  • One Piece Already Wrapping Up Broadcast for the Year — Dragon Ball Takes Over the Timeslot in October

One Piece ended its main-story broadcast for 2026 with episode 1180, “Elbaf of Despair – The Devil’s Contract: Domi Riversi,” which aired on September 27. This year’s run followed a January–March hiatus, with the Elbaf arc airing for just six months starting in April; the next installment won’t air until 2027. Starting in October, Dragon Ball takes over the same timeslot. On 5ch, discussion spread in all directions — from criticism of the long-running anime’s pacing, to how to read a 2.4% TV rating, to comments on the aging voice cast and the use of AI.

One Piece Already Wrapping Up Its 2026 Broadcast… What’s Behind the “New Rule”? Dragon Ball Takes Over in October as National Icons Pass the Baton

The TV anime One Piece, broadcast on the Fuji TV network, ended its main-story broadcast for 2026 with episode 1180, “Elbaf of Despair – The Devil’s Contract: Domi Riversi (黒転支配),” which aired on the 27th. The next broadcast is set for 2027, with further details yet to be announced.

Throughout 2026, One Piece ran the “Elbaf arc,” but the season didn’t actually start until April — January through March was a hiatus — making for a six-month broadcast run.

This is probably the right way to adapt a still-ongoing manga — no pointless padding, no cliffhangers where everyone just stares at each other until "to be continued next week."

Oda keeps saying he'll never give anyone time-based or water-based powers, then quietly introduces that kind of power anyway. He's also said the One Piece treasure is something tangible — but there's still a chance it ends up being something abstract, like "One Piece = friendship."

Both Dragon Ball's and One Piece's lead voice actors are pretty elderly at this point — are they actually making concrete plans for successors? Mayumi Tanaka isn't as old as Masako Nozawa, but at the current serialization pace, it's doubtful she can keep up a proper voice-acting career all the way until One Piece actually finishes. Even the new Netflix remake — no matter how much faster-paced it is than the TV broadcast version — there's no way it finishes airing in time either.

There's no sane way to power anyone up further from here.

    Re: #92
One Piece never does anime-original filler at all. Before the hiatus, it used to run a recap compilation episode once a month, and it also burned a few minutes at the start of each episode recapping the previous one to stretch out the runtime. With this latest shake-up, both the monthly recap episodes and the previous-episode recaps are gone.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

One Piece resumed its anime adaptation this April with the Elbaf arc, following a January–March hiatus, and wraps up its 2026 broadcast with episode 1180 on September 27. The comments about aging voice actors and AI use reflect the flip side of the source manga passing 900 chapters, with long-term serialization now the norm. The thread split over how much weight to give the TV ratings — one side argued for cancellation based on the 2.4% figure, while the other said it should be judged on overall strength, including streaming and merchandise revenue. There’s also criticism of past padding, like the Katakuri fight, but some pointed out that this latest restructuring cut the recap compilations and previous-episode recaps to pick up the pace — so a simple “it drags on” criticism doesn’t fully capture the current reality. One point readers can easily get wrong: “ending the broadcast for the year” doesn’t mean cancellation or the series wrapping up — it’s simply a hiatus until 2027.

  • Hideki Arai’s ‘SPUNK’ Gets Movie Adaptation — Directed by Keisuke Yoshida, Opens Fall 2027

Hideki Arai’s manga ‘SPUNK’ is being adapted into a film directed by Keisuke Yoshida, set for release in fall 2027. The original work was co-created with Yumiko Kagami, owner of the real-life legendary S&M salon ‘Eureka,’ and has been serialized in Monthly Comic Beam since 2022. On 5ch’s entertainment/sports news board (Geisoku), though, the thread quickly veered away from the actual content — the word ‘Spunk’ sent posters down memory lane to the 45-year-old dog anime ‘Ohayo Spunk,’ sparking a wave of nostalgia over its theme song and voice cast.

    October 1, 2026

Hideki Arai’s manga ‘SPUNK,’ set in the world of an S&M salon, has been confirmed for a film adaptation directed by Keisuke Yoshida. It will open in fall 2027.

