  • Live House Coming to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine Area — 5ch: ‘The Name TOKIO Is Just Terrible’

It’s been reported that a live house called “TOKIO KYOTO,” with a capacity of roughly 700 to 800, is set to open in January 2027 on a lot adjacent to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine. The operators reportedly built the concept around “Japanese-ness.” When the news hit 5ch’s Hello! Project board, discussion ranged across several angles: concern about how the facility’s name and location might affect the area’s scenery, how it would coexist with existing venues like Rohm Theatre Kyoto, and how it differs from the up-to-9,000-capacity “Kyoto Arena (tentative name)” being planned on the former site of the Muko-machi Velodrome. A defining feature of the thread was that welcoming voices and voices calling it a poor fit for the traditional townscape showed up side by side.

Heian Shrine itself is a newcomer that was only built during the Meiji era

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Heian Shrine is often talked about as though it’s a symbol of the “thousand-year-old capital,” but it’s actually a relatively new structure, built in 1895 (Meiji 28) to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the Heian capital — a point some commenters raised themselves. The newly reported “TOKIO KYOTO” is a commercial live house set to open on the adjacent site in January 2027, with a capacity of roughly 700 to 800, and its official concept is built around “Japanese-ness.” On the thread, the central points of debate were unease about a commercial facility moving into a traditionally scenic district, and concern that an English-mixed facility name might clash with local sentiment. At the same time, some Hello! Project fans welcomed the idea simply because it gives Kansai-area shows a new venue, so opinions were split. One thing readers might easily confuse is that this facility is a separate project from the up-to-9,000-capacity “Kyoto Arena (tentative name),” currently under construction on the former site of the Muko-machi Velodrome and slated to open in 2028 or later — commenters in the thread also expressed hope that the two venues, given their different scales, would end up serving different purposes.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Hello! Project board) thread “An 800-capacity live house to open next to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine in January 2027.”

When you're a kid or young, there's so much you don't know yet that everything feels fresh and stirs your emotions constantly — that's why time feels long back then
Because of that inexperience you also do a lot of pointless things, get hurt, get your heart bruised — and those painful experiences are what stretch time out
As you mature and learn to avoid that kind of waste, you start living more efficiently, but that pursuit of efficiency and routine only grows stronger with age, which makes time feel even faster
That's not a bad thing — it means you're getting closer to the truth
Conversely, when you're young there's the pain of reality being hard to see clearly through all the noise
Once you're middle-aged and time starts feeling fast, you start valuing time more
That's exactly what pushes you to feel like you need to get things done
The drive to act on that wisdom becomes middle age's greatest strength
That's why the gap in people's character really shows after middle age

But that noise from your younger years is actually important

    Re: #80
    Exactly right
When you're young, running headfirst into that noise — getting hurt, getting wounded, being humiliated — and pushing through it is incredibly important
You can't get that back once you're middle-aged
It's fine for kids and young people to fail over and over, and it's just as important to have an environment that forgives those failures
Today's society is tragic because it doesn't tolerate failure even from childhood on, not just in adulthood — it's become a society obsessed with picking the "socially correct" answer
    76AnonymousSep 28, 2026 18:58
Suddenly sensing the end after 40 isn't just about your own decline

I personally think it's not that time just "feels" faster — I think it's actually speeding up
In other words, a whole lifetime already exists like a single sphere,
and a person is just consciousness moving through that sphere. That movement speeds up with age
The sphere is like a ball of yarn, containing many lives layered like parallel worlds
Those could be next lives, or they could shift depending on your choices and actions — but the hypothesis is that consciousness is what moves forward through that parallel world

Because there was so much you didn't know yet, and the world felt vast

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Matsuko Deluxe (53) has long served as the Monday commentator on TOKYO MX’s “5-ji ni Muchu!”, and her remark here grew out of casual chatter about a topical news item — the early arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau — rather than being offered as serious life advice. The thread’s recurring theme, that “a year feels shorter the older you get,” echoes what psychology calls “Janet’s Law” (the theory that a year feels shorter the smaller its proportion is relative to the total years you’ve lived), and it struck a chord mainly with posters in their 30s and 40s. That said, opinions on why time feels faster varied widely, ranging from explanations rooted in accumulated experience and efficiency to the joking folk theory that the Earth’s rotation itself is speeding up — there was no real consensus. Note that replies containing unverified claims about Matsuko’s private life or the health of co-stars and other celebrities have been excluded.

Mixing up a disease name with a person's name feels kind of discriminatory and tasteless.

