  • Three Kingdoms Figure Whose Story We Wish Continued Sparks Buzz — 5ch: “China Reportedly Stunned by How Much Japanese Fans Love Lü Bu”

5ch reacted to a Yahoo News article spotlighting Sima Shi — the man who inherited power from his father Sima Yi and is remembered as a “Three Kingdoms figure whose story we wish had continued, only to vanish from history.” The thread quickly veered away from Sima Shi himself, drifting into discussions of Xu Shu (who left Liu Bei’s service), Liu Shan (there’s a theory he was actually a wise ruler who merely played the fool), and how the popularity of Cao Cao and Lü Bu differs between China and Japan. Opinions were especially divided over whether it’s true that “China is apparently stunned by how much Japanese fans love Lü Bu.”

Not Cao Cao, not Zhuge Liang… Who is the #1 “Three Kingdoms figure we wish we’d seen more of”?

    9/29 (Tue) 7:21

The reason a historical figure captivates us isn’t always tied to great achievements. Sometimes it’s the “unfinished” figures — the ones who make us wonder “what might they have accomplished if they’d lived just a little longer?” — who leave the deepest impression. In the Three Kingdoms era, Sima Shi is one such figure. He inherited power from his father Sima Yi and came within a hair’s breadth of bringing the realm under Sima family rule, only to die along the way. Where does this “wish we’d seen more” feeling — one also evoked by Japan’s own Oda Nobunaga — come from? The author of “Learning World History Through Maps: A Deep-Read Approach” unpacks the little-known appeal of Sima Shi.

Even among Three Kingdoms fans, maybe 3% still care about the story after Zhuge Liang (Kongming) dies.

Honestly, when people say "Three Kingdoms," I think they mostly mean up through the Battle of Red Cliffs.

I'd say up through the fall of Shu. After that the outcome's already obvious, so it's just momentum.

Come on, this was an era when the population crashed from something like 50 million down to 14 million. If the Five Tiger Generals and all the Wu generals who died of plague had lived, China would've disappeared.

That's a staggering food crisis — probably one of the worst in Chinese history. I recall reading that around that time there was a volcanic eruption in New Zealand that blanketed the globe in ash.

Thinking of naming my daughter "張飛," read as "Haruhi," or "劉備," read as "Risona," or "関羽等," read as "Kanpanera" — what do you all think? (Japanese parents sometimes give kanji unconventional readings — here the characters for Zhang Fei, Liu Bei, and "Guan Yu, etc." are forced to read like ordinary-sounding girls' names.)

When Lü Bu was captured and about to be executed, he said, "Cao Cao, don't you want to try using me?" If Cao Cao had actually taken him on as a retainer…

And if Guan Yu hadn't gotten cocky and gotten himself killed, Zhang Fei wouldn't have died either.

Man, I wish I could've seen how that would've played out.

Liu Shan was a wise ruler who played the fool. By surrendering early, he avoided needless bloodshed among the common people, and by acting like a buffoon to lower everyone's guard, he managed to live out his natural lifespan in an age of constant war.

He left state affairs to Zhuge Liang, then Jiang Wan, then Fei Yi, then Chen Zhi in turn. Once the talent pool ran dry and Wei invaded, he surrendered on Qiao Zhou's advice, then spent his remaining years taking it easy on Xi Zheng's counsel.

Probably because Gao Shun went out so honorably. Plus having a cool nickname like the "Camp-Breaker Battalion" for his troops helps a lot too.

    That'd be Gao Shun, exactly.
    Re: #254
As one of Lü Bu's subordinates, Gao Shun was more capable than Zhang Liao — if he'd lived, he probably would've risen even higher, to Grand General.

    Background and Points of Debate

Assessments of Three Kingdoms figures are said to differ sharply between the official history (Chen Shou’s “Records of the Three Kingdoms”) and the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms,” which treats Shu Han as the legitimate dynasty and casts Cao Cao in a somewhat villainous light. Cao Cao’s popularity in Japan is often traced to Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel and Koei’s (now Koei Tecmo’s) video games, and this gap in portrayal appears to be behind the thread’s divided reactions to the claim that “Cao Cao isn’t popular in China.” A similar gap exists for Liu Shan, between the foolish figure depicted in the Romance and the reevaluation emerging from recent historical research — the thread’s discussion of Liu Shan follows this same line. Lü Bu’s popularity may likewise be shaped by the differences between the official history, the Romance, and how he’s been received in Japan specifically.

