  • Nobody Buys Drinks from Vending Machines Anymore: DyDo Group Posts Record ¥30.3 Billion Loss, Plans to Cut 20,000 Machines

DyDo Group Holdings reported a record net loss of ¥30.3 billion for its fiscal year ending January 2026, and announced plans to cut 20,000 vending machines by fiscal 2026 from the roughly 270,000 it operated in fiscal 2024. The news sparked a thread on 5ch’s “Entertainment & Sports News+” board, triggered by an article introducing commentary from a vending machine enthusiast who appeared on the TV show “Matsuko’s Unknown World.” While some posters said “I haven’t bought from one in like 20 years,” plenty of others countered with “I buy a ton in summer” and “I still use them at work, in the office, or on walks,” revealing a split in usage depending on price and location.

No wonder they’re disappearing from the streets… A vending machine enthusiast who appeared on ‘Matsuko’s Unknown World’ explains the rise and fall of the vending machine business

Plenty of people probably can’t remember the last time they bought a drink from a vending machine.

“This past March, DyDo Group Holdings, whose core business is vending machines, announced its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending January 2026. It posted a record net loss of 30.3 billion yen. The company has also announced plans to cut 20,000 vending machines by fiscal 2026, down from roughly 270,000 in fiscal 2024,” said a reporter from a national newspaper’s business desk.

Sometimes you find vending machines selling Red Bull or Monster cheaper than usual.

Juice that's under 100 yen inside the supermarket
sometimes costs 200 yen at the vending machine right out front.
If you can buy it cheaper elsewhere, nobody's gonna buy from the machine.

That's because they attract illegal dumping.
It'd be fine if people only threw away containers from drinks bought at that specific machine, but people dump other trash in there too.

Wait, I thought they meant cutting it down to 20,000 machines from 270,000. (Misreading the headline — it's actually cutting BY 20,000, not TO 20,000.)

They jack up the price by 10 yen every time the consumption tax rate goes up.
They raise it early just because the machines can't take 1-yen coins.
I get going from 100 to 110 yen, but
if it's really about not being able to use 1-yen coins, there was no need to raise it at the 5% or 8% rate hikes —
it could've stayed at 110 yen until the rate actually hit 10%.
    15AnonymousOct 3, 2026 01:30
Raising the price by 10 yen for every 3-point tax hike doesn't even add up.

When I go to Kansai, there are tons of Cheerio vending machines, which is great.

    22AnonymousOct 3, 2026 01:34
I never buy cola in PET bottles,
so naturally I end up using vending machines a lot.
Lately it's annoying because even vending machines are mostly PET-bottle only.

    26AnonymousOct 3, 2026 01:36
It's basically flavored water, and with the container cost included it's way too expensive. The machine's turned into just a box for paying electricity bills.
    27AnonymousOct 3, 2026 01:37
Cheerio's Blues Coffee in a 500ml PET bottle is cheap at 110 yen, so I buy it sometimes. In winter it's sold hot, which is nice for warming your hands.

Lately there are more unmanned 24-hour gachapon (capsule toy) shops. This country's fallen so far that people pinch pennies on vending machine drinks but won't spare a cent for gachapon — what a childish state of affairs.

The rise of gachapon machines is more about convenience for businesses than consumer demand.
Simple mechanism, doesn't even need electricity.

Now that I don't walk a dog anymore, I've definitely drifted away from using them.
    47AnonymousOct 3, 2026 01:55
Probably electricity costs and restocking are the culprits.
I don't get why a vendor would bother going out just to restock it.
Didn't shops used to just restock the machine from their own stock back in the day?
    64AnonymousOct 3, 2026 02:10
    Re: #47
Restocking and maintenance are left entirely to the vendor — the shop just provides the space and electricity and takes a cut.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

The report behind this article concerns DyDo Group Holdings, whose core business is vending machines, cutting 20,000 of the roughly 270,000 machines it held as of fiscal 2024 by fiscal 2026, according to its fiscal 2026 January-term earnings. Note that this means reducing the fleet *by* 20,000 machines, not *down to* 20,000 — a misreading also pointed out in reply 10 — so it’s worth keeping in mind that the headline alone makes the scale easy to misunderstand. The underlying issue is that the traditional model, which relies on on-site restocking at the cost of electricity and labor, increasingly looks overpriced compared to the low-price competition from convenience stores and drugstores, the shift to cashless payments, and a history of price hikes timed to every consumption tax increase. Opinions in the thread were split between mostly urban voices saying “I haven’t bought from a vending machine in years” and others countering that they “still use them regularly at work, on the highway, or while out on walks,” suggesting the experience varies a lot depending on location and lifestyle.