    Re: #134
Though it's somewhat unavoidable — the disease was discovered by Dr. Masahiro Kikuchi and colleagues, hence the name

Background and Key Points of This Story

Kikuchi disease (Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease) is a real lymph-node condition first reported in 1972 by pathologist Masahiro Kikuchi and colleagues — it just happens to share its name with the surname “Kikuchi.” In this case, it appears the announcer meant to say Fukube’s name, but the more familiar term “Kikuchi disease” slipped out instead. Opinions in the thread were split between those brushing it off as a simple slip of the tongue and those voicing discomfort at an athlete being called by a disease’s name. There’s also a history of complaints about TBS’s commentary style — loud shouting and awkwardly staged broadcast moments — and this mistake is being discussed as part of that pattern. It should be noted that how Fukube herself reacted, and whether TBS offered any explanation or apology, are not covered in the source material and remain unknown.

  • HOUND DOG Apologizes After Fans Cause Trouble at Shows — Bans Concertgoers Over Forced Chanting, Verbal Abuse

On September 28, rock band HOUND DOG’s official website reported that some concertgoers had been causing trouble at shows, and announced that the offenders had been banned from future events. The band had already revealed on the 3rd of this month that it had received numerous complaints from other attendees about disruptive behavior, including forcing others to chant along and verbal abuse. On 5ch forums, discussion focused less on whether the ban itself was justified and more on the fact that HOUND DOG is now essentially a solo project for frontman Kohei Otomo, along with who actually wrote the band’s hit songs and reminiscing about its classic tracks.

    Background and Key Discussion Points

HOUND DOG is a rock band that started out playing together as amateurs in the 1980s, scoring hits like “Uwaki na Paret” (Cheating Palette) and “Anata Dake Mitsumeteru” (Only Watching You). The band broke up at one point and the split escalated into a lawsuit; today only founding member Kohei Otomo remains, performing with support musicians. Commenters repeatedly noted that the band is now “essentially a solo act” — a fact that may surprise readers who only know it by name. Debate centered on two points: whether banning attendees was a proportionate response to the disruptive behavior, and whether alienating the band’s longtime hardcore fans could hurt ticket sales going forward, with opinions split in the thread. Unverified rumors also circulated about the reasons behind the breakup, but some details conflicted with known facts such as the timing of a marriage, so that account shouldn’t be treated as confirmed.

Hamaguchi wants to put in long hours on set.
Arino wanted to wrap things up early because of his other work, like "Section Chief Arino" (his Game Center CX persona) and jobs up in Hokkaido.

    Background and Talking Points

Hamaguchi Yu left Shochiku Entertainment, his longtime talent agency, in 2022, but Yoiko itself never disbanded and his double act with Arino is still ongoing. This new show is a location project following the couple’s everyday dates, and the thread showed little interest in the show’s actual content, instead gravitating toward opinions on Hamaguchi as a person and how his career has evolved. There’s been little official detail on the circumstances of his agency departure, so claims circulating in the thread — like the idea he was let go over workplace harassment — remain unconfirmed hearsay and shouldn’t be treated as established fact. Comments about his married life with Minami and whether they have children also contradicted each other, so that unverified information has been left out of this writeup.

Elon Musk, founder of X (formerly Twitter), brought up the idea of buying a Japanese TV station in a post on X, sparking a wave of discussion after Tokyo Sports picked up the story. Japan’s Broadcast Act caps foreign voting rights in broadcasters at under 20%, but on 5ch users repeatedly pointed out that Fuji TV and Nippon TV’s actual foreign-ownership ratios already exceed that cap, splitting opinion between “it’s legally impossible” and “the rule just isn’t being enforced properly.”

    14AnonymousSep 28, 2026 16:48
    No way that's happening lol
    There's a law saying you can't go over 20%

The Broadcast Act stipulates that, to prevent foreign capital from controlling broadcasters, foreign voting rights must be kept under 20% (they must not reach 20% or more).
Overview of the Broadcast Act's foreign-ownership rule (the under-20% rule)
Basic rule: key terrestrial, BS, and CS broadcasters and certified broadcast holding companies must keep foreign shareholders' voting rights under 20%.
15%+ notification/disclosure: once foreign voting rights hit 15% or more, the company must make periodic public disclosures.
20%+ triggers penalties: once the 20% threshold is reached, the broadcaster becomes subject to sanctions, including revocation of its broadcasting certification.