What are you, DiCaprio? (known for only dating women around 25)

    Background and Points of Discussion

Mizuta disbanded the comedy duo Wagyu with his partner Kenshiro Kawanishi in 2023 and currently works as a solo comedian. Yamamoto is a freelance newscaster who has appeared on programs including “Wa Spo × MLB”; how long the two dated or the circumstances that led to their marriage aren’t disclosed in the public statement. The announcement gives no specific reason for the divorce, so the “personality” and “abuse” theories floated on the thread should be treated as unfounded speculation, nothing more. Celebrity divorce announcements are typically limited to what the parties themselves choose to disclose, and outside speculation rarely adds anything beyond what they’ve actually stated.

  • Morning Musume。’26 Talk Tickets Now Print Home Addresses — No-Swap Rule Sparks Controversy

Sales updates for the individual talk sessions and photo (“cheki”) events tied to Morning Musume。’26’s 77th single have been making the rounds on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. But the real talking point wasn’t which slots sold out — it’s that the talk tickets shipped out this time now print not just the participating member’s name but the buyer’s home address. Previously, tickets listed only a name, making same-day ticket swaps easy; with an address now printed on them, showing up under someone else’s name becomes much harder, prompting comments on the board like “isn’t this a Consumer Affairs Agency matter?” The thread also saw debate over the fairness of a system that makes it impossible to trade randomly-assigned tickets, plus chatter about the wide sales gap between members.

I keep seeing Nonaka fans absolutely furious at Ishikawa, both before and after buying
Guess Nonaka and Ishikawa are the type of members whose fanbases just don't overlap at all

    Background and Key Points

Tickets for individual talk sessions and cheki events are usually assigned to a random member, and it has become an almost standard practice among fans to swap a ticket for someone other than their favorite on the day of the event. What’s causing a stir this time is that the ticket now prints a home address in addition to the name that used to be the only information listed, raising the psychological barrier for anyone other than the named buyer to line up. Some in the thread see this as an attempt to curb high-priced scalping, while others are concerned that organizers haven’t clearly explained the pros and cons of leaving personal information like an address on a physical ticket. There are reportedly past cases within the same family of groups where printing addresses became a talking point, and fans are watching closely to see whether this is a one-off measure or here to stay.

The "leader" who always ends up standing at the edge of the group

Background and Key Points of This Story

A common-law relationship (naien) refers to a de facto marital arrangement in which no official marriage registration has been filed. If a certain period of cohabitation and other factors are recognized, such couples can receive protections close to those of legal marriage in areas like inheritance, pensions, and tax treatment. The comment noting that “common-law partners do have inheritance rights” reflects this legal reality. That said, it’s worth noting that the sighting reported in the article dates to December 2025 and isn’t firsthand confirmation of the current state of the relationship. Some responses in the thread also referenced Nakai’s 2025 withdrawal from show business following a scandal involving trouble with a woman, with speculation about damages and his future income sources. These comments draw on already-reported, well-known background, and this article itself concerns reporting on a private relationship. As for why the couple hasn’t filed a marriage registration, commenters only speculated — “it’s a hassle,” “he doesn’t want the responsibility” — and neither party has publicly stated their intentions.

It's low in salt and fat too, so it's actually pretty healthy.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

It’s worth noting that the Ministry of Agriculture’s figures come from a survey of storefront prices at roughly 1,000 stores nationwide — a weekly average price — which is a separate metric from actual trends in rice production. In the thread, while some welcomed the price drop, others pointed out that the “rice exodus” that took hold during last year’s price spike may still be ongoing, and that acreage-reduction-style policies — which still pay subsidies for converting paddies into regular farmland — remain in effect, meaning the production base itself continues to shrink. That paints a picture where a simple price drop can’t automatically be read as a recovery in demand. Many posts also voiced distrust over how prices were set during the price hikes and how distribution stockpiles were explained, suggesting the real dividing line in opinion was less about price itself and more about differing levels of trust in agricultural policy and JA, the farmers’ co-op.