Actress Honda Miyu (22) appeared at a public radio recording event for Bunka Hoso on October 2 and revealed that she considers 78-year-old actor Sasano Takashi — 56 years her senior — her one true friend. She explained that the two keep in touch via video calls and described their first meeting as an instant connection, using the Japanese phrase “bibibi” (a term for a sudden spark or love-at-first-sight feeling). On 5ch, reactions were split: some were stunned by a gap big enough to span grandfather and grandchild, others found the unlikely bond with the veteran actor heartwarming, while plenty of posts took a more teasing, off-color tone.

Nope, absolutely not, nothing, zero chance

Background and Key Points of This Story

Honda Miyu is a former competitive figure skater turned actress who’s been working since her child-star days. Sasano Takashi is a veteran character actor known for supporting roles on stage, screen, and TV — generationally closer to her grandfather than a peer. The thread’s split reaction comes down to whether posters took the friendship at face value or zeroed in on the age gap to mock it, with some of the latter comments getting personal about her looks and figure. Timing played a role too: a marriage announcement involving another former child star had just broken, so a wave of posts jumped to “Miyu’s next,” tying the story to other entertainment news by association. Celebrities publicly announcing cross-generational friendships isn’t unusual in itself, and this report just relays what the two said — but it’s worth noting that online reactions tend to default to a romantic framing regardless.

  • Namie Amuro’s “plunging neckline” photo sparks buzz — 8 years after retirement, fans say “it brings tears”

A photo of Namie Amuro showing off a plunging neckline, reported by Nishi-Nippon Sports, became a hot topic on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports Breaking News+ thread. Amuro, a native of Okinawa Prefecture, retired in September 2018 — eight years ago now. While many posters expressed nostalgia with comments like “So glad to see her” and “It brings tears to my eyes,” plenty of others pointed out that the photo itself appears to have been taken months earlier, questioning why it was being reported only now, and noting how unusual it is that no sightings have surfaced at all in this age of social media.

    Background and talking points

Namie Amuro held her retirement concert in Okinawa in September 2018, and is also known for having performed under her real name rather than a stage name. It’s unusual that so little sighting information has surfaced since her retirement, even in an era when social media is this pervasive, and the thread saw speculation that she might be living overseas. The photo in question appears to have been taken several months ago, which left many posters wondering why it was being reported only now. Some speculated it could be a “trial balloon” ahead of a possible comeback, and the thread stood out for reactions that went beyond simple nostalgia to probe the motives behind the report. The article does not clarify the circumstances in which the photo was taken or how it came to be published.

  • Comedian Kazutoyo Koyabu Fires Back at Inomata Backlash: “Does Being a Johnny’s Jr. Make You Well-Behaved?”

Responding to criticism that Inomata joined the group without going through the typical “Johnny’s Jr.” apprenticeship, Koyabu offered his own take: “Does going through the Jr. system make someone a well-behaved person?” On 5ch forums, opinions split over whether a lack of that apprenticeship experience has any real connection to a person’s conduct, with many users countering by pointing to past scandals involving Jr. graduates.

The "retirement at 22" rule was abolished.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

STARTO ENTERTAINMENT changed its name from the former Johnny’s Office after the 2023 official recognition of sexual abuse committed by founder Johnny Kitagawa against Jrs. under his management. Because of that history, “whether someone went through the Jr. system” tends to be discussed not merely as a matter of apprenticeship length, but as something tied to the agency’s troubled past. On the thread, opinions were split over whether apprenticeship experience actually affects a person’s conduct, with many commenters pushing back by citing past scandals involving Jr. graduates. Meanwhile, neither the details of the allegations against Inomata himself nor how timelesz will continue its activities going forward reached any clear consensus within the thread.

※This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “Kazutoyo Koyabu shares his view on criticism of Shuto Inomata’s lack of Jr. experience: “Does going through the Jr. system make you a well-behaved person?”“.

  • Shot Put Hits Student in the Head, Fractures Skull: 7th-Grade Girl Seriously Injured During Club Activities in Kasugai, Aichi

On September 30 at a public junior high school in Kasugai City, Aichi Prefecture, a female student (12) from the handball club entered the track and field club’s shot put practice area to retrieve a ball, and was struck in the head by a 4-5 kg shot put thrown by a male student, suffering a serious injury that fractured her skull. The student is hospitalized but able to talk, and the school has set up an investigative committee to look into the cause of the accident. In threads on 5ch, many users pointed out that similar throwing-event accidents have happened repeatedly in the past, while opinions split between those blaming the carelessness of the student who wandered into the practice area and those questioning the school’s responsibility for failing to secure a safe practice environment.

    10/2 (Fri) 20:06

The Kasugai City Board of Education in Aichi Prefecture announced on the 2nd that a first-year female junior high school student (12) suffered a serious injury, fracturing her skull, after being struck in the head by a shot put during club activities at a city junior high school in late September. The student was taken to the hospital and remains hospitalized, but is reportedly able to speak. The school has set up an investigative committee to look into the cause of the accident.