    Re: #232
Even if he managed to buy one, they could just change the law and confiscate it — so bribing the lawmakers is really the surer bet

Background and key points of the debate

Japan’s Broadcast Act caps foreign voting rights in broadcasters at under 20%, and exceeding that threshold can lead to revocation of a station’s broadcasting certification. However, reporting by outlets like Diamond has pointed out that Fuji TV’s foreign-ownership ratio sits at roughly 32% and Nippon TV’s at roughly 24% — both over the cap — making the gap between regulation and reality a long-running issue. The thread split between those arguing a takeover is “legally impossible” because of the law, and those arguing “enforcement is lax, so there are loopholes,” with the latter view shaped by how past foreign-ownership violations involving Tohoku Shinsha and Fuji TV were actually handled. Notably, the thread never gets into the technical wrinkles of how foreign-ownership ratios are actually calculated — such as how directly held shares are treated versus shares registered under trust banks — meaning the headline percentages alone don’t tell the whole story.

The news broke just ahead of the October 6 premiere of his lead drama “kiDnap GAME,” a joint Japan-Korea-Hong Kong production, and with few details available, 5ch users traded a wide range of speculation and opinions.

“This is a personal matter, but I have married a non-celebrity woman I have been dating.” On September 6, Kentaro Sakaguchi (35) announced his marriage on his paid fan club site. With the October 6 premiere of his lead drama “kiDnap GAME” (Fuji TV) approaching, he’s also reaching a major milestone in his acting career.

“The drama is an international co-production between Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, and distribution and broadcast deals have already been secured in 28 countries and regions. It’s an ambitious project aimed at global success from the planning stage.”

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

This report is based on coverage from a women’s tabloid magazine, and as of this writing, neither Sakaguchi nor his wife’s side has offered any public explanation. Specific details — who called the police and under what circumstances, or how things were resolved once officers arrived — haven’t been reported either, so most of the definitive-sounding claims flying around 5ch amount to speculation without solid grounding. The report landed just as Sakaguchi’s October 6 drama “kiDnap GAME,” a Japan-Korea-Hong Kong co-production set to stream in 28 countries and regions, is drawing attention to both his professional and personal life. On the thread, some argued that calling the police is serious enough to imply real trouble occurred, while others urged caution against jumping to conclusions before any violence or facts are confirmed — overall, confusion over the vagueness of the report stood out.

  • “Bayside Shakedown” Knocks “Chiikawa” Off the Top of the Box Office — Fans Split Over Bonus-Goods Tactics

In the nationwide box-office attendance rankings for September 25–27 released by Kogyo Tsushinsha, “Bayside Shakedown N.E.W.: Race Through the Metropolis,” now in its second week of release, overtook “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island,” which was in its ninth week, to climb to No. 1.

On the thread, opinions split over how to read the numbers: Chiikawa’s strength is said to come from a “bonus-goods” strategy that racks up repeat viewings, which then sags in weeks without giveaways. Some cheered the No. 1 finish, while others offered a cooler take, noting that overall attendance hadn’t actually grown. Posters also lamented Eri Fukatsu’s absence from the cast and traded predictions on how things might shift once a new Chiikawa release drops next month.

Kogyo Tsushinsha has released the nationwide box-office attendance Top 10 for September 25–27, with “Bayside Shakedown N.E.W.: Race Through the Metropolis,” starring Yuji Oda and now in its second week, rising to No. 1. Last week’s No. 1, “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island,” slipped to No. 2.

The “Bayside Shakedown” series follows Shunsaku Aoshima, an unconventional officer who left corporate life to join the Wangan Police Station’s Criminal Investigation Division. In the new theatrical entry, Aoshima, now a detective with the First Investigation Division, races through the sprawling metropolis of Reiwa-era Tokyo. Katsuyuki Motohiro returns as director, with Oda reprising his role as Aoshima. The cast also includes Shu, Jin Shirasu, Kuranosuke Sasaki, Takahisa Masuda (NEWS), Kayo Noro, Shiori Tamai (Momoiro Clover Z), Karin Fujiyoshi (Sakurazaka46), Nagisa Saito, Jiro Sato, Yusuke Santamaria, Miki Maya, Miki Mizuno, Masahiro Komoto, Susumu Terajima, Atsushi Ito, Kenichi Takito, Yutaka Matsushige, and Kohei Matsushita.

    Background and Points of Debate

The box-office attendance ranking measures weekly rank by “number of moviegoers,” not box-office revenue, so it doesn’t necessarily mean the top film drew the largest audience overall. As posters on the thread point out, “Chiikawa” is now in its ninth week of release and is known for a strategy of driving repeat viewings through collectible merchandise bonuses. Attendance tends to dip in weeks without a giveaway, whereas “Bayside Shakedown” climbed the rankings on the strength of being a fresh release in only its second week. While the No. 1 finish made headlines, some pointed out that overall attendance hadn’t actually grown from the previous week — reading “No. 1 equals smash hit” too simplistically misses what’s really going on. The absence of Eri Fukatsu’s character, Emi, from this installment has also been a talking point among longtime fans of the series.