‘SPUNK’ is a collaboration between Hideki Arai, the manga artist known for ‘From Miyamoto to You’ and ‘The World Is Mine,’ and Yumiko Kagami, owner of the real-life legendary S&M salon ‘Eureka.’ It was serialized in Monthly Comic Beam (KADOKAWA) from May 2022 to July 2024 before being collected into volumes. The series built up a fervent following during its run and counts many fans across the film and culture worlds.

    Background and Talking Points

‘Ohayo Spunk’ was a TV anime that aired on TBS in 1981 depicting the bond between a boy and his dog — it shares nothing but the name with Hideki Arai’s S&M manga. Yet most of the thread’s replies latched onto nostalgia for this old anime rather than discussing the new film itself. The exchanges about voice actress Noriko Tsukase’s career, and the mix-ups with ‘Dekirukana’ and ‘Dotera Man’ (which aired on the same network), make for an entertaining read, showing how memories of the show vary by generation. On the other hand, almost no one touched on the S&M elements of the source manga or director Keisuke Yoshida’s style, so how the film adaptation news itself will actually be received remains to be seen.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5ch (Entertainment/Sports News Plus) thread ‘Hideki Arai’s manga ‘SPUNK’ to be made into a film, directed by Keisuke Yoshida, theme is ‘S&M,’ opens fall 2027.’

Given the scale of an entirely new production from start to finish, reactions on 5ch were mixed: some were enthusiastic, while others voiced skepticism about whether it could be “acceptable by today’s standards.” The thread ranged from debates over whether recent remakes tend to succeed or fail, to concerns about how much of the original’s trademark crude humor could survive under current broadcast standards, to discussion of production trends aimed at overseas markets.

Even if it's popular overseas, that's really just a subset of otaku and kids — over 80% of revenue still comes from the domestic market, so it's still nowhere near the game industry, which has actually captured a real overseas market.

Even calling it a "hit in India" really just means it's one of the Japanese anime kids watch there — it's not like everyone knows it.

After Bobobo got cancelled from the national network, it dropped down to local broadcasts, and depending on the affiliate station, the ending of the "final national episode" came in two versions — one implying no local continuation, one implying it would continue locally.
Though there were also stations that aired the "no continuation" version and still ended up continuing it locally anyway.

Tsurupika Hagemaru had stuff in it that was basically dog abuse — that one made me recoil.

Wasn't it cancelled over the cross-network thing instead?

Background and Key Points of This Topic

“Obocchama-kun” is a manga by Yoshinori Kobayashi, and the original anime also aired on the TV Asahi network, so this marks a kind of “homecoming” to that same station. Opinion in the thread split over the track record of recent remakes — some pointed out that successful remakes are rare, while others countered that such impressions are just nostalgia bias affecting how people judge things. Some posts claimed the production involves overseas capital, but there is no such mention in the official announcement, so this could not be confirmed. There is also strong interest in how much of the original’s trademark crude humor can survive under today’s broadcast standards, with attention focused not just on nostalgia but on “how it will be remade for the current era.”

※This article is compiled as an excerpt and summary from the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “[Anime] “Obocchama-kun” Returns After 35 Years! Airing Next Year on TV Asahi, Marking the Manga’s 40th Anniversary, All-New Episodes Throughout.”

  • 2026 Fall Anime Season Swells to Nearly 100 Titles — 5ch: ‘Who’s Actually Watching All This? lol’

Animatetimes published its lineup of anime premiering in October 2026, and on 5ch’s Entertainment/Sports News+ board, users reacted to a rundown spanning new titles and reruns. Some shared what they’re planning to watch — Blue Box, The Apothecary Diaries, the To Aru (“A Certain…”) series — while others were stunned that the list swells to nearly 100 titles once reruns are included, asking “who’s actually watching all this?” Others vented over the Medalist rerun, demanding “just hurry up and give us new episodes already.” The thread also filled in extra details along the way, like confirmation that The Fable Season 2 starts in January 2027.

    Re: #77
There's a movie coming out in February, so there's a spinoff planned for the January season

    Background and Points of Discussion

This roundup is based on the broadcast list that major anime news site animatetimes publishes every season, which by tradition includes not just new titles but reruns and spinoffs of past works as well. That’s why the Medalist rerun might look like a halfhearted move, but as the thread itself points out, it’s actually tied to a spinoff rollout timed with the theatrical film releasing in February — not simply filler. It’s also easy to overlook that shows like “Kamen Rider Meiss,” a tokusatsu series, get slotted into the anime programming block, blurring the line between genres. In recent years the number of titles airing in a single broadcast season (cour) has been trending upward, and the growing burden on viewers to decide what to actually keep up with underlies a lot of the reaction in the thread.