According to the board of education, at around 4:30 p.m. on September 30, a female student from the handball club entered the track and field club’s shot put practice area on the school grounds to retrieve a ball that had rolled in, and was struck in the head by an iron shot put weighing roughly 4 to 5 kg, thrown by a male student. The school reported the accident to the Kasugai Police Station on October 1.

    Background and Points of Debate

Throwing events like shot put and hammer throw are often held in a limited corner of the schoolyard, and accidents in which students from other clubs wander into the practice area during club activities have occurred at schools around the country before. In this case, the accident happened when a female student entered the track and field club’s practice area to retrieve a ball from her own club, and opinions in the thread were split between those pointing to the fault of the student for entering a dangerous area, and those questioning the school’s management responsibility for failing to safely isolate the throwing area. Including whether charges such as professional negligence resulting in injury will be filed, where responsibility for the accident ultimately lies will depend on the prefectural police’s ongoing investigation, and at this point it remains unclear whether the school or the student bears greater fault.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Produced by Yomiuri TV, “Miyane-ya” launched in 2006 and ran for roughly 20 years as a daily national news/talk program on the Nippon TV network; its ending appears to be part of a broader schedule reshuffle across the network. In the thread, complaints about host Seiji Miyane’s hosting style outweighed any nostalgia for the show itself, with several commenters citing specific moments — like talking over a reporter’s explanation or cutting in while a guest was still speaking. That said, the end of Miyane-ya doesn’t mean Miyane himself is stepping back: he’s expected to keep appearing on Fuji TV’s “Mr. Sunday,” a point users in the thread confirmed with each other. This is where readers can easily get the wrong idea — conflating the show’s end with a drop in Miyane’s overall TV presence — when in fact his work on other programs continues. As for why Miyane specifically draws so much hate, no clear answer emerged in the thread; beyond general dislike of his on-air persona as a host, no concrete reasoning was offered.

He was dropping hints he might show up on Plus

Though even if he did, it probably wouldn't get much buzz

Background and Key Points of This Topic

‘DOWNTOWN+’ is a paid streaming service Hitoshi Matsumoto has been running since the period of reduced public appearances that followed the Shukan Bunshun reports in late 2023, and this casting of Chidori’s Daigo is the first piece of content for its 1st-anniversary celebration. The flood of comments pointing out low subscriber numbers and poor viewership can be read as the flip side of people’s interest in whether Matsumoto, since his comeback, has managed to recapture his old level of buzz. Some posts floated the idea that the service is ‘effectively disbanded,’ pointing to how rarely Masatoshi Hamada appears on it, but this could just as easily come down to programming or scheduling decisions, and nothing conclusive has actually been shown. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the idea of Yoshimoto grooming Daigo as ‘the next Matsumoto’ is speculation from bystanders, not something either man has actually said.

  • ‘Wakatte.tv’ Returns From Hiatus — Opening Disclaimer Splits Opinion

“Wakatte.tv,” the YouTube channel known for its banter about academic pedigree, resumed activity on October 1. The hiatus traces back to an August 28 video in which member Fumin Takada made inappropriate remarks about a student’s comments on radiation and nuclear power, sparking controversy and a subsequent apology. The comeback video opened with a disclaimer reading, “If you have a complex about your educational background, please refrain from watching,” but reactions on 5ch were split — some asked “Isn’t this disclaimer itself a provocation?” while others countered that “a disclaimer doesn’t give you a free pass to say anything.”

"Hey, aren't you just a quota pick!" "Cut it out, you!" (referring to preferential admission slots for women at some Japanese universities, a frequent flashpoint in these debates)

Background and Key Points of the Debate

“Wakatte.tv” built its popularity on a format where the cast critiques each other’s academic pedigree, and the new disclaimer looks like an extension of that same shtick. Still, many on the thread pointed out that despite resuming right after apologizing over the radiation remark, the show kept its academic-background-teasing stance from the very opening — prompting comments like “a disclaimer doesn’t excuse saying anything you want.” The debate was further complicated by the fact that some cast members themselves are high school graduates or attended universities outside the top tier, blurring the line between who gets to mock academic background and who’s on the receiving end. While some viewers say the show motivates them to study, others see the whole format as drawing lines based on academic pedigree and view it critically — leaving opinions firmly split.

