  • Is Piling Rice on the Back of the Fork Really Proper Manners? 5ch Says: ‘Fake Showa-Era Urban Legend’

A personal story went viral on social media after a stranger told a woman at a restaurant that “proper manners require eating rice balanced on the back of your fork.” On 5ch, many commenters argued this eating style is actually a myth that spread during Japan’s Showa era and isn’t standard practice in the West at all — while others pointed to real regional differences, noting that “the British style puts food on the back of the fork, while the American style uses the front.” The discussion expanded into other “correct way to eat” debates, like whether to twirl pasta on a fork or the quirks of eating fried rice with a Chinese soup spoon, with opinions split down the middle.

    Like others are saying,
it's probably the same deal as the pasta-twirling thing.

Nobody in actual Italy does that either —
they just scoop it up with the fork and eat it as is.
That said, slurping too loudly is a no-go,

putting it on the front of the fork is the American style.

    Re: #501
And serving rice with chopsticks stuck straight up in it — that's the Chinese style.

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The practice of “piling rice on the back of the fork” is said to have been widely taught in Japanese school education and etiquette books during the Showa era, but actual Western dining customs vary considerably by region. Within the thread, commenters themselves pointed out that “the British style uses the back, the American style uses the front” and “France uses the front too,” showing there’s no single, unified “overseas manner.” The same goes for whether or not to twirl pasta — tourist-facing performances and locals’ everyday eating habits are easily confused on this point. What readers can easily get wrong is assuming “the manners I was taught growing up” equal a universally correct standard, when customs actually vary by country, region, and the formality of the setting. The disagreement in the thread largely stemmed from differing firsthand accounts of “what I personally saw abroad.”

  • Portugal Tops Group With Four Straight Nations League Wins Without Ronaldo — Xavi’s Netherlands Also Picks Up Second Win

Portugal, playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, have won their first four matches of the UEFA Nations League. In the October 4 clash with Norway, they conceded a stunning goal to defender Ajer in the first half, but Cancelo’s long-range strike leveled the score before Portugal completed a 2-1 comeback win. Meanwhile, the Netherlands — in Xavi’s debut as a national team manager after stints at Barcelona and Bayern — also picked up their second win. Opinions in the thread were split between “the team actually works better without Ronaldo” and “it’s too early to judge since they haven’t faced any strong opponents yet,” and the discussion also branched out into comparisons of Ronaldo’s and Messi’s career records.

    〈UEFA Nations League〉 ◇ October 4 (October 5 Japan time) ◇ League A, Groups 2 & 4, Matchday 4

In Group 4, Portugal (FIFA ranking 5th), playing without Cristiano Ronaldo, came from behind to beat Norway (ranked 19th) 2-1, extending their winning streak to four matches to open the tournament.

In the 36th minute of the first half, Norway’s Ajer scored a jaw-dropping goal from a set piece. But two minutes later, Portugal answered right back when Cancelo, receiving a long throw-in, unleashed a powerful long-range strike.

    Cristiano's thing was explosiveness.
His burst of speed was just insane.

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

Unlike the World Cup or the European Championship, the UEFA Nations League has a wide gap in strength between competing nations, and so far Portugal’s matches — including this one against Norway — have mostly been against opponents who aren’t quite evenly matched, with clashes against top-tier teams still to come. That’s why the thread was split between the view that “the team is more cohesive without Ronaldo” and the view that “the opposition level has been too low to draw any real conclusions,” with no consensus reached. There were also several replies asking to confirm “wait, is this the Xavi from Barcelona?” — showing that many readers weren’t aware this is his first stint as a national team manager since stepping down from club management. The Ronaldo-vs-Messi comparison, meanwhile, is the kind of topic that resurfaces in nearly every thread like this one, and while the back-and-forth over their respective records continued here too, no new conclusion was reached.

When she mentioned on another show that she was a fan, he showed up as a surprise and she turned into a total puddle lol

Background and Key Points of the Discussion

It’s not unusual for celebrities to give their fans a nickname, and within the thread some posters compared the cleverness of the naming to another well-known fan nickname, “unicorn” (Reply 23). Because “weirdo” can also read as sarcastic taken at face value, reactions split over whether it’s an affectionate nickname or a jab, with one cooler-headed reply asking, “Being happy about this does make you a weirdo, sure, but you know you’re being mocked, right?” Meanwhile, the sheer scale of the reaction — 1.369 million impressions — speaks to just how widely the post was read. Several replies also brought up her younger sister, actress Hirose Suzu, suggesting that the contrast between the two sisters’ public images shaped how the topic spread.