    Right.
Apparently the brain literally gets rewired to crave stimulants.
So trying to quit on willpower alone is a lost cause.
The only real option is physical isolation from the drug.
    58AnonymousSep 29, 2026 01:16
ASKA and Kiyohara are actually doing well for themselves, though.

Background and key points of this discussion

Since 2001, Tashiro has been arrested and served time multiple times for violations of the Stimulants Control Act and related offenses. Since his release, he has continued sharing his road to recovery with support from the NPO APARI, and the monthly self-testing reported here is part of that effort — though opinions remain divided over whether a celebrity with an arrest record should keep speaking publicly about it. The thread split over whether to see addiction as “weakness of will” or as “an illness involving changes in the brain,” with many commenters in the latter camp showing understanding that it’s a condition requiring specialized treatment. At the same time, his other scandals — including a voyeurism case unrelated to drugs — remain fresh in people’s minds, making for a complicated mix of sympathy and criticism that’s hard to capture through the back-and-forth of comments alone.

  • Kentaro Sakaguchi’s Agency Denies ‘Any Violence Took Place’ — 5ch Reacts: ‘Total Denial, or Is He Just That Confident?’

On September 28, 2026, according to a report by Tokyo Sports Web, Tristone, the talent agency representing actor Kentaro Sakaguchi, updated its official website with a statement addressing content reported by certain weekly magazines, saying “there is absolutely no truth to claims that he committed violence.” Sakaguchi previously had his relationship with actress Mei Nagano confirmed by both of their agencies, and on 5ch, speculation ran wild over how this new allegation might connect to that history, as well as over whether it’s true that police were called to his home.

So then, why WAS the report made??

Background and Key Points of This Story

An agency statement responding to a weekly magazine report is a familiar pattern in celebrity news, but it’s easy to overlook that Tristone’s wording here narrows the denial to one specific point — violence — rather than denying the allegations as a whole, stating only that “there is absolutely no truth to claims that he committed violence.” Reactions on the thread split over how to read the reported police visit to his home: some treated the fact that police were called as significant in itself, while others argued that a police call doesn’t prove violence occurred. Separately, Sakaguchi’s past relationship with actress Mei Nagano — which both of their agencies confirmed at the time — is a different topic that’s easy to conflate with this allegation. The agency’s explanation so far hasn’t addressed the circumstances behind the allegations themselves, and whether further reporting follows looks set to be the next thing to watch.

  • Rakuten Won’t Re-Sign Pitcher Naoki Hiatari Next Season — Back in August He Apologized on Social Media Over a Money Dispute

On September 28, Rakuten announced it has notified pitcher Naoki Hiatari (21), now in his third year since joining straight out of high school, that it will not offer him a contract for next season. In August, it came to light that Hiatari had tried to borrow money from a minor, and he posted an apology on social media saying he “lacked financial discipline and awareness as a member of society.” Reactions on 5channel covered a wide range of angles: some pointed out the coincidence that his name contains the characters for “daily wage” (日当) and “night duty” (当直); others noted that a team like the Hiroshima Toyo Carp probably wouldn’t have made an issue of this, highlighting differences in team culture; and still others questioned a system that binds players to a team via reserve rights yet lets clubs cut them loose after just one year.

    Re: #60
If he's released as surplus to roster needs he becomes a free agent, so he's free to sign with another team

Background and Key Points of This Story

Release notices like this are standard offseason procedure for every team — the player involved becomes a free agent and can negotiate with other clubs. Rakuten hasn’t stated an explicit reason for the notice, but the backdrop widely cited is that in August it came to light Hiatari had approached a minor about borrowing money, and the matter was reportedly still being handled with the players’ union’s legal counsel involved. In the thread, some pointed to an asymmetry in the system: players are bound to their team by reserve rights until they reach free-agency eligibility, yet the team can unilaterally decline to renew a contract — and this case was held up as a textbook example. Many details, including the specific circumstances of the loan request and Hiatari’s relationship with the other party, haven’t been made clear in reporting, and some posts in the thread were speculative, so anything not confirmed as fact has been left out of the main text.