  • Erika Sawajiri Crashes Miyane-ya’s Final Episode — 5ch’s Verdict: ‘Whatever’

Yomiuri TV’s long-running information program “Miyane-ya” aired its 5,134th and final episode on October 2, 2026. To close out a show that had run for more than 16 years since its debut in late July 2006, actress Erika Sawajiri made a surprise appearance. The program looked back on a 2010 stunt in which a director traveled all the way to Spain to try to interview Sawajiri at the apartment where she was staying — only for her to vanish inside in a mere three seconds. Asked why she’d agreed to come on this time, Sawajiri at one point answered with her old signature line, “Whatever” (betsu ni). Reactions on 5ch were split between those who enjoyed the exchange and those questioning the show’s judgment in featuring someone with a past drug conviction.

“Information Live Miyane-ya,” the Yomiuri TV/NTV afternoon wide show hosted by Seiji Miyane (63) (weekdays, 1:55 PM), aired its final episode today, October 2. Erika Sawajiri made a surprise appearance, looking back on a doorstep interview attempt from 16 years ago.

“Information Live Miyane-ya,” which began on July 31, 2006, reached its 5,134th and final broadcast today, October 2. Sixteen years ago, the show had tried to land an exclusive interview with Erika Sawajiri. In 2010, a director traveled to Spain and tracked down the apartment building where she was staying. He managed “three seconds” of contact with her there, but Sawajiri hurried back inside before the interview could happen.

    70AnonymousOct 2, 2026 17:08
Re: #67 Yuki Saito's still appearing in dramas too, you know.

    Background and Points of Debate

Erika Sawajiri was arrested in 2009 on suspicion of possessing the synthetic drug MDMA and received a guilty verdict (suspended sentence) for violating the Narcotics Control Law. As pointed out within the thread, she was arrested again in November 2019, indicted that December, and sentenced in February 2020 to 1 year and 6 months in prison, suspended for 3 years. At the time, this forced NHK’s Taiga historical drama “Kirin ga Kuru” to reshoot scenes already filmed, sending shockwaves through the industry. What split opinion in the thread was how to judge the TV station’s decision to feature her again given that history. Criticism that “letting bygones be bygones and booking her anyway shows how lax the show is” ran roughly even with more sympathetic takes that “it was sincere of her to come back and personally close out a segment from 16 years ago.” It’s also easy to overlook that the original doorstep interview attempt never actually succeeded — contact lasted only three seconds before she disappeared inside.

  • New Oishinbo, the First Full Sequel in 35 Years, Reveals Yamaoka and Yuzan’s Voices

A new teaser trailer and stills for “New Oishinbo,” set to air in 2027, have been released, revealing the voices of Shiro Yamaoka (Yohei Azakami), Yuko Kurita (Hitomi Sasasaki), and Yuzan Kaibara (Akio Otsuka) for the first time. The original manga, written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, has sold a cumulative 135 million copies. On 5ch, opinions clashed between those praising the character designs for moving closer to the art style of the manga’s later chapters and those worried about the thin CG linework and cheap-looking visuals. Some who remember the cultural atmosphere of the ’90s voiced skepticism about whether reviving that mood today even makes sense, and the fact that the broadcaster hasn’t been announced also drew attention.

The trouble with CG anime is how the lines get all wobbly and limp, and the screen looks too bright/glaring.

In an age where you have to eat even when it doesn't taste good, huh.
    36AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:13
So Kaibara Yuzan's voice is being played by Otsuka's son.

They should've made it back when they had the chance to make it.
    Feels pretty late now.

Is this a remake starting from episode 1, or a continuation from the original series?
    39AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:17
Could they even air the '30 points' episode these days? (the infamous episode where a dish was scored just 30 out of 100)

    Re: #1
    The art looks cheap.

    Re: #42
    Yeah, it does feel low-budget.
    57AnonymousOct 2, 2026 15:45
If they kept it exactly like the old days it'd probably blow up online, so I wonder if they can actually rework the script properly.

    Re: #57
I can't imagine the original author allowing any reworking, so they'll probably just stick to inoffensive, compliance-safe stories.

The art looks more like the original manga than the previous anime did, but it feels kind of flat.

    Re: #74
The previous anime killed what made the original manga good.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The original “Oishinbo” is a food manga written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, a hit series with a cumulative 135 million copies sold. The original anime aired in the ’90s, but as pointed out in the thread, the story was left hanging right at the “Ultimate vs. Supreme” wedding reception showdown, and this new work is positioned as a “full sequel” picking up where that left off. Opinions in the thread were mainly split over the animation: some praised the character designs for moving closer to the art style of the manga’s later chapters, while others worried about the thin CG linework and cheap-looking visuals. There were also comments in the thread claiming that Akio Otsuka, who voices Yuzan Kaibara, is the son of the voice actor who previously played the role — but this is a claim made by thread posters, not an official announcement, and fact-checking it is outside the scope of this article. The broadcaster has not been announced as of this writing, and the growing trend of withholding broadcaster names until the last minute in recent anime releases is also part of why it became a topic of discussion in the thread.