Doesn't your place not even have LUUP by the station?

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

LUUP is an electric-scooter sharing service classified as a “specified small motorized bicycle” under a 2023 legal revision — riders 16 and older don’t need a driver’s license, and helmets are only recommended, not required, which is the backdrop for the thread’s “is it really okay to ride this?” reactions. Service locations are concentrated in major metro areas like Tokyo and Osaka, so the comments noting it’s rarely seen in the countryside aren’t a joke — they reflect the service’s actual rollout. That said, the worries about falls or drunk driving go beyond what the show itself reported and should be read as speculation, not confirmed fact.

  • Yoshinobu Yamamoto to start again the day after tomorrow? Fans spar over why he’s only the ‘No. 3’ starter

As the Dodgers push deeper into the MLB playoffs, a 5ch live-commentary thread lit up over news that Yoshinobu Yamamoto will start again the day after tomorrow. Posters repeatedly questioned the decision to slot him as the “number three” starter — some pointed to a tactical reason (he reportedly performs better on the road than at home), while others just vented frustration at the other starters. Shohei Ohtani’s hitting drew mixed reviews too: he hit a leadoff home run, but also had a moment that helped the opposing team win.

Since the World Series began in 1903, there have only been 15 cases of back-to-back titles. Of those, only 4 teams managed three-peats or more: the Yankees (1936–39 and 1949–53), the Athletics (1972–74), and the Yankees again (1998–2000).

    Re: #95
This gets said about every sport, but why act like "data" is needed for something this obvious?
Of course the team that's already up 1-0 has a higher win rate from that point on — that's just math.

Background and key points of this discussion

The thread’s premise is the starting rotation as the Dodgers advance through the MLB playoffs. As one reply notes, only four franchises since 1903 have won three or more consecutive World Series titles (the Yankees in the 1930s-50s, the Athletics in the 1970s, and the Yankees again around 2000) — a reminder of just how hard the feat the Dodgers are chasing really is. Where the thread splits is over the question of “why is Yamamoto only the number-three starter,” with some questioning his ability and others pointing to a tactical reason: that his stats are better on the road than at home. A point readers can easily misread is that being “number three” in the rotation doesn’t mean a downgrade in ability — it actually reflects both high trust in Yamamoto and deliberate, careful use of him. Despite the inflammatory tone of the thread title, the overall assessment of Yamamoto within the posts themselves is highly positive.

CoroCoro Comic, a manga magazine for children, became a hot topic on 5ch after running a panel suggesting that people who “sneer” cynically at things end up a certain way later in life. In the thread, some commenters agreed with the rebuke of a cynical attitude that mocks earnest effort, while others countered that “the problem isn’t cynicism itself, but being irresponsible in situations where you should be a stakeholder.” The discussion spiraled from criticism of so-called “cynic types” into a full generational debate spanning the Baby Boomers, the Lost Generation, and Gen Z.

I think having a personality that gets a kick out of lording it over others is just bad.

    – Be kind to strangers you don't even know

I'm working on it myself every day too.

Background and Key Points of This Debate

The term “cynic type” (reisho-kei) spread on Japanese social media in the 2020s to describe an attitude of sneering at people who talk about effort or ideals. The CoroCoro Comic panel that sparked this discussion appears to have been drawn with the intent of cautioning against that same cynical attitude. What divided the thread was whether the simplistic framing of “cynicism = bad” was itself fair. While some commenters agreed with the message, others pushed back, arguing that “the problem isn’t cynicism itself, but being irresponsible in situations where you should be a stakeholder”—essentially questioning the loose use of the term. Separately, posts sorting generations from Baby Boomers through Gen Z and Gen Alpha into “hot-blooded,” “cynical,” and “lukewarm” categories are a familiar genre of online generational theorizing, and it’s worth noting they aren’t based on any rigorous survey or academic research.

