TOKIMEKI✨🏇🌈@muteki_dead1
    https://x.com/muteki_dead1/status/2103791199144558955
    ■ Yappari Kimi ni Kimeta♡ ("I Knew It, I Choose You♡")

→ The go-to songwriter for M!LK, SHACHI, Chou Tokkyu, and other Stardust acts — surprisingly, this is his first-ever track for Tokisen: Asano Naoshi
    ■ Isshou Seishun, Isshou Munekyun ("Forever Young, Forever Heart-Throbbing")

→ The legendary hit machine behind =LOVE, ≠ME, and ≒JOY (the Kawaii Lab idol trio) — also his first track for Tokisen, of course: Tsukada Kohei
☆ Two absolutely godly composers — this is a god-tier lineup.

Since they're disbanding, Tokisen fans don't need to worry about the numbers anymore.
They don't need a kawaii song at all — as long as they get one emo, cool track made just for the hardcore fans, that's all that matters.

76th single, round-6 talk event: 210 slots sold out
77th single, round-6 talk event: 170 slots sold out

    76th single round-6 sellout rate: 61% ≈ 210/340 slots
    77th single round-6 sellout rate: 40% ≈ 170/416 slots
    36AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:59
You guys need to wake up already — handshake-driven CD sales numbers don't mean anything.
Nobody owns a CD player anymore, nobody listens to CDs; the CD is just a bonus tacked onto the event, so the sales figure is really just a count of how many times they ran that event.
In other words, it's a meaningless little bubble that nobody outside the fandom even knows exists. Get some perspective, idiots.
Arguing over who's "above" or "below" in a world that's purely about how many handshake events you ran and how many copies each individual otaku stacked — it's ugly.

Actually recouping money matters more than just going viral on social media, though.
Even McDonald's competes on burgers sold, not on how many views its posts get.

    43AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:08
    Re: #37
Going viral on social media matters way more, honestly.
Big jobs start rolling in on their own, the money multiplies, and both awareness and popularity climb.
Meanwhile, to sell CDs that only insider fans ever buy, the agency pours in huge amounts of venue-rental money, time, and labor — and bragging about hitting No. 1 on Oricon or Billboard doesn't raise name recognition anymore and doesn't even turn a profit.
    39AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:04
    Re: #37
In that case it's ticket sales and merch that matter more than CDs — CDs don't turn a profit.
    41AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:07
If you're saying CDs are unnecessary and ticket sales alone are enough, then you wouldn't even need to release new songs anymore.
    That's basically the enka world.
Though Up-Front was kind of already that type of company to begin with.

    Re: #41
Which is exactly why just putting out digital singles is enough — and honestly, that's basically what's happening already.
CDs don't make money anymore; they just run at a loss.
The agencies still treating CDs as priority number one are incompetent operations clinging to past glory with old-fashioned thinking — that's the real danger.
    42AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:08

Apparently HYBE's earnings forecast is set to be an all-time high.

Citing BTS's return to activity and growth from younger IPs, SK Securities projects HYBE will post record results this year — revenue of 5.1 trillion won (roughly 590 billion yen) and operating profit of 301.8 billion won (roughly 35 billion yen). That said, reflecting the drop in valuations across the entertainment sector, it cut its target share price from 350,000 won to 290,000 won (roughly 34,000 yen), while maintaining a "buy" rating.
    52AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:15

Kawaii Lab isn't "the group with the most momentum right now" anymore, though.
    62AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:23
If all you care about is selling CDs, the AKB model is the right answer — buy one copy and you get a mini-live plus a guaranteed handshake.
The tradeoff is that the live show's cost-performance takes a hit.
    63AnonymousSep 28, 2026 11:24
    Re: #62
If it's purely about sales volume, the K-pop lottery-ticket model wins. Japan does it too, but only among the major acts.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