  • Sergio Echigo Blasts Japan’s Lineup Selection as ‘Stuck in a Rut’ — 5ch Split on the Take

Japan’s national football team beat Venezuela 2-1 in an international friendly at Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima on September 28, notching a second straight win following their victory over Uruguay. In a column for Nikkan Sports, commentator Sergio Echigo (81) criticized the approach of fielding a lineup centered on reserves and young players in the first half before bringing on the World Cup regulars in the second, calling it “stuck in a rut” and closing with “it’s unthinkable.” On 5ch, opinion was split between those arguing the nature of a friendly should be taken into account, and those agreeing that this approach does nothing to build up the bench.

    <International Friendly: Japan 2-1 Venezuela> ◇September 28◇Edion Peace Wing Hiroshima

Japan (FIFA ranking 17th), led by manager Hajime Moriyasu (58), who will stay on through next year’s Asian Cup, edged out Venezuela (ranked 47th). It was their second straight win, but Nikkan Sports commentator Sergio Echigo (81) pointed out a string of problems, closing with the word “unthinkable.”

Japan’s matches have become remarkably stuck in a rut. In the first half they send out young, inexperienced players who fail to get anything going, then bring on the core World Cup squad in the second half. That was true of the Uruguay match the other day, and it was true of this Venezuela match too.

    Re: #73
    Seriously, exactly
How much longer with Moriyasu? Isn't this a massive waste, since it just shrinks the time the next manager gets to work with?

Background and key points of this discussion

Sergio Echigo is a well-known, no-holds-barred columnist for Nikkan Sports, and this time his target was the lineup pattern manager Moriyasu has repeated friendly after friendly: fielding reserves and young players in the first half, then bringing on the World Cup regulars in the second. Friendlies are supposed to be a chance to test young and fringe players, but with FIFA rankings and next year’s Asian Cup on the line, results matter too, so opinion tends to split over whether development or winning should take priority. On the thread, one camp agreed that “if you don’t actually use young players as regulars, it doesn’t build depth,” while the other pushed back with “they’re forgetting what a friendly is for” and “it’s also a promotional event for sponsors and for growing the sport.” The national team is also set to face Ecuador and either Panama or New Zealand in the Kirin Cup this October, and whether this pattern of squad selection continues will be the thing to watch.

  • Live House Coming to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine Area — 5ch: ‘The Name TOKIO Is Just Terrible’

It’s been reported that a live house called “TOKIO KYOTO,” with a capacity of roughly 700 to 800, is set to open in January 2027 on a lot adjacent to Kyoto’s Heian Shrine. The operators reportedly built the concept around “Japanese-ness.” When the news hit 5ch’s Hello! Project board, discussion ranged across several angles: concern about how the facility’s name and location might affect the area’s scenery, how it would coexist with existing venues like Rohm Theatre Kyoto, and how it differs from the up-to-9,000-capacity “Kyoto Arena (tentative name)” being planned on the former site of the Muko-machi Velodrome. A defining feature of the thread was that welcoming voices and voices calling it a poor fit for the traditional townscape showed up side by side.

Could come in handy for Hello! Project
    5AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:00
Isn't this the place Eba and Kamifu wanted to play?
    6AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:01
    Juice=Juice can use Rohm Theatre
and everyone else could just use this place — seems like a good fit, no?

Kyoto's new live house, TOKIO KYOTO, set to open — standing capacity 700, theme is "Japanese-ness"

So is it Tokyo or Kyoto, make up your mind (lol)
    12AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:02
Haru-san's triumphant return to Rohm Theatre still hasn't happened, so let's just settle for this place instead
    15AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:03
Won't this get shut down fast over scenery complaints?
    22AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:10
Is it going up inside this?