  • Would You Buy a PS6 With No Disc Drive? IGN’s 33,000-Vote Poll Splits Opinion

IGN’s international site ran a poll asking “Would you buy a PS6 even if it doesn’t come with a disc drive?” and it drew 33,000 votes, sparking discussion on 5ch’s hardware/industry (Geha) board. Rather than the poll numbers themselves, the thread zeroed in on the fine print behind dropping the disc drive: an expected price of 200,000–300,000 yen, the real download ratio Sony discloses in its earnings reports, and the fact that PlayStation Store lacks a refund system the way Steam does.

Of course not. From Valve's perspective, as long as you're a genuine paying customer, there's no reason to ban you.

    Background and Key Points

IGN’s poll is a self-selecting survey answered voluntarily by the site’s own readers, so respondents skew toward people who already read IGN — it’s not a number that represents the market as a whole. The “95% download ratio” figure cited in the thread also rests on different assumptions than the actual ratio Sony discloses in its earnings reports (about 80%, according to posters, with an average sale price of roughly 3,500 yen), reflecting the fact that most purchases happen during sales. It’s also worth noting that as of September 2026, Sony has not officially announced that the PS6 will fully drop its disc drive — this discussion is built on overseas media reports and rumors. Steam’s refund policy requires under 2 hours of playtime and within 14 days of purchase, a different standard from PlayStation Store’s limited refund support.

President Higashiyama Yuji will step down at the end of his term, with a new leadership structure taking effect October 1, while owner-family member Fujishima Julie Keiko will remain on as a director. SMILE-UP. was reorganized following the sexual abuse scandal involving Johnny Kitagawa into an organization that handles no new talent activities and focuses solely on victim compensation. Who else is supposed to run it if not the family?

Meanwhile his wife Kimura Yoshino is all over the place — regular shows, commercials, you name it

Her husband's basically unemployed now, so she's got to bring in the money.
For a year after the scandal broke, he refused to take his salary and lived off retained earnings

Guess they'll do another totally forgettable cop drama, stacked with heavyweight actors so it's guaranteed not to flop?

I remember Shoken and Ikkei (veteran supporting actors) acted so well that lead actor Higashiyama basically got left in the dust

It's like surgery that never removes the cancer.
They just cut him open and sewed him back shut.

More like they transplanted the cancer into the brain instead

Julie clawing back power at this point doesn't mean much anyway.
    Arashi's already broken up.
Even if she returns to the industry, she won't have her old clout.

    Re: #90
Heard she's been complaining to MAJ (a talent industry association) and even meddling in TV casting.
Wouldn't be surprised if she goes right back to doing whatever she wants

Huh, I thought Higashi hadn't been president for ages

    Higashi was president, huh.
I only ever had a spacey image of him, but turns out he's surprisingly sharp

    Higashiyama, come back.
It's just a compensation front desk job anyway, Julie can handle that fine

Just have Sausage (forum nickname) and Julie do a sham comeback press conference already

The credibility of that article about them pressuring M!LK just shot way up

My kid got into M!LK and EBiDAN back around the start of this year,
but lately she's gotten sick of the brutal random-bonus-item sales tactics,
and now she's landed on "SnowMan's better since their bonuses aren't random"

Wild that in Japan, sexual abuse on a scale unheard of anywhere else in the world gets forgiven just by changing the agency's name

    Re: #146
Technically it's a separate organization now

    Background and Key Points

SMILE-UP. changed its name in 2023 following the revelation of the sexual abuse scandal involving Johnny Kitagawa, and was reorganized into an organization dedicated solely to victim compensation, with no new talent activities. Higashiyama Yuji was appointed president at that time, and his current departure is framed as simply the natural end of his term. Meanwhile, owner-family member Fujishima Julie Keiko remains on as a director, and the thread’s discussion focused heavily on this contrast. Opinions were split between skeptics arguing that “nothing substantively changes as long as Julie — who holds the real power — stays on even after Higashiyama’s exit,” and others suggesting it “could pave the way for Higashiyama’s return to entertainment.” There were also comments noting that allegations of pressure on affiliated idol groups have grown more credible, reflecting persistent distrust toward the management structure of the former Johnny’s organization as a whole. Readers should keep in mind that SMILE-UP. is not a company currently engaged in talent management, but rather an organization set up specifically for victim compensation.