  • Voice Actor Kenjiro Tsuda Loses AI Voice-Cloning Lawsuit — 5ch: “No Matter How You Listen, That’s Clearly Tsuda’s Voice”

Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda sued the operator of the video app TikTok, demanding removal of a video that used AI to clone his voice without permission. On September 30, the Tokyo District Court dismissed Tsuda’s claim, apparently mainly because the video had already been taken down before the lawsuit was filed. At the same time, the ruling marked the first time a court has suggested that a person’s voice could be protected under “publicity rights,” making the outcome more nuanced than a simple win or loss. On 5ch, reactions ranged from astonishment at how accurately the voice was reproduced, to an understanding that the removal request was the only real point at issue, to confusion over the fact that no law yet directly regulates AI voice cloning.

Voice actor Kenjiro Tsuda filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app TikTok, seeking removal of a video in which someone had used generative AI to imitate his voice without permission. The Tokyo District Court issued its ruling on September 30. Presiding Judge Aya Takahashi dismissed Tsuda’s claim.

Do your own impression, or process your own voice data yourself
Even rap sampling has time-length limits
No matter how much you process it, using the original data at all makes it a rip-off
Process your own voice to sound similar instead

    Re: #106
That's not really the story. It's just that the video was already deleted, so there was nothing left to actually demand

Background and Key Points of This Story

Publicity rights attribute the customer-drawing power (economic value) of a celebrity’s name or likeness to that person; the requirements were laid out in a 2012 Supreme Court ruling (the Pink Lady case), and the right has mainly been recognized in relation to names and likenesses since then. Today’s ruling draws attention because it’s the first to suggest this protection could also extend to a person’s “voice.” On 5ch, opinions are split between those reading the dismissal of the removal request as “AI voice mimicry has been ruled legal” and those who understand it as simply meaning the request lost practical purpose because the video was already deleted — a distinction that makes the ruling’s real substance easy to misread. Japan still has no law directly regulating AI voice mimicry, making this an early test case for the legal framework that exists short of one.

  • Tenmaku no Jadoogar Producer Slams Anime for ‘Isekai Overload, No Diversity’ — 5ch Fires Back

A producer of the anime “Tenmaku no Jadoogar” remarked that “recent anime is all isekai, there’s no diversity,” and the comment got picked up on 5ch. Since the show itself is set in a harem with a strong isekai flavor, the thread was quick to fire back with jabs like “look who’s talking” and “they’re just playing the diversity card because they can’t compete on popularity.” At the same time, some users broke down what set hits like “Mushoku Tensei” and “Frieren” apart from other isekai, while others defended the industry by pointing to production costs and streaming revenue, so the discussion didn’t split neatly into one side or the other.

    Re: #105
It just keeps dragging on with behind-the-scenes political scheming

Background and Key Points of This Debate

So-called “Narou-style” isekai works — named for the web novel site where many originate — are said to keep getting greenlit because their built-in fanbase and proven source material make it easier for production committees to justify funding, keeping the adaptations coming. In the thread, most reactions focused less on the producer’s “no diversity” comment itself and more on the irony that their own show is a strongly isekai-flavored harem drama. At the same time, some pointed to the gap between this show and works like “Mushoku Tensei” and “Frieren,” which won huge support despite also being isekai, arguing that it’s the quality of execution — not the genre label — that drives popularity, which keeps the discussion from being a simple case of “the isekai criticism boomerangs back on you.” Note that the comments about how many shows are in production or their budgets reflect general industry perception voiced in the thread, not verified figures.

Sasuke always came off as just a straight-up unhinged character to me, never got why he was so popular.