    23AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:10
Fukuoka's PARCO is closing next February too, and it's being rebuilt into a 22-story building with a live house and hall inside
    Scale unknown
    24AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:12
If they slap the name 'TOKIO' on it, won't Kyoto locals just refuse to go?
They've got that pride thing going

    Re: #24
Isn't that more like Kenji Sawada?
    25AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:13
Perfect for Haru-san then — Rohm Theatre's already monopolized by Eba and Mifu
    26AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:14
    Live house
    KYOTO DO ESSE

I really hope they pull it off
Eba and Mifu should be in their prime by then
    29AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:17
But didn't they already do an event concert at Heian Shrine?
    30AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:18
Would be nice if Nishida could leave the Kanto region for once and make a triumphant return here too
    31AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:20
Taku Taku (a legendary Kyoto live house) is all we need
I'm so sick of out-of-towners pushing this 'tradition plus innovation' line
    32AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:21
    Seriously don't need this
I just don't know what to say… honestly
    I've got nothing
    36AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:24
TOKIO… the name is just way too bad
They've already stirred up needless backlash from Kyoto locals before even opening — it'll either fold fast or get forced into a rename
    37AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:25
Juice=Juice only does arena-class shows these days anyway
    38AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:26
Kyoto doesn't need some grubby little live house
    It'll ruin the scenery
    39AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:26
The stage is guaranteed to be super low
Worse than the CUTUP space at Tower Records
You'll only get a decent view up to the second row
    40AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:28
    800, huh
Kyoto locals hate noise, so it's hard to get permits for big halls here
    42AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:30
It's better than if they'd built it up in north Kyoto, but
still, what a weirdly complicated spot to build in
    43AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:35
Turns out Rohm Theatre has a small hall too — looked it up and it's 700 seats
Though that one's more for classical chamber music
Wonder if there's real demand for this one
    44AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:38
Came all the way from way out east Kyoto, did you
    45AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:42
It's such a beautiful part of town
Feels like exactly the kind of place where you shouldn't be running a live house
    46AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:46
They call it 'a live house that represents Japan, full of Japanese-ness,' but all I see is something that'll wreck the character of the neighborhood
    47AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:49
We've already got Gorilla Hall, no interest in going all the way to Kyoto
    Not exactly a fun city
    48AnonymousSep 28, 2026 19:54
The number of foreign tourists there now must be insane
Haven't been to Kyoto in like 20 years
Feels like it's changed even more than Shibuya has
    54AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:13

    55AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:17
So this'll be the new venue for Kansai-area Eba-Mifu events and bar events, huh
    58AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:37
    Re: #55
800 capacity is too small, right?
    57AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:32
Come on… I don't even know what to do with this… seriously, what do they want from me
Who's actually going to go to this thing
And what's with the theme being "Japanese-ness"
If that's the case, name the place in Japanese
What's with 'TOKIO KYOTO,' are they stupid
Who exactly are they winking at
    Who is this even for
    59AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:38
Wait, no, saying I haven't been to Kyoto in 20 years is an exaggeration
I traveled out for an early Juice=Juice release event at a place called Shin-Puh-Kan
It's a quirky spot, kind of like a shrunk-down version of LaZona or LaQua
That was probably the last time I went to Kyoto
    Around 2014 I think
    60AnonymousSep 28, 2026 20:42
I remember it being Chan-san's birthday event, 2013 maybe

Heian Shrine itself is a newcomer that was only built during the Meiji era

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

Heian Shrine is often talked about as though it’s a symbol of the “thousand-year-old capital,” but it’s actually a relatively new structure, built in 1895 (Meiji 28) to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the Heian capital — a point some commenters raised themselves. The newly reported “TOKIO KYOTO” is a commercial live house set to open on the adjacent site in January 2027, with a capacity of roughly 700 to 800, and its official concept is built around “Japanese-ness.” On the thread, the central points of debate were unease about a commercial facility moving into a traditionally scenic district, and concern that an English-mixed facility name might clash with local sentiment. At the same time, some Hello! Project fans welcomed the idea simply because it gives Kansai-area shows a new venue, so opinions were split. One thing readers might easily confuse is that this facility is a separate project from the up-to-9,000-capacity “Kyoto Arena (tentative name),” currently under construction on the former site of the Muko-machi Velodrome and slated to open in 2028 or later — commenters in the thread also expressed hope that the two venues, given their different scales, would end up serving different purposes.