On a 5ch thread on the “Nandemo Jikkyo G” board, users reacted with comments like “Must be nice being able to go outside in your pajamas” and “I thought wide pants had already gone out of style.” Over why sweats-style outfits have become the norm, opinions split between those who called it “just another swing of a pendulum the fashion industry has always had” or “people simply spending less money on clothes,” and younger posters who countered that “deliberately not dressing up IS the new dressing up” — exposing a generational divide in how the look gets read.

but fashion-clueless college kids hear "sweatpants are trendy" and just grab the elastic-ankle jogger-style ones sold as loungewear at Uniqlo, and then middle-aged men and women see that and start going on about "poverty" and whatnot

    Re: #102
Balancing it out with accessories is a given, but honestly I think this strays from dress-casual theory
since both the top and bottom are full-on casual loungewear

Background and Key Points of the Debate

The habit of wearing sweats and oversized T-shirts — essentially loungewear — as actual outdoor clothing is often described as an extension of the “comfort-wear mindset” that spread after the COVID-19 pandemic, and this thread can be read in that same light. Within it, an older-generation view that “they’re just following a trend with no real agency of their own” collided with the younger generation’s own stance that “deliberately not dressing up IS the stylish choice,” and the two sides talked past each other without ever really meeting. Worth noting: the photo in the original post likely doesn’t represent “college students in general” so much as a cherry-picked image of the kind that spreads easily on X. Some in the thread also pointed out that “there’s always been a segment dressed like this, going back to the delinquent/yankee subculture era,” suggesting this isn’t necessarily a brand-new phenomenon so much as a longstanding group of people who don’t spend money on clothes. A theory that the trend originated in Korea was also floated, but with no evidence offered, so it shouldn’t be taken as settled.

  • Natsuyaki Miyabi Still Has Unfinished Business With Singing — Thread Spirals Into Hello! Project Vocal-Skill Debate

Former Berryz Kobo and Buono! member Natsuyaki Miyabi posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song, and it set off a lively thread on 5ch’s Hello! Project board. Alongside comments praising Natsuyaki’s vocal ability itself, posters kept comparing her singing style to that of fellow Buono! member Dambara Ruru, as well as Tanaka Reina and Suzuki Airi. Supportive takes (“Miyabi could just be the guide vocalist at this point”) appeared right alongside harsher ones about her popularity (“she’s not the type who can make it outside the ‘village’”), and the thread widened into a debate about how singing ability and commercial success don’t always go hand in hand.

Background and Key Points of This Topic

Natsuyaki Miyabi is a former member of Berryz Kobo and Buono!, and this thread started after she posted a video of herself singing a Hello! Project song. The “guide vocal” (仮歌) mentioned in the replies refers to a temporary vocal take recorded before the official version, and the question of who handles guide vocals is the kind of topic only fans familiar with Hello! Project’s behind-the-scenes workings would raise. The thread also brings up how fellow Buono! member Nihei recently drew attention online over an unrelated matter, reflecting shifting name recognition within the group. Opinions in the thread are split — some say she “has the vocal skill but lacks individuality” or “wouldn’t sell outside the ‘village’” — reflecting a debate common in the entertainment and idol world: that vocal talent and commercial success don’t always go together.

  • Why the Wii Was a Huge Hit But Had a Short Lifespan: 5ch Says “Even With 100 Million Consoles Sold, Software Was Only Half of PS3’s”

The Wii launched in 2006 and ended production in 2013. While cumulative hardware sales topped 100 million units, a thread points out that the number of packaged software titles stayed at roughly half of the PS3’s total. On the 5ch Hardware/Industry (Geha) board, a thread debated why such a massive hit switched to its successor, the Wii U, after such a short run. Opinions were split between those who see it as a short-lived fad that third parties never fully bought into, and those who argue the Wii was never designed to be a long-running platform in the first place.

    1AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:02
・It was ultimately a one-hit wonder, riding on titles like Wii Sports
・Completely overhauling a game interface people had loved for years wasn't a good move
・During the shift to HD, the player base got split between it and PS3/Xbox
    2AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:04
The boom was just a fad for casual, mainstream audiences — only Nintendo's own games actually sold.
    Third parties had zero motivation.
Sony brought out Move, so the direction shifted.
Sony was only ever chasing Wii's leftovers anyway, so they weren't motivated either.
    That's basically it.
    3AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:10
It was a complete one-hit wonder, plain and simple.
If it actually had something great going for it, those elements would've carried over to later hardware.

    5AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:17
Wii: launched 2006, production ended 2013.

Dragon Quest X kept supporting it through the end of Version 3 even after hardware production ended (support was finally cut with Version 4 in November 2017).
That seems plenty long to me.
    52AnonymousOct 5, 2026 09:38
    Re: #5
It was completely dead in its later years though.
    6AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:18
It can only be because it was just a gimmick for kids.

Making the game react properly to how you swing the remote requires sophisticated physics calculations, but the Wii didn't have the power for that.
Swapping buttons for stick-waving just made things more tedious.

Given its limited power, the only physics simulations it could pull off were simple mini-games like bowling.
In other words, it was hardware that peaked at Wii Sports.
I thought it was just a showcase for what was coming, but there was no further development beyond that.