Background and Key Points of Discussion

A notable feature of this announcement is that it’s being made at an overseas event, New York Comic Con — in recent years, more and more popular titles like “ONE PIECE” and “Dragon Ball” have timed their new information reveals to overseas events. The original article only mentions a “brand-new anime,” without clarifying whether it centers on Naruto himself, adapts manga material that hasn’t been animated yet, or tells an entirely new story. The thread also raised the question of whether this is really about Naruto rather than his son Boruto — that will have to wait for more details on October 10. Many commenters claimed Naruto is “more popular overseas,” but it’s worth noting this is based on personal impressions rather than any concrete sales or viewership figures presented in the thread.

*This article is compiled from excerpts and a summary of the 5ch (Geinou/Sports News+) thread “‘NARUTO’ Brand-New Anime: New Info Coming 10.10, Worldwide Simultaneous Reveal at NY Comic Con.”

  • Manga Titles Have Doubled in Length Over 15 Years — “Reincarnated” and “Lady” Buzzwords Surge

When e-book store BookLive analyzed its own catalog data to mark passing 2 million cumulative distributed titles, it found that the average character count of manga titles had roughly doubled over the past 15 years. In shōnen and seinen (boys’/young men’s) manga, words like “another world,” “reincarnation,” and “strongest” have become conspicuous, while shōjo and josei (girls’/women’s) manga shifted from love- and marriage-focused terms around 2016 to more raw, real-life words like “housewife,” “toxic (black),” and “neighborhood” by around 2019. On 5channel, reactions ranged from jokes about “villainess”-genre title clichés to comments noting that long titles have actually been around for ages.

It’s no longer unusual these days to spot manga on shelves or in apps with long titles like “The Strongest… Who Got Exiled,” but how much have titles actually grown? E-book store BookLive analyzed titles from its own catalog to mark passing 2 million cumulative distributed copies, and found that the average character count had doubled over 15 years.

The words used in titles have also shifted over the past decade. In shōnen and seinen manga, for example, terms like “another world,” “reincarnation,” and “strongest” have risen to the top, reflecting a growing tendency to convey the setting or the protagonist’s powers right in the title.

The change looks even more dramatic in shōjo and josei manga. Compared to 2016, when love-centered words like “love,” “marriage,” and “romance” dominated, by around 2019 titles were leaning toward grittier, real-life drama terms like “housewife,” “toxic (black),” and “neighborhood.”

Man, there sure are a lot of reincarnation stories out there.
But if a nobody like us with no talent or skills got reincarnated, we couldn't actually do anything with it —
we'd probably just end up living out our life as a lowly nobody in the new world too.

People pick these up because they want catharsis — a way to vent the frustration of their own crappy, low-status lives.

When it comes to long titles, the manga adaptation of "Chi-Fuyo" (short for a cheat-skill isekai title roughly 100 characters long) pulls off its title payoff through pure, absurd brute force lol

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Behind the lengthening of titles lies the web-novel culture epitomized by the site “Shōsetsuka ni Narō” (“Let’s Become a Novelist”). Because a story’s premise had to be conveyed within the few characters shown on a ranking list, titles that crammed in the whole synopsis became the norm — and industry insiders often note that this habit spread to ordinary bookstore shelves as those works were turned into published novels and manga adaptations. On the thread, opinions split over the blanket claim that “long title = bad work”: some pointed to examples like “Your Lie in April,” where a short title still lands a powerful payoff, while others argued length and quality have nothing to do with each other. Some also brought up Shōwa-era pop songs like “The Room, the Dress Shirt, and Me” and works of foreign literature, noting that long titles are hardly a new technique. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the underlying data comes from a single company, BookLive, and its own distributed catalog — not a comprehensive survey of the publishing industry as a whole.

*This article is excerpted and summarized from the 5channel (Geinō/Sports News Plus) thread “Manga Titles Have Grown “Twice” as Long on Average Over 15 Years… What’s the Reason? A Clear Trend of Surging “Reincarnation” and “Lady” Words.”

In voice acting, only about the top 20 at the very peak of the pyramid actually make real money

    Re: #118
    20 people is way too few — there's probably 100 to 200

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Japan’s voice acting industry is said to have far fewer major job openings than the number of talent signed to agencies, so only a small handful at the top actually earn a living from it. Points raised in the thread — like the claim that “only those near the top of the pyramid actually make money,” or that “you can’t keep doing this unless your family is well-off” — reflect structural issues commonly discussed across the whole industry, not something unique to this case. It’s worth noting that this retirement is an official announcement covered by the sports newspaper Nikkan Sports, sourced from her own X post — this is a documented, real event, not speculation. On the other hand, while many commenters expressed surprise at how “unknown” she was given her thin résumé, voice actresses who belong to idol-style units often have individual acting credits that don’t stand out much by nature, so a mismatch between name recognition and actual track record is easy to misread. No solid information about the reason for her retirement emerged in the thread, and a lot of the comments never got past speculation.