A recurring theme in these same-day-release comparison threads is the gap between actual CD sales and Oricon rankings. Because of “stacking” — where a single hardcore fan buys multiple copies and formats just to get handshake tickets or bonus-event passes — Oricon rankings tend to reflect the purchasing power of a core fanbase chasing events rather than a group’s overall popularity across the wider market. Within the thread, comments like “there’s basically no one left in Japan buying CDs for the music” and “a digital single is enough” came up, reflecting how the CD format itself has shifted from being a music product to essentially a vessel for handshake tickets. Opinions were also split over the underlying business model — some argued “going viral on social media leads to more work,” while others countered that “live shows and merch are actually more profitable” — so which metric (CD sales, social media buzz, event attendance, or live/merch revenue) should define success was very much up for debate. One thing readers should be careful not to misread: the ranking predictions aren’t a direct, absolute measure of a group’s popularity — they’re heavily shaped by how many bonus events each group runs and the purchasing habits of their respective fanbases.

Background and Key Points of This Story

Asa Kamiya took part in the “Miss University of Tokyo Contest” while a student there, and after graduating has continued her career as a TV personality while attending the university’s Graduate School of Public Policy. This particular story centers on her voluntarily sharing — and apologizing for — a personal experience from a classical concert on X. What stands out is that she got ahead of any criticism, explaining the situation before anyone had actually called her out, and reactions split between people who found the whole announcement unnecessary (“Why post this at all?”) and those who saw some logic in wanting to avoid making sniffling noises. At classical concerts, sounds like sniffling or rustling clothing tend to stand out sharply during quiet passages, which makes this kind of etiquette debate a familiar one. Some comments veering into mockery of her background or looks have been left out of this roundup as personal attacks rather than genuine discussion. It’s also worth noting that quite a few commenters were skeptical this was newsworthy at all — a useful read on how audiences feel about this kind of lightweight celebrity story.

  • Ariyoshi Hiroyuki Claps Back at Backlash Over Teasing Snow Man’s Fukazawa: ‘I’ll Tell Him Never to Come Back’

On September 28, 2026, comedian Ariyoshi Hiroyuki drew criticism on X over how he teased Snow Man’s Fukazawa Shinya, a guest on TV Tokyo’s “Ariyoshi Eeeee!” In response, Ariyoshi wrote, “I’ll tell him myself never to come on again,” which quelled the backlash and drew praise from Fukazawa’s fans, with comments like “so kind” and “handled like a true pro.” On 5ch, however, posters noted that the article never actually specifies what was said, making the sequence of events hard to follow, with some reading Ariyoshi’s reply as sarcasm rather than kindness, and others expressing unease at the broader pattern of fans thanking comedians for “teasing” their idols.

    September 28, 2026, 8:58 AM

Comedian Ariyoshi Hiroyuki (52) updated his X account on the 28th, reacting to posts circulating on social media about Snow Man’s Fukazawa Shinya (34), who appeared as a guest on TV Tokyo’s “Ariyoshi Eeeee!” — and the response has become a major talking point.

Fukazawa appeared on the show as a guest, joining Ariyoshi and others for games and talk segments. Following the broadcast, some users on X criticized the way Ariyoshi teased Fukazawa during the show.

Just tell Fukazawa directly and properly that he can't come back, then

    Background and Talking Points

The original article never reveals exactly what was said to Fukazawa, and on 5ch, posters repeatedly pointed out that “the whole sequence of events is completely unclear.” Opinions were also split on how to read Ariyoshi’s line, “I’ll tell him myself never to come on again” — some took it at face value as a generous response, while others read it as sarcasm aimed at his critics. The pattern of idol fans thanking comedians for “teasing” their idols is itself a recurring flashpoint on 5ch, and this time drew both warm reactions and unease in equal measure. Because the original critical post was deleted, the exact wording and intent behind it remain unconfirmed — only the reported sequence of events has spread as established fact, which is worth keeping in mind.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Entertainment] Ariyoshi Hiroyuki responds to backlash over teasing Snow Man’s Fukazawa Shinya: “I’ll tell him myself never to come on again” [Ailuropoda melanoleuca★].”