    9AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:26
Because they never intended for it to live long.

They pushed the Wii U out even though it was clearly unprepared.
They could've held off that year and kept milking the Wii a while longer instead.
I think the intent was to get ahead of the PS4, though.
    10AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:27
That said, the Wii was the one that started letting you download and play old retro games.
Even so, the Wii Remote's pointer accuracy was way too low, making it hard to control the way you wanted.
(They clearly knew that — that's why they later released the Wii Remote Plus with built-in MotionPlus.)
    12AnonymousOct 5, 2026 07:46
The Wii's hardware topped 100 million units, but it only put out about half as many packaged software titles as the PS3.

People say it had more million-sellers than the PS2,
but in reality sales were abnormally concentrated in about 30 specific titles and the usual handful of 4 or so publishers that always do well on Nintendo hardware —
everything else barely sold at all.

By its third year on the market, pretty much all the buzz was about the Virtual Console.

The Wii's whole philosophy was: there's already a main console sitting front and center elsewhere, and it's fine if the Wii just quietly gets a spot off in the corner.

Now that Switch/Switch 2 have become the main console,

Wii U, Switch, and Switch 2 all carry it forward, come on…

Background and Key Points of This Discussion

The Wii had a run of roughly seven years, from its 2006 launch to the end of production in 2013 — not extremely short compared to contemporaries like the PS3 and Xbox 360. What the thread calls “short-lived” isn’t about poor sales; it refers to the fact that, despite how widespread the hardware became, third-party software support stayed thin, and the transition to its successor, the Wii U, happened abruptly. Cumulative hardware sales topped 100 million units, making it one of the best-selling home consoles in Nintendo’s history, but according to the figures cited in the thread, the number of packaged software titles was only about half that of the PS3. The biggest point of contention is this twist of “it sold, but it didn’t last” — opinions were also split on whether the Wii’s control scheme and low-performance approach carried through to the Switch, or whether that lineage was cut off once by the Wii U’s struggles.

On October 3, a post spread across X with the line “Google Gemini is ending.” What’s actually ending isn’t Gemini itself — it’s free users’ (those not on a paid plan) access to the “Flash” model. From October 9 onward, only the lightweight “Flash-Lite” will be available to them. On the 5ch thread, discussion moved past the change itself and into a broader comparison debate — “Is Gemini actually any good next to ChatGPT (nicknamed “Chappy”) and Claude?” — with some posters pointing to frequent hallucinations, while others said it’s plenty good for image generation or quick searches.

    “Google Gemini is ending.”

On October 3, a post spread on X with exactly that line. What’s actually disappearing isn’t Gemini itself. What’s going away is free users’ (non-paying-plan) access to the “Flash” model.

Gemini was already dumb, and now it's getting even dumber

Not having it isn't really a big deal

Aw really? It was better than Chappy
Though the only thing I ever used it for was comparing paint colors when repainting my die-cast model car lol

It gave sloppier answers than Chappy plenty of times anyway, so I'm fine without it

If Gemini ends up useless, there's Chinese AI, so I'll just switch to that

I used it for work too, but Gemini lies without blinking so I quit using it
Push back on it and it just says 'oh sorry, that was outdated data'
It lies so much I went back to old-school methods — pulling manufacturer catalogs and checking myself
For recipes I didn't care since I'm the one eating it, so I kept asking it those

Honestly, asking here beats using AI
Last time I asked Gemini it just fed me a half-assed answer and it pissed me off
It recommended a ramen place, I went, and it was absolutely awful
Didn't even say sorry once, but here you'd get a good ramen recommendation instantly
Come on everyone, ditch that thing and get back here already

Even 3.5 only has data up through around April 2025.

Background and key points of this discussion

Gemini comes in three tiers — Pro, Flash, and Flash-Lite — and Flash was the relatively capable mid-tier model that had been available for free. What’s actually changing is the scope of the free plan, not the end of Gemini itself, a distinction that’s easy to get wrong. Where the thread split was over how accurate Gemini’s answers really are: many pointed to misinformation (hallucinations) stemming from stale training data, while others felt it’s good enough for image generation or quick lookups. The conversation also grew into a wider “which AI is best to use for free” debate, with several services — ChatGPT, Claude, Qwen, and others — getting name-checked, reflecting a surge of interest in alternatives sparked by this cut to Gemini’s free tier. This kind of narrowing of free access isn’t unique to Gemini — it’s one example of a broader industry trend toward prioritizing profitability over free offerings.