  • Manga About a Disabled Protagonist Getting Tormented Sparks Backlash — 5ch: ‘At Least Do Some Research’

A manga depicting a disabled woman subjected to relentless cruelty has become a hot topic on 5ch, after details emerged of how an editor decided to greenlight it for serialization. The series itself has been known for a while, but the recent announcement of an anime adaptation reignited questions about compliance standards and the author’s apparent lack of research. Rather than objecting to the mere depiction of a disabled character, most posters in the thread took issue with how the protagonist’s personality is written and with the author’s research (or lack thereof), sparking debate over why the equally brutal ‘Ushijima the Loan Shark’ gets treated so differently.

What kind of compliance department lets this through?

Attack on Titan is way worse — episode 1 alone has the mom getting eaten by a giant humanoid creature, the kid's hometown gets overrun so he can't live there anymore, and he ends up a child soldier because he's got no family left. That's messed up too.

The reason Mii-chan gets so much hate isn't that she's disabled — it's that she's just rotten at her core.

They could've at least given her some redeeming talent somewhere.

    Re: #47
Lol 😂 true, that manga mocks everyone equally.

Mii-yama, on the other hand, tends to have bad people (personality included) come out ahead. Probably just reflects the author's own worldview.

Push any garbage hard enough and it'll still sell decently.
This whole controversy is probably just a case of them marketing it to death, the backlash getting too loud, the plan falling apart, and now there's infighting over it.

    Re: #60
Is there really anything like that?
I'm not counting obscure manga nobody's heard of that never got an anime.
There's plenty of depressing or dark manga out there, but I can't think of anything more genuinely evil than Mii-yama.
    66AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:51
    Re: #60
Same thing happened with 'Second Life in Another World' — the anime announcement was the trigger that got the author's past racist remarks exposed too.
    72AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:54
It was hilarious watching the anti-feminist, anti-liberal 'free speech warriors' pose as 'allies of otaku' while defending Mii-yama.
These guys can barely even properly watch a manga or anime anymore — don't go calling yourself an otaku.

    76AnonymousSep 28, 2026 09:58
There's kind of a growing trend in society where pointing out blunt, harsh truths is seen as tactless.
I sort of sensed that coming back when the whole genetics controversy was stirring things up.
    78AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:03
    Re: #76
Even if that was the intent, I think the main issue is the author is too ignorant for it to actually read as realism.
Once it creates an echo chamber where ignorant people hype each other up and that gets broadly promoted, that's when real trouble starts.
    80AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:05
    Re: #76
You do see a bit of a pattern where people who don't actually understand reality all that well go around shouting 'this is how the real world works! We're the smart ones who get it!' — and then get dogpiled for it.
    84AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:10
    At least do some research.
Even though 'Ushijima the Loan Shark' is the same kind of shock-value manga, it was built on real research to get to that level.
    93AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:17
    Re: #84
    Fair point.
You can tell manga like 'Stardust Prince' (another shock-value manga on the Manga One app, about a host club) actually did its research too.
    105AnonymousSep 28, 2026 10:32

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

This isn’t the first time a ‘shock-value’ work centered on a disabled protagonist has sparked conflict — debates over how fiction portrays vulnerable people have flared up before, including past controversy over genetics-related content. In the thread, opinion split between criticizing the mere fact that a disabled character was depicted versus criticizing the protagonist’s personality and the author’s lack of research, with the latter view being the majority position. Works cited for comparison, such as ‘Ushijima the Loan Shark’ and ‘Stardust Prince,’ were praised for being grounded in actual research despite similarly shock-value subject matter, framed as the key difference from this work. At the same time, some posts conflated this criticism with a separate controversy over the author’s past discriminatory remarks tied to a different work — worth noting for readers, since the two are distinct incidents.