  • Yusei Kikuchi Closes Out Season 1-7 with 4.92 ERA — 5ch: ‘Makes More Than Japan’s National Team’

Angels lefty Yusei Kikuchi started against the Mariners on the 27th (28th Japan time), taking the loss after allowing 3 runs over 5 innings. That closes out his 8th major-league season at 1 win, 7 losses, and a 4.92 ERA. Since he arrived as a big-ticket 3-year free-agent signing, thread reactions centered on whether his results justify his salary (roughly ¥9.5 billion over three years). Comparisons to the pay of Japan’s national soccer team players, ERA comparisons with fellow lefty Tomoyuki Sugano, and speculation about a possible comeback next season all fueled a split verdict on his performance.

    87AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:45
    Re: #33
This year they sent Klassen back to the minors so Kikuchi could return to the rotation,
but Klassen was actually pitching better.
At this point it's shaky whether Kikuchi even locks down a rotation spot next season.
Detmers and Ureña are locks (assuming Detmers isn't traded in the offseason).
After that it's probably R. Johnson, G. Rodriguez, Klassen, and Kikuchi battling for the rest.
And the Angels have plenty of good prospects behind them too — Bremner, the #2 overall prospect, plus guys like Dana and other young arms with high strikeout rates.
    34AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:35

Background and key points of this discussion

Yusei Kikuchi signed with the Blue Jays in 2023 on a 3-year deal reported at the time at roughly ¥9.5 billion total, then moved to the Angels partway through 2025. The thread’s central fault line was whether his results justify that salary — comparisons to the pay of Japan’s national soccer team and to Tomoyuki Sugano’s ERA came up repeatedly, while others pointed out his FIP and xFIP haven’t worsened and his velocity hasn’t dropped, fueling hope for a bounce-back next season. Commenters also noted the Angels had never finished a season with 100 losses before this one, and that the club’s new owner — a hedge-fund figure — reportedly still sees Kikuchi as “a lefty with trade value,” meaning front-office circumstances, not just stats, are shaping how he’s judged. Worth noting: the claim that his WBC outing damaged his shoulder is thread speculation, not a confirmed fact.

On the September 28 broadcast of TBS’s “Lovit!”, Maria Makino, who is graduating from her role as a season regular, appeared in a makeover segment styled personally by her idol, Yuri Ebihara (“Ebi-chan”). At the same time, reactions to how the makeover actually turned out were mixed, sparking a debate over how the segment was presented.

Maria had a great figure for an idol too, but Ebi-chan's just on another level
    23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:16
She'll probably keep popping up on the show now and then like the other idols do
    24AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:18
    Ebi-chan doesn't even age like a normal person… she's just built different
    25AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:18
    See you again, Maria
    30AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:21
What if she comes back again dressed as Goku or something
    31AnonymousSep 28, 2026 08:22
I'm watching on a time-shifted delay and just got to the part where Ebi-chan shows up
So she really does disappear for a while during the makeover, huh?
Is that why her makeup and hairstyle were kept so simple — to make her easier to work with?

They keep it to just her voice partway through so it doesn't spoil the reveal
At the end they dim the lights and she comes out like a runway model

Surprised to see Ebi-chan actually uses budget-friendly ("puchipura") items too

    Background and talking points

Yuri Ebihara was the central figure of the 2000s “Ebi-chan boom,” rising to fame as an exclusive model for the fashion magazine ViVi, and she remains an influential voice in beauty and fashion today. “Lovit!” runs a “season regular” system in which part of its hosting lineup rotates seasonally, and this broadcast marked Maria Makino’s graduation from that role. On the thread, viewers were struck by the staging choice to hide the makeover process during the live broadcast and reveal Ebihara only at the end with the lights dimmed, though opinions were split on how the finished look actually came across, with some questioning how effective the transformation really was. The show never made clear exactly how well Makino and Ebihara knew each other beforehand, and details like the circumstances behind Ebihara sending flowers to Makino’s concert were never confirmed on the thread either.

  • Horiemon’s Trick for Paying at a Cash-Only Shop With Empty Pockets Sparks Debate

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie sparked a stir on X (formerly Twitter) by sharing how he’d handle running out of cash at a cash-only shop. It started when creative director Shimpei Takagi posted, “I came to Kyoto without my cards or wallet — if my phone battery dies, I’m done for.” In response, someone suggested asking the shop for its bank account details and paying by online bank transfer, but on 5ch this set off a wave of practical questions: “Can the shop even confirm the deposit on the spot?” and “Would a part-time staffer even have the authority to look up account details?” The discussion expanded further into past disasters where cashless payment became unusable during power outages, escalating into a broader debate over whether people still need to carry cash.

Horiemon — what would he do with no cash at a “cash-only” shop? His trick has people saying “I never thought of that!”

Entrepreneur Takafumi Horie (53) updated his official X (formerly Twitter) account by the 27th, revealing his solution for when you’re out of cash at a “cash-only” shop.

Creative director Shimpei Takagi had posted: “Uh oh, I came to Kyoto without my cards or wallet. If my phone battery dies, I’m as good as dead.”

There's nothing wrong with sharing it — you can transfer money in, but you can't withdraw from someone else's account.

The transfer account is printed right on invoices, and any regular business partner basically already knows it. It's not some big secret.
    23AnonymousSep 27, 2026 23:55
    A shop isn't a private citizen, it's a public-facing business…
But a shop's bank account is still private info to the shop — would they really hand it over that easily (in an emergency)?
For example, if someone eats at a cash-only place and has no cash, and says "give me your bank account, I'll pay electronically" — would they really give it out 100% of the time?
    25AnonymousSep 27, 2026 23:57
    Re: #23 continued
No, they wouldn't necessarily give it out 100% of the time. If anything, refusal or trouble is more likely.
There are mainly four reasons a shop would be reluctant — or refuse outright — to share their account info.

〇1 Security and abuse risk: once someone else knows the account number and name, there's a risk of it being misused as a destination for scam transfers, or signed up for unauthorized direct debits.

〇2 Confirmation hassle and time lag: with electronic transfers (like bank-transfer features), the shop may not be able to confirm the deposit on the spot (outside business hours, or due to system limits).

〇3 Bookkeeping headaches: what should be recorded as cash sales becomes messy for bookkeeping and tax purposes once it's transferred into a personal (or separate) account instead.

〇4 Store policy: at chain stores especially, any payment method or account disclosure not covered by the manual is almost always flatly forbidden.

Stubbornly refusing to keep even ¥20,000–30,000 in your pocket or wallet — I feel like something's wrong with your brain. If you can't change your environment, you're the one who has to change.

There was a guy openly bragging about this online: he got a late-night ramen craving, the only place open was cash-only, so he bought something at a convenience store with electronic payment, returned it on the spot to get cash back, then went and ate at the ramen shop.

    That's just a nuisance to everyone around…

If retailers aren't open, how would you buy food or supplies? Even during the Great East Japan Earthquake, convenience stores did their best to stay open, and trucks tried their hardest to keep delivering goods, didn't they?
    145AnonymousSep 28, 2026 00:33
    Re: #112
There were tons of stories about places barely staying open to sell supplies, but the power being out meant it had to be cash — and I thought, are these people even really Japanese? Well, I guess it's fine even if you don't eat for a few days, since you can get bread rations at an evacuation shelter, right?

…That's what I thought, but then I googled it, and the fact that major newspapers and the police keep putting out warnings like this must mean there are plenty of clueless people who go "I don't carry cash~" and then get stuck with no cash when an actual disaster hits.

It's not about the bank's systems — it's that whoever's actually at the shop can't look it up. There's no way they'd hand a part-timer the online banking login. Only the owner could pull that off.

    Re: #156
Back in the day, people used to leave their license or a watch as collateral, yeah.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Cashless payment is convenient in normal times, but it stops working during power outages or communications failures — a point raised before during the 2018 Hokkaido earthquake and the 2020 Kyushu floods, with the Metropolitan Police Department and newspapers repeatedly urging people to “keep cash on hand for emergencies.” What split opinion in the thread was how practical the fix Horie and others proposed — “get the shop’s bank account and confirm it via online transfer” — actually is in real-world use. Plenty of practical questions came up: transfer fees and free-transfer limits, the fact that deposits can’t be confirmed outside business hours, and that part-time staff often lack the authority to look up account details — turning it into a debate that doesn’t resolve with a simple “just carry cash.” Note that whether Horie himself actually used this method to pay isn’t confirmed by the original article.
